- 0:14Speaker 1: Exodus 2.5 Heavenly Father, when the enemy tries to attack
- 0:20Speaker 1: my life, my family, my business, and my purpose, I
- 0:24Speaker 1: will praise you. Because like the baby Moses in Exodus 1-2.10,
- 0:29Speaker 1: You've prepared me a basket of redemption. You have prepared
- 0:34Speaker 1: a way for me when there seems to be no
- 0:36Speaker 1: way out. I praise you for your divine protection as
- 0:41Speaker 1: I move and float down the Nile River called life.
- 0:46Speaker 1: And as I move, I thank you that the current
- 0:50Speaker 1: of your favor is leading me to a place only
- 0:53Speaker 1: you can grant me access to. Thank you, Jesus, that
- 0:58Speaker 1: When I arrive at the destination of my destiny, you
- 1:02Speaker 1: have already chosen the right people to help guide and
- 1:05Speaker 1: grow me. I declare that, like Moses, living in two worlds,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I too am multifaceted. I declare that I have been
- 1:16Speaker 1: called to break the status quo. I declare I can
- 1:19Speaker 1: walk in any room and know that because your anointing
- 1:23Speaker 1: is on my life, I belong at the table of success.
- 1:28Speaker 1: My steps have been ordered by the Lord, and I

- 2:01Speaker 2: Baby from the Nile. In our last story, we finished
- 2:06Speaker 2: the stories inspired by the book of Genesis and Joseph's
- 2:10Speaker 2: tragedy that God turned into victory. His brothers had sold
- 2:14Speaker 2: him into slavery to Egypt. However, he became a great
- 2:17Speaker 2: and mighty governor and was able to save his family
- 2:21Speaker 2: from famine. Now we will begin stories inspired by the
- 2:25Speaker 2: book of Exodus. In this story, we will learn how
- 2:28Speaker 2: the Israelites were prospering in Egypt. But a new pharaoh
- 2:32Speaker 2: felt threatened by them, forced them into slavery, and commanded
- 2:36Speaker 2: that their baby boys be killed.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. In our previous episode, we
- 2:46Speaker 3: concluded the book of Genesis. And as we closed out
- 2:49Speaker 3: the story of Joseph, he was revered by both Egyptians
- 2:53Speaker 3: and Hebrews as a great man of God and a deliverer,
- 2:57Speaker 3: a rescuer of the people. Today we begin the book
- 3:01Speaker 3: of Exodus and find a very different reality for the
- 3:04Speaker 3: descendants of Jacob. Years have passed and the new Pharaoh
- 3:08Speaker 3: does not see the prosperous Hebrew people as a reminder
- 3:12Speaker 3: of how God rescued Egypt, but rather as a threat
- 3:16Speaker 3: to his kingdom. The Hebrew people find themselves now enslaved
- 3:20Speaker 3: and forced to endure hard labor and eventually watch powerlessly
- 3:24Speaker 3: as Pharaoh murders scores and scores of their infant sons.
- 3:29Speaker 3: in the midst of unbelievable wickedness and sorrow, we will
- 3:32Speaker 3: still see God's faithfulness. And that faithfulness will be shown
- 3:37Speaker 3: through a baby boy who is delivered to one day
- 3:40Speaker 3: lead the people to freedom. Let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:48Speaker 2: The family of Jacob was delivered from the famine and
- 3:51Speaker 2: brought to Egypt. There, under Joseph's guidance and God's provisions,
- 3:56Speaker 2: Seventy people grew into thousands. Scattered throughout all Egypt, Hebrews
- 4:02Speaker 2: thrived and multiplied. Joseph and the twelve brothers of Israel
- 4:06Speaker 2: had long passed, but their descendants had grown into a strong, independent,
- 4:11Speaker 2: and healthy nation, just as God promised they would. A
- 4:16Speaker 2: new pharaoh had emerged, and the memory of Joseph's influence
- 4:20Speaker 2: had long passed. He looked down at the Hebrew people,
- 4:24Speaker 2: multiplying into a great nation right under his nose. He
- 4:28Speaker 2: feared that if they continued to multiply, they would leave
- 4:31Speaker 2: Egypt and join their enemies. So the heavy hand of
- 4:35Speaker 2: Pharaoh descended upon the Hebrew people. To squash their hope
- 4:39Speaker 2: and fruitlessness, he enslaved them. Under the mighty boot of Egypt,
- 4:45Speaker 2: the sons and daughters of Israel were made slaves and tortured.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Pharaoh oppressed them with hard labor. yet there was a
- 4:53Speaker 2: blessing still upon them. Just as their ancestor Joseph had
- 4:57Speaker 2: thrived under slavery, so did the Hebrew people. They multiplied
- 5:01Speaker 2: even greater under the crucible of Pharaoh's cruelty. They were
- 5:06Speaker 2: forced to build cities, but ended up occupying them with
- 5:09Speaker 2: their numbers. Pharaoh, becoming more calloused and afraid, took his
- 5:14Speaker 2: cruelty to a new level. He gathered the Hebrew midwives,
- 5:18Speaker 2: those responsible for helping the Hebrew women with labor. While
- 5:22Speaker 2: you are aiding them in labor, allow the girls to live,
- 5:26Speaker 2: but kill any baby boy you see, he said. Pharaoh
- 5:31Speaker 2: would punish the midwives if they disobeyed. Luckily, the midwives
- 5:35Speaker 2: feared God more than Pharaoh. They would not do as
- 5:39Speaker 2: he commanded. When Pharaoh saw that the boys were still
- 5:42Speaker 2: being born, he gathered the midwives and asked, Why have
- 5:47Speaker 2: you disobeyed me? The midwives, with a quiet confidence of
- 5:51Speaker 2: someone who knows they did the right thing, simply said,
- 5:55Speaker 2: The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. They
- 5:59Speaker 2: are strong and vigorous, and have their babies so quickly
- 6:02Speaker 2: that we cannot get there in time. They lied. Yet
- 6:06Speaker 2: God blessed them. Pharaoh, determined to give in to the
- 6:10Speaker 2: darkness and pride gripping his heart, used his power to
- 6:13Speaker 2: enact a law God would never forgive. Throw every newborn
- 6:18Speaker 2: Hebrew boy into the Nile, Pharaoh decreed. And soldiers scattered
- 6:23Speaker 2: throughout the city, pulling screaming children from their mothers' arms.
- 6:27Speaker 2: The Nile had engulfed hundreds of babies. The screams of children,
- 6:33Speaker 2: mothers and fathers, echoed throughout all Egypt. Pharaoh's brutality acted
- 6:38Speaker 2: as a dark cloud shrouding over all the land. Tears
- 6:43Speaker 2: and blood filled the streets, and the heart of Pharaoh
- 6:46Speaker 2: grew darker and darker. Meanwhile, a Hebrew woman was concealing
- 6:52Speaker 2: her baby boy for three months. She nursed him in secret,
- 6:56Speaker 2: knowing that eventually he would be discovered. She wove a
- 6:59Speaker 2: basket of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch.
- 7:04Speaker 2: With the diligence of Noah and his ark, she crafted
- 7:07Speaker 2: a vessel of redemption for her son. and sent him
- 7:10Speaker 2: downstream towards the palaces. The baby boy's sister trailed the
- 7:15Speaker 2: basket down the river, keeping close watch from afar as
- 7:19Speaker 2: the basket traveled miles downstream. Soon, Pharaoh's daughter came to
- 7:24Speaker 2: the riverbank to bathe. She and her attendants played in
- 7:28Speaker 2: the water and relaxed in the sun. The princess saw
- 7:31Speaker 2: a basket floating along and sent her maid to go
- 7:34Speaker 2: fetch it. The princess peered into the basket carefully, to
- 7:38Speaker 2: find a baby boy swaddled and crying. Pity overcame the princess,
- 7:43Speaker 2: for she knew that the baby must have been Hebrew.
- 7:46Speaker 2: She fell in love with him and was determined to
- 7:49Speaker 2: care for him, but the baby needed a nurse. Suddenly,
- 7:53Speaker 2: the baby's sister emerged from the reeds by the river. Excited,
- 7:57Speaker 2: yet scared, she suggested that her mother could take care
- 8:01Speaker 2: of the child until he was grown. The princess agreed.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Thus the baby was raised by both his Hebrew biological
- 8:08Speaker 2: mother and his Egyptian adopted mother. He would grow up
- 8:12Speaker 2: in two worlds, never feeling fully part of one or
- 8:16Speaker 2: the other. The princess looked upon her son and gave
- 8:20Speaker 2: him the name Moses, for he was delivered out of
- 8:23Speaker 2: the water. Moses, now a prince of Egypt, would soon
- 8:28Speaker 2: realize what it truly means to be delivered.
- 8:34Speaker 3: As the book of Exodus opens, the Hebrew nation is
- 8:36Speaker 3: grown from Israel's family numbering 70 into a prosperous and
- 8:41Speaker 3: thriving people scattered throughout the land of Egypt. It was
- 8:45Speaker 3: just as God had promised Jacob that his descendants would
- 8:49Speaker 3: grow and be a great and mighty nation. Though living
- 8:53Speaker 3: far from Canaan, now living in a foreign land, God
- 8:56Speaker 3: did just as he promised. Israel was a mighty nation.
- 9:00Speaker 3: But there's a new Pharaoh on the throne. one who
- 9:03Speaker 3: knows nothing about Joseph or what God did through Joseph.
- 9:06Speaker 3: All he sees are the threats of the Hebrews, foreigners
- 9:09Speaker 3: multiplying his kingdom and growing into very wealthy people. So
- 9:14Speaker 3: fear seizes him and he seizes the Hebrews, enslaving them
- 9:17Speaker 3: and forcing them to work to build cities in his empire.
- 9:21Speaker 3: But God's blessing remains upon his people and their numbers
- 9:25Speaker 3: increase all the more. So the Pharaoh realizes that if
- 9:29Speaker 3: this continues in this way, the Hebrews will outnumber his
- 9:33Speaker 3: people and they could overtake his land by force. A deep, dark, evil,
- 9:38Speaker 3: devilish evil creeps into the heart of this man and
- 9:42Speaker 3: he orders the mass slaughter of male Hebrew babies. He
- 9:46Speaker 3: orders the midwives to perpetrate this heinous act, but they
- 9:48Speaker 3: fear God more than they fear Pharaoh, so they choose
- 9:52Speaker 3: to disobey the Pharaoh. These midwives certainly acted courageously. They
- 9:58Speaker 3: feared God more than they feared man. So they did
- 10:01Speaker 3: what they could to protect the lives of innocent babies.
- 10:04Speaker 3: God in turn chose to bless them because they did
- 10:07Speaker 3: the right thing, the godly thing. And the Hebrew population
- 10:12Speaker 3: increased despite Pharaoh's order of infanticide. Now Pharaoh is really mad,
- 10:17Speaker 3: enraged in fact. So he enlists his army to tear
- 10:20Speaker 3: babies from their mother's arms and throw them into the Nile.
- 10:25Speaker 3: As the Egyptian soldiers tear through Hebrew homes, one mother
- 10:29Speaker 3: conceives a plan to hide her boy and to save
- 10:32Speaker 3: his life. She bravely places her baby in a basket
- 10:37Speaker 3: and floats him down the great Nile River to be
- 10:39Speaker 3: discovered by an Egyptian woman. She trusted God to protect
- 10:44Speaker 3: her son and rescue him. and none other than Pharaoh's
- 10:48Speaker 3: daughter discovers the child and has compassion on him. And
- 10:53Speaker 3: God's faithfulness and trustworthiness does not stop there, of course.
- 10:57Speaker 3: He provides for this child's mother to nurse her baby
- 11:00Speaker 3: and to be with him until he's old enough to
- 11:02Speaker 3: go to the palace. His adoptive mother names the boy
- 11:06Speaker 3: Moses because she rescued him from the waters. Moses will
- 11:12Speaker 3: be raised in two worlds, close to his biological family,
- 11:16Speaker 3: a Hebrew but protected by the Pharaoh's hand because his
- 11:19Speaker 3: adoptive mother was herself an Egyptian princess. But it seems
- 11:24Speaker 3: that he grows up really not fitting into either world.
- 11:28Speaker 3: And yet God will work through Moses and use him,
- 11:31Speaker 3: one of the mightiest men who ever lived, to rescue
- 11:34Speaker 3: the enslaved Hebrews and take them to the land God
- 11:37Speaker 3: had promised. Before he gets there, though, Moses will experience
- 11:42Speaker 3: the sting of rejection in both his worlds, And it
- 11:44Speaker 3: will send him on a journey far from Egypt and
- 11:47Speaker 3: the suffering of his people till God shows up once
- 11:50Speaker 3: again and changes his life forever. We'll learn more about
- 11:54Speaker 3: that the next time. Dear God, we're often stunned by
- 11:59Speaker 3: the evil and the wickedness of humanity. And in today's story,
- 12:03Speaker 3: we have seen the worst kinds of evil that men
- 12:07Speaker 3: are able to commit. And yet through it all, we
- 12:11Speaker 3: see your protection, We see your provision and your promises fulfilled. Lord,
- 12:17Speaker 3: like the midwives, may we fear you more than we
- 12:21Speaker 3: fear men. May we be courageous always in our faith
- 12:25Speaker 3: and act in ways that please you. In Jesus' name, amen.
