Transcript
- 0:02Welcome to Bible Chat, where we have devotional conversations
- 0:06rooted in Scripture and relevant for today, December 22nd,
- 0:11Mystery, Fire, and the Messenger.
- 0:13There are moments in life that feel like a mystery.
- 0:16Things you can't explain, can't predict, and can't fully
- 0:19control. Proverbs chapter 30 verses 18 to
- 0:2219 says 3 things are too wonderful for me for I do not
- 0:25understand, and it lists the wonder of an eagle in the sky, a
- 0:29ship on the sea, and even the way of a man with a virgin.
- 0:32It's like scripture is saying some things are bigger than your
- 0:35understanding. And that's exactly where the
- 0:38Christmas story begins. God doing something beyond human
- 0:41explanation. Isaiah chapter 40 verse 3 says a
- 0:45voice cries in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord,
- 0:48make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
- 0:51That's not just poetic, that's a call to get ready, to make room
- 0:54to clear the clutter. Then Malachi chapter 3 verse one
- 0:57says, behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare
- 1:01the way before me. God wasn't silent, He was
- 1:04setting the stage. He was sending a messenger
- 1:06before he sent the Messiah. And in Matthew Chapter 11, Jesus
- 1:10explains that John the Baptist is that messenger.
- 1:13He even says among those born of women, there has arisen no one
- 1:17greater than John the Baptist. John wasn't polished.
- 1:21He wasn't trying to be popular. He was bold, intense, and
- 1:24completely focused on one thing, pointing people to Jesus.
- 1:28That's what preparing the way looks like.
- 1:30It's not just knowing facts about God.
- 1:32It's letting him rearrange your life.
- 1:34It's choosing honesty over pretending, repentance over
- 1:38excuses, obedience over comfort. And here's the crazy part.
- 1:42God still uses messengers. Sometimes it's a parent, a
- 1:46friend, a pastor, a random conversation, or even a moment
- 1:50where God convicts you quietly in your own heart.
- 1:52The question isn't whether God is speaking.
- 1:55The question is whether you're willing to listen, and whether
- 1:58you'll live in a way that points others to Jesus, too.
- 2:01Let's pray, Heavenly Father, help me recognize your voice and
- 2:05respond when you're calling me to prepare the way for you in my
- 2:07life. Remove what's distracting me,
- 2:10soften what's hardened in me, and straighten what's crooked in
- 2:13me. Make me brave like John, someone
- 2:15who points people to Jesus with my words and my life, even when
- 2:19I don't understand everything. Help me trust that you are
- 2:21moving in Jesus name, Amen. Imagine stepping into a new year
- 2:26with clarity in your spirit, strength in your soul, and the

- 3:32with God in today's three-year Bible Reading plan, Proverbs
- 3:373018 to 20. World English Bible.
- 3:41There are three things which are too amazing for me, 4 which I
- 3:44don't understand. The way of an eagle in the air,
- 3:46the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle
- 3:49of the sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.
- 3:52So is the way of an adulterous woman.
- 3:54She eats and wipes her mouth and says, I have done nothing wrong.
- 3:57Isaiah 41 to 8. World English Bible.
- 4:01Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.
- 4:04Speak comfortably to Jerusalem, and call out to her that her
- 4:07warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned, that
- 4:10she has received of Yahweh's hand double for all her sins.
- 4:14The voice of one who calls out. Prepare the way of Yahweh in the
- 4:17wilderness. Make a level highway in the
- 4:19desert for our God. Every valley shall be exalted,
- 4:23and every mountain and hill shall be made low.
- 4:26The uneven shall be made level, and the rough place is a plain.
- 4:29Yahweh's glory shall be revealed, and all flesh shall
- 4:32see it together. For the mouth of Yahweh has
- 4:34spoken it. The voice of one saying, Cry
- 4:36out. One said, What shall I cry?
- 4:39All flesh is like grass, and all its glory is like the flower of
- 4:42the field. The grass Withers, the flower
- 4:45fades because Yahweh's breath blows on it.
- 4:47Surely the people are like grass.
- 4:49The grass Withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God
- 4:52stands forever. Malachi, 3125.
- 4:56World English Bible. Behold, I send my messenger, and
- 4:59he will prepare the way before me.
- 5:01The Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.
- 5:05Behold, the messenger of the covenant whom you desire is
- 5:08coming, says Yahweh of armies. But who can endure the day of
- 5:11his coming? And who will stand when he
- 5:13appears? For he is like a refiner's fire
- 5:16and like launderer's soap, and he will sit as a refiner and
- 5:19purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and
- 5:23refine them as gold and silver, and they shall offer to Yahweh
- 5:27offerings in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and
- 5:30Jerusalem will be pleasant to Yahweh as in the days of old and
- 5:34as in ancient years. I will come near to you to
- 5:36judgement. I will be a swift witness
- 5:39against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against the
- 5:42perjurers, and against those who oppress the hireling in his
- 5:45wages, the widow and the fatherless, and who deprive the
- 5:48foreigner of justice. And don't fear me, says Yahweh
- 5:51of armies, Malachi 4. World English Bible.
- 5:55For behold, the day comes burning like a furnace, when all
- 5:59the proud and all who work wickedness will be stubble.
- 6:02The day that comes will burn them up, says Yahweh of armies,
- 6:05so that it will leave them neither root nor branch.
- 6:08But to you who fear my name shall the Sun of Righteousness
- 6:11arise with healing in its wings. You will go out and leap like
- 6:14calves of the stall. You shall tread down the wicked,
- 6:17for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet.
- 6:20In the day that I make, says Yahweh of armies, remember the
- 6:23law of Moses my servant, which I commanded to him in Horeb for
- 6:27all Israel, even statutes and ordinances.
- 6:31Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet, before the great
- 6:34and terrible day of Yahweh comes.
- 6:36He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the
- 6:39hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike
- 6:42the earth with a curse. Matthew 11, Seven to 15 World.
- 6:47English Bible. As these went their way, Jesus
- 6:49began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What did you go
- 6:53out into the wilderness to see? A Reed shaken by the wind?
- 6:57But what did you go out to see? A man in soft clothing?
- 7:00Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in King's houses.
- 7:03But why did you go out to see a prophet?
- 7:06Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet, for this is he
- 7:10of whom it is written. Behold, I send my messenger
- 7:13before your face, who will prepare your way before you.
- 7:16Most certainly I tell you, among those who are born of women
- 7:19there has not arisen anyone greater than John the Baptizer.
- 7:23Yet he who is least in the Kingdom of heaven is greater
- 7:25than he. From the days of John the
- 7:27Baptizer until now, the Kingdom of heaven suffers violence and
- 7:31the violent take it by force for all the prophets in the law
- 7:35prophesied until John. If you're willing to receive it,
- 7:38This is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him
- 7:42hear. Thanks for joining us on Bible
