Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: It is up to us to lace up, to get out,
- 0:03Speaker 1: and to take the lessons that we learn on the
- 0:05Speaker 1: run and integrate them in the other aspects of our lives.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Because when we do that, that's the point, right, that's
- 0:14Speaker 1: the good stuff. That is when we level up and
- 0:17Speaker 1: become better, more inspired, more excited versions of ourselves. Hey, everyone,
- 0:37Speaker 1: Emily a body here coming into your feed with another
- 0:40Speaker 1: episode for a run week.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Here on a hurdle.
- 0:44Speaker 1: So far this week you have already heard from Jess
- 0:48Speaker 1: Movald and Aisha prout Leir. We chatted about both the
- 0:53Speaker 1: long run, how to navigate it, how to master it,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and also how to deal with the crappy runs, the
- 0:59Speaker 1: runs where your head is just not in the game.
- 1:02Speaker 1: If you haven't listened to those episodes yet, if you're
- 1:04Speaker 1: getting a slow start to this post Memorial Day week,
- 1:08Speaker 1: not a problem. They are there and they are waiting
- 1:11Speaker 1: for you with open arms. Today on the show, I
- 1:14Speaker 1: am bringing you a personal narrative my biggest takeaways from
- 1:19Speaker 1: thirteen years of running, give or take and nine full marathons.
- 1:24Speaker 2: If you'll learn a lot over that period of time.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You learn a lot about what not to do, what
- 1:28Speaker 1: to do, what's important, what's not important. I cannot even
- 1:33Speaker 1: begin to describe or fully convey all of the goodness
- 1:38Speaker 1: that has come to my life because I decided to
- 1:42Speaker 1: believe that I was capable of running, of lacing up
- 1:47Speaker 1: and putting myself out there, going after the thing that
- 1:51Speaker 1: feels hard. So many days it has just it's changed
- 1:55Speaker 1: my life. It's what I said in the intro. The
- 1:58Speaker 1: last couple of days, running has changed my life. And
- 2:01Speaker 1: so if you need a little inspiration to get out
- 2:03Speaker 1: the door, or if you're just a little curious about
- 2:06Speaker 1: me and my story, well that is what this episode
- 2:10Speaker 1: is for.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Today.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I'm going to talk to you a little bit about
- 2:12Speaker 1: my journey and then offer you these tips and tricks.
- 2:16Speaker 1: I'm going to keep this intro short today, but please,
- 2:19Speaker 1: I can't ask this enough. Tag and share this week
- 2:23Speaker 1: of content these podcasts as you are listening to them
- 2:27Speaker 1: on social media, specifically on Instagram, Send them to a friend,
- 2:31Speaker 1: share them. I want this to be overwhelming me in
- 2:36Speaker 1: my feed. There is no such thing as overwhelming me
- 2:39Speaker 1: in my feed. Fun fact, today, this episode is coming
- 2:43Speaker 1: out on Global Running Day. I highly encourage all of
- 2:46Speaker 1: you to lace up to get out. And it also
- 2:49Speaker 1: happens to be my birthday today. So if you're up,
- 2:52Speaker 1: if you're out, if you are getting after it, I
- 2:55Speaker 1: want to be tagged by you.
- 2:56Speaker 2: I want to be inspired by you.
- 2:58Speaker 1: You all give me the mon motivation on the regular
- 3:01Speaker 1: to get up and out myself. So tag me, share
- 3:04Speaker 1: this all the things over at Hurdle Podcast again and
- 3:08Speaker 1: I am over at Emily a body with that. Let's
- 3:11Speaker 1: get to hurdling. If you were to tell me thirteen
- 3:21Speaker 1: ish years ago that I would be a five day
- 3:25Speaker 1: a week runner, there is no way in hell that
- 3:29Speaker 1: I ever would have believed you. I distinctly remember the
- 3:33Speaker 1: run where I went out in my grandmother's neighborhood at
- 3:38Speaker 1: the time, she was living in plain View, and I
- 3:40Speaker 1: had some music playing. I think I was using my
- 3:42Speaker 1: Lime Green iPod shuffle at the time, and I ran
- 3:47Speaker 1: for a mile and it didn't necessarily feel hard, and
- 3:51Speaker 1: I was just so mystified that this thing that I
- 3:54Speaker 1: thought that I was absolutely no good at not that
- 3:57Speaker 1: long before that moment, was suddenly in my wheelhouse. This
- 4:02Speaker 1: came shortly after an entire summer where I was in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the middle of my weight loss journey, and I've talked
- 4:09Speaker 1: about this many many times on the show before. But
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was going into my junior year of college. I
- 4:15Speaker 1: had recently lost about thirty five pounds, give or take,
- 4:18Speaker 1: and I wanted to keep up with my fitness. I
- 4:21Speaker 1: was working at a summer camp at the time, and
- 4:23Speaker 1: so I decided that in order to keep up with
- 4:25Speaker 1: my fitness, I was going to have to start to
- 4:27Speaker 1: like running. I was going to have to start running
- 4:29Speaker 1: because they didn't have access to like the Planet Fitness
- 4:32Speaker 1: or my school gym that I had been using before
- 4:34Speaker 1: I arrived at this camp for this job as a
- 4:37Speaker 1: programming director, and so that summer changed my life because
- 4:40Speaker 1: I learned to love running. I learned to stop making
- 4:44Speaker 1: excuses and just try the thing, and I had so
- 4:47Speaker 1: much compassion and so much grace with myself. I'm going
- 4:50Speaker 1: to link to the episode in the show notes where
- 4:52Speaker 1: I talk about this in depth.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Make sure to check that out.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But basically, the moral of the story is that I
- 4:58Speaker 1: ran a half mile every day for the entire summer.
- 5:01Speaker 1: At the time, I thought it was a full mile,
- 5:03Speaker 1: only to find out at the end of the summer
- 5:05Speaker 1: that it was a half and that half a mile
- 5:07Speaker 1: took me fourteen minutes.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Fourteen minutes.
- 5:10Speaker 1: If I in that time had been in the place
- 5:13Speaker 1: where I was so busy comparing myself to everybody else,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I would have felt as though that was quote unquote
- 5:17Speaker 1: too slow or not good enough or whatever. But for
- 5:20Speaker 1: some reason, a magical reason, I was just so elated
- 5:24Speaker 1: that I did it, that I committed to this thing
- 5:27Speaker 1: that made me feel good. I was so focused on
- 5:30Speaker 1: how I felt that I stopped worrying about what it
- 5:34Speaker 1: could look like or if it was quote unquote good enough.
- 5:39Speaker 1: That summer, as I said, it changed everything. And so
- 5:43Speaker 1: the thirteen years that followed, that girl from that summer
- 5:47Speaker 1: never would have guessed that she would become a three
- 5:51Speaker 1: twenty three fifty six marathon her, never in her wildest dreams.
- 5:58Speaker 1: And that is one hundred percent who I think about
- 6:01Speaker 1: that girl. Every single time I finish a race, a run, whatever,
- 6:08Speaker 1: I have a moment where I'm like, wow, I am
- 6:12Speaker 1: so blessed that I started. So okay, a little bit
- 6:16Speaker 1: of a ran. To kick us off here, I'm going
- 6:18Speaker 1: to talk you through my biggest takeaways after thirteen years
- 6:21Speaker 1: of running in nine marathons. First thing first kind of
- 6:25Speaker 1: hinted at that just now nothing happens overnight. Absolutely nothing.
- 6:29Speaker 1: I told you I was running fourteen minute half miles
- 6:33Speaker 1: and now my fastest mile is I think it's five
- 6:37Speaker 1: fifty six, just a single at five fifty six. She
- 6:40Speaker 1: never dreamed that she would be able to do that.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But that time, that pr took thirteen years. It took
- 6:49Speaker 1: a sense of unwavering self belief. It took a lot
- 6:53Speaker 1: of training and learning and asking and not being afraid
- 6:57Speaker 1: to put myself out there. It also took a lot
- 7:00Speaker 1: of crappy runs, again, which I talked about with Aisha
- 7:04Speaker 1: on the show yesterday. You don't just show up to
- 7:07Speaker 1: the starting line of a marathon and crush a marathon
- 7:10Speaker 1: without doing any training. That does not happen overnight. That
- 7:15Speaker 1: takes a lot of dedicated time and effort and learning.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And so just like becoming a better runner and getting
- 7:24Speaker 1: to a point where running mayfield quote unquote easier, that's
- 7:27Speaker 1: something you're going to have to work on, and that's okay.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Everyone works on their own thing. I want you to
- 7:35Speaker 1: be able to focus on your own journey. Understand that
- 7:39Speaker 1: the journey is where the beauty is. Yes race day
- 7:43Speaker 1: is fun and exciting, and it's something that will always
- 7:46Speaker 1: be remembered. But the journey is why you train for
- 7:49Speaker 1: the marathon, right. The journey is where the lessons are.
- 7:52Speaker 1: The journey is where the opportunity is. So if you
- 7:57Speaker 1: are not paying attention and just check things off your
- 8:00Speaker 1: to do list and show up to the race with
- 8:02Speaker 1: all this expectation for it to be the thing that
- 8:05Speaker 1: blows your mind and changes you for absolutely ever, then
- 8:07Speaker 1: you're kind of missing a point. You owe it to
- 8:10Speaker 1: yourself to pay attention, to learn the lessons, to sit
- 8:15Speaker 1: with the feelings that come hand in hand with showing
- 8:18Speaker 1: up and putting in the work, and be proud of yourself.
- 8:21Speaker 1: You know, in running, we set these goals and going
- 8:25Speaker 1: after the goal that's the important part.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Of course.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yes it's great to say something like I have a
- 8:29Speaker 1: five fifty six mile PR, but that didn't happen overnight,
- 8:34Speaker 1: and the journey is what was the most rewarding part.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Next takeaway from thirteen years of running nine marathons, invest
- 8:42Speaker 1: in your gear. When I started running regularly, I probably
- 8:46Speaker 1: owned twelve different pairs of black cotton leggings from Target
- 8:49Speaker 1: and that's what I would run in. Anna Haines White
- 8:51Speaker 1: V Neck Many Haines White V necks, and with time,
- 8:56Speaker 1: as I ran more, I learned that that was going
- 8:59Speaker 1: to be uncomfortab and that when you wear a cotton
- 9:01Speaker 1: shirt and cotton gets wet, it stays wet, and that
- 9:04Speaker 1: is just not ideal because depending on what time of year,
- 9:08Speaker 1: you could either be in this heavy cotton shirt that
- 9:10Speaker 1: is not breathable and really awful in the summer, or
- 9:13Speaker 1: you could be really cold because again it gets wet
- 9:15Speaker 1: and it stays wet, and if it's in the winter,
- 9:17Speaker 1: that's a no boy. Now, anyway, investing in your gear,
- 9:21Speaker 1: that price tag, that sticker shock is going to be
- 9:23Speaker 1: a tough pill to swallow right off the bat, but
- 9:26Speaker 1: you will never regret getting technical clothing that can help
- 9:29Speaker 1: you on your run. I would recommend having three or
- 9:33Speaker 1: four go tos of shorts or tights, a sports bra
- 9:38Speaker 1: if you're a woman, a tank top or a long sleeve,
- 9:41Speaker 1: and at least two to three pairs of sneakers. I know, again,
- 9:45Speaker 1: sticker shock. I'm putting a lot of things into the
- 9:47Speaker 1: universe here that will help you train better, but they'll
- 9:50Speaker 1: also help you stave off injury, be more comfortable, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: when you feel good, you run better. The science proves it.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Don't just take my word for it. I have wrapped
- 10:01Speaker 1: a lot about my go to gear picks a lot,
- 10:04Speaker 1: a lot, a lot in the weekly Hurdle newsletter. Make
- 10:07Speaker 1: sure you're subscribed to that. I'm going to put the
- 10:08Speaker 1: link in the show notes so that you can get
- 10:11Speaker 1: my suggestions for everything from sports bras and hats to sneakers, tights, shirts,
- 10:17Speaker 1: all the things. Taking a break from today's episode to
- 10:28Speaker 1: give some love to my sponsor at Tracksmith. Tracksmith is
- 10:31Speaker 1: a Boston based performance running brand dedicated to the community, style,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and culture of running.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Putting on my Tracksmith gear makes me feel sleek.
- 10:40Speaker 1: It makes me feel fast and fit, and that may
- 10:44Speaker 1: sound a little silly, but even the science shows that
- 10:47Speaker 1: when you feel good, you perform better. On top of
- 10:51Speaker 1: just feeling good about my gear, I feel really amped
- 10:53Speaker 1: about this partnership because it's unlike anyone that I've done before.
- 10:57Speaker 1: The company is offering to donate fun five percent of
- 11:00Speaker 1: every purchase using the code Hurdle back to Girls on
- 11:04Speaker 1: the Run to help drive change. You'll also get free
- 11:07Speaker 1: shipping on your order as well. Now y'all know that
- 11:10Speaker 1: one of my mottos, one of the phrases that I
- 11:13Speaker 1: live my life by is do good and this partnership
- 11:17Speaker 1: just couldn't be more of a perfect fit for me.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Now I chose Girls on the Run. I really love
- 11:22Speaker 1: what they are all about. Running helped me so much,
- 11:25Speaker 1: come into my own find independence, become confident at such
- 11:29Speaker 1: a critical time in my life, and I can only
- 11:31Speaker 1: imagine what it would have been like to learn in
- 11:33Speaker 1: some of these lessons a little bit earlier on. Girls
- 11:36Speaker 1: on the Run is all about integrating movement as a
- 11:39Speaker 1: tool to strengthen a sense of confidence in young girls
- 11:42Speaker 1: while fostering care and compassion for self and others, and
- 11:46Speaker 1: that is my jam. Be sure to check out Tracksmith's
- 11:49Speaker 1: new summer collection featuring styles for training and racing and
- 11:52Speaker 1: hot weather. My go to's at the moment, the allstin bra,
- 11:56Speaker 1: the Twilight Crop top. Trust me, you will never go back,
- 12:00Speaker 1: and don't sleep on cruise socks. The right socks will
- 12:04Speaker 1: dramatically better your run. Do some good today. Head on

- 12:18Speaker 1: Use code hurdle today to get free shipping and support
- 12:21Speaker 1: girls on the run. My next biggest takeaway don't be
- 12:33Speaker 1: afraid to run with other people. I have lived in
- 12:36Speaker 1: New York for ten years now, and it wasn't until
- 12:39Speaker 1: probably the last three or so years that I open
- 12:43Speaker 1: myself up to the greater running community. I don't have
- 12:46Speaker 1: a lot of regrets in my life, and I know
- 12:48Speaker 1: I learned a lot of lessons running on my own
- 12:50Speaker 1: for all of that time.
- 12:52Speaker 2: But man, like this is borderline.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I really wish that I did it sooner, and I
- 12:56Speaker 1: wish that I did it sooner because running with other
- 12:58Speaker 1: people it does two things. One, it gives you an
- 13:01Speaker 1: opportunity to make friends, which is so great, but it
- 13:05Speaker 1: also gives you a sense of excitement and competition. Me
- 13:09Speaker 1: running with other people was so motivating in such a
- 13:13Speaker 1: big factor to the gains and the wins that I
- 13:16Speaker 1: have had over the last three years as I've immersed
- 13:20Speaker 1: myself in this culture. And I didn't do it for
- 13:23Speaker 1: so long for the same reason that maybe you haven't
- 13:25Speaker 1: done it or are scared to do it. It's because
- 13:27Speaker 1: I was scared to quote unquote again not be good enough.
- 13:31Speaker 1: I want you to remember you decide your own self worth.
- 13:36Speaker 1: It is called self worth, it is not called group worth.
- 13:39Speaker 1: You are the person that gets to show up and
- 13:42Speaker 1: be your best self. And if you're running with the
- 13:45Speaker 1: right people, no one's going to make you feel lesser
- 13:48Speaker 1: than because you are showing up and putting in your best.
- 13:52Speaker 1: So I encourage you to put yourself out there. It's
- 13:55Speaker 1: something that Knox and I are going to be talking
- 13:58Speaker 1: about on Friday when we get into a discussion about
- 14:00Speaker 1: run crews, run culture, and how to link up with
- 14:03Speaker 1: a group or create a group in your local area.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It's getting to a place where, yes, it might be
- 14:08Speaker 1: a little uncomfortable to start surrounding yourself with other people,
- 14:12Speaker 1: but once you do, you certainly will not regret it.
- 14:15Speaker 1: And I don't mean this to say that you need
- 14:17Speaker 1: to join like a huge run crew or a run group. No,
- 14:20Speaker 1: you could just start running with a friend or a
- 14:23Speaker 1: few friends or a family member. Make sure you set
- 14:26Speaker 1: a reasonable expectation so that you're all on the same
- 14:29Speaker 1: page for what the effort is going to be, and
- 14:31Speaker 1: go out there and have a good time and catch
- 14:33Speaker 1: up and swap stories. And you may just realize, but
- 14:37Speaker 1: I've realized that you shouldn't have waited so long to
- 14:39Speaker 1: get into it. My next lesson, Skipping one run in
- 14:44Speaker 1: a training plan won't ruin you, even if it's a
- 14:47Speaker 1: long run. I would be remiss if I didn't say
- 14:50Speaker 1: that I like. I love a good training plan. I
- 14:53Speaker 1: love following directions. I love not having to think about
- 14:56Speaker 1: the thing that I'm supposed to do. I love instructions.
- 14:59Speaker 1: Can you tell that I'm type A. Here's the deal, though,
- 15:03Speaker 1: Sometimes you got to listen to your body, and sometimes
- 15:05Speaker 1: you got to listen to your heart. And there are
- 15:07Speaker 1: going to be days where maybe you're not feeling right,
- 15:10Speaker 1: you're just not into it. You need to do something
- 15:14Speaker 1: else that goes on in your life, like go to
- 15:17Speaker 1: a wedding or a baby shower, or see your parents,
- 15:20Speaker 1: or catch up with a friend, or just take a self.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Care day, and that's okay.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Do not guilt yourself over the fact that you've got
- 15:29Speaker 1: to do you sometimes. Yes, running is important, and yes
- 15:35Speaker 1: it involves a lot of opportunity, costs a lot of
- 15:37Speaker 1: the time, but remember you've got to live your life
- 15:41Speaker 1: as well. Missing that one run again, it's not going
- 15:45Speaker 1: to ruin all of the successes that you've already had
- 15:48Speaker 1: or the progress that you've made, depending on where you
- 15:50Speaker 1: are in your own journey. Remember that every single day
- 15:54Speaker 1: when you get up, you have an opportunity to start again.
- 15:57Speaker 1: So I say that also kind of on the vibe
- 16:00Speaker 1: that there are going to be ebbs and flows and
- 16:03Speaker 1: you're running, Especially for someone like me who has been
- 16:06Speaker 1: doing this for over a decade now, they are going
- 16:09Speaker 1: to be maybe strings of bad runs and strings of
- 16:12Speaker 1: good runs. And that's okay. Everybody, even the pros, they
- 16:17Speaker 1: have good and bad days. You owe it to yourself
- 16:21Speaker 1: to commit for the long term. You owe it to
- 16:24Speaker 1: yourself to remember, yes, that you can start every day.
- 16:27Speaker 1: Every day is a chance for a new beginning, and
- 16:30Speaker 1: every day you can invest in yourself to get one
- 16:32Speaker 1: step farther than you were before. And lastly, here today,
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm going to throw out this one. You learn more
- 16:39Speaker 1: from the bad runs than the good ones. I'm not
- 16:42Speaker 1: going to say that I don't appreciate things like my
- 16:46Speaker 1: stellar virtual in New York Marathon last year, or the
- 16:50Speaker 1: unbelievable time I had in Chicago in twenty nineteen. Think,
- 16:54Speaker 1: but when I think about the lessons that I've learned
- 16:57Speaker 1: on the run over the last thirteen years. The biggest
- 17:01Speaker 1: ones are from the days where nothing went according to plan.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I think about the ten k that I ran two
- 17:08Speaker 1: weeks ago and how I went into that so dehydrated,
- 17:11Speaker 1: so not prioritizing things, and what I learned from that
- 17:15Speaker 1: day that didn't go as I had hoped. That I
- 17:17Speaker 1: was getting down on myself in the moment. For by
- 17:20Speaker 1: in retrospect, I'm so grateful that it happened right. I
- 17:24Speaker 1: think about that hard first marathon in Hartford in twenty thirteen,
- 17:29Speaker 1: and how I didn't know what I was capable of
- 17:32Speaker 1: until I showed up that day and I put in
- 17:34Speaker 1: the effort and that God unlocked a can of worms
- 17:37Speaker 1: for the rest of my life. I think about the
- 17:40Speaker 1: hard as hell fastest mile that I ran last summer
- 17:44Speaker 1: and the pain involved in that, and what I learned
- 17:46Speaker 1: from pushing myself to that level, to that maximum potential,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and how I wanted to give up and the wheezing
- 17:53Speaker 1: was starting. But really what happened in that moment was
- 17:55Speaker 1: that I learned that I could probably do more. I
- 17:59Speaker 1: think about the boss In marathon, where it rained and
- 18:02Speaker 1: hailed and there were like thirty mile an hour headwinds
- 18:05Speaker 1: coming straight at my face, and I kept going because
- 18:08Speaker 1: I knew that I didn't come that far to only
- 18:11Speaker 1: come that far. I didn't come that far not to finish.
- 18:16Speaker 1: It is so awesome what happens when you believe in yourself,
- 18:19Speaker 1: when you're willing to jump the hurdles, when you're willing
- 18:22Speaker 1: to go after your big potential. And that is the
- 18:25Speaker 1: biggest takeaway that I have learned from running, is that
- 18:28Speaker 1: we have to believe in ourselves. We have to be
- 18:32Speaker 1: our own biggest hype men and women. It is up
- 18:36Speaker 1: to us to lace up, to get out and to
- 18:40Speaker 1: take the lessons that we learn on the run and
- 18:42Speaker 1: integrate them in the.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Other aspects of our lives.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Because when we do that, that's the point, right, That's
