- 0:22Speaker 2: And very much good morning to you. You're listening to
- 0:24Speaker 2: ask the expert WCCHS. The voice of Charles said, I'm
- 0:27Speaker 2: Deel Cooper Ross Ky here. Okay, yes, okay. We want
- 0:30Speaker 2: to make sure that voice that you hear welcoming into
- 0:32Speaker 2: the studio. I should have checked that before we turned
- 0:33Speaker 2: on the microphones. Ross Kirk is joining us this morning,
- 0:37Speaker 2: and he is the owner of Marco Foundation Repair, Marco
- 0:41Speaker 2: Concrete Lifting, and we're gonna be talking this morning about
- 0:44Speaker 2: his wonderful thirty. He's approaching his thirtieth year. This is
- 0:46Speaker 2: his thirtieth year in business that we're starting today, that
- 0:49Speaker 2: he's starting today, and we're going to learn a little
- 0:51Speaker 2: bit about Marco Concrete Lifting, the history there, exactly what
- 0:55Speaker 2: he specializes in and how he can help you out.
- 0:57Speaker 2: First of all, Ross, welcome back to the program. Thanks
- 0:59Speaker 2: for coming in, Thanks for coming in. We appreciate it.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Thank you very much. It's been a real pleasure.
- 1:04Speaker 2: And happy birthday to Marco Concrete Lifting. That's something else
- 1:08Speaker 2: is starting your thirtieth year today today, and I know
- 1:11Speaker 2: that you also have maybe a couple of grandkids you
- 1:13Speaker 2: want to shout out a birthday too.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, my grandson is ten years old today and my
- 1:18Speaker 3: granddaughter will be let me see seven years old tomorrow,
- 1:26Speaker 3: and just a big happy birthday to them. There such angels.
- 1:32Speaker 4: They're right in between my daughter's age, who is eight.
- 1:35Speaker 2: So I kind of know where you're coming from as
- 1:39Speaker 2: far as that goes, that's for sure. So happy birthday
- 1:41Speaker 2: to them as well as to you. And let's get
- 1:44Speaker 2: some information out there for folks. Marco Concrete Lifting been
- 1:47Speaker 2: in business since was it nineteen ninety six then that
- 1:49Speaker 2: you went in the business.
- 1:51Speaker 3: That's when I started. I incorporated at ninety seven.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Okay, and you've and it's been family owned and operated
- 1:57Speaker 2: ever since then. You've been You've punched the ticket and
- 2:00Speaker 2: taking the ride, man. I mean, I mean, this is
- 2:02Speaker 2: a thirty year journey that you've been on. And we'll
- 2:05Speaker 2: get into the services that Marco Concrete Lifting does a
- 2:08Speaker 2: little bit later on, but basically residential, commercial, industrial, which
- 2:12Speaker 2: is a big part of what you do as well.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So I mean, you have everything laid out there briefly,
- 2:18Speaker 2: We're going to start with your history just a little bit.
- 2:20Speaker 2: But before we get going in that, let's just give
- 2:23Speaker 2: folks a sketch of what it is that you do
- 2:25Speaker 2: at Marco Concrete.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Lifting more than anything in our biggest businesses foundation repair,
- 2:31Speaker 3: you know, putting, piling on heaticles, on stabilizing foundations. I
- 2:38Speaker 3: started out in the grouting business, you know, lifting sidewalks
- 2:41Speaker 3: and grouting sinkhole stuff like that, and then I got
- 2:46Speaker 3: into appearing and then heaticles and micropiles and just you know,
- 2:51Speaker 3: I went from there. But it's this has been good
- 2:56Speaker 3: to us. You know, I'm going to change my slogan too.
- 3:01Speaker 3: We know what we're doing.
- 3:03Speaker 2: I know, in this day and age, it's kind of
- 3:05Speaker 2: hard to make sure that you find that with your
- 3:08Speaker 2: contractors that you're working for. I mean sometimes that that's difficult,
- 3:11Speaker 2: and you do. You've, like I've said, you've taken the
- 3:13Speaker 2: whole ride. And that means that you've done everything from
- 3:16Speaker 2: my neighbors out not literally but a neighbor's house, just
- 3:19Speaker 2: a regular residential.
- 3:20Speaker 4: All the way up to abandoned coal mines. I mean,
- 3:23Speaker 4: you've done it all.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Yeah, And I've been the one I'm the only one
- 3:27Speaker 3: in the business in this area that is the owner
- 3:31Speaker 3: that did the work, did the estimating, worked on the tracks,
- 3:36Speaker 3: worked on the pumps, built the pumps. I mean, I'm
- 3:40Speaker 3: kind of hard to fool. I mean, there's some of
- 3:43Speaker 3: them I can't figure out. I I call engineers, you know.
- 3:46Speaker 2: But so anything from you you have a concrete foundation
- 3:52Speaker 2: issue around your house, all the way to if you
- 3:54Speaker 2: have a business or an industrial property of some sort,
- 3:58Speaker 2: that is that's what you help with. What is what
- 4:01Speaker 2: is one of the major first signs that folks can
- 4:03Speaker 2: see when they know that this is a Ross kirktod.
- 4:09Speaker 3: Well. Usually, I mean most of these companies that are
- 4:12Speaker 3: out here now and they pop up like you know,
- 4:15Speaker 3: new Grass, And the number one thing that we can
- 4:20Speaker 3: that we pride ourselves in is we can put a
- 4:24Speaker 3: we can put a house most of the time, not
- 4:27Speaker 3: all the time. We can put it back real close
- 4:30Speaker 3: to where it was. These other companies won't do that
- 4:33Speaker 3: because they don't have anybody that's been hands on for
- 4:37Speaker 3: thirty years. And I've still got employee. I've got employees
- 4:40Speaker 3: been with me twenty twenty five years, ten years, and well,
- 4:44Speaker 3: I mean, we do know what we're doing. I mean,
- 4:46Speaker 3: some of these other companies, I've seen some of their
- 4:48Speaker 3: work and I'm like, you've got to be kidding me.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Experience counts, an expertise counts, there's no question, and that's
- 4:54Speaker 2: why we're doing I asked the expert today, if you
- 4:56Speaker 2: have any questions, by the way, you're welcome to give
- 4:58Speaker 2: us a call three four five fifty to fifty eight.
- 4:59Speaker 2: You can also over any questions you have. The threes
- 5:01Speaker 2: are four nine three five five, zeros are were eight.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Threes are four nine, three five five zero zero eight.
- 5:06Speaker 2: So let's talk a little bit about from the span
- 5:08Speaker 2: from nineteen ninety six today we're talking about three years.
- 5:11Speaker 2: What's the first thing that hits you about that thirty
- 5:13Speaker 2: year period. Is it the change in the industry that
- 5:16Speaker 2: the industry really hasn't changed all that much?
- 5:18Speaker 3: Or how does it how the industry hasn't changed that
- 5:22Speaker 3: much except for people that are you know, new companies
- 5:25Speaker 3: popping up and saying, you know, they're professionals. Well, if
- 5:29Speaker 3: you're a professional the way, I understand that you have
- 5:32Speaker 3: to have a degree, and I don't have a degree.
- 5:35Speaker 3: I'm an expert, but I'm not a professional. And it's
- 5:38Speaker 3: changed to the point. Well, one thing is the cost
- 5:41Speaker 3: of it.
- 5:42Speaker 4: Yeah, sure, yeah, that's with anything around this type of thing.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Oh sure, yeah. And anytime you're involved in concrete and steel,
- 5:49Speaker 3: you're gonna you know, your cost is going up. But usually,
- 5:55Speaker 3: I mean ninety five percent of the time, if you
- 5:59Speaker 3: call less to do your work, you don't have to
- 6:01Speaker 3: call us back. And if you do call us back,
- 6:04Speaker 3: we know more than likely it's more work. It's not
- 6:08Speaker 3: what we did, it's where we stopped. That's that's the
- 6:11Speaker 3: biggest thing. But I mean, it's kind of hard to
- 6:15Speaker 3: tell that we've been there doing a job simply because
- 6:17Speaker 3: everything's underground, right, yeah, right, and there's no way to
- 6:20Speaker 3: see it. But I'd say seventy percent of our business now,
- 6:26Speaker 3: after spending a couple of million dollars in advertising over
- 6:29Speaker 3: the years, most of our businesses word of mouth, right,
- 6:32Speaker 3: word of mouth. We've got a very good name, and
- 6:35Speaker 3: as long as I'm running, we're going to keep it
- 6:37Speaker 3: that way.
- 6:38Speaker 2: Take me back to nineteen ninety six again just a
- 6:40Speaker 2: little bit, because we've done this show a little bit before.
- 6:42Speaker 2: You and I talked to them here before, and I
- 6:44Speaker 2: always find sort of your origin story, you know, spider Man, Superman.
- 6:48Speaker 2: They all have origin stories, and you have your origin
- 6:50Speaker 2: story as well as far as how you got inspired
- 6:52Speaker 2: to start Marco Concrete Lifting and what really got you
- 6:55Speaker 2: into this.
- 6:55Speaker 4: You were really drawn to the industry.
- 6:58Speaker 3: I was once I realized that's what it was, you know.
- 7:01Speaker 3: I used to go to a friend of mine's house
- 7:03Speaker 3: and he had this truck out there and it was nasty.
- 7:05Speaker 3: And then walked around and I said, what does that
- 7:07Speaker 3: thing do? He said, it raises concrete. I said, raise
- 7:12Speaker 3: his concrete. I said, I've been raising kids, but let
- 7:17Speaker 3: me see what this thing does. And he was doing
- 7:20Speaker 3: his brother's driveway and he drew some holes and pumped
- 7:24Speaker 3: that thing right up and bam. Right then that's when
- 7:27Speaker 3: the light went off, and we built a truck. And
- 7:35Speaker 3: I think it was three weeks after I incorporated. He
- 7:39Speaker 3: moved away with what's now his wife and left me there.
- 7:43Speaker 3: And I've been in the car business. I didn't know
- 7:45Speaker 3: nothing about growling. I didn't know, you know, but that's
- 7:48Speaker 3: how I learned. And then I'd go to other big
- 7:52Speaker 3: cities and find out where there was. Back then, he
- 7:55Speaker 3: had yellow pages. That's how I learned to do my
- 7:57Speaker 3: ads and I'd find out where they were and go
- 8:00Speaker 3: watch them through binoculars in anne marked car because back
- 8:04Speaker 3: when it kills me. Back when I started, I had
- 8:08Speaker 3: Marco concrete tattooed or everything but the kids, and I'd
- 8:13Speaker 3: go rent a car and I'd go around and watch
- 8:15Speaker 3: through binocas and think, huh, so that's how you do it.
- 8:20Speaker 2: I used to do a show called Business Matters. I
- 8:23Speaker 2: owned some small businesses myself in the past, and I
- 8:25Speaker 2: used to do a show that call called Business Manners.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I've interviewed hundreds of small business owners in my life.
- 8:30Speaker 2: I've never known anybody that that did a stakeout to.
- 8:34Speaker 4: Figure out how to do their business.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Man that is, that is some hardcore dedication on trying
- 8:38Speaker 2: to figure things out.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Well. When I started, there was one other company that
- 8:43Speaker 3: put helicals in, and there was one other company that
- 8:46Speaker 3: put a few push piers in a year, but nobody
- 8:49Speaker 3: advertised it. I mean, that was the first one to
- 8:52Speaker 3: ever advertise foundation repair in West Virginia. And I started
- 8:56Speaker 3: right here with this station. And I remember I came
- 9:00Speaker 3: in here and I said, I forget the guy's name.
- 9:03Speaker 3: I've had a little bit of health issues this year,
- 9:05Speaker 3: and I'm not rid of my memory is not all there.
- 9:08Speaker 3: He said, what's your budget. I said six hundred dollars.
- 9:11Speaker 3: He said, well, six hundred dollars a month is pretty
- 9:14Speaker 3: good budget. I said, no, that's six hundred a year.
- 9:18Speaker 3: But yeah, I knew advertising from working at Tom Peton.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I mean, my Lord Dame, they advertised like crazy for years.
- 9:27Speaker 3: And then I just, you know, saw my friend have
- 9:31Speaker 3: this machine and I said, well, you know, what's that do?
- 9:33Speaker 3: Then he showed me in it and just kicked in.
- 9:35Speaker 3: After that, I was so inspired to get into this
- 9:41Speaker 3: full blast and in one thing that I do another
- 9:45Speaker 3: and another another, and then of course you have you know,
- 9:48Speaker 3: there's two months out of the year that your business
- 9:53Speaker 3: kind of dips a little bit, and that's July and December,
- 9:57Speaker 3: because you're not going to compete with Myrtle Beach and
- 9:59Speaker 3: Santa Claus, right, that's just not gonna happen.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, not gonna happen around here. No, do you remember
- 10:06Speaker 2: your first client, the first pen client that you had.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Yes, The very first job that I ever did as
- 10:17Speaker 3: a company was a little sidewalk up in South Hills
- 10:23Speaker 3: and my partner's driving the truck up there and it's
- 10:27Speaker 3: full of smoke. It blew up on the way because
- 10:29Speaker 3: he used ether on it and I tell him not to.
- 10:32Speaker 3: And then my first job other than that, but before
- 10:35Speaker 3: it was my company was the guy names canall Scales.
- 10:39Speaker 3: He's passed since then. Jim Bradbury and I got called
- 10:44Speaker 3: to that same house last year to look at another issue.
- 10:48Speaker 3: And that little sidewalk that we raised is still there
- 10:51Speaker 3: after twenty thirty years, because that was in ninety six
- 10:56Speaker 3: or yeah, ninety six. And I said that I've done.
- 11:00Speaker 3: That's my first job I ever did right there, And.
- 11:03Speaker 4: That's something else. Yeah, that's something else. What was the
- 11:06Speaker 4: uh you know you did?
- 11:08Speaker 2: You did your stakeouts of other businesses and you were
- 11:10Speaker 2: taking notes and figuring things out. But then you had
- 11:12Speaker 2: to come back and really flourish your business in West Virginia,
- 11:16Speaker 2: which is different from other areas well. Yeah, what made
- 11:18Speaker 2: West Virginia a bit of a challenge that you had
- 11:20Speaker 2: to conquer?
- 11:21Speaker 3: Mountains?
- 11:22Speaker 2: Yeah that's the easy one, isn't it when it comes
- 11:25Speaker 2: to this, right.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I learned a lot in Cincinnati. I learned a lot
- 11:28Speaker 3: in Saint Louis, and you know, they're a lot flatter,
- 11:33Speaker 3: but the mountains over here, the clay over here. Everybody
- 11:38Speaker 3: thinks that, you know, when it rains, your businesses you
- 11:41Speaker 3: know booming. You know, when it rains, my business is
- 11:43Speaker 3: terrible because we have expansive clay in this valley. So
- 11:48Speaker 3: during a drought, you know, it's just like I explained
- 11:51Speaker 3: a lot of times, I explained it to housewives, so
- 11:55Speaker 3: that's usually who I see first. It's a difference in
- 11:57Speaker 3: breaddough and flour. You know, you take water out of
- 12:00Speaker 3: bread dough, you've got flour h and flower won't hold
- 12:04Speaker 3: up night. And bread doughs a little more, you know,
- 12:08Speaker 3: it's it has a little more compressive strength than flower.
- 12:15Speaker 3: And that's you know, one of the things that you know,
- 12:19Speaker 3: we kind of don't hope for. But it's always a
- 12:22Speaker 3: better year when it's dry from August all the way
- 12:26Speaker 3: up to December. And three years ago we did a
- 12:31Speaker 3: job when we had that big drought, and we booked
- 12:36Speaker 3: this job in November, and I said, I'll guarantee you
- 12:40Speaker 3: the day we start, it's going to start raining. And
- 12:45Speaker 3: the day after we started it rained from then until May.
- 12:52Speaker 2: You can always get on the mother nature stepping in cancer.
- 12:55Speaker 2: When those things happen.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Yeah, it's ross.
- 12:57Speaker 2: Correct that you're listening to this morning. He's the only
- 13:00Speaker 2: a Foster foundation or he's the owner of Marko. Oh
- 13:03Speaker 2: my goodness. He is the owner of Marco Concrete Lifting.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Marco Concrete Lifting been in business for thirty years thirty
- 13:09Speaker 2: years since nineteen ninety six. And Ross comes on our
- 13:12Speaker 2: on our airways every year and shares a little bit
- 13:14Speaker 2: about his story and the type of business he's been doing.
- 13:16Speaker 2: One thing that we haven't talked a lot about in
- 13:18Speaker 2: the past, and you may not do a ton of
- 13:19Speaker 2: this anymore, but I was really interested in some of
- 13:22Speaker 2: the stuff that you did around mine grouting and augur
- 13:24Speaker 2: mind grouting and stuff like that. Do you do much
- 13:26Speaker 2: of that work anymore? That was that was like some
- 13:28Speaker 2: of your earlier work.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, well, I know it's not as you know,
- 13:32Speaker 3: coal mining, not as many places anymore that you have
- 13:34Speaker 3: to do it. Coal mining is not what it was.
- 13:36Speaker 3: You know, it got it runs in cycles, i'd say,
- 13:40Speaker 3: in another cycle, will come back here, you know a
- 13:43Speaker 3: few years because they had died in eighth nine. Coal
- 13:46Speaker 3: coal mining was just thrown out because of you know
- 13:51Speaker 3: all the you know, pollution they say in the environment
- 13:56Speaker 3: and all that stuff. So but still I mean, we
- 13:59Speaker 3: got enough Cole and Boone County to last West Virginia
- 14:04Speaker 3: for a couple hundred years, and you know, it'll come
- 14:08Speaker 3: around again. I don't know if I'll be out doing
- 14:10Speaker 3: it anymore. But that was some of the you know,
- 14:15Speaker 3: the the bigger jobs they were easier to hire people for,
- 14:22Speaker 3: but all were grouting. I mean, I learned grouting from
- 14:26Speaker 3: a buddy of mine in Georgia, and the first underground
- 14:31Speaker 3: grouting job I did was Toyota down in buff Buffalo,
- 14:34Speaker 3: I think wherever it is, and that stuff just came
- 14:38Speaker 3: natural to me and learned how to do it in
- 14:40Speaker 3: one job, done it ever since.
- 14:42Speaker 2: And although there's not a lot of that because of
- 14:44Speaker 2: the industry and there not been as many opportunities that
- 14:48Speaker 2: still experience that you have in your past, it allows
- 14:50Speaker 2: you to incorporate that into things that you see now.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And although you may not have that particular situation, you've
- 14:56Speaker 2: learned a lot during those times, in very unique situations
- 14:59Speaker 2: that not a lot of peop people have experience with,
- 15:01Speaker 2: So you're able to extrapolate that into what you're doing
- 15:03Speaker 2: now more commonly, which is really a leg up in
- 15:06Speaker 2: a lot of situations because not a lot of people
- 15:08Speaker 2: have that type of experience.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Well, we're looking at what we've been looking at a
- 15:11Speaker 3: job down in Huntington and we'll know here I think
- 15:14Speaker 3: next month that it was a it's called compaction grouting.
- 15:20Speaker 3: And we're inside of this big bolt plant with a
- 15:26Speaker 3: drill rig drilling down thirty feet as we had an
- 15:29Speaker 3: engineer come in and drill it and look at it
- 15:31Speaker 3: and everything, and we've I think it's going to be
- 15:35Speaker 3: anywhere between I think five hundred and a thousand yards
- 15:38Speaker 3: of concrete that we have to pump thirty feet down,
- 15:42Speaker 3: pull up your your drill drilling apparatus and pull it
- 15:46Speaker 3: up a couple of feet and pump some more. And
- 15:47Speaker 3: you have to know, you have to know what that
- 15:50Speaker 3: groud's doing thirty feet underground. And that's an art. You
- 15:54Speaker 3: can't go to school and learn that or read it
- 15:56Speaker 3: out of a book. It's just something that you have
- 15:58Speaker 3: to be taught and you have to know how to
- 16:00Speaker 3: do it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: That's great information as always from Ross. Kirk's with us
- 16:04Speaker 2: this morning from Marco Concrete Lifting, and we're having a
- 16:07Speaker 2: great conversation about his history thirty years in the business.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Taking your phone calls and text I'll tech check check
- 16:12Speaker 2: that text line coming up here in just a second.
- 16:14Speaker 2: But when it comes to the type of work it
- 16:18Speaker 2: is that you're doing. And we've talked about your experience
- 16:20Speaker 2: thirty years, different things that you've done from the industrial
- 16:22Speaker 2: capacity and everything else. What is the most common thing
- 16:25Speaker 2: that you see now that you that that marco concrete
- 16:28Speaker 2: lifting goes to work one? What type of work is
- 16:30Speaker 2: it that you most commonly see that folks call on before.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Residential foundation settlement and residential flat work settlement.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Well, and and for these types of and and that's
- 16:42Speaker 2: extra and that's relatively common. And what a lot of
- 16:44Speaker 2: people wonder when they get to that point is what
- 16:47Speaker 2: did I do wrong? Could I have done something to
- 16:49Speaker 2: prevent this? And and some of those situations, are there
- 16:53Speaker 2: things that homeowners are doing wrong? And in some of
- 16:56Speaker 2: those situations, is it just mother nature?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Well, a lot of it's mother nature, some of it's
- 17:03Speaker 3: the way it was built. But the number one thing
- 17:06Speaker 3: you can do when it's when it's dry outside like
- 17:10Speaker 3: August September is uh, you know, just put a sprinkle
- 17:14Speaker 3: around your house, keep your dirt around your foundation. Wet
- 17:20Speaker 3: not I don't mean flood, keep it damp because that
- 17:23Speaker 3: way it will stay expanded, it will stay I don't
- 17:27Speaker 3: know what the word it is I'm looking for, but
- 17:30Speaker 3: it will. It will very much keep your house in place.
- 17:34Speaker 3: And you know, my when I first started saying this,
- 17:37Speaker 3: you know, water your foundation, water your house, everybody would
- 17:41Speaker 3: laugh at me. But in Texas, if you don't, you
- 17:44Speaker 3: lose your insurance in certain counties.
- 17:46Speaker 4: Is that right?
- 17:47Speaker 3: Oh yeah, you know that your insurance requires you to
- 17:50Speaker 3: put a soccer hose around your house, runt a little
- 17:53Speaker 3: bit at night, keep your soil damp. But no dry
- 17:57Speaker 3: soil is the depth of the stuff. I mean, that's
- 18:02Speaker 3: you know that one year we I remember one year
- 18:05Speaker 3: it was so dry that we the day after Labor
- 18:08Speaker 3: Day because that's when all the kids are, you know,
- 18:11Speaker 3: gone to school and all that, or it used to be.
- 18:14Speaker 3: I remember, we've got twenty one leads in one day. Wow, yeah,
- 18:19Speaker 3: one day.
- 18:20Speaker 4: That's that's a lot for.
- 18:22Speaker 3: One that's a lot. Yeah. That gave us enough work.
- 18:25Speaker 3: So Thanksgiving, let's do this.
- 18:28Speaker 2: We're going to take our break right now. When we
- 18:30Speaker 2: come back, we still have partably plainy more we can

- 18:34Speaker 2: into the specific the specifics of the type of work
- 18:36Speaker 2: that you do, how you can really help out the
- 18:39Speaker 2: homeowner or the business owner, whoever it might be out there.
- 18:42Speaker 2: And I'll throw a couple of different situations at you
- 18:44Speaker 2: and see and see what folks thinks.
- 18:46Speaker 3: See if I can answer me.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you can, but want to make sure
- 18:49Speaker 2: that folks understand exactly the scope of the work. And
- 18:51Speaker 2: if you have questions as well out there, you're welcome

- 20:39Speaker 2: the Voice of Charles and the expert we have in
- 20:41Speaker 2: studio this morning. He comes in once a year. It's
- 20:43Speaker 2: like Santa Claus. Ross Kirk is here with us this morning,
- 20:45Speaker 2: and we're talking about how you can talk about foundation
- 20:49Speaker 2: repairs and what Ross does is to help out with
- 20:53Speaker 2: that and you have let's talk a little bit about
- 20:56Speaker 2: your systems that you use for repairs when people have
- 20:59Speaker 2: foundation problems, when they have basement problems, and things along
- 21:02Speaker 2: those lines.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Because you can go to your website.
- 21:04Speaker 2: You see the whole list of services that you provide
- 21:07Speaker 2: and it's and it's quite robust, but brass Tacks is
- 21:10Speaker 2: basically people's homes.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Absolutely. That's even when the coal business was booming, I
- 21:15Speaker 3: would and I was almost traded, jump completely into the
- 21:19Speaker 3: coal business. And a guy from up in the Fairmunt area,
- 21:23Speaker 3: he said, don't don't chase the coal business because it's
- 21:27Speaker 3: going to have ups and downs. It'll be booming and
- 21:29Speaker 3: it'll go out. So I always kept the residential business
- 21:32Speaker 3: because that's how I learned to start with and it
- 21:36Speaker 3: it did. Uh, it's been good to us. It really
- 21:39Speaker 3: has I mean, there's a lot of jobs. I won't
- 21:41Speaker 3: take number one. You get to a point where you
- 21:46Speaker 3: know it's a squeeze worth the juice. And you know,
- 21:48Speaker 3: I got looked at one job it was like seventy
- 21:51Speaker 3: five thousand dollars to save garage and I and then
- 21:54Speaker 3: I got to think, well, I will be down for
- 21:56Speaker 3: a month doing this one because it was horrible. I said,
- 21:59Speaker 3: I just you know, I'm going to pass on this.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I don't want to do it. But ninety well eighty
- 22:06Speaker 3: percent of what we see we can fix and where
- 22:11Speaker 3: and I instill this. If I can't fix it, I
- 22:15Speaker 3: want to tell you I can't fix it. And if
- 22:18Speaker 3: you need an engineer, I give you a list of engineers.
- 22:21Speaker 3: But I'm not going to jump on a job like
- 22:23Speaker 3: a lot of these companies. These kids are out there
- 22:25Speaker 3: selling this stuff. Oh yeah, wing fix the wing fixed,
- 22:27Speaker 3: Wing fix it. And eventually I got to come back
- 22:30Speaker 3: and I, oh lord.
- 22:32Speaker 2: I want to explore that just a little bit. First
- 22:33Speaker 2: of all, after thirty years of being in business, what's
- 22:35Speaker 2: something and with foundation problems at home owners consistently get
- 22:39Speaker 2: wrong and don't catch early enough. Is there some telltale
- 22:42Speaker 2: signs that folks should be aware.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Of well cracking and sheet rock cracking and brick windows sticking,
- 22:49Speaker 3: you know, the normal thing. And then then you'll get
- 22:52Speaker 3: then it'll rain and actually lift itself just enough to
- 22:58Speaker 3: whet the doors, quit stick anything. Ill. I put it
- 23:00Speaker 3: off another year, but once the sooner you call me
- 23:05Speaker 3: the cheaper, it's going to be on you. I mean
- 23:08Speaker 3: we're expensive, you know, that's just how it is. We
- 23:13Speaker 3: do good work. We know what we're doing. We don't
- 23:16Speaker 3: have to guess at it. And if we can't do it,
- 23:19Speaker 3: we'll tell you we can't do it, and he's rebuilt.
- 23:23Speaker 3: But if I can't figure it out, I'll say, well, here,
- 23:25Speaker 3: call an engineer. I know this house is doing something,
- 23:30Speaker 3: but I'm not one hundred percent sure what it's doing right.
- 23:34Speaker 3: I mean, I can fix it, but I'm want to
- 23:36Speaker 3: you know, I'm going to cover myself. I'm want to
- 23:39Speaker 3: do It's going to cost you a whole lot more
- 23:41Speaker 3: if I figured out. So you may want to have
- 23:44Speaker 3: an engineer come in and tell me where to spend
- 23:46Speaker 3: your money, because I'm not. I'm just not. I'm very ethical.
- 23:51Speaker 3: I'm not going to be one of those guys and says,
- 23:53Speaker 3: oh yeah, we can do this. Yeah, yeah, we can
- 23:55Speaker 3: do that. Well, is it's going to go back perfect
- 23:58Speaker 3: and blah blah blah and all that. That's not the
- 24:00Speaker 3: way it worked.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Bear with me here for a minute as I try
- 24:03Speaker 2: to deploy an analogy, because you talked a minute about
- 24:05Speaker 2: people going around trying to sell quick fixes, and I
- 24:07Speaker 2: remember some years ago, and there's been some back and
- 24:09Speaker 2: forth on this, but there was a big push some
- 24:11Speaker 2: years ago to try to keep pharmaceutical reps out of
- 24:14Speaker 2: the back of doctor's office, or to limit to the
- 24:16Speaker 2: amount of stuff that they can bring, because they always
- 24:18Speaker 2: bring the shiniest new product, the newest drug, the newest procedure,
- 24:21Speaker 2: whatever it is. And then you might even get a
- 24:23Speaker 2: bonus if you start subscribing this medicine over this medicine,
- 24:27Speaker 2: or you get some of this for free, or you
- 24:29Speaker 2: get these little trip to a conference that's in a
- 24:32Speaker 2: place like Hawaii or something. You know, I mean, suddenly
- 24:36Speaker 2: something that you've been prescribing. And I'm not saying that
- 24:38Speaker 2: this happens super commonly, but this is a problem that
- 24:41Speaker 2: was identified at one point in time a medicine maybe
- 24:43Speaker 2: you were prescribing perfectly fine for years and years and
- 24:46Speaker 2: years you start subbing that the other medicine in because
- 24:48Speaker 2: it's supposed to do the same things. And hey, this
- 24:50Speaker 2: other company comes in and takes you to launch everyone.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Whatever it might be, whatever the reasons are for it.
- 24:55Speaker 3: They call that exactly.
- 24:57Speaker 2: But what I was amazed to discuss is that is
- 25:01Speaker 2: that may be not amazed, but that really works across
- 25:04Speaker 2: many industries. Where industries there'll be the hot product, the
- 25:08Speaker 2: hot procedure that's going on, or maybe there's a third
- 25:11Speaker 2: party that's going around the contractors and selling their newest
- 25:14Speaker 2: gizmo or gadget or whatever it is. The problem with
- 25:16Speaker 2: that is is one size doesn't fit all. One band
- 25:19Speaker 2: aid doesn't cover every wound. And sometimes when you talk
- 25:22Speaker 2: about people going out trying to sell quick fixes and
- 25:24Speaker 2: things along those lines, they have their product in a box,
- 25:28Speaker 2: in a mind, and they try to fit that product
- 25:30Speaker 2: on every single problem that's out there as their quick fix.
- 25:34Speaker 2: And I know, from a professional like you, that's got
- 25:36Speaker 2: to drive you nuts when you see people that unfortunately
- 25:39Speaker 2: fall for that, and you've got to come in behind
- 25:41Speaker 2: and clean some of this stuff up.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I've been on jobs before, kind of undercover, you know,
- 25:45Speaker 3: with an unmarked car while they're talking.
- 25:47Speaker 4: There, they are undercover again while there, while.
- 25:51Speaker 3: They're talking, you know, some of these other companies are
- 25:53Speaker 3: actually saying, well, you know, we got four thousand PSI
- 25:56Speaker 3: on your porch, on each pier. And I'm going, you
- 26:00Speaker 3: can't get four thousand ps I on't appear in your
- 26:02Speaker 3: house in one story house. And I'm just looking and
- 26:06Speaker 3: thinking then, and this was really a specific job that
- 26:13Speaker 3: I had been to and I'd lifted just the porch
- 26:16Speaker 3: of you know, the roof, and I put shims under
- 26:20Speaker 3: the post. Well, this company comes in and puts or
- 26:25Speaker 3: six peers on this little teeny porch Doun, Devonshire, and
- 26:32Speaker 3: they weren't happy with it. The people weren't happy with it,
- 26:35Speaker 3: and they wouldn't pay them. And the ho A guy said,
- 26:39Speaker 3: can you come down here and listen to this? I
- 26:41Speaker 3: said sure, So I show up. They don't know who
- 26:43Speaker 3: I am, and uh, my shims. I put two three
- 26:46Speaker 3: quarter inch shims under each post because they didn't have
- 26:49Speaker 3: the money to pull the porch up at the time.
- 26:52Speaker 3: And they said, well, we lifted it about an inch
- 26:57Speaker 3: and and my shit, ply with the shims are still
- 27:00Speaker 3: under the porch post. I said, you didn't I put
- 27:05Speaker 3: those under it there three years ago to buy them
- 27:07Speaker 3: a little bit of time. You know, if you're going
- 27:09Speaker 3: to lift this porch, you're gonna have to lift the
- 27:12Speaker 3: roof up just a little bit to get these shims
- 27:15Speaker 3: off from under the post. Then bring the concrete porch
- 27:18Speaker 3: up under the post. And this guy that was there
- 27:23Speaker 3: for one of these other pop up companies, he said, well,
- 27:26Speaker 3: we got four thousand psil on. I said, if you
- 27:30Speaker 3: put four thousand ps I on one piling, you'd you
- 27:34Speaker 3: flip this house over, you know, if you take it.
- 27:37Speaker 3: But it's just I mean, they're coming out with all.
- 27:40Speaker 3: We got a system that tests the pressure on your wall,
- 27:43Speaker 3: and we've got this special foam grout, and foam grout
- 27:48Speaker 3: does have its place. But I still got the same
- 27:52Speaker 3: truck I had ninety six. I still use the same
- 27:56Speaker 3: exact same foundation peering system as I used, and now
- 28:01Speaker 3: start at ninety nine, everything's the same. We adjust it
- 28:07Speaker 3: differently and we find out how to make it work
- 28:10Speaker 3: where normally, you know, nobody knows how to make it work.
- 28:15Speaker 3: And you know, after after thirty years, man, you learn
- 28:19Speaker 3: a lot.
- 28:21Speaker 2: You learn a lot, and that kind of plays into you.
- 28:24Speaker 2: You've mentioned this several times. I just wanted to highlight
- 28:26Speaker 2: it just a little bit with your thirty years of experience.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And also you really put a lot of stake, a
- 28:32Speaker 2: lot on your you say, word of mouth is your
- 28:34Speaker 2: most prolific form of advertising, So your reputation means a
- 28:39Speaker 2: lot to you. So for you doing the right thing
- 28:42Speaker 2: for the customer, the client, that always takes precedence because
- 28:47Speaker 2: you have to have that client to I mean, frankly,
- 28:50Speaker 2: you need that word of mouth. You want to make
- 28:52Speaker 2: sure that you take care of that person and each
- 28:53Speaker 2: person that comes to you for that. So you're not
- 28:55Speaker 2: going to try to think of a different way to
- 28:58Speaker 2: do something if it's expensive, and it's expensive, then they
- 29:01Speaker 2: have to decide if they're going to do it. You're
- 29:02Speaker 2: not going to try to short change something just to
- 29:04Speaker 2: make a quote unquote sell.
- 29:06Speaker 3: No, I've never been like that, never will be, and
- 29:10Speaker 3: I've told people before, you know. I went down to
- 29:13Speaker 3: Huntingson one time. This lady was crying. She said, I
- 29:15Speaker 3: just had this company come in and it's gonna cost
- 29:17Speaker 3: me thirty grand to fix my house. My husband just
- 29:20Speaker 3: got transferred, we got to move. I said, let me
- 29:23Speaker 3: look at it, and I went around that house, and
- 29:26Speaker 3: I could not find I couldn't find a place around
- 29:30Speaker 3: that house that I could in good faith take a
- 29:34Speaker 3: dollar from that lady. I said, ma'am, there's not a
- 29:37Speaker 3: thing wrong with this house. Wow. And that wasn't it
- 29:40Speaker 3: that I said, I can't spend a dollar of your money.
- 29:43Speaker 3: And she's, you know, wanting to hug me, thank you,
- 29:47Speaker 3: And I said, oh the way, your house is fine,
- 29:51Speaker 3: and just enjoy it. Sell it. It's going to pass inspects.
- 29:53Speaker 3: And it did, and they got transferred somewhere else. But no,
- 29:57Speaker 3: a lot of times I look at some of these
- 30:00Speaker 3: jobs and I got drill rigs, and I know how
- 30:02Speaker 3: to put piling in, and I drilled piling and like
- 30:06Speaker 3: like South Hills, we just did a job that everybody
- 30:09Speaker 3: bid healicals. Well, once we got up there and started
- 30:12Speaker 3: to put a heathical in, it went down about two
- 30:14Speaker 3: feet and hit solid rock. So I brought my dreol
- 30:19Speaker 3: rig in there and I drew micropiles down and then
- 30:22Speaker 3: set the brackets and the post on that and that
- 30:26Speaker 3: house will never budge. And I couldn't lift it, but
- 30:30Speaker 3: it'll never budge. And they were like the people that
- 30:34Speaker 3: in the house are like, Wow, where'd you learn how
- 30:36Speaker 3: to do this? I said, well, the first few I
- 30:39Speaker 3: did weren't quite just good, but that was fifteen years ago.
- 30:43Speaker 4: But still it's like a coach learning multiple offensive systems.
- 30:46Speaker 4: You know you have.
- 30:48Speaker 2: If you need to go to the off formation to
- 30:49Speaker 2: fix a to fix a to fix a property, you can.
- 30:51Speaker 2: If you need to mix in a little West Coast offense,
- 30:53Speaker 2: you can do that as well, a little running shoot
- 30:55Speaker 2: whatever it is.
- 30:56Speaker 3: You know it all now, if I got a pass
- 30:57Speaker 3: or I got to run or back up and pine.
- 31:03Speaker 4: You know how to do all of those things.
- 31:04Speaker 2: And I just think it's important that you take the
- 31:06Speaker 2: client and your customer's expectation and their experience first and foremost,
- 31:11Speaker 2: because that's really what you're there to to bridge the gap.
- 31:14Speaker 3: And a lot of times I tell a customer, I said,
- 31:16Speaker 3: I can lift up your driveway and I can fix it,
- 31:20Speaker 3: but trust me when I tell you, it's not going
- 31:22Speaker 3: to look like what I know it's going to look like,
- 31:25Speaker 3: and what you're hoping it looks like is way way apart.
- 31:29Speaker 3: So i'd rather, you know, have somebody's come in and
- 31:32Speaker 3: report it, because what you're expecting and what I know
- 31:36Speaker 3: it's going to look like is two different things, and
- 31:38Speaker 3: I don't want you to be disappointed.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Are there things that a home owner should exhaust before
- 31:42Speaker 2: they call you, Like if they have concerns about a
- 31:45Speaker 2: door that's been sticking for a while, maybe they're getting
- 31:47Speaker 2: some moisture in their basement or whatever. It might be
- 31:49Speaker 2: a crack along their foundation or something. Should they just
- 31:53Speaker 2: call you right away and a look at this.
- 31:56Speaker 3: The longer you wait, the more expensive it gets. And
- 32:01Speaker 3: after you've been in a business twenty five years, I'm
- 32:03Speaker 3: considered now an expert.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Absolutely, you're on the show.
- 32:08Speaker 3: Well I don't know, okay, but no, I'm allowed to
- 32:11Speaker 3: testify in court now as an expert, not a professional.
- 32:15Speaker 3: There's a big difference. Professional has a degree and an
- 32:19Speaker 3: expert has experience. And a lot of times when I
- 32:22Speaker 3: work with engineers that have had their feet dirty, I
- 32:25Speaker 3: love them because they've had to work and go to school.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Yeah right, they have the perspective of.
- 32:31Speaker 2: It, right.
- 32:31Speaker 3: Yeah, But some of them never had their hands dirty
- 32:33Speaker 3: and come out and tell me I had one child.
- 32:35Speaker 3: One time an engineer called me because I couldn't figure
- 32:37Speaker 3: it out. It was down Huntington and the first day
- 32:41Speaker 3: he was all ears. The second day he's telling me
- 32:45Speaker 3: what I should do, and the third day he was
- 32:47Speaker 3: telling me how to do what I do. And the
- 32:49Speaker 3: first time he'd seen a grouting job was three days before.
- 32:54Speaker 4: Yeah, you wonder about that stuff sometimes.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I said, that's not the way it works, sir, that's
- 32:58Speaker 3: not the way it works. And he's trying to figure
- 33:00Speaker 3: your stuff, you know, on paper on I said, don't
- 33:02Speaker 3: work that way. You know, you get it wrong. But
- 33:06Speaker 3: you know, there's a lot of there's you know, a
- 33:09Speaker 3: lot of trial and errors to this job.
- 33:11Speaker 4: There was.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I mean, it's just like second nature now.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Right, That's what I mean. You kind of blew out
- 33:17Speaker 2: all the trial and era after thirty years. That's part
- 33:19Speaker 2: of where the experience comes into play.
- 33:21Speaker 3: At well, the people say, well this, you know, people
- 33:23Speaker 3: ask me, said, well, my house got right back together.
- 33:25Speaker 3: I said, well, first of all, I can't tell you
- 33:27Speaker 3: that I don't know what debris fell down behind it.
- 33:30Speaker 3: But this, once we start to lift this, it's going
- 33:33Speaker 3: to start talking to us. And if you don't understand
- 33:36Speaker 3: that language, you're going to be in big trouble. And

- 33:43Speaker 3: the number one thing you need to learn when you're
- 33:46Speaker 3: lifting foundations and lifting concrete slabs is when to stop,
- 33:51Speaker 3: because I mean, you win to battle and lose the
- 33:54Speaker 3: wars as il saying goes, and I've trust me, I've
- 33:58Speaker 3: done that. I don't get paid a second time, but
- 34:01Speaker 3: I always come back.
- 34:03Speaker 2: We just have a couple of minutes left here. So
- 34:04Speaker 2: what I want to do before we leave the airway.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Somebody goes to your website marcoconcrete dot com. They take
- 34:10Speaker 2: a look around, they decide they want to call you.
- 34:12Speaker 2: That's three zero four seven to two lift, which is
- 34:14Speaker 2: seven two two fifty four to thirty eight threes zero four,
- 34:16Speaker 2: seven to two lift. And so walk me through the
- 34:18Speaker 2: process a little bit of what that customer, first time
- 34:21Speaker 2: customer is going to experience. They have an issue with
- 34:23Speaker 2: their foundation. They think they want you to come out
- 34:25Speaker 2: and take a look.
- 34:25Speaker 3: They call in secretary of takes her excuse me, taket
- 34:29Speaker 3: your name and number down. Like I got three leads
- 34:32Speaker 3: in the track. Once I leave here, I got to
- 34:34Speaker 3: go to look at three and I got to look
- 34:37Speaker 3: at it and tell them whether I can fix it,
- 34:39Speaker 3: whether I can't. It's it's very simple with us, and
- 34:44Speaker 3: we're very polite or try to be. And you know
- 34:48Speaker 3: it's just that.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Simple, you know, just browsing around online and looking at
- 34:53Speaker 2: some folks responses to your business over time and comments
- 34:55Speaker 2: that people leave. They love your professionalism, They love the
- 34:58Speaker 2: fact that the work site's always left as much as
- 35:01Speaker 2: possible the way that they found it, you know, clean
- 35:03Speaker 2: and tidied up and everything. And and like you talked
- 35:06Speaker 2: about the respect to given to the to the client,
- 35:08Speaker 2: I mean, your your history proves your own point because
- 35:12Speaker 2: that's what all your clients say about you.

- 35:18Speaker 3: of They write in after we're done and say, you know,
- 35:22Speaker 3: we had four people look at this, and Marco Concrete
- 35:26Speaker 3: was you know, they were a little more expensive, but
- 35:28Speaker 3: everything was perfect. Everything was cleaned, the house never leaked,
- 35:32Speaker 3: our walls are straight, the drains are fine, and you
