Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, I've at the Julie Roe Stadium today because I've
- 0:03Speaker 1: come to watch the finish of a fantastic event which
- 0:06Speaker 1: we were telling you about last week on Radio Focus.
- 0:09Speaker 1: And I'm joined there by Jody Jackman, who's just finished
- 0:12Speaker 1: one hundred miles on the North downs Way. Now it's
- 0:15Speaker 1: a bit of a stupid question, Jody, but how are
- 0:17Speaker 1: you quite sore and quite tired?
- 0:20Speaker 2: We started running at ten past seven yesterday morning and
- 0:24Speaker 2: I finished about quarters to twelve this afternoon.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You've done the South downs Way? How does that compare
- 0:30Speaker 1: for today?
- 0:30Speaker 2: South downs Way I found was more runnable. There was
- 0:34Speaker 2: a lot more grassy areas that were nicer underfoot. North
- 0:37Speaker 2: down Way is lots and lots of rocks, incredibly steep
- 0:41Speaker 2: hills up and down, and it really really does take
- 0:45Speaker 2: it out of lakes in your body. Yeah.
- 0:48Speaker 1: I mean, so, let's say the first half was that comfortable,
- 0:52Speaker 1: you know, you was in your sort of comfort zone. Yeah.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I was okay up until about fifty miles, and then
- 0:58Speaker 2: I think this tiredness hit making so my nutrition went
- 1:03Speaker 2: to plan. I was eating while I was drinking. Well,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but I just I just think I got so tired.
- 1:09Speaker 2: It was so demanding.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Yes that yeah, so you pulled through it. I mean
- 1:15Speaker 1: what what was your thinking about? What helped you? Sort
- 1:17Speaker 1: of your body's losing power and energy? What goes through
- 1:21Speaker 1: your mind?
- 1:21Speaker 2: You just focus on checkpoints to checkpoint. You might plan
- 1:25Speaker 2: what food you're going to get when you get there.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And my husband Alex came out to cruise for some
- 1:29Speaker 2: of the earlier checkpoints before we had to leave because
- 1:33Speaker 2: he had work today, so I knew sort of after
- 1:36Speaker 2: maybe seven miles I would see him again. That was
- 1:39Speaker 2: always a nice distraction. I also have some friends who
- 1:43Speaker 2: were volunteering a checkpoints out on the course, So again
- 1:47Speaker 2: knowing that you're going to go into their checkpoint and
- 1:49Speaker 2: actually get.
- 1:50Speaker 1: To see you see people you know, brilliant.
- 1:53Speaker 2: I mean all the stuff there, all the volunteers on
- 1:57Speaker 2: the checkpoints, and the volunteers at the end. It made
- 2:00Speaker 2: it feel so welcome. Whether you know them or not,
- 2:03Speaker 2: they really do take good care of you.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So what do you feel like when you came off
- 2:07Speaker 1: the trail, when you came in through East will Manor
- 2:10Speaker 1: and you thought it's not far on hour sre, I felt.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Like the longest four miles in the world at that point.
- 2:17Speaker 2: It was just a case of power walking really, and
- 2:19Speaker 2: my feet, I've got untold blisters on them, yeah, and
- 2:23Speaker 2: they're very swollen and very sore. So yeah, just power
- 2:27Speaker 2: walk it in get to the finish line.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Did you have any mishaps on along the way?
- 2:31Speaker 2: I fell over twice before twenty five miles? Yeah, I
- 2:35Speaker 2: fell over twice in five minutes as well did And
- 2:38Speaker 2: one guy finishing today he sat and I said, how
- 2:41Speaker 2: are you still running? I actually heard you hit the
- 2:44Speaker 2: day really. Yeah, I've got some nice bruised elbows and
- 2:47Speaker 2: swollen knees from it.
- 2:48Speaker 1: No, I mean the finishes into this stadium. I mean
- 2:53Speaker 1: it's not as if it's jam packed, but there were
- 2:55Speaker 1: some ugly people here to see you. Did you know
- 2:56Speaker 1: your family were coming in?
- 2:58Speaker 2: I had asked if my name was able to come
- 3:00Speaker 2: because my land's never been to see me do any
- 3:02Speaker 2: of my big graces because I'm normally away out of town.
- 3:05Speaker 2: So that was really nice. And because of the time
- 3:08Speaker 2: of day that I finished, she was able to come
- 3:10Speaker 2: and make it, so that was lovely. I managed to
- 3:12Speaker 2: finish before my husband started work that he was here,
- 3:16Speaker 2: and I knew my kids were here, but I didn't
- 3:17Speaker 2: realize my cousin and my auntie.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Were coming here. Lovely, and there must be such a lift.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I know it's all over, but just to have smiling,
- 3:25Speaker 1: happy faces at the end of the race lovely. Yeah,
- 3:27Speaker 1: it really is. So what's next to the feet up?
- 3:30Speaker 1: I am going to have a risk now, But do
- 3:32Speaker 1: you kind of switch off from running there or you No.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I'll probably have a week or tuesa break, just do
- 3:39Speaker 2: some gentle walking, gentle stretching as part of my recovery,
- 3:43Speaker 2: and then just gradually get back to running for fun
- 3:46Speaker 2: and build him a distance up. Although I haven't actually
- 3:48Speaker 2: got anything.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Else, but no, I expect something to come along with
- 3:51Speaker 1: Jody knowing you, Oh I'm sure it will well, Jody,
- 3:55Speaker 1: who's been a lovely journey speaking to you and following
- 3:58Speaker 1: I've been tracking, tracking your runner. I was up early
- 4:00Speaker 1: at sort of six o'clock track in and see where
- 4:02Speaker 1: you were, and I'm so pleased that I got here,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and I just people can't get inside the mind of
- 4:09Speaker 1: an ultra one hundred miler. So you are an amazing person.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And thank you for having a.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Chat, thank you for your support, Thank you so much
- 4:17Speaker 2: for coming up today to the finish. It meant well
- 4:19Speaker 2: to me.
- 4:20Speaker 1: You're welcome to thank you,
