Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily body here. You are listening to a
- 0:20Speaker 1: five minute Friday from Hurdle. Good morning, good afternoon, good evening.
- 0:25Speaker 1: This week has been a blur for me. I came
- 0:27Speaker 1: back from Los Angeles. I was there to run the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Nike After Dark Tour. I got in late on Sunday,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and I feel like it was off to the races
- 0:39Speaker 1: for me. I know that y'all love a race recap,
- 0:44Speaker 1: and I did talk about pushing myself in the middle
- 0:47Speaker 1: of last week to run that mile, but I feel
- 0:52Speaker 1: like the appropriate place for me to talk about this
- 0:54Speaker 1: is here because I don't want to do an.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Entire long recap for this.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I I haven't felt like I pushed myself that hard
- 1:06Speaker 1: since I ran. The last time I tried to pr
- 1:10Speaker 1: in the mile, which I did, I was in twenty
- 1:12Speaker 1: twenty one, and I literally thought that I was going
- 1:15Speaker 1: to like fall over and blackout. I remember getting to
- 1:20Speaker 1: this point in my body where I was wondering if
- 1:23Speaker 1: it would shut down, like a point that I had
- 1:25Speaker 1: never been to before, and then crossing that finish line
- 1:30Speaker 1: on that day in October of twenty twenty one. It
- 1:32Speaker 1: felt so rewarding because I accomplished my goal of doing
- 1:36Speaker 1: it in less than six minutes, and so I went
- 1:38Speaker 1: into this half marathon on Saturday night with so many hesitations.
- 1:45Speaker 1: I thought to myself, you're a morning workout person. We
- 1:49Speaker 1: don't know how this is going to feel. At six
- 1:50Speaker 1: thirty pm, I thought to myself, what's the feeling going
- 1:55Speaker 1: to look like all day? It's equivalent to your nine
- 1:58Speaker 1: thirty PM You're usually sleeping by that time. So many thoughts. Also,
- 2:03Speaker 1: the course itself was like wildly hilly, wildly hilly, and
- 2:08Speaker 1: so I went into it still hoping to get my
- 2:11Speaker 1: best time, which it is so rewarding and special to
- 2:14Speaker 1: me to say something like that when I just turned
- 2:16Speaker 1: thirty seven, I feel like I am just to no
- 2:20Speaker 1: pun intended, hitting my stride, within my overall health and
- 2:24Speaker 1: well being, within my wellness. I did an inside Tracker
- 2:27Speaker 1: test the other day, which if you're interested in inside Tracker,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I've got a code for twenty percent off that I'll
- 2:32Speaker 1: link to in the show notes. But I did an
- 2:34Speaker 1: inside Tracker test the other day and it told me
- 2:36Speaker 1: that my inner age is.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Actually thirty, which feels so rewarding. I digress.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I feel so good in my body right now, and
- 2:45Speaker 1: I felt like it was in my reach to do
- 2:48Speaker 1: better than I've ever done before, and so I went
- 2:52Speaker 1: for it.
- 2:52Speaker 2: I went for it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I went for it thinking that my past previous best
- 2:56Speaker 1: was like one forty one. I lied to myself it
- 2:59Speaker 1: was one forty foreign change, and my goal for this
- 3:02Speaker 1: was to run it under one forty, which I did.
- 3:06Speaker 1: I ran it in one thirty nine oh seven. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: I did that with the help of a myriad of supporters,
- 3:16Speaker 1: including women that were literally running with me. All of
- 3:18Speaker 1: them had race bibs, no bandits here. Shout out if
- 3:22Speaker 1: you're listening to this to Kim and Casey, Christina who
- 3:26Speaker 1: was on the show last week, and my girlfriend's Steph
- 3:30Speaker 1: and Aaron from the Nike Comms team.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Truly without you.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I needed every ounce of your determination and grit and
- 3:39Speaker 1: the occasional you've got this. Steph was kept saying. She
- 3:43Speaker 1: just kept saying, I see it in you. I see
- 3:45Speaker 1: it in you. And when I was going up those
- 3:47Speaker 1: hills in between ten and twelve, I was like, do
- 3:51Speaker 1: I see it in me? But what happened is that
- 3:54Speaker 1: when I'm running a race, I like to keep my
- 3:57Speaker 1: watch in the mile I'm in. What a metaphor for life,
- 4:00Speaker 1: So I like to be in the mile that I'm in,
- 4:04Speaker 1: And once I got to mile eleven, I knew that
- 4:06Speaker 1: I wanted to see overall where I was at to
- 4:10Speaker 1: understand if I could make it in under my goal.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So I think I turned to my watch and maybe
- 4:16Speaker 1: I saw something that was like one thirty three or
- 4:21Speaker 1: one twenty three.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Excuse me if I'm trying to do it under one forty.
- 4:25Speaker 1: So I knew that I needed to get like two
- 4:29Speaker 1: seven thirty sub seven thirty miles in the next two
- 4:33Speaker 1: point one miles, and that was a little overwhelming.
- 4:36Speaker 2: But also I knew that I had it in me.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Like Steff said, to kick it up a notch, and
- 4:42Speaker 1: I did, and it was hard, but I am capable.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And what again a metaphor for life. It can be
- 4:49Speaker 1: hard and you can do it. It can be hard
- 4:52Speaker 1: and you can do it. And whether or not you
- 4:55Speaker 1: identify as a runner. If you're listening this far, thank
- 4:59Speaker 1: you for always listen to me ramble about these things.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I know that there is so much benefit for us
- 5:08Speaker 1: to challenge ourselves in ways that we are not quite
- 5:12Speaker 1: sure that we can handle. It is that challenge when
- 5:17Speaker 1: you meet that moment when you reap the benefits of
- 5:20Speaker 1: putting yourself out there that you realize that it is
- 5:23Speaker 1: applicable in every aspect of your life.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Period hard stop.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I caught my breath when I was done, and I
- 5:33Speaker 1: crossed that finish line, and I looked down at my
- 5:35Speaker 1: watch and I saw one thirty nine and change, and
- 5:37Speaker 1: I thought to myself that.
- 5:41Speaker 2: What a.
- 5:43Speaker 1: What a moment to persevere through something that felt so
- 5:47Speaker 1: hard and remind myself that I am capable, and to
- 5:52Speaker 1: show myself that when you put your head down and
- 5:57Speaker 1: do the work, you will be rewarded for it. And yes,
- 6:03Speaker 1: in this instance, I accomplish my goal, but I also
- 6:08Speaker 1: am cognizant that the journey is the destination. I love
- 6:13Speaker 1: the process of gearing up for something that excites me.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I love the process of putting in the work, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: if I didn't, then that goal would not feel nearly
- 6:24Speaker 1: as sweet. So I think that that's my takeaway here,
- 6:29Speaker 1: aside from me put yourself out there go after things
- 6:32Speaker 1: that feel bigger than you. Is make sure that the
- 6:35Speaker 1: goals that you are chasing they excite you along the way.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to go
- 6:42Speaker 1: after these things that excite me and do it with
- 6:45Speaker 1: some of the most wonderful and encouraging human beings in
- 6:49Speaker 1: my life by my side. What a gift that this
- 6:53Speaker 1: community has given me. So make sure that whatever it
- 6:57Speaker 1: is that excites you, that it excites you along the
- 7:00Speaker 1: way to don't go after something because you've seen simply
- 7:03Speaker 1: that someone else is doing it. Make sure that you
- 7:07Speaker 1: have a strong why. It was fun. It was really
- 7:11Speaker 1: fun out there. The vibes were high. Would I do
- 7:13Speaker 1: it again? Absolutely? Do I want to run another hilly
- 7:17Speaker 1: race anytime soon? Absolutely not.
- 7:21Speaker 2: I'd be remiss if I didn't say that.
- 7:23Speaker 1: I'm kind of wondering what could happen if I decide
- 7:25Speaker 1: to run a flat fall marathon. But right now I'm
- 7:27Speaker 1: just saying it. No Marathon's in my fall plans. Am
- 7:31Speaker 1: I change? There's a lot going on. Time will tell
- 7:36Speaker 1: my question for you this week. What's something that scares
- 7:39Speaker 1: you that excites you that you want to go after
- 7:42Speaker 1: in the next month or two. What is a goal
- 7:45Speaker 1: that scares you or excites you that you want to
- 7:47Speaker 1: go after the next month or two.
- 7:50Speaker 2: We're in summer.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Let's set a goal together, and when you're thinking about this,
- 7:54Speaker 1: tag me with what excites you over on social You
- 7:58Speaker 1: can always find me over at Emily Body and a
- 8:00Speaker 1: Hurdle podcast And now a listener question. Hey Emily, I'm Praya.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I'm a long time listener of your podcast and I
- 8:07Speaker 1: love your show. I love how you keep it real,
- 8:10Speaker 1: and I love following along with your journey on your
- 8:12Speaker 1: Instagram stories.
- 8:13Speaker 2: You're a very big inspiration to me.
- 8:15Speaker 1: My question for you is I struggle with consistently showing
- 8:18Speaker 1: up for myself. I know you say where there's a why,
- 8:20Speaker 1: there's a way, and I love it, but I just
- 8:22Speaker 1: can't seem to stick to my why. Does that make sense?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Can you help me with staying consistent and remembering my why?
- 8:28Speaker 1: Is there anything that you do regularly to stay in
- 8:31Speaker 1: touch with your why? I know you're really consistent with journaling,
- 8:34Speaker 1: but still anything you can recommend for inspiration? Thank you
- 8:37Speaker 1: so much, Praya. Okay, it's a good question, and you
- 8:41Speaker 1: said the journaling, so I'm gonna fall back to that.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Sometimes you need to meet yourself with where you're at,
- 8:46Speaker 1: and you can do that by having regular check ins
- 8:49Speaker 1: with yourself. So that is why I look forward to
- 8:52Speaker 1: my morning journaling practice. It's just one page. It takes
- 8:55Speaker 1: me maybe all of five minutes. But checking you with myself,
- 8:59Speaker 1: writing out wherever my head is at first thing in
- 9:01Speaker 1: the day, and then ending that journal entry with one
- 9:04Speaker 1: thing that I'm grateful for from the past twenty four hours.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It helps me come back to myself and start my
- 9:09Speaker 1: day with a clearer mind and some calm that then
- 9:14Speaker 1: allows me to get really clear on the things that
- 9:16Speaker 1: excite me, to get really clear on what it is
- 9:18Speaker 1: that I want to get after. Once the day starts staying,
- 9:23Speaker 1: life starts lifing right when you want to articulate your why,
- 9:28Speaker 1: and this is with regard to any of the goals
- 9:30Speaker 1: that you're going after, It really starts with articulating your values.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So once you know what it is that is important
- 9:38Speaker 1: to you every day, then you can set goals that
- 9:42Speaker 1: align with those values. So start by articulating your values,
- 9:47Speaker 1: then you can come up with goals that go hand
- 9:49Speaker 1: in hand with the person that you are and who
- 9:52Speaker 1: it is that you want to become. Every day we
- 9:56Speaker 1: are in the act of becoming, and who you are
- 9:59Speaker 1: now is different than who you were ten years ago.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So continuously doing this inventory is going to be critical
- 10:06Speaker 1: when it comes to being able to identify your why.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I hope that this helps, and of course I'm always
- 10:13Speaker 1: here for your listener questions. You can feel free to
- 10:16Speaker 1: shoot over an email with those two. Hello at hurdle
