- 0:00Speaker 1: Seven drives. That's how long it lasted today.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Seven drives, three points, and a five-star true freshman walking
- 0:08Speaker 2: to the sideline in his own stadium while.
- 0:11Speaker 1: The backup buckled up his chin strap.
- 0:13Speaker 2: And here's the part that nobody wants to say out loud,
- 0:16Speaker 2: but it's time to admit it probably was the right call.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Tennessee beat Auburn today.
- 0:22Speaker 2: They did it with a quarterback who really wasn't supposed
- 0:25Speaker 2: to be playing, a running back who couldn't get going
- 0:27Speaker 2: a week ago, and a defense that has quietly turned
- 0:31Speaker 2: into the most dependable thing in.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Knoxville, Tennessee. This was not a clean win, not even close.
- 0:37Speaker 2: And by the time the clock hit zero, Josh Heupel
- 0:40Speaker 2: has answered one question and opened up a completely different
- 0:44Speaker 2: one that's going to probably follow this program all week.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So let's talk about it here on SEC Football Addiction.
- 0:51Speaker 2: We are presented by PrizePix. We're all new users who

- 1:00Speaker 2: I do think that last Saturday matters. Tennessee lost to
- 1:03Speaker 2: Texas 20-17. Close game, good defense, and an offense that
- 1:07Speaker 2: just couldn't find any type of a gear. Faison Brandon
- 1:11Speaker 2: took a shot to his throwing shoulder in that one.
- 1:14Speaker 2: He left for a handful of snaps. He came back.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He finished with his worst yards per attempt. number on
- 1:21Speaker 2: the season. So the whole week leading up to Auburn
- 1:23Speaker 2: was about one thing. Can this offense get right? And
- 1:27Speaker 2: the game kicked off. Tennessee's first drive, nowhere, punt. Second drive,
- 1:33Speaker 2: Auburn drops Brandon a couple of times, three and out, punt.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And it kept going like that. Wide receiver screens that
- 1:39Speaker 2: lost yardage, throws that never really threatened anyone, scrambles that
- 1:43Speaker 2: went backwards. By the time Brandon came out of the game,
- 1:46Speaker 2: he was three for eight passing, had zero yards. Think
- 1:51Speaker 2: about how hard that is. You can complete three passes
- 1:55Speaker 2: and not move the ball a single yard through the air.
- 1:58Speaker 2: He also ran the ball four times, combined with sacks,
- 2:01Speaker 2: had negative yardage there too. Now, the defense was holding
- 2:04Speaker 2: up its end. More on that in a moment. But
- 2:08Speaker 2: outside of a 36-yard field goal in the second quarter
- 2:12Speaker 2: that gave you a 3-0 lead, this was as ugly
- 2:15Speaker 2: as it gets in the first half. A little over
- 2:18Speaker 2: five minutes left in the half. Brandon had a receiver open.
- 2:20Speaker 2: He stared him down the whole way. Xavier Atkins read it,
- 2:23Speaker 2: jumped it, and picked it off. Short field, and Byron
- 2:27Speaker 2: Brown punched it on the ground. Auburn takes a 7-3 lead,
- 2:30Speaker 2: and that was it. Josh didn't wait until halftime. George
- 2:34Speaker 2: McIntyre went out there with under four minutes to go
- 2:36Speaker 2: in the half, and Neyland Stadium seemed like they were
- 2:38Speaker 2: holding their breath. Here's what McIntyre did with that first look.
- 2:42Speaker 2: He went five for five, had 38 yards. The drive
- 2:46Speaker 2: ran out of clock just past midfield. I didn't think
- 2:49Speaker 2: that was managed super well, so nothing happened on the scoreboard,
- 2:53Speaker 2: but you could tell the ball was just coming out
- 2:55Speaker 2: a little more on time.
- 2:56Speaker 1: The offense looked like they had a little more rhythm.
- 2:59Speaker 1: There was a bit more of a pulse.
- 3:01Speaker 2: At halftime, Heupel told ESPN that Brandon just wasn't operating
- 3:04Speaker 2: and didn't feel 100%. I'll say that again because I
- 3:08Speaker 2: think there are two answers packed into that one sentence.
- 3:12Speaker 1: One is about performance. One is about health.
- 3:15Speaker 2: And depending on which half of the sentence you lean on,
- 3:18Speaker 2: you get two completely different stories about what will happen next.
- 3:21Speaker 2: I'll get there in a moment. The second half, that's
- 3:24Speaker 2: where this game turned. McIntyre trotted onto the field. opened
- 3:28Speaker 2: the third quarter and the offense looks like a different unit,
- 3:31Speaker 2: not flashy, just very functional and functional was all it
- 3:35Speaker 2: needed to be because the.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Sean Bishop was about to take over. He rips off a.
- 3:40Speaker 2: 25 yard touchdown run, puts Tennessee ahead. Then an interception
- 3:44Speaker 2: gives the ball back to Tennessee on the Auburn 44
- 3:48Speaker 2: Bishop again, 44 yards touchdown.
- 3:51Speaker 1: All of a sudden it's 17 to seven.
- 3:53Speaker 2: In the span of just a few minutes, Tennessee went
- 3:55Speaker 2: from an offense with no life and a quarterback that
- 3:58Speaker 2: couldn't do anything to a two-score lead and a crowd
- 4:02Speaker 2: that I've been waiting on since I was there last
- 4:04Speaker 2: week to finally have something to yell about.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Auburn didn't fold.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Early in the fourth, Byron Brown broke loose for a 57-yarder.
- 4:11Speaker 2: He then hit Bordingham from 15, 16 yards out. They went, what,
- 4:17Speaker 2: 94 yards on that drive? All of a sudden, it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: 17 to 14, and this thing is tight in the
- 4:22Speaker 2: fourth quarter. Here's the moment, though, the one that decided it.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Auburn has the ball, third and short. Tennessee stuffs it,
- 4:29Speaker 2: fourth and inches. Auburn goes for it. They pitch to
- 4:32Speaker 2: the perimeter, and the volunteers blow it up. Tennessee gets
- 4:35Speaker 2: the ball back on a short field. They do exactly
- 4:38Speaker 2: what they'd been doing all half, hand the ball to Bishop.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Let the line lean on people in the fourth quarter.
- 4:44Speaker 1: Touchdown.
- 4:44Speaker 2: It's 24-14 with three minutes left. Auburn gets one more shot.
- 4:48Speaker 2: They get into the red zone. And then Dye gets
- 4:50Speaker 2: a hand on a pass. I think it was Metcalf
- 4:53Speaker 2: that came down with it.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Ball game. It's over.
- 4:56Speaker 2: I have three things I want to talk to you
- 4:58Speaker 2: about this game really quick. And then I'll let you
- 4:59Speaker 2: get back to watching college football this Saturday. Appreciate you
- 5:02Speaker 2: guys being subscribed. I spoke with alumni hall this week
- 5:06Speaker 2: and Tennessee fans are absolutely killing everyone else that buys
- 5:10Speaker 2: any year from alumni hall. Now they're based in nine.
- 5:13Speaker 2: So you guys have an advantage. There's more stores. You
- 5:16Speaker 2: guys really like me.
- 5:16Speaker 1: I get it.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Keep doing it. Let's increase that lead. They said, we
- 5:20Speaker 2: love the Tennessee fans. I know you're celebrating the win.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Hopefully you're celebrating. Look, I know it wasn't the prettiest thing.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Hopefully you're celebrating the win. Use our code CFA15. Just
- 5:30Speaker 2: anything from polos, T-shirts, SEC gear. If you want the
- 5:33Speaker 2: pins that say, you know, beat Arkansas next week or
- 5:36Speaker 2: beat Bama in two weeks, go get them.
- 5:38Speaker 1: All from Alumni Hall.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Save 15% with CFA15. The folks at Alumni Hall appreciate
- 5:42Speaker 2: you guys. They appreciate you watching our show. We appreciate
- 5:45Speaker 2: you guys for supporting them as well. All right, three takeaways.
- 5:48Speaker 1: We'll get out of here.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I want to start with the one that's certainly become
- 5:51Speaker 2: the identity of this team. This defense is top three
- 5:55Speaker 2: in the SEC, and that's not up for debate. Listen,
- 5:58Speaker 2: last year, I thought you had the best offense in
- 6:00Speaker 2: the SEC and.
- 6:01Speaker 1: The worst defense. This year, tables have turned. I don't
- 6:04Speaker 1: think you're the worst offense.
- 6:05Speaker 2: I know they're trying to figure some stuff out right now,
- 6:07Speaker 2: but what this defense has done through now, what, five
- 6:11Speaker 2: games of the season is my hat's off to you
- 6:14Speaker 2: and I don't even have a hat on. My hair
- 6:15Speaker 2: probably looks crazy from chasing the kids around in the
- 6:17Speaker 2: backyard today. But when Tennessee hired Jim Knowles, the question
- 6:21Speaker 2: was whether his system could translate and how long that
- 6:24Speaker 2: would take to happen. Would it take a year? Were
- 6:26Speaker 2: the pieces there? Would the injuries be way too much? Well,
- 6:30Speaker 2: five games in boys, the pieces are there. Auburn's first
- 6:33Speaker 2: four drives all went three and out. If I remember
- 6:36Speaker 2: it correctly, they were finally able to move the chains
- 6:41Speaker 2: and And then they fumbled it right back to you.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Auburn's only first half touchdown came on a drive that
- 6:49Speaker 2: started in the red zone because the offense gave him
- 6:51Speaker 2: the ball through the first half of this game. Your
- 6:54Speaker 2: defense didn't give up a point that wasn't gift wrapped.
- 6:58Speaker 2: And lane was everywhere today. I believe he had nine tackles,
- 7:01Speaker 2: two sacks, two and a half tackles for loss.
- 7:04Speaker 1: He had a pick. He had a quarterback hurry on
- 7:06Speaker 1: top of it. It's not a stat line.
- 7:09Speaker 2: It's an absolute highlight reel every time he was featured
- 7:12Speaker 2: on the TV. Then you get to the fourth quarter.
- 7:15Speaker 2: The game's on the line. Auburn needs just inches, and
- 7:17Speaker 2: they couldn't get them. Here's the thing that should excite
- 7:20Speaker 2: Tennessee fans the most. They did this without Moss in
- 7:24Speaker 2: the secondary. Coming into today, this defense was allowing about 15.5
- 7:29Speaker 2: points per game. They held Texas to just 20 last week.
- 7:34Speaker 2: You held Auburn under your average, barely, but at 14.
- 7:37Speaker 2: And one of those touchdowns came on a short field.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I don't think Auburn has a prolific offense, but they
- 7:43Speaker 2: still put, what, 39 on UF a couple of weeks ago.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Like, they're not pedestrian.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I know you guys are probably celebrating that Missouri win
- 7:50Speaker 2: against UF, too, at the same time as your win. But,
- 7:55Speaker 2: two straight weeks against sec offenses where the defense was
- 7:59Speaker 2: the reason that Tennessee was in this game.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Now, last week, it wasn't enough. I get it.
- 8:03Speaker 2: But this week it was Jim Knowles is working some
- 8:05Speaker 2: magic right now. And the scary part is that this
- 8:08Speaker 2: is just year one takeaway to the running game is
- 8:13Speaker 2: back to me. And I think it saved this team
- 8:15Speaker 2: today against Texas. There was no ground game. Bishop couldn't
- 8:19Speaker 2: get going. Morris couldn't get going. The line wasn't moving anybody.
- 8:22Speaker 2: We've talked about how good that Texas front is, and
- 8:24Speaker 2: so I'm not trying to relitigate that. But when you
- 8:27Speaker 2: can't run the ball in a hypo offense, everything else
- 8:30Speaker 2: gets harder. And today, Bishop flipped that entire storyline. 34 carries,
- 8:36Speaker 2: 220 yards, all three touchdowns in the game. I believe
- 8:42Speaker 2: that's a career high in both yards and touchdowns.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And he did it in an SEC game all in.
- 8:49Speaker 2: The second half from a scoring perspective when his team
- 8:52Speaker 2: was down 7-3 at halftime with a quarterback situation that
- 8:56Speaker 2: was falling apart. Morris had 32 yards on 8 carries.
- 9:01Speaker 2: And it was a ground attack that gave McIntyre the
- 9:04Speaker 2: easiest possible job. Hand the freaking ball off. Read the defense.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Make the simple throws when they're there. And look, that's
- 9:12Speaker 2: the formula. That's how you're going to have to win
- 9:14Speaker 2: games until you figure out the quarterback position. You have
- 9:19Speaker 2: to lean on your guys up front. You got to
- 9:21Speaker 2: give a hot back the ball. You got to let
- 9:24Speaker 2: your defense do the rest. And don't skip past the
- 9:27Speaker 2: guys up front here. A week ago, this same line
- 9:29Speaker 2: could not get push against Texas. And I know that's
- 9:32Speaker 2: a different front than Auburn has. But today in the
- 9:35Speaker 2: second half, Tennessee was the one that was setting the tone.
- 9:38Speaker 2: 34 carries for one back does not happen by accident.
- 9:42Speaker 2: That's a coaching staff looking at its line at halftime
- 9:45Speaker 2: and saying, we're going to win this thing with you
- 9:47Speaker 2: guys right here in the trenches, and we're going to
- 9:49Speaker 2: dare Auburn to stop it. And the Tigers couldn't. There's
- 9:53Speaker 2: a ripple effect to that too. When you can run
- 9:56Speaker 2: the ball like that, you shorten the game. You keep
- 9:59Speaker 2: your defense fresh. Maybe you don't want Bishop breaking it
- 10:02Speaker 2: off for 44 yards. Give those guys a little bit
- 10:05Speaker 2: more of a rest, but you keep a quarterback who
- 10:09Speaker 2: just came off the bench out of third and long.
- 10:12Speaker 2: And every one of those things that I just mentioned
- 10:14Speaker 2: showed up today with the run game. Bishop didn't just
- 10:17Speaker 2: get back on track. He put the whole offense back
- 10:20Speaker 2: on track with him. Takeaway number three, this is the
- 10:23Speaker 2: big one. I saved it for last. What happens at quarterback?
- 10:27Speaker 2: As much as I've praised the defense and the running
- 10:29Speaker 2: game and the line, this is where it's uncomfortable. Now,
- 10:32Speaker 2: McIntyre did finish 8 of 10, 86 yards, no touchdowns,
- 10:35Speaker 2: no picks.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Not a great game.
- 10:36Speaker 2: He's not, to me, certainly gone out and claimed it
- 10:41Speaker 2: as far as the starting job.
- 10:43Speaker 1: But it was clean. It was mistake-free. It seemed to
- 10:47Speaker 1: just flow a little better.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And next to what we saw in the first half
- 10:50Speaker 2: from Brandon, it did look like a completely different offense.
- 10:55Speaker 1: The question is now, who starts next week?
- 10:58Speaker 2: The case for McIntyre is that he was the guy
- 11:01Speaker 2: who lost the camp battle, and when his number got
- 11:03Speaker 2: called mid-game in an SEC game where his team was losing,
- 11:07Speaker 2: he was ready. The operation ran a lot smoother. The
- 11:10Speaker 2: ball came out. Nobody panicked. In a season where Tennessee's
- 11:14Speaker 2: defense is good enough to win big games, a quarterback
- 11:17Speaker 2: who doesn't give the ball away might be exactly what
- 11:19Speaker 2: this team needs. The case for Brandon is pretty simple, too.
- 11:23Speaker 2: He's a true freshman. Before today, he had seven touchdown
- 11:26Speaker 2: passes and no picks on the season. Today was his
- 11:29Speaker 2: first career game with a pick. And remember that halftime quote.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Heibel said he wasn't feeling 100%. I don't know if
- 11:36Speaker 2: he's still banged up from last week. ESPN sideline reporter
- 11:39Speaker 2: said he looked as dejected as she'd seen him all year.
- 11:43Speaker 2: I don't know if the shoulder is still bothering him
- 11:44Speaker 2: from the Texas game. If so, maybe it wasn't a
- 11:48Speaker 2: true benching. Maybe it was a kid playing hurt. Here's
- 11:51Speaker 2: the honest truth. Both of those things can be real
- 11:54Speaker 2: at the same time. I don't think Brandon's future in
- 11:58Speaker 2: Knoxville is in full question. I still think he's a
- 12:02Speaker 2: guy that you can build around going forward. But for
- 12:05Speaker 2: this season, he's You've got a defense and a running
- 12:08Speaker 2: game that are ready to win right now. And I
- 12:11Speaker 2: don't think Josh Hypole is going to sit here and
- 12:13Speaker 2: wait on somebody to develop. He's going to go with
- 12:15Speaker 2: the guy that gives him the better chance on Saturday.
- 12:19Speaker 2: What would I do? Nobody's asking that, but I'll tell
- 12:22Speaker 2: you anyway.
- 12:22Speaker 1: If Brandon's healthy, I think it's an open competition this week.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And practice will decide it.
- 12:28Speaker 2: And then you're ready to pull the plug on either
- 12:30Speaker 2: guy that is not performing well in an SEC game
- 12:34Speaker 2: against Arkansas, who you should beat. If he's not healthy,
- 12:38Speaker 2: then I'm giving McIntyre almost all of the first team reps,
- 12:41Speaker 2: and that's not a conversation.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Either way, I'm not just.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Handing the job to either of these guys by default.
- 12:48Speaker 1: We need to see how it goes.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Because there's a difference between protecting a young quarterback and
- 12:53Speaker 2: protecting your entire season. And right now, Tennessee needs to
- 12:57Speaker 2: do both. I want to zoom out. Tennessee won this game.
- 13:01Speaker 2: They covered the line opened at seven and a half
- 13:04Speaker 2: and it was maybe closer to six and a half
- 13:06Speaker 2: by kickoff and Tennessee won by 10. So if you're Tennessee,
- 13:10Speaker 2: you should be happy tonight. I know it didn't look
- 13:13Speaker 2: the prettiest at times. I don't think this was some
- 13:15Speaker 2: statement victory that announces to the national scene that you
- 13:19Speaker 2: are back all of a sudden, but that's okay. You
- 13:23Speaker 2: don't play pretty every week. Would you rather be in
- 13:25Speaker 2: your shoes this week or Florida shoes this week? Would
- 13:29Speaker 2: you rather be in your shoes this week or Mississippi
- 13:32Speaker 2: State's shoes this week? You're not always going to play pretty.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Some Saturdays you've got to find a way, and Tennessee
- 13:38Speaker 2: found a way today. They took a punch and they
- 13:40Speaker 2: responded back, and then some. What matters now is the
- 13:44Speaker 2: next couple of weeks. Arkansas next week on the road,
- 13:48Speaker 2: then Alabama for the third Saturday in October. If the
- 13:52Speaker 2: defense keeps playing like this, they're going to be in
- 13:55Speaker 2: every single game they play for the rest of the year.
- 13:58Speaker 2: I don't think that's hype. That's just what five weeks
- 14:00Speaker 2: of film is telling us. The question we didn't think
- 14:04Speaker 2: this year was going to be whether or not the
- 14:06Speaker 2: defense could carry you guys.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It's whether or not the offense can catch up.
- 14:11Speaker 2: It was a good game today. It was a good
- 14:13Speaker 2: result against an opponent that's got talent. And now you
- 14:16Speaker 2: move on. Now you try and find a way to
- 14:18Speaker 2: win against Arkansas and you welcome Alabama to town.
- 14:21Speaker 1: I would love to hear your thoughts on this.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I would love to know what you think about the
- 14:25Speaker 2: McIntyre Brandon situation and Where does Josh go?
- 14:28Speaker 1: I think you leave it open. I don't think you're
- 14:30Speaker 1: handing anybody anything on Sunday morning.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I think you leave it open, see how this week goes,
- 14:34Speaker 2: see if Faison's hurt, what the situation is, and then
- 14:37Speaker 2: you're ready to swap them out. Fortunately, Arkansas is an
- 14:40Speaker 2: opponent that you can have some flexibility with that. Appreciate
- 14:43Speaker 2: you guys for tuning in. Appreciate our friends over at PrizeSpace. Again,
