- 0:00The Sun shines out of you and into me.
- 0:04Hello, Sun shines and welcome to reimagining with I understood a podcast where we reframe,
- 0:12rethink and reimagine everything, standing in the way of love and liberation.
- 0:18I'm your host, Ayyanda and I am delighted, enchanted, ecstatic, overjoyed to have a slice
- 0:24of your precious time today.
- 0:31I feel so much love and gratitude in my heart for my TikTok community.
- 0:38You have changed my life.
- 0:40You've changed my life.
- 0:43You've changed my life.
- 0:47You've changed my life.
- 0:50You've changed my life.
- 0:55You've changed my life.
- 0:59changed how I see myself and my purpose in this world.
- 1:03And I am so grateful to each and every one of you
- 1:05for believing in me.
- 1:06So if you came from TikTok, just know you are elite.
- 1:09Okay, I mean, in the anti elite.
- 1:12Okay, whatever, I'm not gonna do that right now.
- 1:14But anyway, I'm so excited to have you with me today
- 1:17and to everyone else who supports me.
- 1:19I am so grateful to have you welcomed into the fold.
- 1:22We are sunshine, the sun shines out of us,
- 1:25the sun shines into us and we are dedicated to loving
- 1:30and to liberating each other and ourselves.
- 1:32Okay, so I want to say that I have really struggled
- 1:36to bring this to your ears.
- 1:38It's been shocking to me how much I've struggled.
- 1:41You know why?
- 1:41Because I started on short form.
- 1:44You know, I started on TikTok and I was like,
- 1:46well, everyone has a podcast.
- 1:47I'm gonna have a podcast and it's gonna be great
- 1:49because we love everyone, right?
- 1:50It's okay, not a scarcity mindset abundance.
- 1:52So then I was like, well, this is gonna be
- 1:54just easy, peasy, lemon, squeezy.
- 1:56I'm just gonna go and start a podcast.
- 1:58And I would imagine it, I would walk around,
- 2:00walk around the streets and I would listen to music
- 2:03and I'd be like, I'm gonna have the most fire podcast
- 2:05and people are gonna learn from me and grow with me
- 2:07and I'm gonna have a community
- 2:08and I'm gonna say fire things like I would picture myself
- 2:11just speaking and just like vibing in my energy.
- 2:13Just chatting and having profound things to say.
- 2:16Well, little did she know it's so much more difficult
- 2:19than I could have ever imagined.
- 2:20Do you know why?
- 2:21Because I suffer from toxic perfectionism.
- 2:25Like I literally do not know how to share myself
- 2:30with the world and the difference is
- 2:31that I also want to just share with you.
- 2:33TikTok is like a safe space.
- 2:34It's not hate comments, online hate.
- 2:36Like there's a lot of harassment.
- 2:37There's a lot of horrible things.
- 2:39But the vibe on TikTok, it's like this curated group
- 2:42of people who came to vibe.
- 2:45But then podcasts, it's like there's my family,
- 2:47there's my friends, there's people that I go to school
- 2:49but there's just so many different voices
- 2:50and this is the same reason why I struggle with Instagram.
- 2:53It's just the fear of judgment
- 2:55but also such a mixture of judgment
- 2:57from different groups of people.
- 2:58It's overwhelming, it's daunting, it's confusing.
- 3:01So I wanna just say that to anyone else
- 3:04who is struggling with sharing their voice, babes, babes,
- 3:08babes, hit me up, okay?
- 3:09Cause I got you.
- 3:11I love you and you are so far from alone, okay?
- 3:14It is a struggle.
- 3:15I think people see you posting your things
- 3:18as if you don't feel embarrassed.
- 3:19I'm embarrassed every single day of my life.
- 3:21Do I have more mechanisms to cope with the embarrassment?
- 3:24I mean, maybe who actually knows in reality?
- 3:27It's just about zooming out and asking myself, okay,
- 3:31am I willing to just put up with this little demon
- 3:33in my backyard called embarrassment?
- 3:35Actually in my front yard, in my house, in my room,
- 3:37in my bed with me, in order to serve the vision
- 3:40that I have for myself.
- 3:41So if I'm on a started podcast
- 3:43and for the first few episodes,
- 3:44I don't know how to say the P sound
- 3:46without sounding like I'm screaming in your ear,
- 3:49that's just what we're gonna have to do, you know what I mean?
- 3:51The end is in place and the means are what they are
- 3:54and they involve embarrassment and they involve mistakes
- 3:56and they involve letting go, letting go.
- 3:59People are gonna judge me, you know what I mean?
- 4:00Because that's what we do.
- 4:01As human beings, that's what we do, we judge, we judge.
- 4:04People are gonna judge me, but my people are gonna hold me
- 4:07and we're gonna grow together, okay?
- 4:09So this is really a labor of love, a labor of delight,
- 4:12a labor of pure loving energy, okay?
- 4:15If you are struggling to find your voice,
- 4:17I just want you to reframe that for a second.
- 4:19Think of every single, think of your favorite song,
- 4:22your favorite movie, your favorite book,
- 4:24your favorite TikTok creator, your favorite artist,
- 4:26your favorite singer,
- 4:28each of these people have grappled with their own fears,
- 4:32with their own anxieties, with their own obstacles
- 4:36to bringing their art into the world
- 4:38and did it not change your life that they did it?
- 4:40In spite of that fear, in spite of that anxiety,
- 4:44in spite of that perfectionism that told them
- 4:46it wasn't perfect enough, they wrote the book,
- 4:48they shared the book, okay, with help and community
- 4:50and support, I'm not saying do it alone,
- 4:52please don't do it alone, that's another lesson I've learned.
- 4:54Don't try to do things alone, oh my goodness,
- 4:56it's like I cannot convince myself enough
- 4:58that this is a mistake, and I know it in theory,
- 5:01I'm like, oh, I should ask for help,
- 5:02but then it comes to the thing and I'm like,
- 5:04I'll just do this by myself,
- 5:05I'll just come up with this entire episode by myself,
- 5:07I'll just write it by myself, I'll just edit it,
- 5:09but you know what I mean?
- 5:10And it's like, no, no, we're not gonna do that anymore,
- 5:14or at least we're gonna try and stop
- 5:15because we deserve support,
- 5:17and when you ask for support, you deepen your connection
- 5:20with the person who you're asking,
- 5:22because they are seeing you as someone who can be vulnerable
- 5:27and you are getting the gift of being able to lean on somebody,
- 5:31okay, which is what you deserve, okay?
- 5:34Lean on me, when you're not strong,
- 5:38I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
- 5:43for if not wise, okay, perfect.
- 5:48So moving on, basically all that to say,
- 5:51even your favorite TV show,
- 5:53there were so many people, directors, artists,
- 5:56set creators, writers, screen adapters, whatever the fuck
- 6:00who had doubt, and what did they do?
- 6:02They turned that doubt into art that we enjoy,
- 6:05and that changes the way that we see and perceive
- 6:07and move through the world, and aren't we so grateful?
- 6:09So I am joining that beautiful tradition today
- 6:12of just doing it, I'm just doing it, like here I am,
- 6:14what am I doing?
- 6:15It's okay, and that's something to celebrate.
- 6:17I am so grateful for you, you don't understand this,
- 6:20but it takes a bunch of little use to make a community,
- 6:24and so thank you specifically, I love you.
- 6:27As we think about this concept of perfectionism
- 6:30and finding your voice and also fear and anxiety,
- 6:33I really want to mark the beginning of this journey with you
- 6:36with an Audrey Lorde quote that has literally nourished me,
- 6:40and we must nourish ourselves and nourish each other.
- 6:42For the past literally like three years, literally,
- 6:46I have a note on my notes app, okay,
- 6:49with three Audrey Lorde quotes,
- 6:50and they are also special and divine and precious,
- 6:53and I love each of them,
- 6:54and I originally thought I was only going to read one of them
- 6:57to you because I was like, you know, I gotta be crisp,
- 7:00but why?
- 7:01I don't have to be anything, but myself, okay,
- 7:03so these are the three quotes, number one,
- 7:07let's breathe together.
- 7:11What are the words you do not yet have?
- 7:15What do you need to say?
- 7:17What are the tyrannies you swallow day by day
- 7:21and attempt to make your own
- 7:24until you will sicken and die of them still in silence?
- 7:29Whew!
- 7:31Wow, what are the words you do not yet have?
- 7:35What do you need to say?
- 7:37What do you need to say?
- 7:40That is such a profound question.
- 7:42What do you need to say?
- 7:43And maybe it will become one of the questions
- 7:45and I ask my guests, the second quote is this,
- 7:48and I resonate with this deeply, she says,
- 7:51and of course I am afraid,
- 7:53because the transformation of silence into language
- 7:58and action is an act of self-revelation
- 8:01and that all of the things that I do,
- 8:04is an act of self-revelation
- 8:07and that always seems fraught with danger.
- 8:10Wow, whew!
- 8:12Sharing yourself, being in your truth,
- 8:15is fraught, is filled with danger.
- 8:17This is very real physical danger
- 8:19in terms of all the people who have been killed,
- 8:21who have been murdered, who have been imprisoned
- 8:24for speaking against systems of power,
- 8:27systems of oppression, fascism, regimes,
- 8:30and then also the feeling of writing
- 8:33in a journal and fearing that someone will read it.
- 8:36It always just seems so scary to move into our truth
- 8:40and to share it unabashedly, even with ourselves.
- 8:43The third and final quote is as follows
- 8:46in the cause of silence.
- 8:49Each of us draws the face of her own fear.
- 8:52Isn't that beautiful?
- 8:53Drawing the face of fear.
- 8:56Fear of contempt, of censure, or some judgment, or recognition.
- 9:00Oh, sometimes we do fear being recognized.
- 9:03Fear of challenge, of annihilation, that's critical.
- 9:07But most of all, I think we fear the visibility
- 9:13without which we cannot truly live.
- 9:17Wow, and then we think about coming out,
- 9:20when we think about sharing our truth,
- 9:21when we think about sharing ourselves,
- 9:23we fear the visibility without which we cannot truly live.
- 9:27What a beautiful paradox,
- 9:29what a beautiful embrace of the tension of visibility
- 9:32that we both yearn to be visible,
- 9:34and somehow we find comfort as well in invisibility.
- 9:38We both are invisibilized and invisibilized ourselves.
- 9:41I don't know what I'm saying, but I think it makes sense to someone.
- 9:44So I'm gonna continue,
- 9:46because that was precious and that was special,
- 9:48and I'm so grateful.
- 9:50And isn't it funny how time all connects?
- 9:52Like who would have thought when I was reading this essay
- 9:55by Audrey Lorde, like four or three years ago,
- 9:58that it would one day be in my podcast,
- 10:00that's shocking, I'm so surprised.
- 10:02In case you don't know who Audrey Lorde is,
- 10:04was she's passed,
- 10:06may she rest in peace, power and love and liberation,
- 10:08she is a black African-American lesbian mother,
- 10:11warrior and poet,
- 10:13and she dedicated both her life and her work
- 10:16to confronting and addressing injustices of racism,
- 10:20sexism, classism, and homophobia.
- 10:23So when we think about fearing the visibility without which we cannot
- 10:26truly live, that really grounds us.
- 10:29Let's put it in the soil of this conversation today.
- 10:32Of like clearly, I needed to say this,
- 10:34clearly I needed this visibility, clearly,
- 10:37the fact that I was willing to struggle with this and wrestle
- 10:39with this podcast,
- 10:41it means I cannot live without being seen in a certain way.
- 10:45And then when you think of the danger of it,
- 10:46I want you to be compassionate with me, okay?
- 10:49I want grace.
- 10:50I'm learning to ask for the things that I want
- 10:53and ask for the things that I need,
- 10:54because that creates deeper connection.
- 10:55I am so fearful of people just being mean to me,
- 11:00because people are so mean.
- 11:02And this happens on the internet all the time
- 11:03and it's often a barrier and obstacle for me
- 11:06in sharing what I really have to say
- 11:07and in sharing my voice.
- 11:09And I embrace that fear and I do it anyway,
- 11:12but I'm still so fearful,
- 11:14because people are so brutal,
- 11:16people are so uncompassionate.
- 11:19And as we walk this journey together of this podcast
- 11:22as a community, I want us to be gentle with each other.
- 11:25I'm going to make mistakes 100,000%.
- 11:28And I'm always learning and growing
- 11:30and evolving my perspective.
- 11:32But what I need in return,
- 11:34and I mean in exchange, I don't like this language,
- 11:36it sounds very like capitalistic,
- 11:38it sounds very like we're commodifying love.
- 11:40But what I ask for is to be held in my complexity
- 11:44and not to go without critique or go without challenge,
- 11:48but that we can always, always choose
- 11:50to criticize each other with love
- 11:52if that person's intentions are love.
- 11:55And my intention is love,
- 11:57like my intention in the way that I am sharing
- 11:59this content, sharing my voice
- 12:01and also just trying to live my life is rooted in love.
- 12:05And with that, I think I ask for a loving form
- 12:10of communication with one another.
- 12:12Those are the values that I want our community to have.
- 12:15I'm standing for love.
- 12:16And so I hope that in critiquing and sharing
- 12:19and evolving our opinions together,
- 12:20we will also support each other
- 12:22and hold each other in love.
- 12:24So the podcast as it evolves
- 12:26is going to take many different formats.
- 12:28There's going to be episodes where it's just me,
- 12:31there's going to be more formal episodes
- 12:33where I'm kind of reading something that is more thought out
- 12:36and there's going to be others where we just vibe.
- 12:38Like maybe I just went on a date
- 12:39and I'm excited, what's that?
- 12:41There's also going to be conversations with guests.
- 12:44But the purpose of this two-part series of me speaking
- 12:48is to lay some foundations of the podcast,
- 12:52but also of the episode itself.
- 12:54We are starting off re-imagining beauty.
- 12:58That is where we are beginning together.
- 13:01Join me on our next episode, The Ugliness of Beauty.
- 13:04Thank you so much, Sunshine,
- 13:05for listening to this welcoming episode.
- 13:07I'm so excited to be on this journey with you.
- 13:10I shine through you, you shine through me,
- 13:12and we shine to get through.
- 13:14Okay, I'll see you next time.
- 13:18That's it, Sunshine.
- 13:20Thank you so much for listening to re-imagining with, I understood,
- 13:24a podcast where we reframe, re-think,
- 13:26and reimagine all things,
- 13:28standing in the way of love and liberation.
