Latest / The Slippery Slope / Victims at risk as Police grant Bail to other Police

- 0:10Hi, Jay Fallon, thanks for listening to the Slippery Slope.
- 0:14Look, I've been away for a couple of weeks.
- 0:16I've been do doing too much when it comes to podcasting or
- 0:20anything like that, but have a good couple of weeks off doing
- 0:23other things, getting back into kind of regular life after.
- 0:27Anyway, it's it's been a good couple of it's been a good month
- 0:32anyway. One thing I did notice while I
- 0:35was away when I was down the southeastern corner was that
- 0:38Queensland seems to be suffering from a little bit of confusion
- 0:44and inability to make a decision.
- 0:47A government. I don't know what's what's up
- 0:49with their new governments, but you look at what's going on with
- 0:54the the games, the upcoming Games, you know, and was it
- 0:562032? I don't know it.
- 1:00It just seems like we have been able to, we're not able to make
- 1:05any decent decisions or any decisions that seem to make a
- 1:10lot of sense anyway. And when I look at what happened
- 1:12with the Cyclone wannabe cycling, whatever the heck it
- 1:15was Alfred, it just seems like people just don't or do not have
- 1:24the ability to think wisely. That's what it seems like to me.
- 1:29Everyone freaks out. The thought this, the word
- 1:32cyclone possibly striking your area means the whole area just
- 1:38goes nuts, Absolutely nuts. No, no one prepares for anything
- 1:43early. Apparently Everyone thinks that
- 1:45they need to go out and just buy everything in Woolworths and
- 1:48goals. You know, absolutely pouring
- 1:53down with rain, torrential rain, cyclonic winds.
- 1:57People are driving. You're flipping idiots if you're
- 2:00doing it, But sorry, you are. I just don't understand.
- 2:05It's like from the government down to the general public, it's
- 2:09like we just, we've just lost it as a state.
- 2:12Anyway, that was just a bit of an observation I made.
- 2:16I really wanted to talk about this article or this news
- 2:18report. I would have posted something
- 2:23about it if you want to read it. Sorry, listen to it, probably
- 2:27Jay, listen to it without me saying anything, but we're going
- 2:32to go through this report and this is regarding police in NSW
- 2:39who are being released, who are getting charged with domestic
- 2:43violence offences and they're being released without any bail
- 2:47conditions. So other police officers are
- 2:49putting them through the process these and then releasing them
- 2:52without bail conditions. Would have thought.
- 2:54There's been so much, so many issues, so much public uproar
- 3:01about police investigating police, police not doing the
- 3:04right thing when looking at well, when investigating other
- 3:08police, when charging other police.
- 3:11And yet they're still doing this.
- 3:13These actions are still being taken.
- 3:15This is outrageous, absolutely outrageous.
- 3:20The arrogance of the police officers who who are allowing
- 3:24them to do it, the arrogance of the police who are going through
- 3:29the process and saying, well, we're going to release you and
- 3:32not putting any bail conditions on here.
- 3:34And they think that's OK. Let's we'll look at this video
- 3:38together. It's like I said, it blows my
- 3:41mind that NSW Police think this is OK.
- 3:46Constable Reuben Timperley is accused of repeatedly assaulting
- 3:49and intimidating his former partner, but he was set free by
- 3:53his NSW Police colleagues earlier this year without any
- 3:57bail conditions as he fights the charges.
- 4:00I don't think I ever saw a case where somebody was charged with
- 4:06domestic violence offences, certainly of this nature
- 4:09without. Just say, First off is that when
- 4:12I was doing general duties and dealing with domestic violence
- 4:15issues, I, I cannot remember any time that you would even
- 4:21consider. I actually don't even think
- 4:25because it's been a while since I did any kind of domestic
- 4:27violence handling domestic violence because I was anyway.
- 4:31So I don't think you're even allowed to release people
- 4:35without some kind of bail conditions.
- 4:38Not that I can ever recall, especially if it would have been
- 4:42a police officer. There's no way.
- 4:45But so I don't understand how they're even given the option to
- 4:50do this in NSW. And this is what the it's even
- 4:55worse from what the magistrates saying, you know, with, with
- 4:57what's actually happened. How are they even?
- 5:01How do they think it's this is a viable action to take?
- 5:05Without having bail conditions, it's extraordinary.
- 5:08Let's go back. Without having bail conditions,
- 5:11it's extraordinary, it's very unusual.
- 5:14He's 1 of 42 NSW police officers who have been charged with
- 5:18domestic violence offences since January 2023.
- 5:22Of those, ten were refused bail by police, fourteen were placed
- 5:25on conditional police bail and 18 avoided bail conditions
- 5:29altogether. Among those granted police bail
- 5:32was former Senior Constable Jordan Weston in late 2023,
- 5:36despite his former partner expressing fears for her safety.
- 5:41He was later convicted of repeatedly assaulting, stalking
- 5:44and intimidating his victim. Assaulting, stalking, and
- 5:48intimidating his victim. You gutless.
- 5:51Look at this. The face mask, the face mask,
- 5:54the COVID face mask. Gutless.
- 5:58You're you're strong enough to go on, you know, hit your lady
- 6:02but can't face can't show your face in public gutless.
- 6:09Anyway, it's. Absolutely crucial that those
- 6:12who are in relationships with police officers feel that they
- 6:15have the same protection as the rest of the community for that
- 6:18key danger period between investigation, charging and
- 6:23court. Former magistrate David Hilpern
- 6:26is calling for an overhaul of the system to ensure police
- 6:29officers are not making vital decisions about their own
- 6:32colleagues bail status. He says instead they should be
- 6:36made by the Director of Public Prosecutions Office.
- 6:40Investigations should be at arm's length because there's an
- 6:44inherent conflict of interest between where where police are
- 6:48investigating police, especially, as we know, with the
- 6:51kind of culture that exists. In Victoria, bail decisions
- 6:54about police officers are only made by the assistant
- 6:57commissioner with the Professional Standards Command
- 7:00and the process is overseen by the state's police watchdog.
- 7:04We're open minded to that in New South Wales.
- 7:07Just for a second, Karen Webb, absolute disgrace as a police
- 7:11commissioner. But they're open minded, Open
- 7:14minded. Like I said, it's hard to fathom
- 7:17how they can justify the the police are given the ability to
- 7:23decide on bail conditions for other police officers.
- 7:26How how are you open minded to changing it?
- 7:29It should just be cut and dry. Yes, this should not be
- 7:33happening. And we're going to see that this
- 7:35changes, OK, Even if the police, even if the police just put out
- 7:39their own policy and change it so that even if they just start
- 7:45off like that, how is she even allowed?
- 7:47How is she just standing there with a straight will be a
- 7:51crooked neck face saying, you know, we're open, we're open.
- 7:55It shouldn't be open. Just change it, lady.
- 7:57That's all it's it blows me away that they can't come to this
- 8:03decision without being pressured by the media and you know, these
- 8:09decisions, obviously police should not be making these
- 8:13decisions. We need to have a change in
- 8:15general within Australia when it comes to police handling
- 8:20investigations of other police. There needs to be general change
- 8:25across the nation at. The moment we comply with the
- 8:30Bail Act and apply by the Bail Act objectively.
- 8:32Attorney General Michael Daly would not comment on whether he
- 8:35would consider any changes to the bail Act.
- 8:38Leah Harris, ABC News, Sydney. So the NSW government still
- 8:45doesn't even want to make a firm decision and say yes, we'll be
- 8:50decisive, we're going to change the legislation, please should
- 8:53not be able to do this. It's it's disgusting that this
- 8:57in this day and age with the amount of coverage that we've
- 9:00had media coverage with high profile domestic violence
- 9:03murders, that they could even consider that this is what, you
- 9:09know, police are able to make these kinds of decisions, police
- 9:13and it's for the benefit of police themselves, you know, so
- 9:17that they can be seen. The public have lost trust, have
- 9:23lost faith in our police nationwide.
- 9:27So it would behove police in all states to not put themselves in
- 9:32this situation where police are able to make these kinds of
- 9:36decisions on behalf of other police.
- 9:40You want to be able to put yourself above the fray, Say no,
- 9:44OK, you know, we shouldn't be able to do this.
- 9:48We want public trust. We want the public to be able to
- 9:50have some faith in US. Obviously, the public faith has
- 9:55been at its lowest, I think, in decades, in decades.
- 10:01We want to be able to restore this faith, restore the trust in
- 10:04police and show that we can make the right decisions.
- 10:07And we don't even want to put police in that situation where
- 10:11they feel that they can maybe police just, you know, they're,
- 10:16they're well, I know this fellow, he's a good guy,
- 10:18whatever. And they come up with excuses.
- 10:20You know, he wouldn't really come along and, and, and go out
- 10:23and commit further domestic violence offences.
- 10:26And so they want to give the fellow officer benefit of the
- 10:29doubt. You wouldn't, you need to be
- 10:31able to take that option off the table.
- 10:34So police aren't even put into that situation.
- 10:36They say, well, no, we're not even allowed to do this.
- 10:39These are the bail conditions. Or better yet, no, you know, the
- 10:45head of public prosecutions or something.
- 10:47Someone else will make that decision.
- 10:50It shouldn't be in the ball court for police to be even make
- 10:54in the 1st place. I cannot believe that NSW
- 10:57governments and the NSW Police Commissioner cannot just come
- 11:00straight out and say Yep, this is wrong, it shouldn't be
- 11:04happening and we're going to make changes straight away.
- 11:08Straight away absolutely useless and but unfortunately Karen
- 11:15Webb, probably my opinion, my opinion only one of the most
- 11:21feckless and once anymore, but not a good police commissioner.
- 11:27She's anyway not a great police commissioner.
- 11:31Extremely indecisive and NSW government as you know.
- 11:37Where are you? Where are you in your thinking?
- 11:40We need to be able to protect domestic violence victims a lot
- 11:44better. I just can't believe that.
- 11:47Well, I shouldn't say I can't believe, I can't believe it.
- 11:50I think it's disgusting that NSW government cannot just come out
- 11:54and make a firm decision, say hey, this should not be
- 11:57happening. We see the we see the poor
- 12:01decisions that human resources that recruitment have made
- 12:06across States and territories across this nation.
- 12:09They've really lowered the standard for police recruitment
- 12:14and things need to change. Things really do need to change
- 12:18in the states, in the territories.
- 12:21We need to stop giving police officers the benefit of the
- 12:24doubt. We've seen way too many bad
- 12:27decisions coming within all police States and territories,
- 12:32and something needs to happen, Something needs to change.
- 12:34But it seems like in a whole nation at the moment, our
- 12:37federal government, our state government, within police, all
- 12:41police jurisdictions across the nation, no one is able to make
- 12:46rational, rational decisions. I don't know what's going on.
- 12:50I think it's personally, I think it's spiritual.
- 12:51But yeah, common sense decisions seem to be out the window.
- 12:58This is all my opinion. Let me know what you think.
- 13:01I think it's his poor form across the board in NSW.
- 13:05Let me know what you think. I'm Jay Fallon check out my
- 13:08music, check out the other podcasts I've done Jay Fallon,
- 13:12thanks for listening to the slippery slippery slope.
- 13:14They. Just feel the
