- 0:07Speaker 1: Good Thursday afternoon. So yah, welcome so the.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Program here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
- 0:14Speaker 2: My name is Craig Way. Thanks so much for joining us.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We're with you each and every weekday afternoon, Monday through
- 0:20Speaker 2: Friday from two pm to five pm, where we discuss
- 0:25Speaker 2: the world of perspiring arts and as it relates both
- 0:27Speaker 2: at the collegiate and professional level, on the high school
- 0:29Speaker 2: level as well, and we'll do some of that today
- 0:34Speaker 2: as well. I want to thank antone like him for
- 0:40Speaker 2: what he did as stepping in as producer for the
- 0:44Speaker 2: past week, and now he gets to go back to being,
- 0:46Speaker 2: as I called him, super promo kid and impresario of
- 0:50Speaker 2: all things promotional, which happens and relates to the musical
- 0:54Speaker 2: events that the iHeartRadio family is involved with concerts, and
- 1:00Speaker 2: that he's got the iHeartRadio Music at Festival coming up
- 1:02Speaker 2: in Las Vegas this fall. So he's a busy dude,
- 1:06Speaker 2: and and I'm I'm grateful to him for the time
- 1:08Speaker 2: he spent with us there stepping in. But back on
- 1:12Speaker 2: the bridge, back at the helm, back in controls of
- 1:18Speaker 2: the dials, the slide pots and all that makes this
- 1:21Speaker 2: program run smoothly. Is none other than Jay Carman back
- 1:25Speaker 2: from a week of vacation. Welcome back, thanks Greg. How
- 1:29Speaker 2: how was the vacation for folks? I mentioned at one
- 1:33Speaker 2: point during the last week that I said I was
- 1:37Speaker 2: mentioning Antonas and Antone like, I'm o producer in for
- 1:40Speaker 2: the vacationing Jay Carman, who's on vacation in the Washington
- 1:43Speaker 2: DC area, And I just left it that as I
- 1:46Speaker 2: moved on, and I had somebody, you know, texting why
- 1:50Speaker 2: is he going to Washington d C in the summertime?
- 1:53Speaker 2: So I realized I needed to clarify it, which I
- 1:56Speaker 2: did from then on out mentioning Jay Carmon back home
- 2:00Speaker 2: visiting family in the Washington d C era. Yes, it's vacation,
- 2:05Speaker 2: but it's family too, and so you had a good
- 2:07Speaker 2: time with your family. I take it I did.
- 2:09Speaker 3: Family, family and friends were the focus of the vacation.
- 2:12Speaker 3: This time. I got to meet some some significant others
- 2:16Speaker 3: from my home friends and I hadn't had the chance
- 2:18Speaker 3: to spend time with yet. Obviously got a lot of
- 2:21Speaker 3: quality family time in my parents, my sister, my dogs,
- 2:24Speaker 3: got to attend some some live tennis at the Washington
- 2:27Speaker 3: d C combined men's and Women's Pro tournament, So ended
- 2:31Speaker 3: up being two days of that because we were washed
- 2:32Speaker 3: out on Sunday, went back on Monday for the final.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Luckily I could attend the Monday final because I was
- 2:37Speaker 3: on vacation.
- 2:38Speaker 4: Uh.
- 2:39Speaker 3: And then on top of that, got to got to
- 2:43Speaker 3: spend some time, you know, going out downtown with some friends.
- 2:46Speaker 3: I didn't do a whole lot of you know, tourist
- 2:47Speaker 3: y DC things, especially given the heat with that in
- 2:50Speaker 3: the middle of the day, but a good combination of
- 2:54Speaker 3: going out and about and and just relaxing, hanging in,
- 2:56Speaker 3: having some home cooked food and recharging the battery.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And your mom, who is homecoming all the food for
- 3:04Speaker 2: you there is fortunate You're fortunate enough, and that she's
- 3:08Speaker 2: aware of your twenty seven food allergies or whatever it
- 3:10Speaker 2: is something like that, so she always navigates all of
- 3:14Speaker 2: that so that we don't have any incidents or accidents.
- 3:17Speaker 1: All right, Right, I'm just saying that's a good thing, right, Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Well, she's used to it, and she's you know, it
- 3:24Speaker 3: used to be that there were times in my upbringing
- 3:28Speaker 3: I had to be even more limited with my diet
- 3:31Speaker 3: than I am now. And luckily those times are behind us.
- 3:34Speaker 3: But gosh, I mean, I'm incredibly grateful for that. That's
- 3:37Speaker 3: a story for another show. The time I had to
- 3:39Speaker 3: eliminate all eight major food groups from my diet.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Wow.
- 3:43Speaker 5: Wow.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Luckily most of them are back in the fold.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Okay, i'll tell you what you compile your listen tomorrow
- 3:51Speaker 2: in the program, I want to hear all about this.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Okay, we'll do that.
- 3:56Speaker 2: In fact, we could almost do it in place of inconceivable,
- 4:00Speaker 2: you know, we could almost almost do that.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Sure my health history for my doctor's listening, because.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It's kind of fascinating really with some of the stuff,
- 4:08Speaker 2: the things you can eat, the things you can't, and
- 4:10Speaker 2: the stages and preparation.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Of some things that you can consume and others that
- 4:15Speaker 1: you cannot.
- 4:16Speaker 3: And but look, because of that, right, because of the limitations,
- 4:19Speaker 3: I've tried to pick up some of her best recipes
- 4:21Speaker 3: and taken forward here. So you know, one of the
- 4:24Speaker 3: one of the things she makes just a delicious arto
- 4:27Speaker 3: choke dipping sauce. Okay, it's extremely it's a random it
- 4:32Speaker 3: just you could dip everye anything, and you could dip
- 4:34Speaker 3: you know, any kind of cooked vegetable, sure, or a
- 4:36Speaker 3: piece of steak.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Or cracker or whatever. Yeah, it is like a good
- 4:39Speaker 1: spinach and art choke dip.
- 4:41Speaker 3: Yeah, well it's not an Arto choke dip that is
- 4:43Speaker 3: also a favorite. That's something I need to learn. How
- 4:46Speaker 3: this is a sauce. It's a sauce that is, it's
- 4:48Speaker 3: like a tangy sauce. So I was trying to pick
- 4:51Speaker 3: that up a little bit. But there are things like
- 4:53Speaker 3: her bowlin aise recipe, which I mean that it goes
- 4:56Speaker 3: right up. It's it's my mom's and it's Linda's head
- 4:59Speaker 3: to head to the best through the best home cooked
- 5:01Speaker 3: bowlin as rescues I've ever had.
- 5:04Speaker 2: You've been trying to make progress on your consumption of fish, right,
- 5:11Speaker 2: how's that going?
- 5:12Speaker 4: Well?
- 5:13Speaker 3: That that hit a bit of a wall on this
- 5:15Speaker 3: trip because it just, yeah, it just wasn't the main
- 5:18Speaker 3: focus with it. My my sister doesn't eat fish, so
- 5:23Speaker 3: that wouldn't have exactly been the best family meal setup.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Then okay, all right, I was trying to remember you
- 5:30Speaker 2: may be able to help me with this, But the
- 5:31Speaker 2: place I think may have been long gone.
- 5:33Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 5:35Speaker 2: In my day, he's of broadcasting Major League Soccer and
- 5:39Speaker 2: doing what is now called FC Dallas back then they
- 5:42Speaker 2: were called Dallas Byrne and they would played DC United
- 5:45Speaker 2: and he had played Old That's where I got to
- 5:47Speaker 2: work at old RFK Stadium and an outdoor broadcast area
- 5:51Speaker 2: near the top of the upper deck with the pigeon
- 5:55Speaker 2: poop all around and all that other kind of stuff.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but I did get to work at RFK
- 5:59Speaker 2: Stadium call games. I went to a restaurant that somebody
- 6:03Speaker 2: took me to, and I want to say it was
- 6:05Speaker 2: down in the Georgetown area, but but I also remember
- 6:08Speaker 2: being near water, and I don't know if it's near
- 6:11Speaker 2: the Potomac or whatever, but it was called something like
- 6:14Speaker 2: Joe and Tony's or Tony and Joe's. I don't remember,
- 6:17Speaker 2: and I'm sure the place doesn't exist anymore. But it
- 6:19Speaker 2: was really really good.
- 6:20Speaker 1: It was seafood and steaks and stuff like that.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And of course when I go up to that the
- 6:27Speaker 3: Tony Joe's in Georgetown, I guess it's Tony and Joe's
- 6:32Speaker 3: at the Washington Harbor. Maybe they've moved.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, good day.
- 6:35Speaker 3: I remember going growing up, biking down to that harbor
- 6:39Speaker 3: from the Capitol Crescent Trail in Bethesda, seven miles downhill
- 6:44Speaker 3: or to Georgetown, we get a little scoop of ice cream,
- 6:47Speaker 3: and then I have seven miles uphill.
- 6:49Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the unfortunate thing, is just having to go
- 6:51Speaker 2: back uphill on that. But and then of course in
- 6:54Speaker 2: subsequent trips it was important and coming upon me to
- 6:58Speaker 2: make a pilgrimage up to Baltimore and go a Fill's
- 7:00Speaker 2: on the Inner Harbor for crab Gake, So you know
- 7:02Speaker 2: that kind of thing. But anyway, we digress, which we
- 7:06Speaker 2: figured we would since it's Shakes first day back. But
- 7:08Speaker 2: here's what we have coming up on the program this afternoon.
- 7:13Speaker 2: We are going to continue to give away copies of
- 7:17Speaker 2: Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. We're doing three per day,
- 7:22Speaker 2: one per hour for three weeks. So here we are
- 7:25Speaker 2: on day four of week one and we have three
- 7:28Speaker 2: more copies we're going to give away. We have mixed
- 7:32Speaker 2: it as a combination of on some hours there'll be
- 7:36Speaker 2: a trivia question, other hours it'll just be the random
- 7:39Speaker 2: person to contact us via the talkback microphone.
- 7:43Speaker 1: More on all of that in a moment.
- 7:46Speaker 2: This first hour of the program is going to be
- 7:49Speaker 2: a trivia question, and the four o'clock hour is going
- 7:52Speaker 2: to be a trivia question. Three o'clock hour will be
- 7:55Speaker 2: a random thing. We flip flopped this every day, so
- 7:57Speaker 2: there's equal amounts of representation on that. You may be
- 8:01Speaker 2: a huge long worn football fan, but you might not
- 8:07Speaker 2: necessarily you might be a huge long worn football fan,
- 8:13Speaker 2: but you might not necessarily be steeped into the trivia
- 8:16Speaker 2: part of it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: I understand that.
- 8:18Speaker 2: That's why we also do the random thing where if
- 8:21Speaker 2: you're like the eighth person like we had yesterday to
- 8:24Speaker 2: contact us, and George Hawthorne I think was the eighth
- 8:27Speaker 2: person yesterday when we did in the four o'clock hour
- 8:30Speaker 2: to contact us on the talkback microphone, then you can
- 8:34Speaker 2: win that way when we do it on those hours
- 8:37Speaker 2: and today that'll be in the three o'clock hour at
- 8:39Speaker 2: trivia this hour, and we have a trivia coming up
- 8:43Speaker 2: in the four o'clock hour as well to give away
- 8:45Speaker 2: a copy of the magazine. And the way you do
- 8:48Speaker 2: it is for those of you who already know the drill,
- 8:51Speaker 2: just indulge me. For the folks who don't you download
- 8:55Speaker 2: the iHeartRadio app on your smartphone. Got to have a smartphone,
- 8:59Speaker 2: you know, it's important to do that. Our man Seatpala
- 9:01Speaker 2: said he didn't have an iPhone there, and we're like, man,
- 9:03Speaker 2: I feel your seat pal because he's a he is
- 9:06Speaker 2: a he's a regular in terms of texting us on
- 9:09Speaker 2: the text line, his questions, his thoughts, his comments. Yours
- 9:13Speaker 2: are welcome as well. On the text line. All you
- 9:15Speaker 2: have to do is text the word Texas follow by
- 9:18Speaker 2: your question or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 9:21Speaker 2: So you text the word Texas follow by your question
- 9:23Speaker 2: or comment to eight one five three zero.
- 9:25Speaker 1: Standard messaging and data rates may apply.
- 9:28Speaker 2: But for the purposes of our contest, and even if
- 9:31Speaker 2: you just want to leave us a voice message offering
- 9:34Speaker 2: up your opinion or asking a question, you can do
- 9:36Speaker 2: that on our talkback microphone. It's the talkback feature from
- 9:40Speaker 2: the iHeart Radio app. In the way that works is
- 9:43Speaker 2: you download the iHeart Radio app. Really easy to do
- 9:46Speaker 2: and it's free, whether on your smartphone, whether you're talking
- 9:49Speaker 2: about an iPhone or an Android. You download the app,
- 9:53Speaker 2: you know, from your app store or whatever. You download
- 9:55Speaker 2: the app. Once you get it downloaded, the next thing
- 9:57Speaker 2: you do is you do a search and we'll search
- 10:00Speaker 2: a search micro magnifying glass or window, whatever your search
- 10:04Speaker 2: bar you enter AM thirteen under the zone, it'll pop
- 10:07Speaker 2: straight up. And when it does, then you're gonna see
- 10:10Speaker 2: two buttons. One it's a little white one triangular shape.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That's to listen to what's going on the air. The
- 10:15Speaker 2: other one is a red button with a little white microphone.
- 10:19Speaker 1: That's the one you want for the talkback feature.
- 10:23Speaker 2: And so download the iHeartRadio app, you search AM thirteen
- 10:27Speaker 2: under the zone it pops up. Then push that red
- 10:31Speaker 2: button with white microphone because it activates the talkback microphone
- 10:34Speaker 2: and you leave a direct message for us with your voice.
- 10:38Speaker 2: That's why I say, for folks who want to do it,
- 10:40Speaker 2: you know, just to ask a question, we always welcome that.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Just try to keep it fair and keep it clean.
- 10:46Speaker 2: And it is a family program since we are airing it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: But for a contest, you absolutely have to do it.
- 10:53Speaker 2: So that's that's how you do that. You do it
- 10:56Speaker 2: with the contest. So that's coming up in a couple
- 10:58Speaker 2: of minutes. I'm gonna give you the trivia answer that
- 11:01Speaker 2: coming up here in a few minutes. We're gonna hear
- 11:03Speaker 2: from Long Ones head coach Steve Sarkeesian. Sark addressing the
- 11:09Speaker 2: media after the first practice yesterday. Now they're not quite
- 11:13Speaker 2: on the field yet this afternoon. They're gonna get on
- 11:16Speaker 2: the field probably a little in an hour from now,
- 11:20Speaker 2: and for second day of practice. Now they're not in
- 11:23Speaker 2: pads yet, they're in the shells and the helmets and shorts.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But he will will hear from Sark talking about the
- 11:31Speaker 2: first day of practice yesterday and the ongoing progress of
- 11:35Speaker 2: the team. Also this hour, we will have inconceivable, as
- 11:40Speaker 2: we do every day on the program.
- 11:42Speaker 1: That'll come up a little bit later this hour.
- 11:44Speaker 2: We are also in the three o'clock hour going to
- 11:48Speaker 2: hear some Dallas Cowboys conversation. You canna hear it from
- 11:51Speaker 2: the offensive and defensive coordinators from the Cowboys. You know,
- 11:57Speaker 2: Clayton Adams the offensive coordinator, Christian Parker the defensive coordinator.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You're gonna hear from them. Coming up in the second hour.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Also in the second hour, we continue our Southeastern Conference
- 12:06Speaker 2: football previews, our SEC football previews. We look at a
- 12:10Speaker 2: different school every day as a preview of what's to
- 12:15Speaker 2: come in the SEC. And to help us do that,
- 12:18Speaker 2: I've called upon all my fellow play by play brethren
- 12:22Speaker 2: around the Southeastern Conference and ask for their input. So
- 12:24Speaker 2: on Monday, Jeff Dantler, the play by play voice of
- 12:28Speaker 2: the Georgia Bulldogs, the defending conference champions, was with us. Tuesday,
- 12:32Speaker 2: Chuck Barrett, the play by play voice of the Arkansas Razorbacks,
- 12:35Speaker 2: was with us, and yesterday Sean Kelly, play by play
- 12:40Speaker 2: voice of the Florida Gators.
- 12:41Speaker 1: There's no.
- 12:43Speaker 2: Particular rhyme or reason to the days that we're presenting
- 12:47Speaker 2: each team because it's not like based on where we
- 12:50Speaker 2: think they're going to finish, or where they finished last
- 12:53Speaker 2: or any of that. It's not based on any of that.
- 12:54Speaker 2: The only thing that's based on is the availability of
- 12:57Speaker 2: my friends on a given day to be able to
- 12:59Speaker 2: join us. So we try to work a few days
- 13:01Speaker 2: out and schedule the fellow play by play voices of
- 13:06Speaker 2: the Southeastern Conference to join us on the program.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That's how it's worked the first three days.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Today we take a look at the Kentucky Wildcats and
- 13:13Speaker 2: we'll visit with Tom Leach, the voice of Big Blue.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Now it is by sheer coincidence, nothing more, because again
- 13:23Speaker 2: this is all about announcer availability. Sheer coincidence that this
- 13:29Speaker 2: is the third consecutive day where we will visit with
- 13:33Speaker 2: a play by play voice who is starting work with
- 13:35Speaker 2: a brand new head coach. That's how it was with
- 13:38Speaker 2: Arkansas with Ryan Silverfield the head coach there on Tuesday,
- 13:43Speaker 2: and then yesterday Sean Kelly, play by play voice of
- 13:46Speaker 2: the Florida Gators and his new head coach talking about
- 13:50Speaker 2: his new head coach, John Summral Today it's as I mentioned,
- 13:54Speaker 2: Tom Leach is the play by play voice of the
- 13:58Speaker 2: Kentucky Wildcats, and it's gonna be really interesting to.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Get his.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Perspective on will Stein, the new head coach of the
- 14:09Speaker 2: Kentucky Wildcats.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Why you ask, you may remember will Stein.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Will Stein was the offensive coordinator for Hank Carter at
- 14:18Speaker 2: Lake Travis here for a brief time, and so he'll
- 14:22Speaker 2: take over a program that went five and seven and
- 14:24Speaker 2: had their i think longest tenured head coach at Mark Stoops.
- 14:27Speaker 2: But we'll get Tom Leach's thoughts on that. That's coming
- 14:31Speaker 2: up in the three o'clock hour as well. All right,
- 14:34Speaker 2: here's your trivia question, and then we'll take a break
- 14:37Speaker 2: and come back and hear from Sarg.
- 14:39Speaker 1: But here's your trivia question.
- 14:41Speaker 2: And I've patterned this at least to this point about
- 14:46Speaker 2: opponents that the long range are facing We've talked about
- 14:48Speaker 2: Texas State. We mentioned that the first time that these
- 14:52Speaker 2: two teams played, I wanted to know the decade that
- 14:55Speaker 2: they played. It was the decade of the nineteen thirties.
- 14:57Speaker 2: In fact, it was the year nineteen thirty and the
- 14:58Speaker 2: guy who got it right knew the year. And I
- 15:02Speaker 2: didn't even ask for the year. I just asked for
- 15:04Speaker 2: the decade. So I've asked about that and asked about
- 15:08Speaker 2: Ohio State. As I mentioned, you know, in the Fiesta Bowl.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Texas will open play in the Southeastern Conference on Saturday,
- 15:18Speaker 2: September twenty sixth in Knoxville, Tennessee. They'll take on the
- 15:22Speaker 2: Tennessee Volunteers. Now, this will be the fourth meeting between
- 15:26Speaker 2: Texas and Tennessee.
- 15:28Speaker 1: They've met three other times.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Oddly enough or ironically, however you want to look at it.
- 15:33Speaker 2: On all three prior occasions Texas played Tennessee in a
- 15:39Speaker 2: bowl game.
- 15:40Speaker 1: They didn't play them at home.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They played them in a bowl game that on all
- 15:44Speaker 2: three occasions was in the Cotton Bowl that they played them.
- 15:48Speaker 2: The last time Texas played Tennessee was nineteen the nineteen
- 15:51Speaker 2: sixty nine January first, nineteen sixty nine Cotton Bowl game.
- 15:58Speaker 2: That was the first year of the sixty eight season,
- 16:01Speaker 2: when Darrel Royal had Emery Ballard install the wishbone offense,
- 16:06Speaker 2: and after the Longhorns had started off I think won
- 16:10Speaker 2: one in one, they kicked it in the high gear,
- 16:12Speaker 2: went on one in the Southwest Conference, and they beat
- 16:14Speaker 2: Tennessee thirty six to thirteen in the Cotton Bowl. Of course,
- 16:18Speaker 2: that Texas team in nineteen sixty eight was coached by
- 16:22Speaker 2: Darrel Royal, and it set the stage for the thirty
- 16:26Speaker 2: game winning streak, part of the thirty game winning streak
- 16:28Speaker 2: that carried through the undefeated nineteen sixty nine season.
- 16:31Speaker 1: The national title. The winnver Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl.
- 16:34Speaker 2: The next season nineteen seventy, going ten and zero the
- 16:37Speaker 2: regular season, being proclaimed the UPI National champions there before,
- 16:43Speaker 2: they were upset by Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl,
- 16:46Speaker 2: but they'd already won the UPI National title. Nebraska ended
- 16:49Speaker 2: up winning the AP title after Texas lost to Notre
- 16:52Speaker 2: Dame that day. Those teams were coached by Darl Royal.
- 16:54Speaker 2: In the other two wins over Tennessee, they were coached
- 16:59Speaker 2: by two different coaches. So all I need is one
- 17:04Speaker 2: tell me one of the two head coaches who coached
- 17:06Speaker 2: a Texas win over Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl. Be
- 17:09Speaker 2: the first one to correctly do it. You will win
- 17:12Speaker 2: a copy of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. All right,
- 17:15Speaker 2: up next, we'll hear from Sart talk some Long Warren
- 17:17Speaker 2: football here on thirteen under the Zone in the iHeartRadio app.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Ft aby with.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Us here on this Thursday afternoon. What pray chill? As
- 17:32Speaker 2: a producer Jay Herman heard through the Great Gun.
- 17:35Speaker 3: Well, you were setting up our last trivia question right
- 17:38Speaker 3: with the last meeting between Texas and Tennessee on the
- 17:40Speaker 3: Gridiron coming on January first, nineteen sixty nine. That's correct,
- 17:45Speaker 3: this would have been the number one song.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Wow.
- 17:48Speaker 2: I can't help but think of the movie The Big Chill.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Have you ever seen The Big Chill?
- 17:51Speaker 1: I have not. Oh, that's a period piece you need
- 17:55Speaker 1: to see.
- 17:55Speaker 3: Okay.
- 17:55Speaker 2: There's a lot of at the time current and then
- 17:58Speaker 2: later former or or later future bigger stars in the
- 18:03Speaker 2: Hollywood industry who are in that film. A pretty young
- 18:06Speaker 2: Jeff Goldbloom, Kevin klem is kind of right in this thing.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Glenn Close, who directed it, I've forgotten, but it's it's
- 18:15Speaker 2: it's a tremendous movie and little since we were talking
- 18:19Speaker 2: about trivia, a little known trivia fact.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It opens with people going to a funeral.
- 18:27Speaker 2: We're going to a funeral procession, and all you see
- 18:32Speaker 2: is like the tie being straightened on the body that's
- 18:38Speaker 2: in the in the casket and all this stuff. And
- 18:40Speaker 2: you see these these sleeves being pulled down over a
- 18:44Speaker 2: wrist where a wrist had been split, had been slipped,
- 18:49Speaker 2: so someone had bled out. And it turns out it's
- 18:52Speaker 2: a friend, a mutual friend of this entire group that
- 18:56Speaker 2: gathers to memorialize him. The you never see the face
- 19:02Speaker 2: of the person, but the trivia question is the body
- 19:05Speaker 2: that was used in there?
- 19:08Speaker 1: Kevin Costner's body?
- 19:09Speaker 3: Wow?
- 19:09Speaker 2: Yeah, you know he was a relative unknown at the time.
- 19:13Speaker 2: This was This was pre bull derm and pre dances
- 19:16Speaker 2: with wolves and all that other stuff. So it's in it.
- 19:20Speaker 2: But it's it's it's really a good, great ensemble cast
- 19:23Speaker 2: and just about you know, people gathering together years after
- 19:27Speaker 2: college and what are we doing with our lives and
- 19:29Speaker 2: where are we headed now?
- 19:30Speaker 1: You know, that kind of thing.
- 19:31Speaker 3: So very seventies, Hugh, even though it was nineteen sixty nine.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, and and and well it was the
- 19:40Speaker 2: music is just playing as the as the movie's opening,
- 19:43Speaker 2: but that's not the music that was played at the
- 19:45Speaker 2: memorial service.
- 19:46Speaker 7: Uh.
- 19:47Speaker 2: One of the friends goes over to play the Oregon
- 19:50Speaker 2: at this very solemn occasion, and he talked about how
- 19:53Speaker 2: Alex is one of his favorite songs, and it was
- 19:57Speaker 2: you can't always get what you want. And she's playing
- 19:59Speaker 2: in in the organ, you know, the Rolling Stones classic.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So in any event, that's that's that's from that. But
- 20:07Speaker 2: I always think about that when I hear heard it
- 20:10Speaker 2: through the great part. Do we have a winner yet?
- 20:14Speaker 3: Not yet?
- 20:14Speaker 2: Okay, see it's not that difficult. But if you're a
- 20:18Speaker 2: long one fan, you probably wouldn't know it. So again,
- 20:23Speaker 2: we just want to know either one. It doesn't have
- 20:25Speaker 2: to be both.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Well, we get somebody on the text line, but we
- 20:28Speaker 3: do we need to talk back now.
- 20:29Speaker 2: It's got to be talk about yea, we need wait,
- 20:31Speaker 2: that's what we were instructed and required to do. You've
- 20:34Speaker 2: got to do it through the talk back line. So
- 20:38Speaker 2: all you have to do is, you know, download that
- 20:41Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app and then and then search AUM thirteen under
- 20:44Speaker 2: the zone, push that red button with a white microphone
- 20:47Speaker 2: and then just tell us either name of either the
- 20:49Speaker 2: head coach who coached a Texas win over Tennessee in
- 20:53Speaker 2: either of those prior Cotton Bowl victories. There there was one. Well,
- 21:00Speaker 2: I will say this, let me amend this. One coach
- 21:04Speaker 2: to victory, one coach to defeat. But I wanted to
- 21:07Speaker 2: know the name of either coach who coached Texas against
- 21:10Speaker 2: Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl. One coach to victory, one
- 21:15Speaker 2: coached a defeat. So it's two different names, and I'll
- 21:18Speaker 2: accept either name off that. Meanwhile, let's hear from the
- 21:20Speaker 2: current head coach, Steve Sarkisian, what do you have to
- 21:23Speaker 2: say after the team's practice yesterday.
- 21:25Speaker 8: You know, as always, it's.
- 21:27Speaker 9: Great to be back on the grass with the team,
- 21:29Speaker 9: you know, and as much as things have changed in
- 21:33Speaker 9: some of the rules and being out with the guys
- 21:35Speaker 9: in the summer, there's nothing like putting helmets on and
- 21:38Speaker 9: being on the grass and practicing. And so I think
- 21:41Speaker 9: for us as a team, one thing we talked to
- 21:42Speaker 9: the team about is getting back to the intent in
- 21:45Speaker 9: which we need to practice and transition out of what
- 21:49Speaker 9: we were into the summer to who we need to
- 21:51Speaker 9: be in camp, and so it's our first day. I
- 21:54Speaker 9: didn't expect us to be perfect. We got a long
- 21:56Speaker 9: way to go. There were some bright spots, there were
- 21:59Speaker 9: some rough spots. But in the end, it's like I said,
- 22:02Speaker 9: it's the first day. Was great being back out. There's
- 22:04Speaker 9: great sweating with everybody and going through it.
- 22:06Speaker 8: So that's that, all right.
- 22:08Speaker 2: So naturally, if Sarty is going to mention that there
- 22:14Speaker 2: were some rough spots to go with the right spots,
- 22:17Speaker 2: folks who.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Are going to know tell us a little more about
- 22:20Speaker 1: those rough spots.
- 22:21Speaker 8: I'm more concerned.
- 22:24Speaker 9: If they're the continually same rough spots throughout practice and
- 22:28Speaker 9: or we don't fix them and they show up again.
- 22:31Speaker 8: Tomorrow and the next day and the next day.
- 22:32Speaker 9: Right, that's our job as coaches, and that's where our
- 22:35Speaker 9: players need to be coachable so that we don't make
- 22:38Speaker 9: the same mistakes time and time again in any phase offense,
- 22:41Speaker 9: defense or special teams.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Okay, all right, Yeah, that's that's certainly a way to
- 22:46Speaker 1: look at it. And you know, and again, this is
- 22:49Speaker 1: just the first day.
- 22:51Speaker 2: Obviously in practice, they're not even in pads yet. But
- 22:55Speaker 2: it's gonna spark some curiosity, some questions. For example, those
- 23:00Speaker 2: new faces in specific right here, the transfer guys who
- 23:05Speaker 2: came through the portal. You know, guys, you know, like
- 23:10Speaker 2: a Rachie Bio, Rachine Bios coming in, or let's just
- 23:14Speaker 2: say a Hollywood Smothers or a Release Brown, somebody like that,
- 23:18Speaker 2: Bo Masco. The transfers who came into the program. How
- 23:22Speaker 2: about their first day of fall camp.
- 23:24Speaker 9: Well, I think, you know, I think they were good.
- 23:27Speaker 9: You know, I thought we were in good shape. This
- 23:29Speaker 9: is probably one of our least cramp days of first
- 23:33Speaker 9: day of practice. I think we had five I can
- 23:35Speaker 9: tell you our first year here, I think we had
- 23:37Speaker 9: thirty eight, So that number has gone down every year.
- 23:41Speaker 9: And so I just think the intensity of practice, the
- 23:43Speaker 9: way they worked, you know, I think them understanding of
- 23:48Speaker 9: kind of how our practices go. That that helped them
- 23:51Speaker 9: being in springball and now being back for training camp.
- 23:54Speaker 9: So all in all, you know, I get again, I
- 23:56Speaker 9: think we've been really fortunate to have some really good
- 23:59Speaker 9: additions and then see how much they can grow into
- 24:02Speaker 9: being a real part of the team and how they
- 24:03Speaker 9: can contribute.
- 24:04Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting brought up that whole thing about
- 24:08Speaker 2: the cramping and how much cramping, they had his first
- 24:10Speaker 2: year and all that kind of stuff. Veteran players who
- 24:15Speaker 2: have been through it and understand it are more likely
- 24:19Speaker 2: to be able to lead some of the younger guys
- 24:20Speaker 2: to go through those first few dog days of summer.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And Sark was about asked about the importance of having
- 24:28Speaker 2: guys like that to help lead some of the others
- 24:30Speaker 2: through these dog days of practice.
- 24:32Speaker 9: Well, I think I think it's it's hugely important. You know,
- 24:35Speaker 9: we talked to even about, you know, media day, the
- 24:39Speaker 9: fact that I had Arch, I had Trevor, I had
- 24:42Speaker 9: calling guys who have been in the program, and then
- 24:43Speaker 9: you think about a lot of these other guys that
- 24:45Speaker 9: Jelani McDonald who's been in the program. You know, those
- 24:49Speaker 9: those types of guys I think serve as a good
- 24:53Speaker 9: model for Hey, this is how you approach it. And
- 24:55Speaker 9: it's not just when we're on the field, it's how
- 24:57Speaker 9: do you approach your recovery right now? And you when
- 24:59Speaker 9: you get in a lot, when you're in the training room,
- 25:01Speaker 9: you know what you what are you fueling your body
- 25:03Speaker 9: with for dinner tonight so you can get a good
- 25:06Speaker 9: night's sleep and be ready to go again tomorrow and
- 25:08Speaker 9: the next day and the next day.
- 25:09Speaker 8: So I think it's all that.
- 25:10Speaker 9: It goes from your preparation from a football perspective, it
- 25:14Speaker 9: goes to how we practice, and then it goes to
- 25:16Speaker 9: from a recovery standpoint.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Okay, Next ask for updates Kobe Black the corner, and
- 25:22Speaker 2: then Cole Hudson still trying to earn that extra year
- 25:25Speaker 2: of eligibility through the legal channels.
- 25:28Speaker 5: Yeah, Kobe.
- 25:29Speaker 9: Kobe's been a nice addition for us there because he
- 25:32Speaker 9: gives us position flexibility, right, his versatility to you know,
- 25:36Speaker 9: obviously play man coverage being a corner. I think he's
- 25:39Speaker 9: a very smart player. He's savvy, he's got good instincts,
- 25:41Speaker 9: and so you know, so far, so good, right with
- 25:44Speaker 9: that move there, I don't really have much of an
- 25:46Speaker 9: update yet. I think we'll find out more about Cole here,
- 25:49Speaker 9: probably within the next week or so. I think there's
- 25:54Speaker 9: some positive signs to that thing coming to fruition, but
- 25:57Speaker 9: we'll see what happens.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Okay, all right, Next asked about the possibilities of other
- 26:01Speaker 2: players who might join the team.
- 26:02Speaker 8: I don't worry about it.
- 26:04Speaker 9: I just can't you know, I've got one hundred and
- 26:06Speaker 9: eleven other guys that I'm trying to get ready to
- 26:08Speaker 9: go play a game here in less than a month.
- 26:13Speaker 9: When those things present themselves, I mean, I think that's
- 26:16Speaker 9: where our you know, Brandon Harris and his team, and
- 26:19Speaker 9: they're doing all that backwork for me, and then when
- 26:22Speaker 9: things come to light, then you make decisions on it.
- 26:24Speaker 8: But you've got to trust the people.
- 26:25Speaker 9: And We've got great people on an organization, and so
- 26:28Speaker 9: I've got to trust them to do their job so
- 26:30Speaker 9: I can focus on our team right now.
- 26:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Brandon Harris one of those guys I mentioned the
- 26:33Speaker 2: other day. He's listed in Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine
- 26:37Speaker 2: as one of the forty under forty. There's a bright
- 26:40Speaker 2: young minds in college football, and he's the general manager
- 26:42Speaker 2: of the Texas program. Now, I know it was only
- 26:47Speaker 2: one practice and they're not in pads yet, but Sark
- 26:50Speaker 2: was asked, or were there's some players that had some
- 26:52Speaker 2: really good practice?
- 26:54Speaker 6: Oh?
- 26:55Speaker 9: You guys always hit me with that one in mine.
- 26:57Speaker 9: You know, I thought Arch had a good day. I've
- 27:00Speaker 9: seen a lot of rough quarterback days. First day of practice.
- 27:02Speaker 9: The defenses have seen all these same plays all, you know.
- 27:06Speaker 9: I feel like all summer long, I thought he looked good.
- 27:09Speaker 9: I thought a couple of runners Hollywood had some nice runs.
- 27:12Speaker 9: I thought Michael Terry showed up running the ball. I
- 27:15Speaker 9: thought defensively, you know, Rashem Biles was flying around, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 9: so a lot of positive, positive stuff. It was good
- 27:22Speaker 9: to have see Jermaine back on offense too. I thought
- 27:24Speaker 9: he did a couple of nice things for us there.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Okay, all right, next, ask about players trying to be
- 27:33Speaker 2: more disciplined. You know, penalties were an issue last year,
- 27:36Speaker 2: no question about it. So he was asked about the
- 27:38Speaker 2: team's intent and the coaching staff's intent and the program's
- 27:41Speaker 2: intent to cut back on all the penalties.
- 27:44Speaker 8: He's real fresh, He's real.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Sorry, I did play quite the right. I guess I'm
- 27:49Speaker 3: a little rusty after all. Right here it is.
- 27:51Speaker 9: Well, I mean, we make it as intense as possible
- 27:54Speaker 9: between you know, coach Muschamp, coach Flood. I mean, everybody
- 27:57Speaker 9: screaming and doing their stuff. I think, like I touched
- 28:01Speaker 9: on it media day. I think it's group punishment too,
- 28:05Speaker 9: and I hate saying it like that, but.
- 28:06Speaker 8: That's the reality of the situation.
- 28:08Speaker 9: Everybody's got to feel the effect of a penalty because
- 28:11Speaker 9: that's what happens in a game. One guy doesn't get
- 28:13Speaker 9: flagged and he's the only foul.
- 28:15Speaker 8: It's all of us.
- 28:16Speaker 9: Well, we all feel that, and so I think that
- 28:19Speaker 9: in innately has helped. And I think across the ball,
- 28:22Speaker 9: a little bit of the banter has helped. You know
- 28:24Speaker 9: that they're they're digging into each other because both sides
- 28:27Speaker 9: of the ball know how important it is for us
- 28:29Speaker 9: to reduce our penalties. And so the little bit of
- 28:32Speaker 9: that banter, I thought showed up today. I thought I
- 28:34Speaker 9: was healthy.
- 28:34Speaker 1: It was good too, all right.
- 28:36Speaker 2: And one more from start this hour. A program of
- 28:40Speaker 2: this magnitude that has this much national visibility, just like
- 28:46Speaker 2: Alabama Wood or Georgia Wood, or Ohio State Wood or
- 28:49Speaker 2: usc Wood or Oklahoma Wood or Michigan Wood. You get
- 28:52Speaker 2: the idea in Texas being one of those programs, it's
- 28:56Speaker 2: gonna be an awful lot of outside noise. Always is
- 29:00Speaker 2: that's talked about here. The players talk about trying to
- 29:02Speaker 2: block it out and go forward.
- 29:03Speaker 1: And Sark once again asked about it first day of practice,
- 29:07Speaker 1: about the outside noise and do his players feel as
- 29:11Speaker 1: though they have to prove things either right by those
- 29:15Speaker 1: who are hyping them or wrong. By those who are
- 29:17Speaker 1: downplaying them.
- 29:18Speaker 9: Well, I think that was really my message to the
- 29:20Speaker 9: team last night, you know, and was the outside noise
- 29:24Speaker 9: is just that focus on what we need to do.
- 29:27Speaker 9: Prove us right, rather than trying to prove other people
- 29:29Speaker 9: wrong or right outside of the building, prove us right
- 29:32Speaker 9: inside of our building. And I think the older of
- 29:35Speaker 9: the Vets get it. And now it's trying to teach
- 29:38Speaker 9: some of the younger guys to not read your articles,
- 29:41Speaker 9: you know, and focus on what their position coach is
- 29:45Speaker 9: saying in their meeting room and how they can get better.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Okay, all right there it is from Sark.
- 29:49Speaker 2: Before we get to the break, jac Han mentioned somebody
- 29:52Speaker 2: try to answer trivia question on the text line, and
- 29:55Speaker 2: I said, we can only take the answers through the
- 29:59Speaker 2: iHeartRadio app the talkback feature. The guess that someone put
- 30:04Speaker 2: on the text line was incorrect. But I want to
- 30:07Speaker 2: make sure that people understand what I'm saying here. I said,
- 30:10Speaker 2: when Texas defeated Tennessee in that nineteen sixty nine Cotton Bowl,
- 30:15Speaker 2: Darren Royal was the head coach. What I wanted to
- 30:18Speaker 2: know was who the Texas coach was the other two
- 30:21Speaker 2: times that Texas played Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl. Not
- 30:26Speaker 2: who the Tennessee coach was. Somebody guess Doug Dickey, and
- 30:29Speaker 2: that would be a correct answer if I said who
- 30:31Speaker 2: was the Tennessee coach? That wasn't the question. The question
- 30:34Speaker 2: was who was the Texas head coach? The other two
- 30:36Speaker 2: times that Texas played Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl.
- 30:41Speaker 1: One was a win, one was a loss.
- 30:43Speaker 2: All you have to do is give me either one
- 30:45Speaker 2: either the coach, the one who coached the long runs
- 30:47Speaker 2: the victory, the one who was the coach when they
- 30:49Speaker 2: lost to Tennessee. And you do that on the talkback
- 30:53Speaker 2: line on the iHeartRadio app there and search AM thirteen
- 30:58Speaker 2: under the Zone and pressed that right that red butt
- 31:00Speaker 2: with a white microphone, and then you just tell us
- 31:02Speaker 2: who the correct answer was.
- 31:05Speaker 1: All right?
- 31:05Speaker 2: Coming up inconceivable here on thirteen under the Zone. Second
- 31:17Speaker 2: hour on the program, here on thirteen Under the Zone,
- 31:21Speaker 2: Craig Way joined by the producer Jay Carman.
- 31:24Speaker 1: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll continue.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Our SEC football previews, and so we'll have our SEC
- 31:33Speaker 2: football previews continued by a look at the Kentucky Wildcats,
- 31:36Speaker 2: and we'll visit with Tom Leech's played by playvoice of
- 31:40Speaker 2: Kentucky coming up here in a few minutes. We have
- 31:42Speaker 2: a winner. Are we able to play his winning injury?
- 31:45Speaker 2: We did some of this last week.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we sure can.
- 31:47Speaker 2: On on the talk back feature on the iHeart Radio app,
- 31:53Speaker 2: we again we asked the question, Texas is playing Tennessee
- 31:57Speaker 2: three times? It's it just three times? In all three
- 31:59Speaker 2: times that happened in the Cotton Bowl. The most recent
- 32:02Speaker 2: time was January first, nineteen sixty nine. Texas won thirty
- 32:05Speaker 2: six thirteen. They were coached by Daryl Royle. I wanted
- 32:08Speaker 2: to know either of the two head coaches that coached
- 32:12Speaker 2: Texas in either of those prior to Cotton Bowl games
- 32:16Speaker 2: against Tennessee. One was win, one was a loss, and
- 32:19Speaker 2: the first guy out of the box got it.
- 32:23Speaker 4: Well.
- 32:24Speaker 10: Blair Cherry lost to the Tennessee. And that was way
- 32:28Speaker 10: long time ago. But it wasn't nineteen sixty nine. Texas
- 32:32Speaker 10: beat I in sixty nine, and our old friend Derrel
- 32:35Speaker 10: Wurro was the head coach there.
- 32:38Speaker 1: That's exactly right, and that's Thomas Kleinda.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Thomas Kalenda, our winner.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Thomas was correct. How far back he said? It was
- 32:45Speaker 2: way on back yeah, it was. It was nineteen fifty
- 32:49Speaker 2: the season Blair Cherry was the coach. The Loghorns lost
- 32:53Speaker 2: one regular season game, that was to Oklahoma, who was
- 32:57Speaker 2: number three in the country. They lost by one point
- 32:59Speaker 2: fourteen team, but they won the Southwest Conference. Played fifth
- 33:02Speaker 2: ranked Tennessee in the Cotton Bowl January first, nineteen fifty one.
- 33:07Speaker 2: They lost to Tennessee twenty to fourteen. The other answer
- 33:10Speaker 2: we would have accepted was the nineteen fifty three season
- 33:15Speaker 2: for Texas when the log Worns went seven and three
- 33:22Speaker 2: during the year, and this was like a real Cinderella thing.
- 33:26Speaker 2: And Texas in nineteen fifty three went seven and three.
- 33:31Speaker 2: They lost their opener at LSU, they lost to fifth
- 33:35Speaker 2: ranked Oklahoma, and they lost to Rice, but they only
- 33:41Speaker 2: lost the one Southwest Conference game, so they won the
- 33:43Speaker 2: Southwest Conference title and they go into the Cotton Bowl
- 33:50Speaker 2: against Tennessee. They and they beat Tennessee. Actually was the
- 33:55Speaker 2: nineteen fifty two season when nine to two, they lost
- 33:57Speaker 2: to Notre Dame and they lost to Okla Homa, but
- 34:01Speaker 2: they didn't drop a Southwest Conference game. They went into
- 34:04Speaker 2: the matchup with Tennessee, who was number eight in the country.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Texas was number ten and the Logorns shut out the
- 34:10Speaker 2: volunteer sixteen to nothing, so they had one with a
- 34:12Speaker 2: win and one with a loss. And Blair Cherry was
- 34:15Speaker 2: the coach in nineteen fifty when they won the Southwest Conference,
- 34:18Speaker 2: lost to Tennessee and the Cotton Bowl twenty to fourteen.
- 34:21Speaker 2: At Price was the other name he would have accepted
- 34:24Speaker 2: because he coached the nineteen fifty two team that beat
- 34:27Speaker 2: Tennessee and shut them out in the Cotton Bowl sixteen
- 34:30Speaker 2: to nothing. In fact, at Price took over after the
- 34:34Speaker 2: nineteen fifty season. When Texas defeated Tennessee to win the
- 34:37Speaker 2: Cotton Bowl, Blair Cherry announced he was going to leave
- 34:41Speaker 2: because of the critical nature of the Texas fan base.
- 34:44Speaker 3: Oh wow, that was nineteen fifty. But surely they've never
- 34:47Speaker 3: been critical of anyone.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Here's here's my favorite quote from a Texas coach. And
- 34:54Speaker 2: Blair Cherry, by the way, was a tremendous high school
- 34:57Speaker 2: football coach, won three consecutive state championships at Amerrill in
- 35:00Speaker 2: the thirties and then went on and coached at Texas.
- 35:03Speaker 2: But he left because of the criticism that was heaped
- 35:06Speaker 2: upon him. But my favorite quote from a Texas coach
- 35:12Speaker 2: about that sort of thing. Was one coach who said
- 35:15Speaker 2: he was resigning as head coach from the University of
- 35:18Speaker 2: Texas football program due to the highly he called it
- 35:22Speaker 2: suspicious and critical nature of the Texas fans. That coach
- 35:28Speaker 2: was Dave Allerdice in nineteen fifteen. Imagine nineteen fifteen. Due
- 35:37Speaker 2: to the suspicious and critical nature of the Texas fans.
- 35:41Speaker 3: I can't take one more telegram telling me I'm doing
- 35:44Speaker 3: a bad job.
- 35:44Speaker 1: She was a little over one hundred years ago.
- 35:47Speaker 3: So anyway, it was radio even widespread. No, so where
- 35:52Speaker 3: is this is just newspapers?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, and probably people writing letters and the
- 35:56Speaker 2: ingrey and all that other kind of stuff.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Yeah, unbelievable.
- 35:59Speaker 2: The first radio broadcast of a sporting event was in
- 36:01Speaker 2: nineteen twenty one Harold Arlind doing a Pirate's Phillies game
- 36:06Speaker 2: from the stands on a telephone instrument. That was the
- 36:09Speaker 2: first ever baseball game ever broadcast off of that. So yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 2: Matt Brant always liked that. He got a good chuck
- 36:15Speaker 2: out of that as well. The highly suspicious and critical
- 36:18Speaker 2: nature of the Texas fan base.
- 36:20Speaker 3: It's in our DNA.
- 36:21Speaker 1: Yeah, so there you go.
- 36:24Speaker 2: All right, We're gonna visit coming up here in just
- 36:28Speaker 2: a few minutes with the play by play voice of
- 36:30Speaker 2: the Kentucky Wildcats. That's Tom Leech, whose programs undergone a
- 36:36Speaker 2: coaching change. But it's gonna be a little fascinating the
- 36:39Speaker 2: folks down here because Will Stein is the new head coach. Now,
- 36:43Speaker 2: Stein an accomplished offensive mind, most recently at Oregon, but
- 36:49Speaker 2: there are folks around here remember not too long ago
- 36:51Speaker 2: when he was the offensive coordinator Frank Carter at Lake Travis.
- 36:56Speaker 2: So it's gonna be interesting to hear Tom's thoughts on
- 36:59Speaker 2: that as well. We're going to give away another copy
- 37:02Speaker 2: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. We'll do that, and
- 37:06Speaker 2: that's going to be of the lottery version variety this hour,
- 37:10Speaker 2: and then in the four o'clock hour we'll give away
- 37:13Speaker 2: one more copy and that'll be another trivia question. So
- 37:16Speaker 2: we'll do that, But up next we'll visit with Tom Leach,
- 37:20Speaker 2: the play by play voice of the Kentucky Wildcats, when
- 37:22Speaker 2: we continue on this Thursday afternoon on Sports Radio AM
- 37:24Speaker 2: thirteen under the Zone at the IR Radio app on
- 37:27Speaker 2: the program here on thirteen under the Zone. So I
- 37:32Speaker 2: just went through all of this this deal of of
- 37:37Speaker 2: laying out some incredibly complimentary comments for our next guest here,
- 37:43Speaker 2: but I'm more than happy to repeat those I said,
- 37:45Speaker 2: if you are. We were talking about the wildly popular
- 37:49Speaker 2: Kentucky native Chris Stapleton, and I said, and if you
- 37:52Speaker 2: go into the Bluegrass, you will Encalorie. No end of
- 37:56Speaker 2: wildly popular commentary about our next guest. Tom Leaks, play
- 38:02Speaker 2: by play voice of the Kentucky Wildcats is with us.
- 38:05Speaker 2: I appreciate the time and glad you were able to
- 38:08Speaker 2: stick with us there through the staff foos.
- 38:10Speaker 1: How are you, my friend?
- 38:12Speaker 4: I am doing well. I know what happened. Yeah, we
- 38:15Speaker 4: both know what happened.
- 38:16Speaker 7: My friend Mark Stoops is trying to scuttle disappearance on
- 38:20Speaker 7: the Craig Show.
- 38:23Speaker 1: Well, i'll tell you what. You know what the first
- 38:26Speaker 1: thing I was going to do.
- 38:27Speaker 2: I was going to hop into the fact that you
- 38:31Speaker 2: know that that long tenure certainly that Stoops had there
- 38:36Speaker 2: at Kentucky and had a lot of success, and that
- 38:40Speaker 2: was a great game in lection last year that went
- 38:42Speaker 2: overtime and all this kind of stuff, and we get
- 38:45Speaker 2: in our business, and then we'll jump to talk about
- 38:48Speaker 2: a guy I knew when he was the offensive coordinator
- 38:50Speaker 2: over here Lake Travis a few years ago.
- 38:52Speaker 1: Your new head coach, Will Stein.
- 38:54Speaker 2: But you bring up an interesting point that we do
- 38:58Speaker 2: establish these relationships with our coaches and work very closely
- 39:03Speaker 2: with them, and then if one leaves for another opportunity,
- 39:07Speaker 2: or one's contract is not renewed, or for whatever reason,
- 39:10Speaker 2: if the coach doesn't return, there is a little bit
- 39:13Speaker 2: of a sense of loss and then there's some readjustment.
- 39:15Speaker 2: Isn't there a time when it comes to a new
- 39:17Speaker 2: head coach coming in.
- 39:19Speaker 7: Yes, and you can appreciate this, I've caught a break
- 39:23Speaker 7: with coach Stein. Normally have just kind of a get
- 39:25Speaker 7: to know you period with a new coach and you know,
- 39:29Speaker 7: learning you.
- 39:30Speaker 6: Know who they can trust, who they can all that
- 39:31Speaker 6: kind of stuff.
- 39:32Speaker 7: But Will his dad played at Kentucky in the eighties,
- 39:37Speaker 7: so he grew up coming to games with his mom
- 39:39Speaker 7: and dad and listening to the.
- 39:42Speaker 6: UK network, So we already had a little head.
- 39:45Speaker 4: Start on a relationship with him. Thankfully.
- 39:47Speaker 2: That always helps, That always makes it makes a big
- 39:50Speaker 2: difference on that all right. So the first question was
- 39:53Speaker 2: going to ask you is a similar question the way
- 39:54Speaker 2: this has worked Tom with when I've been doing these
- 39:58Speaker 2: sec previews I mentioned I made a point I wanted
- 40:01Speaker 2: people to know that it's been by, you know, just
- 40:06Speaker 2: by the scheduling when it worked out for the different
- 40:09Speaker 2: guys to be on with us. And it is a
- 40:11Speaker 2: sheer coincidence that after a Monday's conversation with Jeff Dansler,
- 40:18Speaker 2: who of course is going to take over the football
- 40:20Speaker 2: play by play duties for Georgia this fall, but Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 40:24Speaker 2: and today all of our conversations are with veteran play
- 40:28Speaker 2: by play voices who will be working with a new
- 40:31Speaker 2: head coach. It was Chuck Barrett with Arkansas on Tuesday,
- 40:34Speaker 2: it was Sean Kelly with Florida yesterday, and now here's
- 40:38Speaker 2: you with will Stein. So I'll start it by asking you,
- 40:41Speaker 2: although there's a little more familiar ground than with regard
- 40:45Speaker 2: to will Stein for you and even a little bit
- 40:47Speaker 2: for me as opposed to say John some Roll at
- 40:50Speaker 2: Florida or at Arkansas with Ryan Silverfield as well, but
- 40:56Speaker 2: what have you been able to notice just in the
- 40:59Speaker 2: dimeintor demeanor, whether it was through the spring practices and
- 41:03Speaker 2: then and then now as fall camps are getting underway,
- 41:06Speaker 2: any noticeable differences in what you're seeing in how will
- 41:11Speaker 2: Stein is preparing to run his football program.
- 41:17Speaker 7: You know, he's more The main thing you I think
- 41:19Speaker 7: probably think about is he is more of an off much.
- 41:24Speaker 6: Much more of an offensive background.
- 41:26Speaker 7: He was a quarterback as a player and has been
- 41:29Speaker 7: an offensive guy and a coordinator. Sees come up through
- 41:32Speaker 7: the ranks where Mark was on the defensive side and
- 41:37Speaker 7: came to it from from you know, just an offensive
- 41:39Speaker 7: guy and a defensive guy. Uh, are a little different.
- 41:42Speaker 7: I have not seen a lot of very much practices yet.
- 41:47Speaker 7: A much of the practices they just a Factultucky just
- 41:49Speaker 7: started today. They're what they call training camp face and
- 41:53Speaker 7: in the spring with the duties with the keeman and
- 41:57Speaker 7: then finishing up with basketball season and then they get
- 42:00Speaker 7: started a little early.
- 42:01Speaker 4: I did not see a.
- 42:02Speaker 7: Lot of spring practice. One thing I did notice that
- 42:04Speaker 7: he did, and you know from the beginning, Mark was
- 42:09Speaker 7: you know, opening open and welcoming of former players and
- 42:12Speaker 7: all that. But Will is I think actively sought them out.
- 42:15Speaker 7: And maybe it's because it's you guys that he grew
- 42:17Speaker 7: up watching. So you see a lot of these former players,
- 42:21Speaker 7: Tim Couch, Derrik Abney, these guys showing up at practices
- 42:24Speaker 7: and Will will have them talk to the team. So
- 42:26Speaker 7: he's very much trying to connect his current players, even
- 42:30Speaker 7: this in il Ah and all the transfer that transfers
- 42:34Speaker 7: that go on, trying to connect them with famous players
- 42:38Speaker 7: from Kentucky's past that did great things.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Well, you brought up and I'm thinking it was a
- 42:42Speaker 2: very good point when you're talking about the offensive direction
- 42:45Speaker 2: of the deal, because everywhere else that Will has been
- 42:49Speaker 2: be at UTSA obviously most recently in Oregon. And then
- 42:52Speaker 2: I said, when he was the offensive coordinator on one
- 42:54Speaker 2: of the most prolific high school football programs in the
- 42:57Speaker 2: state of Texas right here in Town Lake Travis where
- 42:59Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield win and several other Garrett Wilson with the Jets,
- 43:02Speaker 2: all of these different players that have come through this
- 43:04Speaker 2: incredible offense and their head coach ain't Carter more defensive minded.
- 43:10Speaker 1: And so when Will was here, the offense.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Was left to his devices to try to tinker with
- 43:15Speaker 2: and get better, and they did and it made him very,
- 43:17Speaker 2: very successful, and he was able to parlay that, obviously
- 43:20Speaker 2: into what he's done at the collegiate level. Is what
- 43:23Speaker 2: is it correct, accurate safe to say that Will is
- 43:27Speaker 2: one of those offensive minds savants the way we've heard
- 43:31Speaker 2: Steve Sarkisian you know now and several other guys, you know,
- 43:36Speaker 2: Garrett Lincoln, Riley, several of the other coaches who were
- 43:40Speaker 2: head coaches on the national scene. As this guy steps
- 43:43Speaker 2: into his first head coaching collegiate job.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I think that's definitely true.
- 43:48Speaker 7: Now, I had a healthy respect for the importance of
- 43:51Speaker 7: the other side of the ball because he played for arguably,
- 43:55Speaker 7: year in and year out, the best program here in
- 43:57Speaker 7: Kentucky and Trinity High School, and so their program that's
- 44:01Speaker 7: you know, built on you know, those old time football
- 44:03Speaker 7: fundamentals of defense and physicality and running the ball. So
- 44:07Speaker 7: between playing there for coaches at Trinity High School and
- 44:12Speaker 7: then coming up at U of L as a walk
- 44:15Speaker 7: on quarterback under Charlie Strong, who was a great defensive mind.
- 44:18Speaker 7: There's has been for a long time. You know, he's
- 44:20Speaker 7: been around guys that, uh, you know, value defense, and
- 44:24Speaker 7: so he does. But you know, he's a former quarterback.
- 44:27Speaker 7: You know, those those guys think offensively, and you know,
- 44:32Speaker 7: I think their mind's always kind of working on you know,
- 44:35Speaker 7: what's what's new in the game, what can they learn
- 44:38Speaker 7: he hired Joe Sloan as his offensive coordinator, who had
- 44:42Speaker 7: been at LSU, and you know, he said they used
- 44:45Speaker 7: to to talk uh in the you know, in the
- 44:48Speaker 7: off season or coaches gatherings, just talking offense. Offensive guys,
- 44:54Speaker 7: I think especially like to pick each other's brains. And
- 44:57Speaker 7: it was like that when I was first starting here,
- 45:00Speaker 7: and you know, coach Mummy and Mike Leach were here,
- 45:04Speaker 7: and you know, those guys with that offensive mindset love
- 45:07Speaker 7: to talk offense.
- 45:09Speaker 2: Visiting the Tom Lea's played by play voice of the
- 45:11Speaker 2: Kentucky Wildcats here on thirteen hundred the Zone. Since we're
- 45:15Speaker 2: talking about quarterbacks last year when the log Ones had
- 45:18Speaker 2: that overtime game there in Lexington, the heck of a
- 45:22Speaker 2: football game that went down there, and that sixteen thirteen
- 45:26Speaker 2: ball game, Cutter Bowlly gave a lot of trouble and
- 45:28Speaker 2: then of course Bully ended up transferring the Arizona State.
- 45:31Speaker 2: But Kenny Minsch, he was a guy with some quarterback experience.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Is he the guy who's kind of in the lead
- 45:37Speaker 2: to be the starter in this first season under coach Tein.
- 45:41Speaker 7: Most definitely, there's note any question about who QB one is.
- 45:46Speaker 7: Never started a game but it was a similar situation
- 45:49Speaker 7: with Will Levis when coach Dukes was trying to upgrade
- 45:54Speaker 7: his offense and he hired Liam Cohen out of the NFL,
- 45:57Speaker 7: and Liam found this guy who was a talented quarterback
- 46:01Speaker 7: who was just buried behind another player at Penn State
- 46:05Speaker 7: and brought Will Levis to Kentucky and it really worked.
- 46:09Speaker 7: And so different staff hoping it plays out the same way,
- 46:12Speaker 7: and that Kenny Minshee, by all accounts of people I've
- 46:15Speaker 7: talked to a Notre Dame, took it right down to
- 46:17Speaker 7: the wire with Car last year, and they were would
- 46:20Speaker 7: have been very confident in going with Minshee, but he
- 46:23Speaker 7: was a close runner up. And so now he's been
- 46:28Speaker 7: around college football for three years, but this is his
- 46:31Speaker 7: chance to get the keys to the car. And he
- 46:34Speaker 7: had committed to Nebraska, but once he got the chance
- 46:37Speaker 7: to come and play for Will Stein and Joe Sloan,
- 46:40Speaker 7: with their reputations of what they've done with quarterbacks, he
- 46:43Speaker 7: seized on that opportunity. So he is most definitely the guy,
- 46:48Speaker 7: and now.
- 46:48Speaker 6: It's up to him to take it and run with it.
- 46:51Speaker 2: I want to ask about a couple of other transfers
- 46:53Speaker 2: on the offensive side. One is Dick Anderson, wide receiver
- 46:55Speaker 2: who when he played at Oklahoma cause Texas problems even
- 46:58Speaker 2: as the long O Wrens had been success full three
- 47:00Speaker 2: of the last four years.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Again, so you but the one they lost Anderson was
- 47:03Speaker 1: a big factor.
- 47:04Speaker 2: The other is a name we know well, Cedric Baxter Junior, CJ.
- 47:08Speaker 1: Great guy. Uh and Uh.
- 47:11Speaker 2: There was a you know us table of backs here
- 47:12Speaker 2: and CJ saw an opportunity there and transferred it.
- 47:16Speaker 1: How about what you know so far of c J.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Baxter and and also Nick Anderson, there is transfers on
- 47:22Speaker 2: the offensive side.
- 47:25Speaker 7: At the preseason news conference media day earlier this week,
- 47:29Speaker 7: coach Stein said that Nick was going to be a
- 47:33Speaker 7: little late getting started just we He didn't get into
- 47:38Speaker 7: specifics about what it was, but I think there's just
- 47:41Speaker 7: a little some kind of physical issue of some type
- 47:44Speaker 7: that they expect him to be in the mix here
- 47:46Speaker 7: very soon.
- 47:47Speaker 6: Practices of us had just started today and.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Then I talked to c J. Baxter at media.
- 47:52Speaker 6: Day and he said he's one hundred percent good to go.
- 47:55Speaker 7: And you know, he the the you know, number one
- 47:59Speaker 7: slot and running back is there for him to take
- 48:03Speaker 7: if he takes the opportunity takes advantage of the opportunity.
- 48:08Speaker 7: He did not go through a spring ball and they
- 48:10Speaker 7: were they knew what they had and just wanted to
- 48:14Speaker 7: make sure that they got him to fall camp and
- 48:17Speaker 7: to the start of the season. And so he said
- 48:19Speaker 7: he's one hundred percent healthy. So we're looking forward to
- 48:23Speaker 7: seeing what he does with his opportunity. And then Anderson
- 48:27Speaker 7: Stein has built an outstanding offensive lines. Yes Sports ranked
- 48:32Speaker 7: them third best in the country. That would be quite
- 48:36Speaker 7: a new level back to some of the.
- 48:40Speaker 6: Glory days of coach Stoop's term in that area.
- 48:44Speaker 7: With what they termed the big Blue Wall here. If
- 48:46Speaker 7: they're that good, then they feel very good about the
- 48:50Speaker 7: O line. They have an All SDC candidate at tight
- 48:53Speaker 7: end and Willie Rodriguez in his third year. But the
- 48:56Speaker 7: wide receiver room there's I think I think the feeling
- 48:59Speaker 7: is there's a lot of talent there, but they're waiting
- 49:01Speaker 7: for you, somebody to demand to be the guy with
- 49:06Speaker 7: his play in practice and then when the games starts.
- 49:08Speaker 7: So I think there's talent in the wide receiver room,
- 49:12Speaker 7: but there's not a defined pecking order yet. And with
- 49:15Speaker 7: Anderson being you know, a step late, maybe out of
- 49:19Speaker 7: the gate to start fall.
- 49:20Speaker 4: That gives other.
- 49:21Speaker 7: Guys even more of an opportunity. So we'll see how
- 49:23Speaker 7: that one plays out. CJ, I think is the guy
- 49:27Speaker 7: to start with it running back when when he's healthy
- 49:29Speaker 7: and he says he is.
- 49:31Speaker 2: I got to ask you about this schedule because one
- 49:32Speaker 2: thing that I've talked about teams that play in this
- 49:36Speaker 2: day and age now with the nine conference games, teams
- 49:40Speaker 2: that play a traditional rival at the end of the
- 49:43Speaker 2: regular season a non conference game. We were talking about that
- 49:46Speaker 2: with Georgia Georgia Tech, Florida Florida State obviously the same
- 49:49Speaker 2: with the Cats having to play.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Louisville on Thanksgiving weekend.
- 49:54Speaker 2: The other two it is like you only have two
- 49:56Speaker 2: weeks of non conference play to get in gear. In
- 49:59Speaker 2: the case of Kentucky you got one, You've got Youngstown
- 50:01Speaker 2: State and oh Alabama comes to town on that followed
- 50:04Speaker 2: by a road trip to College Station before the next
- 50:08Speaker 2: non conference game against South Alabama. So I get the
- 50:10Speaker 2: feeling there's that sense of urgency there to try to
- 50:14Speaker 2: make sure that the guys are rammed up and ready
- 50:16Speaker 2: to go. Because yes, the Youngstown State Penguins are the opener,
- 50:20Speaker 2: but the Alabama Crimson Zider week two.
- 50:23Speaker 7: Yes, and you know Kentucky is looking to this new staff,
- 50:28Speaker 7: and you know they are certainly looking.
- 50:31Speaker 6: To be as.
- 50:34Speaker 4: Good as they can be in year one.
- 50:35Speaker 6: But I think certainly understand that it's.
- 50:38Speaker 4: Going to get better.
- 50:39Speaker 7: The way that they're recruiting their their talent based So
- 50:42Speaker 7: the way you even you know, improve that talent procurement
- 50:47Speaker 7: is to pull off an upset. And certainly it's like
- 50:51Speaker 7: the line from the Herbs Brooks character played by Kurt
- 50:55Speaker 7: Russell and miracle, great moments are born from great opportunity.
- 50:59Speaker 6: And they have great opportunity for.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Sure, no doubt about it.
- 51:03Speaker 2: He's Toime Leeds, play by play voice in the Kentucky Wildcats. Tom,
- 51:08Speaker 2: I know we don't see each other in the regular season. Hey,
- 51:12Speaker 2: maybe both teams get on the running, meeting in Atlanta
- 51:13Speaker 2: for the SEC Championship. Otherwise, I know I'll see you
- 51:16Speaker 2: when you come down here to Loustin for basketball, so
- 51:19Speaker 2: we're looking forward to that as well. And then in
- 51:21Speaker 2: basketball obviously a much anticipated pastime there in the Commonwealth.
- 51:26Speaker 2: I appreciate you taking the time and we'll look forward
- 51:29Speaker 2: to seeing you down the road.
- 51:30Speaker 1: Thank you for joining us.
- 51:32Speaker 7: Look forward to getting back down to Austin, and best
- 51:35Speaker 7: of luck to the Longhorns this season, and do coach
- 51:38Speaker 7: stoops and hope they have a since they don't play
- 51:42Speaker 7: the Cats, they can win all their games.
- 51:44Speaker 2: That's true. There you go, Hey, thanks, appreciate it all right.
- 51:48Speaker 2: That is the play by play voice of the Kentucky Wildcats,
- 51:52Speaker 2: and that's Tom Leech Kentucky. Yes, I mentioned they open
- 51:56Speaker 2: their season against Chunkstown State at home, Dennik play Alabama
- 51:58Speaker 2: at home second week of the year and that's a
- 52:01Speaker 2: conference game, and then go to College Station and play
- 52:04Speaker 2: Texas A and M. Before they have another non conference game.
- 52:08Speaker 2: It's against at home against South Alabama. Then they go
- 52:10Speaker 2: to South Carolina and then get this LSU at home
- 52:13Speaker 2: at Oklahoma, Vanderbilt at home, then after an open eight
- 52:17Speaker 2: at Tennessee Florida home at Missouri, and then can they
- 52:20Speaker 2: conclude with their blue Grass state rival, the Louisville Cardinals.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 52:26Speaker 3: Funny schedule because you missed the top two in the
- 52:28Speaker 3: preseason poll with Georgia and Texas not on there. But
- 52:31Speaker 3: you also, if you're Kentucky, don't get to see Arkansas.
- 52:34Speaker 3: Who's your kind of your consensus bottom of the SEC
- 52:37Speaker 3: preseason Power rankings. So it's an interesting schedule. They don't
- 52:40Speaker 3: play back to back road games all year, so that's something.
- 52:43Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll certainly help as well. And our thanks to
- 52:46Speaker 2: Tom Leech joining us. The the SEC previews will continue tomorrow,
- 52:54Speaker 2: like we said, going through three weeks of those, and
- 52:57Speaker 2: we'll take a look at Mississippi State Bulldogs tomorrow. Will
- 52:59Speaker 2: visit when Neil Price they're play by play voice tomorrow. Okay,
- 53:04Speaker 2: time to give away another copy of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 53:06Speaker 2: Football magazine. We're just doing this simply on the random,
- 53:11Speaker 2: simply on the lottery.
- 53:13Speaker 1: All you have to do is be.
- 53:15Speaker 2: The fourth person, the fourth person to reach us via
- 53:19Speaker 2: the talk back line. It's got to be the talk
- 53:21Speaker 2: back line. So download the iHeartRadio app if you haven't
- 53:25Speaker 2: already onto your smartphone, then you search AM thirteen under
- 53:28Speaker 2: the zone. You'll see that red button with a little
- 53:30Speaker 2: white microphone. That's the talkback mike. You press that button
- 53:33Speaker 2: and simply say I want the magazine. The fourth person
- 53:37Speaker 2: to do that. I don't know how you get to
- 53:39Speaker 2: be number four, Like I said, that's the luck of
- 53:41Speaker 2: the draw on the lottery. But the fourth person, we'll
- 53:43Speaker 2: get a copy of We're gonna hear more from Steve
- 53:45Speaker 2: Sarkisan up next on thirteen Under the Zone. Thanks againing
- 53:57Speaker 2: Tom Leach play by play voice. You can tell you
- 53:59Speaker 2: why for joining us. As we mentioned, we have had
- 54:03Speaker 2: on the program so far our first four days of
- 54:07Speaker 2: the three weeks of SEC football previews, there are sixteen teams. Obviously,
- 54:12Speaker 2: any preview you're going to have on Texas is going
- 54:14Speaker 2: to come from this spot right here, but the other
- 54:17Speaker 2: fifteen schools one per day, So that's what every day,
- 54:22Speaker 2: five per week for three weeks fifteen. So that's going
- 54:26Speaker 2: to be the case there, and we'll continue to do
- 54:30Speaker 2: that tomorrow. Tomorrow we visit with a play by play
- 54:36Speaker 2: voice to talk about a team that did not make
- 54:38Speaker 2: a change with its head coach. As I mentioned, Neil Price,
- 54:42Speaker 2: the voice of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, will join us
- 54:44Speaker 2: tomorrow and we'll take a look at Mississippi State under
- 54:49Speaker 2: head coach Jeff Levy and what they're trying to get accomplished.
- 54:52Speaker 1: There in Startville.
- 54:54Speaker 2: All Right, we do have a winner, by the way,
- 54:57Speaker 2: one thing you can always count on. But you're going
- 55:00Speaker 2: to get a winner when it's that lottery and I say, hey,
- 55:04Speaker 2: just be the fourth person to reach us on the
- 55:07Speaker 2: talk back line and you'll win.
- 55:09Speaker 1: And we did get contested number.
- 55:12Speaker 3: Four about that, this guy called his shot.
- 55:16Speaker 10: I'm the fourth person in line and I want the
- 55:18Speaker 10: magazine here on thirteen hundred the zone.
- 55:22Speaker 3: That's j Moya.
- 55:24Speaker 2: Jay, be glad you were not the first person. Be
- 55:28Speaker 2: glad you were the fourth, because we said it was
- 55:31Speaker 2: going to go to the fourth person to check in.
- 55:33Speaker 2: But Jay, you are the fourth to do it. So
- 55:36Speaker 2: you get a copy of the magazine. Like we said,
- 55:39Speaker 2: we'll alternate it between some trivia questions and the luck
- 55:43Speaker 2: of the draw the lottery. Therefore you as well, and
- 55:45Speaker 2: we'll give away another copy next hour with using the
- 55:51Speaker 2: talkback line through a trivia question. All right, let's hear
- 55:55Speaker 2: some more from Longhorn's head coach, Steve Sarkishan, and that
- 55:59Speaker 2: would include the player's conditioning element. And this is another
- 56:06Speaker 2: question media asked pretty regularly, especially at the start of
- 56:11Speaker 2: the fall camp.
- 56:12Speaker 1: I remember Mac Brown used to.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Talk about this a lot about you could tell the
- 56:18Speaker 2: players who had worked really hard during the summer to
- 56:24Speaker 2: keep themselves in physical condition and to improve upon their
- 56:30Speaker 2: physical conditioning. So Sarker was asked are there players that
- 56:34Speaker 2: he could tell that they bought into the summer conditioning
- 56:38Speaker 2: to continue to improve the physical nature of their presentation.
- 56:43Speaker 4: You know, I was.
- 56:43Speaker 9: I'll tell you who I was impressed with. The other
- 56:45Speaker 9: way was Ian Jafard. You know, where his weight is at,
- 56:48Speaker 9: what his body looks like right now, and his ability
- 56:50Speaker 9: to move.
- 56:51Speaker 8: That's super encouraging for us.
- 56:53Speaker 9: Like this guy's down almost twenty five pounds now, you know.
- 56:57Speaker 9: And so I look at it. I look at it
- 56:59Speaker 9: both ways. You know, the guys who built up Colin
- 57:01Speaker 9: Brown looks phenomenal. I mean, you talk about a guy
- 57:03Speaker 9: who's bought into a college program, and I always forget
- 57:07Speaker 9: guys after the fact if I should have said him
- 57:08Speaker 9: or said him and Derek Cooper for a guy who's
- 57:11Speaker 9: just should you know, just to get in here, looks
- 57:13Speaker 9: looks great.
- 57:15Speaker 8: So a lot of the guys that bought.
- 57:16Speaker 9: Into it, Like I said, I think coach Beckton and
- 57:18Speaker 9: his team do a great job with our guys all
- 57:20Speaker 9: summer long. And I thought this team bought into the summer,
- 57:23Speaker 9: you know, they were really committed to the summer.
- 57:25Speaker 8: I thought it was helpful.
- 57:26Speaker 2: Okay, Next, another question that's always asked right at the
- 57:30Speaker 2: start of fall camp workouts, which starting spots would start,
- 57:35Speaker 2: say at this point on August sixth, are up for grabs, a.
- 57:39Speaker 8: Lot of them, you know.
- 57:40Speaker 9: I mean, I think this team is really deep, and
- 57:43Speaker 9: we're gonna need a lot of these bodies.
- 57:45Speaker 4: You know.
- 57:46Speaker 9: You guys know what our schedule looks like, and you
- 57:49Speaker 9: know you're playing playing nine conference games now with Ohio State,
- 57:52Speaker 9: Texas State, and UTSA both probably gonna be bowl teams
- 57:55Speaker 9: this fall. So we've got a we've got a real
- 57:57Speaker 9: challenging schedule. We're gonna need as many bodies as we can,
- 58:01Speaker 9: and the goal is to be a quality too deep
- 58:04Speaker 9: at every spot with hopefully you got a third guy
- 58:06Speaker 9: that can play if he needs to, and so hopefully
- 58:09Speaker 9: we can develop all of that, you know, it all
- 58:13Speaker 9: three phases, you know, because special teams is going to
- 58:15Speaker 9: be a crucial in that aspect as well.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Toward that end, he was also asked for the updates
- 58:23Speaker 2: on guys like Andre Kojo and ty Anthony Smith coming
- 58:27Speaker 2: off of injury.
- 58:28Speaker 9: They're out there, you know, I mean, this first day
- 58:31Speaker 9: it is tough, you know, because I'm trying to watch
- 58:34Speaker 9: We've got two spots going on. I'm trying to see
- 58:36Speaker 9: everybody there. I noticed him today. I don't know exactly
- 58:39Speaker 9: how well they did. It's great to have him back.
- 58:40Speaker 9: I can tell you that we need both those guys.
- 58:44Speaker 8: But you know, got a look at the tape and
- 58:45Speaker 8: see how they did.
- 58:46Speaker 2: Okay, all right, that's that's certainly fair.
- 58:50Speaker 1: And then.
- 58:52Speaker 2: He was asked if there were some new practice structures
- 58:57Speaker 2: in place on field for some of the new additions
- 59:00Speaker 2: to the program.
- 59:01Speaker 9: I don't think so, you know, I mean, I think
- 59:02Speaker 9: that you know, one thing I was impressed with today
- 59:05Speaker 9: and I know this sounds you know, it's day one,
- 59:08Speaker 9: of course it should be. I thought our coaches were
- 59:10Speaker 9: really good today. They coached and they were getting after it.
- 59:13Speaker 9: And that culturally is something that I think is important
- 59:15Speaker 9: for the players to understand that our coaches are going
- 59:18Speaker 9: to be demanding and we're going to push them to
- 59:20Speaker 9: try to be the best that they can become. And
- 59:22Speaker 9: I felt our coaches today and I think that is
- 59:25Speaker 9: part of our culture that we've got to really get
- 59:27Speaker 9: into that the players understand how hard we're going to
- 59:30Speaker 9: coach them to try to get them to become the
- 59:31Speaker 9: best players they can.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Okay, A couple other areas one environment, the spirit, the
- 59:42Speaker 2: nature of the brain work, and the emotion that goes
- 59:45Speaker 2: into a practice session.
- 59:47Speaker 1: What is he looking for there?
- 59:50Speaker 8: I mean, there should be a real level of intensity.
- 59:52Speaker 9: It is football, right, and we got helmets on and
- 59:55Speaker 9: we'll get pads on here in a couple of days.
- 59:57Speaker 8: There's got to be a level of intensity.
- 59:59Speaker 9: But through the intensity, there should be a relative sense
- 1:00:04Speaker 9: of calm that we can execute through that level of
- 1:00:07Speaker 9: intensity and through those stressful moments, because games are going
- 1:00:10Speaker 9: to present stressful moments to us.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Okay, how about what the players and for that matter
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: of the coaches have learned from the experience of all
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: of this?
- 1:00:17Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, experience is great at anything that we do,
- 1:00:19Speaker 9: especially when we can learn from that experience that we
- 1:00:22Speaker 9: can get better from it. I think that lends itself
- 1:00:26Speaker 9: to that sense of calm. Right, Guys who've been in
- 1:00:28Speaker 9: the fire, when those stressful moments present themselves, they don't
- 1:00:31Speaker 9: get overwhelmed with it. And so that experience is huge,
- 1:00:35Speaker 9: you know that that hopefully we can reap the benefit
- 1:00:37Speaker 9: of that when the season does roll around.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: All right, the end of the yang on that is
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: the freshman. How much patience you have to have? What
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: do you look for in the freshmen those types of
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: things and what can you expect when you have freshmen
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: on the field.
- 1:00:51Speaker 8: Do they know what to do?
- 1:00:53Speaker 9: Like this is a very you know, day one, it's
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: really pared down. So can they process the information from
- 1:00:59Speaker 9: the eating room, take it to the practice field and
- 1:01:01Speaker 9: apply it. I don't expect them to be perfect, but
- 1:01:04Speaker 9: that is the best indicator because the skill set is
- 1:01:07Speaker 9: a skill set.
- 1:01:08Speaker 8: We know what that is.
- 1:01:08Speaker 9: But that's the best indicator of what it might look
- 1:01:10Speaker 9: like down the road that they can take in information
- 1:01:13Speaker 9: process and go do learn in the meetings tonight, apply
- 1:01:17Speaker 9: some of the things that they need to be coached
- 1:01:19Speaker 9: on to get better at, and then show me that
- 1:01:20Speaker 9: they can do that again tomorrow. And that's that's the
- 1:01:23Speaker 9: key to the drill with those guys as they kind
- 1:01:25Speaker 9: of work their way through training camp.
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: How about for start what's stay one?
- 1:01:28Speaker 7: Like?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: For him?
- 1:01:29Speaker 9: Fun sweat and it was great, it was hot. But
- 1:01:34Speaker 9: I love training camp. You know, we do so much
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: right now in our profession that when you get two
- 1:01:41Speaker 9: hours on the grass with your team, like I eat
- 1:01:43Speaker 9: that up and.
- 1:01:46Speaker 8: It was fun for me.
- 1:01:47Speaker 9: You know, I tried to really watch our team today
- 1:01:50Speaker 9: and not just be so enamored with just the quarterback
- 1:01:52Speaker 9: and the receivers. I was trying to watch it a
- 1:01:54Speaker 9: little bit more get a sense and a feel, Like said,
- 1:01:56Speaker 9: I wanted to see our coaches, coach. We got some
- 1:01:58Speaker 9: new faces, and so I enjoyed it.
- 1:02:01Speaker 8: I had a blast.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Okay, all right. Next he was asked about more questions
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: about arch. There's always going to be multiple questions about
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Arch Banning. So to Sark, what would a successful camp
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: look like for arch Banning?
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: I think being really efficient, you know, having having really
- 1:02:20Speaker 9: good rapport with with the receivers, the offensive line. His
- 1:02:24Speaker 9: ability to continue to take care of the football I
- 1:02:26Speaker 9: think is huge for him, and then his ability to
- 1:02:29Speaker 9: find those explosive plays that I think we want to
- 1:02:31Speaker 9: be as an offense, and a lot of that's going
- 1:02:33Speaker 9: to come from him.
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: Well, one thing that we've seen is Jelani McDonald be
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: able to be versa whether it's corner safety, nickel, whatever
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: it might be. And so Sark was asked what is
- 1:02:42Speaker 2: the expected role for the senior Jelani McDonald.
- 1:02:46Speaker 9: I hope a big one, you know. I think Jelani
- 1:02:49Speaker 9: is a great player. You know, I don't know if
- 1:02:52Speaker 9: he's getting enough notoriety for how good he really is.
- 1:02:56Speaker 9: I thought he had a great year last year. I
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: probably thought he probably deserves some some All Conference honors
- 1:03:03Speaker 9: and even at the end of last year, so hopefully
- 1:03:05Speaker 9: he can build off of that season. I think this
- 1:03:07Speaker 9: defense with coach Muschamp really fits Jelani. I think Cavin
- 1:03:12Speaker 9: coach Gideon Back is great for Jilani as well. And
- 1:03:16Speaker 9: I think he's had a really good offseason. I've been very,
- 1:03:18Speaker 9: very impressed with him. I mean, he coach Beckton gives
- 1:03:20Speaker 9: out certain grades for guys in the summer and he
- 1:03:23Speaker 9: was a gold You know that that a gold star
- 1:03:25Speaker 9: for him?
- 1:03:25Speaker 8: Is that that's.
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: Huge from where he's you know, where he's grown in
- 1:03:29Speaker 9: our program over the last three four years.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: One thing that Sark has talked about over the course
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: of his now going into his sixth season at Texas
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: is getting bigger, faster, stronger, obviously, but deeper, developing the depth.
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: It was going to have to take stacking recruiting classes,
- 1:03:46Speaker 2: signing classes in order to build the depth that he
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: wants to see out of his program. And so he
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: was asked, where does he see the progress and the
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: meat are going here for the depth as opposed to
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: some of his prior teams.
- 1:04:01Speaker 8: It feels good. You know, we'll see you know again.
- 1:04:03Speaker 9: I think that the portal in some ways helps because
- 1:04:07Speaker 9: you can fill very specific spots. From a debt perspective,
- 1:04:11Speaker 9: it hurts too, we lost a lot of guys, you know,
- 1:04:13Speaker 9: and so how it all ties together and leaning into
- 1:04:17Speaker 9: who are gonna be the young players that are gonna
- 1:04:20Speaker 9: step up and maybe not be frontline players on offense, defense,
- 1:04:23Speaker 9: but play on two or three special teams. Are covered
- 1:04:26Speaker 9: on kickoffs and doing those types of things, because that's
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: where your depth can show up as well. When you
- 1:04:31Speaker 9: can have you know, you're not just bringing guys on
- 1:04:33Speaker 9: the trip when you go to Knoxville that they can
- 1:04:36Speaker 9: contribute in some capacity when we go on the road.
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: A couple more from sark one.
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: How big is the fall camp for this class, for
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: the class of twenty twenty five, now those recruits coming
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: in forward.
- 1:04:49Speaker 9: It's big for all those guys, you know, because I
- 1:04:51Speaker 9: think we live in a society of like instant gratification.
- 1:04:54Speaker 9: The guys a five star and they're supposed to show
- 1:04:56Speaker 9: up and be freshman. Every guys supposed to be a
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: freshman All American and it really doesn't work like that.
- 1:05:01Speaker 9: There's a developmental aspect to a player in our program.
- 1:05:05Speaker 9: And so when you when you just hit three awesome names, right,
- 1:05:08Speaker 9: because I think these guys are poised to take a
- 1:05:10Speaker 9: huge step on our program. From Justice Jonah, Nick Townsend,
- 1:05:14Speaker 9: Amari Winston, a bunch of these guys, Kate Phillips, this
- 1:05:18Speaker 9: is this is a big moment for them, right to
- 1:05:20Speaker 9: see where they've gotten from year one to year two.
- 1:05:23Speaker 8: And we need them.
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: We're as much as we tried to get older as
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: a team, we're still relatively young. I think we're like
- 1:05:29Speaker 9: the fourth youngest team in the country. It's like crazy,
- 1:05:31Speaker 9: I go to the portal and I'm still young, you know.
- 1:05:34Speaker 9: So you know we're gonna be counting on those guys
- 1:05:36Speaker 9: to contribute.
- 1:05:37Speaker 8: To for us.
- 1:05:38Speaker 2: Okay, And then one more from Start asked about the
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: Senate bill, the save College Sports thing, and the the
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: big ten in the SEC are finally on board that
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: are still working through some wrinkles, but it looks like
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: that's going to pass as well. Does Sark see that
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: Senate bill bringing some stability to the whole specter of
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: nil where everybody can be competing under the same set
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: of rules.
- 1:06:09Speaker 8: I think.
- 1:06:10Speaker 9: So, you know, I think anytime I've been saying this
- 1:06:12Speaker 9: all along, I think anytime we have structure, it's good.
- 1:06:15Speaker 9: And we've been operating for the last year and year
- 1:06:18Speaker 9: and a half with very minimal structure, and I just
- 1:06:21Speaker 9: don't think that's healthy, all right, So I think if
- 1:06:24Speaker 9: this bill goes through and some of these things, you know,
- 1:06:27Speaker 9: get streamlined in a sense where it provides structure for
- 1:06:30Speaker 9: all of us, I think that's healthy, you know, and
- 1:06:32Speaker 9: we're not all just kind of living in the wild,
- 1:06:34Speaker 9: wild West.
- 1:06:35Speaker 2: Okay, all right, that's good to know. And we'll see.
- 1:06:39Speaker 2: Because remember this bill. While many were all in favor
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: of it and thought that it was going to be
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: the best thing for college football, in its original structure
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: the way that it was drawn up, it was not
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: too especially some of the top line power for conferences,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: most notably the Big ten in the SEC, and they
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: pushed back on it until there were adjustments made with
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: regard to nil and not only that, with regard to
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: television rights and things of that nature.
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: So apparently there was enough.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: Tweaking of it, a massaging of it, to get it
- 1:07:23Speaker 2: to a point where the bill was something that everybody
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: could live, at least the decision makers in college football.
- 1:07:30Speaker 2: All right, coming up, we're gonna hear more from the
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: Dallas Cowboys, more from sark as well, or more Longhorn players,
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: or excuse me, long Horn head coach team Sarcasian, and
- 1:07:44Speaker 2: we'll hear from Cowboys coaching staff. So stayed with us.
- 1:07:47Speaker 2: One more hour of the show to go. Right here,
- 1:07:49Speaker 2: I'm thirteen under the.
- 1:07:50Speaker 11: Zone Furman final hour of the program here on sports
- 1:08:03Speaker 11: Radio AM.
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: Thirteen hundred The Zone Craig Wade, joined by the producer
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: Jay Carman. Back in the house today, back in the saddle.
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: By the way, I hadn't mentioned this earlier, you know,
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: when we're doing this.
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: There, my my wife Linda, who has yet to meet you,
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: has never met you, nevertheless, feels that on some level
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: your kind of kindred spirits. So she says, she said,
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: she said, I love Antone. She goes, I also feel
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: kind of connected to Jake too, just kind of kendred
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: with some of your philosophies on things and your sense
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: of humor and stuff like that.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: I wonder, yeah, I wonder what specifically made her say that.
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: First of all, I can't wait to have the chance
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: to meet her at some point.
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's just.
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: Conversations that you and I have had on the air,
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: And so I think she kind of almost pictures herself
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: in some of the conversations that she and I have
- 1:08:54Speaker 2: and some of the some of the give and take this.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: Oh I see, I'm her stand in on some of
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: these things.
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: Maybe you may be they I don't know, but she
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: uh but she is uh uh but but she does.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Feel kind of a kinship to you on that. Maybe
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: it's the I have to put up with this guy motif.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Maybe it's something like that, I don't know.
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: Am I that curbudgety does that come through?
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: No?
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: No, no me?
- 1:09:18Speaker 2: Yeah, where she's like I have I.
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: Linda have to put up with this and and and
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: so too does Jake. So maybe it's that, I don't know,
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: I don't know what could be. Could be. I'll give
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: her the benefit of the doubt on the deal. Anyway.
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: We will continue, uh our giveaways of Dave Campbell's Texas
- 1:09:41Speaker 2: Football magazine. Uh So we've already uh, you know, given
- 1:09:44Speaker 2: out a couple of copies, and we're gonna give away
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: another copy, uh at the end of this first segment
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: or at least I'll toss it out there. We've had
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: we've had it's been interesting. Uh so far as we've
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: given away three copies a day, one per hour, and
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: to do this for you know, like I said, a
- 1:10:01Speaker 2: total of three weeks. We're past the midway mark of
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: the first week of the giveaways, and we've had a
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: lot of people, a lot of different perspectives and people
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: winning it.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: And we've mixed it both with some trivia and also
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: we mixed it just going random. Be the whatever eighth
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: person to reach us on the talkback line, because that's
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: what you have to do. You have to use the
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: talkback microphone to access us. We'll repeat it every time
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: just in case some folks aren't up to speed on it.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: What you do is you download the iHeartRadio app. It's
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: very easy and it's free. So you download it and
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: then you search in your search bar or search window however,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: whatever you have on your smartphone, be it an iPhone
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: or an Android, whatever you search AM thirteen hundred the zone.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: When you put that in there, AM thirteen under the zone,
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: it's going to pop straight up. And when it.
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: Does, then you will see a couple of buttons. There's
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: a little white button that's triangular shape that's just to
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: listen to what's going on the ear. It's that red
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: button that you want to pay attention to, the red
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: button with the little white microphone inside of it. You
- 1:11:10Speaker 2: tap that button and then you leave us the voice
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: message with your answer. And as I pointed out, you
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: know a lot of folks, you know, like to reach
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: us instead of using the text line. They like to
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: have their voices heard on a topic, and so they'll
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: use the talkback mic and say, hey, you know, I
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: don't think the long worns a conference schedule is as
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: difficult as a lot of folks think it is. Let's
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: talk about you know, something like that they have thirty
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: seconds to state their case. You don't even need thirty
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: seconds when all you need is that when we do it,
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: you're either an answering a trivia question like you'll do
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: here in a few minutes, or when we do random,
- 1:11:52Speaker 2: let's just say, I say we're going to take the
- 1:11:54Speaker 2: eighth person doing it. And when you contact us on
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: the talkback mike, you're all you have to say is
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: I want the magazine with your name and phone number.
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: That's all you have to do. I want the magazine,
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: so you do that. That's when we do it randomly.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: That's what we did last hour. But this hour we'll
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: have another trivia question coming up. All let's hear some
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: more from longrn's head coach Steve Sarkisian. This was following
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: yesterday's practice, and of course they have the second one
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: going on right now. As we speak, coaches quite often
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: talk about, uh, you know, getting everybody united.
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: On the same page.
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: Aligned is a popular word these days, all those kinds
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: of things, and so sark was asked about what is
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: the biggest challenge of getting a talented, very talented group
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: of players to congeal and play together as a team.
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: I think that's the challenge, you know. I think you
- 1:12:53Speaker 9: answered your own question. I think that's the biggest challenge
- 1:12:55Speaker 9: we have as a coaching staff is to take the
- 1:12:57Speaker 9: talent and give them to play as a team right
- 1:13:00Speaker 9: and and to be a great team, and to understand
- 1:13:03Speaker 9: that they need each other to be as successful as
- 1:13:06Speaker 9: we want to be. And we say it all the
- 1:13:07Speaker 9: time around here. Team success is what then provides individual accolades,
- 1:13:11Speaker 9: awards and honors.
- 1:13:12Speaker 8: It doesn't go the other way around.
- 1:13:14Speaker 9: And so I think us playing as a team is
- 1:13:16Speaker 9: the that's the secret sauce, you know that that we got.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: To get right, very very important. And as I mentioned
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: the other day, the other thing is kind of important
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: is for coaches, and I talked about this with the
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Cowboys training camp, that yes, the macro is to get
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: everybody together, to to be able to blend together and
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: build into a really good unit. Within the framework of that, however,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: as monitoring the individual progress of certain players, and that
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: might even hold a little more you might say, might
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: might might even hold a little more meaning for the newcomers,
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: whether you're talking about a freshman coming in or if
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: you're talking ones who have come in through the portal,
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: and that would include rushing Biles coming into the linebacker spot.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: And what has he seen that Biles has brought to
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: the team.
- 1:14:12Speaker 9: Well, I mean he's athletic, he's fast, he's versatile, he
- 1:14:16Speaker 9: can rush the passer. He's really good in pass covers.
- 1:14:18Speaker 9: He made a great play in pass coverage today about
- 1:14:20Speaker 9: forty yards downfield. So that versatility is huge. I was
- 1:14:26Speaker 9: fired up about him when I turned on his tape,
- 1:14:28Speaker 9: you know, and it was like, this guy's picking off
- 1:14:30Speaker 9: balls and running back for touchdowns and sacking the quarterback.
- 1:14:32Speaker 9: I was like, that's our kind of guy, right, you know,
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: creates turnovers, creates those havoc plays. And so I think
- 1:14:37Speaker 9: it started when I watched the tape, probably even before
- 1:14:40Speaker 9: we got on the phone with them.
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: Continuing with some of the requisite questions with regard to
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: the quarterback, sar College Dress addresses plenty of those in
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: every media availability, and one of the ones that he
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: was asked about Arch Manning was the whole thing about
- 1:14:56Speaker 2: the layup throws, of the throws are going down there,
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: and would he expect to see arch.
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: Improve on that? Would he be surprised if he didn't
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: improve on it?
- 1:15:04Speaker 9: Well, I would be surprised because I think that he's
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: put in a lot of work and I've seen the
- 1:15:09Speaker 9: progress that's been made by him, and that's a credit
- 1:15:14Speaker 9: to him and the time and effort he's put into
- 1:15:16Speaker 9: this thing. So my goal and hope for him is
- 1:15:19Speaker 9: that he just does what I've been watching him do,
- 1:15:22Speaker 9: because I think if he can take that next step,
- 1:15:25Speaker 9: we know the big play potentials there.
- 1:15:27Speaker 8: It's like I say, making your layups is huge.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: Certainly a big part of it all right.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: Additionally, there's always going to be the question with the
- 1:15:35Speaker 2: backup quarterback. You know, I've joked about this, but it
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: was true. It was true that Donovan Forbes, who was
- 1:15:43Speaker 2: a backup quarterback in the late eighties for Texas, who
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: coined that very popular phrase, the most popular man on
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: campus at the University of Texas is the backup quarterback.
- 1:15:53Speaker 2: So maybe that's not the case with everything that everyone
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: is hoping for and expecting of Arch Manning. But how
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: does Sark balance the development and the continued progress for
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: Arch Manning while investing in his backup quarterbacks?
- 1:16:11Speaker 5: That's what we do.
- 1:16:12Speaker 9: I mean between coach Millwy, Coach Bamonte, and myself. You know,
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: I think you know, kJ and Dia have got bright,
- 1:16:18Speaker 9: bright futures and they've made huge strides, and so we
- 1:16:21Speaker 9: pour into all those guys. You know, it's not just
- 1:16:23Speaker 9: about Arch around here. We're going to pour another those
- 1:16:25Speaker 9: guys too.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: And one more from Sark, And this particular one would
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: go to the intensity of his team. Now, you know,
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: you would expect your football team to be intense, and
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: much has been made about the intensity of say Will Muschchamp.
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: With those of us who've been here long enough, remember
- 1:16:48Speaker 2: that from the first go round, and obviously Will is
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: going to.
- 1:16:51Speaker 5: Be like that.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: So that's one thing. But additionally, how about the rest
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: of the coaching staff and does the intensity of this
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: coaching staff trickle down to the players overall?
- 1:17:02Speaker 9: I think so, you know, I mean, I think about
- 1:17:06Speaker 9: all of our guys. I was saying today, I took
- 1:17:08Speaker 9: a moment in team period and I just watched our
- 1:17:11Speaker 9: coach's coach. I was so I was really impressed, you know.
- 1:17:13Speaker 9: And we're fortunate we've got a great coaching staff. These
- 1:17:16Speaker 9: guys do a tremendous job in preparation of getting not
- 1:17:19Speaker 9: only the players prepared and ready to go, but themselves too.
- 1:17:23Speaker 9: And I just think that they coach hard, you know,
- 1:17:27Speaker 9: but I think they coach out of love, and I
- 1:17:28Speaker 9: think our players understand that.
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: Okay, all right, So there it is.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Some things from sark As we've had throughout the course
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: of the program. And there'll be another media availability today.
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: Have to practice. We'll hear some more tomorrow following today's practice,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: and that media availability will hear tomorrow. Okay, we need
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: a break.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: When we come back, we're gonna talk to more Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:17:52Speaker 2: but we're gonna give away another copy of Dave Campbell's
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: Texas Football Magazine. Like I said, we kind of just
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: alternate between doing a trivia question and then just taking
- 1:18:06Speaker 2: the random person checking in through the talkback microphone. So
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: first hour we had a question, and the second hour,
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: last hour, we had the random person checking in. So
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: now it's back to a question again. And this goes
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: back to bowl games. Now, we mentioned the other day
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: about Texas, in fact, yesterday about Texas beating Ohio State
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: in the two thousand and nine Fiesta Bowl. After you
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: know the heartbreaking way that two thousand and eight went,
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: and with the loss of Texas Tech, and through that
- 1:18:46Speaker 2: bizarre tiebreaker that the Big Twelve head that nobody else used,
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: they didn't get a chance to play Missouri, a team
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: they'd already throttled during the year for the Big Twelve
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: Championship and a chance to go on and faced him
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Tebow in Florida for the National Championship. Oklahoma, by virtue
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: of that tiebreaker, then went on the beat Missouri and
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: then lost to Ou and Tebow in the championship game.
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: But Texas of course went on and won the Fiesta
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: Bowl over Ohio State. The next time they would play
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Ohio State in a bowl game was of course that
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: summifinal in the Cotton Bowl a.
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: Couple of years ago when they lost twenty eight to fourteen.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: But to do that, to do that, they had to
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: get past Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: And we know what an epic game that was. What
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: I want to know is what's the final score? What
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: was the final score.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Of that Peach Bowl win in the College Football Playoff
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: over Arizona State? And if you know it, be the
- 1:19:42Speaker 2: first person to reach us on the talkback microphone. So
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: you download the free and easy, easy to download iHeartRadio app.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: You search AM thirteen under the Zone. It comes up.
- 1:19:54Speaker 2: You press that little red butt with a white microphone
- 1:19:57Speaker 2: there and you tell me what the final score of
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: that Peach Bowl was in the.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Twenty twenty four season.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: So you do that, and then you'll have the opportunity
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: if you're the first one to pick up a copy
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: of Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine. Up next, we'll talk
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: to more Dallas Cowboys when we continue on thirteen under
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: the Zone.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: All right here on a Thursday, sus Ramones.
- 1:20:26Speaker 3: Sure is yeah, I thought so on the thirtieth anniversary
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: of their last performance. Really this according to on this
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: day dot com who they performed at the Palace in Hollywood, California,
- 1:20:44Speaker 3: and it was apparently their last performance today in nineteen
- 1:20:46Speaker 3: ninety six.
- 1:20:47Speaker 8: Wow, who would have who would have thought?
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: Okay, did I know?
- 1:20:53Speaker 5: All right?
- 1:20:54Speaker 3: Um?
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: Again, that was tossed out there our trivia question to
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: give you a chance to win a copy of Dave
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: Campbell's Texas Football Magazine. And that question was when the
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: log Worns won the Peach Bowl over Arizona State. And
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: give you a hint if you haven't already, it went
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: double overtime. What was the final score of that Peach
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: Bowl game? Get it correct? Me the first one to
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: get it correct, and you'll win a copy of Dave
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Campbells Texas Football Magazine.
- 1:21:29Speaker 3: Yes, let's see who remembers their overtime rules?
- 1:21:32Speaker 1: Yeah, right, exactly.
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: Not only that, if you don't, let's just say, you know,
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: because we've been given away three copies per day, you know,
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: throughout the course of this week, and we'll do it
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: all next week and all the following week after that.
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: Let's say you haven't won yet and.
- 1:21:56Speaker 1: You're thinking I don't know that I can win. I
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: don't know the answered trivia, and I'm just not lucky. Whatever.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: The nice thing is is that you'll still have opportunities,
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: You'll still have chances to win over the course in
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: the next couple of weeks. So I would say, do
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: not lose hope on that. You know, Cowboy fans certainly
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: haven't lost hope despite the fact that it's been now
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: gonna go be thirty one years when you get into
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: this season. Since that, since the Cowboys have last even
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: appeared in an NFC championship game, let alone made it
- 1:22:30Speaker 2: to a Super Bowl or won a Super Bowl. But
- 1:22:33Speaker 2: you know, hope, spring's eternal every year, and.
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: I've probably heard more.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Optimism, not just from Cowboys fans. In fact, maybe even
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: some more from the fans than the players themselves. But
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: they but the players have all exuded their optimism. You've
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: heard Dak Prescott talk about the whole Super Bowl or
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: bust thing, and other players mentioned it as well. Cede
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: Lamb we heard him during the week talking about it
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: as well, and Brian Chottenheimer, for his points his part,
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: said that's that's the mindset he wants his team to have.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: That goes to his coaching staff as well. He wants
- 1:23:16Speaker 2: them to have that. Christian Parker's a Cowboys defensive coordinator
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: and if you're going to think about Super Bowl, you
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: got to get your players, especially your younger defenders. He's
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: the DC ready to contribute quickly, and Parker knows that's
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: a responsibility.
- 1:23:33Speaker 5: It's a lot.
- 1:23:34Speaker 12: I think you want to number one, be as detailed
- 1:23:36Speaker 12: as you can, but also make it simplistic for them
- 1:23:39Speaker 12: and do things in buckets so they can, you know,
- 1:23:42Speaker 12: compartmentalize the information that you need them to know. Everybody
- 1:23:45Speaker 12: has learned a playbook at some point in their career, right,
- 1:23:48Speaker 12: and some college defenses are more advanced from a sense
- 1:23:51Speaker 12: of volume and things like that than they are in
- 1:23:53Speaker 12: the NFL and in some instances, so the difference.
- 1:23:56Speaker 5: Is the level of detail.
- 1:23:57Speaker 12: He doesn't have to They don't have to worry about
- 1:23:58Speaker 12: study hall and you know, doing those things that college
- 1:24:00Speaker 12: students have to do anymore. You know, if they still
- 1:24:02Speaker 12: have to do them anyways now, but you know, they
- 1:24:04Speaker 12: don't have to worry about those things. So then it's
- 1:24:07Speaker 12: the NFL one on one as we call it. You know,
- 1:24:09Speaker 12: what are the rules? You know, there's gonna be a
- 1:24:11Speaker 12: dB in every preseason game, you know, every year, not
- 1:24:14Speaker 12: every preseason game, but every year in the preseason. You know,
- 1:24:17Speaker 12: receiver catches the ball, he doesn't get touched down.
- 1:24:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:24:19Speaker 12: So those NFL one on one principles, formation awareness, situational awareness,
- 1:24:24Speaker 12: field awareness, all of those different things that it takes
- 1:24:27Speaker 12: to play the NFL style game.
- 1:24:28Speaker 5: You want to advance that with them so.
- 1:24:30Speaker 12: Then they can play with a clear mind and focus
- 1:24:32Speaker 12: on their detail and fundamentals schematically.
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: Parker also understands that if you're going to be better,
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: and especially if you're going to be a contender for
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: a playoff spot, division title, whatever conference title, super Bowl,
- 1:24:48Speaker 2: whatever that might be, if you're going to be a contender,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: you have to be here's that word again, aligned.
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: And part of that is the communication.
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: And he talked about the importance of buying in from
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: his and the staff overall into improving their communication on
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: the field.
- 1:25:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:25:05Speaker 12: I mean, I think if you step in our meeting
- 1:25:06Speaker 12: room and you hear how loud it is, you might
- 1:25:08Speaker 12: think something wrong is going on. And that's a good thing.
- 1:25:10Speaker 12: You know, guys are understanding what needs to be said.
- 1:25:13Speaker 12: And I think you know, communication is two parts, right,
- 1:25:15Speaker 12: So it's giving and receiving. So I can't just be
- 1:25:17Speaker 12: aimlessly yelling and saying a bunch of things if I
- 1:25:19Speaker 12: don't know who I'm talking to, what those words mean.
- 1:25:22Speaker 12: How that changes things when we can adjust something when
- 1:25:24Speaker 12: we can't. So I think they're taking that next step
- 1:25:27Speaker 12: in terms of who am I speaking to?
- 1:25:29Speaker 5: And also if I'm receiving.
- 1:25:31Speaker 12: That communication, I got to make sure my ears are
- 1:25:32Speaker 12: open eye and even know who I'm listening for. But
- 1:25:35Speaker 12: they're definitely taking that to heart. And we still have
- 1:25:37Speaker 12: a you know, more to go, but there's a lot
- 1:25:40Speaker 12: of encouraging things that are happening from a vocal standpoint.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: A lot of conversation about Caleb Downs, the rookie from
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: Ohio State, and he's already flashed some things early on
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: in camp, even though they've only been in pads for
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: three days.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: But Downs is impressive, folks, And.
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: So Christian Park asked, how has Caleb Downs embraced his
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: first opportunities to contribute as a professional.
- 1:26:06Speaker 12: I think he's embraced it from what we expected. You know,
- 1:26:09Speaker 12: he's very willing, he's very curious, and I think that,
- 1:26:12Speaker 12: you know, going to the previous question, curiosity is one
- 1:26:15Speaker 12: thing for young players that you really look for.
- 1:26:17Speaker 5: They want to know the why behind everything.
- 1:26:19Speaker 12: We give them that up front, the intent behind each
- 1:26:21Speaker 12: thing that we're trying to do. And so I think
- 1:26:23Speaker 12: with him, he has that natural spirit about him for sure,
- 1:26:27Speaker 12: and I think that he's managing both positions well, you know,
- 1:26:30Speaker 12: we kind of have a certain plan for him each
- 1:26:31Speaker 12: day in terms of how that looks. We do that
- 1:26:34Speaker 12: for every player, but he's really embracing, you know, what
- 1:26:37Speaker 12: we're trying to do with him and overall as a defense.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: The offensive side, Clayton Adams is the offensive coordinator for
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: the Cowboys, and there's a lot of conversations about how
- 1:26:48Speaker 2: they improve the running game and can they be better
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: at it? Can they be more effected? Most importantly, and
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: this is that old coaching thing about if you can
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: run the ball when the opponent is expecting you to
- 1:27:01Speaker 2: run the ball and you're still effective running the ball,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: that's that's critical.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: That's important. And so Adams was asked about.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: Or if there is something more that he and the
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: offensive staff can do with say Javonte Williams in the
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: run game.
- 1:27:20Speaker 13: Yeah, I mean, I think obviously the guy is pretty
- 1:27:23Speaker 13: good on direct runs and he's hard to get down
- 1:27:24Speaker 13: behind the line of scrimmage. But I think that he
- 1:27:27Speaker 13: is a more diverse runner than he probably gets credit for.
- 1:27:30Speaker 13: I think the guy does a really nice job with
- 1:27:32Speaker 13: some of the outside zone stuff, particularly the weak side.
- 1:27:34Speaker 13: He's got really quick feet, He's able to get in
- 1:27:37Speaker 13: and out of cuts really well, and he's one of
- 1:27:39Speaker 13: those dudes it's not scared to run through the smoke,
- 1:27:40Speaker 13: and that's what you're gonna have to do on some
- 1:27:43Speaker 13: of the what some people would call mid zone, which
- 1:27:45Speaker 13: I don't believe in. I don't think it exists, but
- 1:27:47Speaker 13: some people call it that. I think he's good at.
- 1:27:50Speaker 13: I think he's good at a lot of things.
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: And then it comes down to the sum of the
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: parts of the running game, and that means having a
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: lot of guys who can contribute. One of those is
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: the former long horn Jada and Blue, and we heard
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: Jayden yesterday discuss how he can be better and what
- 1:28:11Speaker 2: he's got to do and what's important for him to
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: be able to earn the trust of his teammates, and
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: Blue was saying, you know, understanding my assignments, knowing where
- 1:28:25Speaker 2: I'm supposed to be, having a ready response, not you know,
- 1:28:29Speaker 2: not just showing up and hoping that it all works
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: out well. Clayton Adams was asked where has he seen
- 1:28:35Speaker 2: the most growth from Jaden Blue.
- 1:28:38Speaker 13: I mean, you know, so far, it's been consistency, which
- 1:28:41Speaker 13: is really what we were looking for last year was
- 1:28:44Speaker 13: to get a professional every day and I think he's
- 1:28:48Speaker 13: had some growth in those areas.
- 1:28:52Speaker 4: You know.
- 1:28:52Speaker 13: I try to make sure that I talk to him
- 1:28:54Speaker 13: every day and give him some feedback on what I
- 1:28:57Speaker 13: think he's doing good and what he's not doing good,
- 1:28:59Speaker 13: and try to make sure that you know, some of
- 1:29:01Speaker 13: these guys are twenty two, twenty three, twenty four years old,
- 1:29:04Speaker 13: and so I just think having to having the ability,
- 1:29:09Speaker 13: you know, which not everybody does, to have like adults
- 1:29:12Speaker 13: on your roster to say, you know, like you think
- 1:29:14Speaker 13: Dak would do that, you know, how do you think
- 1:29:16Speaker 13: that that he's carrying out his day, how do you
- 1:29:19Speaker 13: think he prepared to show up today? Is a very
- 1:29:23Speaker 13: positive thing for us. And so those are the things
- 1:29:25Speaker 13: that we just got to continue to grow and look for,
- 1:29:27Speaker 13: and so far there's been a lot of growth.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: So there are some more Dallas Cowboys for you there.
- 1:29:32Speaker 2: Let's talk a little more INFL. Since we were talking
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: on the subject of running backs, we've seen running backs
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: in recent days coming up with big deals, none bigger
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: than that of Beejon Robinson, the former Longhorn, getting a
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: record setting deal of an extension with the Atlanta Falcons,
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: who's coming up near the end of that first contract.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: And they went ahead and a deal that may be
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: on the highest paid running back in the NFL. Fifty
- 1:30:07Speaker 2: one million guaranteed and as much as seventy five million
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: dollars overall with.
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: The incentives and the things like that. If it all
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: works out.
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: The Lion's running back, Jamir Gibbs is trying to get
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: a new deal. He's one of those, as they like
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: to say, hold ends how to hold out. He's in camp,
- 1:30:26Speaker 2: just not taking part in the physical part of it. Well,
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: the Colts decided to go ahead and get away from
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: any of that deal. They did an extension with Jonathan
- 1:30:37Speaker 2: Taylor two years, forty four million dollars. The deal has
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: a maximum value of forty seven million, and that's thirty
- 1:30:45Speaker 2: nine million guaranteed. That's the third largest deal for a
- 1:30:49Speaker 2: running back in NFL history. Now, Jamiir Gibbs deal win
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: and if it you know, ultimately gets done may earn
- 1:30:59Speaker 2: Gibbs as much even if not more than Beehon Robinson.
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: It might be in that neighborhood, so it may push
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: Taylor's total deal down. Taylor was asked if he saw
- 1:31:10Speaker 2: Robinson's deal that could jump start the talks with the Colts,
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: and he said, hopefully. I've got to talk to my agent.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: I need to go talk to him and see where
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: things are at. I'm just trying to focus on getting better,
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: but I have faith I'm gonna tap it and check
- 1:31:24Speaker 2: him with him now that you guys broke the news
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: to me.
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: So then they went and they got a nude.
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: So he is now under contract with Indianapolis through the
- 1:31:34Speaker 2: twenty twenty eight season. So Jonathan Taylor with that extension
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: for him, So more and more running backs are getting,
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: you know, a little more love in terms of the money.
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: Wide receivers. Odell Beckham Junior, remember him. Remember what a
- 1:31:57Speaker 2: playmaker he was. Remember how big he was in the
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: Super Bowl for the until he blew out his knee,
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: laid in that first half and then had to recover
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: and then went through a couple of deals last year
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: and and you know, ended up on the sidelines for it.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: So now he's trying to get his game back in gear.
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: He had another really strong day of practice yesterday with
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: the New York Giants, the team that drafted him like
- 1:32:24Speaker 2: twelve years ago. So I'm not surprised by this. OBJ
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: as they know him, Modell Beckham Junior is a guy
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: who kind of fashions his career path, let's just put
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: it that way, similar to and a football version of
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: what Lebron James.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: Has gone through. Now here's the difference.
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: Well, first of all, he says, quote, I'm just trying
- 1:32:51Speaker 2: to be present each and every day and prove to
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: myself that I am who I know I am.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: Everybody likes to talk about is he going to be this,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: He's going to be that?
- 1:32:57Speaker 2: And I'm like, hey, Lebron James used to take off
- 1:33:00Speaker 2: for the free throw line, and now if he's taking
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: off of his right foot in front of it, he's
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: still got a different game.
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: But he's still playing at a high level. I believe
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: that can play the high level.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: So it's probably a good thing that the comparisons stopped there,
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: because whereas Lebron can get into the argument with folks,
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: his career can be you might say, really discussed at
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: length as to whether he's the greatest to write there
- 1:33:34Speaker 2: with Michael Jordan or one way or the other.
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: You don't even.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: Make that comparison with Odell Beckham junior with even receivers
- 1:33:44Speaker 2: really good, yes, but has not put together Hall of Fame.
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: Total yet.
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: And by the way, a Hall of Fame game is tonight,
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: the first NFL game if you want to call it
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: the twenty twenty six preseason, you have any plans at
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: all to watch Panthers and Cardinals.
- 1:34:04Speaker 3: Tonight, you know, if I get desperate enough, I will.
- 1:34:07Speaker 3: I was really hoping a couple weeks ago. I mean,
- 1:34:11Speaker 3: I couldn't have dreamed it a couple months ago, but
- 1:34:12Speaker 3: I was really hoping a couple of weeks ago that
- 1:34:15Speaker 3: Nationals Baseball would be able to take precedent on the
- 1:34:18Speaker 3: TV over preseason football, because I haven't been able to
- 1:34:20Speaker 3: say that in the last few years.
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: Yeah, and now that they went through the fire sale,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: it's a different story.
- 1:34:24Speaker 3: I think it's a different story. I think we're watching
- 1:34:26Speaker 3: Carson beck and Kenny Pickett after all, Okay, and.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: You know who else I think we're going to see tonight.
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: I think we're gonna see Haines King tonight. Haines is
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: on the Panthers roster and at the recent Coaching School,
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: a Texas High School Coaches Association's annual coaching school, and
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: the convention that I was at down in Houston, John King,
- 1:34:51Speaker 2: who is the head football coach at Longview and Haines's dad,
- 1:34:55Speaker 2: he was getting two honors. He was being inducted into
- 1:34:59Speaker 2: the Texas High Coach Association's Hall of Honor, and he
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: was receiving an additional award as well for his.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Meritorial service and things of that nature.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: So I visited with him, and I knew that Haines
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: was on the Carolina roster, but I asked him, how
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: you know how things are going?
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: He said, He's been great so far.
- 1:35:17Speaker 2: He's he's been really good, and he's probably going to
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: play in that first preseason game. Okay, one hour if that, yeah,
- 1:35:27Speaker 2: it's it's probably about an hour hour after that banquet
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: is over done. I walked back from the George R.
- 1:35:35Speaker 2: Brown Convention Center and of a skybridge thing. The walk
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: over connects to the Marriotte Marquee where the where the
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: headquarter hotel was. The Coach Association and that's where I
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: was staying. So I go over there and I get
- 1:35:48Speaker 2: a text from Greg Tepper, the editor in chief of
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: Dave Campbells Texas Football magazine who's on with us every
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: Tuesday with his Tuesdays with Tepper thing and TEP and
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: I had kind of tentative plans to meet up after
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: the banquet. Uh, TEP had company dinner and meetings and stuff,
- 1:36:09Speaker 2: so he couldn't he couldn't attend the banquet, but we
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: said we'll catch up backwards. And so he texted me
- 1:36:13Speaker 2: and said, hey, we're down in Bigio's, which is the
- 1:36:17Speaker 2: sports bar inside of the Marriott Marquee of course owned
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: or at least his name is on it, Craig Bigio,
- 1:36:24Speaker 2: the Hall of Famer from all those years with the Asterids.
- 1:36:27Speaker 2: So he said we're down there, and I said, okay,
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: I'll be right down. So I changed clothes, get out
- 1:36:31Speaker 2: of my suit and get more comfortable, and I go
- 1:36:34Speaker 2: down into the bar and Temper is there, and so
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: is the rest of the staff, Ashley Pickle and several
- 1:36:42Speaker 2: of the other ones from Dave Campbell's Texas Football. So
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: we're out there and we're just we're just having a chat.
- 1:36:47Speaker 2: And having a beverage in our hand. And that's when
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: I mentioned I think I mentioned this run on a
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: campig when Jerry Maguire comes up and bear hugs me
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: from behind and we have a we have a chat.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: For a few minutes with him and tepper me.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: We have good chat, and then he leaves and we're visiting,
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: and near the end of the time down there, I decide, Okay,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: I'm going to head back up get some sleep because
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: I've got a busy day tomorrow.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: What would the panel discussion all that?
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: I turned around to go out and who is standing
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: there visiting with one other person but looking at me,
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: squareing the guy, but Haines King.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: So I come up and visit with him.
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: He looked bigger, stronger, all that kind of stuff like
- 1:37:25Speaker 2: a lot of folks are saying about Arch Manning.
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: And I said, how you doing great?
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: Great?
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: Everything going all right?
- 1:37:29Speaker 2: Yeah, all the offseason stuff, getting ready to get into camp,
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: you know with the Panthers. And I said, wow, I said,
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: you may get some action early. He said, yeah, that
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: Hall of Fame game. So I'm I'm going to be
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: looking for Haines King tonight to see if he gets
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: on the field as.
- 1:37:43Speaker 3: Well well good meets it rooting for his success.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: Absolutely state champion Longview Lobo and of course after he
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: started A and M and then of course had the injury,
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: ended up transferring to Georgia Check and finished out a
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: fine career there. Okay, we have more coming up here
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: on this Thursday afternoon on Sports Radio AM Thirtie under
- 1:38:00Speaker 2: the Zone and where you can always visit us for
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: free on the IR radio appen.
- 1:38:05Speaker 3: Just nothing, just enough on a sit day.
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: I have always always been a huge fan of devota
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: of the work of the master Stevie Wonder. Great to
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: Is this another anniversary that you stumbled upon?
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: It is because I don't know if you remember this
- 1:38:24Speaker 3: from from fifty three years ago. Yeah, today Stevie Wonder
- 1:38:29Speaker 3: involved in that car crash in your home state of
- 1:38:32Speaker 3: North Carolina sent him into a coma wow, wow four
- 1:38:36Speaker 3: days Wow. This is my This is my favorite Stevie
- 1:38:39Speaker 3: Wonder song?
- 1:38:40Speaker 1: Is it really?
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: It is?
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: I love Superstition, Yep, I love.
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: Isn't she lovely?
- 1:38:47Speaker 3: Yes? And of course there's I Just called to say
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: I Love you, which, funny enough, is my grandmother's ringtone,
- 1:38:55Speaker 3: except it's not unique to me or the other grandkids.
- 1:38:57Speaker 3: It could be it could be anybody calling.
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: Well, it could, it could, and let us not forget
- 1:39:04Speaker 2: sunshine in my life.
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: Of course.
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: That's that's great as well, sir Duke. So it's wonderful tune.
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:39:11Speaker 1: So yes, glad to hear.
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: That that you know, Stevie wonder alive and doing quite well. Anyway, Hey,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: there was another pro football note I wanted to get to.
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: What do you think about Stefan Diggs being a Washington commander.
- 1:39:25Speaker 3: Well, it's a it's a homecoming of sorts. Look at
- 1:39:28Speaker 3: Diggs being from the greater DMV area. I told the
- 1:39:32Speaker 3: story of my middle school basketball DC Maryland, Virginia. But
- 1:39:38Speaker 3: it doesn't extend maybe all the way up to Baltimore.
- 1:39:40Speaker 3: It's just the greater DC metro area that's in those
- 1:39:43Speaker 3: three states. Okay, A lot of people think it's Delaware. No,
- 1:39:45Speaker 3: it's not Delaware.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Delaware. Does it include then I'm trying to figure out
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: what the dividing line. Does it include College Park, Maryland?
- 1:39:53Speaker 3: That would be on the free Yes, that's very much
- 1:39:54Speaker 3: of the DMV. Okay, all right, silver Spring, yes, Silver
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: Spring is like on the Beltway.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: Sure, yeah, right, Uh not Frederick.
- 1:40:04Speaker 3: No, that you're really reaching going.
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: For Frederick, all right, And if you get much below Arlington, Virginia,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: it wouldn't you're surpassing the southern border.
- 1:40:13Speaker 3: Yeah, you can go a little bit further out past Arlington.
- 1:40:16Speaker 3: Arlington is you know, squarely in the DMV. But you know,
- 1:40:18Speaker 3: you can get out to towards Burke and Alexandria and Fairfax. Yeah,
- 1:40:22Speaker 3: if you're getting closer to Manassas, you're starting to push it.
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: What about East Annapolis.
- 1:40:27Speaker 3: Annapolish, that's not really the DMV.
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: Okay, So the cutoff is somewhere along I ninety seven
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: before you get to Anapolis, then on the east side.
- 1:40:36Speaker 3: Yeah, because then then you're you're you know, those are
- 1:40:38Speaker 3: some of those are Baltimore suburbs.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: I got you, Okay, all right, So Stefan, Now where
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: was he from?
- 1:40:45Speaker 3: Stefan Diggs? I know, I know, I think he went
- 1:40:47Speaker 3: to Good Council. But had he gone to public school,
- 1:40:50Speaker 3: he would have gone to my rival high school, Thomas
- 1:40:52Speaker 3: Wooten in Rockville, Okay.
- 1:40:54Speaker 2: And and he did, by the way, go to Maryland's
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: first fall practice yesterday, and the university shared a video
- 1:41:02Speaker 2: message on Instagram where he said, shout out on my
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: turps and go commanders, let's go.
- 1:41:07Speaker 3: Well, look, he's still able to play at a high level.
- 1:41:10Speaker 3: We saw that last year with the Patriots. So I
- 1:41:12Speaker 3: think it's a great safety blank get as a second
- 1:41:15Speaker 3: wide receiver for Jaydon Daniels. It made a ton of
- 1:41:17Speaker 3: sense and it was cheap.
- 1:41:20Speaker 2: Here's a personal note, personal aside. When the Longhorns played Maryland,
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: Oh I remember this, yeah, well at two ignominious defeats,
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: the one at home Tom Herman's first game in twenty seventeen,
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: and then the next year when they played them at
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: then it was known as FedEx Field.
- 1:41:44Speaker 3: Yeah, that was worse. That was my first game as
- 1:41:46Speaker 3: a student that I watched. Okay, And of course my
- 1:41:49Speaker 3: Maryland friends are just setting the verbal slings and arrows, of.
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: Course, of course.
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: And I think the final was like thirty nine thirty
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: four or thirty four to twenty nine if something like that.
- 1:42:00Speaker 2: Horns were down big though, they were big, and then
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: Ellen ger let him on the comeback and they almost
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: caught him. And the other thing that comes here was pouring, driving,
- 1:42:07Speaker 2: pouring rain at one point, and our broadcast booth was
- 1:42:12Speaker 2: not I've talked about this before, not in a good
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: position when directly in the end zone and low. So
- 1:42:17Speaker 2: we're trying to call some of the action that was
- 1:42:19Speaker 2: down at the far end of the field off. A
- 1:42:21Speaker 2: real grainy monitor in the booth, and the loot and
- 1:42:23Speaker 2: the roofs leaking. Now, we weren't getting the sewage that
- 1:42:27Speaker 2: apparently some other folks did. We've heard about from Washington
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: Pro football games with the sewage leaking from the upper deck.
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: You remember those stories.
- 1:42:35Speaker 3: Leaky sewage glass staircases for people to look up at it.
- 1:42:39Speaker 3: There's so much wrong with that building. It's haunted, collapsing
- 1:42:43Speaker 3: bleachers that almost injured jail.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: It hurts. Yeah.
- 1:42:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: So anyway, my point was going to be was in
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: retrospect looking, guy, I wish they had play that game
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: at Bird Stadium in College Park. Now I do kind
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: of quote unquote mentally collect stadium and arenas that are.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: Pro venues to call games on. So that's one checked
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: off the list.
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: I'm only glad that I won't have to go back
- 1:43:05Speaker 2: there because they do not have Maryland on the horizon.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: All right, the end of the program is on the horizon.
- 1:43:12Speaker 2: We'll be back to wrap up today's edition of the
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: show here on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
