- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:27Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33When I was 18 years old, the fall
- 0:35after I graduated from high school, I moved
- 0:38down to Peru in South America for a
- 0:41nine-month internship with the Anglican Church of
- 0:44Peru.
- 0:44And I did a lot of things.
- 0:46I worked with students in an after-school
- 0:48program through Compassion International.
- 0:50I helped out with youth ministry.
- 0:53And because I was just sort of a
- 0:54free hand on deck, they would send me
- 0:56all over the place in the Diocese of
- 0:58Peru to help out with different projects.
- 1:00And for my sake, that I could learn
- 1:01different things.
- 1:02So I was in Lima to begin with,
- 1:04which is this giant city, bigger than Chicago,
- 1:06population-wise.
- 1:07Very complex history.
- 1:08And we would go out to what were
- 1:10called the pueblos jóvenes, or young towns, which
- 1:13were almost these like shantytown-like establishments and
- 1:16communities.
- 1:16But some of them were quite old.
- 1:18And kind of from the city to the
- 1:20far exterior, there was less and less development
- 1:23and more and more poverty.
- 1:25And so we got way out there in,
- 1:27you know, in the U.S. we'd say
- 1:28way out in the boonies.
- 1:30And there would be a church where the
- 1:32walls of the church sanctuary were literally made
- 1:34out of like recycled cardboard boxes.
- 1:36And there was a priest that would take
- 1:38the bus out there and do a little
- 1:39Eucharist service in the cardboard box church, essentially,
- 1:43for people who lived in this abject poverty.
- 1:46And their homes, often similarly, were just sort
- 1:48of made out of found materials.
- 1:51Bootlegged electricity to try and get things working.
- 1:53People who were maybe trying to find things
- 1:56in garbage dumps in order to resell them
- 1:57and eke out a living.
- 1:59This kind of level of poverty.
- 2:01And it was incredible to see the genuine
- 2:02faith and love of Peruvian Christians in this
- 2:06context.
- 2:06And also the faithfulness of those priests being
- 2:09on mission in these harsh and difficult environments.
- 2:12I'm really glad for that experience.
- 2:15But there was an image that I had
- 2:18that I found so fascinating.
- 2:20And that was the image of nursing mothers
- 2:22in this context.
- 2:24There's this kind of like a body wrap
- 2:26sling that was very common, where mothers would
- 2:29just carry their babies with them wherever they
- 2:31were going, even while they were working.
- 2:32And that would allow them, they could just
- 2:34switch quickly from whatever task they were doing
- 2:36to nurse their baby, if their baby needed
- 2:38to nurse.
- 2:39There was also a public health campaign trying
- 2:41to encourage nursing versus formula.
- 2:44And it would have these wonderful photos of
- 2:46like husband and wife together and their baby
- 2:48and they're looking at the baby or even
- 2:50mom's nursing the baby.
- 2:51And it would say, la leche de mama
- 2:53es el mejor.
- 2:54Mom's milk is best.
- 2:56And trying to encourage people, if they could,
- 2:58to do nursing in the traditional way with
- 3:01their babies rather than using formula.
- 3:03Now obviously, the formula is a gift for
- 3:05people who can't do traditional nursing for different
- 3:08ways.
- 3:09But there's something incredible there in just that
- 3:12image of a nursing mother.
- 3:14And for those of us who are disciples
- 3:16of Jesus, who believe that God created human
- 3:19beings in his image, I think there's something
- 3:21there about God's love and his intention for
- 3:25life that we can sort of see in
- 3:27a concrete way when there's a mother holding
- 3:31her child, nursing her child.
- 3:33I want to go to a verse that
- 3:35actually refers to this image to talk about
- 3:38work.
- 3:38So it might seem like maybe a juncture
- 3:42that you weren't expecting.
- 3:42What can nursing mothers teach us about our
- 3:45everyday work as disciples of Jesus?
- 3:47But I think the answer is quite a
- 3:48bit.
- 3:48So this is in First Thessalonians, and this
- 3:52is one of Paul's letters.
- 3:53So it's Paul writing.
- 3:54He's writing to Christians in the city of
- 3:56Thessaloniki or Thessalonica.
- 3:59And this is starting in verse 7.
- 4:01He's kind of describing his relationship with this
- 4:04community when he was there earlier, the way
- 4:06that he and other apostolic leaders were acting
- 4:09toward them.
- 4:09So Paul writes, OK,
- 4:33what's Paul doing?
- 4:34Well, he uses this image of being gentle
- 4:37with the Thessalonians, like a nursing mother taking
- 4:41care of her own children.
- 4:42But this isn't just an accidental image.
- 4:44It's not just like Paul is trying to
- 4:45find some cutesy image to use, because then
- 4:47he goes on and he says, what were
- 4:49they sharing with the Thessalonians?
- 4:51What were Paul and the other apostles sharing?
- 4:54We were ready to share with you not
- 4:56only the gospel of God, but also our
- 4:59own selves.
- 5:01So he's saying, like, think about the image
- 5:03of a breastfeeding mother.
- 5:05What is she giving to the baby?
- 5:07She's giving her own self, her own milk
- 5:09with her own body to the baby.
- 5:12That's the way that she loves, by giving
- 5:14her very self to the baby as an
- 5:17act of love.
- 5:18Paul says, That's how we were with you
- 5:21all in your community.
- 5:22We were ready not just to share the
- 5:24gospel with you, but to also share our
- 5:27own selves with you.
- 5:29And if you know Paul's writing, it's very
- 5:31strange to have him say, not only the
- 5:34gospel, because Paul's all about how the gospel
- 5:36is everything, right?
- 5:37Like, what could Paul possibly say?
- 5:38Not only the gospel.
- 5:39Like, what could be better than the gospel
- 5:40that he would share with them?
- 5:42He says, not only the gospel, but also
- 5:44our own selves.
- 5:45Right?
- 5:46So, so not that Paul is somehow better
- 5:48news than the good news about Jesus, but
- 5:49there's an intimacy of sharing that Paul engaged
- 5:53in, that he kind of took that risk
- 5:55of being really present with the Thessalonians, offering
- 5:58his own life to them.
- 6:00And he did this in very practical ways.
- 6:02He kind of goes on later in the
- 6:03same part of the letter to talk about
- 6:05how, you know, he worked a day job
- 6:07so that he wouldn't be financially dependent on
- 6:08them while he was sharing the good news
- 6:10so that they could trust his message.
- 6:12So this shows us that there's this image
- 6:15of self-giving love that's honored in scripture.
- 6:20Okay.
- 6:21Now I want to pause there.
- 6:22We're going to come back to the idea
- 6:24of self-giving love, but go back to
- 6:27an image where we started this series.
- 6:29So you might remember, I referenced this philosopher
- 6:31called Polanyi, and he had this image of
- 6:34somebody walking with a cane, someone who couldn't
- 6:37see, and how that person would, would have
- 6:40certain feelings and sensations in their hand.
- 6:42And that would tell them, Oh, like this
- 6:44is a sidewalk.
- 6:44This is a wall, right?
- 6:46Like the, the sensations in their hand begin
- 6:48to have a meaning.
- 6:49It's not just about feeling in their hand.
- 6:51It's a meaning about the world around them.
- 6:54And this is how a whole bunch of
- 6:57different kinds of human communication works.
- 6:58But one of the ways that we can
- 7:01apply this idea is that our lives have
- 7:04a meaning.
- 7:05Our bodies have a meaning.
- 7:08So even in that image, that image of
- 7:11a nursing mother with her child, that's not
- 7:13just a biological accident.
- 7:16That's not just the result of a random
- 7:19chance through millions of years of evolution, although
- 7:21it's possible that God may have used that
- 7:24process in creation.
- 7:26No, that's, that's an image of God's love.
- 7:30The kind of love that God gives us
- 7:32is gift of the self love.
- 7:34There's a meaning to that picture of the
- 7:37body.
- 7:38Okay.
- 7:39Where do we see this, this idea of
- 7:41the, the meaning of the body in scripture?
- 7:44I want to go back to Genesis two.
- 7:46So we talked about this in our previous
- 7:48episode, how we can kind of be tempted
- 7:50to use this, this projected self, the false
- 7:52self, just like in Genesis three, Adam and
- 7:55Eve, you know, they, they sewed coverings for
- 7:57themselves because they were ashamed.
- 7:59But before that, what was the image?
- 8:01Genesis two, verse 25, Adam and his wife
- 8:04were both naked and they felt no shame.
- 8:08So it's referring to their bodies.
- 8:10It's saying Adam and Eve each had a
- 8:11body created by God and they felt no
- 8:14shame about their body.
- 8:15There was a meaningfulness.
- 8:17There was a meaning in their body.
- 8:19What was the meaning of their body?
- 8:21Let's, let's rewind.
- 8:22Let's rewind.
- 8:23What, where did their bodies come from?
- 8:25We know that God created Adam from the
- 8:28dust of the earth, right?
- 8:29But he also gave, uh, gave Adam a
- 8:32job to do.
- 8:34So this is kind of interesting how work
- 8:37is connected to this image of self-giving
- 8:39love right from the beginning, right?
- 8:42So Genesis chapter two, verse 15, the Lord
- 8:45God took the man and put him in
- 8:47the garden of Eden to work it and
- 8:49take care of it.
- 8:50This is even before Eve hits the scene.
- 8:52Adam has a job to do.
- 8:53The man has a job to do, to
- 8:55work the garden and take care of it.
- 8:58Skip a couple of verses later, verse 18,
- 9:00the Lord God said, it is not good
- 9:02for the man to be alone, I will
- 9:04make a helper suitable for him.
- 9:08Okay.
- 9:08Now that word helper can get thrown out
- 9:10of whack in different ways as the women
- 9:11are somehow subservient to men or whatever.
- 9:12That word helper is used to describe God
- 9:14himself elsewhere in the scriptures.
- 9:16The reason it's significant though, is that Eve
- 9:19comes into existence within the context of work
- 9:21that needs to be done.
- 9:23This is how closely connected this idea of
- 9:26human personhood and the human body and the
- 9:29dignity of work are, that Adam has a
- 9:31body and then he gets a job.
- 9:33And then while he's doing his job, God
- 9:35is like, he needs somebody to help him
- 9:37do his job better.
- 9:38He can't, he can't handle it by himself.
- 9:39This is not good.
- 9:40Uh, okay.
- 9:41So now we'll create another body that's different
- 9:44than his, but that goes together with his,
- 9:45and then they can do the job together
- 9:47and that's kind of God's vision for creation.
- 9:50So this, this self-giving love is like
- 9:53the meaning of the human body and the
- 9:55context for self-giving love, even at the
- 9:58very beginning was just normal everyday work.
- 10:01Okay.
- 10:02A lot of concepts going on here.
- 10:03Let's keep going.
- 10:04Stay with me.
- 10:05Stay with me.
- 10:05Okay.
- 10:06So this idea of there's self-giving love.
- 10:09That's the kind of love that God has
- 10:11for us.
- 10:12Our bodies show that self-giving love.
- 10:14They're like an image of that self-giving
- 10:16love and the context for that self-giving
- 10:19love from the beginning was everyday work.
- 10:22Okay.
- 10:23How can we put all of those concepts
- 10:25together?
- 10:26I would put it like this.
- 10:29Your everyday work is where you give the
- 10:32gift of yourself to other people.
- 10:34And that shows them something about God.
- 10:38Your everyday work is where you give the
- 10:41gift of yourself to other people.
- 10:42And that's what shows them something about God.
- 10:46Just like the body has a meaning and
- 10:48it communicates there's a, there's a God of
- 10:50love.
- 10:50Our bodies somehow mean that you, as you
- 10:53do your work communicate, there is a God
- 10:56of love.
- 10:57And so there's an irreducibly human element to
- 11:00work.
- 11:00And this is really important as we think
- 11:02about AI and what can machines do versus
- 11:04what people do.
- 11:05There's this irreducible human element of work.
- 11:08And, and I would say that irreducible human
- 11:10element is the capacity to do the work
- 11:12with love, right?
- 11:14The AI as efficient as it's going to
- 11:16get, it's never going to love anybody.
- 11:17It's never going to do its work out
- 11:18of the motive of love.
- 11:20And yet we, as human beings, we can
- 11:22do that.
- 11:22We can work out of love.
- 11:25So just to kind of a quick image
- 11:27of this, of like, what does, what does
- 11:29this look like in practical terms, like in
- 11:30the work environment, giving the gift of yourself.
- 11:34We might say giving the gift of your
- 11:36true self.
- 11:36So in our last episode, we talked about
- 11:38how we have to face our false self
- 11:40to kind of puncture, let God puncture that
- 11:42false self, deflate the balloon of ego that
- 11:44we project to others and just be honest
- 11:45about our weaknesses.
- 11:47Well, similarly, the real self, the true self
- 11:49that God has given us, that's the gift
- 11:51that we have to give to people around
- 11:53us in the workplace.
- 11:55So, uh, there's something about your work, right?
- 11:59That is meant to be filled up with
- 12:02you.
- 12:03Your work is not just functional, right?
- 12:05It's not just, oh, this task needs to
- 12:07get done any old way.
- 12:09It's how do you, as you, as the
- 12:12specific human being that you are, do this
- 12:14task out of love example of this, uh,
- 12:18my colleague, uh, Christine Fisher, Chris Fisher, she
- 12:21is, uh, the, oh, what's the phrase.
- 12:25It's a specific type of market environmental branding.
- 12:27She's the environmental branding expert at Northern Illinois
- 12:30food bank.
- 12:31So a few years ago, before she got
- 12:33a chance to do this project, I would
- 12:35work in the lobby of our West Suburban
- 12:37Center in Geneva, Illinois, and it was this
- 12:39drab industrial lobby, you know, like concrete walls
- 12:42and a brown desk and, you know, drab
- 12:45paint and it just, you know, it wasn't
- 12:47super welcoming.
- 12:48It was very industrial.
- 12:49Cause you know, it's a distribution center where,
- 12:51where are we processing millions of pounds of
- 12:53food every year?
- 12:53Uh, and Christine Fisher, she's an artist.
- 12:57And so she was given this task to
- 12:58do environmental branding.
- 13:00And what she did is she brought our
- 13:02brand colors of like green and orange and
- 13:05like some images of like fruit and vegetables
- 13:08to kind of reflect that we're a food
- 13:09bank and brought in some pallets and like
- 13:11totally transformed the Now, when you walk in
- 13:13the lobby, it's like you're hit with this
- 13:14wave of color and there's just this sense
- 13:16of welcome and you see the, you see
- 13:19the fruit, you see the vegetables, you see
- 13:20the pallets, like it's still communicating like, Hey,
- 13:22this is a, this is a food bank.
- 13:24This is a distribution center.
- 13:26We're doing, we're doing work here with pallet
- 13:28jacks and, uh, you know, and, and crates
- 13:30and, uh, blue collar stuff.
- 13:32And yet it feels so welcoming.
- 13:34It's so, it's so fun, uh, just to
- 13:36walk into that lobby now.
- 13:37And, and when, uh, the paint job was
- 13:40done and the branding was all in place
- 13:41and it was so lively and vibrant, people
- 13:44just remarked on it whenever they walked in
- 13:46the door, they walk in the door and
- 13:46go, Whoa, this is like totally different than
- 13:49it was before.
- 13:50This is amazing.
- 13:51There's something uniquely human about what Chris was
- 13:54able to bring to that project.
- 13:56There's something about who she is as an
- 13:58artist that she could imagine.
- 14:00What would this space be like to, to
- 14:02be truly welcoming, to still communicate the heart
- 14:04of who we are and the industrial grit
- 14:06that we have for this kind of distribution
- 14:08center, but in a way that engages people
- 14:10and She had this uniquely human capacity to
- 14:13do it.
- 14:13And since I know her personally, I know
- 14:14she did that out of love.
- 14:16She did that out of a desire for
- 14:17people to feel deeply welcome in, in that
- 14:21place.
- 14:22And she succeeded.
- 14:23Okay.
- 14:24This is an image of the gift of
- 14:26the self, right?
- 14:27It's not just functionally, Oh, some AI could
- 14:30have thrown some paint on the walls, whatever.
- 14:32No, it's Chris Fisher as a unique human
- 14:34being was able to give the gift of
- 14:37herself in that work out of love.
- 14:41In a way that bore incredible fruit for
- 14:42our mission.
- 14:44Okay.
- 14:45It's not going to be that visually dramatic
- 14:47for most of us in our everyday roles,
- 14:49but there's still something like that, that you
- 14:52can do in your work.
- 14:54Can you bring your true self, the self
- 14:56that God is making you to be?
- 14:58Can you do your work tasks with love
- 15:00as that true self?
- 15:02And in that way, give the gift of
- 15:04yourself to the people around you.
- 15:06Because if you do, then you're showing them
- 15:09something about who God is, that God is
- 15:12a God of love that wants to give
- 15:14himself to us in that way.
- 15:17Lord Jesus, thank you that you are a
- 15:19God of love, that our bodies mean something,
- 15:23that our work means something.
- 15:24Help us to engage our work as our
- 15:27true selves, as the people you meant us
- 15:29to be.
- 15:29Help us to have the courage to give
- 15:31the gift of ourselves to the work and
- 15:34to those around us.
- 15:35Lord Jesus, do your work in us as
- 15:37we do our work with you.
- 15:39Amen.
