  Today's topic is phantom cries or phantom wails.

  And I'm going to start off this podcast basically by, as I always do,

  telling you a story that I've had with phantom cries or phantom whales,
• 0:51
  my own personal situation,
• 0:52
  and as well as go over some famous cases, as well as some science or explanations
• 0:59
  for what a phantom cry or a phantom whale could be or the reasons for it.

  So what is a phantom cry? Well, let's start off. A phantom cry is basically what it sounds like.

  A cry or a whale or some sobbing typically comes from a child or sounds like
• 1:16
  it's coming from a child or a woman.
• 1:19
  On occasion, it's also a man, but more specifically, it's often children and women.
• 1:25
  And you'll hear this cry or this wail or the sound of distress when there's
• 1:30
  nothing there that could have caused it.
• 1:33
  And this gives us an instinctual response. It's terrifying because.
• 1:39
  It's somebody in pain. And when we're hardwired, that when we hear somebody
• 1:44
  in pain, you know, it triggers some kind of response in us and it makes us scared, want to help.
• 1:51
  But when you can't see the cause of it, it's worrisome and it just makes it
• 1:56
  very eerie and chilling.
• 1:58
  So by the way, if you hear snoring on the side, it's my dog.
• 2:02
  So I apologize for that. But let me go on. I'm going going to start off with my first story.
• 2:07
  I always like to do that. I take this from my marble notebook.
• 2:10
  If you have a chance to look at my other podcasts, I talk about my marble notebook.

  It's full of stories that have to do with ghosts or the paranormal.
• 2:18
  But this one occurred to me about 20 years ago when I had purchased a house.
• 2:24
  It was an old house, over 100 years old.
• 2:27
  To look at it, you would think it was haunted. Everything about it screamed haunted house.
• 2:32
  But Actually, in the five years I lived there, we never had anything paranormal
• 2:36
  happen in the house except for two occasions.
• 2:38
  The first night I slept in the house, and then at the end, when I sold the house,
• 2:44
  it was a few days before I was going to give possession to the house to the next family.
• 2:50
  Those two instances, and they both have to do with a phantom cry.
• 2:54
  So that house, I was told, was owned by a very rich family, and it was their
• 2:59
  hunting lodge. It's a beautiful house.
• 3:01
  And we had closed, my husband and I had closed on the house.
• 3:05
  And the first night, it was in New Jersey.
• 3:09
  And my children were back in the city. We were living in the city.
• 3:12
  We left them in the city with their grandparents. And my husband and I,
• 3:15
  after closing, spent the night in this house.
• 3:18
  It was vacant. It had no furniture, obviously.
• 3:20
  We slept on an air mattress in what would have been our bedroom.
• 3:24
  Middle of the night, we were both woken up. So I'm going to repeat this.
• 3:28
  We were both woken up. by the sound of a crying child.
• 3:32
  It was very unsettling. It was very clear.
• 3:35
  So we got up. We were totally freaked out. It sounded like it was coming from the upstairs.
• 3:42
  There was a thin staircase that led to the top floor, which we were told was
• 3:48
  an attic, but at some point it had been a servant's quarters.
• 3:51
  So there were two bedrooms up there, but it was in essence really an attic.
• 3:55
  We were going to use it as an attic. We go up to the two bedrooms that were upstairs.
• 4:00
  We could hear the crying. It sounded like it was coming from the bedroom on the right.
• 4:04
  We walked in there, but we couldn't see anything. We were so freaked out.
• 4:09
  And then it disappeared. Then it disappeared.
• 4:13
  And it never happened again. And the whole time we lived in that house never
• 4:16
  happened again. It was the butt of jokes. We told people, nobody believed us, so on and so on.
• 4:22
  Well, anyway, the house went on the market and I had moved to a new house five years later.
• 4:28
  My boys and I would come every day after work and we would get boxes of stuff
• 4:34
  and transport it to the new house.
• 4:35
  So this one particular day, my younger son, who was about four,
• 4:40
  at the time, had asked if he could go up to his room and pack some toys.
• 4:45
  Of course, I said yes. I was in the kitchen packing up kitchen items.
• 4:49
  All of a sudden, he comes down and he says, Ma, I hear crying upstairs.
• 4:53
  Somebody, something's crying upstairs.
• 4:55
  And I said to him, it's probably your brother.
• 4:58
  Their brothers, they joked around. The brother was older. He was about nine
• 5:01
  at the time. It's probably your brother. Ignore it. Go back upstairs. Pack your toys.
• 5:05
  He did as he was told. He went upstairs. A few minutes later,
• 5:08
  he comes down. He goes, I don't think it's him. I hear crying.
• 5:11
  It sounds like a baby. I'm telling you, I hear crying.
• 5:14
  I started to get annoyed because I was packing things.
• 5:17
  It was a very frustrating time. We were kind of like living out of suitcases.
• 5:22
  I sent him back upstairs.
• 5:23
  He goes back upstairs, comes back down.
• 5:26
  Now he's telling me, it sounds like it's coming from the attic.
• 5:29
  It's coming from the upstairs.
• 5:30
  Well, the attic, we had converted it to an office. So he said,
• 5:35
  it sounds like it's coming from the office.
• 5:37
  I was annoyed at this time. And I said, listen, it's your brother. Don't worry about it.
• 5:41
  So he just sat on the steps and he refused to go back upstairs,
• 5:45
  which I thought was kind of strange.
• 5:47
  I should have paid attention to him. I actually do a blog post about children
• 5:50
  and spirits and I wasn't even taking my advice here.
• 5:53
  So anyway, I grabbed a box and I went into the living room.
• 5:57
  And for the moment, then I heard the crying and I screamed at my son,
• 6:03
  the older one I said stop messing with your brother and come on let's go but
• 6:08
  when I went into the living room and looked into the driveway my older son,
• 6:14
  was in the car and he was listening to music and his earbuds and he was rocking
• 6:18
  his head. He was listening to music.
• 6:20
  And I turned to my younger son who looked at me and said, I told you something's
• 6:24
  crying upstairs. And we darted out of the house.
• 6:27
  So I never did find out what happened.
• 6:30
  I didn't stay in touch with the family that moved into the house,
• 6:32
  but that's an example clearly of a phantom cry.
• 6:36
  Wish I had looked up the research of the house, but I never did.
• 6:40
  So let's go into some really famous historical cases.
• 6:43
  And let's go to the legend of La Llorena, which is a Mexican folklore.
• 6:49
  La Llorena literally translates into weeping woman, okay, or grieving mother.
• 6:55
  So this is very common in Mexico, and the story changes from region to region,
• 7:02
  and it's actually been carried over the border into some southwestern towns that are on the border,
• 7:09
  seemingly probably people of Mexican descent who had moved into America,
• 7:14
  carried the story with them, but it's common in that area.
• 7:18
  And basically, it's this older woman who the story goes that for numerous reasons,
• 7:25
  she was forced to drown her own children. So she killed her own children.
• 7:31
  Whether the story changes, whether it was because of heartbreak,
• 7:34
  losing their father, or betrayal or wanting to get back at the father, it changes.
• 7:40
  But apparently after drowning her children, she's crying and she screams,
• 7:46
  oh my children, in America, but in Mexican or Spanish, it would be ay mis hijos,
• 7:52
  which means oh my children, because she's grieving their loss.
• 7:57
  And apparently she runs through these towns saying this, people claim to have
• 8:01
  seen it. If you go on TikTok.
• 8:02
  You can find videos of it. It's very, very strange. But again,
• 8:07
  that's an example of a phantom cry, again, in pain, crying.
• 8:11
  My next story is the Myrtles. I've discussed the Myrtles before in one of my
• 8:16
  other podcasts, but the Myrtles story, if you're not familiar with it,
• 8:20
  was of an African slave who lived in the plantation.
• 8:26
  She was going to be leaving the plantation. They were going to move her.
• 8:30
  She was a house slave, so she was going to be moved from the house into the
• 8:34
  fields, which was a harder life.
• 8:36
  And not to downplay that being a slave in a house was not hard but,
• 8:41
  It was thought that to be in the fields, you know, in the elements was actually harder.
• 8:46
  So the story, which is true, was that she poisoned the owner's children in hopes
• 8:54
  that she could, she didn't want to kill them.
• 8:57
  She poisoned them in hope that they would get sick and she would bring them
• 9:00
  back to health and that the plantation owner would keep her on the premise,
• 9:05
  knowing that she was helpful. She was a useful servant because she knew how to cure illnesses.

  Unfortunately, when she poisoned these children, I think she used oleander,
• 9:16
  she put a little bit too much poison in whatever it was that she fed them, and they actually died.
• 9:24
  And so her family then turned her in. She ran to the family who were field slaves
• 9:29
  for help, but they turned her in. She was hung.
• 9:32
  She's known to haunt the Myrtles Plantation. Again, go to YouTube,
• 9:36
  go to TikTok, go to Facebook. You'll find tons of videos, pictures of her.
• 9:41
  But less reported are the phantom cries of the children.
• 9:46
  So apparently if you stay overnight at the Myrtles, you can spend the night
• 9:50
  there, you will hear the children crying.
• 9:54
  Very unsettling, but it's again this phantom cry.
• 9:58
  Another one, I didn't see this when I went to Gettysburg, but it's the Gettysburg phantom child.

  I didn't hear about this when I went to Gettysburg, but I've since researched
• 10:08
  it, And apparently this is another common occurrence, but in Gettysburg, um,
• 10:14
  several people have reported hearing a child cry in the woods outside of the battlefields.
• 10:21
  So crying in the trees, walking through the trees, they claim to see the child,
• 10:24
  but hearing the child, I'm sorry, they do not claim to see the child, only hear the child.
• 10:30
  Again, this is what makes a distinction between a phantom cry and an apparition.
• 10:34
  In apparition, you would see the child.
• 10:37
  A phantom cry, you would just hear the child. So this is common, apparently.
• 10:42
  And what's odd about this is park rangers from the battlefields there claim
• 10:47
  that it tends to come from seasoned hikers and older people who are familiar with the area.
• 10:56
  Hikers that hike and camp tend to not be very skittish and don't scare easily.
• 11:01
  I'm an avid hiker. I tell you, I go out, I hear animals. I don't scare that quickly.
• 11:06
  But apparently this sound scares them. and they describe the same thing,
• 11:12
  a sound of a scared child, but they don't see it.
• 11:16
  And it's been reported that there have been searches in the area and nothing turns up.
• 11:20
  What could it be? Maybe a child having seen their parent die or shooting, who knows?
• 11:26
  But again, another example of a phantom cry. So let's go into closing and why these cries.
• 11:32
  What are the possible explanation for these cries? Well, the first one is that it is a residual energy.
• 11:39
  So residual energy is just that, you know, everything, there's a belief that
• 11:44
  everything that lives on the earth leaves a certain amount of energy.
• 11:48
  Energy is neither created nor destroyed. We all heard that in school.
• 11:51
  So it's believed that sometimes these emotional moments can leave an imprint of an energy.
• 11:58
  And it kind of becomes like a recording that plays back under the right conditions over and over.
• 12:04
  So in the case of La Llorena, if she drowned her children and was crying, Thank you.
• 12:10
  That energy just doesn't disappear. It stays there and it plays on a loop.
• 12:14
  And under the right conditions, either because a person is psychic,
• 12:18
  I believe everybody's psychic to be honest, or the atmosphere is just for that
• 12:23
  area, like this certain time of year, like All Hallows' Eve,
• 12:27
  under those situations, the energy spikes and it comes out.
• 12:33
  Another one is what they call thin veil moments so that's when the the veil
• 12:41
  between the living and the dead is thin and you're picking up a part of time
• 12:44
  that's passed so think of it as,
• 12:49
  timeline shifts so you know a lot of people believe I generally don't believe
• 12:55
  this but But if you listen to Sunset Child's podcast,
• 12:59
  Gary also has mentioned alternate realities or overlapping realities.

  Sometimes, well, some people believe that time exists on the same plane.
• 13:09
  There is no past. There is no future. It's all happening at the same time.
• 13:12
  And so in these thin veil times, the situation, as an example,
• 13:18
  with the Myrtles, children crying, it could be happening what we would think
• 13:24
  of as right now. It's just on another timeline.
• 13:26
  It's happening right now and the veil is thin, so we're experiencing it right now.
• 13:32
  Another thing it could be is just a spirit communication. So the spirits passed
• 13:37
  or had such a traumatic experience that they want to let you know.
• 13:42
  They want to let you know, hey, I drowned my children and I'm grieving it.
• 13:46
  Or, hey, we're being poisoned and we're dying and we know our caretaker,
• 13:52
  the slave in this house, did it.
• 13:55
  Or in my case in the house, maybe a child did die there and it's just kind of
• 14:00
  wanting us to know, hey, I died up here.
• 14:03
  So an intelligent spirit. I don't know. I tend to believe this one out of the others.
• 14:09
  And then the last one, and we got to love our science people,
• 14:12
  right? The ones that make fun of the people that believe in the paranormal.
• 14:16
  And it could be,
• 14:19
  a misrepresentation of what you're hearing. So in my case with the child,
• 14:24
  it could have been a squirrel.
• 14:26
  And my mind interpreted it as a child.
• 14:29
  There was no squirrel up there. I couldn't tell you that much.
• 14:31
  We tore that attic apart. There was no furniture up there. There was nothing up there.
• 14:37
  We opened the windows. It was not coming from the outside. It was coming from the inside.
• 14:42
  So, or it could be something called an auditory pareidolia.
• 14:46
  A pareidolia is, and we've all seen this, you look at a pattern in a wall and it looks like a woman.
• 14:52
  The most common ones are a pattern in a tree, they say looks like the Virgin
• 14:57
  Mary, or a piece of toast might look like Jesus, what have you.
• 15:03
  But that's a visual pareidolia.
• 15:06
  An auditory pareidolia is you hear a sound and it sounds like something else.
• 15:12
  So the most common auditory pareidolias come through,
• 15:17
  you'll hear there's a fan and through the fan you might hear people talking
• 15:21
  or the air conditioner is running and you might hear music very very common and so the scientists,
• 15:29
  and I hope you're there and you can rebut this for me.
• 15:33
  Will say that this was an auditory pareidolia not that I'm lying or these are
• 15:37
  lies but that there is a sound and our mind is filling in the blank by giving it a pattern,
• 15:43
