- 0:13One number has been bugging me.
- 0:16ZipRecruiter says the median warehouse wage in Oklahoma City is fifteen dollars and
- 0:21sixty six cents an hour.
- 0:23Okay, that's, um, that's not great.
- 0:26Is that the real story, though?
- 0:27That's the floor, and it's misleading.
- 0:30Look at the listings on those same pages.
- 0:33POOLCORP, at 308 Hudiburg Circle, is hiring Warehouse Associates at nineteen to
- 0:38twenty dollars an hour.
- 0:39And they say up to twenty five hundred dollars more in performance bonuses.
- 0:44Wait, bonuses on top?
- 0:45For a warehouse job?
- 0:47That's what the listing says.
- 0:48The schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM.
- 0:51Thirteen days of paid time off, eight paid holidays, and fully funded tuition
- 0:56programs.
- 0:57And US Foods has a night forklift job at twenty three fifty to twenty four an hour,
- 1:02but it's forty five to fifty hours a week.
- 1:05Okay, so this is the daytime versus overtime fight again.
- 1:09I used to work mornings that started before sunrise, so I, I,
- 1:12I have opinions.
- 1:13Nights pay more.
- 1:15Fine.
- 1:15But who is that person at hour forty eight?
- 1:19Let's do the math first.
- 1:20A four dollar bump, across about one seventy three working hours a month,
- 1:25is roughly six hundred ninety two dollars gross.
- 1:28Six ninety two.
- 1:30That's a car payment and then some.
- 1:32Right.
- 1:32And that's before overtime.
- 1:34So the night shift is tempting.
- 1:36But, hmm, the listing says forty five to fifty.
- 1:41You're trading sleep and dinners for that six ninety two.
- 1:43And a lot of people think that's a good trade right up until week six.
- 1:48I'll concede the burnout part.
- 1:50But the daytime path isn't flat either.
- 1:53McKesson lists a warehouse worker starting at nineteen seventy,
- 1:56rising to twenty seventy eight within twelve months.
- 1:59So the raise is already scheduled.
- 2:01I like that.
- 2:02You don't have to ask for it or hustle for it.
- 2:05Exactly the point.
- 2:07Steady is boring, but boring is predictable.
- 2:10You can plan rent around a check you can see coming.
- 2:13Okay, but, but, I'd push back a little.
- 2:16If the rent is due Friday and the check is short, boring doesn't help you.
- 2:21Fair.
- 2:21That's where the rest of this goes.
- 2:23Okay, so say somebody's stuck at sixteen an hour.
- 2:27What's the way up that doesn't mean borrowing a pile of money?
- 2:31Francis Tuttle Technology Center has a Flex Health program for phlebotomy
- 2:35technician, at the Rockwell campus.
- 2:37Per their page, it's forty eight hours of instruction over ten weeks,
- 2:41self paced and hybrid.
- 2:43And the total cost is three ninety nine.
- 2:46Three ninety nine.
- 2:47Total?
- 2:49Like, everything?
- 2:50Tuition is two seventy nine, supplies are eighty, and the book is forty.
- 2:54That's the breakdown as we read it.
- 2:56Hourly pay afterward is roughly nineteen seventy one to twenty five sixty nine,
- 3:01though that range is a ballpark, so check it for yourself.
- 3:04And hybrid means I'm not quitting my job to sit in a classroom all day.
- 3:08Right.
- 3:09Students pick days and hours that fit and set a target end date.
- 3:13Some of it can be done over Zoom, though skills and exams happen in person.
- 3:17Okay.
- 3:17That's the long game.
- 3:19What about the short game?
- 3:20Because the rent doesn't care that I'm enrolled in something.
- 3:24That's Wonolo.
- 3:26Their Oklahoma City page says, quote, browse through a variety of same day jobs in
- 3:30various industries such as retail, logistics, event staff, and delivery.
- 3:35The warehouse shifts we saw run about a hundred to a hundred forty six eighty eight.
- 3:40Retail gigs go up to a hundred sixty two.
- 3:43A hundred forty six eighty eight.
- 3:45That's weirdly specific.
- 3:48Listings are specific.
- 3:50Those are one day payouts, and they'll vary, so treat them as examples.
- 3:55Can I admit something?
- 3:57When expenses pile up, I, I, I freeze.
- 3:59I do nothing.
- 4:00I tell myself I'll deal with it after payday, and then the bill is two bills.
- 4:05That's the part nobody budgets for.
- 4:08The delay costs more than the bill.
- 4:10Yeah.
- 4:11So is there a, a something for the actual rent crunch?
- 4:14Community Action Agency of Oklahoma City.
- 4:17Their site says, quote, we help families with young children access the tools they
- 4:22need to move out of poverty and thrive.
- 4:24They've got rent and mortgage assistance programs.
- 4:27The number listed is four oh five, two three two, oh one nine nine.
- 4:33Okay, and, um, there's a catch.
- 4:37Offices close.
- 4:38Call at 4:55 and you're talking to a voicemail.
- 4:42So that's the five o'clock rule.
- 4:44Do the thing before the office closes.
- 4:47Fine.
- 4:48One small step, today.
- 4:50Five minutes.
- 4:51Download Wonolo, or send Francis Tuttle a flexible training inquiry.
- 4:56And if the check is short this month, make the call before five.
- 5:00Yeah.
- 5:00I'll do it.
- 5:02Alright, that's it from me.
