Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You're listening to Home in Progress, sponsored by Recolite Paints
- 0:03Speaker 1: and Benjamin More and today I've got a packed show
- 0:06Speaker 1: and we're covering a little bit of everything. Later on
- 0:09Speaker 1: at the end, I'm going to be digging into how
- 0:11Speaker 1: to choose the right paint colors for east facing rooms.
- 0:14Speaker 1: You know, these spaces can be a little bit tricky
- 0:16Speaker 1: thanks to their shifting light, but with the right approach,
- 0:18Speaker 1: they can really shine.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We're going to get to that.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Before we do, we're going to be looking at Benjamin
- 0:23Speaker 1: Moore scuff X. It's a high performance paint that's making
- 0:25Speaker 1: a huge impact in schools, senior housing and hotels throughout
- 0:30Speaker 1: West Michigan. It's durable, it's washable, it resists scuffs unlike
- 0:34Speaker 1: anything I've ever seen, and in a lot of facilities,
- 0:37Speaker 1: it's cutting down maintenance work in a big way. We're
- 0:39Speaker 1: going to talk about that. I'm also going to be
- 0:41Speaker 1: giving an update on some Ego battery powered lawn equipment
- 0:44Speaker 1: that I reviewed a few years back. You know, back
- 0:46Speaker 1: then I was a huge fan. But the real test
- 0:49Speaker 1: is how it holds up over time.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So what's the scoop? Am I still happy with it?
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'm going to get to that in a little bit,
- 0:55Speaker 1: but first I want to start with something that happened
- 0:58Speaker 1: to me in front of all my names last week.
- 1:01Speaker 1: It was classic, classic me. So I'm working on replacing
- 1:05Speaker 1: a sprinkler head. All right, I dig it up, I
- 1:08Speaker 1: unscrew the old one, I put the new one in place,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and then I turn the sprinklers back on. Now the
- 1:13Speaker 1: new head is spinning around in a full circle, you know,
- 1:17Speaker 1: And all I need to do to be done with
- 1:18Speaker 1: this job is to dial it in, you know. So
- 1:20Speaker 1: it's hitting the zone exactly the way I want, going
- 1:23Speaker 1: a little bit this way to the right, hitting a
- 1:25Speaker 1: stopping point, and then going back to the left, hitting
- 1:27Speaker 1: the stopping point, and then just repeating that.
- 1:29Speaker 2: That's all I need to do.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So I go online, because I can never remember how
- 1:33Speaker 1: to do this just just from memory. I go online
- 1:37Speaker 1: and look it up, and I see how it's supposed
- 1:39Speaker 1: to be done, very simple. So I do that, and
- 1:42Speaker 1: of course it doesn't work. The sprinkler is still spinning
- 1:45Speaker 1: in this slow circle, spraying the road, spraying everywhere. So
- 1:48Speaker 1: I keep doing it, you know, adjusting it the way
- 1:50Speaker 1: the manufacturer says to do, and no luck, no go,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you know, it goes on and on and on like this,
- 1:57Speaker 1: probably thirty minutes or so.
- 1:59Speaker 2: You know, I'm getting re sick of it at this point.
- 2:01Speaker 1: The kids are trying to help me, but wherever they stand,
- 2:04Speaker 1: you know, I manually adjust the sprinkler quickly, and then
- 2:07Speaker 1: I almost hit them. It's not their fault, I know that.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I know they're just trying to be helpful. But I
- 2:14Speaker 1: needed them to not be there right so I could
- 2:16Speaker 1: just work. There was nowhere that they could choose to
- 2:18Speaker 1: go that I wasn't going to spray them, So I
- 2:20Speaker 1: asked them, just please, please just just fade away into
- 2:24Speaker 1: the background, you know, give me some.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Space to work here. So they do that.
- 2:28Speaker 1: They can tell I'm a little tense, and I go
- 2:30Speaker 1: back to work on the sprinkler.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I'm fidgeting of it.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm adjusting it, I'm tweaking it, I'm checking the web,
- 2:35Speaker 1: you know, and still I can't make it work. You know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: forty five minutes in, I've probably been working on it.
- 2:41Speaker 1: The kids are far away now on the yard, and
- 2:44Speaker 1: they're giving me the space I need. They can tell
- 2:46Speaker 1: the tension is running a little bit high. The neighbors,
- 2:50Speaker 1: you know, across the street They're all kind of watching
- 2:52Speaker 1: me from their yards because they can see I'm really struggling.
- 2:55Speaker 1: It's really interesting, you know, watching this little guy just
- 3:00Speaker 1: not be able to pull this off. So anyway, all
- 3:02Speaker 1: of that's going on, and in the midst of all
- 3:05Speaker 1: of that, my absolute ridiculous black lab Fern. I've talked
- 3:09Speaker 1: about her on the show. She's sweet, but she's kind
- 3:12Speaker 1: of a dope. She gets loose, you know, away from
- 3:15Speaker 1: one of the kids, and she comes bareing at me.
- 3:18Speaker 2: She didn't know where I was. All of a sudden
- 3:19Speaker 2: she spotted me.
- 3:20Speaker 1: She comes busting at me, and I thought she was
- 3:22Speaker 1: going to run on the road, and so I jumped up.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I grabbed her leash, and then I bent over, you know,
- 3:27Speaker 1: to look seriously and deeply into her eyes and convey
- 3:31Speaker 1: the idea that she needed to sit down and behave
- 3:35Speaker 1: all right. So as I'm standing there, hunched over my
- 3:38Speaker 1: backside facing the road, you know, wiggling back and forth,
- 3:43Speaker 1: as I'm trying to convey to Fern that she needs
- 3:45Speaker 1: to be obedient, you know, I'm doing all that three
- 3:48Speaker 1: feet away from a sprinkler that I've completely forgotten about
- 3:52Speaker 1: and which is still spinning slowly around.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Well, you can see where this is going.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Of course, it hit me directly in the bottom, full
- 4:00Speaker 1: blast at you know, at point blank range. It was
- 4:04Speaker 1: a direct hit cold cold water. Let me tell you,
- 4:08Speaker 1: cold well water a powerful jetting blast. You know. I
- 4:12Speaker 1: don't know that I need to explain it much more clearly.
- 4:15Speaker 1: It was an eye opening experience, to say the least.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I jumped higher than I thought I was capable of
- 4:21Speaker 1: jumping at that point. And then I yelled, you know,
- 4:24Speaker 1: nothing in particular, nothing bad, just a loud, startled yell
- 4:27Speaker 1: that was really more like a high pitched you know,
- 4:29Speaker 1: kind of like an ek, you know, and it wasn't
- 4:31Speaker 1: an eke, but it was more that than it was
- 4:33Speaker 1: a yell. It wasn't manly. Let's just say that Fern's
- 4:37Speaker 1: eyes went absolutely wide and she took off towards the house.
- 4:42Speaker 1: I don't think she knew what was going down at
- 4:44Speaker 1: that point, but she was getting the heck out of
- 4:46Speaker 1: Dodge when she saw me jump. The kids they saw
- 4:50Speaker 1: it happen, and they all took off across the yard
- 4:52Speaker 1: in different directions, laughing as they went. I spun around,
- 4:56Speaker 1: you know, trying to act cool, trying to salvage something
- 4:59Speaker 1: of the this moment, you know, like I maybe had
- 5:01Speaker 1: planned this, that this is all part of my sprinkler plan.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I'm going to just take one for the team, you know,
- 5:08Speaker 1: direct hit right for the team, and somehow that's going
- 5:11Speaker 1: to help me get the sprinkler fixed. You know, I
- 5:12Speaker 1: don't know what I'm thinking, but I'm trying to look cool.
- 5:15Speaker 1: What else can you do at that point? Well, I
- 5:17Speaker 1: look at the neighbors and they're all randomly looking everywhere
- 5:20Speaker 1: but in my direction.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You know, I clearly they'd seen.
- 5:23Speaker 1: The whole thing. You know, they're probably still thinking about it.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Do these things happen to anybody else out there? Please
- 5:30Speaker 1: tell me they do? Or am I completely alone in
- 5:33Speaker 1: all of this?
- 5:34Speaker 2: Anyway, I don't know.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I thought that was a great home improvement story to
- 5:39Speaker 1: start the show, and I was very excited to share
- 5:42Speaker 1: that with you after I've recovered from the experience. I've
- 5:45Speaker 1: been sitting on a donut pillow for about a week now,
- 5:49Speaker 1: but finally I'm able to be, you know, fluid like
- 5:53Speaker 1: I used to be, you know, in movement.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Anyway, I wanted to share that.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Now let's get to the show, and I want to
- 5:59Speaker 1: start by talking about Ego lawn equipment, battery powered lawn equipment.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And to help me do that, I've got Kevin Herman
- 6:06Speaker 1: from Benjamin Moore, believe it or not, here in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: studio with me. Kevin, thanks for being.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Here, Thank you for having me.
- 6:14Speaker 1: I didn't necessarily want to have you here, Kevin, but no,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I did nobody else to talk to. I know, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: do get bored after a while. I want to talk
- 6:22Speaker 1: about like completely different things. I want to talk about
- 6:25Speaker 1: paint stuff, all right, scuff X in particular. Before we
- 6:29Speaker 1: get to that, I want to talk about yard equipment.
- 6:33Speaker 1: And you know, because that's who we go to for
- 6:36Speaker 1: expert advice, is are the pink guy?
- 6:38Speaker 2: The pink guy?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Yeah, for no matter what we're talking about. No, the
- 6:41Speaker 1: Ego battery powered lawn equipment stuff, it's something that I
- 6:45Speaker 1: bought and talked about on the show probably four years
- 6:48Speaker 1: ago or so, I'm not exactly sure how long ago.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I've had it for a while and I bought an
- 6:55Speaker 1: Ego Ego battery powered weed whip. I have the Hey trimmer,
- 7:01Speaker 1: and I have the leaf blower, and I got two
- 7:03Speaker 1: battery packs that go with it. When I bought it,
- 7:06Speaker 1: I was not big on battery powered anything, you know.
- 7:10Speaker 3: I yeah, I have the fear too.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yeah. I just I wanted it to work, and I've
- 7:14Speaker 1: not had good experience with anything like that for that
- 7:17Speaker 1: kind of equipment.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Yep.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And I did a lot of reading about it, a
- 7:21Speaker 1: lot of reviews I read, and I jumped in and
- 7:24Speaker 1: I loved it. You know.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I think my favorite part, and I mentioned it over
- 7:28Speaker 2: and over again, was the hedge trimmer.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I don't use that very often. I had an electric one,
- 7:34Speaker 1: and I went through so many power chords.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I've cut them myself.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Yeah, just sliced right through them and.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Little shock sometimes.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 1: This made it so easy, you know, just get it
- 7:45Speaker 1: and go the leaf blower. I didn't have to drape
- 7:47Speaker 1: chords over everything. But I was always back on my
- 7:49Speaker 1: mind thinking, you know, how long is this going to last?
- 7:52Speaker 3: Did they have enough power?
- 7:53Speaker 1: Yeah? Well I found out it had enough power, yep,
- 7:56Speaker 1: And how long is it going to last? And the
- 7:58Speaker 1: first after the first year, I came on air and
- 8:01Speaker 1: I talked about it and oh yeah, man, it's still
- 8:02Speaker 1: working good. Uh Now it's got to be my fourth
- 8:06Speaker 1: season and there's still incredible you know. I was doing
- 8:10Speaker 1: the hedge trimmer thing this past two weekends ago, and it's.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Still I'm blown away.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It's battery powered and I'm cutting through things that have
- 8:19Speaker 1: to be more than a quarter of an inch in diameter.
- 8:24Speaker 2: You know, it's huge.
- 8:25Speaker 3: I can't believe that using it like a like a
- 8:28Speaker 3: I'm using are something.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Should not be I'm sure of that. But it is
- 8:32Speaker 2: going through big stuff, and.
- 8:35Speaker 3: I'm I'm uh. You know. I was definitely partial to
- 8:39Speaker 3: the gas, but I don't like the change oil. I
- 8:42Speaker 3: don't like the maintenance aspects. So I switched over to
- 8:44Speaker 3: some electric stuff a few years ago, and uh, I've
- 8:47Speaker 3: been extremely happy without, especially the EGO products.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Right you switched over, I mean one of the big things,
- 8:53Speaker 1: because we had you on the air talking about it,
- 8:55Speaker 1: and I think it's time to do a little follow
- 8:57Speaker 1: up and you know, let people know how this is
- 9:00Speaker 1: held up. You bought the rider.
- 9:02Speaker 3: It's still forty two. I think they have a couple
- 9:04Speaker 3: different size of the forty two inch riding lawnmore which, yeah,
- 9:09Speaker 3: it has four batteries that it came with ten hamp
- 9:11Speaker 3: hours each and then it has space for two more.
- 9:14Speaker 3: So I could do two acres with that thing without
- 9:16Speaker 3: a problem. If I had all the batteries, so I
- 9:18Speaker 3: do a little over an acre, an acre, one point two,
- 9:20Speaker 3: one point three acre, something like that. And uh, I
- 9:25Speaker 3: was starting to get a little disappointed the beginning of
- 9:27Speaker 3: the year this year, and has had.
- 9:29Speaker 1: It last year.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I've had it, and I've had it for this is
- 9:31Speaker 3: my third year, maybe fourth years, had it for a
- 9:33Speaker 3: few years. And the battery charge wasn't holding up like
- 9:38Speaker 3: it used to, and uh what didn't go as fast?
- 9:41Speaker 3: And it seemed to be pulling to one side. And
- 9:46Speaker 3: took a look at it, and all I had to
- 9:48Speaker 3: do was put some air in attires.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Now, I think this is really funny. And you you
- 9:53Speaker 1: are cutting yourself a little too much slack there because
- 9:57Speaker 1: you told me about this last week.
- 10:00Speaker 2: You weren't just I.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Wasn't going to embellish on my stupidity.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Embellish on the stupidity.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Damn.
- 10:05Speaker 2: You were so bummed.
- 10:07Speaker 1: You know, it's not working, it's not doing this, it's
- 10:10Speaker 1: not doing that. And then you examined it.
- 10:12Speaker 2: A little more closely, actually paid.
- 10:14Speaker 1: And riding it all over the place, and you look
- 10:16Speaker 1: at it and you said, multiple tires are completely The.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Left tire in the back was basically riding on the rim.
- 10:24Speaker 3: I don't know why I didn't notice the leaning, but
- 10:26Speaker 3: that probably why it didn't want to go straight. And
- 10:29Speaker 3: then the front two tires, I didn't think they took air,
- 10:32Speaker 3: but they have bellf stems on them. They do, It
- 10:35Speaker 3: turns out they do. And one of them was so
- 10:37Speaker 3: flat that it has these weird looking bulges in the side.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Now that I've filled it.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Up, Oh so now you've damn it.
- 10:44Speaker 3: It looks like it has growth because it was running
- 10:46Speaker 3: on flat for so long.
- 10:49Speaker 1: You had another thing that something like a little bolt
- 10:51Speaker 1: or something. Oh, the tightening.
- 10:53Speaker 3: Well, we don't have to get into all this, but
- 10:56Speaker 3: when I did.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And it would plow a little furrow in your.
- 10:59Speaker 3: Yeah, one of the one of the little I guess
- 11:02Speaker 3: carriage wheels underneath the mower assembly. I broke it off
- 11:07Speaker 3: and then I attached it, but the boat was bent
- 11:10Speaker 3: to so I didn't put it all the way back on,
- 11:12Speaker 3: and it kind of dangled down a little bit, and
- 11:16Speaker 3: every time I turned, it would plow the ground either direction,
- 11:20Speaker 3: left or right.
- 11:21Speaker 1: That's so funny. This thing is just junk. And it
- 11:25Speaker 1: turns out you're just a terrible, terrible owner.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Well of you know, I don't have to put gas
- 11:30Speaker 3: in it, or oil or anything. So I didn't think
- 11:32Speaker 3: I had to do anything with it. No, it's a maintenance.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Free it needs a little bit of lot.
- 11:36Speaker 3: So now guess what, I'm really happy with it again.
- 11:39Speaker 3: It goes just as fast it goes straight. I'm able
- 11:42Speaker 3: to do the same amount of yard that I was
- 11:44Speaker 3: able to before. It turns out that air and attires
- 11:48Speaker 3: is important.
- 11:50Speaker 1: I think it's hilarious because when you to tell me this,
- 11:53Speaker 1: I thought, oh, no, you don't like it anymore because
- 11:57Speaker 1: we came out and we really advocated.
- 12:00Speaker 3: I didn't like the way it was seemed like it
- 12:02Speaker 3: was working well.
- 12:03Speaker 2: And it turns out, no, it's it's a happy ending.
- 12:05Speaker 3: You're just I'm just an idiot.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I didn't want to say an idiot. I was thinking dope,
- 12:10Speaker 1: but I don't know if you can say it on
- 12:12Speaker 1: the radio. I think I can. I just did, so
- 12:16Speaker 1: we'll wait for the letters to come.
- 12:17Speaker 3: So anyway, the bottom line is very happy with it still.
- 12:21Speaker 1: So that's a rider. I know Ego makes battery powered
- 12:24Speaker 1: push more. I was always going to try that. Haley
- 12:27Speaker 1: has one of those. Haley used to be.
- 12:29Speaker 3: I think Dave has one too. Who does Dave helme?
- 12:32Speaker 1: Okay, Dave, he's the general manager at Rappol, he's got
- 12:35Speaker 1: one as well. Does he like that? Do you know?
- 12:36Speaker 3: I believe he loves it?
- 12:37Speaker 1: Okay? Yeah, I was watching a neighbor guy doing that
- 12:40Speaker 1: the other day with his I don't remember. I think
- 12:43Speaker 1: his was an ego as well. But there are other
- 12:45Speaker 1: brands out there, yes, but utterly silent, very quiet, really.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Really you heard the worring of the blade.
- 12:51Speaker 1: That's and that's what your rider is.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Just truly truly silent, and it flies.
- 12:55Speaker 3: It goes pretty fast. It goes fast enough now yeah,
- 13:00Speaker 3: h it goes much faster, so st these years, still
- 13:03Speaker 3: two thumbs up. Yeah. I was really disappointed a few
- 13:06Speaker 3: weeks ago. Now I'm back to being happy again.
- 13:08Speaker 1: No, I definitely love mine. I would definitely recommend digging
- 13:11Speaker 1: into it. You know, if you've got gas powered lawn equipment,
- 13:15Speaker 1: that you're using electric stuff, or even if you've gone
- 13:19Speaker 1: the cheap o battery route, you know, those things you
- 13:22Speaker 1: do have to pay to get something that's going to
- 13:25Speaker 1: hold up m h.
- 13:27Speaker 3: And then you have to do a little maintenance, do
- 13:28Speaker 3: a little.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Bit of maintenance mine, right, minor maintenance, but the thing
- 13:33Speaker 1: that I love most about like the stuff that I've got,
- 13:35Speaker 1: the leaf flower, the leaf blower, in the hedge trimmers,
- 13:38Speaker 1: and honestly the weed whip because I had a gas
- 13:41Speaker 1: powered weed whip that I could never keep consistently, you.
- 13:44Speaker 3: Know, easyning start.
- 13:45Speaker 1: That was real pain in the net. And the other
- 13:48Speaker 1: two pieces that I had were both electric. I did
- 13:51Speaker 1: have a gas powered leaf floor, but that was the
- 13:52Speaker 1: same thing. Could never you know, it was I was
- 13:55Speaker 1: never confident that when I go out and need it,
- 13:57Speaker 1: it was going to.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Be ready to go without the same same thing.
- 13:59Speaker 1: I work with it. But with the electric ones, they
- 14:01Speaker 1: were always ready to go. But now I've got to
- 14:03Speaker 1: drape a cord everywhere I go, and that just got
- 14:06Speaker 1: old after a while. And so what I would do
- 14:08Speaker 1: is I just wouldn't do it as often. I would wait,
- 14:11Speaker 1: you know, save it up till I really needed it.
- 14:13Speaker 1: With this battery powered stuff, I can go right away
- 14:17Speaker 1: whenever it's ready to go all the time. As long
- 14:20Speaker 1: as I've charged the batteries, I'm good to go.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Yep, the batteries have to be charged, but they don't
- 14:24Speaker 3: take long.
- 14:25Speaker 1: No, Well, that's the other surprising thing. Yeah, really quick
- 14:28Speaker 1: on pretty fast. So anyway, I'll put links in the
- 14:30Speaker 1: show notes if you're looking at or still debating the
- 14:34Speaker 1: whole battery powered lawn equipment thing. It's the real deal
- 14:37Speaker 1: and definitely something to look into. All right, let's take
- 14:40Speaker 1: a break, Kevin, and then when we come back, I
- 14:43Speaker 1: want to talk about scuff X and some interesting success
- 14:47Speaker 1: that you're having with Okay, sure, all right, so good
- 14:49Speaker 1: that in just a minute stick around Home in Progress
- 14:52Speaker 1: is brought to you by Repcolite Paints and Benjamin Moore.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Top to your paint expert advice. Your next project is
- 14:58Speaker 1: way easier than you think it's going to be. Well,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I am still in the studio with Kevin Herman.
- 15:04Speaker 3: From Good Morning again, Kevin, thanks.
- 15:06Speaker 1: For waiting with me. Over the break. We just talked
- 15:08Speaker 1: about lawn equipment, battery powered lawn equipment, and now we're
- 15:12Speaker 1: going to tap into the other thing that you're an
- 15:14Speaker 1: absolute expert at and.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Fishing.
- 15:17Speaker 1: No, no, not fishing. Someday we should talk about fishing
- 15:21Speaker 1: because that's your true love. M M right right, that's
- 15:24Speaker 1: the big hobby for Kevin. We're not going to talk
- 15:26Speaker 1: about fishing. Let's talk about scuff X. Basically, you've been
- 15:30Speaker 1: doing some really interesting problems solving lately. You know, you've
- 15:33Speaker 1: been having conversations with a lot of different facilities around
- 15:36Speaker 1: our area about some of their ongoing maintenance headache.
- 15:40Speaker 2: You know, why don't you walk us through.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Just the types of places you've been working with and
- 15:44Speaker 1: what kinds of paint challenges they've been dealing with.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Well, what I'm looking for is are the maintenance facilities
- 15:52Speaker 3: where they have some major challenges to keep the walls
- 15:55Speaker 3: looking good. Any places where they have carts gurned, these stretchers,
- 16:03Speaker 3: wheelchairs things, yeah, all those things, or young children that
- 16:07Speaker 3: are aggressive with their boots and stuff against the walls
- 16:11Speaker 3: and schools, So looking at senior living facilities, schools, universities, hotels,
- 16:20Speaker 3: anywhere where they just can't get paint to hold up.
- 16:24Speaker 2: So what are the things that they're running into that they're.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Well, I mean there's lots of touch up regular paints
- 16:31Speaker 3: hold marks. Right, If you like, take your bottom of
- 16:35Speaker 3: your shoe, if it's a black shoe and you kick
- 16:37Speaker 3: the wall, it's going to leave a scuff mark. Same
- 16:39Speaker 3: thing with the gurneys and the wheelchairs and all those things.
- 16:42Speaker 3: They have black rubber on them and they tend to
- 16:46Speaker 3: make a lot of marks in the walls, and that's
- 16:47Speaker 3: just standard and regular paint just holds it and it's
- 16:50Speaker 3: hard to clean off. Well, we have a product called
- 16:52Speaker 3: scuff X which is kind of remarkable in its ability
- 16:57Speaker 3: to not even have those marks leave.
- 17:01Speaker 1: They don't show up.
- 17:02Speaker 3: They don't even show up, and if they do, it's
- 17:05Speaker 3: easy to clean off.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So you start talking to these places like we're these
- 17:08Speaker 1: things things that they were, you know, just they accepted
- 17:12Speaker 1: this is just how it is, and we.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Go, oh yeah, almost have to. And so they have
- 17:15Speaker 3: to paint a lot in order to keep some of
- 17:17Speaker 3: those areas looking good. They have to paint multiple times
- 17:20Speaker 3: a year, which is an expense, and then the products
- 17:24Speaker 3: just don't hold up. So as soon as it's painted,
- 17:26Speaker 3: it shortly starts to look just like it did. So
- 17:31Speaker 3: what I ask them for is those areas that they
- 17:34Speaker 3: just can't find anything that works, and we give them
- 17:36Speaker 3: some scuff X and they try it out and typically
- 17:38Speaker 3: they're very happy. It'll it'll cut down the amount of
- 17:41Speaker 3: times you have to paint enormously, all.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Right, So you start putting some scuff X in their hands,
- 17:47Speaker 1: like what was the first I mean, are they skeptical
- 17:50Speaker 1: that its going to work out.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Everybody skeptical. We've all been promised to how things are
- 17:54Speaker 3: going to work and this is a next miracle product
- 17:57Speaker 3: and a few of them live up.
- 17:59Speaker 1: So what's your like when you go in there? You
- 18:01Speaker 1: tell them it's it's a miracle product. It's gonna do?
- 18:03Speaker 1: I mean, what do you tell them?
- 18:04Speaker 3: Well, I tell them it is going to work extremely well.
- 18:07Speaker 3: But I don't want them just to believe me, so
- 18:12Speaker 3: I give them some product to try and they test
- 18:14Speaker 3: it out.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Product.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Yeah, give them some gallons because I know what's gonna
- 18:18Speaker 3: be the result. I know they're going to be. First
- 18:20Speaker 3: of all, they're going to like the application. It's gonna
- 18:22Speaker 3: go on. Well, it's gonna be very smooth. It's gonna
- 18:25Speaker 3: look like it's sprayed. It's it's a very nice product
- 18:27Speaker 3: to apply.
- 18:28Speaker 1: But how was that different from other products?
- 18:30Speaker 3: How they apply this just flows and levels and it
- 18:33Speaker 3: feels like an automotive finish is very smooth. So Russian rolling,
- 18:37Speaker 3: rush and rolling give you a phenomenal finish, even rushing
- 18:41Speaker 3: and rolling. But the big difference is it doesn't have
- 18:45Speaker 3: to cure to be durable. It has its durability as
- 18:47Speaker 3: soon as it's dried.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Okay, so other products, you know, not every they have
- 18:51Speaker 1: to cure. Okay, talk about that. How long does cure?
- 18:53Speaker 3: So latex products typically take up to a month of
- 18:57Speaker 3: fully cure. Usually within a week they're most of the
- 18:59Speaker 3: way to weeks they're pretty much cured. But that's all
- 19:03Speaker 3: time that it's susceptible to abuse and.
- 19:07Speaker 2: When it is cured, you know most other products.
- 19:09Speaker 3: Yeah, it's not never going to be what Scuffe says,
- 19:12Speaker 3: even after the first hour of dry time.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And that's that's our products too.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Right, everything and more products everything.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Just oh, this product and everybody else's.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Scuffox is unique.
- 19:23Speaker 2: It's very unique in that regard.
- 19:26Speaker 3: It's just a maintenance coding. It's for facilities where you
- 19:28Speaker 3: have a lot of abuse in the walls. This is
- 19:30Speaker 3: what you want, all.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Right, So you put it in their hands, they start
- 19:33Speaker 1: working with it. You know what, what is the feedback
- 19:36Speaker 1: that you get back?
- 19:37Speaker 3: They like the application. Typically they're wowed by that, and
- 19:41Speaker 3: then with a little bit of time to live with
- 19:43Speaker 3: it and see how it holds up and how they
- 19:46Speaker 3: don't have the mark showing up like they did before,
- 19:49Speaker 3: or if they do get one, how easy I mean,
- 19:51Speaker 3: I have people to take it. They put their finger
- 19:53Speaker 3: in their mouth and they use a little slava to
- 19:55Speaker 3: clean the mark off the wall.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I've seen people lick that mark right off.
- 19:59Speaker 3: The wall, just like five or we don't recommend let's
- 20:03Speaker 3: let's use a cloth with some don or something.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Well, I'm not saying that was the best way to go.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I'm just saying it's stuck in my mind.
- 20:09Speaker 3: All right, that's weird.
- 20:11Speaker 1: So you're seeing that kind of success, and I know
- 20:14Speaker 1: that you mentioned in other conversations that we had that
- 20:17Speaker 1: a couple of these places are rolling it out to
- 20:20Speaker 1: you know, you've brought it to one particular facility, but
- 20:23Speaker 1: they've got other buildings, other areas, and.
- 20:26Speaker 3: The word gets out quickly. It's uh, it's a phenomenal product.
- 20:29Speaker 2: So what makes it do what it's doing?
- 20:32Speaker 3: You know, do you have I don't know. Technically, they
- 20:34Speaker 3: don't tell us it's proprietary stuff. It just feels extremely smooth,
- 20:40Speaker 3: like there's very little friction on it, and that's why
- 20:42Speaker 3: it doesn't grab those marks. Now, we've been a right
- 20:46Speaker 3: over top.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We've done you know, displays in our stores, We've done
- 20:50Speaker 1: displays at events. You know, we've painted half of a
- 20:52Speaker 1: wall with something that you know is somebody else's or
- 20:56Speaker 1: one of our other products. Right, it's something that's supposed
- 20:58Speaker 1: to be as good, you know, resist all of the scuffs,
- 21:00Speaker 1: and half of it is that, and then the same
- 21:02Speaker 1: color will make the other half be scuff X, and
- 21:05Speaker 1: we'll take a tool that will mark that up. And
- 21:08Speaker 1: it literally looks like a like a stage show, like
- 21:11Speaker 1: some kind of act, because it does look that over
- 21:14Speaker 1: the wall, and one half, the non scuff X half
- 21:17Speaker 1: is all dark, all all marks, and it instantly stops
- 21:21Speaker 1: when you hit the scuff.
- 21:21Speaker 3: It's pretty cool. The one of the best demonstrations I
- 21:24Speaker 3: saw was when you guys did that designer show and
- 21:27Speaker 3: you had that Cheshire cat. So the piece of drywall
- 21:32Speaker 3: you had looked like just a blank white piece of drywall.
- 21:36Speaker 3: But you'd use two different products, one from our competitor
- 21:38Speaker 3: and then scuff X and scuff X is where you
- 21:41Speaker 3: wanted the everything to stay white, right, the eyes and
- 21:44Speaker 3: the teeth. Yeah, and everything just appeared as you started
- 21:48Speaker 3: abusing the surface. It was really fun.
- 21:50Speaker 1: It was so smart. I think that that was Hayley's idea.
- 21:53Speaker 1: It was an Alice in Wonderland kind of loosely themed
- 21:56Speaker 1: event and it was it was like, yeah, it was
- 21:59Speaker 1: really cool that cat came out.
- 22:02Speaker 3: As people started abusing the drywall with the markers.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Yeah. And I put scuff X in an entryway at
- 22:08Speaker 1: my home and it was previously a place where we
- 22:12Speaker 1: had just shoe marks, you know, the kids would come
- 22:15Speaker 1: in and kick their shoes off, Like.
- 22:17Speaker 3: A boot area is a fantastic area for this at home.
- 22:19Speaker 1: And I haven't had to do anything to that. It's
- 22:21Speaker 1: been painted that way for probably five years, touched. It
- 22:25Speaker 1: looks great. So where else, you know, we're talking about facilities.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, help people.
- 22:32Speaker 1: Kind of find a place in their own space to
- 22:34Speaker 1: use this. I mean, if you're a facility manager or
- 22:37Speaker 1: you know.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Then then it's no brainer. Any any area that you
- 22:40Speaker 3: can't keep clean or looking good, that's where you want
- 22:42Speaker 3: to use SCUFFE sit at home though, the boot room
- 22:46Speaker 3: or whatever you refer to that a is a great place.
- 22:49Speaker 3: A hallway, kids playroom, anywhere where an extraordinary amount of
- 22:56Speaker 3: abuse is going to happen to the walls, that's where
- 22:58Speaker 3: you want to use scuff.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Actually definitely did it some hallways. I did it in
- 23:01Speaker 1: a kid's room and been thrilled with the results on that.
- 23:05Speaker 1: A couple of downsides to it, now that I think
- 23:07Speaker 1: about it, and I don't know that they were downsides,
- 23:09Speaker 1: But my kid was a little bummed.
- 23:11Speaker 2: She was going to hang She.
- 23:12Speaker 1: Had all these little sticky sticky things, yea, and we
- 23:16Speaker 1: looked at which ones are supposed to cleanly remove and stuff.
- 23:19Speaker 1: But she wanted to hang a lot of art on
- 23:21Speaker 1: the wall. And it won't stick. Oh longevity a scuff x,
- 23:27Speaker 1: it just it just won't. It releases over time. So
- 23:30Speaker 1: she's gone another direction. And so I say that was
- 23:33Speaker 1: a downside, But to me, I think it the alternative
- 23:39Speaker 1: is far worse. I don't want to be screeping these
- 23:41Speaker 1: things off and not be able to get them to remove.
- 23:44Speaker 2: It comes in what finishes.
- 23:46Speaker 3: A mat, which is a shiny mat. An eggshell sat
- 23:50Speaker 3: is a shiny mat. Most mats come between you know,
- 23:53Speaker 3: I would say probably four and five percent machine. This
- 23:56Speaker 3: is going to be more like eight to ten little.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Bit shinier for a map, but still.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Oh, the durability is off the chart.
- 24:06Speaker 2: So we've got a mate.
- 24:06Speaker 3: We've got an eggshell, eggshell, a satin and a sass
- 24:10Speaker 3: semi gloss.
- 24:11Speaker 1: One other thing just since we're talking about the sheines.
- 24:14Speaker 1: One of the interesting things you brought up when we
- 24:16Speaker 1: were talking about this off air is you had a
- 24:19Speaker 1: facility that had another product. That one was a competitor's product.
- 24:25Speaker 1: It was in a semi gloss and it wasn't holding
- 24:27Speaker 1: up as well. And they were able to not just
- 24:29Speaker 1: put scuff X on and get rid of the scuffs
- 24:33Speaker 1: and all of that. They also were able to go
- 24:35Speaker 1: to a matte finish, which hid so many more imperfections.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Yeah, the picture that the maintenance guy showed me, it
- 24:42Speaker 3: was from another facility other than his, one of his coworkers.
- 24:47Speaker 3: They were using a semi gloss from competitor and not
- 24:50Speaker 3: a problem other than it. Semi gloss is very shiny,
- 24:55Speaker 3: it's going to pick up every imperfection. And the walls
- 24:57Speaker 3: were older and they'd been damaged and repaired, damage and repaired.
- 25:01Speaker 3: You'll figure this is a senior housing facility that they
- 25:06Speaker 3: just look terrible with that semi gloss. You could see everything.
- 25:09Speaker 3: So they needed to get to a lower machine, but
- 25:11Speaker 3: they needed something durable. Well, here you go. That matt
- 25:14Speaker 3: in the scuff X is probably gonna be more scuff
- 25:17Speaker 3: resistant than that semigloss from the competitor. Not probably it is.
- 25:21Speaker 1: And you got the much nicer look.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, and it looks more uniform afterwards.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's really cool. What about price? How are
- 25:27Speaker 1: you shaken out? You don't have to throw numbers out
- 25:29Speaker 1: theories by people, but yeah, I mean we're to get
- 25:31Speaker 1: them in at a good price.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Yes, for the most part, what I see from the competition,
- 25:37Speaker 3: we're able to get them a much better product for
- 25:40Speaker 3: a very similar price.
- 25:42Speaker 2: So it's not like you're paying huge No.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Generally, when I tell them how much scuffack is going
- 25:46Speaker 3: to be, there somewhat surprised because they think it's going
- 25:48Speaker 3: to be a whole lot more.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's really is.
- 25:51Speaker 1: It's one of those things that you know, like you
- 25:54Speaker 1: said at the beginning, we've all been disappointed with promises.
- 25:57Speaker 3: That's typical sales bitch right.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Right, always is, and you feel bummed out about that.
- 26:03Speaker 1: But it's happened to me. This is one that when
- 26:06Speaker 1: you guys first came out and told us what it
- 26:08Speaker 1: would do. M I was already you know, once bit
- 26:11Speaker 1: and twice shy. I kind of think it's not going
- 26:12Speaker 1: to go nuts on this to like sample it and
- 26:14Speaker 1: see it, and what we saw was so ridiculously cool.
- 26:18Speaker 3: It is very dramatic.
- 26:19Speaker 2: It's like a parlor trick.
- 26:20Speaker 1: You know. When you whip out samples and show people,
- 26:23Speaker 1: they generally speaking think that it's all kind of if
- 26:27Speaker 1: they haven't heard about it or seen it, they think
- 26:29Speaker 1: it's a joke, not real until you show it to them,
- 26:32Speaker 1: and my experiences, they go from kind of looking around
- 26:35Speaker 1: and not really focusing on it to being like laser
- 26:38Speaker 1: focused on what is the trick here and how Then
- 26:40Speaker 1: they'll get the tool out of your hand and they're
- 26:42Speaker 1: trying to make those marks on the scuff x right.
- 26:45Speaker 3: So the demo is really key because everybody has heard
- 26:51Speaker 3: most of us have heard over promises on products that
- 26:53Speaker 3: we're about to buy. And so when I bring out
- 26:56Speaker 3: the demo board and I show them and then they
- 26:58Speaker 3: can use the tool themselves, see just how much more
- 27:01Speaker 3: durable it is, it's from there. It's it's very easy.
- 27:05Speaker 1: It applies beautifully. It's a single component product. You mix
- 27:09Speaker 1: parts with it.
- 27:09Speaker 3: It's not that expensive.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Haint at right prices out well, you've got all the finishes,
- 27:14Speaker 1: all the Benjamin War colors.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Thirty five hundred colors, and into one of the finishes
- 27:18Speaker 3: in custom matching.
- 27:19Speaker 1: It's definitely something to ask about next paint project, whether
- 27:23Speaker 1: you've got a facility or maybe your facility is just
- 27:26Speaker 1: your you know that mudroom that gets a lot of
- 27:29Speaker 1: a lot of use. Definitely checking the scuff X. We've
- 27:31Speaker 1: got it at all the Repcolite stores, stop out, ask
- 27:34Speaker 1: us about it and yeah, just start the conversation.
- 27:37Speaker 3: Sounds good, Thank you, thanks for being here. Appreciate it, Dan,
- 27:39Speaker 3: take care.
- 27:40Speaker 2: All right.
- 27:40Speaker 1: We've been working our way through different exposures rooms with
- 27:43Speaker 1: different exposures. We've covered north facing rooms, south facing rooms,
- 27:46Speaker 1: and the colors you would pick for those spaces so
- 27:49Speaker 1: you can have the most success. Now let's turn our
- 27:52Speaker 1: attention to east facing rooms and we're going to do
- 27:54Speaker 1: that right after this. This is home in progress where
- 27:58Speaker 1: the to do list is long, and that's all right.
- 28:01Speaker 1: We're not crabbing at you. We're not gonna yell at you.
- 28:03Speaker 1: That's how it is. It's how ours is too. It's
- 28:06Speaker 1: probably supported by Repcolite Paints and Benjamin More because home
- 28:09Speaker 1: projects are easier when you've got people you can trust.
- 28:14Speaker 2: And we're back.
- 28:14Speaker 1: You're listening to Home in Progress sponsored by repcolite paints
- 28:17Speaker 1: and Benjamin More And right now, let's talk about something
- 28:20Speaker 1: that's sometimes trickier than it seems. Choosing colors for an
- 28:23Speaker 1: east facing room, and fair warning, they can be a
- 28:26Speaker 1: bit of a challenge. Unlike north or south facing rooms,
- 28:29Speaker 1: which have fairly consistent lighting throughout the day, east facing
- 28:32Speaker 1: rooms kind of can have, you know, kind of like
- 28:35Speaker 1: a split personality thing going on. And here's what I mean.
- 28:38Speaker 1: If your windows face east, you're getting mourning sun. You know,
- 28:42Speaker 1: right away, early morning sun comes in, clean, fresh, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 1: it's slightly warm light, you know, with a soft yellow glow.
- 28:49Speaker 1: It's not the golden, you know, really really powerful light
- 28:52Speaker 1: that you get from west facing rooms in the afternoon,
- 28:55Speaker 1: but it's warm enough to bring to life soft whites, pastels,
- 28:58Speaker 1: things like that. And that quality of light really makes
- 29:01Speaker 1: the room feel open, It can make it feel uplifting,
- 29:04Speaker 1: It can infuse it with energy, especially in the early
- 29:07Speaker 1: part of the day. So that's early morning, but by
- 29:10Speaker 1: mid morning to noon, things start to shift a little bit.
- 29:14Speaker 1: That subtle warmth kind of fades out and the light
- 29:17Speaker 1: becomes a little bright, it becomes a little more neutral,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it becomes almost stark, and at this point, many lighter
- 29:24Speaker 1: colors begin to wash out. A warm cream that felt cozy,
- 29:28Speaker 1: for example, at seven in the morning might look nearly
- 29:31Speaker 1: white or even flat, you know, just flat in nature.
- 29:35Speaker 1: By lunchtime, it's just washed out. Then in the afternoon,
- 29:38Speaker 1: everything changes again. As the sun moves to the opposite
- 29:41Speaker 1: side of the house. The room gets dimmer, and the
- 29:43Speaker 1: light cools a little bit, you know, the quality of
- 29:46Speaker 1: the light cools a little bit, And by early evening
- 29:49Speaker 1: that light begins to take on a gray blue cast.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And that's when even a cheerful color can suddenly feel
- 29:54Speaker 1: cold or muddy or something like that. You know. I
- 29:57Speaker 1: run into this exact problem scenario. It turned out to
- 30:01Speaker 1: be a bit of a problem. Ran into it myself.
- 30:04Speaker 1: I had this buttery yellow that we had put in
- 30:07Speaker 1: a west facing space, and it was absolutely perfect for
- 30:11Speaker 1: that space. It was exactly what we wanted. It was rich,
- 30:13Speaker 1: it was sunny, you know, it was just so inviting,
- 30:16Speaker 1: so perfect. And I had left over paint from that project,
- 30:20Speaker 1: and I decided, I'm gonna sample it on the walls
- 30:23Speaker 1: in this east facing living room. And at that point
- 30:25Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking about the living room as being east facing.
- 30:28Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking about that bedroom that had the other
- 30:30Speaker 1: the same color in it as being west facing. It
- 30:33Speaker 1: was just the bedroom in the living room, you know.
- 30:34Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking about the exposure. So I put it
- 30:37Speaker 1: in there. And I did that early in the morning,
- 30:39Speaker 1: because that's how I roll, get up early, start working,
- 30:42Speaker 1: and then I crash in zonk by the afternoon. But anyway,
- 30:45Speaker 1: in the early morning, when I put it on.
- 30:47Speaker 2: It looked perfect. I thought I was brilliant.
- 30:50Speaker 1: But then later by evening, when I was waking from
- 30:53Speaker 1: my nap, I realized that that color looked weirdly green,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and it really felt off, did not look good. Same paint,
- 31:02Speaker 1: totally different feel from morning to evening. And that's a
- 31:05Speaker 1: perfect example of how much natural light really does shape
- 31:08Speaker 1: the colors that we live with. So all of that
- 31:10Speaker 1: can be going on in an east facing space. So
- 31:13Speaker 1: with that happening, how in the world do you choose
- 31:15Speaker 1: a color that's not going to mess with you throughout
- 31:18Speaker 1: the day. Well, first thing you got to do is
- 31:20Speaker 1: think about when you use the room the most. If
- 31:23Speaker 1: it's a morning space, you spend most of your morning
- 31:25Speaker 1: time in that room. Maybe it's a breakfast nook or
- 31:28Speaker 1: a bedroom. If that's the case, lean into the warmth
- 31:31Speaker 1: of that sunrise light that you're getting. So creamy white,
- 31:34Speaker 1: soft yellows, warm neutrals, they're all going to glow and
- 31:38Speaker 1: feel warm and cozy and all of that without feeling overpowering.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Even cooler tones like a pale green or a blue
- 31:45Speaker 1: green can feel balanced and fresh in that early light. Now,
- 31:48Speaker 1: if you're typically in the room later in the day,
- 31:51Speaker 1: when the light has begun to cool off, you're gonna
- 31:53Speaker 1: need something with some more saturation, more color to keep
- 31:57Speaker 1: it from washing out or from going dull. And this
- 32:01Speaker 1: is especially true for neutrals. You know, cool grays, grayses,
- 32:05Speaker 1: topes with too much gray and not enough undertone, all
- 32:08Speaker 1: of them can end up looking lifeless in the afternoon.
- 32:10Speaker 1: So if that's when you're largely spending time in this space,
- 32:13Speaker 1: you're going to want to adjust for that.
- 32:16Speaker 2: So if you are looking.
- 32:17Speaker 1: For a neutral, make sure that it's got a little
- 32:19Speaker 1: bit of color underneath, you know, color undertones to keep
- 32:22Speaker 1: it interesting through that mid day, you know, part of
- 32:25Speaker 1: the day, when that light really is intense and white
- 32:29Speaker 1: and clean. Now, if you use the room throughout the day,
- 32:31Speaker 1: what if that's the case, you know, you're kind of
- 32:33Speaker 1: there morning, you're there in the afternoon, you're there throughout
- 32:37Speaker 1: the day. Well, then pick the color that you like
- 32:38Speaker 1: best during the time that you're in the room the most. Right,
- 32:41Speaker 1: that's the best you can do. You've got to make
- 32:43Speaker 1: peace with the fact that it may shift a little
- 32:45Speaker 1: bit later or earlier in the day. As long as
- 32:48Speaker 1: it's not wildly off putting in the other half of
- 32:51Speaker 1: the day, you should be fine. You know, you don't
- 32:53Speaker 1: need perfection around the clock. We're not going to always
- 32:56Speaker 1: get that, you know, when we're working with natural lighting,
- 32:59Speaker 1: we're not going to perfection around the clock. You just
- 33:01Speaker 1: need something that stays within your comfort zone through the
- 33:04Speaker 1: whole day. Now, one more thing that makes a huge difference,
- 33:07Speaker 1: of course, is artificial lighting. In the afternoon, when the
- 33:10Speaker 1: natural light fades and the room goes cool, your artificial
- 33:12Speaker 1: lighting needs to step in and kind of do some
- 33:15Speaker 1: heavy lifting for you. And that doesn't mean just flipping
- 33:18Speaker 1: on a lamp and filling the room with light. It
- 33:20Speaker 1: means choosing the right kind of light bulb to use
- 33:23Speaker 1: in your space. A warm white light bulb in the
- 33:26Speaker 1: twenty seven hundred to three thousand Calvin range is usually
- 33:29Speaker 1: your best bet. You know, daylight corrected bulbs might sound
- 33:33Speaker 1: like a brilliant, great idea. Well, the thing is they
- 33:36Speaker 1: tend to mimic noon sun, which, like we talked about earlier,
- 33:39Speaker 1: it can be harsh and it can be stark, and
- 33:41Speaker 1: especially in a space that's already starting to lean cool,
- 33:44Speaker 1: So warm it up a little bit. That's usually going
- 33:46Speaker 1: to help you. It can change the entire mood of
- 33:48Speaker 1: that space. All right, Well, all that said, let's talk
- 33:51Speaker 1: about paint colors a little bit, and remember everything I
- 33:54Speaker 1: list is going to be in the show notes later,
- 33:56Speaker 1: so definitely look there and check it out, and also
- 33:59Speaker 1: check out our blog. I'll have another post about east
- 34:01Speaker 1: facing rooms, so you can get all these colors in
- 34:05Speaker 1: that regard. It's going to be easier than listening to
- 34:07Speaker 1: them and trying to remember them. If you're looking for
- 34:10Speaker 1: a fresh, airy look. If that's what you're after, then
- 34:13Speaker 1: warm whites are solid choice. So Benjamin Moore's white Dove,
- 34:16Speaker 1: that's classic. You know, it's creamy. It's a soft white
- 34:19Speaker 1: with just enough warmth to stay inviting all day. Simply White,
- 34:23Speaker 1: another Benjamin war color. It's got a subtle yellow undertone
- 34:26Speaker 1: that's going to keep it cheerful. If you want something
- 34:28Speaker 1: deeper and richer than those Navejo white, it's going to
- 34:31Speaker 1: give you some depth without getting muddy. Now, grays, let's
- 34:34Speaker 1: say you're looking for a gray. They're popular, but in
- 34:36Speaker 1: east facing rooms, cool grays can get icy, you know,
- 34:40Speaker 1: really fast, So go warmer. If you're going gray, Classic
- 34:44Speaker 1: Gray OC twenty three that's soft and warm, almost an
- 34:48Speaker 1: off white in bright light.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Balboa missed.
- 34:50Speaker 1: It's got a little bit of a hint of pink
- 34:52Speaker 1: that kind of keeps it elegant without clashing with the
- 34:54Speaker 1: changing light. Revere Pewter, you know, we see that color
- 34:57Speaker 1: used all the time. That's going to give you a warm,
- 34:59Speaker 1: grounded gray that adds depth without a lot of heaviness. Now,
- 35:02Speaker 1: if you're looking for a dependable neutral, bleaker beige, it's
- 35:06Speaker 1: got soft yellow undertones that will work in the morning
- 35:08Speaker 1: and it's going to hold up later wind's breath. It's
- 35:11Speaker 1: lighter with a sandy warmth. Now, if you really are
- 35:14Speaker 1: leaning towards wanting to have some color in the space,
- 35:16Speaker 1: we'll go for it. Because eastern facing light works really
- 35:19Speaker 1: well with pale greens, muted corals, blue greens just steer
- 35:24Speaker 1: clear of strong blues and strong purples because they tend
- 35:27Speaker 1: to feel a little bit cold or stark by late afternoon. Now,
- 35:30Speaker 1: one last thing with all of this, and I know
- 35:32Speaker 1: I threw a bazillion colors at you, the bigger idea
- 35:36Speaker 1: is just remember if you're dealing with an east facing room,
- 35:38Speaker 1: head to the website repco light dot com, find the
- 35:40Speaker 1: blog post or go back and catch this episode again
- 35:43Speaker 1: home and progress wherever you get your podcasts. Then you
- 35:46Speaker 1: can go through it a little more slowly. But one
- 35:49Speaker 1: last thing, don't forget about your trim and your ceilings.
- 35:51Speaker 1: A clean white like chantilly lace that's going to reflect
- 35:54Speaker 1: the light, it's going to lift the whole room, especially
- 35:56Speaker 1: in the afternoon. So that's something to think about for
- 36:00Speaker 1: those spaces. Bottom line, east facing rooms shift dramatically throughout
- 36:04Speaker 1: the day. That's the big takeaway, and because of that,
- 36:07Speaker 1: there's no one size fits all solution. But if you
- 36:09Speaker 1: think about timing, you know when you're in the room
- 36:11Speaker 1: most often, and you make sure you test your samples
- 36:14Speaker 1: in different lighting and pay attention to undertones, you can
- 36:18Speaker 1: absolutely find a color that works. If you need help
