- 0:01Speaker 1: In this corner, standing at six foot five, weight class unknowns,
- 0:04Speaker 1: but hailing from the city of Sands.
- 0:06Speaker 2: Put your hands.
- 0:06Speaker 3: Together for Jamison will and in this then in his
- 0:10Speaker 3: five foot ten, weighing in at pound and coming to.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Us from his super secret bunker with no AC in Tucson, Arizona.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Put your hands together for Luis Montemao.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Welcome back to an episode of Mixed Company Podcasts. Of course,
- 0:26Speaker 1: on one half of the show, Jameson Welson joined by
- 0:29Speaker 1: Luis Luise.
- 0:29Speaker 2: What's going on? Man? Wow?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Jamison? You know what, right before we got onto the microphone,
- 0:36Speaker 3: you know, you shared a video of Terrence Bud Crawford
- 0:40Speaker 3: announcing his retirement from boxing. Literally this is if I
- 0:43Speaker 3: look at the timestap on this he posted it forty
- 0:46Speaker 3: minutes ago from when we started recording. So yeah, absolutely
- 0:49Speaker 3: breaking news. You know, last episode we did talk about
- 0:52Speaker 3: the fact that Canelo versus Crawford two was gonna happen.
- 0:57Speaker 3: There was a little bit of a nothing official and
- 1:00Speaker 3: there was even an article I read or something where
- 1:02Speaker 3: Bud was like, hey, man, whatever Canelo said is news
- 1:05Speaker 3: to me. So I was actually planning to come on
- 1:07Speaker 3: here and talk about whether the fight was how likely
- 1:10Speaker 3: the fight was or not. But it looks like, you know,
- 1:13Speaker 3: Bud Crawford is walking away into the sunset forty two
- 1:16Speaker 3: and zero, one of the best boxers of this of
- 1:19Speaker 3: this generation, powder for pound King just cannot say enough
- 1:23Speaker 3: about you know what a great fighter, talented fighter, at
- 1:26Speaker 3: a star he is. So yeah, I just want to
- 1:29Speaker 3: see what your thoughts are. This is all right off
- 1:31Speaker 3: the top of my head, because, like I said, we
- 1:32Speaker 3: just found this out.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's one of those things where if
- 1:38Speaker 1: you walk off with you know, like this, where you
- 1:41Speaker 1: have the perfect ending in a sense, why mess it up?
- 1:45Speaker 2: If you have enough money, if you if you're deal
- 1:47Speaker 2: with your money.
- 1:48Speaker 1: There's no crazy child, supporter, alimony or tax issue, then
- 1:53Speaker 1: why fight unless you have to?
- 1:55Speaker 2: Now, it also could be aployed to where hey.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I'm going to retire. Let's look at my number. So
- 2:00Speaker 1: he wants a hundred million, one hundred and fifty million. I
- 2:03Speaker 1: can see that being a ploy say, hey, you know what,
- 2:06Speaker 1: unless I get this number, I don't really need to
- 2:09Speaker 1: do this again. So if y'all won't come correct, cool,
- 2:12Speaker 1: If not, oh well, So I can see that being
- 2:15Speaker 1: part of it. But also it's up there in age.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He also knows his body better than we do, so
- 2:21Speaker 1: he knows what's that state. He knows how things go.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Outside of the money. There's really nothing else he can
- 2:28Speaker 1: do in boxing. There's no one else for him to beat.
- 2:31Speaker 1: There's no one else, there's no one else out there.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Can't go to one five and fight better be there
- 2:35Speaker 1: that can't that That just don't make sense.
- 2:37Speaker 2: So I get where you're coming from. I get it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: And going on top is better than going out the
- 2:42Speaker 2: other way, so I get it. I understand. But it's boxing.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I don't take anything for face value because we know
- 2:49Speaker 1: enough about boxers these days, where hey, we.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Know one way or another.
- 2:54Speaker 1: You know, guys retired and come back within six months before,
- 2:58Speaker 1: so nothing will surprised you. But if this then for Bud,
- 3:01Speaker 1: hell of a fighter, one of the best ever, probably
- 3:04Speaker 1: the best, definitely the best actor. Ford for sure is
- 3:07Speaker 1: one of the few guys to where I wish we
- 3:11Speaker 1: would have saw more because he was the top rank
- 3:13Speaker 1: for so long and top rank didn't market their guys
- 3:15Speaker 1: that they should have. He should have been a bigger star,
- 3:18Speaker 1: even when he's from Nebraska. He should have been a
- 3:20Speaker 1: bigger star. Than he was, but still hell of a fighter,
- 3:23Speaker 1: hell of a career, hell of a way to go out.
- 3:25Speaker 2: If this is indeed the way he went.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Out, Yeah, and you know I'm taking this. Let's let's
- 3:32Speaker 3: say I'm taking this seriously because you know, you never
- 3:35Speaker 3: know what could happen. But also the same way. Yeah,
- 3:37Speaker 3: people retired and retire, and hey, he has a lot
- 3:40Speaker 3: of money, but people can always go broke. Rick James
- 3:42Speaker 3: was rich, but you can always come back like a
- 3:46Speaker 3: Mandy Pacquiao needed to pay the text man. So but
- 3:49Speaker 3: let's just say yeah for for you know, the discussion's
- 3:52Speaker 3: sake that he is going out and he's not gonna
- 3:55Speaker 3: fight again. Uh, I think the it's understandable. We you
- 3:59Speaker 3: and I have also spoken about the fact that he's
- 4:01Speaker 3: getting up there an agent. We've been talking about his
- 4:03Speaker 3: retirement like for the last couple episodes, like when that's
- 4:06Speaker 3: gonna happen. It wasn't a matter of if, and it's
- 4:09Speaker 3: when and probably how soon. The only thing that bumms
- 4:13Speaker 3: me out is that we missed out on but Crawford,
- 4:16Speaker 3: the star, the draw. You know now that he be
- 4:20Speaker 3: canel out. There's been many conversations I had just from
- 4:24Speaker 3: time to time with people that find out like I
- 4:26Speaker 3: like boxing. They asked me about my favorite fighters. I
- 4:28Speaker 3: mentioned Bud Crawford and I got blank stares that I
- 4:31Speaker 3: had to tell him, you know, one of the best
- 4:33Speaker 3: to do. I can do pretty much everything, well, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 3: think about fighting that I learned about sparring, which is
- 4:39Speaker 3: not the same, but it's it made me realize that
- 4:43Speaker 3: not very many people are good at everything. You know,
- 4:45Speaker 3: if you're really strong, maybe you're not that fast. You know,
- 4:47Speaker 3: if you've got a good defense, maybe you're not always
- 4:50Speaker 3: a good counter puncher. Blah blah blah. You know, you're
- 4:54Speaker 3: you're You've got a lot of speech, but maybe not
- 4:55Speaker 3: a lot of power, et cetera, et cetera. And I
- 4:57Speaker 3: would tell people he's one of those guys who can
- 5:00Speaker 3: do it all. He's got the speed, he's got the power,
- 5:02Speaker 3: he's got the footwork, he's got the ring IQ he's
- 5:04Speaker 3: a switch hitter, for God's sake, like just kind of
- 5:07Speaker 3: a miracle fighter, honestly, one of those people like I
- 5:11Speaker 3: always go back to Mike Tyson being under six feet tall,
- 5:13Speaker 3: being a heavyweight under six feet tall and moving like
- 5:15Speaker 3: a little guy fighting two hundred plus pounds. Uh, just
- 5:20Speaker 3: how rare specimen, I guess, he'd say. And but it
- 5:23Speaker 3: was like that, and I was it was always really
- 5:25Speaker 3: nice tell him, be able to tell people what the
- 5:28Speaker 3: skills the guy has when he brought to the table.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And yeah, very few people knew who that was, just
- 5:33Speaker 3: in casual conversation at bars. You know, I'm not saying
- 5:35Speaker 3: anything like right, anything legiti official, but yeah, that's the
- 5:39Speaker 3: only bummer for me is that what was the household
- 5:43Speaker 3: name Bud Crawford career going to be like? And we
- 5:46Speaker 3: missed out. But hey, in air.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Where we don't have a lot of superstars in general
- 5:52Speaker 1: and sports, he was one of them. And we didn't
- 5:54Speaker 1: get the full fledged opportunity to see that. We didn't
- 5:58Speaker 1: get the oh, Bud's fighting, old Buds fighting. We need
- 6:01Speaker 1: to go do this, we need to go barbecue for this,
- 6:03Speaker 1: we need to go out for this. We didn't get that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: We didn't get the full press tour. We didn't get
- 6:08Speaker 1: to know a lot of his family life and whatnot,
- 6:12Speaker 1: even though it's really none of our business, but when
- 6:14Speaker 1: you were come to superstar, it is our business in
- 6:16Speaker 1: a sense. We didn't get any of the opportunities. Unfortunately,
- 6:18Speaker 1: so it sucks in that regard. However, it's one of
- 6:21Speaker 1: those things to where he went out his way and
- 6:25Speaker 1: I can respect that. You know, this is really indeed
- 6:27Speaker 1: the end he went out his way. He won the fight,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and he's like, hey, I'm comfortable with going out and
- 6:33Speaker 1: I can I other boxes go out like.
- 6:35Speaker 2: This or the other way. So it's it's okay to beer.
- 6:39Speaker 3: Yeah. So I've said it before myself that a lot
- 6:43Speaker 3: of fighters get high on their own supply and they
- 6:45Speaker 3: just keep going past the past the expiration day. I
- 6:49Speaker 3: really I think it's very exciting for you know, uh,
- 6:55Speaker 3: fans of boxing to discover a new a new name
- 6:58Speaker 3: they hadn't known was there the whole time. So I'm
- 7:01Speaker 3: glad that he I'm glad he got that moment, I guess,
- 7:03Speaker 3: is what I'm trying to say, that he had to
- 7:04Speaker 3: experience of being in the spotlight and having a lot
- 7:07Speaker 3: of people saying, holy shit, this guy like he's been
- 7:09Speaker 3: fighting this whole time. We didn't really get to know him.
- 7:13Speaker 3: So at least he was able to go out in
- 7:16Speaker 3: the highest possible I guess we would say, right, So
- 7:19Speaker 3: that's cool. And I was getting a little like I
- 7:21Speaker 3: was watching that video. So if y'all, if y'all go
- 7:23Speaker 3: on Budd's YouTube channel, the full video is on there.
- 7:26Speaker 3: It's like the announcement and him thinking, you know, fans,
- 7:30Speaker 3: opponent's family, et cetera. Management man. I was in at
- 7:33Speaker 3: the end like who it's zick and like hot and Arizona.
- 7:36Speaker 3: My eyes are a little sweaty boy. So yeah, I
- 7:42Speaker 3: don't really know what. There's much to say, much else
- 7:44Speaker 3: to say. I I was on record saying I wanted
- 7:47Speaker 3: to kind of over car for two because I wanted
- 7:49Speaker 3: just to see them back in the ring together. I admitted,
- 7:52Speaker 3: we don't.
- 7:52Speaker 2: We didn't need it.
- 7:53Speaker 3: We did not need that fight.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I just straight forward to it.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So you know, I'll say, like it's it's not a
- 8:00Speaker 3: big loss to the sport that we didn't get the
- 8:02Speaker 3: rematch because we got that first fight. It was incredible
- 8:05Speaker 3: that moment. You can't recreate it. So yeah, I mean,
- 8:09Speaker 3: just mad respect to Bud.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Yeah again, I mean, most times guys have to fight
- 8:17Speaker 1: until it's too late because they're broke.
- 8:19Speaker 2: So I'm glad he's, you know, the opposite.
- 8:22Speaker 1: You know, I don't think guys who enjoy fighting as
- 8:24Speaker 1: they get older, I think they fight because they have to,
- 8:26Speaker 1: not because they want to. So if he's bound out
- 8:29Speaker 1: at the top of his game, more power to him.
- 8:32Speaker 3: That's a very good point. Yeah, that's the saddest thing
- 8:34Speaker 3: to see is when someone's heart is just not in
- 8:36Speaker 3: it and they had I mean, so uh that Tyson
- 8:40Speaker 3: fight before he h I forget who he fought. When
- 8:42Speaker 3: he just got kind of humiliated, he said, I just
- 8:45Speaker 3: didn't care, you know, I just had to be here
- 8:47Speaker 3: for the paycheck. We don't want to see, we don't
- 8:49Speaker 3: want to see. But turned out like that.
- 8:51Speaker 1: Man, I don't want to see anyone like that, Benest
- 8:54Speaker 1: I really don't like even the Boxes. I don't like Andy,
- 8:57Speaker 1: and Joshua has to fight until he's forty five. I
- 9:00Speaker 1: don't really want to see him struggling. I'm not a
- 9:02Speaker 1: fan of his, but I don't want to see any
- 9:03Speaker 1: of those types struggling.
- 9:05Speaker 3: That's fair. That's fair, you know. And when we always
- 9:07Speaker 3: I like to always bring it back to the fact
- 9:09Speaker 3: that you know, these people are putting their lives on
- 9:11Speaker 3: the line getting into that ring every time. It doesn't
- 9:13Speaker 3: matter how young you are, fit, you are, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: how good you are, it's always it's always dangerous. It's
- 9:18Speaker 3: very dangerous sport. And yeah, I want all boxers to
- 9:22Speaker 3: retire happy, fulfilled and being able to pay the bills, right,
- 9:27Speaker 3: said Jay Pauline. Go Hell, okay, let's see. Well then
- 9:32Speaker 3: let's uh, let's get into the meeting the show that
- 9:35Speaker 3: we were going to do before this news came out,
- 9:38Speaker 3: just a couple of recaps in the last couple of weeks.
- 9:42Speaker 3: Let's go to the finest source in boxing news, the
- 9:44Speaker 3: Boxing Gazette, brought to you by our sponsor, Delightful Smoke
- 9:47Speaker 3: Shop in Tucson, Arizona, open seven days a week. Make
- 9:50Speaker 3: sure you stop buying for some goodies and hoodies located
- 9:53Speaker 3: at six two twenty second Street, so Lamont Roach Piple Cruise.
- 10:00Speaker 3: A couple of weeks ago, Lawotte Roach has been all
- 10:03Speaker 3: over the show. He had another draw, So say did
- 10:06Speaker 3: against Tank Davis At the end of it he was
- 10:08Speaker 3: very frustrated, just said he just wanted a fair shot.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Both guys thought they won the match. Let's start here, David,
- 10:17Speaker 3: did you think that result was fair or not?
- 10:21Speaker 1: Man, So, whenever there's a close fight, it ends in
- 10:23Speaker 1: a draws on the end of the world, right, I
- 10:24Speaker 1: think that's the thing people got to realize if you
- 10:27Speaker 1: had it anywhere between, if you had a seven to
- 10:31Speaker 1: five you the way, then it could be a draw.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Eight. When it's eight four or above, then it's like,
- 10:36Speaker 2: all right, you know, we know we.
- 10:38Speaker 1: Were confilutting hairs, but it it's seven to five you
- 10:41Speaker 1: the way, I really can't be mad. I'm mad it's
- 10:46Speaker 1: a draw, but I'm kidding at throws. I mean, it
- 10:48Speaker 1: is what it is like somebody sometimes somebody can't win.
- 10:51Speaker 1: That's how it goes, and then you do about that.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I just think that's just how it went. I think
- 10:56Speaker 1: he has more b from the first fight that he
- 10:58Speaker 1: got drawing in this one. To be honest of you,
- 11:00Speaker 1: the first fight he should have won with the knockdown
- 11:02Speaker 1: stuff and everything that took place and all that.
- 11:05Speaker 2: He has a bigger beef in that one. This when
- 11:07Speaker 2: this one is what it is. I mean.
- 11:09Speaker 1: At the same time, though you are a lot roach,
- 11:10Speaker 1: you are the guy that is not selling the fight,
- 11:14Speaker 1: so you need to knock guys out.
- 11:15Speaker 2: You got to finish the show.
- 11:17Speaker 1: You cannot rely on the cars going forward because the
- 11:19Speaker 1: cards have proven they've been unkind to you. So you
- 11:22Speaker 1: need to make some adjustments and go for kill shot
- 11:25Speaker 1: if it's there, and hopefully he's able to do that
- 11:27Speaker 1: going forward.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Yeah, I as I was watching the fight, and I
- 11:32Speaker 3: didn't really have a strung prediction either way, but like
- 11:34Speaker 3: about halfway through it, maybe let's say round, like I
- 11:36Speaker 3: don't know nine, I was like, oh shit, this could
- 11:40Speaker 3: potentially be a draw, Like I really thought that. And
- 11:42Speaker 3: I'm not saying just to you know, to be like,
- 11:44Speaker 3: oh I knew it was gonna happen, blah blah blah.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Like you can't tell, how you can't tell? Hey, yeah,
- 11:50Speaker 2: you have a good sense of things. I thought. I thought.
- 11:52Speaker 3: I was like, holy shit, is he going to walk
- 11:53Speaker 3: out with another drive after what happened? And it's true.
- 11:56Speaker 3: So now here's what I really wanted to say that
- 11:58Speaker 3: I think is a big, big deal that we have
- 12:00Speaker 3: to always remember is that Lamont Roach was not the
- 12:03Speaker 3: guy that was supposed to win either fight against Tank
- 12:05Speaker 3: Davis or Piple Cruz. Like nobody knew he was. Nobody.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Nobody cared about that. We you and I we have
- 12:11Speaker 3: said on the show on record, nobody gives a shit
- 12:14Speaker 3: about Take versus before that.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Show name, he's in a position to make a lot
- 12:20Speaker 1: of money next year and going forward, he's not close
- 12:23Speaker 1: the show.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I mean, here's the thing. When you have the name
- 12:26Speaker 2: he has, you can't leave it to the judges. Just can't.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Like it's sucks, but you can't like, I just can't
- 12:33Speaker 2: do that.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So going forward, going forward to the training camp, you
- 12:37Speaker 1: got to make adjustments to make sure that when fights
- 12:40Speaker 1: are closed, you close the show late so this don't happen.
- 12:44Speaker 3: Yes, and we also definitely have to give him credit
- 12:47Speaker 3: for being a dude who's who I guess was a
- 12:51Speaker 3: was a disruptor and a fly in the oint man
- 12:53Speaker 3: whatever you want to say, against two very aggressive, talented,
- 12:56Speaker 3: big name fighters with a lot of skills, like they
- 12:58Speaker 3: could not put him down. They couldn't decisively even beat
- 13:01Speaker 3: him unanimously by decision either, So that is that is
- 13:07Speaker 3: a big deal. You know, this guy's not, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 3: just a delicate flower of a man. He went out
- 13:12Speaker 3: there and he got to work. So yes, he did
- 13:16Speaker 3: say at the end of the fights, back to the
- 13:18Speaker 3: drawing board, and you were correct. Yeah, sometimes you can't
- 13:21Speaker 3: just wait on the judges. But he definitely deserves credit
- 13:26Speaker 3: for getting in that ring and just two guys with
- 13:30Speaker 3: various particular styles that overwhelmed their opponents and both knockout artists.
- 13:35Speaker 3: He took that shit astride and you know, my hat's
- 13:39Speaker 3: off to telemont Roach. And he's also not he's thirty,
- 13:44Speaker 3: so he's not an old man. But also that can
- 13:46Speaker 3: be a senior citizen in boxing. So he definitely has
- 13:52Speaker 3: a lot more fights ahead of him if he wants
- 13:54Speaker 3: to keep going. But he's got to take this opportunity
- 13:57Speaker 3: and run with it. Of being the guy that did
- 13:59Speaker 3: not get knocked out by either Pitbull or Ted Davis,
- 14:02Speaker 3: I mean.
- 14:02Speaker 2: He's gonna have a hell of a year all they considered.
- 14:04Speaker 2: I mean, his career is way different now.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Is probably making seven fingers on fight night now, which
- 14:09Speaker 1: is great, So that's cool. It's just more about taking
- 14:12Speaker 1: the next step. It's the next steps there to be taken.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know, his skill set and his body allows him
- 14:17Speaker 1: to take the next step, then he's gonna be all right.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Are they running this one back or are we still
- 14:21Speaker 1: on the side of yet?
- 14:22Speaker 2: Uh?
- 14:23Speaker 3: They said they were just running back, but there's no
- 14:24Speaker 3: thing but nothing official.
- 14:26Speaker 2: Okay, I wouldn't be opposed to that. It was a
- 14:29Speaker 2: good fight.
- 14:30Speaker 3: It was a very good fight, you know, pit Bull
- 14:31Speaker 3: Cruise is a very active fighter. He's he doesn't dilly
- 14:34Speaker 3: deli in the ring and Lewan Roach two has proven
- 14:37Speaker 3: to be good defense and he appears to me from
- 14:41Speaker 3: watching him, he's a dude who uh he said, disrupts
- 14:45Speaker 3: the other fighters plans like he can he can take
- 14:48Speaker 3: the punishment. Uh he he's not. He's not caught unawares
- 14:52Speaker 3: by by his opponents. So he's he's a smart fighter
- 14:55Speaker 3: for sure. And yeah, I want to see him anything
- 14:58Speaker 3: again as fast as possible, and I want to see
- 15:00Speaker 3: him get better. He fought two of the best names
- 15:02Speaker 3: out there, the biggest names out there. Iron sharpens iron,
- 15:05Speaker 3: so hopefully he learns from that. And I just want
- 15:09Speaker 3: to see what he does with this opportunity to have
- 15:12Speaker 3: been to have been laughed off or he brushed off
- 15:16Speaker 3: or whatever. You know, myself included, I'm part of the problem.
- 15:20Speaker 3: But yeah, man, I really hope that we get the
- 15:23Speaker 3: Cruise rematch and just see what he can do. I
- 15:26Speaker 3: don't know, he's got a lot of potential. And he
- 15:30Speaker 3: and he looked really good in that ring. That's another
- 15:32Speaker 3: thing too, Like he's very good. Yeah, I mean, how
- 15:36Speaker 3: both guys look good. But Roades was prepared.
- 15:40Speaker 1: He looked like he was ready to make a name
- 15:43Speaker 1: for himself, and I think that's a good thing coming
- 15:45Speaker 1: off of a successful fight. Previously, a lot of times
- 15:48Speaker 1: God's come off the fight he came off of and
- 15:50Speaker 1: they get filled himselves. They fought a good fight, and
- 15:52Speaker 1: they all fall flat because they've been reading the press clippings.
- 15:55Speaker 1: He did not look like that. I think the best
- 15:57Speaker 1: thing for him going forward is to put together another
- 16:00Speaker 1: good fight going forward and keep it moving because he
- 16:03Speaker 1: has the future of the sport.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Big sixth Famas is getting the one magical decision to
- 16:10Speaker 2: go his.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Way or the one big knockout to go his way,
- 16:12Speaker 1: and then next you know he's fighting really big fights
- 16:15Speaker 1: and everything changed from there.
- 16:17Speaker 2: So we'll see.
- 16:18Speaker 1: But also here's the thing too, there's no more Boogeyman
- 16:21Speaker 1: than the one forty seven division anymore, Like there's no
- 16:25Speaker 1: one could right. But you know, up until September, profit
- 16:28Speaker 1: was a guy at one fifty seven, Hey, I stay
- 16:32Speaker 1: with this guy. Guy say for this guy one you know,
- 16:35Speaker 1: there's no more of that, no more, there's no one
- 16:36Speaker 1: that's like, oh we gotta say if him where that's
- 16:39Speaker 1: the guy. But now there's none of that no more,
- 16:42Speaker 1: uh and Tank being Tank not being yell around. He's
- 16:47Speaker 1: not the guy either. So now we look at Shakira
- 16:49Speaker 1: Stevenson as basically the number one guy left. That's kind
- 16:55Speaker 1: of the the number one guy, and we'll see in
- 16:58Speaker 1: about a month and a half, we'll see what he's
- 17:00Speaker 1: about and see what he can do when he's favorite
- 17:02Speaker 1: on a big night or everybody watching.
- 17:04Speaker 2: I think he will be for tourist, but we'll see.
- 17:06Speaker 2: But yeah, it's a lot has changed in the year.
- 17:08Speaker 3: A lot.
- 17:09Speaker 2: This time last year, Tank was basically the face of boxing,
- 17:14Speaker 2: and man, that's change that changed a lot.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Yeah. No, that's an excellent point. I just pulled up
- 17:20Speaker 3: while you were talking, pulled up the rankings here. I'm
- 17:22Speaker 3: looking names of like Boots boot Sennis, Roly Romero and
- 17:25Speaker 3: on forty seven Devin Haney. You know he's had his resurgence.
- 17:29Speaker 3: But yeah, in terms of the guy, the biggest name
- 17:32Speaker 3: on this list was Terrence Grafford h So yeah, I
- 17:37Speaker 3: mean you got a couple of these, couple of Britishes here,
- 17:39Speaker 3: Irish is Jack Catererroll Connor Ben. But yeah, in terms
- 17:44Speaker 3: of like the the the star to beat, it's kind
- 17:47Speaker 3: of everything was thrown into Uh, everything was became very
- 17:51Speaker 3: tumultuous here at this at this fight, at this weight class.
- 17:55Speaker 3: What I'm trying to say interesting, Well, let's see what happened.
- 18:00Speaker 3: So either way, you know, respect to Roach for holding
- 18:04Speaker 3: his own in the ring twice now and and here's well,
- 18:08Speaker 3: let's get to this. Yeah, yes he should have won
- 18:10Speaker 3: that last Take fight. However, it is Tank took a
- 18:13Speaker 3: knee which should have been counted as a knockdown, should
- 18:16Speaker 3: have been taken a point off of him. However, let's say,
- 18:19Speaker 3: let's take let's assume that Tank was telling the truth
- 18:22Speaker 3: that he was getting hair grease in in his eye,
- 18:23Speaker 3: and needed matter. Doesn't that, it doesn't matter, It doesn't matter, doesn't.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Matter, it doesn't matter.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Right, But in an alternate university's Tank was just bald
- 18:33Speaker 3: or whatever and that didn't happen. I mean, it would
- 18:37Speaker 3: have still been a drawing in terms of the actual
- 18:39Speaker 3: boxing style or the quality of the fight, you know
- 18:42Speaker 3: what I'm saying. Like, so, yes, he should have won,
- 18:46Speaker 3: and yes, it doesn't matter why you take a knee.
- 18:48Speaker 3: If you stop fighting for any reason in those three
- 18:51Speaker 3: minutes and the referee didn't stop the fight, that's on you.
- 18:54Speaker 3: You know, that's what your job is to is to
- 18:55Speaker 3: stay stay on your feet for three minutes at a time.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:00Speaker 3: But yeah, But the point I'm trying to make is
- 19:01Speaker 3: that hopefully Lamont Roach learns from that, because if TI
- 19:06Speaker 3: didn't take that knee at all, it would have been
- 19:08Speaker 3: a legitimate draw on the cards based on I'll.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Come for him though, remember he was a heavy undergog.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Were said. Uh so, all I'm saying is that, you know,
- 19:20Speaker 3: take that into account going forward, Lamont Roach and are listening,
- 19:23Speaker 3: uh and yes, start to start figuring out how to
- 19:27Speaker 3: how to get the knockout, how to get the ko
- 19:29Speaker 3: before before the end of the Uh, I don't I
- 19:31Speaker 3: gotta We're gotta talk to some more boxers because like,
- 19:33Speaker 3: I don't know how you even train yourself to be
- 19:37Speaker 3: better at knocking people out. I mean, be aggressive, but
- 19:40Speaker 3: like I don't know, I've never done that.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Knockout artists. How many knockout artists do we have? Uh?
- 19:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean button Tank. Uh, let's see, Canelo hasn't
- 19:50Speaker 3: been in a while. Benavidez, Yes, Benavidez definitely can't forget
- 19:57Speaker 3: our boy in the boots.
- 20:02Speaker 1: But we haven't really seen him fight anyone like really worthy,
- 20:05Speaker 1: like to be really to test that theory out.
- 20:07Speaker 2: But in a lot of other fights he's been but whatever, right.
- 20:11Speaker 3: Better be a uh.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:15Speaker 3: So I'm really curious if, like if I was a
- 20:17Speaker 3: boxer and like I want to really really increase my
- 20:20Speaker 3: ability to knock people out knockout power, Like, how do
- 20:22Speaker 3: you train that? I have no clue, but they got to.
- 20:26Speaker 1: That's what that has to be in you. You also
- 20:29Speaker 1: have to have power in both hands. I think I
- 20:31Speaker 1: think you have to have knockout power in both hands.
- 20:33Speaker 1: So I think that's a big thing, and not everybody
- 20:37Speaker 1: is blessed to have that, so it's pretty fascinating.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know I think about that. All I
- 20:43Speaker 3: know is that I did. I counted, like during sparring,
- 20:46Speaker 3: three different dudes on seppifications hit the mat when I
- 20:49Speaker 3: was firing them, and I never hit one. So I
- 20:52Speaker 3: felt like bud walking away from from that, from the
- 20:56Speaker 3: sparring and never being put down even though I was,
- 20:58Speaker 3: I was never good at it. Mind you, I was
- 21:00Speaker 3: never good as far. Uh let's see what I'm saying. Okay,
- 21:05Speaker 3: moving on to another fight.
- 21:06Speaker 2: This one.
- 21:07Speaker 3: This is an episode in which I very much confess
- 21:10Speaker 3: to being the problem, but a lot of things. So
- 21:12Speaker 3: we talked the last episode about how Benavidez is moving
- 21:16Speaker 3: to cruiserweight because he's not getting the fights he needs,
- 21:19Speaker 3: you know ed he wants, he's making a name for
- 21:21Speaker 3: himself fighting bigger guys, blah blah blah. I said that
- 21:24Speaker 3: there wasn't really a lot of cruiser weights that I knew,
- 21:27Speaker 3: and then last Saturday there was a Cruiserway fight that
- 21:29Speaker 3: I missed because I didn't realize.
- 21:33Speaker 2: So that's the thing. We're not getting no marketing with
- 21:36Speaker 2: the bike bro. There's there's no no nothing, no email,
- 21:40Speaker 2: no nothing.
- 21:42Speaker 3: I didn't know, and I wanted to get your take
- 21:44Speaker 3: on it. Is it just because people just in general
- 21:45Speaker 3: don't care about cruiser weight as a weight class, because
- 21:48Speaker 3: it was.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Just the was rough months for sports and everybody's out
- 21:54Speaker 1: like right now, people are off work till the end
- 21:55Speaker 1: of the year. If it's not being heavily marketed, it
- 21:58Speaker 1: was not a big fight, people not It's the worst
- 22:02Speaker 1: month for TV in general this month. People are traveling,
- 22:06Speaker 1: people are off work, people are not paying attention. So
- 22:09Speaker 1: all these things are going on, and if it's a
- 22:11Speaker 1: fight that people aren't like all the way locked in on.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Yeah good luck.
- 22:19Speaker 3: Well, what's crazy is that I was at home watching TV.
- 22:22Speaker 3: I could have like I was channel serving and they
- 22:25Speaker 3: were showing all three Hobbit movies on HBO, and I
- 22:27Speaker 3: was like, I don't even like those movies, but I'm like,
- 22:29Speaker 3: let me give you a fair shake. I would get
- 22:30Speaker 3: up to get a snack. I wouldn't pause that would
- 22:32Speaker 3: you know, go in and out, and like, I would
- 22:35Speaker 3: have much rather watched the goddamn boxing match of those movies. Honestly,
- 22:38Speaker 3: I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but the
- 22:40Speaker 3: Hub movies, I'm like, I wanted to give them a
- 22:42Speaker 3: fair shake. But anyway, Badu Jack and Norah Mchaelean it
- 22:48Speaker 3: was their rematch over the weekend. So I actually remember
- 22:50Speaker 3: the first one because it was see good to my
- 22:53Speaker 3: Ow weekend this year. They were there on the Canalo
- 22:56Speaker 3: cart uh. Yeah, and they were actually a very uh.
- 23:02Speaker 3: They were a good fight. They're active, energetic, exciting fight.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Uh.
- 23:06Speaker 3: If you remember, Seeking to Mayo weekend was most of
- 23:08Speaker 3: the mostly a dud this year. Another another thing that
- 23:12Speaker 3: I've that I've messed up here a couple of times.
- 23:15Speaker 3: Sco to Mayo was the the ring Times Square bullshit
- 23:20Speaker 3: where they put a ring in the middle of New York. Yeah,
- 23:23Speaker 3: I had said like a couple of its ago. It
- 23:24Speaker 3: was like, oh it was July fourth, the you know,
- 23:27Speaker 3: I messed up.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I know, my bad, My bad. I I the memories.
- 23:33Speaker 3: The memories first thing to go when you get old.
- 23:35Speaker 3: But yes, that was seeking to my weekend when we
- 23:37Speaker 3: had that terrible Devin Haney fight, Roly Romero beat Ryan Garcia,
- 23:42Speaker 3: and Canelo fought Williams Skull also a very boring fight,
- 23:46Speaker 3: so badu Jack and and Norah mckelly and was actually
- 23:49Speaker 3: a good fight that weekend. And then of course Sunday
- 23:53Speaker 3: was May fifth and we had now Yahnaway in Vegas,
- 23:55Speaker 3: which was awesome, So he saved that weekend. But the
- 23:58Speaker 3: point is that I actually would have been interested to
- 24:00Speaker 3: see them run it back. Yeah, I just didn't know
- 24:04Speaker 3: that that this was happening on Saturday, and.
- 24:08Speaker 2: Nothing on Instagram, nothing, so loo can you do?
- 24:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so I it's my theory. Yes, you were correct
- 24:17Speaker 3: that Decembers are a rough time and people are doing stuff.
- 24:20Speaker 3: But yeah, there's no big cruiserweight names out there that
- 24:24Speaker 3: are that I can think of as a draw I mean,
- 24:27Speaker 3: like I said, Beta Bus is fighting Zula Ramirez and
- 24:31Speaker 3: Zuda the Rameiras fought Bevll, but he went down to
- 24:34Speaker 3: light heavyweight to do that, right, so he yes, is
- 24:37Speaker 3: like sorry, I'm sorry. Bevill just stayed where he was
- 24:40Speaker 3: so like there was no and I remember that fight
- 24:43Speaker 3: was uh, that was fight was was heavily marketed because
- 24:48Speaker 3: it was after bev All beat Canelo and that was
- 24:51Speaker 3: his next fight, so people were paying attention. But again,
- 24:54Speaker 3: nobody's paying attention to damn cruiser weight. So I don't know,
- 24:57Speaker 3: it's really interesting to to see what to see if
- 25:01Speaker 3: Benavitez makes any headway into to make in cruise weight
- 25:04Speaker 3: exciting next year. Yeah, but yeah, that's what happened the
- 25:09Speaker 3: last couple of weeks. Let's talk a little bit about
- 25:10Speaker 3: what's coming up going forward. So yet again we usually
- 25:15Speaker 3: need to make a list of the things that I
- 25:17Speaker 3: either forgot or got wrong because I was talking about
- 25:20Speaker 3: wanted to see Devin Haney versus Ryan Garcia again, and
- 25:24Speaker 3: I completely missed the news that actually Ryan Garcia is
- 25:27Speaker 3: going to be fighting Mario Barrios in February.
- 25:31Speaker 2: It's already.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yeah, did you know about that?
- 25:33Speaker 2: I found yeah when you Yeah, not, I didn't allowed
- 25:36Speaker 2: till recently. It makes sense.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it's actually it was announced a couple weeks ago.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I just it fell through the cracks, so we could
- 25:45Speaker 3: have been could have added to the show now, so
- 25:47Speaker 3: I just didn't realize it. But yeah, Mario Barrios, if
- 25:50Speaker 3: y'all remember, he was last seen fighting and coming to
- 25:55Speaker 3: a draw again against Mannipacio. Some people would even say
- 25:59Speaker 3: that Manipaccio won that fight. I was okay with draw
- 26:03Speaker 3: honestly based on what I saw. Yeah, yeah, I wouldn't
- 26:06Speaker 3: say it was like highway robbery or anything like that,
- 26:08Speaker 3: but yeah, I mean, Ryan Garcia just kind of keep
- 26:14Speaker 3: going back and forth on where where he should be
- 26:17Speaker 3: in his career. You know, he was a star, but
- 26:20Speaker 3: he kind of was up to antics. And I don't
- 26:23Speaker 3: even know what to say about the guy, Like is
- 26:24Speaker 3: he still a star? Is he still a draw? Is
- 26:26Speaker 3: he still are people still interested in seeing him fight?
- 26:29Speaker 3: Does he still have you know, a big fan base?
- 26:31Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 26:31Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 26:32Speaker 3: How do you how do you personally see him? Just
- 26:34Speaker 3: your opinion that doesn't even have to be you know,
- 26:36Speaker 3: so he fought handy.
- 26:38Speaker 1: It'll be almost two when he fights again, it's basically
- 26:40Speaker 1: two years since he fought, a long time for a
- 26:43Speaker 1: guy to not be in action. We're gonna see how
- 26:46Speaker 1: big a star is cause I know he's been on
- 26:48Speaker 1: social media, but when you're gone for so long and
- 26:51Speaker 1: you haven't done anything productive, basically I don't. I mean,
- 26:56Speaker 1: I just don't really take him seriously. Why it's hard seriously,
- 27:00Speaker 1: doesn't do much, and like we talk about him in
- 27:03Speaker 1: the non boxing ways, like that's the thing. We don't
- 27:07Speaker 1: take him sis, Like his last like big big fight
- 27:11Speaker 1: was you know, the hating one where it's basically no contest.
- 27:15Speaker 1: So with that being said, no, I don't take him seriously.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I honestly think that it's gonna be kind of a
- 27:22Speaker 1: dud because he hasn't done anything worthwhile, and we talk
- 27:27Speaker 1: about everything about him except boxing. We talk about everything
- 27:32Speaker 1: else to talk about, all the social media standigans, all
- 27:36Speaker 1: the outing stuff. It's never about the fighting yourself. So
- 27:41Speaker 1: whenever it's guys like that, I'm always weary of guys
- 27:44Speaker 1: like that because what are they fighting for?
- 27:46Speaker 2: What are you in this for?
- 27:47Speaker 1: Are you in this for the fame or are you
- 27:49Speaker 1: in this for the actual love of the sport? And
- 27:53Speaker 1: to me, it feels like a guy's in it for
- 27:55Speaker 1: the fame. And I just don't know, man, I I.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Don't trust him. I don't trust him to be short
- 28:02Speaker 2: for this fight. I just don't. I don't see it.
- 28:06Speaker 3: It's hard to root for a guy like that. Absolutely.
- 28:09Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, it seems to be that he's happy
- 28:13Speaker 3: being being famous. For being famous. I guess he'd say
- 28:17Speaker 3: having a social media cloud and and being out there
- 28:20Speaker 3: and getting into shenanigans and if boxing can support that,
- 28:23Speaker 3: maybe that's why he's doing it. You know, again, it's
- 28:25Speaker 3: just speaking just my opinion. Uh, it is how I
- 28:29Speaker 3: see him. But at the end of the day, yeah,
- 28:30Speaker 3: we're we're not really saying anything about how great on
- 28:33Speaker 3: a fighter he is, about his legacy, about you know,
- 28:36Speaker 3: anything like that. It's all how much does he actually
- 28:38Speaker 3: care about getting into the room. He's telling the better
- 28:40Speaker 3: and he's very, very powerful in the ring. You know,
- 28:42Speaker 3: he he's a he's a knockout artist. He can catch
- 28:44Speaker 3: somebody with a good power shot and it's a it's
- 28:48Speaker 3: a good night. So definitely he's got that skill, he's
- 28:51Speaker 3: got that God given power in him.
- 28:55Speaker 1: But if he finds I don't want and I purposely
- 29:01Speaker 1: left that fight out because I don't That fight was
- 29:03Speaker 1: so bad that I didn't even put that on him.
- 29:05Speaker 1: That whole event was weird, so I didn't include that.
- 29:08Speaker 1: But his last good showing wasn't no contest. Take that
- 29:13Speaker 1: for what it's worth.
- 29:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that was July twenty twenty four, and then he
- 29:16Speaker 3: had the one year suspension because he popped for yep
- 29:19Speaker 3: Roman as they came back some good in Mio this year.
- 29:23Speaker 3: I actually think did really did well in that fight, like.
- 29:25Speaker 1: I know he did, but you know that fight was
- 29:27Speaker 1: what it was, the whole environment around it. But Ryan
- 29:31Speaker 1: Garcia is unserious. Until if Ryan Garcia has ever got serious,
- 29:36Speaker 1: then we talked about differently. But until then he is
- 29:38Speaker 1: known as an unserious boxer and we got to treat
- 29:41Speaker 1: him as such and we'll see what happened. He's another
- 29:44Speaker 1: guy where if he loses this fight, we're talking about
- 29:47Speaker 1: five PM and earlier with him another Yeah, hey, hey,
- 29:51Speaker 1: like I remember the days. I remember, I remember back
- 29:55Speaker 1: when he was this and that it's for me that
- 29:57Speaker 1: because even though box didn't have the the amount of
- 30:01Speaker 1: stars that used to have you start losing, they ain't
- 30:04Speaker 1: no room for you somebody will take your spot. Somebody
- 30:07Speaker 1: will take the next step, and he's a loss of way.
- 30:10Speaker 1: You can't go no contest, loss loss. You do that,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you're not headlining. Shit, you're not even a second cold
- 30:18Speaker 1: fight on the card. You start getting knocked before the
- 30:21Speaker 1: team starts rolling.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Not good, not good.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Yes, that is always a possibility. What else is a
- 30:28Speaker 3: possibility is the thing that we did, and I'll say again,
- 30:31Speaker 3: mostly me with Haiti is that I was like, is
- 30:33Speaker 3: this the less We're gonna hear this cloud? And then
- 30:35Speaker 3: he comes back stars.
- 30:36Speaker 2: You know whatever?
- 30:37Speaker 3: Now I do not to straight up.
- 30:40Speaker 2: We gotta put that pressure on because here's the thing.
- 30:42Speaker 2: If they don't fight like their cris on the line,
- 30:45Speaker 2: then we will accept bullshit performances. So when they know, hey,
- 30:49Speaker 2: I need to get together or else better get together,
- 30:52Speaker 2: because here's the thing, here's the situation. My thing is this.
- 31:01Speaker 2: If you don't take your career seriously, why should I.
- 31:07Speaker 2: If you don't take your career seriously, if you don't
- 31:09Speaker 2: have the urgency in your career, then why should I care?
- 31:14Speaker 2: That's how I look at it. Like.
- 31:15Speaker 1: So for me, I'm like, okay, well we'll see what
- 31:18Speaker 1: we got because eventually it's put up, our shut up.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Eventually as hey, man figure it out, because this ain't
- 31:25Speaker 1: it like this, you can't be lack blessed.
- 31:29Speaker 2: And also, who is Ryan Garcia? It really beat.
- 31:35Speaker 3: Yeah, off the top of my head, not really. I mean, yeah,
- 31:37Speaker 3: he was mostly known. You know, A big deal was
- 31:41Speaker 3: made about his comeback when he took some time away.
- 31:43Speaker 3: He said he had mental health issues, et cetera. And
- 31:45Speaker 3: actually remember his big I don't remember who he thought,
- 31:48Speaker 3: but it was enough a big deal that I went
- 31:50Speaker 3: to see that fight in the movie theater like they
- 31:52Speaker 3: played in the theaters here, which is cool. He did fight,
- 31:56Speaker 3: take you, but you didn't ask who he fought. You
- 31:59Speaker 3: said who he beat?
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah, like it really ain't really impressive.
- 32:07Speaker 3: Well okay, let let me put it. Let me put
- 32:09Speaker 3: this question back at you. So where did his fame
- 32:12Speaker 3: really come from? I mean, he's definitely, like I said,
- 32:14Speaker 3: a skilled fighter, but I haven't seen anything from him
- 32:17Speaker 3: just because he's like, here's nothing. I don't follow him
- 32:20Speaker 3: on social media. I don't give a shit. I never had.
- 32:23Speaker 1: That's where it comes from. The social media is where
- 32:24Speaker 1: it comes from. The being on Golden Boy with Oscar
- 32:28Speaker 1: constantly pupping him lotstuff comes from that.
- 32:30Speaker 3: So yeah, so it is that then it's it's not
- 32:37Speaker 3: that he has been, you know, such a talented, amazing
- 32:41Speaker 3: fighter that you know, the world takes notice. It's more
- 32:43Speaker 3: that he's just on there doing stupid ship and like
- 32:47Speaker 3: people let people enjoy following that.
- 32:49Speaker 2: That is correct.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I've I've kind of gone back and forth
- 32:55Speaker 3: on whether I even care about him fighting. You know,
- 32:57Speaker 3: in the last couple of years, the Tech fight was
- 33:00Speaker 3: very exciting and I was I was stoked for that,
- 33:03Speaker 3: Like I went out for that, big crowd came out
- 33:05Speaker 3: and it was a great time. It was a great fight.
- 33:08Speaker 3: But I think it's was very clear that as long
- 33:12Speaker 3: as Ryan fight somebody with the at least a decent
- 33:14Speaker 3: amount of ring IQ like he's cooked yep, doesn't have
- 33:18Speaker 3: those Yeah, he can't counter somebody.
- 33:21Speaker 1: Like no adjustments, no plan BC, nothing like, it was
- 33:26Speaker 1: nothing right right, So I don't know.
- 33:29Speaker 3: I I would put money on Mario Barrios. I think
- 33:32Speaker 3: he's he's a talented fighter. He's got the skills that
- 33:34Speaker 3: could potentially stop a ranging Garcia. But again, if he
- 33:37Speaker 3: lands a really really strong punch, I mean, uh, it
- 33:41Speaker 3: only takes one. It only takes one punch to you know,
- 33:45Speaker 3: close out a fight. But we'll see that's happening in February.
- 33:50Speaker 3: So we've got Chaquarinteo January, Ryan Garcia returning in February,
- 33:55Speaker 3: and then we're just kind of waiting to see what
- 33:57Speaker 3: Devin Hayney is doing. So those are those those mid
- 34:00Speaker 3: those smaller like mid weight guys. There is what we're expecting.
- 34:05Speaker 3: So another news, moving up to weight class. Alexander Usik
- 34:12Speaker 3: showed signs of life. He said he wants to fight
- 34:14Speaker 3: Deontay Wilder next year. I thought that I had said
- 34:19Speaker 3: made a point that it seems like a lot of
- 34:20Speaker 3: the Eastern European boxing names were on their way out.
- 34:22Speaker 3: Alexander Rusk got his big win against Fury in the
- 34:25Speaker 3: second fight, and he'd just been quiet, Like unless I
- 34:28Speaker 3: missed anything, I heard crickets, So I was like, is
- 34:30Speaker 3: he retiring? Is he thinking of hanging it up?
- 34:32Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 34:33Speaker 3: I mean, I've always liked Deontae never the best fighter.
- 34:37Speaker 3: We've said that sure many times. But part of it
- 34:40Speaker 3: too is the nostalgia of like a black American heavyweight star,
- 34:44Speaker 3: which you know he was. He was a name he
- 34:46Speaker 3: has a draw, But I don't know. I mean, what
- 34:48Speaker 3: is the state of the heavyweight class when the current
- 34:51Speaker 3: biggest star, Rusick is fighting a guy who hasn't really
- 34:53Speaker 3: even been active since like twenty twenty.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Three, hasn't been good in like five years. I've asked
- 34:57Speaker 1: to be this issue, like Deontay Water hasn't made good
- 35:00Speaker 1: six years. Actually, I think that's a bigger question. But
- 35:05Speaker 1: people will tune in if he's fighting. I think that's
- 35:07Speaker 1: a big thing, right If you're trying to sell fights,
- 35:10Speaker 1: Wilder's name will get the casual eyeballs on a fight
- 35:13Speaker 1: if it's marketed halfway decently.
- 35:17Speaker 2: That's the thing right now.
- 35:18Speaker 1: You can't fight anybody else and get American eyeballs watch.
- 35:22Speaker 1: I think that's probably the biggest issue. So that's why
- 35:25Speaker 1: you hear his name being floated at this time.
- 35:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean are you personally would you be interested
- 35:31Speaker 3: to seeing this fight? Would you be excited for it?
- 35:33Speaker 2: Or is it like no, Wilder's cooks.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing, is I like watching fights when
- 35:38Speaker 1: there's a a you know, there's some decency of the
- 35:43Speaker 1: fight where the fight isn't the bouts where we know, hey,
- 35:46Speaker 1: both guys can win. I don't see that here, Like
- 35:48Speaker 1: Deontay Wilder is so far beyond his prime, even though
- 35:52Speaker 1: during his prime is heavily flawed. So now you're asking
- 35:56Speaker 1: a guy that's about to be damn near forty fight
- 35:59Speaker 1: someone that is really good. I just don't see it,
- 36:03Speaker 1: Like I don't. I'm gonna play and watch, but I'm
- 36:07Speaker 1: not gonna be happy about it.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Sure, i'll watch it again. I'll watch pretty much anybody fight.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Uh So, But yeah, in terms of like, there's no
- 36:17Speaker 3: at least Fury was like a gigantic, just slab of
- 36:21Speaker 3: meat that would give somebody trouble to you know, uh
- 36:24Speaker 3: to put down or like. And he was talented enough,
- 36:26Speaker 3: moved well enough. Uh So that was at least competitive.
- 36:30Speaker 3: I can't see while they're putting up anything against Ustik,
- 36:32Speaker 3: another guy with not really a lot of game plans,
- 36:35Speaker 3: you know, great power. Definitely he could catch. Here's the
- 36:40Speaker 3: if you get caught with a dance while their power shot,
- 36:42Speaker 3: it doesn't matter how good you are, Like if you
- 36:44Speaker 3: have kata kat, you're you're out for the count. So
- 36:46Speaker 3: I'm not gonna say that it's not possible. But I
- 36:48Speaker 3: just don't see all this a sudden usic is just
- 36:51Speaker 3: too good on his feet, move too fast for something
- 36:55Speaker 3: like that great ring I q as well, honestly, like
- 36:59Speaker 3: I don't I don't even know what to expect, Like
- 37:03Speaker 3: could he knock the out potentially?
- 37:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, but he definitely can. But also, here's the
- 37:09Speaker 2: thing too, Deontay Wilder's camps in his corner had been
- 37:13Speaker 2: shitty throughout his career. Like you can tell, his training
- 37:16Speaker 2: camps have not been great. The corners are not preparing
- 37:20Speaker 2: him the best of these fights.
- 37:22Speaker 1: It's just a very good athlete with amazing punching power
- 37:25Speaker 1: with one hand, and he's gotten by as far as
- 37:29Speaker 1: he can go. With that being said, there again, there's
- 37:32Speaker 1: any adjustments in a fight, he's puzzled. He looks like
- 37:35Speaker 1: he's looking at Excel. If y'all don't know about Excel.
- 37:38Speaker 1: There's people out there who talk through on their resume
- 37:41Speaker 1: talking about they know excel. They get a spreadsheet thrown
- 37:44Speaker 1: in front of him and they walk out the interview.
- 37:45Speaker 1: They don't know excel. That's Deontay Wilder in a round
- 37:48Speaker 1: five when the boxer makes adjustments.
- 37:50Speaker 2: Gonna know what to do.
- 37:52Speaker 1: He's getting clocked repeatedly in the fights in jeopardy nah, man,
- 37:56Speaker 1: I'm cool.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I'm cool. I'm all the way good, and I like wad.
- 38:02Speaker 1: I have nothing against him. I am not you know,
- 38:05Speaker 1: I've enjoyed a lot of his fights over the years.
- 38:07Speaker 1: But I've seen this story before. I've seen this movie before,
- 38:11Speaker 1: and you're asking a guy that fights every two years
- 38:14Speaker 1: basically to come back and fight the world headway champion
- 38:16Speaker 1: of the world.
- 38:17Speaker 2: I'm cool, man, I don't even see this ship I'm cool, man.
- 38:23Speaker 2: I don't want to see a brother get knocked out.
- 38:24Speaker 2: And for everybody, I'm gonna give you Hoscar, I don't
- 38:26Speaker 2: want to see that ship.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Man thing.
- 38:32Speaker 2: The second and third fight versus Old Boy was bad enough.
- 38:37Speaker 2: It was bad. That's the third one was bad. We
- 38:39Speaker 2: you knew it was like no one boxing. You know
- 38:41Speaker 2: what a guy goes.
- 38:41Speaker 1: You know the guys gonna try you. You know you
- 38:43Speaker 1: can tell like, hey man, this ain't good, this ain't good,
- 38:46Speaker 1: and yeah, man, we don't need and that was a
- 38:51Speaker 1: couple of years ago. We don't need to see that.
- 38:53Speaker 2: There's nothing in this outside of the cash drab, nothing good.
- 38:58Speaker 3: So I'm cool.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I mean, and they're gonna do what they're gonna do it,
- 39:01Speaker 2: But I'm cool. I'm cool, very well to three.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Another one I saw in the movie theater that was
- 39:07Speaker 3: Got twenty twenty one, Holy Craptas twenty twenty one according
- 39:12Speaker 3: to this Yeah, because that was yep, October till I remember.
- 39:17Speaker 3: That was just just when things were like kind of
- 39:20Speaker 3: opening up after the Rona Wow. So yeah, yeah, great night,
- 39:26Speaker 3: really really fun fun time watching that whole night of
- 39:28Speaker 3: boxing theater. I snuck in a bunch of little mini
- 39:30Speaker 3: bottles of booze. There's a liquor store, like a drive
- 39:32Speaker 3: through liquor store by my place, and I went there
- 39:34Speaker 3: and I said, hey, man, can I get like four
- 39:36Speaker 3: little bottles of like rum because I was gonna mix
- 39:39Speaker 3: it in my coke, I see. And then guy was like, hey,
- 39:41Speaker 3: hey man, you know if you just buy this the
- 39:43Speaker 3: whole bottle, it's cheaper, it's better for you. And I
- 39:46Speaker 3: said all I said was, uh no, man, I gotta
- 39:48Speaker 3: go to h And he goes, oh, you have to
- 39:50Speaker 3: hide it. I got you.
- 39:51Speaker 2: I got you. Don't worry.
- 39:51Speaker 3: No, I live in the ghetto. They know what's up.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It's a game. The game game. It's all good.
- 39:58Speaker 3: But yeah, by the point, that was a really really fun,
- 40:01Speaker 3: uh night, of boxing again to see the theater. That's
- 40:04Speaker 3: a great fight. But yeah, man, I honestly, I'd be honestly,
- 40:08Speaker 3: I was surprised that Deontay Wilder even came back to
- 40:10Speaker 3: fight again after that.
- 40:13Speaker 1: You're saying saying, but the money's good, man, the box
- 40:15Speaker 1: of money is very good. I know someone who's on
- 40:18Speaker 1: the other side of that, one who was involved in
- 40:20Speaker 1: the training for his opponent that fight and the amount
- 40:24Speaker 1: of money being talked about was very good for a
- 40:26Speaker 1: short amount of time, very very good. So everybody, everybody
- 40:30Speaker 1: picture was getting paid very very good money. So I
- 40:33Speaker 1: get why he came back. And hell, if you're gonna
- 40:35Speaker 1: get twenty million dollars or thirty million dollars to come
- 40:37Speaker 1: back and fight in this economy, shit, you might as
- 40:40Speaker 1: well because you ain't getting that in two years. So
- 40:43Speaker 1: if you got a chance to get it, now, put
- 40:45Speaker 1: your eight weeks of training and see what you got.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:49Speaker 3: The more the more I hate you talking that, the
- 40:51Speaker 3: more I'm with you. I'm like, man, that don't give
- 40:53Speaker 3: a shit about this fight. But but it is a
- 40:57Speaker 3: how about this? It's a bigger deal that Usik is
- 40:59Speaker 3: coming back on see it, Like I'm I also would
- 41:02Speaker 3: have expected him to retire after the Fury fight. Sokay,
- 41:06Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean another thing here that I
- 41:09Speaker 3: wanted to do again is go through these rankings. And
- 41:13Speaker 3: what's crazy more than anything is that like I see
- 41:17Speaker 3: the only American names that I see that I know,
- 41:20Speaker 3: or like Deontay Wilder and Jared the big baby Anderson
- 41:23Speaker 3: who didn't come to you know, uh was hyped a
- 41:26Speaker 3: lot but didn't come too much, and all these are
- 41:28Speaker 3: you know, British is like European guys. There's a guy
- 41:31Speaker 3: named Michael Hunter. I don't know who's American. I don't
- 41:34Speaker 3: if I've seen him fight, I don't know off the
- 41:36Speaker 3: top of my head.
- 41:36Speaker 1: But like the.
- 41:37Speaker 3: Heavyweight class today is just like it's it's it's puzzling
- 41:41Speaker 3: to me, like I don't know who the next pixed
- 41:43Speaker 3: star is, who's upcoming. People are trying to tell me
- 41:47Speaker 3: that Richard Torres Junior is is a is a name
- 41:51Speaker 3: to watch. I've seen him fight a bunch of cheeseburgers
- 41:55Speaker 3: when he ever he fights, so I don't really know
- 41:57Speaker 3: what his skill set is. Uh. I saw him fight
- 42:01Speaker 3: in person at in Phoenix last year, and I'm sorry,
- 42:04Speaker 3: he just bought fought a big fat guy. It was
- 42:07Speaker 3: just a big fat guy. So so yeah, I don't know.
- 42:10Speaker 3: I mean, we're do you have any thoughts about where
- 42:13Speaker 3: the heavyweight boxing class is, and you know, historically it's
- 42:17Speaker 3: dominated by American fighters, Black American fighters.
- 42:20Speaker 2: It's trash. It's trash. But a lot of guys, a
- 42:22Speaker 2: lot of big guys aren't fighting no more. A lot
- 42:24Speaker 2: of guys are doing other sports. I mean, it's just
- 42:26Speaker 2: not it's hard convincing a person.
- 42:29Speaker 1: That is six' five to forty or above to, Fight,
- 42:33Speaker 1: like there's other sports you can participate, in there's other
- 42:36Speaker 1: ways to make. Money it's not the old days. Anymore
- 42:39Speaker 1: so convincing someone to actually fight is a you, know
- 42:44Speaker 1: it's not like it used to. Be with so many
- 42:46Speaker 1: other options, now even if you're six four to, ten
- 42:50Speaker 1: if you're growing up, now you're kind of getting pushed
- 42:53Speaker 1: INTO ufc before boxing these days in certain. Parts so
- 42:57Speaker 1: just the amount of options and things that people of
- 43:01Speaker 1: The headway stature have now is just way different than.
- 43:03Speaker 1: Before but also boxing at marketed like, that like the
- 43:07Speaker 1: heavyweight division's been marketing in like four, years but just in,
- 43:11Speaker 1: general like we, don't LIKE i, said we don't.
- 43:13Speaker 2: Know THERE'S i DON'T i can't hit. You Last headway
- 43:16Speaker 2: Fight i've watched ON. Tv, YEAH i.
- 43:23Speaker 3: Missed Oosick Versus fury two BECAUSE i was traveling FOR
- 43:27Speaker 3: i was In california for A buddies memorial that passed,
- 43:29Speaker 3: away uh, so AND i was trying to find, it
- 43:32Speaker 3: AND i WAS i was calling sports bars out In,
- 43:34Speaker 3: california Said, lucibispo see if anybody was playing the, fight
- 43:36Speaker 3: and everybody's, like, no we don't do pay per. VIEWS
- 43:38Speaker 3: i don't. Know if it's just it wasn't popular enough
- 43:41Speaker 3: that they wasn't justifying the. COST i don't, know BUT
- 43:44Speaker 3: i wanted to watch the, fight AND i had time
- 43:45Speaker 3: after the, memorial but, LIKE i couldn't find it playing.
- 43:48Speaker 3: ANYWHERE i literally was at a bar after the morreal
- 43:51Speaker 3: like looking at the recaps on some, website like you,
- 43:54Speaker 3: know Some british thing like The guardian or, whatever and
- 43:56Speaker 3: was reading the round by round breakdown of the. Fight so,
- 44:00Speaker 3: yeah LIKE i, tried and to be, fair you, know
- 44:03Speaker 3: we're talking about a town, suddenly So obispo is like
- 44:05Speaker 3: it seems to be kind of, remote, Smaller, yeah, no, no,
- 44:12Speaker 3: yeah IF i could have been to L. A you,
- 44:13Speaker 3: know IF i was IN la then you, Know i'm
- 44:15Speaker 3: SURE i could have found it. Anywhere so there's. That but,
- 44:19Speaker 3: yeah that was, uh that was kind of. INTERESTING i was,
- 44:22Speaker 3: LIKE i have the, TIME i can go anywhere they're playing.
- 44:25Speaker 3: IT i don't, have LIKE i was, saying at a,
- 44:28Speaker 3: hotel SO i can just pay per view it, myself you. Know,
- 44:31Speaker 3: uh but that was a. YEAH i, Mean usik is
- 44:35Speaker 3: kind of like the big name that has been the
- 44:39Speaker 3: most interesting, talented you, know big star and heavyweight That
- 44:42Speaker 3: i've really cared about here though he's not a big star, here,
- 44:49Speaker 3: No BUT i but most boxing, fans even people who
- 44:52Speaker 3: are like not super into, Boxing, NO i think they
- 44:54Speaker 3: Know whousik. Is. Uh maybe if the casual, FANS i don't.
- 44:58Speaker 3: KNOW i mean, Uh AND i think people knew Who
- 45:00Speaker 3: Tyson fury. Was but also because he just wouldn't shut the.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Hell up and he trained a lot, Here Tyson fury
- 45:07Speaker 1: was in THE us more AND i think he even
- 45:11Speaker 1: fought in The states more than other. Guys but with
- 45:14Speaker 1: that being, said Fighting wilder three times was very. BIG
- 45:20Speaker 1: i think all fights took place in The states from
- 45:22Speaker 1: not mistaken fight win was IN.
- 45:24Speaker 2: LA i remember THAT i Believe fight two was here In.
- 45:28Speaker 2: Vegas i'm not.
- 45:29Speaker 1: Mistaken so it's one of those things to where the
- 45:33Speaker 1: cat and he's a different cat, obviously so his antics
- 45:37Speaker 1: are being talked, about looked at differently and by casual
- 45:40Speaker 1: people and. Whatnot SO i can see that being a
- 45:44Speaker 1: little bit different for him than other. Guys with that being,
- 45:48Speaker 1: Said Beyontay watterson is for a. Check he just turned.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Forty if you weren't good at making adjustments ten years,
- 45:55Speaker 1: ago damn, sure not gonna be good at making adjustments
- 45:58Speaker 1: at forty, plus Man, Like BUT.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I get it if they give you eight for the
- 46:03Speaker 2: fight you kind of got to. Take AND i don't blame,
- 46:06Speaker 2: THEM i, don't but damn.
- 46:09Speaker 3: SURE i, mean yeah, this how about this, One, deontay
- 46:12Speaker 3: we love. You definitely take to a sick, fight get
- 46:15Speaker 3: your pay, day then walk away, please like you, know
- 46:17Speaker 3: we don't need to keep doing you.
- 46:18Speaker 2: Know maybe, YEAH i hope your money is.
- 46:21Speaker 1: GOOD i don't like count people's, pockets that's not my,
- 46:23Speaker 1: business BUT i hope your money's straight BECAUSE i don't
- 46:25Speaker 1: want you to keep on taking these fights because they
- 46:29Speaker 1: haven't been.
- 46:29Speaker 2: Pretty like that's the. Thing they have not been.
- 46:32Speaker 1: Pretty and, again LIKE i, said the the Third fury
- 46:35Speaker 1: fight was in twenty, one we're about to be five
- 46:38Speaker 1: years away.
- 46:39Speaker 2: From, that which is.
- 46:40Speaker 3: Wild, yeah so he now he did fight a couple
- 46:45Speaker 3: of different. People, okay look this up because, no it
- 46:49Speaker 3: was like names Like Robert, hilenius WHO i kind of,
- 46:51Speaker 3: Know Joseph, PARKER i know who that, is Uh zelee.
- 46:55Speaker 3: Saying but here's the. Thing after he took the l Against,
- 46:58Speaker 3: fury he won against Uh. Heillnious but then he took
- 47:01Speaker 3: twols in a, row, right and then we talked about.
- 47:06Speaker 3: This earlier this, year he knocked Out Tyrol Anthony herndon
- 47:12Speaker 3: and that was UH i think it was on that
- 47:15Speaker 3: streaming service he talked About Black prime Be Okay, prime,
- 47:17Speaker 3: yep that that it was. On so so It's i'm
- 47:20Speaker 3: not gonna say as LIKE i, say he hasn't been.
- 47:22Speaker 3: Active you know he, Has like he's been more active
- 47:25Speaker 3: than my fat ass. Has i'm just saying, that you,
- 47:27Speaker 3: know we haven't really hasn't fought big. Names he hasn't
- 47:30Speaker 3: been a, Draw LIKE i missed most of. THEM i
- 47:33Speaker 3: remember him Fighting. Hillnious i'm pretty SURE i saw that.
- 47:36Speaker 3: One but there's three others THAT i JUST i just,
- 47:40Speaker 3: missed you know WHAT i. Mean and Again i'm SAYING
- 47:42Speaker 3: i like the. Guy so this is gonna be eight.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Kids you can be fighting for a while forty forty,
- 47:49Speaker 3: five forty eight ye Ow Wiler Jesus.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Christ for, kids he can be fighting for a. Minute so.
- 47:58Speaker 3: So so we can say that this is his biggest
- 48:02Speaker 3: fight against the biggest name since twenty twenty. One so
- 48:05Speaker 3: that is correct some stuff in. Between SO i don't.
- 48:08Speaker 3: Know i'll watch, it. DEFINITELY i was maybe a little
- 48:12Speaker 3: bit more, Curious i'll say before we started this conversation,
- 48:17Speaker 3: now like like IF i got a, Pee i'll just
- 48:20Speaker 3: go pee whenever if it's in the middle of the.
- 48:23Speaker 1: Fight, man look, here he got eight. Kids he's gonna
- 48:26Speaker 1: be fighting until he can't fight no. More, yeah that's
- 48:29Speaker 1: why he said that fight and he's, married. Divorce there's
- 48:33Speaker 1: child sport. Involved he will be fighting for a. While
- 48:35Speaker 1: jesus eight, kids wild, though but there we don't have.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Kids one kid as wild as far As i'm.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Concerned he's a basketball. Team you can play a basketball.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Game there's too.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Much that's The wilder family basketball. Team that's a very good.
- 48:53Speaker 1: Place.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Yeah uh, Nope i'm good on. That you want to
- 48:57Speaker 3: talk about being good on, something it's good on having
- 48:59Speaker 3: any kids much less Eight. Jesus, well that's about the
- 49:05Speaker 3: biggest things that were in the news for this coming, year,
- 49:07Speaker 3: which by the, Way New year right around the. Corner
- 49:10Speaker 3: so but, yeah let's switch switch gears move into our
- 49:14Speaker 3: recurring segment called Pop, pugilism in which we discussed a,
- 49:17Speaker 3: MOVIE tv show or documentary about. Boxing this was a
- 49:21Speaker 3: very very different movie boxing, adjacent BUT i was really
- 49:24Speaker 3: excited to talk about it BECAUSE i think we can
- 49:26Speaker 3: have a good conversation and tie it into a lot
- 49:28Speaker 3: of stuff that we discussed on the Show One night
- 49:31Speaker 3: In miami from twenty, twenty directed By Regina. King the
- 49:36Speaker 3: story is about it's based out of. Play so the
- 49:40Speaker 3: story is About Muhammad ali back when he was Still Casius.
- 49:43Speaker 3: Clay his mom named Him, clay people called Him clay
- 49:45Speaker 3: at that. Time became a heavyweight champion Against Sunny listen
- 49:48Speaker 3: in sixty three and then met up With MALCOLM, X Jim,
- 49:52Speaker 3: Brown Sam cook and a lot of conversations about race
- 49:55Speaker 3: relations and race at the. Time and, yeah this is
- 49:59Speaker 3: the movie THAT i heard, about, honestly even more so
- 50:02Speaker 3: than this movie being About Muhammad. ALI i was most
- 50:05Speaker 3: interested in it because it was directed By Regina. KING
- 50:07Speaker 3: i didn't know that she she directed a bunch OF
- 50:09Speaker 3: tv for, this this is her, first uh, right feature.
- 50:12Speaker 3: Film always Like Regina, king always cool to see her
- 50:15Speaker 3: show up and. Stuff SO i was just. Here the problem, is,
- 50:18Speaker 3: honestly all these like straight To prime, videos straight To netflix, stuff, man,
- 50:22Speaker 3: LIKE i miss a lot of, it even Stuff i'm
- 50:24Speaker 3: interested in because it flies under the. Radar sometimes they
- 50:27Speaker 3: don't promote, it they just dump it, there and LIKE
- 50:30Speaker 3: i would have gone to see this in the movie.
- 50:31Speaker 3: Theater so it's there's a lot of stuff That i'm,
- 50:34Speaker 3: like oh, right that damn movie that was In netflix
- 50:37Speaker 3: last year THAT i was interested. In but that's that's
- 50:40Speaker 3: a whole other. Conversation before we get into, THIS i
- 50:43Speaker 3: just want to ask, You, jameson had you heard about the,
- 50:45Speaker 3: movie had you seen it it came out in twenty,
- 50:47Speaker 3: Twenty what's what's Your what do you think when.
- 50:49Speaker 1: The first thought it was a big, deal it was
- 50:51Speaker 1: a Huge here's the, thing anything With Muhammad ali in it.
- 50:55Speaker 2: Is gonna get instant, attention good, batter.
- 50:58Speaker 1: Ugly anything he's involved, with anything whatever they whether it's
- 51:02Speaker 1: once it will fight his, career pre impost ban, Everything
- 51:08Speaker 1: it's gonna be a lot of.
- 51:09Speaker 2: Tension and that's just how it always. Goes, so you,
- 51:11Speaker 2: KNOW i remember when this came, out it was. Cool
- 51:14Speaker 2: it was it was it was.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Cool it was. Cool i've seen a lot of different
- 51:23Speaker 1: things when it comes Up Han ali And MALCOLM x
- 51:26Speaker 1: And Jim brown like.
- 51:28Speaker 2: That one point in time during the, sixties they were
- 51:31Speaker 2: all on the same.
- 51:32Speaker 1: Team they were all battling against certain things and, all you,
- 51:36Speaker 1: know had a lot of things in. Common so it's
- 51:38Speaker 1: interesting to, see you, know basically fifty years, later you,
- 51:42Speaker 1: know someone kind of wrapping everything up and won and
- 51:46Speaker 1: trying to portray it to the younger, people people who
- 51:48Speaker 1: are not around or or unknown about certain.
- 51:50Speaker 2: Things but no very interesting. Though but also a big
- 51:54Speaker 2: part is this racing boxing.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Has always been the, thing AND i think that at
- 52:00Speaker 1: as a, whole we're never going to go away from.
- 52:04Speaker 2: That even not as black and, white but white Versus
- 52:07Speaker 2: Panic black and His Spanic.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Asian and White. Asian it's always going to be hell
- 52:14Speaker 1: underrated one Is asian And. Mexican that's a real underrated
- 52:18Speaker 1: racial one that no one talks. About but that's a
- 52:21Speaker 1: very very big, one very very big one that people
- 52:24Speaker 1: don't really mention a. Lot BUT i just think that
- 52:27Speaker 1: race and boxing carries a sport like it's basically what
- 52:31Speaker 1: we pride ourselves on in these big. Matchups and it's
- 52:35Speaker 1: been like that Since Jack johnson's the beginning of nineteen
- 52:38Speaker 1: hundreds to current. DAY i mean the fact that we
- 52:41Speaker 1: have certain guys, like for, INSTANCE i, think If i'm not,
- 52:45Speaker 1: mistaken ten's biggest fight money wise Is Ryan, garcia If
- 52:50Speaker 1: i'm not, Mistaken and a big part of that is
- 52:54Speaker 1: the two races that are.
- 52:55Speaker 2: INVOLVED a big part of that is, that so this
- 52:58Speaker 2: is how it.
- 52:59Speaker 1: Goes it's always fascinating to hear perspectives about how racial
- 53:03Speaker 1: and so.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Sociology things were back in those. Times, yeah.
- 53:14Speaker 3: Another REASON i was excited to talk about this is
- 53:15Speaker 3: because you, know the whole that the whole basis of our,
- 53:17Speaker 3: Show Mixed Company, podcast it's these issues of race and
- 53:21Speaker 3: boxing that we said from the, Beginning i've always said
- 53:24Speaker 3: we're not afraid to have those difficult. Discussions and you,
- 53:27Speaker 3: know we call out racism on in any area between
- 53:33Speaker 3: fans of any types of, fighters any racist of, fighters but,
- 53:36Speaker 3: really here's the. Thing i've spent a long, time you,
- 53:38Speaker 3: know you AND i we're almost, forty we're all world.
- 53:41Speaker 3: Men were washing And i'm sure you've heard the same.
- 53:42Speaker 3: Thing we spent a lot of time being told stop
- 53:45Speaker 3: bringing race and, everything stop bringing up race and, everything
- 53:48Speaker 3: putting race into everything where doesn't. Belong blah blah. Blah.
- 53:50Speaker 3: BRO i don't know about. You i'm not the one
- 53:52Speaker 3: that does that. Shit Like i'm just. Cool i'm cool with.
- 53:55Speaker 3: Everybody like it's other people that are racists that are
- 53:58Speaker 3: then bringing the you, know resentment against you, Know Muhammed
- 54:01Speaker 3: ali being you, know the beating a great white hope
- 54:05Speaker 3: to Defeat Mhammed ali and not just, him you, know
- 54:08Speaker 3: creating the Movie rocky because white fans were upset that
- 54:12Speaker 3: black heavyweight fighters were dominating throughout the, seventies, eighties. Nineties like, again,
- 54:18Speaker 3: yeah you Mentioned Jack johnson from the early nineteen, hundreds you,
- 54:22Speaker 3: know him being a black the first black heavyweight champion
- 54:26Speaker 3: was the worst possible thing for White, America like they,
- 54:29Speaker 3: were you're fucking furious about. It it was a slap
- 54:33Speaker 3: in the, Face like my man just wanted to be
- 54:36Speaker 3: able to fight and fight the champion and get a
- 54:37Speaker 3: chance to win the. Belt but you, Could, yeah you
- 54:40Speaker 3: could never just be a black heavyweight fighter at any
- 54:45Speaker 3: time in the sport and not have the racial resentment
- 54:49Speaker 3: come along with. It i'm just, sorry you just. Can't
- 54:51Speaker 3: and they wanted to touch on.
- 54:53Speaker 1: Thinking about like this race and boxing is so crazy
- 54:57Speaker 1: that the seventies there was a bunch of black heavyweights
- 54:59Speaker 1: beating up on white guys and to dominate in the.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Division that they made a fictional character that they're still
- 55:05Speaker 1: making movie spin offs of. Today think about that forty
- 55:10Speaker 1: plus years, later The rocky franchise is still in.
- 55:14Speaker 3: Motion, yeah now this movie to weave back and forth
- 55:23Speaker 3: between these conversations of this. Movie you, know it's a
- 55:26Speaker 3: bit of a trojan horse because it starts off being
- 55:28Speaker 3: About muhammedoli a, lot about boxing a. Lot but then
- 55:31Speaker 3: it every character and this gets their due and they
- 55:35Speaker 3: get to have a lot of interesting conversations about black
- 55:39Speaker 3: men In america at that time and their. Places, so for,
- 55:41Speaker 3: Example Sam cook was a, musician able to call him
- 55:47Speaker 3: The king Of, soul And MALCOLM x gets into him
- 55:51Speaker 3: for not doing enough for black, liberation for not writing
- 55:56Speaker 3: songs that are overly, political just kind of writing and
- 56:00Speaker 3: try to try to be. Popular Sam cook comes back, with,
- 56:02Speaker 3: Man i'm making, MONEY i have financial, freedom then you
- 56:05Speaker 3: all do blah. Blah and it's really really well, written really,
- 56:07Speaker 3: interesting AND i think very important to hear these different
- 56:13Speaker 3: perspectives of like everybody's right in their own, way because
- 56:16Speaker 3: they're they're making very very good logical points about you,
- 56:19Speaker 3: know their place in the, world et. Cetera and notes
- 56:23Speaker 3: to get your take on. This it seems to be
- 56:25Speaker 3: a little bit advanced racial. History it's not a one
- 56:28Speaker 3: oh one class because there's a lot of things that
- 56:30Speaker 3: are throwing out there that the, Beginning MALCOLM x is
- 56:33Speaker 3: talking about his issues with The nation Of islam And
- 56:36Speaker 3: LEWIS x, specifically no, indication no explanation that That's Lewis,
- 56:42Speaker 3: ferricahn who he, is what that. Was it just kind,
- 56:45Speaker 3: of you, know it just throws you in the. World
- 56:48Speaker 3: and there's some. Stuff you, Know i'm not the biggest
- 56:50Speaker 3: expert on race, mystory BUT i know some STUFF i
- 56:53Speaker 3: paid attention to. SCHOOL i also watch a lot of.
- 56:55Speaker 3: Movies so but it seemed like if you don't know
- 56:59Speaker 3: what some of this history of racial politics And malcolm
- 57:02Speaker 3: ICs and, background like you might be a little. Lost
- 57:03Speaker 3: what was your thought on?
- 57:04Speaker 1: That, YEAH i mean it was a complicated situation Because
- 57:07Speaker 1: malcolm xwra's person that was learning a lot of different
- 57:10Speaker 1: things and incorporating a lot of his learnings into life.
- 57:14Speaker 1: Choices so when you're constantly evolving as a, person when
- 57:18Speaker 1: you one day you might think something is the way
- 57:20Speaker 1: of life and you want something different that might change that,
- 57:23Speaker 1: ideology then, yeah you might try to explain that to
- 57:26Speaker 1: other people and try to change your life quickly as
- 57:29Speaker 1: possible or ways of thinking quickly as. Possible so when
- 57:33Speaker 1: you have that and you're involved with other people's, lives
- 57:36Speaker 1: there's a lot going. On SO i totally understand what
- 57:38Speaker 1: was going, on and especially back, then a lot of
- 57:40Speaker 1: things were a lot of things were changing at the same.
- 57:43Speaker 1: Time we didn't have the information we have. Today there's no,
- 57:47Speaker 1: YouTube there's no you, know so a lot of the
- 57:50Speaker 1: information people were getting they were getting in a way
- 57:53Speaker 1: to where when they got they got really getting double
- 57:55Speaker 1: checker or fact check or anything like. That what they,
- 57:57Speaker 1: got they made a, decision they wrote with, it and
- 58:00Speaker 1: that's what it. Was so when things happen like, that
- 58:03Speaker 1: a lot of decisions were. Made some were kind of some.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Work that's just how it.
- 58:06Speaker 3: Went, YEAH i think it did a really good job
- 58:11Speaker 3: of like every character had an important moment and got
- 58:14Speaker 3: to speak their peace and and sort of make make
- 58:16Speaker 3: a case for their for their belief, system you, know their. Philosophy,
- 58:19Speaker 3: uh really cool. Moments even something very Fascinating Jim brown
- 58:26Speaker 3: having a discussion With MALCOLM x about How MALCOLM x
- 58:28Speaker 3: is black but more light skinned and that being something
- 58:32Speaker 3: like a privileged in of. Itself that's something THAT i
- 58:34Speaker 3: would ever, Say uh that agree THAT i would. HAVE
- 58:37Speaker 3: i don't know enough to speak on, that but it
- 58:40Speaker 3: is something that is in, there and the discussion is.
- 58:42Speaker 3: Pretending it's like fascinating to hear and, learn and you,
- 58:45Speaker 3: know colorism is a big. Deal like that's the, thing,
- 58:48Speaker 3: right there's even for me like, yeah LIKE I i'm
- 58:52Speaker 3: proud as al Of, mexican but like there are natives
- 58:55Speaker 3: or Indigenous mexic people who are dark dark, dark and
- 58:59Speaker 3: those felk SKIN i feel That i'm more safe from
- 59:03Speaker 3: racism than those folks, are you know WHAT i. Mean
- 59:06Speaker 3: the difference is in skin tone are even brought up
- 59:08Speaker 3: and it's, Amazing it's just it's an amazing thing to,
- 59:11Speaker 3: see and all the performances were. Great absolutely got to
- 59:16Speaker 3: give a shout out to this young, Guy Eli gory
- 59:20Speaker 3: who Played Muhammad ali Or Cassius clay rather didn't know
- 59:23Speaker 3: who this guy. Was he donese a couple of movies
- 59:26Speaker 3: and a bunch OF Tv i'd never. SEEN i thought
- 59:28Speaker 3: it was totally. AWESOME i don't know what you thought
- 59:30Speaker 3: about his portrayal Of Muhammad. Ali we've seen a lot
- 59:32Speaker 3: of it now over the, years BUT i think he's
- 59:34Speaker 3: one of my. Favorites what did you?
- 59:35Speaker 1: Think very, good very very good for a lot Of
- 59:40Speaker 1: Muhama ali interpretations are the last twenty thirty years that
- 59:43Speaker 1: we've seen in.
- 59:44Speaker 2: Movies but NOW i did very, well did very very.
- 59:46Speaker 2: Well and, also just to be honest with, YOU.
- 59:50Speaker 1: I mean think it was so different back, then so
- 59:52Speaker 1: getting perspectives back then how things are now it's like
- 59:57Speaker 1: night and. Day so it's very. Fascinating but now it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: very very, good very very good. Film it's always mom
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: always on most people that you can make a piece
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: of art off a lot of different sections of his,
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: career and it's very interesting when you do that because
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: there's so many angles you can come approach it from
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: like the racial aspect of something that you don't even
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: think of until like probably the fourth to fifteen when
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: it comes. In so that's how you know you really
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: got somebody you can really dig deep and provide a
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: lot of great content.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: From.
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: Sure, yeah and the portrayal of this this this actor's
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: portrayal of him was very, felt very. Natural you. KNOW
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: i did like That ali movie That Michael man did
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: ALWAYS i Love Michael. Man Will SMITH i think did
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: a decent, job but it sounded for us like he
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: sounded like he was doing A Mohammad ali impression AND
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: i could not could not Extra kate Will smith from
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: the character or SORRY i. Couldn't they didn't blend together for.
- 1:00:56Speaker 3: Me this guy did a great. Job could also be
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: that he said he's lesser. Known see a lot of
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: different sides Of Mohammed, ali not just the boastful kind
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: of like you, know, braggadocious you, know really, funny, outgoing
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: but also more quiet moments praying With MALCOLM. X you
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: got to see a lot of just just a very
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: very nuanced, portrayal WHICH i thought was. Great the biggest
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: question here is it would this movie be worth watching
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: for boxing. FANS i, MEAN i, said boxing isn't really
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: really the, forefront especially not in the after the first.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: Third what are your thoughts on?
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: THAT i think it's worth, it, because to be honest with,
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: you here's the.
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: Thing we're about to come upon a time with nothing
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: ON tv right now between, now like the first week Of,
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: january ancient ON.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: Tv might as well give you a couple of hours
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: let it go and let or. SOMETHING i ain't not
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: wrong with.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: That, yeah if you gotta have some private's on. There
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: it's a it's a direct to prime video. Movie so
- 1:01:51Speaker 3: if you you, can you can put it. On most
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: people do Have. Prime so, yeah and this show we rate.
- 1:01:56Speaker 3: This we write movies out of four. Gloves what would
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: you give one night In miami from twenty twenty.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Three point five? Three every point? Five?
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Yeah, Nice i'd going three point seven.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: Five, okay this Is.
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: Yeah there's a lot of elements, here race relations and
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: history THAT i, SAID i know a little bit. About
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: not an expert by any, means but you, know very
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: enlightening for, me and learned a lot, about you, know
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: something more about race relations in the sixties and how
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: people saw saw themselves in the movement And, yeah really.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Cool very much a talk talk, movie so you, know
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: there's not a lot of action, here BUT i said
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: it's based on a, play so that's it's all based
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: mostly on one, set but very interesting and, YEAH i
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: think at the end of the, day the best thing
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: to say is learn. Something but if you're not going
- 1:02:46Speaker 3: to read a, book that's. Cool put on a movie
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: and learn, something, right, right, Right, yeah and check Out
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: Spike Lee's MALCOLM, x available in FOUR k from The Criterion.
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: COLLECTION i got that on the shelf in the living,

- 1:03:13Speaker 1: got some stuff come up the ending of the.
