Transcript
- 0:04Welcome to Domer and Sons, a family podcast on Notre Dame football.
- 0:07I'm Matthew Rose, the Domer, and I'm joined by my two sons and co-hosts, William Rose.
- 0:13Hey, William.
- 0:14Hi, Dad.
- 0:15And Calvin Rose.
- 0:16Hey, Cal.
- 0:17Hi, Dad Today is Sunday, September 20th.
- 0:22It is the day after Michigan State game.
- 0:26Episode four, we're gonna have a Michigan State recap and a Purdue preview.
- 0:31We'll be joined later on in the pod by Steele Whowell, who will hand out Michigan State game balls and give us a Purdue prediction.
- 0:39All right, hey, Calvin.
- 0:40A pretty fun day yesterday in college football.
- 0:42Can you, give us a little recap of some of the fun stuff that happened over the course of the last couple of days?
- 0:48Yeah.
- 0:49I'm just gonna say the ranked teams that lost.
- 0:54Houston lost 28 to 26 against Texas Tech, but this Houston team is good, so just watch out for them.
- 1:02Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers lost.
- 1:05I went to bed at night knowing that Lane Kiffin is a schmuck, and he lost.
- 1:10Um- That was kinda fun, huh?
- 1:11Yeah, it was really fun.
- 1:13Texas A&M losing to Kenny Minchey again- and Kentucky 21 to 31 off of a awful performance by Marcell Reed, and- It's kinda great to see Kenny Minchey do so well.
- 1:28I love seeing ex-Irish guys.
- 1:31Uh, maybe he'll come back next year.
- 1:34Yeah, maybe.
- 1:34And sadly, SMU lost 31 to 41 against Louisville.
- 1:40Yeah, that doesn't help us too much, I think.
- 1:43It doesn't.
- 1:44Uh, Virginia lost, but again, Virginia's good as well, so just watch out for that.
- 1:48But one thing to note, even though Oklahoma did win, they won by, I think, eight points to New Mexico, so just watch out for that.
- 1:59I don't think they're a very good football team.
- 2:00Yeah.
- 2:01Uh, if you- everybody recalls Michigan and Oklahoma were in a little bit of a slap fight a couple weeks ago.
- 2:07So Oklahoma just proving out once again that they probably aren't up to the task this season, at least, through the first couple weeks.
- 2:17So good, good for the Irish all in all outside of maybe that SMU loss.
- 2:22We need, for our own strength of schedule, as many, highly ranked teams as possible that we can play.
- 2:29Let's get onto this Michigan State game.
- 2:33Calvin, walk us, through the offensive side of the game.
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:37Um, our line did not look good at all.
- 2:41I was not impressed.
- 2:43It was, it was not impressive at all.
- 2:46Um, there's...
- 2:48It seemed like Michigan State got so much push on us during the run game, and that's not a good thing to see.
- 2:53Mikey Gilbert, have yourself a game.
- 2:55Have yourself a day.
- 2:58170 yards.
- 2:59S- amazing.
- 3:00Wish he could get into the end zone, but he couldn't.
- 3:02Nolan James, 26 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown.
- 3:08If it takes us 26 carries to get a guy over 100 yards rushing against a team like Michigan State, that's not good.
- 3:17Aeneas Williams, he, uh, scored once, nine carries for 29 yards, but the only problem was, after the flag on his celebration.
- 3:29I don't think he got another snap.
- 3:32He did.
- 3:32He did.
- 3:33He did.
- 3:33He might've gotten a couple, but he didn't get a lot.
- 3:36They came out at halftime and Nolan James Jr.
- 3:39was RB1 to start the second half and, you know, that it very well could be where NJJ is our guy at RB1 moving forward.
- 3:50Aeneas Williams, 2.8 yards per carry, not great.
- 3:55Feels like he's, he's forcing it.
- 3:58Nolan James Jr.
- 3:59He can make something out of nothing much better than Aeneas Williams.
- 4:03Yeah, and then the last thing I'm gonna say, if Notre Dame doesn't get our tight ends involved, I was not very impressed by the past two games where we just didn't get our tight ends involved a lot.
- 4:13So if we get our tight ends involved, I think this team will be much better offensively.
- 4:18But other than that, like CJ Card was good and yeah.
- 4:22Yeah, 18 is 24, 234 yards.
- 4:25I think having CJ be the person who bails out our run game can only, you know, we can only do that probably against these inferior opponents.
- 4:35When we get on to BYU away, probably a night game, we're gonna have to be able to run the ball.
- 4:41So, I'm with you.
- 4:42I, I think the line's still trying to figure out who they are and what their assignments really are.
- 4:48I think the tight ends, I'm, I'm with you on the tight ends as well.
- 4:52I- the thing that concerned me the most yesterday with our tight ends was that I didn't feel like they blocked very well.
- 4:59And if there's anything we know about Flanagan and Flanagan is that they can block.
- 5:04We know they can block, but we just haven't seen consistent blocking out of these guys.
- 5:09There, there's a lot to work on.
- 5:11William, defensive side of the ball.
- 5:13Okay, so I thought the defense performed pretty well.
- 5:17They only let up 167 yards, which is impressive, when playing a Big Ten school.
- 5:22Luke Talich looked great filling in for Bronte Johnson, getting a pick and also Don Shuler with the other pick.
- 5:29Um, the two up, the two safeties I think got beat on that one play- Yeah only once, which was Michigan's longest play and most explosive.
- 5:39They held their running back Cameron Edwards to only 38 yards, which I thought was pretty solid.
- 5:44The line was getting pushed around a little bit earlier in the game, but, um, we found a way to contain their run using the linebackers.
- 5:53I thought KVA was really good in the pass rush.
- 5:57He was getting off of blocks really well, but he only recorded one total tackle.
- 6:03Drake Bowen with, seven tackles leading our team, then Sneed, and then Adon Schuler.
- 6:09I thought it was a really solid performance.
- 6:10I thought our secondary performed really well.
- 6:14Everyone was covering for each other.
- 6:15W- there wasn't a lot of big explosive plays that they let up, and I thought our defensive line was really solid.
- 6:23Logan Thomas with the sack, Tion Gray with the sack, and Bubacar with the sack.
- 6:30So I thought a pretty solid game.
- 6:33Yeah, four sacks.
- 6:34You know, that's- Yeah that's pretty good work against a Michigan State offensive line that is fairly veteran.
- 6:41Michigan State had that big 60-yarder which was honestly really disappointing.
- 6:46I think having both Shuler and Talich in the vicinity, you, you would've thought that they would've been able to at least bat that ball away.
- 6:56But sometimes strange things happen, and Michigan State got a bulk of their total yards for the game off of that one play.
- 7:04123 yards passing from those guys, 60 yards from one play.
- 7:08Pretty good day in the office.
- 7:10One more statistic to keep in mind is that the Irish allowed zero points in the second half and only 40 total yards in that second half.
- 7:20That's very impressive.
- 7:21Yeah.
- 7:21I th- I thought whatever Marcus said and whatever was going on in the defensive side of the room was very...
- 7:29He must have said something during halftime, made an adjustment or something.
- 7:32It's very impressive.
- 7:34Yeah.
- 7:34Um, yeah, Notre Dame's plus eight on turnovers which you always like to see.
- 7:39C.J.
- 7:39Carr hasn't thrown a pick yet which is nice.
- 7:40We haven't fumbled yet again which is nice.
- 7:44I would like to see a little more of Francis Brew and a little less of Armel Mukham, if I'm going to be honest, but- Really?
- 7:52Yeah.
- 7:53Yeah, I- look, I thought our defensive line played great.
- 7:56Um, I thought they, the interior line was getting push.
- 8:00I thought the edges, Bryce Young, remember that first play from scrimmage?
- 8:04Bryce Young was- Yeah just a terror.
- 8:07The defense started out very intense.
- 8:09I thought the intensity died off, but that was the most intense I've seen the defense come out.
- 8:15Absolutely.
- 8:16The- And that block punt by Matt Jeffrey.
- 8:19Yeah, the aggression and the intensity which they were playing, Michigan State was relying on play actions and rollouts, just trying to buy more time to get their quarterback to be able to pass the ball, in clean space, and that was hard to come by, and that was mostly due to how intensely we were, we were getting after them.
- 8:40It was nice to see Jalen Sneed out there on the edge as well.
- 8:44Um, I thought he did well.
- 8:46I think he tackled exceptionally well.
- 8:49All of our linebackers tackled well.
- 8:52Yeah, Jalen Sneed was a bright spot.
- 8:54Him and Ausberry looked very athletic out there on the outside.
- 8:58Yeah.
- 8:59It's really, you know, im- impressive work against a Michigan State offense that had been able to score the ball for the first two weeks.
- 9:07So to only allow 10 points, especially the adjustments made, as William said, at halftime, whatever Marcus and Chris Ash did at halftime, it certainly worked.
- 9:18The, the men got the message and came out and we were absolutely dominant.
- 9:23Special teams, two for three from Porath.
- 9:27He missed a, a 46-yarder, which wasn't great.
- 9:32But on the flip side of that, Cal, tell us about what happened positively on our punt, uh, punt returns.
- 9:39The greatest player to ever touch a Notre Dame gold helmet, to touch a blue jersey, Matthew Jeffrey Jordan.
- 9:50Matt Jeffrey got a block punt.
- 9:53Yeah.
- 9:53Your boy, Matt Jeffrey, he got that block punt.
- 9:56That was pretty awesome.
- 9:57Again, came out super fired up, set the tone early, and just made sure in the second half that Michigan State had nothing available to them, no spark.
- 10:08So a, a little bit similar to the Wisconsin game where our depth just completely wore down the opponent, and that's gonna be the case in almost every game this year just'cause our depth is just so good.
- 10:22And it's, it's fun to watch.
- 10:24It's nice feeling pretty certain about how things are gonna turn out in the second half.
- 10:30I look forward to a couple more games like this before we get to BYU, and hopefully by the time we get to BYU we've got this offensive line sorted out.
- 10:40And, that also includes our tight ends.
- 10:44All right.
- 10:45Let's review our score predictions.
- 10:49Uh, so final score was 27 to 10.
- 10:53A little bit lower than we thought for everybody.
- 10:56And this week's winner is Mom.
- 10:59Elizabeth had us at 38 to six, so 32-point differential, um- Wait, wait, wait.
- 11:05Hold on.
- 11:06Yeah I had a 30- No, you- 2 differential.
- 11:08You were 40, you were 42 to 10.
- 11:13That's 32.
- 11:14Huh?
- 11:15That's 32.
- 11:16I understand it's 32, but she had l- she had fewer points.
- 11:19I'm gonna go with we had- We both had 32.
- 11:22You both had 32.
- 11:24I'm gonna default to her.
- 11:25Wait, no, I predicted Michigan State's points.
- 11:27I should get the win.
- 11:30You- Dude, what?
- 11:31What?
- 11:31What is going on?
- 11:32It was 42 to...
- 11:33You said 42 to 10, not 32 to 10.
- 11:35It's Mom.
- 11:38I think Mom should get it.
- 11:38That's the same differential.
- 11:39It is the same differ- You're right.
- 11:41It's the- Let me get it.
- 11:42No, Mom gets it.
- 11:42Let me get it.
- 11:43Come on.
- 11:43No, Mom gets it.
- 11:45What, what...
- 11:45So state your case.
- 11:48I think that All right.
- 11:57Yeah, you guys, okay, maybe you, you both can, you both can share this one.
- 12:00Cal, you had 42 to seven, and then I had 42 to nine.
- 12:04So I think we, we were a little bit more aggressive here.
- 12:06Whether or not the weather played any sort of difference in this, it's hard to say.
- 12:11At the end of the day, guys, for me personally, if they would not have given up that 60-yard pass, and if on that fourth down fake punt, if- The, oh my run to the outside.
- 12:25That was so frustrating to watch if Braelon Edwards would've been able to punch it outside...
- 12:30What are you laughing about?
- 12:32It's Braiden Robinson.
- 12:38Edwards.
- 12:38Uh, I think I just named a Michigan player.
- 12:42You did.
- 12:42Oh, that's awful.
- 12:44Yeah, if Robinson would've been able to punch it to the outside as opposed to cutting it inside, it would've been a completely different deal.
- 12:51Take away those two plays and maybe we see a, a real onslaught here.
- 12:55But nevertheless, 27 to 10, very convincing, to hold an opponent to 167 yards total offense, especially an opponent that had been running the ball so well to 44 yards total rushing.
- 13:06Oof.
- 13:07Pretty impressive.
- 13:08All right.
- 13:08Let's give out game balls.
- 13:10Offense, Cal, who do you got?
- 13:12I got Micah Gilbert.
- 13:13Uh, 170 yards, I think it was seven or eight receptions.
- 13:17Well deserved.
- 13:18He gets my game ball.
- 13:19Yeah, good for him, huh?
- 13:21Great for him.
- 13:22Super fired up about that.
- 13:23Made some really nice plays.
- 13:25Um, used his body well to get in between the defender and the ball.
- 13:28Really, I d- thought was high level receiver work for a boundary.
- 13:34William, game ball on offense.
- 13:36I got CJ Carr.
- 13:38I thought he was incredibly accurate.
- 13:40He had two hundred- 34 34 yards.
- 13:43I thought that he read the defense spectacularly.
- 13:47His deep balls were on point.
- 13:49I think Micah Gilbert, yes, he did a great job receiving the ball.
- 13:53CJ Carr, every single ball that Micah Gilbert caught was in his chest or a little bit in front of him.
- 13:59Just dots, yeah, 18 for 24.
- 14:02He played great.
- 14:03No passing touchdowns, but he had a little flash of Riley Leonard there at the end with the rushing touchdown.
- 14:09Yeah.
- 14:09Yeah.
- 14:10That was awesome.
- 14:11That was awesome.
- 14:11Hard to, hard to argue with either one of those guys.
- 14:14Just to be a little bit different, I'm gonna go with Nolan James Jr.
- 14:17Cal alluded to this, 26 carries to get to his 110- Well, that's four- Or excuse me, 121 yards but 4.7 yards a carry is good.
- 14:27It's solid.
- 14:27It's solid.
- 14:28Look, we've been spoiled.
- 14:29It's good.
- 14:29It's not solid.
- 14:29No, it's good, but 26 carries to just get 121 yards, that's not good.
- 14:36The, the- We've been spoiled 4.7 being the av- the average is the same thing as 26 carries to get 121.
- 14:42Yeah, but if we get 26 carries, we should try to...
- 14:4726 carries with Jeremiah Love probably equals to close to 270 yards.
- 14:53Th- that's just not true Yes, it is.
- 14:55I don't know about that, pal.
- 14:57Hey, look, it...
- 14:58Jeremiah Love and JDP were both averaging almost- You also can't, you can't compare a red shirt sophomore- They were, they- to Jeremiah Love look, we were spoiled last year.
- 15:06I think we all recognize that.
- 15:08Those guys were averaging almost seven yards per carry last year.
- 15:11So, look, 4.7's getting in the realm of probably what to expect given the strength of this line, the quality of backs in that running back room, and the quality of opponents that we face.
- 15:24Yes, they are a Big 10 opponent, yes, they have, some talent, and they also are trying to win a football game and be competitive, so hard to discount against all that stuff.
- 15:35But, we also have a certain level of expectation for our running backs and, right now we're just not meeting that.
- 15:42And I think everybody knows that.
- 15:43I think the running backs know it.
- 15:45I think Joen Sider knows that.
- 15:47And I am confident that they'll get this sorted out here over the course of the next three weeks, prior to getting us to, to Provo and BYU All right, uh, defense.
- 15:59Let's go to defense.
- 16:00William, game ball on defense Luke Talich, one sack, one TFL, one interception.
- 16:07Great game out of him His one TFL was a sack.
- 16:10Let's be clear on that Is that how that works?
- 16:13That's how it works Okay.
- 16:16All right.
- 16:17Fair enough.
- 16:18What about you, my man?
- 16:20Luca Traore, even though he technically only had one sack, it feels like he accounted for a lot more.
- 16:26I feel like every single sack that we had he was helping to disrupt that, and he had a strip sack.
- 16:32We didn't recover it, but he had a strip sack Yeah.
- 16:37And for me, I'm gonna go with Drake Bowen.
- 16:42Uh, Drake led the team with eight total tackles.
- 16:45He didn't have any TFLs, didn't have any sacks, but once again, he was anchor back there.
- 16:49He seemed like he was everywhere.
- 16:51Make an argument for KVA.
- 16:53He was ferocious.
- 16:56Drake was just out there on the field a lot longer'cause KBA is on a pitch count.
- 17:01So I'm gonna go with Drake for my defensive game ball.
- 17:04Wild card.
- 17:06Calvin, give it to us The greatest player All right, William, who you got for your wild card?
- 17:21I was torn between two.
- 17:23I was gonna say Leonard Moore just because they threw to him one time and he had an incredible pass break up, and he was the reason why we held them so good in the passing game.
- 17:34And, my other one is Marcus Freeman and the coaching staff.
- 17:38The, how they talk to the players at halftime, already know they set'em straight.
- 17:44Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:46um, who did you have for...
- 17:50I forgot.
- 17:51I already forgot your wild card.
- 17:52Jeffrey.
- 17:52Jeffrey?
- 17:53The GOAT.
- 17:54The GOAT.
- 17:55Um, who do I have for my wild card?
- 17:58I don't know, Dad.
- 18:00Is it a freshman?
- 18:04Wild, uh, wild card is Mom.
- 18:08For my wild card, I'm gonna go with KVA.
- 18:13Uh, I thought he did a really, really good job on that short pitch count that he was out there.
- 18:18You know, didn't have a lot of snaps, but when he was out there, he was incredibly effective, just so ferocious.
- 18:26He's gonna get, my wild card.
- 18:29yeah, that's it for our Game Balls.
- 18:30Next segment, the Purdue Preview.
- 18:34Calvin, take us through the Purdue Boilermakers.
- 18:39What d- what kind of fun do we have in store for us as we travel to West Lafayette- for a 2:00 PM game?
- 18:47I normally take a lot of time on my previews.
- 18:49I'm gonna make it super simple.
- 18:50Ryan Brown, the quarterback, he's not super mobile, but he can extend plays.
- 18:55Purdue, unlike a lot of these Big Ten teams, is a pass-first team.
- 18:59They're getting pass heavy.
- 19:01Their run defense isn't very good, their run game isn't very good, and they're 1-2.
- 19:06Their losses are to Wake Forest, who actually isn't a bad team, and UCLA.
- 19:10Notre Dame leads this rivalry 59-26-2.
- 19:15Notre Dame has won eight straight, and last year they won 56-30.
- 19:20What do we need to know about their receivers?
- 19:22You talked about their passing game.
- 19:24Who are these receivers that, that they, they throw the ball to?
- 19:27All right.
- 19:28Watch out for Xavier Townsend.
- 19:30Last week against...
- 19:31Or I should say yesterday against UCLA, he had 162 receiving yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard one.
- 19:39Wow.
- 19:40Wow.
- 19:40Awesome.
- 19:41Yeah, it, it looks to me on paper that, that Pur- yeah Gonna be an ass-kickin'.
- 19:46Yeah.
- 19:46They, Purdue does not run the ball.
- 19:50That's kind of what we've gleaned from their first three games.
- 19:53They're not very effective at running the ball.
- 19:55They are effective at passing, and they are effective at scoring.
- 19:59They're averaging 39.3 points a game, have scored 36 points in all three of their games.
- 20:05So Offensively, they can move the ball, but it's very pass heavy.
- 20:10And if there's anything we know about the Irish defense, I think our secondary is pretty good.
- 20:16Mm-hmm.
- 20:17So my sense is, is that the four sacks we got against Michigan State this week, I'd imagine that might be probably six for the Purdue game.
- 20:27That's my prediction.
- 20:28I think we're gonna have six sacks against those.
- 20:31What makes you say that?
- 20:31I don't think their, offensive line is as good as Mi- Michigan State.
- 20:35What makes you say that?
- 20:37Well, I think the level of competition they've had and what they've given up, given up in terms of sacks versus that competition.
- 20:45What have they given up?
- 20:46Uh, against- UCLA UCLA they gave up four total sacks and against a UCLA defensive line that's not nearly as deep and nearly as athletic as our defensive line.
- 21:00I feel pretty good about this.
- 21:05I think if we can start off quickly like we have in previous games against Purdue, um, I think we put up a 60 spot on them and a 56 spot on them the last two years in a row.
- 21:17We have a quick start like we have had in the past.
- 21:21Win the turnover margin.
- 21:22This game could get out of control really, really quickly All right.
- 21:30So our special guests this week, we actually have two guests for us on episode four here for the Michigan State recap and the Purdue preview.
- 21:40We've got Steel Wool and his son Steeler.
- 21:43Just as some background, Steel and I were teammates at Notre Dame for two years, and, over the course of that time became very close friends.
- 21:55Ironically, we, we both married teammates as well, and those two, our wives were bridesmaids in respective weddings together, a maid of honor in s- re- respective weddings together.
- 22:07So, there's a lot of personal history with us.
- 22:10We love his family, his three kids.
- 22:13Particularly fond of this guy right here, Steeler, who is a senior.
- 22:19And, um, are we allowed to, to break some news about a commitment or not?
- 22:25You can break it.
- 22:26Yeah.
- 22:26All good.
- 22:27Yeah?
- 22:27So Steeler, where are you committing to spend the next four years of your life swimming?
- 22:33Cornell University.
- 22:34Ah.
- 22:35That's awesome.
- 22:36That's awesome.
- 22:37So you and Vinnie Freeman.
- 22:38You know that, uh, Marcus' son is a sophomore?
- 22:41Or is he a freshman?
- 22:42I don't know.
- 22:43I think he's, he's a freshman now, but on the plane to Detroit back on Wisconsin, Vinnie Freeman was on our flight, so.
- 22:52Yeah.
- 22:53Nice.
- 22:53That's pretty cool.
- 22:54Didn't know that.
- 22:55Yeah.
- 22:55Yeah.
- 22:56So he's, uh, he's gonna be wrestling for the, the, the Bears.
- 23:00Is it the Bears?
- 23:01Mm.
- 23:01Yeah.
- 23:02Go Big Red.
- 23:02Go Big Red.
- 23:03Bears.
- 23:03I love it.
- 23:04I love it.
- 23:05All right, guys, uh, Michigan State, you watch the game?
- 23:10We did.
- 23:11We did.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:12Yeah.
- 23:12It was a little watching it on our phone'cause we landed on the plane, and then, getting to, a place that we could see it on a bigger screen.
- 23:17But, yeah, it was awesome.
- 23:18Thanks for the invite, first of all.
- 23:20Rose, thanks for the intro.
- 23:22Thanks for the shout-out to the Wisconsin game a few weeks back, which was a great way to kick off the season, see all you guys.
- 23:27So- Yeah, thanks super excited here.
- 23:29Michigan State.
- 23:30Steeler, what do you think?
- 23:31Yeah.
- 23:32Do you have game balls for Michigan State?
- 23:33Offense, defense, wild card?
- 23:36I think we got off to a slow start, but CJ Carr had a really, great game.
- 23:41First, I think his first quarter, third quarter, and fourth quarter, he was just on target the whole game, had some nice, passes, so I'll give him my offensive game ball.
- 23:49My defensive game ball will go to, Talich.
- 23:53Had a couple tackles, had a sack, had an interception.
- 23:56And my wild card is gonna go to Micah Gilbert.
- 23:59He just had a amazing game, breakout game, amazing catches all around, so- Yeah, I love those those are my game balls.
- 24:10Hard to, hard, hard to argue with those.
- 24:10Great picks.
- 24:11What about you, Steel?
- 24:13Well, first I'm gonna do, uh, just Michigan State, give a little background.
- 24:17I don't know if you guys mentioned this before, but, from 1997 to 2000, we lost four straight, right when I was in school.
- 24:25So- The, the, my history with Michigan State, although Michigan State in Notre Dame nation is not the biggest rivalry, you know, USC, Miami, Michigan.
- 24:35But for me, Michigan State was always, like, such a thorn in our side, so it feels so good to beat Michigan State.
- 24:42Um, losing four straight during that run was not good.
- 24:46Um, so I'm gonna go with, offense, I had a trinity.
- 24:51I had Carr, Gilbert, and Nolan James, but I'm gonna bring it, if I had to give one, I'm gonna go Nolan James.
- 24:57I'm doing that because- My man.
- 24:59There was some huge pickups on third down, on short yardage, where the offensive line wasn't really getting a big push.
- 25:06He had to make something happen, cut up field and get the first down and keep the ball moving and, so I'm gonna go with Nolan James as far as offensive game ball for that little extra effort that we needed all, all game, plus his stats were off the charts.
- 25:19So I'm going offense with Nolan James.
- 25:21Defense, I'm following Steeler there with Talich.
- 25:24I, I loved his, that, that safety pick early on was awesome.
- 25:28I love how he can cover the ground and his long reach to grab that ball.
- 25:31Plus had a sack later in the game, so I'm going Talich defense.
- 25:36Wild card, I think you mentioned this before, but Notre Dame depth chart, and I'll also say just their fitness level.
- 25:42I know you like fitness, so- We're gonna I'm, I'm gonna go Notre Dame's, as the game wore on, as you've seen in the first three games, the, the teams cannot compete with the fresh bodies we're putting in and the level of fitness that they have throughout the game to just bring it on every play into the third and fourth quarter.
- 26:00I thought Michigan State came out playing physical like Wisconsin.
- 26:04They gave us a challenge on the line, certainly, early in the game, made it close, but I think as the game wore on you saw the offensive line finally starting to wear them out and, so I'm, my wild card is going there.
- 26:14I'm gonna give an alternate wild card to the camera crew.
- 26:18I don't know if you guys saw this on, the TV, but I know a lot of the guys were at the game, but, there was a shot of Carr throwing the ball- I think it was Gilbert.
- 26:28It may have been, Faison Faison.
- 26:31He's doing some down and in, and the ball is...
- 26:34The, the camera angle caught it from the end zone looking past the receiver back at Carr.
- 26:40I don't think you guys saw this.
- 26:41He throws the ball before the receiver makes the cut.
- 26:45Oh, yeah.
- 26:46Yeah, yeah.
- 26:46Yeah it was to Gilbert, yeah.
- 26:47A- and it just highlights, it's such a good catch of highlighting the timing of these plays and how critical that is.
- 26:54And the ball is gone from his hand before he even turns to look at it, and he turns, and the ball's right there on the numbers.
- 26:59C.J.
- 27:00was one of my possibilities for the offensive game ball, and so I thought he played amazing as well.
- 27:05And, and that was a g- a play that really highlighted that yeah, Steel, do you know what, Matthew Rose likes more than fitness?
- 27:11Stop.
- 27:12What?
- 27:14What- It starts with an F.
- 27:17So does fitness.
- 27:19It's called freshman.
- 27:23These guys, these guys can't get it out of their heads- You gotta keep your head you know?
- 27:26You dated- You gotta keep- her when she was 18.
- 27:30That's- When you were- You know what?
- 27:31Steele dated a freshman, too.
- 27:33He ended up marrying her.
- 27:34Yeah, but he was a junior not a senior.
- 27:37No, I was a sophomore.
- 27:38What are you talking about?
- 27:38He was a s- he was a sophomore.
- 27:39Yeah, so it's not even that impressive.
- 27:41You made it worse for yourself.
- 27:41What's, what's two years?
- 27:43Also, think about this.
- 27:44When you were starting your freshman year in college- mom was a sophomore in high school.
- 27:50When you were three years old, mom was still in the womb.
- 27:52I- That is, I don't think that's pertinent it's not relative to where we are now.
- 28:00Yes.
- 28:00Steel can attest that I was probably mature enough at 22 or 21 to date a freshman.
- 28:06Oh, for sure.
- 28:06Yeah, you were all that.
- 28:07Was m- was mom mature for her age?
- 28:11Probably more, more mature than your dad.
- 28:13100%.
- 28:13All right, we're on Domer and Sons, Cal.
- 28:15Keep it together.
- 28:15Yeah, exactly.
- 28:17All right, let's do score predictions for Purdue.
- 28:20I don't know if you've had a chance to do any intel on Purdue, but they, Cal gave us a little debrief earlier.
- 28:27And they are very, very pass heavy with very little run game which seems like it'll be time to feast for the defensive line and for the secondary.
- 28:38So what do you think?
- 28:40What are you guys thinking?
- 28:41I'll let Steeler go first here.
- 28:43Yeah, after watching them last night and everything, uh, my score prediction's gonna be 52 to six.
- 28:50I think-, Notre Dame winning, obviously.
- 28:52I think, after the past couple of games, us coming out not being fully prepared and, like, taking forever to get started and, like, get the ball rolling, I think Marcus Freeman is just gonna, um, just hype up the team really well for the first, first half of the game.
- 29:06And, uh, we're just gonna come out and it's gonna be pound town.
- 29:10I love it.
- 29:11It's, uh is the six points, um, two field goals or a touchdown?
- 29:14What do you think?
- 29:15'Cause I don't know if you know this or not- Ooh Steeler, we stole their, kicker.
- 29:19Yeah.
- 29:19Oh, we didn't steal him.
- 29:20Like, he, he transferred legitimately, of course, but, you know.
- 29:23Of course.
- 29:24Of course.
- 29:25Touchdown, missed PAT.
- 29:26Pro- Two field goals probably two, probably two field goals, but I could see a missed PAT.
- 29:31Okay.
- 29:32Cool.
- 29:33All right.
- 29:34Steel Wool.
- 29:35You suck, Purdue.
- 29:36All right.
- 29:36Well, Purdue.
- 29:37Um, it's interesting that you called us into this on the bookends of Michigan State and Purdue, but also from 1997 to 1999.
- 29:45Purdue won two of three.
- 29:48We won in 1998 by one point- Oh my gosh off two Tony Driver picks.
- 29:53Um, so those are a little bit of nuggets of information I looked back up.
- 29:56Drew Brees was playing quarterback at Purdue at the time.
- 29:58I was gonna say, I bet that was a Hall of Fame quarterback back there that we just didn't know.
- 30:02Yeah.
- 30:03So, between Purdue and Michigan State, who we seemed to play almost every year back then, it wasn't pretty for the Irish.
- 30:08So definitely, uh, excited about the Michigan State win.
- 30:11And Purdue prediction, all right.
- 30:14Before I get into the Purdue prediction, I have a little bit of history nugget that I dug up.
- 30:191889, Purdue football played Wabash College.
- 30:23Wabash College is where my father went to school.
- 30:26Ah, no way.
- 30:27Not them, but he went to Wabash.
- 30:30And after the game, this is all related to how did Purdue become named the Boilermakers.
- 30:37But after that game, the, a lot of the, the press from Wabash was calling the Purdue players, here's some quotes,"A great big burly gang of corn huskers-" rangers, pumpkin shuckers-" rail splitters, blacksmith, cornfield sailors-" and foundry hands." Those cornfield sailors probably got you, got your interest piqued there, buddy.
- 31:03Oh, I had to, I had to bring this to the pod, for sure.
- 31:06So then they played two years later, 1891, and Purdue crushes Wabash 44 to nothing.
- 31:12And in the paper the next day from Wabash, the headline, quote,"Slaughters of the innocent.""Wabash snowed completely under by the burly Boilermakers from Purdue," and it's stuck ever since.
- 31:24Nice.
- 31:25So that's how they- That's a great history lesson.
- 31:27That's a good history lesson, yeah.
- 31:28A little Purdue history.
- 31:30So, watching, again, I haven't watched Purdue too closely, but seeing them play UCLA last night, looking at some of their, earlier game stats, Their defense looks porous.
- 31:39I think we are going to– I think we are gonna run this thing up and, I don't think it's gonna be close.
- 31:46I don't think it's gonna...
- 31:46I think Michigan State was well-coached and they came out playing very physical like Wisconsin.
- 31:50I don't see the same thing happening with Purdue.
- 31:53I have a prediction.
- 31:541988 we won 52 to seven the year we won the Natty.
- 31:58Um, I'm calling 56, 13.
- 32:01I think they get a little bit, a few points on the board, but, 56, 13's my call.
- 32:06Excellent.
- 32:07Excellent.
- 32:08Cal, what do you got?
- 32:10Two years ago with Riley Leonard and them, Notre Dame beat Purdue 66 to seven.
- 32:18That's my score prediction, 66 to seven.
- 32:2066 to seven.
- 32:22Yeah, I can see that.
- 32:23What about you, William?
- 32:24I got 56 to 17.
- 32:2756, 17?
- 32:29Yeah.
- 32:29Oh, wow.
- 32:30That was close Purdue's been scoring, Purdue's been scoring a lot- Yeah in their past few games.
- 32:35I think 33 to 38.
- 32:37First third.
- 32:37I don't think the teams they played that they're scoring on don't really have good defenses.
- 32:42Yeah.
- 32:43And so I think, because these guys are pass heavy and we probably don't need to put eight in the box to stop the run, we're gonna be able to do some damage on the defensive line and allow the secondary to do the work that they do.
- 32:58I don't see us giving up another 60 yard pass like we did yesterday to this offense, even though it might be a little bit more explosive.
- 33:07Gonna go 56 to three.
- 33:11Wow.
- 33:11There it is.
- 33:12There it is.
- 33:13Yeah.
- 33:13Yeah, I don't have much faith in Purdue.
- 33:15I think we- I think, maybe a pick six.
- 33:19Couple interceptions.
- 33:19Yeah, I, I feel one of those.
- 33:21Yeah.
- 33:22I just think three interceptions, six sacks.
- 33:25It's gonna be one of those days for Purdue.
- 33:27Purdue's gonna get Old Yeller-ed.
- 33:29Purdue's gonna go behind the boathouse.
- 33:34You gonna send Steel or Tony?
- 33:36Both.
- 33:40Nice.
- 33:40Nice.
- 33:41All right, gents.
- 33:42Well, hey, thanks for joining the pod.
- 33:44We really appreciate you coming on.
- 33:46Steeler, what a treat, man.
- 33:49Love having the- Yeah the next gen on here.
- 33:52Of course, yeah.
- 33:53Appreciate you for, inviting me on.
- 33:54Yeah, man, any t- any time, any time.
- 33:57We'll get you guys on later on in the season.
- 33:59And obviously we'll have to do a pod in Las Vegas when we're getting ready for the Natty.
- 34:03For our next segment, we're gonna play Starting 11.
- 34:08Two people agree on a player, which is gonna be Matthew and William, and one of us, which is gonna be me, is gonna try to figure it out who it is on the current two deep Notre Dame roster, and I have 11 questions to figure out who this player is.
- 34:25So let's get into it.
- 34:27All right, Calvin, go ahead Uh, is this player on defense?
- 34:34Yes.
- 34:35Okay.
- 34:38Is this player a backup?
- 34:42Depends Yeah, depends.
- 34:44They've started- Put it down they've started and they haven't started this year.
- 34:47Put it down.
- 34:50Okay.
- 34:51Is this player a sophomore or younger?
- 34:56No No Is this player in the secondary?
- 35:03No No.
- 35:05That's four Is this player a linebacker?
- 35:10No.
- 35:12Five Yes.
- 35:19Well done, man.
- 35:19Dad, no it's not.
- 35:21It is.
- 35:21It's Mukam.
- 35:24It's not.
- 35:25It's, it- that's who I pointed to.
- 35:27Oh, really?
- 35:27Yeah.
- 35:28Who'd you think I pointed to?
- 35:29Easy dubs.
- 35:30Easy dubs.
- 35:30Groves?
- 35:31No.
- 35:32That was Mukam.
- 35:34Yeah.
- 35:35Easy dubs.
- 35:35That's pretty impressive, Cal.
- 35:37Yeah.
- 35:37Dude, I- My bounce back can y'all give me my damn point?
- 35:39Yeah.
- 35:40Nope.
- 35:42So now the score is 1-1-0.
- 35:44William is still in a donut'cause he's- William, you'll have a chance next week to redeem yourself.
- 35:55It's gonna be great.
- 35:56Okay.
- 35:56Sure.
- 35:57All right.
- 35:58So, I'm so looking forward to it.
- 36:00All right.
- 36:00All right.
- 36:02Cal, well done, man.
- 36:04You got on the board for the season and in only six questions too.
- 36:07Super impressive.
- 36:09So making up for that goose egg from the last time.
- 36:12Well done.
- 36:13Well, that's it for this episode of Domer and Sons.
- 36:18We'll be back next week- Yep as we recap Purdue- Mm-hmm and look ahead to the University of North Carolina Tar Holes.
- 36:28The Tar Holes.
- 36:29Uh, and it's gonna be a family affair.
- 36:31I think we're gonna get your grandfather on the pod.
- 36:34Oh, yeah.
- 36:36That'd be great.
- 36:37Oh, I didn't mention this in the college one, but NC State.
- 36:40Ugh.
- 36:41Heartbreaker.
- 36:42All you gotta do is go down when it's three strikes- It's not even like a heartbreaker that game's a heartbreaker it's just like, what are we doing?
- 36:47Yeah.
- 36:48It's, it's completely CJ Bailey's fault.
- 36:50I feel bad for him.
- 36:51Don't feel bad for the guy.
- 36:52But- Yeah, for all of our listeners out there, if you don't know this already, our kinda second team is NC State.
- 36:59Elizabeth grew up in an NC State family and she has passed on her love for the Wolfpack into our house and as a result has also passed on extreme animosity to the University of North Carolina.
- 37:16So we will be bringing on North Carolina's probably biggest critic, the, the great reverend, Mr.- Rick Barger.
- 37:30Rick Barger.
- 37:31Mr.
- 37:31Barger, Bebe, as he's known in our house as well- Yep to chat about Carolina and offer up some game predictions there.
- 37:39Until then, You can find us at Instagram at domer_and_sons.
- 37:48You can also send us a question by email at our address domer.and.sons@gmail.com y'all have a great week, And go Irish.
