- 3:54about yourself? I am very much great you guys. It is a breath
- 4:00of fresh air to see a male author from South Carolina, African American male
- 4:09author. I think you might be my first, yeah, in my category,
- 4:15my first. So tip well, you can't tip your hat, but
- 4:17you can tip your head on a little of your glass. You're gonna make
- 4:19it do what it do. I am so honored, so honored, so
- 4:26or to be a part of your show, thank you so much, and
- 4:28being the first male offer on your show. So I'm very happy, Thank
- 4:31you, first male author from South Carolina. Y'all just don't understand, Okay,
- 4:42so let's dive on into this. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
- 4:48Absolutely, absolutely yes. I just celebrated my birthday a couple of weeks
- 4:54ago. Just turned thirty five, Sagittarius, he what's your birthday? December
- 5:02second? Oh wow, okay, we got we here, we all have
- 5:15wait, we are here, that's all. But yeah, again, I
- 5:26just turned thirty five. I grew up with a huge family, you know,
- 5:30from my mom and dad's side. I graduated to colleges. I went
- 5:34to try to Technical College back in twenty eleven get my associate Arts degree,
- 5:44and then I transferred to the College of Charleston Mijard and Theater. I graduated
- 5:49to twenty fifteen. I've been doing like performing, writing, doing some shows.
- 5:56I sing with the Plantation Singers. I'm here in the Low Country.
- 6:00So you probably heard my little callagis I love them Liberry so many times?
- 6:09Absolutely, I love them. They're like my second family. Like shout out
- 6:14to miss Lynette White, Toddy and White. Her mom is, yes,
- 6:18I love them, I love them all my heart. Check them out.
- 6:21A hoss chop offs on Sundays Yo is, yes, they do amazing gospel
- 6:30brunches. You know, it's all time high. So you have all of
- 6:39this artistic energy going on. How does where you live contribute to your energy
- 6:48as an artist? Oh my god, that is a good question as that
- 6:56one. But I don't know. Just be me. I guess I just
- 7:00use my personality, have fun, just be positive. Everybody loves my smile,
- 7:05Like I guess, my smile lights up the room, room, and
- 7:10you know one of my poems kind of aspire that. So I don't know.
- 7:13I'm just just be me. It gives me energy, That's what I'm
- 7:16talking about. So let's get into this book here. Color absolutely absolutely now
- 7:26what that means because I know it's an acrony. Can you break it down
- 7:30for us? Absolutely? Absolutely here it is guys, colors can overcome levels
- 7:38of real stages. It's the acronym. It's pretty much the rise, the
- 7:43fall and come back story of my life. You know, growing up dealing
- 7:47with different people in my life. It helped me for the better for worse.
- 7:53And then you know, in life we go through different colors and it's
- 7:55up to us to find who we are as people when we grew up.
- 8:00The inspiration behind colors it actually came from my favorite artists, Donald Rochard from
- 8:07group called Dandy King that p Diddy from making a band three formed back.
- 8:13I've heard it mm hm the late late two thousands. Don was one of
- 8:18the members and she did the same thing with her albums Golden Hard, Black
- 8:22Heart and Redemption. And she did the same thing when she went through in
- 8:26the industry, the rise of Fall, come back that she went through musically,
- 8:31and you know what she experienced in the industry, So I kind of
- 8:35made my own kind of rise, the fall and come back story you know,
- 8:37before, during COVID and after COVID. So okay, yeah, so
- 8:43that's kind of defined help. I just want to have people, you know,
- 8:48when they read they kind of get an idea of who I am as
- 8:52a person and as a poet, and you know, get the new meal
- 8:54better. So so that's where my inspiration comes. Okay, much from it.
- 9:01So you wrote this book during COVID, and I want to keep on
- 9:07saying this because I want y'all know we got talent. He in y'all in
- 9:09South Carolina. So you wrote this your book Colors during COVID. How did
- 9:18that? If you how did that help? Would you feel your book would
- 9:24have been different if you wrote it now? Hmm, absolutely absolutely. I
- 9:31think it would have been wrote a little differently now because like during COVID,
- 9:35I did what I was in an abusive relationship with you know, I'm probably
- 9:41of the LGBT community, so you know I've been dealing with you know,
- 9:43hurt and pain and you know, dealing with depression and you know, after
- 9:48the breakup. Instead of like bashing about on social media like everybody do,
- 9:52I kind of like put my hurt, my pain, my frustration, my
- 9:56stress in my poetry. That's like my my bible, just to get through.
- 10:03Okay, yeah, yeah, So I enjoy books like that. I
- 10:09enjoyed the books that show this is me then and here's me now. You
- 10:16know what I'm saying, It shows that that growth. I love books like
- 10:20that, and I usually recommend those to my teens because Lord knows, their
- 10:26little lives are just so difficult and they would not think to pick up a
- 10:33book that brings you from that betting flower to a full bloom. So I
- 10:39applaud you. Would there be anything in your book that you would change now?
- 10:46Absolutely not? I not. I kind of like what what the final
- 10:54product is? I wouldn't change it for anything that's good? That's good.
- 11:00See an author say, hey, you know what, I will change this
- 11:01system and that. But the fact that you're saying you won't change it,
- 11:05that means this is me, eyes wide open, you know, take it
- 11:11or leave it? So here I am bam. What route did you take?
- 11:18Did you go through a publishing company or did you so publish? Oh
- 11:24yeah, I went through Amazon KDP through them, and I went through it
- 11:30with my friend. She's another portum Fine Abby Durant. She's actually one of
- 11:35the editors from a book. So I'm like, you know what, I'm
- 11:37kind of new of publishing and I wanted to follow what she did, and
- 11:41she felt Amazon KTP was was great, so it kind of helped me and
- 11:46you know, put it out there. It was it was it was pretty
- 11:50easy, but you know that the process was, you know, it was
- 11:52a little challenging. But I'm just I just loved the jerb Oyeah great.
- 11:58Do you ever think about self publishing because I've seen people who use KDP and
- 12:05they love it. They have like a love hate relationship to it. So
- 12:11when you were deciding between KDP and self published, I guess my question would
- 12:18need to be what gave KDP that edge over the self published m That is
- 12:26a good question. I don't know. I kind of go on with my
- 12:35gut feeling, you know, I just I just went with how I feel
- 12:41inside, and I felt just Amazon KDP was the better choice because I never
- 12:46really did self publishing because you know, it was my first it's my first
- 12:50publication, so I would like to take the safe route first and then you
- 12:54know, if my next book I put out, maybe I might do self
- 12:58publishing, but now I just want to start, you know, starts a
- 13:01rookie, you know, start with publishing unpublished. That's absolutely fine to go
- 13:11with this way because you know, just your first book, this is your
- 13:13baby. You feel comfortable with it. So I think that was a great
- 13:18decision. Hey, make it do what it do. Absolutely absolutely, and
- 13:22it's been great so far. This cover art of yours, you know,
- 13:26you've got to tell me. I love the Oh my god, I knew
- 13:31you was going to going to discuss that. Oh, yes, I'm a
- 13:35reviewer. We look at everything. Yes, the accent colors and why that
- 13:46type. I mean it fits the book perfectly. Yes, How did you
- 13:52come up with that vision? Oh? Absolutely absolutely. Shout out to my
- 13:58graphic designer, mister Chris Kindle that created my graphics for the front and back.
- 14:03We actually kind of sit down and you know we discussed, you know,
- 14:07through a coffee you know, hanging out coffee, you know, on
- 14:09Saturday, and I told him I'm want to do something rise the fun to
- 14:13come back. I'm gonna do different colors, maybe a color that represents happiness
- 14:20with the yellow, black, with the darkness that we went through redemption with
- 14:26red, and I feel like, hmm, this would be a great idea
- 14:28to use some of my pictures, you know, on social media. And
- 14:33I told Chris, I'm like, you can choose any any photo of me
- 14:37and kind of you know, create the whole vision of it. And you
- 14:39know, he did that, and he did a fantastic the job. I
- 14:43wouldn't trade him for anything, Like he is a great graphic designer. Like
- 14:48he he executed like it just came from that. Yeah, so you're telling
- 14:54me the images that are on the cover of your books actually are you photos?
- 15:01Yes, my my actual photos from social media. Absolutely. Yes,
- 15:05it's crazy cool. I know, I know, Oh my god, that
- 15:13is awesome, you know. And I don't know how he did it that
- 15:16he just drew and outlined me like a silhouette basically, and these he a
- 15:24it was like lots of words, but he just executed like he just did
- 15:28his thing with this book cover. And I'm like, oh my god,
- 15:31this is it. This is it. Yes, you know, it's different,
- 15:33it's unusual. I I love it. I love it. So we're
- 15:46gonna take a break real quick because we got some commercials we gotta handle,
- 15:50but we will be back. You guys with mister Chris. But mister Chris,
- 15:54you we about to have fun, all right, all right, ready

- 17:40the questions anymore. So this is cool. So who would you say?
- 17:48Your book is your life? Now your life is about to be a movie.
- 17:53Who would play you for the first half of your book? Oh my
- 17:59god, Ah, there's so many actors lined up. Oh my god,
- 18:06let's do three. Okay, give me the best three? Enough? Can
- 18:11I see Penson? Okay? Okay? And why Taraji and y'all go see
- 18:17Color Purple. Absolutely I'm gonna. I'm gonna see it during Christmas. I'm
- 18:22absolutely check it out. I'm going to know is what are you going to?
- 18:26Oh, I'll be going to Myrtle Beach, you know, my Baylist
- 18:30Beach. You tell her how when you go up the Okay? Absolutely?
- 18:36Yeah, yeah, I want you Henson because you know, since she did
- 18:41Empire, like you know, she's been getting rolls off off the roof child
- 18:47like. She is an amazing actress. She's not an underdark no more.
- 18:52I feel like she killed it. She could do comedy, she could do
- 18:56like emotions, she could she could just you know, get in the character.
- 18:59I just love her versatility, like she is everything. You know.
- 19:04I feel like she can tap into each color like the first part, and
- 19:08she could just she just kills it like she's she's amazing. Okay, we
- 19:15have to because of her personality. Okay, who do we have next?
- 19:18We got okay, hmm, you know you know I love my ladies now,
- 19:26so I would say Angela Bassett. Angela Bassett is amazing. She's a
- 19:30legend. Oh my god, like she she played like she's matter of fact.
- 19:36I know we're not in black history. I know it's next year,
- 19:38but she is black history. The definition of black history is her. Yes.
- 19:42Yes, all the roles she played, Yes, from Rosa Parks to
- 19:48Michael Jackson Mama, to Tina Turner to she did the civil rights with Mary
- 19:55J. Blige, with I've got that movie called Well, Malcolm Malcolm X
- 19:59and Martin Luther King. She was one of the wives. Yes, Oh
- 20:03my god, I can't remember, but I remember. I know exactly right.
- 20:08I just felt like she's she is a historic. She is Oh.
- 20:14I was just been watching nine to one one yesterday rapping gifts. Okay,
- 20:19like I've seen the whole series. I'm up to dating current, but I
- 20:25just love it so much to the fact that I'm like, why am I
- 20:26stopping rapping? I know what's going to happen next. But you get so
- 20:32engulfed into her characters, like you bringing it okay, ye, Angela Beatson
- 20:41mm hmmm, chie p hereson, we got one more, one more now,
- 20:48this is what first started the book. We're gonna come from the later
- 20:52part of the book from the beginning of the book who love. Oh my
- 20:56god, I'm going to Tyler Perry. Typ Perry is coming in my head
- 21:02now, okay, hmmmm, so many actresses in my head. Oh he's
- 21:12just amazing, Like I love going to his place. Like you know what
- 21:17I will say, timbo man, he took it to the can. You
- 21:22took it to the can. You took it to the King because I felt
- 21:25the last part. Yes, because I felt the last part of my book.
- 21:29She then overcame. She fought through you know, the odds and being
- 21:33in pain, doing hurt, and I felt like her voice it's cleansing I
- 21:41have. We have no choice about to stop when you hear it starts singing
- 21:47take me to the King. I mean even the drunk man on the corner
- 21:51will stop because that song is just it seemed like she put everything to it,
- 21:57like I have no thing, that everything I have comes from you.
- 22:03So I'm gonna need to come see you real quick because I'm just I'm all
- 22:07over the place. I love that song. Me too, me too.
- 22:11I just love her voice. I wish I could sing like her. My
- 22:15god, I just love it. Oh my god, you need to go.
- 22:22Have you seen her in place like the top Perry plays I have.
- 22:26Every time I've tried to go to Tyler Perry play in Charleston, it's either
- 22:30I have to work or sold out, Like it doesn't make any sense.
- 22:36But I looked at them all on TV. Well, the last play I
- 22:41watched was the Medea Farewell Tour. Me and my best friend Toddy, and
- 22:45we went to Columbia, South Carolina at the Township Auditorium and I think they
- 22:48had like five shows. Yes, they didn't come to Charleston, didn't come
- 22:52to Charleston right right at that time, right, and I went on a
- 22:56Sunday, I went up there and came back home to chall the same thing.
- 23:00So it was worth it. It was worth it. It was it
- 23:03was worth it. Don't be honest when you go to the Tyler Perry media
- 23:07show, you better be on time, be in your seat, because did
- 23:11she the deal will call you out. Really just did that just for the
- 23:18the videos, but she really does it. She does that offscript, Like
- 23:21you know how Tyler Perry be going offscript like seven dirty. The show starts
- 23:26at seven dirty, You're supposed to be in your seat. I really thought
- 23:30that he was just doing that for you know the videos to you know,
- 23:36bring it. Oh wow, not the love, like like split that gumb
- 23:44out and then he'll he'll toss a box of tissue in the audience, split
- 23:47that gumb out. Oh I love it, I love it? Oh seven
- 23:55dirty seven dirty? I got another question, this one just what's up?
- 24:00Some people were talking about music in Tambala Man, mhmm. What song would
- 24:08be included on your book soundtrack? Oh? My god? You know what
- 24:17I would say, my favorite artist, Dollar Schard. I know, I
- 24:19love Faith. That's my favorite song. He never lost faith in me,
- 24:22dedicaated who never lost you know, encouragement in me, like believe in my
- 24:29dream, my goals, and ambitious in life. I would say the song
- 24:32called Voices, like we put a brave face on. We have a voice,
- 24:37and we use that for our superpower to grow bigger and better every day.
- 24:41You know. M So I like that. So speaking of songs,
- 24:47let's continue on that route. So you guys, he chose the song for
- 24:52his commercial and what was the title that one? Again? I know it
- 24:56was by missus Dawn Done. It was called faith or that okay? And
- 25:07I remember trying to find a song. It's like, oh, Ain't this
- 25:12the girl from Danny King who was sitting up there singing in the back of
- 25:15the car. That's right, that's right, that's her. I call her.
- 25:21I call her my inde version of Beyonce, like I love her to
- 25:25death. I went to see her live in Atlanta. She she give your
- 25:29money's worth like like her take us to be like thirty forty fifty dollars.
- 25:32But she will put on a show, she'll sing, sher dance, she
- 25:36will interact with the audience. She gives her all. That's what I'm talking
- 25:41about. So we're getting close to the end, and it's wanted to have
- 25:47you as my last hold. Now you could come back now we we always
- 25:52come back now, all right, all right, because I'm feeling a conversation.
- 25:55I just love it, like this is amazing, Like you know,
- 25:57I know we in the haughty spirit, being happy, being happy, being
- 26:02joveful. And you know you got your hat, I got my family.
- 26:07I know it's an artificial one. If you can see, I come out
- 26:11every year I do to have you back. Once I read your book.
- 26:18It's an honor to half you back because you're from my hometown, so you
- 26:22get that special privilege absolutely, absolutely, in fact, absolutely we can hang
- 26:27out have coffee, you know, because I love I love right right around
- 26:30from North Chouston High School. That's my old high school, by the way,
- 26:33so chart Academy of Technology. Don't you do that? Oh look,
- 26:40don't comfort me. We might not have a school no more. Oh my
- 26:49god. We should do that. Absolutely to see it, I can.
- 26:56We can ruin us a old place and we can do that. Absolutely.
- 26:59Weekness coming should check and you will have to do a verse. Now you
- 27:03want to have to do a verse in person? Absolutely, I'm ready.
- 27:07I can do one right now if you want, because I have you got
- 27:11one now? Yeah, I got a poem in my head. That's not
- 27:15my book, but I got I got my favorite poem that I can read
- 27:18if you want. It's story time everyone, and close us out our interview
- 27:30out with a point. Absolutely, we got to get your social media information.
- 27:34Absolutely, absolutely, I got you. Absolutely. It's kind of short.
- 27:37So this poem is dedicated to anyone that's in love through marriage, you

- 28:11or detours, because your heart leads me into the right direction. I get
- 28:18butterflies on my stomach just thinking about you, and it gives me all the
- 28:25joy to be me and it helps me to truly see. I don't ever
- 28:30want the string to end because it's love right here. It is endless.
- 28:36My heart is full, but I crave more of your loving personality and strength.
- 28:42I always wonder why isn't everyone like you? Because other people in my
- 28:48life they are untrue. Your love is like a boomerang that keeps coming back,
