Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
• 0:02
Epstein Chronicles. In this episode, we're getting right back to
• 0:06
it and picking up where we left off with a
• 0:08
securities captain and his interview with the OIG investigators. Question,
• 0:15
can you look at the shoe staff for both of
• 0:17
August ninth and the very early morning hours of August tenth?
• 0:21
Can you just list the people and let me know
• 0:23
if you inform those people? Answer? So, basically, my hours
• 0:28
were normally let's just say seven thirty to four, so
• 0:31
I ensured that it wasn't within one week, but it
• 0:34
was a process of doing rounds. So I try to
• 0:36
hit every shift. So I hit the day watch because
• 0:40
that's when I work. Evening watch, I stay over late,
• 0:43
I walk up there. Hey guys, this is the situation.
• 0:46
Let's make sure that you know we're paying attention. And
• 0:49
then morning watch of course. Question so beginning at eight
• 0:53
am then on August ninth, can you just look at
• 0:56
who and the names of the people. Can you just
• 0:59
name who was in the shoe and if you ever
• 1:01
had a conversation with them, if they were aware. Question. Okay,
• 1:06
let me see here, Well, we had redacted. I've talked
• 1:09
to redacted Perry's joiner. He was in there. Redacted was
• 1:12
one of the guys that was up there as a
• 1:14
wreck officer. Question so all those people were you had
• 1:18
conversations with specifically with them and you let them know. Answer,
• 1:23
I talk with these guys. Question absolutely. Can you just
• 1:27
name the other people for the shifts after him? Answer?
• 1:31
You got now, Am Thomas. M Thomas. What you need
• 1:34
to understand is that he would have been because you know,
• 1:37
like I said, overtime non custody. He's non custody staff.
• 1:41
I don't have conversations with them. Question Okay, so Michael
• 1:45
Thomas answer, so that means right, because realistically the Morning
• 1:50
Watch and Evening Watch, they don't like to come to work.
• 1:55
Question sure, answer so they if you sign up for overtime,
• 1:59
you say, oh, shoe too is open, Okay, I'll take it.
• 2:02
But you're non custody. So that means anybody can work it.
• 2:05
A teacher, a food service foreman. Question is the shoe
• 2:09
easier to work than the other units? Answer? I wouldn't
• 2:13
say it's easier, but it's less labor intensive because in
• 2:17
my opinion, from when I worked special housing, special housing
• 2:20
was always hard work because I'm going to tell you
• 2:23
why you have to be vigilant. And when I mean vigilant,
• 2:26
you have to understand when you're working that unit, anything
• 2:29
can happen. It could be quiet, but guess what if
• 2:32
you're not walking looking in those cells. Testing the security protocol,
• 2:37
meaning making sure the flaps are closed, making sure the
• 2:39
doors are locked. You want to know that in shoe
• 2:42
sometimes doors was unlocked or flaps open to chase doors
• 2:46
those the food service flap question? Okay, sure answer? You know,
• 2:52
making rounds, making sure the inmates or not have coverings
• 2:55
up when you open up what do you call it? Question?
• 2:58
The window? Answer the windows or put a towel over
• 3:01
their beds and a blocking the light from you being
• 3:03
able to observe them. And I want to go back
• 3:06
because I know about that statement about the doors being
• 3:09
left open. I'm talking about more in general population as
• 3:12
far as when you're making rounds, those type of things
• 3:14
you test, making sure the door is secure, making sure
• 3:17
the food slots are secure. As an officer coming up,
• 3:21
even as a lieutenant, do you know that I've actually
• 3:24
walked in a unit and pulled on the door that's
• 3:26
supposed to be secure and its inmate is wide opened?
• 3:29
Question wow, Ever at the MCC answer no, because that
• 3:34
wasn't my capacity, that wasn't my job. But as a
• 3:37
line officer subordinate, and also when I was a lieutenant
• 3:40
making rounds, that's what I would do when I hit
• 3:43
a unit. It wasn't just to talk to staff. I'd
• 3:46
walk in and look at the security protocol in the unit.
• 3:50
Is there a fire extinguisher there? Good? Your phone work,
• 3:52
counters work, computers work. Hey, Let's walk the block, pulling
• 3:57
on doors, pulling on food slots, showing trying to train
• 4:00
the officers. That's what I used to do. Question lead
• 4:04
by example, answer and guess what happens. You would find
• 4:07
stuff because people in hurry enough to go home on
• 4:11
that evening. Watch them. Inmates know their doors are locked,
• 4:14
but they know they're going to come out because if
• 4:17
they come out, there's a situation. But they'll sit up
• 4:19
there and they'll leave it open. Question so back to
• 4:23
this though, can you look at the other shoe on
• 4:25
you know the subsequent shifts if you had conversations with them.
• 4:29
Answer so Thomas, No, because he is inside of the unit.
• 4:34
You know, he was in charge of ensuring those century
• 4:37
rosters was updated to ensure that the accountability of the
• 4:40
unit was correct, to make sure that the inmates were
• 4:43
placed in their proper cells. Who is this? I'm sorry,
• 4:46
hold on question and so in the Shoe we want
• 4:49
to be focusing on answer Tino Well, Tino Well was one.
• 4:54
Now I know Tova, Now Tova. I can't remember if
• 4:59
I spoke to Tova exactly, but I know I had
• 5:02
hit all three shifts, meaning that day watch, I was
• 5:04
up there on day watch, evening watch. I stayed over
• 5:07
because that's what the warden wanted. He told me, Hey,
• 5:10
make sure you go and hit all three shifts. The
• 5:13
warden told me to do it. So if the warden
• 5:16
told me to go do it, why wouldn't I go
• 5:17
do it? We sat down, he said, these are the
• 5:21
things that I want to happen. First, I want you
• 5:23
to make sure walk through talk about make sure the
• 5:25
staff is aware that we're doing this, this and this,
• 5:29
and also I know that you have that I put
• 5:31
out an email, so I just didn't tell them. What
• 5:34
do you call that question? So you sent an email
• 5:37
to the Shoe Answer? Yeah, I did to all correctional staff,
• 5:41
and I think I still got it. Question to all
• 5:44
correctional staff. Answer yeah. Question did you ever provide that
• 5:48
to anyone? Answer? Huh? Question did you ever provide that
• 5:52
to anyone? Answer? No, they never asked for it. Question
• 5:57
can you absolutely provide that to us? Answer? Yeah, yeah,
• 6:00
I think I have one and we can go to
• 6:02
my office so I can show you. I don't want
• 6:04
you to think I'll bring it up for you. Question
• 6:06
so you would have this Michael Thomas and toven O
• 6:08
Weel been on that email? Answer Tova would have been
• 6:12
because he's a correctional officer, but not Thomas. Question okay,
• 6:16
answer you understand. But however we did was he gets
• 6:21
cut off by the investigator? I thought everyone was considered
• 6:25
a correctional officer. That's not the case. Answer. As far
• 6:28
as emergencies happen. When emergencies happen, regardless of what your
• 6:33
discipline is, we all come together. It means you're going
• 6:36
to everyone. When you came into BOP, everyone was given
• 6:40
the opportunity that when you went through correctional those tactics
• 6:43
that you learned in Glencoe, it was about being a
• 6:47
correctional officer. It wasn't about being a dentist or being
• 6:50
a chaplain or whatever it's about correctional principles introduction to
• 6:54
correctional principles. Question. But as far as there is an
• 6:58
email that just the people that are worth looking in
• 7:00
the correctional officer answer, yeah, and I can show you
• 7:05
that because it wasn't just me just talking to them.
• 7:09
I put out guidance, and I kept putting out guidance.
• 7:12
It wasn't like it was. One time I talked about
• 7:15
inmates being placed on suicide watch, I talked about inmates
• 7:18
putting on there. What is the difference between close supervision?
• 7:22
What is it suicide watch question? Psychological observation answer and
• 7:27
psychological There's no such thing as psychological and that you know,
• 7:31
there's no such thing. It's called close supervision. There's no
• 7:35
such thing as psychological. That was an MCC thing that
• 7:38
day made up. So it's a close supervision and RAA's
• 7:41
suicide watch question. So you have at least one email though,
• 7:46
that you sent to correctional officers saying that Epstein needed
• 7:49
to sell mate. Answer. It wasn't saying Epstein. But I
• 7:52
do have two. I think I gave one email and
• 7:55
one memorandum that I wrote for the five eighty three
• 7:57
packet for Epstein. I think you may have that. I
• 8:00
don't know if you have it. And then I have
• 8:03
wrote another one about the importance of doing thirty minute
• 8:06
rounds in special housing unit. Question. Okay, yeah, if you
• 8:11
after we're done, either you can send it to me
• 8:13
or give it to me. Question. I can give it
• 8:15
to you. I'm going to give you a copy. Question
• 8:20
all right, then, just I think there's a few more
• 8:23
like I don't know how to spell his name or
• 8:25
pronounce his name. Redacted Again, that was another non custody guy.
• 8:30
So redacted I believe worked in he's a material handler.
• 8:34
I think redacted was a material handler, so he's not
• 8:37
correction services anymore. However, did they have a background No,
• 8:41
I'm sorry. Redacted went to R and D, so he
• 8:44
was receiving in discharge. So the staff members worked as
• 8:47
correctional officers, came up as correctional officers, but their daily assignment,
• 8:52
their job descriptions changed. They're whatever they're non custody. Question.
• 8:58
So the people that worked in the shoe and the
• 9:00
correctional officers they were aware of, but people that had
• 9:03
different functions in the facility, they may not have been. Answer,
• 9:08
may not have been because I wouldn't talk to them
• 9:10
on a daily basis. Question and what about do you
• 9:13
know if there was any kind of like post it
• 9:15
notes or sticky notes or he gets cut off by
• 9:18
the guard? Yeah? I had created it was one because
• 9:21
I said orange card inmates. I said, make sure that
• 9:25
these particular inmates have high visibility inmates. And I think
• 9:29
talked about that that the inmates their cards should be
• 9:31
orange and those would be our high visibility inmates that
• 9:35
you and I think I got an email about that too,
• 9:38
about the high visibility inmates inside of the unit. You
• 9:42
should take special care of to ensure that these inmates
• 9:45
are observed when you're doing your rounds. Question anything though
• 9:50
about the actual cellmate requirement though? Do you know if
• 9:52
there was any kind of like sticky note or any
• 9:54
kind of post it saying, hey, make sure that Epstein
• 9:58
he gets cut off by the guard. I can't remember,
• 10:01
But like I said, I was putting out a lot
• 10:03
of guidance, you know, coming from and Jeneau, coming from
• 10:06
the warden and things that I would have thought that
• 10:09
was beneficial to the correctional officers. I was just putting
• 10:12
guidance out. I kept putting it out, you know, like
• 10:15
I said, you know, I'm talking to them, I'm putting
• 10:18
out the guidance. But if they don't open their email
• 10:20
and don't read it. Question, and what about some of
• 10:23
the people who are acting lieutenants somebody like an SOS
• 10:27
redacted answer and misredacted question redacted? Sorry, no, misredacted. She
• 10:34
would work correctional post answer or question, so she should
• 10:39
have known answer. She would have known question. Should she
• 10:42
have known that Epstein had to have a roommate answer?
• 10:46
It's common knowledge that you're supposed to do the thirty
• 10:48
minute rounds and be vigilant. But however, would she know
• 10:52
necessarily that the protocols were placed on Jeffrey Epstein that
• 10:56
he was supposed to have a SELLI. I mean, you
• 10:58
see the orange card, if you see the guidance, I
• 11:01
believe I had put something together that was the OIC's desk.
• 11:05
On the desk talked about the high visibility inmate and
• 11:08
Jeffrey Epstein was high visibility. Question but is it understood
• 11:14
that high visibility inmates like that need a sell MAT answer? Yes, question, Okay,
• 11:21
so you're saying make sure you're doing rounds, but it's
• 11:23
also understood if it's a high visibility inmate. They need
• 11:27
a cell mat at all times. Answer yes. Question and
• 11:31
did they all understand that answer yes? Question okay, and
• 11:36
that included Thomas and Nowel Answer, I don't know because
• 11:41
they're not custody, and I don't believe I had that
• 11:44
conversation with them. I'm not going to lie I didn't
• 11:46
have that conversation with them. Question what about some of
• 11:50
the lieutenants, like acting lieutenants like redacted? Answer mister redacted, misredacted, Oh,
• 11:57
misredacted was in correctional service, and she I believe during
• 12:00
the time was working an attorney conference. She was in
• 12:05
correctional service. She was working an attorney conference during the time,
• 12:10
So misredacted I actually promoted her to acting lieutenant. She
• 12:13
was getting paid as a lieutenant, so yes, she would
• 12:16
have known question, so she would have or should have known.
• 12:21
Answer yes. Question. How about some of these other ones
• 12:24
that were on you said redacted? Obviously you already said
• 12:28
specifically directed him answer if he yeah, I brought him
• 12:32
in the office and we spoke. Yeah. Question do you
• 12:35
know how And I think you had said you spoke
• 12:38
to him on multiple occasions? Is that correct? And made sure, Hey,
• 12:42
make sure this inmate has a cell mate answer. Yes.
• 12:47
All right, folks, we're gonna wrap up right here, and
• 12:49
in the next episode dealing with the topic, we're gonna
• 12:51
pick up where we left off. All the information that
• 12:54
goes with this episode can be found in the description box.
