- 0:49Hi. Hi, beautiful people. If
- 0:52anybody's watching me on the replay, thank you so much for watching me. I appreciate
- 0:55you. My name is Celeste. I'm a therapist from Boston. And
- 1:01I come on Wednesdays. I am a little late now, but I
- 1:04come on Wednesdays to talk about a
- 1:08subject and then kind of think about solutions and ways that
- 1:11we can work through it. I'm just trying to
- 1:14make sure I'm live on Instagram, and
- 1:18then we'll get started. Today we're talking about embracing
- 1:22stillness, embracing stillness and
- 1:25the importance of it And okay, I'm
- 1:29live on Instagram. We're talking about bracing stillness. I'm live on
- 1:32TikTok, Facebook and
- 1:36YouTube and Instagram. I'm
- 1:40live everywhere. There's a platform I use if anybody's interested
- 1:43called StreamYard where you can go live everywhere, but you can't
- 1:47do it on TikTok. So I have to do it separately on TikTok. So
- 1:50today we're talking about, this is the setup that
- 1:53we're gonna do today. So mastering the art of embracing
- 1:57stillness, a guide for inner peace. So
- 2:00first, just really understanding the concept of stillness, the
- 2:04benefits of embracing stillness for inner peace, techniques
- 2:08for incorporating stillness into your daily routine and
- 2:12overcoming obstacles to find stillness. practicing
- 2:16mindfulness and meditation for deeper stillness, using stillness
- 2:20as a tool for self-reflection and personal growth, and cultivating a
- 2:24peaceful mindset through the art of stillness. These
- 2:28are things that I feel that
- 2:32hinder people from having peace and stillness. Hey, Derek. Not
- 2:37being able to cultivate stillness in your life will
- 2:42create a lot of internal trauma. So I'm
- 2:45a very visual learner. TikTok, sorry you can't see this. But one
- 2:49of the things I think I want to answer first for people that might
- 2:52not understanding what's the point, right? But
- 2:56why should I embrace stillness? Stillness can lead to better
- 2:59mental and physical health, including improved sleep,
- 3:03creativity, and the ability to let go of negative
- 3:07thoughts. One of the things or
- 3:10one of the reasons why people struggle with
- 3:14stillness is because it's not really incorporated in society. Everything
- 3:18is like fast paced, like go, go, go. A lot
- 3:21of times when people were still, life felt really hard for
- 3:24them. Things felt really challenging. So people
- 3:28have learned how to cope with always doing something. Always
- 3:32being on our phone, always checking our email, always going to
- 3:35work, always helping somebody. A lot of times it's not that people
- 3:39are intentionally avoiding stillness. I know that sometimes people do
- 3:43intentionally avoid it. So it's not about people intentionally avoid
- 3:47it. I just think people don't realize that they are
- 3:50living their lives on the go, go, go all the time. And
- 3:54the thing about not being able to embrace stillness
- 3:58is that you will never understand what's happening in your
- 4:02head. You don't understand the thoughts. We are not our thoughts. We
- 4:05can't help sometimes the thoughts that are coming in our mind. We
- 4:09can only work on identifying them and challenging them.
- 4:14Hey, Frat Head. Hey. dealing with
- 4:18them and challenging them, right? That is the biggest thing that you need
- 4:22to really think about is that the thoughts are going to come. And I
- 4:25tell people, do you want to engage in them? And so you can
- 4:28debunk them. Or if you choose not to engage in them, what's
- 4:32going to happen is that unfortunately, you're going to start to
- 4:35believe the thoughts. And a lot of times those thoughts are lies
- 4:39or propaganda or what society has said. So it's
- 4:43so important to think about, how can I work on embracing
- 4:47stillness so I can understand what's going on? Because if
- 4:50I ask people if they want peace, a lot of times people will say, yeah, I
- 4:53want peace. Oh, I want to get on my mic. People will say, yes, I
- 4:56want to have peace. But the things that you need to do to create
- 5:00peace does require a level of uncomfortability.
- 5:05So I really want to help people understand how to work
- 5:08through that. Some of the common struggles that
- 5:12come with people trying to work on embracing stillness. Let
- 5:15me just get on my mic really quick. so that
- 5:19when it's on the podcast, people can hear. So
- 5:24some of the common reasons why people struggle with
- 5:28pausing, because one time that we all paused
- 5:31as a collective was during the pandemic, if people remember. During the
- 5:35pandemic, we were all forced to pause. And for a lot of people, it
- 5:39was very uncomfortable. I think that was the first time some people realized that
- 5:42they struggled with embracing stillness. So
- 5:47when you embrace stillness, if you've always been on the go, go, go,
- 5:51your system is a little bit confused, right? Your
- 5:55system will start to like struggle because it
- 5:58may have always been in survival mode where it's like, we gotta
- 6:01do this, we gotta do that. Or you're always worrying about something or
- 6:05trying to figure out what's next. So your system will
- 6:09be a little bit confused. And it'd be hard, like
- 6:12it feels scary to be still. Like for some people, like
- 6:15just being in silence or being alone is
- 6:19hard where you always want to be doing something or with someone else. So
- 6:23that's one of the things that's important because it's not, you know,
- 6:26you can understand it's important to embrace stillness, logically, literally,
- 6:30like stillness is important. But then when you try
- 6:33to do it, you may struggle with the fact that it's challenging to
- 6:36do. So what are some practical tips
- 6:41that you can use to incorporate stillness, right?
- 6:45How can I embrace stillness? Because I want
- 6:50people to take the information that I give and
- 6:55to take what you can. But I think sometimes when people are
- 6:59learning things that they should do to help themselves. They
- 7:02try to do it really quick or
- 7:06try to overdo it. And your system goes into a shock. So
- 7:09I really want people to think about small increments on how they can work on
- 7:13developing a mindset of stillness. So the
- 7:16first thing If you're
- 7:20listening to this on audio podcast, there's a visual. Take
- 7:23slow breaths. Deep breaths can slow your heart rate and induce a
- 7:27parasympathetic system. So if you can just work
- 7:30on taking time, there's this breathing circle that I love
- 7:34using with people. It's a two minute breathing circle. Just
- 7:37taking time to take deep breaths. That's a
- 7:41good one. Schedule stillness. So set aside time
- 7:45for stillness. I promise you, your system
- 7:49is not going to remind you, hey, Celeste, remember you
- 7:52heard Celeste, the therapist podcast, and she talked about stillness. You
- 7:56think that we should think about creating that right
- 7:59now? You're not going to get no alert in your head or your
- 8:03mind until it becomes a reality where you're doing it
- 8:06all the time. So you have to be really intentional on
- 8:11embracing stillness with being intentional
- 8:15about it. You can find a favorite spot where
- 8:18it's like where that that's the place that I'm gonna work on like being still listening
- 8:22to soft music can be calming. and help you
- 8:26with working on slowing down your mind. Repeating
- 8:29some calming phases, right? So if
- 8:33you're working on trying to calm the noise in your
- 8:36head or working on embracing stillness, saying
- 8:41things like, today's going to be a good day, like I
- 8:45am at peace. Even if you don't feel like you're at peace, all
- 8:48you're doing is mentally preparing your mind to get ready, right? You're putting your
- 8:51mind in an environment to help it understand I am at
- 8:54peace. And when I think about that too, when
- 8:59it's time for sleep, and this is why it's important to
- 9:02work on creating a stillness practice where you're able to work on
- 9:06being more mindful. When you're getting ready to go to sleep, a
- 9:10lot of times people may have had a lot going on
- 9:14in the day. Maybe you're on your phone, you're working late,
- 9:17and then you just move into bed and you find yourself struggling with sleep. The
- 9:21reason why that happens is because your mind is still going. Your mind needs to reset.
- 9:25You got to be like, okay, now we're about to unwind, get ready
- 9:28for bed, so maybe I'll put my phone away 30 minutes earlier. turn
- 9:32off the TV, like read a book, something that's calming.
- 9:36The lights, all those lights and stuff, they're not good for you before you
- 9:39go to sleep. If you're struggling with sleeping, you're trying to think
- 9:43about a holistic way of calming
- 9:46the noise in your mind. definitely like get the screens
- 9:50away and make sure that you are
- 9:53like having some calming phases, even like some
- 9:57essential oils are good to help you with that process. I
- 10:00know sleep is a huge thing for people, struggling
- 10:04with trying to get some sleep. And when your sleep is disrupted, it's
- 10:07like the worst thing ever because your gut
- 10:11health is messed up, the next day is messed up, you're irritable, you're aggravated.
- 10:15Your mental status literally will change when
- 10:19you're not sleeping properly. So really thinking
- 10:23about creating some calming practices
- 10:28before sleep will be great. Practicing gratitude is
- 10:31another way to create stillness. Make a habit of
- 10:35listing things that you are grateful for. This can help you shift your focus on
- 10:38what's abundant and right in your life. It's
- 10:43hard to think about all of these crazy things and
- 10:46have gratitude at the same time. Gratitude's a
- 10:50great way for you to make space to just pause and
- 10:54think about what went well today. I talked to
- 10:58people that are in relationships that are having a
- 11:02hard time about making space to talk
- 11:06to each other about the good things that are happening in the relationship. because
- 11:10what happens is we only start to look at all of the hard
- 11:13things that we're going through. And so then your mind only starts to
- 11:16focus on that. So if you want to work on
- 11:20creating some stillness in your life, taking
- 11:23time to mention the
- 11:27gratitude, the things that you're grateful for today, right?
- 11:30Because when you're talking about what am I grateful for today, it literally
- 11:34puts your mind in the moment, right? So if you're always
- 11:38dwelling on the past or worried about the future, the
- 11:41middle part is the moment. You're missing out on the moment. It's
- 11:44hard to have peace when you're worried about the future. It's hard
- 11:47to have peace when you're dwelling on the past. That's why
- 11:51trying to get into the moment is such a powerful thing
- 11:55because when you're in the moment, your mind is
- 11:58not all over the place looking at other things. And
- 12:03then connecting with nature, spending time in nature can help you slow down.
- 12:07Something I would have never thought, but it's true. I love being in nature. I
- 12:11know everyone's not a nature person. I may not have nature around them, but
- 12:14even Just going for a walk into the sun and just
- 12:20moving your body can help you. If you move your
- 12:23body, look at the ground, put some soft
- 12:27music in your ear, that's something that can really help you
- 12:30think about embracing stillness. So
- 12:35overcoming the obstacles to finding stillness, right? Because
- 12:38it's one thing to know what to do, but then how to do it. So
- 12:42I really wanna encourage people to really be intentional about
- 12:46this process. One of the ways to
- 12:49actually embrace it even fully is
- 12:52having a practice of mindfulness and meditation. Anytime
- 12:57I talk about mindfulness and meditation, I
- 13:00feel like people will say, I can't meditate because
- 13:04there's always noise happening in my head. And I say, yeah,
- 13:09that's literally the point. The noise is happening in your head. And
- 13:13the whole point in being able to work on creating
- 13:17a meditation practice, it's for you to work on starting
- 13:21to be like the author of it, like to make sure you're paying attention to
- 13:24what's going on. So if you've ever tried
- 13:28it and you feel like you did it wrong because you're hearing things, no, you're
- 13:32doing it right, I promise you. So for people that are
- 13:36watching or on the audio, I'm gonna
- 13:39read what I have up. These are some tips for beginners who
- 13:43wanna start meditating. So start small,
- 13:48begin by focusing on your breath for a few minutes, then gradually increasing
- 13:52the time and complexity of your practice. A
- 13:57few years ago, I started this with my kids, and I literally started
- 14:00with two minutes. I would go on YouTube and find
- 14:04a two-minute meditation, And we
- 14:07would sit and they would complain. And now the
- 14:11highest we've gone is 10 minutes, like a little routine before bed.
- 14:14Because my goal is to help get them into a practice. As
- 14:18they get older, you got to deal with life, right? A lot of
- 14:22times when we're struggling with something, a
- 14:25lot of turmoil, don't get me wrong, some hard things happen in
- 14:28life. But I think a lot of turmoil we face is
- 14:32internal. It's not external. It's a
- 14:35lot of things in the way we're framing it, the way we're thinking about it.
- 14:39And in order for you to work on like shifting your thought process and
- 14:43creating new thoughts, right, and creating new habits, You
- 14:47got to make sure that you're being in tune
- 14:50with what's happening. It's really hard not to. And
- 14:54so really creating a practice to be still and
- 14:58see what's going on. And the good thing, another great thing about being able
- 15:02to understand yourself and be still is that you know
- 15:05when your body's struggling, right? I
- 15:10was, um, you know, I was sick for like a month and
- 15:13a half and I realized something was wrong, but, um, I
- 15:16was listening to my body, even though the doctors told me like, they don't know,
- 15:19everything seems fine. You know, I, I found out my vitamin
- 15:23D was really low and creating a lot of turmoil in my
- 15:26body. And I feel like if I wasn't in tune
- 15:29with my body, I just would have chalked it up to, oh, and it
- 15:33was dark, the winter was here, maybe I'm depressed, or
- 15:36maybe I'm sick. If I didn't know my body, because
- 15:40I wasn't really eating, I was tired all the time. So
- 15:44if I didn't know my body, if I wasn't in tune with it, I
- 15:48would have just listened to the doctors as my vitamin D is depleting. It
- 15:52wouldn't have made any sense. Another
- 15:55reason why stillness is important when it comes to understanding yourself
- 16:00is that you can actually start to listen to your intuition. A lot
- 16:03of times, in hindsight, people are like, you know what? I probably shouldn't have done
- 16:07that. Or something was telling me, but that voice,
- 16:10that intuition, that inner voice in you is not strong enough because there's
- 16:14so many things happening outside of you that you're allowing to
- 16:18lead the way. And that's just not OK when you're allowing
- 16:22all of these things that are telling you who you are when it's
- 16:25not true, when you're not in tune with your body or your mind
- 16:29and your spirit, when you're watching things on social media,
- 16:33when you're watching shows, all of these things, you really start
- 16:36to find yourself being discontent with your life, not
- 16:39realizing that these people are just trying to sell you something. So
- 16:43really thinking about the benefits of being still even
- 16:47though it's hard, but I want you to think about starting small, like
- 16:51starting your practice small. Practice it when
- 16:54it's convenient. Mornings are the best. So
- 16:59when it's convenient, it's great. One of the ways I tell people to try
- 17:02to implement this practice is in a shower. You
- 17:06could do a shower meditation, especially if you've never done it before.
- 17:10You can actually start your day, and the
- 17:15ward is hitting you. You're in one space.
- 17:19You can smell the soap, you can feel the soap and
- 17:23really start to think about what you have to do for the day if it's in the morning
- 17:27or thinking about what you have later that day or
- 17:30what happened during the day if it's at night. I don't think people
- 17:34understand how powerful it is to actually like
- 17:37pay attention to what's happened throughout the day. Sometimes people
- 17:41just want to forget you've gotten used to just glossing over
- 17:44life, glossing over trauma, glossing over the hard things.
- 17:48And the hard thing about glossing over
- 17:52the hard things is that your mind starts to believe that that's how
- 17:55life is. So you never find yourself seeing
- 17:58the opportunities or the beauty in life. I know you've heard
- 18:02stories of people, you'd be like, damn, they went through that or they went through this. How
- 18:05are they here? They had to work through it. They had to be still. They
- 18:08had to face the things that they didn't want to think about so
- 18:13that it didn't control them. The problem with not
- 18:17embracing the things that you may have dealt with, if
- 18:21you're not doing that, the issue with not doing that is that that
- 18:24is controlling the lens of your life. Your mind only
- 18:28knows hardship, right? It doesn't know triumph,
- 18:33right? Your mind is not looking for it because you're only
- 18:37keeping that space in your head. Making it a habit
- 18:40is important, right? So if you wanted to start like
- 18:43a shower meditation routine, trying to do it every time you
- 18:47take a shower. If you wanted to do it before bed, where
- 18:50you set your timer, start doing it before bed. Be
- 18:54comfortable and be prepared to sit still for a few minutes. If
- 18:58you've never tried meditation, I
- 19:02would suggest two minutes, literally just start with two minutes. You
- 19:05do that for a couple of weeks, then you go to three minutes. Little
- 19:08by little, it becomes so normal that you can, some
- 19:12people practice for 20 minutes, 30 minutes, an hour. I'm not
- 19:15saying you have to do it that way, but it's a great start
- 19:18to start with two minutes. take your practice with you.
- 19:22So meditate wherever you find quiet moments, right? So
- 19:25right before I went into private practice, I've
- 19:29always had coworkers and worked with people. I didn't realize like
- 19:32I had an issue with being still until I was forced into stillness,
- 19:36being in my practice and not having coworkers. And
- 19:40so once I realized that, I
- 19:43started to embrace the power of stillness.
- 19:47Like I started to read more, listen to things more,
- 19:51and I find that I'm able to listen to myself better. And
- 19:54so now being still, my thoughts are really clear.
- 19:58Like if I see somebody with the Five Guys shirt
- 20:01on, or a commercial about burgers, all
- 20:05of a sudden I'm craving burgers. I immediately know
- 20:08it in the moment that I was influenced
- 20:13by that commercial or that sign. That's something
- 20:16small, right? But unfortunately, a lot
- 20:19of people don't realize that some of the things that they're watching,
- 20:23listening to, the people in their lives, unfortunately, it's
- 20:27creating an influence on who you are as a person or what
- 20:31life you're going to live. So really be mindful of that. Be
- 20:35kind to yourself. Don't fight the feeling. And remember, it's a process. I
- 20:38always like to say that If you're not kind
- 20:42with yourself about this process, because sometimes people will beat themselves
- 20:46up and say, why can't I just do that? I don't understand. And
- 20:51it's not just going to happen by accident. It's going to happen with intention. So
- 20:56really be mindful of that. And if you start this process
- 20:59today, let's say you're listening to this or watching this,
- 21:03and you're like, you know what? I do want to start being still, because
- 21:06I say I want peace, but what am I doing to create peace?
- 21:11And so I have to be intentional about the process. So I'm
- 21:14going to put it in my calendar, right? Or I'm going to like the
- 21:17same calendar, you may make appointments for people, make
- 21:20that appointment for yourself, right? I'm going to set an alarm. that
- 21:24goes off right before bed so that I can make sure that
- 21:28I'm making space to be still, even if it's for two
- 21:31minutes. And really big yourself up. Make it a big deal
- 21:35when you do it. I think that if we
- 21:38can't do 10 minutes or 20 minutes, it was like, oh, it was just two minutes. You
- 21:42know, when I hear people say that, like, oh, they went from not working
- 21:45out and then they did it once. And it was like, oh, I only did it once. I said, yeah, but you
- 21:48went from zero to one. Like, that's a huge deal. And so
- 21:52if we're mindful on how we're building ourselves up
- 21:55when we're starting new things, today we just happened to be talking about stillness.
- 21:59But in general, If you are mindful of
- 22:03what you're doing and the steps you're making, and you're making
- 22:07it a big deal, you'll actually begin to build confidence in yourself,
- 22:11believe it or not. You need that inner dialogue to be positive.
- 22:15You need that inner dialogue to be motivating. If your language
- 22:19is like, oh, I only did this, or it was just this, or I only took one
- 22:22class, but I still got 10 to go. No, I took
- 22:26one class. I did amazing at it. I got 10 to go,
- 22:29but it's a big deal that I did that one class. Really
- 22:33be mindful on how you are speaking to yourself, because I
- 22:36promise you, you're listening, your mind's going to go. at
- 22:40the direction you take it. So let it be in a direction that is
- 22:44positive to your spirit. So important. So I
- 22:47hope this was helpful. If anything I ever say resonates for
- 22:51you, I always tell people, really be intentional on
- 22:54creating change. You have way more power than you realize. If
- 22:58you ever find yourself always blaming people or blaming
- 23:02other people, for where you are in your circumstances. I
- 23:06promise you, yes, that could be true, but
- 23:10taking accountability over your life where you have the
- 23:13power and you see your power, it just looks different. Maybe that
- 23:16means these circumstances that I'm in, I change that power. I
- 23:20allow people to treat me. Really
- 23:23be mindful of your power. Sometimes, even as an adult, we
- 23:27forget our power because we will transcend into that
- 23:30younger child state where we really didn't have power. But
- 23:33as an adult, really be mindful of the power you
- 23:37have in your situations. Because if you don't, you'll
- 23:41always feel hopeless. You'll always feel like things are never going to
