- 0:00Speaker 1: How is it that the Super Bowl champions have kind
- 0:03of got lost in the sauce a little bit, But
- 0:05somehow they are and it's time now for football at
- 0:08Ford to bring them back into light. With our man
- 0:11Andrew to Checko from Inside the Birds dot Com and
- 0:14the Inside of the Birds podcast. He has been at
- 0:17Eagles trainingkeet which by the way, it is hot as
- 0:20heck up there to check o and I saw you
- 0:22wearing long sleeves the other day. You're out of your
- 0:24mind up there.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, man, look, iic football weather. I just tough it out.
- 0:29Speaker 3: It is hot one. It is a hot one up there,
- 0:31but they're kind of battling to try.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I'm not going to tell you that wasn't hot. I
- 0:35saw you when the temperatures reached that that kind of
- 0:38boiling point hot is hot.
- 0:40Speaker 3: It just doesn't matter, right.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I try to protect the arms and not get burned.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Well, you've been up there covering a lot of this.
- 0:47I want to get your take. You wrote an article.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's funny you wrote about the linebackers up there. I
- 0:51saw somebody talk about how athletic and deep the linebackers are.
- 0:55We gonna have this conversation on this day last year
- 0:58and talk about how weak the linebacking group is. What
- 1:01are we seeing at linebacker with this crew right now?
- 1:03And this is without even to Kobe Dean.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Yeah, very athletic and a very diverse group of players.
- 1:10You have someone like Johad Campbell who's young, he's athletic,
- 1:14he's rangy. Of course, Zach Bond can do it all.
- 1:17He's an all pro. N Kobe Dean's injured, you take
- 1:20him out of the equation for now, but he's obviously
- 1:22very physical. He's the tone center and the heartbeat of
- 1:24the defense. Smilemond and Junior had an active day today.
- 1:28I think he's done some really good things through the
- 1:30first six practices. And Jeremiah Trotter Junior is a player
- 1:34who I think you could argue is among the top
- 1:37few standouts, consistent standouts over the last you six days
- 1:42of practice, very instinctual play recognition, and I think that
- 1:47those different qualities all meld together and give you a
- 1:51very diverse group of linebackers.
- 1:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that linebacker spot's gonna be fun to see what
- 1:55happens with. Y'all.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Had Campbell the first round pick, You're always interested. Do
- 1:58you anticipate that he will play in preseason games.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Yes, I do, well, because you have to. You have
- 2:06to get him some reps before you sort of drop
- 2:08them in the deep end and say, Okay, it's the
- 2:10regular season. Now, we're not saying that's gonna be a
- 2:13you know, out there for forty five fifty reps, but
- 2:16you would like to see your first round pick get
- 2:18out there, hit a couple guys, put some things on
- 2:21tape that can be corrected, or maybe some things you
- 2:24can build off of and then carry over into the
- 2:26regular season.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Well, I asked that because the Eagles generally don't like
- 2:29to play their players in preseason, But Andrew, do we
- 2:31anticipate that they're gonna have to this time around because
- 2:34of all the battles that they have.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Well, yeah, that's just the nature of it. That's safety
- 2:39and corner. There's gonna be obviously not reblanket ship, but
- 2:42Sidney Brown's gonna have to play Drew mccouba, who is
- 2:45nursing a shoulder injury right now, Kiehi Ringooner, Dori Jackson.
- 2:49But you know, I mean guys like Quinnon, Mitchell, Cooper,
- 2:52Dejen they don't need to be out there, but there
- 2:54are certain positions where you're gonna you need to see
- 2:57what they can do in a live game situation and
- 3:00put those things on tape that can be evaluated by
- 3:03VIC Vangio and their position coaches and really assess where
- 3:07they're at. Because you factor in multiple things when you're
- 3:10going through the evaluation process. It's not only what you
- 3:14do on the practice field and enjoint practices, which I
- 3:17think are the most valuable aspect of the summer training
- 3:20camp portion, but also in the preseason games as well.
- 3:23Speaker 1: All right, Andrew, check out football for real quick before
- 3:26we get to our division preview today, which a go
- 3:28one NFC West. Obviously, all these teams battling now for
- 3:32the NFC Championship. Who is right now ahead at corner
- 3:36on the outside for you? Is it Dori Jackson, Kaylee
- 3:40Ringo or somebody else catching your eye?
- 3:44Speaker 2: I mean it's still really early. It's always six practices in.
- 3:47If I had to personally give a nod to somebody
- 3:49right now or the slight edge, it would probably be
- 3:52Kilee Ringo. Kiley's the draft pick, third season athletics. He
- 3:57had a couple of nice pass breakups today. Of course,
- 4:00the players have been trading off first team reps, opening
- 4:03practice with the first team, and then rotating throughout the day.
- 4:06So it's really even right now and no one has
- 4:09quite yet emerged. But if I had to guess moving forward,
- 4:12and I've been consistent with this, it would be Kiely Bringo.
- 4:14Speaker 3: All right, ringo there.
- 4:15Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on that they played next week
- 4:17and you can listen to the game next Thursday night
- 4:19right here on ninety seven to three ESPN. All right,
- 4:21let's get into today's division preview, which is.
- 4:23Speaker 3: The NFC West. This is a good one, this is
- 4:25a fun one.
- 4:26Speaker 1: Start with the Rams, who the Eagles saw in the
- 4:28NFC playoffs last year and many people thought gave them
- 4:31their best game in the run. Obviously it came down
- 4:34to a Jalen Carter sack or pressure, I should say,
- 4:37late in that game. You look at the Rams offense
- 4:39this year as a better offense than the one the
- 4:42Eagle saw in the playoffs last year.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean DeVante Adams Pukinakua, I do like two
- 4:50to two at well, he's kind of shifty. Of course.
- 4:52They signed Britain Covey in free agency, who will likely
- 4:54return punts for them. Their offensive line is pretty solid.
- 4:58I've always been a big Matthew Staffer guy, So I
- 5:01do believe that they have enough pieces there offensively, and
- 5:05you couple that with a very young defense that they've
- 5:07been sort of gradually stockpiling these these young talents. I
- 5:12believe that they they are going to be a team
- 5:14that could make.
- 5:14Speaker 3: Some noise and crazy.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You know, they lost Aaron Donald and they went back
- 5:18to the playoffs, and this is a team that was getting,
- 5:20you know, kind of criticized for all the trades that
- 5:22they had made. They had no draft picks, and yet
- 5:24they have this really young defense. And we saw that
- 5:26young defense last year with Fisk and obviously Byer Young
- 5:30and they've got Jared First.
- 5:31Speaker 3: I mean, this is a very good young turner in.
- 5:33Speaker 2: The middle middle of their defensive lines. A nice player too.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And so is their defense better than the defense we
- 5:40saw at Lincoln Financial Field last year?
- 5:43Speaker 2: Yeah, because a lot of these guys are now a
- 5:45year into the system and they're going to continue to
- 5:47build off of what like if you look at Braydon Fisk,
- 5:50you look at someone like Jared Verse, They're they're building
- 5:55off of their first seasons, which I thought they flashed
- 5:58quite a bit, and and you kind of look at
- 6:02some of the other pieces that they have. Cam Curl
- 6:04was a free free agent addition at safety. Omar Spakes
- 6:08was an undrafted linebacker. They have just an amalgam of talent,
- 6:12some veterans, some experienced players, and a lot of young
- 6:15players that I think make them a very formidable unit
- 6:19really from offense end defense. I think they're largely a
- 6:22complete team.
- 6:23Speaker 1: All right, the Rams last year, obviously the Eagles saw
- 6:27them in the NFC Division all round. You go to
- 6:30the other teams in the West here, San Francisco a
- 6:33little bit of a disappointment last year. You look at
- 6:35that as a disappointment because of the injuries, orsus a
- 6:38team that's on the decline, or do you think there's
- 6:40a team that's ready to bounce back with an offense
- 6:43that is going to be different this year? Noboard Deebo
- 6:45Samuel as part of this offense. And you know, obviously
- 6:47Ayuk with the injuries and Juwan Jennings. So where is
- 6:51this forty nine ers offense?
- 6:53Speaker 2: Looyd banged up last season, So I'm not necessarily sure
- 6:56that that's an accurate gauge of where they are, But yeah,
- 7:00I mean, look, it's an offense that has Brandon Aiyuk,
- 7:02Ricky Piersaw, who I really like coming out of Florida
- 7:05in twenty four, Juwan Jennings had a really big Super
- 7:08Bowl a couple of seasons ago, and I like their
- 7:11offensive line. Brock Perty's obviously going to be someone that's
- 7:15that's always highly scrutinized because he doesn't necessarily why you
- 7:18with with a vast array with a vast skill set.
- 7:23But when you have Christian McCaffrey at running back to
- 7:26kind of accent that whole group there, I mean, that
- 7:28is an offense with Kyle Shanahan of course that they
- 7:32should be able to keep things turning along.
- 7:35Speaker 3: All right.
- 7:35Speaker 1: This is a team that had really really good defense
- 7:37over the years, but they've lost a lot of those pieces,
- 7:39has a lot of different players. Nick Bosa is still
- 7:41there though, Bred Warner is still there though. Is this
- 7:44a defense that could help this team get back to
- 7:47where they were?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Yeah? I believe so, Nick Bosa. Michael Williams, who they
- 7:53drafted in the first round out of Georgia is another
- 7:55player that I think is really going to give this
- 7:57unit of boost. Fred Warner you can put him right
- 8:00up there with with Zach Bond. I know, Ropwon Smith.
- 8:03Those players are viewed as the best at their position,
- 8:06and I don't know if they quite have it up
- 8:08there in the secondary that that's a question that I
- 8:10have personally. But the Diamador Lenore is he's been solid.
- 8:17He's an okay player. And Ernardo Green, one of their
- 8:20corners did they draft from the second round last year,
- 8:23is a nice talent. But other than that, I mean
- 8:26they had they have some other pieces like Jai Brown
- 8:28and Malik Mustafa from Wake Forest too, I liked a
- 8:31little bit too, But I don't know if they have
- 8:33that that standout performer that you can look at as
- 8:38a as a shutdown player or an enforcer that that
- 8:41really is going to strike a whole lot of fear.
- 8:42Speaker 1: All right, go over to Seattle where Sam Donald is
- 8:45the new running back. There no more DK Metcalfe, but
- 8:48Jackson Smith and Jigbo was a big draft pick a
- 8:51couple of years ago. Cooper Cup is there now, so
- 8:55a lot different look for the Seahawks.
- 8:58Speaker 2: They have a really bad I wants passing attack because
- 9:01Smith and Jigba can really affect all three levels. Cooper
- 9:05Cupp of course, is a route running wizard and as
- 9:08savvy veteran and Valvez Scantling is such a polarizing player
- 9:12considering that he's bounced around on a number of different teams.
- 9:15You've seen the speed manifest on different occasions in consistent hands,
- 9:19of course. But yeah, they have a decent receiving corps
- 9:23Kenneth Walker the third and Zach Sharbonay. The kind of
- 9:27one to two punch that they have there in the
- 9:28backfield should take a little bit of pressure off of
- 9:30Sam Darnold. And so yeah, at Gray's Abel, I can't
- 9:34forget they drafted Gray's Abel in the first round as well,
- 9:37so that they have some pieces there to make it work.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Defensively, Leonard Williams is over there now, DeMarcus Lawrence. They
- 9:44got some good players up front there. You've also got
- 9:46Buyer Murphy, You've got wooland our old buddy Josh Job's
- 9:50out there, Julian Love some interesting pieces on this defense.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and by the way, you know, we have had
- 9:57a conversation about Josh Job a couple of years ago.
- 10:00I was bullish on him, and it looks like he
- 10:03found a solid spot, the solid landing spot and has
- 10:06a pivotal role there on their defense right now. But yeah,
- 10:09in addition to that, Riek Wolan, Kobe Bryant, Devin Witherspoon,
- 10:15they have a Uchenna Nwoso, Ernest Jones. I like Ernest Jones.
- 10:19He's bounced around a little bit, Mike, but he's he's
- 10:22their middle linebacker. Tyres Knight's a player who I interviewed
- 10:25at the NFL Scott and Combine a couple of years
- 10:27ago out of UTEP. He's an undersized linebacker that runs
- 10:31pretty well. I like some of the pieces that they
- 10:33have there.
- 10:34Speaker 3: All right's go over to Arizona. Jonathan Gannon's crew.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I mean, Kyler Murray was the first pick of the
- 10:39draft a couple of years ago. Now it's either put
- 10:41up or shut up time for this offense. They driftedt
- 10:43Marmon Harrison in the first round last year. Trey McBride
- 10:47just got a big contract there. Uh, the Arizona Cardinals
- 10:50offensively ready to take that jump.
- 10:54Speaker 2: I don't know if they're quite ready, And I think
- 10:56a lot of it has to do with my reluctance in,
- 10:59you know, popping up the quarterback. Kyler Murray. Kyler Murray
- 11:03is an exciting player, but I don't know if he's
- 11:05the caliber quarterback that can elevate an offense, even with
- 11:09Marvin Harrison as your top receiver, even with Michael Wilson,
- 11:12who Yeah, I mean I had a little bit more
- 11:14higher expectations of him when he was coming out of college.
- 11:17Greg Dortsch is on their receiving corps as well. He's
- 11:20more of a of a journeyman at this point. Very
- 11:23undersized slot receiver Quas Watkins is there. Yeah, I'm not
- 11:28too optimistic about the offense, but I do really like
- 11:30Trey McBride. They're tight end. I think that he's not
- 11:33talked about enough. He's recognized in NFL circles, but I
- 11:37don't think in general he gets enough love. Because he
- 11:40really is one of the best players at his position,
- 11:42which in theory should make life easier for Kyler Murray.
- 11:46I just don't know if he's consistent enough as a
- 11:48passer to really sustain that.
- 11:49Speaker 3: All right, let's look at their defense.
- 11:51Speaker 1: John Gannon brings back Josh Sweat, he gets Walter Nolan,
- 11:54He's got obviously, Buddha Baker's still at safety there, Baron Browning,
- 11:59They've got some on this defense to make them interesting.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Dalvin Tomlinson, Darius Robinson, who they draft in the
- 12:07first round out of Southern Mississippi, if I'm remembering that correctly,
- 12:12talked to him at the combine A team. Davis Gaither
- 12:15comes over from the Cincinnati Bengals. I talked a lot
- 12:18about him when I was covering him leading up to
- 12:20the draft. Will Johnson drafted him in the second round.
- 12:24That was the cornerback out of Michigan. That was somebody
- 12:27that slipped it. I did not expect. You talked about
- 12:29Josh wet You talked about Walter Nolan. He was injured.
- 12:34I don't know if he still is at the moment,
- 12:35but that's a player who can help the middle of
- 12:37that defensive line. And Max Melton from Rutgers. I've talked
- 12:41a lot about him reading up the last draft. I
- 12:43interviewed him at his pro day and he's gotten off
- 12:46to a fast start to his career.
- 12:48Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Last year a very competitive Division two teams with ten wins,
- 12:52one with eight. The Niners came in last with six.
- 12:56Last year the Rams win at ten and seven. Seattle
- 12:59won ten games, didn't make the playoffs. How's the West
- 13:03go this year.
- 13:05Speaker 2: I think I'll do Rams Niners, Seahawks, Cardinals.
- 13:09Speaker 3: All right, Cardinals down the bottom there.
- 13:11Speaker 1: That that division is really interesting, should be fun to
- 13:14watch a lot of people like that, rams T. I
- 13:16kind of agree with you too, Rams, he goes, Rams Niners, Seahawks, Cardinals.
- 13:21Speaker 3: That is our look at the NSC West.
- 13:24Speaker 1: We'll do the South next week, then the North and
- 13:26then the East, and then we have the start of
- 13:29the football season right here on ninety seven three ESPN.
- 13:31That's today's Football at four with Andrew de Checko. Thanks man,
- 13:35all right, Mike
