Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Last Night Log. Warreon men's basketball team opened the season
- 0:04Speaker 1: in Las Vegas. They fell to Ohio State eighty seventy two.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Long Wearn struggle to shoot the ball well enough and
- 0:10Speaker 1: to stop Ohio State when they were knocking down ten
- 0:13Speaker 1: three pointers in the first half. They wound up a
- 0:17Speaker 1: fourteen for the ball game, but there were several reasons. Afterwards,
- 0:19Speaker 1: it visited with Long Worn's head coach Rodney Terry to
- 0:22Speaker 1: talk about the defeat. I know, forty minutes is a
- 0:25Speaker 1: lot of basketball, but the way that game started for
- 0:28Speaker 1: the first five minutes, when they just could not miss
- 0:30Speaker 1: from three point range, really kind of made it difficult,
- 0:32Speaker 1: didn't They.
- 0:33Speaker 2: We shoot a defense.
- 0:34Speaker 1: They're older guards.
- 0:35Speaker 2: If we knew, you know, getting Parish, you know, meet
- 0:37Speaker 2: you and those guys, they're real shooters, you know. And Thoughton,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you know, we played the way we thought he'd played
- 0:42Speaker 2: in terms of being an older guard and one of
- 0:44Speaker 2: the picking one of the better pick and roll.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Guys and all the college basketball.
- 0:48Speaker 2: They played like an experienced team, and then you know,
- 0:50Speaker 2: it came out we had hand down Mandewns and we
- 0:52Speaker 2: can't have hand down Mandews did a much better job
- 0:55Speaker 2: in the second half. I mean, obviously they had ten
- 0:58Speaker 2: threes in the first half, we gave up four to second.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You know the other thing too, you got a lot
- 1:02Speaker 1: of points off turnovers too. That helped kind of get
- 1:04Speaker 1: you back in the game.
- 1:05Speaker 2: We had opportunities, we really did. I mean, our guys
- 1:07Speaker 2: kept batting, we kept working the game. You know, we
- 1:10Speaker 2: get right there one position game and you know we
- 1:13Speaker 2: give up another big three rdy.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I thought their bench came off. The guys come off
- 1:18Speaker 1: the bench, really scored and really gave them a boost.
- 1:20Speaker 1: I thought that was one of the differences as well.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Well, when you the freshman kid would come in and
- 1:24Speaker 2: really be aggressive trying to score the basketball, and and
- 1:27Speaker 2: he did that. He came in and made I think
- 1:29Speaker 2: three four threes in the game and in the first half.
- 1:31Speaker 2: I think he had three three threes in the first half.
- 1:34Speaker 2: But we knew he was an aggressive player coming off
- 1:36Speaker 2: the bench when your glover could come in there and
- 1:39Speaker 2: and and play that way as well. But their guard
- 1:41Speaker 2: play was worth really outstanding the night.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Speaking of freshman kids, yours was pretty good tonight.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Trade the game or Trade played played well.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We got to get him a little bit more help
- 1:51Speaker 2: in regards to to getting some things done around him,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and we will, I mean, our guards will play better
- 1:57Speaker 2: than what we played tonight. We played better in the
- 1:59Speaker 2: eight minutes we've had to this point right now, but
- 2:03Speaker 2: we'll get better as the season goes.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Final thing here, Roddy, what are the things that you
- 2:08Speaker 1: want to emphasize with the guys this week leading up
- 2:10Speaker 1: to the home opener on Friday.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Well, we have to stay connected, you know what I mean.
- 2:13Speaker 2: I mean, you know, we have a culture that's built
- 2:16Speaker 2: on you know, you're gonna have adversity. Basketball is full
- 2:19Speaker 2: of adversity. You know you have to being a persevered
- 2:21Speaker 2: through adversity. But they stayed the course and continue to
- 2:24Speaker 2: work the game. And you know, you know, we got
- 2:27Speaker 2: a young team that's still or what a new team rather,
- 2:30Speaker 2: they're still trying to put it together a little bit
- 2:32Speaker 2: and stuff. But we'll get better as we continue to
- 2:34Speaker 2: battle through this season.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I appreciate the time, Roddie. Thanks. That's good. Yeah, that
- 2:39Speaker 1: was the postgame conversation with Roddy Terry talking about it
- 2:43Speaker 1: and again, a tough loss last night, but I'll tell
- 2:47Speaker 1: you there were some things to get excited about, most
- 2:50Speaker 1: notably the performance of trade John's I think we all
- 2:53Speaker 1: expected Trey to be pretty exciting to watch early on,
- 2:58Speaker 1: but for him to set a freshman debut record that
- 3:01Speaker 1: had been held by Kevin Durant by scoring twenty nine
- 3:05Speaker 1: points in the ballgame an affecting game, and he played
- 3:07Speaker 1: well on the defensive side as well. That was one
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the things that were that we were impressed with
- 3:11Speaker 1: to see is Trey Johnson played well and he picked
- 3:16Speaker 1: up some fouls on the second at but never got
- 3:18Speaker 1: himself in a serious foul trouble as he did in
- 3:21Speaker 1: the first two scrimmages.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I texted some friends before the game, I said, really
- 3:26Speaker 3: excited to see Trey Johnson break Katie's scoring debut record tonight.
- 3:30Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I don't know about that. You know, we'll see.
- 3:33Speaker 3: He hit fifteen before halftime, Craig, he was five away
- 3:35Speaker 3: from it. And the first couple of shots, I mean,
- 3:38Speaker 3: I think he missed the first two he took. But
- 3:40Speaker 3: his ability to just spot up anywhere on the floor,
- 3:45Speaker 3: to get set correctly, to get lined up, I mean,
- 3:49Speaker 3: I had not seen a college player like him. I
- 3:52Speaker 3: don't think ever. He's super exciting and the one thing
- 3:55Speaker 3: that stands out Craig is his passion. He's a fiery dude,
- 3:58Speaker 3: and he likes to talk to his teammates in the
- 4:00Speaker 3: huddle out of plays. I mean, there was one play
- 4:04Speaker 3: in the corner where he flexed the ball out of
- 4:06Speaker 3: bounce and I think it was Texas basketball. We could
- 4:09Speaker 3: hear him scream from the concourse level, and that's a
- 4:12Speaker 3: type of passion that I think is going to help
- 4:14Speaker 3: this team. Not the result obviously they wanted last night,
- 4:18Speaker 3: but they're going to be okay with Trey Johnson.
- 4:20Speaker 1: He was ten for twenty from the floor, five of
- 4:23Speaker 1: ten from three point range, four of five from the
- 4:25Speaker 1: foul line.
- 4:26Speaker 3: He added five.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Rebounds, four assists, one turnover, and two steals in thirty
- 4:31Speaker 1: nine minutes. He played all but a minute of the game,
- 4:34Speaker 1: So yeah, keep an eye on him. Home opener is
- 4:36Speaker 1: Friday night for Texas As. They will host Houston Christian.
- 4:41Speaker 1: We'll be back to wrap up Hour number two on
- 4:43Speaker 1: Sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
