- 0:00Speaker 1: Lesejo Mucuena pressed her gloved palm against the obsidian arch
- 0:04Speaker 1: and felt the stone press back. Not hard, just enough
- 0:08Speaker 1: to let her know it was awake and that it
- 0:10Speaker 1: had been waiting a very long time for someone with
- 0:13Speaker 1: a spiral burned into their skin. You said three hours,
- 0:17Speaker 1: she said, not turning around. The MEP doesn't need three hours.
- 0:22Speaker 1: They've already traced my entry. I can feel them pinging
- 0:25Speaker 1: the habitat from orbit. Tabo stood a few paces behind her.
- 0:29Speaker 1: arms folded, his breath fogging inside his helmet. Then stop
- 0:34Speaker 1: touching the door and start reading it. She turned. The
- 0:38Speaker 1: arch rose from the red dust like a splinter of night,
- 0:41Speaker 1: its surface etched with symbols that shifted when she looked
- 0:44Speaker 1: too long. Thabo looked exactly as he had when she'd
- 0:48Speaker 1: first seen him in this hidden Mars, a former key-turned-lock,
- 0:52Speaker 1: carrying the weight of a choice he'd already made once
- 0:55Speaker 1: and regretted. His jaw was set, but his eyes kept
- 0:59Speaker 1: flicking to the horizon, where the false sky shimmered. Reading
- 1:03Speaker 1: it isn't like reading a sign, Lesejo said. It's like
- 1:07Speaker 1: trying to hold a conversation with someone who's already decided
- 1:10Speaker 1: what you're going to say. Then let it decide! We're
- 1:13Speaker 1: out of time! She turned back. The spiral on her
- 1:17Speaker 1: wrist pulsed, and the symbols resolved, not into words, but
- 1:21Speaker 1: into a kind of pressure, a leaning. Three doors. Earth,
- 1:26Speaker 1: where the MEP had already begun to hunt her, the
- 1:29Speaker 1: MEP homeworld, where no human had ever walked and returned,
- 1:33Speaker 1: and the final seal, which closed from within and never
- 1:37Speaker 1: opened again. The seal is the safe choice, Tabo said quietly,
- 1:42Speaker 1: as if reading her mind. It ends the threat. It
- 1:45Speaker 1: ends you. It ends everything, the Seiko said, including the
- 1:50Speaker 1: people who might need these doors later. She touched the
- 1:54Speaker 1: arch again, and this time the pressure became a voice,
- 1:57Speaker 1: not in her ears, but behind her eyes, layered and old.
- 2:02Speaker 1: It spoke in a language she didn't know, but the
- 2:04Speaker 1: spiral translated, and the translation was a question. Which name
- 2:09Speaker 1: will you carry through? What does it want? Thabo asked.
- 2:13Speaker 1: A name, something to anchor me to the door I choose.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Then give it yours. No, she pulled her hand back.
- 2:21Speaker 1: If I give it my name, I belong to it.
- 2:24Speaker 1: I've seen what that does. She thought of Numusa, translucent
- 2:28Speaker 1: and trapped in a stone circle, her voice stretched thin
- 2:32Speaker 1: across two worlds. I need a name that isn't mine,
- 2:36Speaker 1: something the door can hold that won't hold me. Tabo
- 2:40Speaker 1: was silent for a long moment. Then he reached up
- 2:43Speaker 1: and unclasped the chain around his neck, a small, dull
- 2:46Speaker 1: pendant she'd never seen him take off. This was my sister's.
- 2:50Speaker 1: She died before the doors were built. The door won't
- 2:53Speaker 1: know her. It'll take the name and let you pass.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Lesejo stared at the pendant. You'd give that up? I've
- 3:00Speaker 1: been a lock for longer than I was a man,
- 3:02Speaker 1: he said. I know what it costs to hold a
- 3:05Speaker 1: door shut. Better to spend a name than a life.
- 3:08Speaker 1: She took it. The metal was warm from his skin,
- 3:12Speaker 1: and when she pressed it to the arch, the symbols
- 3:14Speaker 1: flared and the pressure eased. The door opened, not as
- 3:18Speaker 1: a hole in the rock, but as a fold, a
- 3:21Speaker 1: place where the air itself peeled back to show a
- 3:24Speaker 1: darkness so complete it seemed to have texture. Go, Tabo said.
- 3:29Speaker 1: I'll hold the arch from this side as long as
- 3:30Speaker 1: I can. And if the MEP arrives? Then I'll be
- 3:34Speaker 1: a lock again. It's what I'm good at. She stepped
- 3:37Speaker 1: into the dark. For a while there was nothing. No up,
- 3:40Speaker 1: no down, no breath. Then light, sudden and total, and
- 3:45Speaker 1: she was falling through it, blinded, her suit screaming warnings
- 3:49Speaker 1: that faded into silence. When she opened her eyes, she
- 3:53Speaker 1: was lying on grass, actual grass, soft and green and
- 3:57Speaker 1: impossibly alive, and above her a sky the colour of
- 4:01Speaker 1: earth's summer, with two moons hanging like pale coins. She
- 4:06Speaker 1: sat up slowly. Around her, a city rose from the landscape,
- 4:10Speaker 1: not built on the ground, but woven into it. Towers
- 4:14Speaker 1: of living wood and glass spiralled upward, their surfaces crawling
- 4:18Speaker 1: with vines and light. Rivers ran between them, and bridges
- 4:22Speaker 1: of woven roots spanned the water. In the distance, forests
- 4:26Speaker 1: rolled to the horizon, and beyond them, mountains she didn't recognise.
- 4:31Speaker 1: And the people! They were tall and slender, their skin
- 4:35Speaker 1: a deep bronze, their eyes large and dark, and they
- 4:39Speaker 1: wore robes that seemed to shift colour as they moved.
- 4:42Speaker 1: They stood in a loose circle around her, not threatening,
- 4:45Speaker 1: but watching with an intensity that made her feel like
- 4:48Speaker 1: a specimen under glass. One of them stepped forward. You
- 4:52Speaker 1: are the one who carries the spiral, they said, in
- 4:55Speaker 1: a language she understood perfectly. We have waited a long
- 4:58Speaker 1: time for you to come home. Lesejo got to her feet,
- 5:02Speaker 1: her legs unsteady. I'm not from here. No, the stranger agreed,
- 5:06Speaker 1: but the door is, and you are its key.
