- 0:00Well, welcome to this week's That Car Show.
- 0:02We're back with a crew show. It was it was good to see you
- 0:06guys with Steve last week. Before we get started, I thought
- 0:10I'd give you a cultural reference.
- 0:12I know this week we're not being categorized as a cultural car
- 0:14show, but I was watching the movie Hook.
- 0:19Have you guys seen the movie Hook?
- 0:21So it's been so long. I saw your note in the prep like
- 0:24in the show notes and I'm I have a guest but I was so excited
- 0:28when I saw. Your little I couldn't believe
- 0:30it. So Hook was, I think his early
- 0:3390s movie with Steven Spielberg and Robin Williams.
- 0:36And it's the story of what happens after Peter Pan.
- 0:40So Peter Pan does grow up. He has a family.
- 0:43Anyway, halfway through the movie, he he basically moves to
- 0:48London to an accept an award with his family and he's got two
- 0:51kids And to keep his kids safe at night, he hands his son a
- 0:56pocket watch. And I couldn't believe it when I
- 0:59looked at the branding on the pocket watch because it was a.
- 1:03Sheffield. It was a Sheffield Watch.
- 1:05Get out. Get.
- 1:07Out. So I wonder, I wonder if Jay
- 1:11knows this. We'll have to tell.
- 1:13It's never come up as far as I know.
- 1:16I mean, that's pretty damn cool. Especially because the movie was
- 1:20long enough ago. Like, I watched it.
- 1:23I mean, I saw it in the theaters.
- 1:24Not to, you know, age myself. I saw it in the theaters.
- 1:27But at that point, that's not something I was aware of.
- 1:29But I love looking back on that stuff and you're like, OK,
- 1:31again, the threads were there the whole time.
- 1:35Yep. Crazy.
- 1:36We all know pocket watches are coming back.
- 1:38I was going to say I'm like wait, which brand just did this
- 1:41pocket watch? It's just like a semi weird deep
- 1:44cut and it's like, is it who just did the pocket watch?
- 1:49It was watched people. Didn't they Swatch?
- 1:51Swatch did a collaboration with Aldermar PK.
- 1:55Yeah, yeah. So I'm like, I know it wasn't a
- 1:58neon pocket watch. Yeah, so anyway, watch the movie
- 2:02or just check out that scene. But it's pretty cool and a shout
- 2:05out to Jay and everyone at Sheffield.
- 2:07That's amazing Hook had great taste.
- 2:09Yeah, well, it was Robin Williams.
- 2:11It was Peter Pan. Had good taste.
- 2:13Yeah, if you remember the film, Hook hated clocks, so he had all
- 2:17the clocks. Smashed up because the crocodile
- 2:19ate his hand, right? Or or he ate his hand and then
- 2:22he fed him a clock or yeah, I can hear him coming.
- 2:25They turned the crocodile into a clock in the movie.
- 2:28Let's. Anyway, let's talk about cars,
- 2:29shall we? It's just a bit more.
- 2:31Of a crazy idea. Object Lindsay, it sounds like
- 2:34you are overdosing on press cars right now.
- 2:39I am, well, I think you put it. Very.
- 2:41You put it very aptly last week and said that I'm our very own
- 2:44clerks, in which, as I told you, that's a comparison I will
- 2:47always gladly accept. Yes, I found myself with two
- 2:53press cards in hand and a third potential on Friday alone.
- 2:57And so I just kept hearing you in my head and hearing like
- 2:59Clarkson. And I was like, if there's ever
- 3:03a metric of you've arrived, you've made it.
- 3:05This is it. When you've got press cards
- 3:06coming out your ears like Hallelujah.
- 3:09So I spent last week and I gave it back on Friday with a 2026
- 3:14Toyota Land Cruiser and then swapped that out on Friday for a
- 3:18Lucid Air Touring. And then just so that I could
- 3:23give everyone the my full attention, the car that was also
- 3:27potentially coming on Friday will be coming next week.
- 3:29So stay tuned to see what I'm picking up next week.
- 3:34But in the meantime, I mean, I've just been having the best
- 3:37time. And Ryan, I think you drove a
- 3:38Land Cruiser. Have you experienced 1 yet?
- 3:40Yeah. I've driven a couple of them and
- 3:42I've also driven the Lexus sibling.
- 3:44Oh, you have. OK, so that is on my list.
- 3:47Now that I've experienced the Land Cruiser, I'm like, all
- 3:50right, I want to drive the GX so that I can compare.
- 3:53Yep. I mean, I don't have a bad word
- 3:56to say about the Land Cruiser. It was a universal favorite with
- 3:58everyone in my house. We had the chance to get
- 4:02together with family and took them for a drive in it.
- 4:04So I took three adults and two kids at one point comfortably.
- 4:07The one that I had didn't have the third seat in it, but that's
- 4:11obviously an option. So you can seat up to seven,
- 4:13depending on how you option it. Yeah.
- 4:15I mean, it was just infinitely usable.
- 4:17Like, I can't. It was like every time I got in
- 4:19it and started to drive away, I'm like, it's just so usable.
- 4:23And I don't know what you thought, Ryan.
- 4:25Like if that was your sort of take away.
- 4:28Well, I liked it a lot more than the new 4 runner for the things
- 4:31I do with the car, right. And I guess if you're a hardcore
- 4:35off roader, yeah, you go and you get that 4 runner Trail Hunter
- 4:38or whatever it is, but. Just day to.
- 4:40Day the the the land crews are far superior, far superior and
- 4:45yeah, wait to drive the Lexus because that's that's got the
- 4:48six cylinder and that really just kind of makes it perfect,
- 4:52right. I feel like that probably tips
- 4:53it over the edge. Yeah.
- 4:55I mean, I just like, I just kept marveling too, because it's a
- 4:58tall vehicle, but that's very similar to my truck.
- 5:01And so I felt very at home. It was like, oh, I really do
- 5:06like feel most at home in a taller, you know, big SUV,
- 5:09something like that. So I sort of like I felt more
- 5:13comfortable right away. I think just cuz I'm used to the
- 5:16truck, it was incredibly easy to park, which a lot of people
- 5:20might find surprising given the size.
- 5:21But just like the steering is so precise and especially with all
- 5:26the cameras and the tech, I felt like I never had a blind spot.
- 5:29It was complete visibility, complete confidence, super
- 5:32precise steering, an incredibly comfortable ride for an SUV with
- 5:36big tires on it that's set up to go off road.
- 5:40One thing my daughter and I kept talking about was how
- 5:43comfortable it was going over speed bumps like, and it was
- 5:46there was no vagueness. So it really is a testament to
- 5:50the engineering because you felt the speed bump, but there was no
- 5:54vagueness. But it was 100% comfortable.
- 5:56It was like very elevated feedback because you knew there
- 5:59was constant feedback from the road, but it never took away
- 6:02from the driving experience. But I still felt like I was
- 6:05completely aware of what was going on, but very comfortable.
- 6:10What are these competing against?
- 6:12Like what's your alternatives? Defender.
- 6:15Yeah, Defender, the Expedition, I would think because it's you
- 6:21can get a third row like anything with a third row.
- 6:25They I mean the Sequoia is a different version that also
- 6:29comes with the 3rd row, but that's another Toyota product.
- 6:32I would guess they not the Nissan Armada because that's
- 6:37probably more in line with the Sequoia, but I think like the
- 6:41Telluride, that's another third row.
- 6:46But you know. What?
- 6:48Well, the new Telluride is a little different.
- 6:51I spent some time in one. We can get to this later with
- 6:53the Armac driving day and I far prefer the Land Cruiser.
- 7:00Yeah. And I think I would just feel
- 7:02much, much more comfortable off road in that versus, yeah,
- 7:06versus the the Kia. To me the the leaders in that
- 7:09class are the Defender in that, you know, and I don't care if
- 7:13it's not a real Land Cruiser, it's just a really great all
- 7:16around car vehicle I should say. Well, that was, I hadn't
- 7:20realized that they, they discontinued the Land Cruiser in
- 7:232021 and then obviously it's known as the Land Cruiser Prado
- 7:27outside the US and so they brought that here.
- 7:31You can still get that old one as the Lexus, of course.
- 7:33Yeah, I think that's why I didn't realize that Toyota had
- 7:37discontinued it. So that was interesting to
- 7:40learn, you know, when I had this one when I was doing my
- 7:43research. But yeah, like you said, Ryan,
- 7:46you definitely hear the engine because it's a 4 cylinder turbo
- 7:49hybrid. You definitely hear the engine
- 7:52working, but it's super responsive.
- 7:53We never lacked for power. So I kept thinking like, yeah,
- 7:56you hear it. So it just depends on what you
- 7:59drive. You want your driving
- 8:00experience. To be and the hybrid goes a long
- 8:02way in filling in that gap between, you know, hitting the
- 8:05accelerator and then feeling the power right.
- 8:07It really smooths things out. Yeah, it's, it's, you know, I
- 8:11don't know what the price point is exactly on that.
- 8:13I think it probably comes in a little cheaper than a a
- 8:15comparable defender, but of course you get, you know, a
- 8:18wider range of of drivetrain options in the defender, right?
- 8:23Yeah, I think it depends. The one that I had was priced at
- 8:2770, but again, that one didn't have the 3rd row did have a
- 8:31sunroof, which was lovely. You know, all the creature
- 8:35comforts. It had heated seats, didn't have
- 8:37a heated steering wheel, but that's not standard.
- 8:38You know, that's more of a surprise when you do have a car
- 8:41with that. Right, right.
- 8:44I, I think, and I don't know what color the one was that you
- 8:48drove rent. I had the tan with the white top
- 8:51and what was so funny, it's like a it's like a burnt sand color.
- 8:54And it's not a color I would typically pick, like to start
- 8:57off. But it definitely grew on all of
- 9:00us as the week went on. And like, at one point, my
- 9:02daughter and I had gone to a park and I glanced over and the
- 9:05car was like, you know, a little distance away.
- 9:07And I went like, wow, it's really good looking.
- 9:09And so it's kind of like, yeah. And like, when you see it, I was
- 9:13like, OK, so when you see it in its natural environment, like
- 9:15outside, you know, this wasn't like far off the beaten track,
- 9:19but it looked, it's sort of gelled.
- 9:23And what was fascinating was how much attention the car
- 9:25attracted. And part of that was the color.
- 9:28Like, we'd be sitting in it a few times.
- 9:30We sat in it and ate lunch, you know, when we're out and about
- 9:33and people would be walking by and we'd hear them go, wow, I
- 9:35really like that. Is it there?
- 9:36I really like that color. Look at this.
- 9:39What is this? Yeah.
- 9:41So back to the FJ Cruiser too, right, With that 2 tone.
- 9:44And I think they went from a combination that was very
- 9:46similar to that. That's a car all these years
- 9:48later, what is it? 25 years or whatever?
- 9:50Hard to believe things still looks fresh, still looks like a
- 9:53concept car. Check my numbers.
- 9:55It probably hasn't been 25 years, but but those still look
- 10:00good. And I think this will be that
- 10:01car. Couple decades down the row.
- 10:03I think it's really time. Yeah, this is like, well, and
- 10:05it's kind of like, if you look at it that way, like this is the
- 10:08natural progression from the FJ. It's like the Expedition was the
- 10:11natural progression from the Bronco.
- 10:13The Bronco was a 2 door, 5 seater SUV.
- 10:16The FJ is a 2 door 5 seater. The Expedition, they added two
- 10:20doors. Same thing with the Prado and
- 10:22the Land Cruiser gives you 2 more doors.
- 10:24So it's even that much more usable.
- 10:26But yeah, I mean it's like, and there was no driver fatigue.
- 10:30Like I took it on long drives and just, it was just
- 10:33delightful. And it's truly capable off road,
- 10:36but you give up very little around town, which is really
- 10:40kind of the sweet spot for most of us, I think so.
- 10:42Yeah, and they dropped it off. It was nearly full with gas.
- 10:45I drove it for the week like I didn't, you know, I'm like, if I
- 10:48need to fill it up, I need to fill it up.
- 10:50I didn't stop my usual, you know, activities and got to the
- 10:55end of the week and still had a little bit of gas left.
- 10:57So it's like while you were seeing it drop, it wasn't
- 10:59precipitous. Like it was very usable.
- 11:03But yeah, it was definitely tough to hand the keys back to
- 11:06that one. And I could absolutely have that
- 11:09as a daily, Yeah. Yeah, I could absolutely see you
- 11:11in that, right. Yeah, it was funny.
- 11:14I was like this. It definitely like we all felt
- 11:16very at home in it, which is, you know, that doesn't always
- 11:19happen. How do you decide between that
- 11:20and the defender then? I think you'd have to drive them
- 11:25back-to-back. It's just a matter of like the
- 11:28Land Cruisers, more utilitarian, the defenders going to have more
- 11:31creature comforts. I think the defender I felt had
- 11:33a little more capability off road, right, just a little bit
- 11:37more of a of an envelope performance envelope.
- 11:39And I know Defenders have come a long way reliability wise, but I
- 11:43haven't heard anything about a Land Cruiser.
- 11:45And you know, from as far as I can tell, they're, they seem to
- 11:48be bulletproof. To reliability.
- 11:51I mean, I I think that would be a big part of anybody, any
- 11:54equation is reliability. They both seem to hold their
- 11:58value quite well, so I don't know who has the edge there,
- 12:00but. Yeah, Is the dealer experience
- 12:03come into it at all now? Obviously I had a very shit
- 12:06dealer experience with the the Land Rover down the road in LA,
- 12:10but I also had a pretty poor experience with Toyota in
- 12:13Seattle when I had my GR Corolla.
- 12:16Oh. That's right.
- 12:16That's right. They charge for a, you know, a
- 12:19courtesy car, for example. So does that come into it at all
- 12:22in terms of, you know, the dealer experience or does that
- 12:25not really even equate? I to me, at this point in my
- 12:31life, that is not going to sway my ultimate decision.
- 12:35It's definitely something I might think about, but I think
- 12:39like, let's say there's a brand that's not known for great
- 12:41dealer experience, but I love the car and I think it'd be a
- 12:44great fit for. You call him Old Star, shall we?
- 12:46Right. Yeah, No, I mean, I think he
- 12:50just kind of like, you know, going in depending on what who
- 12:55it is or or where you have to go that you're like, it's not going
- 12:58to be fantastic, but I love the car and like day-to-day it's
- 13:00going to be great. Yeah, yeah.
- 13:03You know, Dan, I when I think of Land Rover dealer, I still, you
- 13:06know, envision the Land Rover dealer of the 90s and the early
- 13:10plots with the, you know, I don't know why they got rid of
- 13:13this, but the test track out. I know I was just thinking the.
- 13:16Front and it's like, come on, that's that's I want that back.
- 13:20That's for. Contact.
- 13:21Anymore I just, you know, I don't even know.
- 13:23I mean, if are they stand alone? Guys, I drove past a Jaguar
- 13:27dealership the other day. Talk about bleak.
- 13:32A story. For another another time.
- 13:34But they had like 2 cars. It was, it was really kind of
- 13:38sad, really. Kind of stuff.
- 13:41Yeah, so Land Rovers, you know, got a lot of pressure on them
- 13:46right now and I don't know what the dealer experience is, but
- 13:52that's right. That's, hey, I had a Wrangler
- 13:55for a day last week and forgotten how much I loved it.
- 13:58Also a car that you'd owned, Dan.
- 14:00Yeah, did you get the death wobble?
- 14:03No, I tried. I I think they've.
- 14:06Been quite his best effort. You dialed that out.
- 14:08Yeah, but which one did you have?
- 14:11You know, this was just a a base, you know, car, but black
- 14:15on black with a hard top. I got a lot of looks in this car
- 14:17though, you know, again, kind of unexpected.
- 14:19Don't get a yeah, get nearly a look in in a GT4.
- 14:23But this thing, you know, guys, girls, I mean, this is a good
- 14:25looking thing. I think it was in the the triple
- 14:27black, you know, kind of kind of look and it just I don't know.
- 14:32Yeah, it was it was bigger than I expected a Wrangler and of
- 14:34course this was the four door. I think they've grown a bit.
- 14:37But but yeah, but then again, you know, at the end of the day,
- 14:41what am I buying? Probably buying that Toyota,
- 14:43hate to say so. Yeah.
- 14:46Well, you have to consider, you know, you do have a family and
- 14:49like that obviously plays a huge part in what's going to work
- 14:52day-to-day. Yeah.
- 14:55It's funny, I was doing some research the other week around
- 14:58Touro businesses. OK.
- 15:01And AI and you kind of give AI some questions, our research
- 15:06department and the perfect Touro car is a Wrangler if you're, if
- 15:12you're in a place of like tourism.
- 15:14So Seattle would work, I guess that would work.
- 15:17Obviously LA would work, but the ROI on the Wranglers?
- 15:22Yep. Is up there in terms of great
- 15:25tour cuts. Makes so much sense and I think
- 15:29it'd be hard to get into trouble in one, right?
- 15:32You don't have to worry. You know, they're tough, right?
- 15:34You don't have to worry about covering the wheel.
- 15:36You don't have to worry about, you know, speed bumps, potholes,
- 15:39so much I think makes a lot of sense, right?
- 15:42A few Dings and scratches. I mean, don't really.
- 15:44That's character. Harsh the vibe, right?
- 15:47So yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm a fan. I you know, you know what you're
- 15:50getting with the Wrangler, right?
- 15:51Right. You know exactly what you're
- 15:53getting and each successive, you know, addition's a little nicer
- 15:57than the one before it, right? It's a great single car solution
- 16:02for a lot of people I think, but.
- 16:05Yeah, especially because of the sort of modularity like the fact
- 16:08that you can take off the roof or the doors or whatever and
- 16:11turn it into like a beach mobile, but you can go off
- 16:13roading and. You can get a manual.
- 16:15Yeah, get a manual and you can put everything back on and it's
- 16:18a an enclosed car. Yeah, I liked your rear Wrangler
- 16:22in the time you had it. Yeah, Dad.
- 16:24That's I, I loved it. It was, yeah.
- 16:26It wasn't a quick car. I went from quick Audis to, you
- 16:29know, to that. And it just, it was utilitarian,
- 16:33you know, it, it gave experiences that I slept in that
- 16:37car many times. Have you had a car you haven't
- 16:42slept in? It could be.
- 16:44That the monster. I worked that one out.
- 16:48But yeah, I mean they're just, you know it.
- 16:50But it leads on to the like now you've got an alternative, which
- 16:54is the Bronco, right? And I think 2 weeks ago we
- 16:57talked about the Filson Bronco. I mean, Lindsay, you pro that up
- 17:01and they've materialized. I know.
- 17:04And we were talking about it I think at the end of or beginning
- 17:07of last week. And they're beautiful.
- 17:10Like they just look stunning. I mean, you put it very well and
- 17:14it's like, yeah, I think it's a defender, contender rhyme.
- 17:19Unintended, but I'll take it. We're, we're a damn Oracle
- 17:22around here. I feel like we're predicting
- 17:23things left and right. And you know, I like that very
- 17:27much. It's a handsome thing for me.
- 17:29I can't get past sort of the chopped visibility, right?
- 17:32The the chopped lookout of a Bronco.
- 17:35The Wrangler doesn't have that. The Wrangler's all, all glass
- 17:37and it's, it's, it's really quite, quite nice.
- 17:40I'm sure you get used to anything.
- 17:42And I, I do think the Bronco looks a little cooler, right?
- 17:45But to me that's that's a consideration in city traffic
- 17:49and. So you'd go Jeep over Bronco?
- 17:54Or Defender over Bronco over Filson.
- 17:56Bronco, I think is what he's saying.
- 17:58Yeah, yeah. If I could get a soft top V-82
- 18:01door defender, yeah, that'd be that'd be the one for me.
- 18:04But alas, we can't. So I don't know.
- 18:07I don't have to. I'd have to drive the Bronco
- 18:09again. It's been a while, so.
- 18:10Yeah, the the Bronco has better Rd. manners I think than the G.
- 18:13It does OK. OK, so that's the that's what
- 18:16you're paying for, you know, because it's it's taken the best
- 18:19of what the Wrangler was and then they brought it out, right?
- 18:22It's but this new, this new Filson edition looks interesting
- 18:26because it's going to have the the engine from the the Raptor,
- 18:30but reduced. So it's almost gunning for
- 18:34gunning for the the Land Rover, so.
- 18:38Reduced is in like more genteel. Is that sort of the you know?
- 18:43I think so. So less horsepower, like less
- 18:45highly revved, right, But but you're getting a like a a better
- 18:49engine than the two point. Seven.
- 18:51Maybe that's the one then. Maybe that that checks off the
- 18:54most boxes. Maybe that's your next card in.
- 18:56That's yeah. Maybe, although I've been
- 18:59looking at Rivians today. You.
- 19:01Know how about that are they just dropped the price?
- 19:04Did you see this? Yeah, right now we're talking
- 19:06right. Like who does that?
- 19:08Who? Who does that?
- 19:11Yeah, I can see. You in that's.
- 19:15Which model are you looking at? So the they've just released the
- 19:19R2 is that one that's that's getting mixed up with the
- 19:22numbers. Why can't why can't they make it
- 19:23very easy? But but like it's, you know, the
- 19:28premium edition is just under 60K.
- 19:31Yeah. You're getting good, good
- 19:33electric coverage. You're getting, you know, a
- 19:36brand that is focused on outdoor and fun.
- 19:38And so yeah, I need to test for everyone, I think.
- 19:43What's the range on that? 4:30 I think for.
- 19:46The top one wrap, I mean that's that's.
- 19:48That's fantastic. And over 600 plus.
- 19:51Powered cars, yeah. Right.
- 19:53But they do, they will be a cheaper one than the one that's
- 19:55been reduced. OK, we'll have less mileage,
- 19:58but. Yeah.
- 20:00Anything over 300, though, sign me up.
- 20:02I mean, that's, yeah. It turns out these aren't the
- 20:04droids we're looking for. Jeez.
- 20:06Well, sorry, I speak to droids. I watched this.
- 20:10I don't know what's what what moved me to click on this last
- 20:13night, but it's the original Westworld movie from 1973 and I.
- 20:18Never saw. Yes, exactly.
- 20:20So you've seen it, right? And isn't Steve McQueen in it?
- 20:27You're gonna. Ask our research department.
- 20:30Yeah, I thought it was. We'll, we'll, yeah, I, I was
- 20:35drinking, but that's probably what moved me to watch it.
- 20:37But I, one of the things I thought was fascinating was, you
- 20:40know, again, this is 1973. It's older than me, right?
- 20:455 minutes into the movie there. So the, the premise is you can
- 20:49take a, you can take a vacation to one of these three worlds,
- 20:52right? One of them is this West world,
- 20:54this Western world, and basically you can live in this
- 20:57time period. But I I had to laugh because, or
- 21:00laugh or cringe or, or just that was interesting that, you know,
- 21:04they asked the question. Well, how do you tell the, the,
- 21:05the humans from the, the robots, you know, the, the real from the
- 21:08fake? And the response was, well, you
- 21:10look at their hands. They haven't quite figured out
- 21:12the hands yet. This is 1970.
- 21:16Yeah. Isn't that wild?
- 21:19He was in. He was.
- 21:20In the Magnificent 7, I think with your printer and they
- 21:23didn't get on but. Oh, OK, All right, I'm glad it
- 21:26wasn't Steve McQueen because I would have lost at least half my
- 21:29My Car Guy card if that had been him and I didn't recognize him.
- 21:33But fun, fun watch. And yeah, really prescient, I
- 21:37guess. So you went on an intensive?
- 21:41Yeah. Day of testing, is that right?
- 21:43Yeah, intensive is right. So they got, I don't know, 2530
- 21:46of us car journalists here. Who's they Like this is Rocky
- 21:50Mountain Automotive Press, which is much like the the, the was it
- 21:54the whopper? What's the, the whopper with the
- 21:58PNW? Yeah.
- 21:59Northwest Automotive Press Association.
- 22:01Yep. This is the R map.
- 22:03And I've yet to think of a fast food analogy, but yeah, so they
- 22:06get a big group of us together and then, you know, most of the
- 22:09manufacturers, the OEMs are there and they bring a bunch of
- 22:12cars. So like I said, probably a
- 22:14couple dozen of us, at least that many cars didn't have time
- 22:18to drive everything. But basically you, you take one
- 22:20out and you spend half an hour, 45 minutes with it and come back
- 22:24and hop into something else. And it was it was fun because
- 22:29McLaren has been there in the past.
- 22:31McLaren wasn't there this year. Nothing too exotic.
- 22:33You know, it's, it's, but it's the working day stuff, right?
- 22:35It's the people, you know, it's the stuff that that we actually
- 22:37buy. So Kia Stalantis, several Jeeps,
- 22:42there was a Honda and Toyota and and and Lexus and Genesis and
- 22:48and all this. And I, as I mentioned on the on
- 22:51the last episode with Steve, I was absolutely blown away by one
- 22:54car. And that's the, the Acura
- 22:56Integra. They had an A spec which is the,
- 22:59the lower horsepower, sort of the middle of the road, 200
- 23:01horsepower, one of the best manual transmissions I've ever
- 23:04driven. I think it's probably
- 23:06effectively the same transmission that's in the, the,
- 23:10the type R and they do offer, I think it's the type S and the
- 23:12Acura, which is I think basically the same car as as the
- 23:15Civic Type RI. The car was just sublime.
- 23:18I may buy one. They're that good $44,000.
- 23:21I haven't driven a car like that in years.
- 23:24It's what we, you know, we think of Honda as being but but
- 23:27better, right? They've they've advanced and
- 23:29just a wonderful, wonderful thing.
- 23:30Not the quickest thing in the world, a 200 horsepower, but
- 23:34just the lightest, sweetest, you know, clutch and and and and
- 23:37shifter and, and it's just inherently, you know, good.
- 23:42That was my favorite, my absolute favorite.
- 23:44But the other car that really that people really loved was the
- 23:48new Prelude. And I think that was probably my
- 23:50number 2. I don't know if either one of
- 23:52you have driven the new Prelude. It's gotten some grief because
- 23:56it's expensive. It's not super powerful, but
- 23:58what a what a wonderful little thing that is.
- 24:01Again, about 200 horsepower. I don't know it it it felt like
- 24:05APDK transmission. I don't know what the
- 24:07transmission actually is and I meant to look that up before we
- 24:09got on it looks like an LPNA 110 from many angles right and
- 24:15they're relatively new. This was in this beautiful blue
- 24:17color, almost a Mexico blue and you know from a Porsche world
- 24:20got all the looks people people just spun their heads around to
- 24:24see this thing because I haven't seen a ton of them on the road
- 24:28and especially in this color. It looked really, really good.
- 24:31I don't know who this car is for necessarily.
- 24:34It's kind of like who was the like the Honda Del Sol for or
- 24:37the CRX, right? I mean it, it fits in that in
- 24:40that sort of category, maybe a a young single professional or
- 24:43something who wants something that's fun but also practical.
- 24:46What a delightful thing to drive.
- 24:48For me, the Integra was just that much sweeter with the
- 24:50manual, but that was the favorite for a lot of people.
- 24:54I I was really impressed with the Subaru, the new Subaru EV
- 25:00called the trail Seeker. Yeah, the trail seeker, the 2026
- 25:05Subaru Trail Seeker, I think it's about 380 horsepower full
- 25:09EV. It's kind of like if you had an
- 25:12Outback that was an EV, the, the ride was incredible.
- 25:16Roads so much better than the either the Outback or the
- 25:18Forester that they had on hand. And you know, obviously you
- 25:22don't have to worry about CBD transmission.
- 25:25Ride was great. The size was right, but the one
- 25:28thing that cursed the damn car, and this is something that was
- 25:31in at least a third of the cars. There was the squirkle steering
- 25:36wheel and I just so you can, it's the squared off circle and
- 25:40then the Subaru's, the the trail seekers case.
- 25:43It was this tiny little thing, almost yoke like, and you just
- 25:46felt kind of goofy using it. But the car was wonderful.
- 25:50Yeah, it looks homely, whatever, you know, it's, it's a lot of
- 25:52hard plastics and that kind of thing.
- 25:53But it was one of the best driving cars of the day.
- 25:56I was really, really impressed. And I think that's also around
- 26:0044,000. But you can spend $6000 more,
- 26:03Dan, you can get the Lexus ES500, which is a full EV and
- 26:07it's like a Rolls Royce. It's fantastic.
- 26:10Those are my takeaways. I wonder if you're the wrong
- 26:13demographic for that Subaru because you know a lot of the
- 26:17Outbacks and the cross tracks traditionally would like the
- 26:20college cars, right? The kids, the cars the kids had.
- 26:24So maybe they want that sort of steering wheel in their cars and
- 26:26it's it's. Yeah.
- 26:28Yeah. They want to feel like they've
- 26:30got a Tesla Plaid. So Ryan, did they have?
- 26:34So at Mudfest we had one of the trail seekers and then we had
- 26:38one of the Uncharteds, which is the other new EV.
- 26:41Did you guys have one of those? No, didn't have the uncharted.
- 26:43Is that the smaller one? Yeah, it's slightly smaller.
- 26:47It's it's more of a it's not a hatchback, but it's kind of like
- 26:52an X6 silhouette, like swoop, you know, swooping, sloping
- 26:56roof, not wagon esque. It was fantastic.
- 27:03But I thought I thought the trail seer was really fun and
- 27:07capable. But yeah, the steering wheel, by
- 27:10the second day, I was used to it.
- 27:11Yeah, first day. And it wasn't the only one.
- 27:14There were several, but, and I think especially when you're
- 27:16going back and forth, you notice it even more.
- 27:19Because that's. You're going from the thing, you
- 27:21know, that's the thing you don't know.
- 27:22And then back and forth. Yeah.
- 27:24And this was all on pavement. We didn't do any off roading.
- 27:26So maybe I'd have a different, you know, opinion if I took this
- 27:29thing off road. But it just looked a little out
- 27:31of place. It looked a little small, like
- 27:32A7 7th, 8th, 7 eighth scale, you know, wheel with a bigger.
- 27:36Car How? Funny.
- 27:36Doesn't look nearly as silly though, as the Charger 4 door
- 27:40that also has a, a steering wheel like that, but is has
- 27:43about 200% of the the visual weight of the Subaru.
- 27:48And I just a bunch of the cars had it.
- 27:50I don't get it. Some were better than others,
- 27:53but the one in the Subaru just looked like looked funny.
- 27:56It just didn't look like it fit. And but I, I thought the car
- 27:59drove well. It rode well, had good power,
- 28:02you know, 380 horsepower. So it was, you know, as quick
- 28:05as, as anything, all the power you'd you'd want.
- 28:09It was. Really fun driving stuff
- 28:11back-to-back to back-to-back. Yeah, poor Stalantis.
- 28:15Stalantis, if I may. Everyone loved the Pacifica so.
- 28:20Oh, you guys had an Angelus? Angelus.
- 28:23Highway, I guess knows what he's talking about and interestingly
- 28:27this one had been used in the I forget the name of the rally.
- 28:31So the woman who's the current president of our map, Sarah
- 28:34Lacy, had done is the Trinity the.
- 28:36Trinity Rally, Yes, you had the one that she drove.
- 28:39This was the exact same same one.
- 28:42I didn't actually get to drive it because I was trying to drive
- 28:45all the fun stuff. Doing everything.
- 28:47Else when everyone said this is great, it's got like 290
- 28:50horsepower It it drives wonderfully, like they would
- 28:53take it over many of the other cars.
- 28:55I was. That was a surprise of the day
- 28:58for sure. Not the first time we've heard
- 29:00that, though. Please go to our episode of
- 29:02Angela's Death Highway. And it Even so, it's interesting
- 29:05because it even looks kind of cool now, unless you get the
- 29:08base model like the rental fleet and that still looks like the
- 29:10old one. The others have all been
- 29:12facelifted. But it was, you know, that was
- 29:14universally more loved than the new Cherokee, which I think most
- 29:18of us were kind of disappointed with.
- 29:20Well, it's got a one point. 5. Liter 4 cylinder turbo just
- 29:24didn't do anything for me so. Well, and I mean, you make a
- 29:28good point, because I think people are predisposed to like
- 29:31the Cherokee and to have the Pacifica come in and just blow
- 29:35everybody out of the water and be like, hey, I'm here and I'm
- 29:38fantastic. Yeah, yeah, I think about the
- 29:41same price too. I could be wrong, but yeah, the
- 29:44the new Cherokee, it just was under engine.
- 29:46It felt heavy. It just, it just wasn't the car
- 29:49for me. It's probably the right car for
- 29:51a lot of folks. It's just not the right car for
- 29:53me. Trying to think of any other
- 29:55surprises. Interesting.
- 29:57I think the Trinity Rally was happening while I was at Mudfest
- 29:59because I was talking to the Stalantis guys who were there
- 30:04and they were really excited and they they've worked with Sarah
- 30:08over the years. I think they were excited to
- 30:10have the car on the rally. Well, Sarah's awesome, she's
- 30:13great, and and apparently the Pacifica was too.
- 30:16But you know, you just don't get to drive everything and and that
- 30:19was something I didn't get to drive but.
- 30:21So how many cars were there? Couple dozen at least.
- 30:25And you know, again, it ran the gamut, drove the new Kia
- 30:28Telluride, which again, I think it's probably a very good car
- 30:32for a lot of people. It's a very different vehicle
- 30:33from the the Cherokee and I think a better vehicle, a bigger
- 30:37vehicle, but. Yeah, because that can be A7
- 30:39seater. Yes, yes, yeah.
- 30:41The thing was massive pleasant, you know, It just didn't, didn't
- 30:46get me, didn't get your. Engine going.
- 30:48Yeah, You know, nothing was terrible, right?
- 30:52That's the thing, Nothing's terrible anymore.
- 30:54Some are just really, really good.
- 30:55And once you drive one of those, it's, you know, pretty easy to
- 31:00forget the others, so. I was impressed because they had
- 31:03their, they had a Telluride at Mudfest and it did fantastic off
- 31:08road, you know, and you just never know.
- 31:10Interesting. Yeah.
- 31:11Because a lot of those, you know, that 90 or 99% of them are
- 31:15going to be used for ferrying children around on city streets.
- 31:18And so you never know when you're going to take it off
- 31:20road. I mean, another thing, like with
- 31:23the Trail Seeker, it did fantastic off road, which is
- 31:27what you'd expect from Subaru, but you don't necessarily know
- 31:29how the EV is going to do. And yeah, that and the Uncharted
- 31:33both did amazingly off road. In that Telluride was actually
- 31:36pretty great in the twisties. I took it out out on a twisty
- 31:39Rd. with their buddy Jason Meschnik, who you both know, you
- 31:43know, we, we heard, we got the tires to make some noise and the
- 31:47brakes to, to make some smell. And it was very predictable.
- 31:51I mean, it's not a car to ever choose for the twisties, but it
- 31:53really it was it was better than it had any right to be.
- 31:58You know, you think you drive one wonderful car.
- 32:00So like with the Integra from Acura, I mean, best car of the
- 32:03day in my opinion. But the other car they had there
- 32:05was the Acura ADX, which is their small crossover SUV.
- 32:09And I hated it. I hated it.
- 32:12CBT transmission board. Or it.
- 32:14Was just a very different vehicle and it just, it just, it
- 32:20felt sloppy. It was everything that the that
- 32:22the Integra wasn't. It was perfectly fine, but it
- 32:25wasn't, you know, you know, wasn't all that much better than
- 32:28the Cherokee right in, in in my eyes, just really disappointed
- 32:33in that. And the other thing that I was
- 32:35disappointed in is a lot of these cars had high end audio
- 32:38brand sound systems. So the Jeep Grand Cherokee,
- 32:42which is an interesting one, really beautiful interior, has a
- 32:47Macintosh stereo, but unfortunately it didn't sound
- 32:50like any Macintosh stereo that I'd ever I'd ever heard.
- 32:54It's the new Macintosh, It sounds the same.
- 32:56That's that's right. It's it's same thing for the the
- 32:59MDX head. I'm sorry, the ADX, the Acura
- 33:02had a bang and Wolfson system suffered from the same issues
- 33:06that, you know, bang and Wolfson systems do and and and other
- 33:09brands like Genesis, right, where instead of simple bass and
- 33:12treble controls, you've got this bio sound circle that you're you
- 33:15can never get the sound quite right.
- 33:17Meanwhile, the Integra had a I'm going to have to check the check
- 33:22the brand again. It wasn't ADS, but it was
- 33:23another brand and it was exceptional, right?
- 33:26So same same manufacturer, same same OEM, and yet you know, the
- 33:31one car's exceptional on the other.
- 33:32I would have put way down on my list.
- 33:34So it's interesting. I wonder if it's something to do
- 33:37with sharing platforms because I don't know whether the ADX is
- 33:40shared across the Honda range or obviously the Integra.
- 33:45Is is shared with the Civic, isn't it?
- 33:48Yeah, I'm wondering if the ADX is the same as is, is it the
- 33:52HRV, the really small Honda crossover?
- 33:56Because it didn't I I think it was betrayed by its
- 33:59underpinnings, honestly. It just.
- 34:01It just was not. There's the episode title,
- 34:04Betrayed by our Underpinnings. Every day.
- 34:08Every day. Every day.
- 34:10You gotta feel sorry for accurate, haven't you?
- 34:12Because like what, what are they as a car company?
- 34:15Because they produce 2 SUV's and then they produce this
- 34:19fantastic, you know, 4 door sedan and you know, they're not
- 34:25really competing with Lexus, are they?
- 34:26Because. No, they've really gone two
- 34:28different directions, right? And and I would take that that
- 34:31Integra over the Lexus any day. But it's, you know, for an
- 34:34appliance, an electric, you know, just conveyance that Lexus
- 34:37was hard to beat. But as A1 car does it all, you
- 34:41know, engaging car that that Integra was just fantastic.
- 34:45I implore everyone listening to go out and and and drive a new
- 34:49Acura. And I haven't driven the the
- 34:51type S and that may be even, you know, that much better.
- 34:53But I thought that this this a spec was really the sweet spot.
- 34:57200 horsepower was not a lot in 2026.
- 34:59Zero to 60. I think in this thing's like 7.3
- 35:01seconds at sea level, but it feels faster.
- 35:04And when you get in a car like that, that, you know, screw the,
- 35:08you know, the performance numbers, it's just so engaging.
- 35:11It's just so sweet to drive. And then like I said on the last
- 35:14show, you forget that they still make cars like this.
- 35:17It was just exceptionally, exceptionally good.
- 35:19And they, I hope they keep making it because it's the best
- 35:22thing I've driven in a long, long time.
- 35:24So yeah. So is it a viable replacement
- 35:27for the pole *? I don't think so, only because
- 35:29it's front wheel drive only and being here in Colorado,
- 35:33all-wheel drive is really, really nice.
- 35:35But. Guess who's moving to California
- 35:37so he can go to my favorite car? I think it would be the perfect
- 35:40car for someone with a commute right who still wants to take it
- 35:43up in the canyons. Again, it's not the fastest
- 35:45thing in the world, but it I I bet it would keep up with a lot
- 35:48of a lot more powerful stuff in the canyons just because the
- 35:51drive and dynamics are so exceptional.
- 35:53Yeah, no, they they could I I had the S for about I guess a
- 35:59week and did about 600 miles in one.
- 36:03Oh, wow. And it was the official Long
- 36:06Beach pace car. So what are the?
- 36:10Gold ones. Yeah, but it's such an engaging
- 36:14Dr. The you want the Civic for the seats, but you want the full
- 36:19experience. You want the the Integra.
- 36:21Yeah. Good car.
- 36:24I love that we were just cruising around in the gold one.
- 36:26That's. That's right with the flashing.
- 36:27Visual, yeah. That's way cooler than what I
- 36:29drew. Yeah, I mean, we were stuck in
- 36:32traffic a few times. I was just like, still there.
- 36:34Let's put the lights on. That's.
- 36:36Right. All these strobe lights on the
- 36:38roof. The only thing is it had he'd
- 36:40only done like over 1000 miles, but he had done 1000 track
- 36:43miles. So the brakes were so squeaky.
- 36:47Yeah. It's like they're track breaks
- 36:49everyone. They're supposed to sound that
- 36:50way. Yeah, I was.
- 36:51I was told by Jake and Acura that if I want to take this car
- 36:54for a week I should do it before Pikes Peak because once the hill
- 36:58climb comes to town then all the Acuras in the local fleet are
- 37:01are given out as as courtesy vehicles.
- 37:05And yeah, I I bet those brakes will be squeaking too by the end
- 37:08of that. Week What are you waiting for?
- 37:10Get on him. Wonderful car.
- 37:13When is Pikes Peak? I don't know exactly, but I did
- 37:17make it. Up.
- 37:18For what they call tire testing day.
- 37:21Which I think. This was great.
- 37:23I think tire testing, I don't know if it, I think it's a
- 37:25practice day. I think it's like, you know,
- 37:27carburetion day, right? It's kind of a term that's, you
- 37:30know, maybe just a term anymore, but it's a practice day.
- 37:34It's the first day for these guys to go out and you can
- 37:36practice either the lower section or the upper section,
- 37:38but not both. And the reason they do that is
- 37:40then they have people practicing on both sections.
- 37:42And we got up, It was our our buddy Brendan Garth's 40th
- 37:46birthday. And so I was very honored that
- 37:49he invited me and a handful of other people, including Jake
- 37:52from Shift Colorado and also our buddies John and Louis Deisty
- 37:57take it up way too early. And I So I got all of 10 minutes
- 38:02of sleep before I had to get up at 1 and drive up to Arvada, Co
- 38:06to meet Dan is a. Dan, it sounds.
- 38:09Like he got two more hours of sleep than when you were with.
- 38:12Him, yeah. Did you forget the camera there?
- 38:15You guys got more I think. Yeah, I roll up to Brendan's
- 38:18house and of course it's dark. I've never been on the street.
- 38:21I knew right away which house is Brendan's because he's got a
- 38:24four car garage, but parked outside were a Hyundai Santa
- 38:29Cruz, that little pickup truck, his Kia EV9 electric and then
- 38:35his papaya orange McLaren. Those are the cars that are
- 38:38outside because inside he's got some sort of Viper, a DeLorean,
- 38:44and then two or quattros. So it's like.
- 38:47Just in case you need to go back in time.
- 38:49I found it but we had such a 40. Isn't he?
- 38:53I know well CPA, he knows how to work the numbers right.
- 38:57I just. But we had so much fun.
- 38:59We drove down, we drove like a bat out of hell down to Colorado
- 39:02Springs, got on the mountain by 3:30, met up with the Dicedies.
- 39:06There's a terrible video of me and and Jake from the magazine
- 39:11sleeping in the car. Every time he.
- 39:16Said Jake. I'd just hear from State Farm in
- 39:18my. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:20Apologies to Jake from not State Farm, but.
- 39:23Yeah, this is Jake from Shift Colorado.
- 39:26But we had so much fun and and I don't know, another Motorsports
- 39:29event that you can get access like that where we were just up
- 39:33on the mountain crew, right. But you know, we were right
- 39:36there in the middle of it that that electric vehicle thing that
- 39:39Ford reskins every year and runs was there and it just it, it
- 39:44fires up like a turbine engine and it just, it just goes puff
- 39:47of smoke and then it's halfway up the mountain.
- 39:48It was incredible. And we've even had breakfast
- 39:51with a couple of the drivers after.
- 39:53It's super casual, You know, it's, it's, it's, it's a pretty
- 39:56special event. Pikes Peak.
- 39:58It's, it's, it's, there's really nothing else like it.
- 40:00And it's, you know, that's on the world class stage like that.
- 40:03It's it's a pretty cool experience and it was a fun, fun
- 40:06morning, although I'm tired for the next three days, so.
- 40:11Any sign of what? I did not see him, no.
- 40:15He may have been on the lower, the lower half.
- 40:17We were on the upper half, but. Well, you saw him on your other
- 40:20adventure though, didn't you? Just organically.
- 40:23Yeah, I don't know if I talked about that.
- 40:24We went to Aspen a couple weeks back.
- 40:27A couple buddies shout out Eric Boehner and one of his buddies.
- 40:31Eric's got a Spider Rs. His buddy was in a supercharged
- 40:34Corvette C8. And we had a lot of fun driving
- 40:38to Aspen and back. All the wonderful passes, the
- 40:40roads that are in that area, McClure Pass, Independence Pass,
- 40:43this kind of thing. Couple of the highlights were
- 40:46yes, seeing Jeff Aswart and what appeared to be a singer from a
- 40:49distance, and then also being seated across from John Oates
- 40:52from Hall and Oates at a steakhouse we went to for
- 40:55dinner. That's fantastic.
- 40:57It's like, but you didn't have to go.
- 41:00That's right, we had such a good time.
- 41:02It, it's one thing to drive the the roads near home, right?
- 41:05It's another to to get out and drive the best roads your state
- 41:08has to offer. And and you know, fortunately,
- 41:10at least here in Colorado, takes an overnight trip.
- 41:12But it was awesome. Only broke my windshield and,
- 41:16you know, burned through some rubber.
- 41:18But it was a wonderful time and. That's it.
- 41:21Yeah. Nice.
- 41:22What else? What else do we get in the news?
- 41:25What else is on that list? I'm just trying to it's not dark
- 41:29and I'm going to be Porsche and Toy Story.
- 41:31Did you guys see this? I didn't, can you fill me in so?
- 41:37They've done a collaboration to celebrate Toy Story 5 and I
- 41:43think the underlying message, which I'll talk about in a
- 41:45minute, but they've done 3 limited edition cars that
- 41:50attributes to characters in Toy Story.
- 41:54So the one that's probably the most interesting is the Buzz
- 41:58Lightyear. So they've taken a GT3 Rs.
- 42:02They have basically put a color scheme the same as Buzz's space
- 42:08outfit worked with Goodyear to get special permission to change
- 42:14the tires to Lightyear. But it does make you wonder why
- 42:21there's also a Woody edition, which is it's wood.
- 42:25Panelling on it, please tell me. It's not no, but it does have
- 42:29like a denim type glaze and then when you open it up it's got
- 42:34like. A ham.
- 42:35What's a glaze? Telling me about the denim
- 42:38glaze. It's like a denim colour.
- 42:40It looks like a denim. OK, hand job.
- 42:44And then when you open it up, it's like it's got the the cow
- 42:47pattern carpets. And because he wears that as a
- 42:50waistcoat. Yeah, you don't have to base the
- 42:54car. It's OK.
- 42:55But I think the actual underlying thing is something
- 42:58else and I think it is that you can expect to see Porsche
- 43:02doubling down if not trebling down on Sundavanche.
- 43:06So Sundavanche is the special wishes department.
- 43:09I think we're commercially Porsche are right now.
- 43:12I think they need to make more money and one of the ways that
- 43:15they make more money is by doing more with that unit.
- 43:20Right. So you know, I think there was
- 43:24also in the press like a week ago, I think it was Moldova or
- 43:27somewhere in the Eastern Europeans, there was like a
- 43:30limited edition Sundivant car. I think you can expect big
- 43:35Sundivant stuff at car week and I'm not talking out of turn, but
- 43:40it doesn't I think it's going to be, you know, a way to increase,
- 43:44you know, we talked about it with Ferrari and then their
- 43:46their expertise at you know, getting the most out of a
- 43:49customer in one car and I think. That's a way to highlight, yeah,
- 43:53to showcase the capabilities. I mean, and they did, if you
- 43:56look back, you know, they did the Sally Carrera from cars.
- 44:01I think that was 2022 possibly, and they ended up auctioning it
- 44:07off for charity and I think it went for 3.1 million.
- 44:10So they did that, you know, and then they've had her at Ren's
- 44:14board and various, you know, events around, I mean, and
- 44:18that's another way to show off the cylinder vunch capabilities.
- 44:21So yeah, I think you're right, Dan.
- 44:24It's it's funny though, because, you know, there was a time we
- 44:26didn't even know that existed, that program.
- 44:28Right, right, right. And it really was exclusive,
- 44:31right? And and then it's.
- 44:33You didn't know it. Exists and that's.
- 44:35I could tell you, but then they'd have to kill you.
- 44:37You can't afford it, right? Yeah, you know, and now, I mean,
- 44:40there's gotta, there's gonna have to be something even more
- 44:42exclusive now, right Again. Right.
- 44:44It's like, you know, like when the Platinum card, right,
- 44:47American Express, that was a big deal until everyone had one and
- 44:50then they went to the Black card or whatever, right?
- 44:52I feel like they're going to have to go to the Sunder, Sunder
- 44:55Vunch or something because there's going to be a certain
- 44:58element of enthusiasts who are going to demand more
- 45:00exclusivity. And so it'll be interesting to
- 45:03see, you know, where that that goes.
- 45:06And, and Speaking of special wishes, I don't know how you say
- 45:08it in Italian, but you saw another, yet another prediction
- 45:13that we've been making for years that seems to be coming true.
- 45:16And that's that Ferrari is teasing finally a manual
- 45:19Ferrari, right? The 12 cylinder, right?
- 45:23And, and so, and I think that's where you know, the future is
- 45:27going to go because they can charge whatever they want for
- 45:30that, right? And, and maybe that's where
- 45:32Porsche goes. They start offering manual turbo
- 45:34S s right, or or GT twos or GT3RS right.
- 45:39So it it goes beyond the cosmetic and and and really gets
- 45:45back into the mechanical side of things and because what, what,
- 45:47what more can you make exclusive?
- 45:49Where, where where can you apply these these special wishes?
- 45:52But you know, mechanically, I guess, I guess moving.
- 45:55Forward, I think it's people's imaginations as well, right?
- 45:58It's so there are enough people with blank checkbooks that you
- 46:02know, I think there was a there was a car event like a Luft in
- 46:06in the far. Where was it?
- 46:08It was in Dubai or Saudi Arabia or something.
- 46:11And they there was a brand new manual Cayenne I think, and that
- 46:18was a son Divanche. OK, OK.
- 46:21So I think you come with, you know, you come with the ideas
- 46:26and Porsche have potentially increased their staff to be able
- 46:31to accommodate those ideas and, and basically because the the
- 46:36money talks, you know, there's more profit to be had.
- 46:40They're ready and waiting to make your dreams come true.
- 46:43Yeah, standing by. You remember, so Dan, you're the
- 46:46resident Brett, was it was it Rolls Royce or Bentley, who
- 46:49would often refuse the wishes of their of their clients?
- 46:53So they wouldn't do, for example, a a pink, you know,
- 46:56Rolls Royce, but one would do it and the other wouldn't, right.
- 47:00So I don't know if Bentley were the easy ones or Rolls Royce,
- 47:03but you know, I think that's all gone now.
- 47:06You whatever you want, If you've got enough money, right, you
- 47:08know, they'll they'll they'll do it.
- 47:09And I can't imagine what it cost to engineer a one off manual
- 47:14kind. No, but it's but you talk about
- 47:18Bentley, you know, just give everyone a heads up.
- 47:20If you haven't seen the latest Chris Harris video, he takes
- 47:24Bentley out with the CEO of Bentley.
- 47:26And it's a really interesting video because the guy who's the
- 47:29CEOI can't remember his name, but he basically worked on the
- 47:32Porsche GT products all his career and he was there in the
- 47:36background. And he gets this opportunity to
- 47:38become CEO of Bentley, and he's going to do some really cool
- 47:41stuff with the brand. It's Frank Volliser.
- 47:46Is it? Yeah, I believe.
- 47:48Or, or Frank, as Lindsay calls him.
- 47:51Right, Frankie, my buddy Frankie.
- 47:54Yeah, it's a really good video. Yeah.
- 47:57I'm doing a really good stuff, Bentley.
- 48:00Well, I don't, I mean, I know at the last run sport, I know Laura
- 48:04had a chance to do a it was like a behind the scenes meet and
- 48:08greet with some of the people from Sondra Von I think.
- 48:11And you know, you talk about like one of the car companies
- 48:14declining to make someone's dream come true.
- 48:17And I think what they said was we do have consultants and if
- 48:21somebody comes in with a dream that we don't think will sort of
- 48:26complement, like we don't think it will look the way they expect
- 48:30it to look once it's in real life, you know, on a real car,
- 48:34they're like, we do do our best to sort of guide them.
- 48:37But if somebody's really committed to their vision, we'll
- 48:39make it happen. Well, so there's like a Fashion
- 48:43Police. They're like, we try up to a
- 48:47point, and then if you're really really, you know, determined to
- 48:49have this specific dream, then we grab your hand and we go for
- 48:53it. You you know, who won't do that
- 48:55is is Corvette. And I think we mentioned in an
- 48:57earlier show how Corvette should, you know, start to do
- 49:00some sort of Sonder Vuch program, right?
- 49:03Because as, as the prices of, of Corvettes, especially, you know,
- 49:06cars like the 06 and the 01, I mean, we're, we're competing in
- 49:10a different, you know, a different strata, right, of car
- 49:13buyers. Now, as far as I know, Corvette,
- 49:16you know, GM has never done anything like that.
- 49:18And I, I think that would be a way where hell, I mean, who
- 49:20can't, you know, who can't use a little extra cash right in their
- 49:24corporate coffers, right? I mean, if I could go get a
- 49:26mirror Blau C8 06, like now we're talking, right, that
- 49:32would, you know, that might be enough to draw to draw a Porsche
- 49:34person over to a Corvette who, you know, who otherwise wouldn't
- 49:37be interested. And so, yeah, I think now with
- 49:39technology and and AI and I mean, that's the that's the
- 49:43catch, all right, with the AI, you know, these car cars can do
- 49:46this kind. Of the AI and they're saying
- 49:49yes. So you know, I mean, hell, let's
- 49:52let's let's do it. Let's do it.
- 49:54You know, I wanna I wanna a Volkswagen R right and and
- 49:57Brewster green. You know, how cool would that
- 49:59be? Right, so.
- 50:01You'd be the only guy with one. Heard it here first.
- 50:04I think that's a wrapper. I know you just get wrapped.
- 50:09Should. We is that a mic drop or Yeah.
- 50:15What have we got coming up? I mean, Lindsay, have you got
- 50:18any? You're not going to tease the
- 50:19next car, right? You're going to wait and just
- 50:21that. Yeah, you got to wait and see.
- 50:23But I do have something else coming up.
- 50:25But wait, wait, we heard about car one, right?
- 50:29We didn't really hear much about the Lucid, did you?
- 50:32No, but I mean I'm still I think it's probably best to wait until
- 50:35my time is done. But there is a third car.
- 50:38There is a third car. OK, it's going to be hard to top
- 50:41the the lucid I imagine. Right.
- 50:43I know well, and I will say this until we talk about it in depth,
- 50:46I am really enjoying it. It's the first EV that I've
- 50:50spent, you know any appreciable amount of time with.
- 50:53So that's been really interesting.
- 50:55The learning curve has been less than I anticipated and it's made
- 51:01it really interesting going directly from the Land Cruiser
- 51:03to the Air. But you know, it's keeps it
- 51:07exciting. So so yeah, stay tuned for more
- 51:10in depth discussion once I'm done with the Lucid and then
- 51:14stay tuned to see what I have after the Lucid.
- 51:16Yeah, I can't, I can't wait. I I just took delivery or rented
- 51:22a Mazda CX-50 today. Nice going.
- 51:26To put some miles on it. The first thing I did when I got
- 51:29home is I cracked the windows and checked Amazon for a an
- 51:34ozone bomb because someone I think had probably ubered it for
- 51:39a while and it had that that Seinfeld esque funk.
- 51:44And so hopefully we're going to spend 2000 miles in this thing.
- 51:48I want this thing to to you know, to, to to not kill us.
- 51:52But pretty nice little vehicle. This is just the base car, the
- 51:55non turbo 4, I'm almost positive, but a nice a nice, a
- 51:59nice package. I know car and driver awarded it
- 52:02something at least the turbo version this year is, is one of
- 52:05the better cars in the class. So I'm excited to put some miles
- 52:08on it. But real quick in the in in the
- 52:12rental car line, because we know we get our best stories from
- 52:16from the the car. Did you not ask if you got
- 52:18anything fun? I did ask, and so that's how I
- 52:22ended up with the Mazda instead of a Chevy Traverse stand.
- 52:25There we go. So yeah, smelly or not, I'd
- 52:27still rather take the take the Mazda.
- 52:30But while I was waiting for them to clean the Mazda for me
- 52:33because it had just been returned and I figured it'd be a
- 52:35better option than the Traverse, a couple came in dressed in
- 52:40matching pink velour Las Vegas branded track suits.
- 52:45Who were? This sounds amazing already.
- 52:49Honeymooning. Well, I it was an interesting
- 52:53couple and I'll leave it at that.
- 52:56I don't know if the. Subscribe to Patreon to hear
- 52:58Ryan's unfiltered couple. It was two women.
- 53:02I'm not sure if the younger woman was a spouse or a
- 53:05daughter, but they had just, I think brought this thing back
- 53:08from Las Vegas and they had chipped the window and they were
- 53:11being very kind of decent about reporting this thing.
- 53:14But the outfits I wanted so badly to take a picture.
- 53:17But as I was trying to maneuver my camera, a guy walked in the
- 53:21door and he was obviously from a, you know, from a foreign
- 53:23land. He was, you know, I don't know
- 53:26if Italian or Polish or something.
- 53:28And he comes in and he said I, you know, I'm sorry, I just, I
- 53:32just rented this car. I took it out 10 minutes ago but
- 53:36I I had paid extra for the navigation and I can't figure
- 53:40out how to use it. This poor sucker had used some
- 53:43sort of third party booking site to add on navigation.
- 53:49Do you remember like they used to have these?
- 53:50What were the? Garment.
- 53:52Boxes that yeah, right and. You'd throw on the dash and they
- 53:55had like a weighted octopus on the bottom that was supposed to
- 53:58like, keep it in place. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 54:00In the. Sand.
- 54:01And the guy behind the counter said, you know, Sir, we haven't
- 54:04had these stand alone GPS units in probably 8 or 9 years, right?
- 54:08But apparently booking.com is still charging an add on fee of
- 54:12$25 a day for navigation unit. And I can see this guy, he
- 54:16doesn't want to run data in a foreign country trying to get
- 54:18around Colorado, right? And and I felt so bad for the
- 54:22guy, you know? He's like, So what you're
- 54:24telling me is there is no standalone Garmin unit that I
- 54:27can borrow, so I. Don't know if that's still a
- 54:29thing in Europe or whatever, but it's I haven't even thought
- 54:31about that in years, much less try to try to, you know, order
- 54:34one for my rental car. So, but no head on.
- 54:37Sorry. Yeah, it got real dark.
- 54:43Literally unfigurative. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:45So, yeah, you know, I'm telling you, I think a perfect reality
- 54:49show would just be like, at the budget rental counter, right, To
- 54:51watch these people come in, There was someone else who was
- 54:54jumping through every hoop to use a debit card versus a credit
- 54:57card to rent a car. And he just, yeah, you just kind
- 55:01of felt sorry for them. At some point it's not worth it.
- 55:03Just pull out your credit card. Yeah.
- 55:07Well, if I guess if you don't have one, but that's a great
- 55:09house for right, that's right. Of course, any.
- 55:11Confessions of a of a rental car desk clerk.
- 55:16Yeah, I hear Costco very good for car rental.
- 55:21I've never tried that. Where do the cars come from?
- 55:23There's they still come from Enterprise.
- 55:25Yeah, it's usual. I've not used it, but apparently
- 55:28you get, I can drive it free and if you've got Costco membership,
- 55:33it's it's cheaper. I've not I've not got membership
- 55:36but but there's your consumer advice for the week.
- 55:39Yes, yes. And Dan, by the way, when I did
- 55:41say did you have anything fun, you know this wasn't the airport
- 55:45in LA, right? So or Monterey during car, yeah.
- 55:49Right, right, right. So Mazda CX-50 it was, but it'll
- 55:52be a a good car I'm sure so. That's wild.
- 55:56You can't go wrong with that over a Chevrolet Blazer, right?
- 55:59Absolutely. So your.
- 56:00Advice. I mean, I think just for the
- 56:02sake of content we probably need to be one of us renting a car
- 56:05once a month and just hang out at the rental counter for a
- 56:07while, collect some stories. I think Lindsay can do 52 weeks
- 56:13of press cars. I know you're on a roll.
- 56:16Hey, with any luck right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 56:19It's a worthy goal. Yes, yes, this lucid that you
- 56:23have, OK, because this isn't the same one that Spike's got,
- 56:27obviously because you have them at the same time.
- 56:29Concurrently, it's currently. Is the word.
- 56:32Magic of podcasting. We are driving the same car in
- 56:35the same week, different ends of the West Coast.
- 56:38I was going to give you props for getting it first, but.
- 56:41But actually he had a different one.
- 56:43He had a different one. Was it a yeah?
- 56:46He's now got the sapphire. We don't.
- 56:49Have the sapphire do you? No, I have the air touring.
- 56:54What did he have? Did he have the gravity?
- 56:56Or didn't have an air touring I think.
- 56:57And then he got the Sapphire. OK.
- 57:00So what we're hearing is the progression is I will be getting
- 57:02the Sapphire next. Yes, yes, I all live in Spike's
- 57:06shadow, but. Yeah.
- 57:09And then? Yeah.
- 57:12That's. Right, exactly.
- 57:15I got to drive. I got to drive the gravity at
- 57:18Mudfest, which is their SUV kind of crossover ish silhouette.
- 57:23And then obviously I'm getting to spend the week with the Air
- 57:26Touring, which is their sedan, which.
- 57:28Is cool. Yeah.
- 57:30Well, good on us, good on you. I mean, right, Life is good.
- 57:34Yeah. Well, I've got a, I've got a
- 57:36U-Haul coming up. You know what?
- 57:40It's potato. Potato.
- 57:41Really. Wait till we get to that rental
- 57:43counter, Dean. There we go.
- 57:45It's I'm. Scary to say.
- 57:47Do you have anything fun at EU Haul counter?
- 57:50It's I think apparently you, you don't even go to the counter.
- 57:54You have to do it over the phone with a person and like show them
- 57:57your driver's license. And it's slightly different from
- 58:01the last time I rented one, but. One more U-Haul thing in the
- 58:05news yesterday, U-Haul was very proud because they just
- 58:08introduced their biggest, I guess most luxurious model yet.
- 58:13It's built on a a Peterbilt. So Peterbilt is usually a
- 58:16vehicle that most people without ACDL can't drive, right?
- 58:19These are these semi trucks, these over the road trucks, but
- 58:22they now have one that's built on a Peterbilt.
- 58:25I think it's gas powered not diesel powered but it is the
- 58:28biggest heaviest vehicle that you can rent without ACDL.
- 58:32And the funny part is the cut off for needing a CDL is 26,000
- 58:36lbs I believe. Guess how much this new U-Haul
- 58:39weighs? 2559. 2599. 9 Dang.
- 58:48Just don't put anything in the back anyway.
- 58:53It's like when you see people look at like the towing capacity
- 58:56or the load bearing, whatever and they're like, so we can go
- 58:58up to that, right? Yeah, sure.
- 59:01Yeah, We wish you all the luck in the world.
- 59:06Thank you. I'll be thinking of you and your
- 59:07Lucid and your master. I'll be in a Ford truck, right
- 59:13I'm. Telling yourself it's the same
- 59:15difference and we're all just out here living the dream.
- 59:18Or Peterbilt, if you're lucky. Yeah, there we go.
- 59:21There we go. Well, I think we're a show,
- 59:22aren't we? Yeah, I.
- 59:23Think so. Thanks.
- 59:24Thanks guys. Yeah.
