- 0:02Speaker 1: All Star Kyle Stowers joining us right now at Marlins Camp. Kyle,
- 0:06Speaker 1: great to have you on here, and I do want
- 0:08Speaker 1: to start there. How do you sum up twenty twenty
- 0:11Speaker 1: five before you enter this twenty twenty six regular season?
- 0:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I think the coolest part is just to look back
- 0:19Speaker 3: at where I was at last year at this point,
- 0:22Speaker 3: and it's been quite different circumstances. So just grateful to
- 0:27Speaker 3: be in the spot that I'm in now. And man,
- 0:30Speaker 3: this time last year I was kind of in a
- 0:31Speaker 3: full panic modes. It's so nice to not be in
- 0:35Speaker 3: that spot as much.
- 0:36Speaker 4: He's big time. He didn't even have to play it
- 0:38Speaker 4: today against Team Missions. He's so big time now he
- 0:41Speaker 4: picks and chooses. He's like, oh, they're not a real
- 0:43Speaker 4: big league team. I don't want to play against them today,
- 0:46Speaker 4: So Clayton, I'm taking the day all.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Well.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Last year, Kyle, during a time like this, you're getting
- 0:54Speaker 1: ready for a spring training game. How different was it
- 0:58Speaker 1: for you from a prep standpoint? Right now, you're prepping
- 1:01Speaker 1: for being your best self in the regular season. Last year,
- 1:04Speaker 1: in spring training you're trying to make a name for
- 1:06Speaker 1: yourself and make sure that the team knows you're here
- 1:08Speaker 1: to stay.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, I think, you know, And there's there's still
- 1:12Speaker 3: a little bit of that, you know, like I don't
- 1:14Speaker 3: want to lose the edge that you know, I think
- 1:16Speaker 3: I've had in all the you know, big leagu camps
- 1:19Speaker 3: I've been in, Like I think, you know, all I
- 1:21Speaker 3: know is going into spring training needing to be ready
- 1:24Speaker 3: to compete, you know, and compete for a job. And
- 1:25Speaker 3: so you know, for me, it's not like, oh, like
- 1:28Speaker 3: you know, let's just you know, keep the punt off,
- 1:30Speaker 3: the gas pedal until you know, the season starts. For me,
- 1:33Speaker 3: there's you know, just trying to be intentional with my
- 1:35Speaker 3: work and yeah, we have a little bit more perspective
- 1:38Speaker 3: of you know, you know, you don't want to you know,
- 1:41Speaker 3: go maybe full gas you know, at all times.
- 1:44Speaker 2: But that being said, I don't don't want to lose
- 1:45Speaker 2: that edge of competing.
- 1:47Speaker 4: How do you turn it off?
- 1:49Speaker 2: That's probably I don't know how to turn off.
- 1:53Speaker 4: You said, you know you're not going full gas, But
- 1:54Speaker 4: how do you turn it off in a in a game,
- 1:56Speaker 4: in a spring training.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Yeah, And that I think when it's when it comes
- 1:58Speaker 3: to the game and it comes I think for me,
- 2:00Speaker 3: it's like rather than it's less about the games, I
- 2:02Speaker 3: would say. I would say it's more in the cage maybe,
- 2:05Speaker 3: like if I'm not feeling as good as I will,
- 2:07Speaker 3: rather than like trying to hack it out in the day.
- 2:08Speaker 3: You know, it's being a little bit more mindful of
- 2:10Speaker 3: stuff like that, you know, especially I think finishing the
- 2:12Speaker 3: year injured, the last month injured, you know, just being
- 2:15Speaker 3: a little bit more mindful that we're trying to trying
- 2:17Speaker 3: to get through, you know, hopefully into October, right, And
- 2:20Speaker 3: so I think that's where the changes.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Are for me.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Are you a big swinger or do you take a
- 2:24Speaker 4: million swing?
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm a guy that can definitely spend a lot
- 2:28Speaker 3: of time in the cage and probably probably too much.
- 2:30Speaker 4: And what about like live VP? Do you are you
- 2:32Speaker 4: a taker? Are you a are you a watcher? And
- 2:35Speaker 4: then you don't want to swing and all of a
- 2:37Speaker 4: sudden you swing.
- 2:38Speaker 3: That's a that's an interesting conversation. I was talking about
- 2:40Speaker 3: that with a few guys. I feel like early in
- 2:42Speaker 3: camp I've done both, like I've done you know in
- 2:44Speaker 3: years past, I've done. Hey, I'm going to see a
- 2:46Speaker 3: pitch every single time, no matter what, for as long
- 2:48Speaker 3: as I can and then but I also feel like
- 2:50Speaker 3: I get more calibrated by swinging, and you know, even
- 2:53Speaker 3: if that, you know, by being a little bit more
- 2:54Speaker 3: aggressive and seeing kind of where my misses are.
- 2:57Speaker 2: You know, So I think, you know, i'd say definitely
- 3:01Speaker 2: someone who likes to swing.
- 3:03Speaker 6: How do you get besides like being able to mitigate
- 3:06Speaker 6: your exertion in spring training, how do you get ready
- 3:10Speaker 6: for all one sixty two plus October that you didn't
- 3:15Speaker 6: get ready or you weren't prepared or told how to
- 3:18Speaker 6: get ready before.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's something I'm still still learning about.
- 3:23Speaker 5: You know.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Last year was my first full year in the major leagues,
- 3:27Speaker 3: and so you know, I guess you know, part of
- 3:30Speaker 3: I actually, you know, I would take it to you guys.
- 3:32Speaker 2: What were some things that you guys learned during your career?
- 3:34Speaker 2: Because you guys were.
- 3:36Speaker 4: Hit all off season, so that helped. Yeah, so you
- 3:40Speaker 4: don't seem like you're gonna pull that one off. No,
- 3:42Speaker 4: that's that's not that's not yeah, that's not me. But
- 3:45Speaker 4: I still figuring it out.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I think, you know, just getting better at I think
- 3:50Speaker 3: quality reps, you know, you know, quality over quantity, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and and like I said, uh, you know, making sure that,
- 3:57Speaker 3: you know, if if something's not exactly where I want
- 3:59Speaker 3: to be at, if I'm not feeling my best you
- 4:01Speaker 3: know today, it's you know, rather than trying to you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: uh take three steps in one day, being okay with
- 4:07Speaker 3: taking you know, one small step at a time.
- 4:08Speaker 4: Well, like I think it was Magley, we're doing is
- 4:10Speaker 4: or Carlos City when when the White Sox. I when
- 4:13Speaker 4: I got to the White Sox, they told me they
- 4:15Speaker 4: would say this. If they felt good, they would swing extra,
- 4:17Speaker 4: and they felt bad, they just stopped swinging that day.
- 4:20Speaker 4: They'd be like, you know what, instead of trying to
- 4:22Speaker 4: hit a thousand balls and swing your way out of it,
- 4:25Speaker 4: they said, hey, I feel like crap today. I'm just
- 4:27Speaker 4: gonna go play the game and go from there and
- 4:28Speaker 4: not try to work on it. And then if they
- 4:30Speaker 4: felt good, they'd take a little extra because they wanted
- 4:32Speaker 4: to get the good feeling locked in.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that actually makes a ton of sense to me.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I think there's you know, because when you're not feeling good,
- 4:38Speaker 3: you not only you're probably thinking more and fatiguing yourself more.
- 4:41Speaker 3: And so I know, how often you know one of
- 4:43Speaker 3: those days that are that are just that happen that
- 4:45Speaker 3: are bad days? Do you really, you know, move the needle.
- 4:47Speaker 3: I think that's a great point. So I'm gonna probably
- 4:49Speaker 3: like take from them a little bit.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Just give me credit.
- 4:51Speaker 3: I will give somebody ask Yeah, yeah, hit fifty this year,
- 4:54Speaker 3: drove in one hundred and forty.
- 4:55Speaker 4: What happened last conversation? Yeah, look that was on foul
- 4:57Speaker 4: territory that I really told me.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I love it.
- 5:01Speaker 6: Everybody everybody wants to do better. Do you think you're
- 5:04Speaker 6: just gonna do better because you're going to play in
- 5:06Speaker 6: one hundred and sixty two games, you'll stay healthy? Or
- 5:09Speaker 6: do you see yourself taking a next step? I know
- 5:13Speaker 6: that's crazy to say to a lot of fans, but
- 5:15Speaker 6: when I watch you play, I feel like there's still
- 5:18Speaker 6: low hanging fruit that you can improve on. A season
- 5:21Speaker 6: where you had over a nine hundred ops, you were
- 5:24Speaker 6: an All Star, you did so many things. But do
- 5:26Speaker 6: you see areas where you can improve where you like,
- 5:29Speaker 6: I'm good? You know I'll hang around right where I'm at.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think one hundred percent I still
- 5:35Speaker 2: have room to improve. I think, you know.
- 5:37Speaker 3: The last thing I also want to say is like, uh,
- 5:40Speaker 3: you know that just because I had this.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Amazing year last year.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Just low, I just show up and it's going to
- 5:44Speaker 3: automatically happen again, you know, I know, you know, being
- 5:48Speaker 3: a guy who's not far removed from getting my butt
- 5:51Speaker 3: kicked at the major league level night in the night out,
- 5:53Speaker 3: you know, it's you know, I know, it's how much
- 5:55Speaker 3: it takes, you know, day in and day out to
- 5:57Speaker 3: to have success.
- 5:58Speaker 2: At this level.
- 5:58Speaker 3: And so but as far as like areas to improve,
- 6:01Speaker 3: I think just the quality of that bat continued to
- 6:03Speaker 3: get better and better as the year went on, being
- 6:05Speaker 3: smarter about situations, how teams were attacking me, and and
- 6:09Speaker 3: picking and choosing spots where where you know, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 3: maybe my focus was more hey like you know, try
- 6:15Speaker 3: to just take a good at bat and pass to
- 6:16Speaker 3: the next guy when when they were less aggressive to me,
- 6:19Speaker 3: or or you know, getting better at picking and choosing.
- 6:21Speaker 2: My spots, uh to to take take a chance on
- 6:23Speaker 2: a pitch.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Any extension talks, I know there was there was rumors
- 6:27Speaker 4: of some this offseason. Have they approached reapproached you about that?
- 6:31Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 6:31Speaker 2: Nothing, nothing since some of the ones that took place,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, uh, you know, I I love it here.
- 6:35Speaker 3: You know, it's it's something that I'm definitely open to discussing.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And you know, but that being said, just you know,
- 6:42Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you the unfortunate.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Major in Stanford communications, So you're not a math major.
- 6:47Speaker 2: Not not a math math.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Math wasn't my wasn't my exceptional subject, unfortunately. But uh no,
- 6:54Speaker 3: I I'd love to do something and I'm very interested
- 6:56Speaker 3: in doing it. But at the same time, you know,
- 6:59Speaker 3: just trying to you know, like I said, it takes
- 7:01Speaker 3: a lot to try to have success at this level
- 7:03Speaker 3: and just trying to you know, think about it, and
- 7:04Speaker 3: that's signed like a ten year, four hundred million dollars deal.
- 7:07Speaker 3: How much stress is off your table?
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that would be nice.
- 7:15Speaker 5: But there is something to that.
- 7:16Speaker 6: There is something to the stress of trying to get
- 7:18Speaker 6: an extension. Some people are like, oh, who cares if
- 7:21Speaker 6: it's stress, you know, it's a lot of money. But
- 7:24Speaker 6: then there's also something to the idea of what you
- 7:27Speaker 6: were just saying, like being able to say, Okay, I'm
- 7:30Speaker 6: locked in. And I've seen guys have great years and
- 7:33Speaker 6: then after they were locked into an extension. Do you
- 7:37Speaker 6: feel that or do you see that in other players?
- 7:40Speaker 3: You know, I think how I look at it is
- 7:42Speaker 3: whether it's stat's money, you know, whatever it is. You know,
- 7:46Speaker 3: I think that stuff is a is a byproduct, right,
- 7:49Speaker 3: and you know, the last thing I want to do,
- 7:51Speaker 3: you know, is try to go. You know, I feel
- 7:55Speaker 3: like I have to have something or that I need
- 7:57Speaker 3: to be an all star or that I need to go,
- 7:59Speaker 3: you know, be the certain guy, you know, and and
- 8:02Speaker 3: skip all the steps and stuff that it takes to
- 8:04Speaker 3: get there. You know, I think, you know, for me,
- 8:07Speaker 3: what I really pride myself in is is how I
- 8:10Speaker 3: carry myself, how I treat people in the clubhouse, you know,
- 8:13Speaker 3: my work ethic, my mental routine, all that stuff and
- 8:17Speaker 3: whatever comes after that, you know, that's all. It's all gravy.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And you know, for me, there's this thing that I love.
- 8:23Speaker 3: I got it from a Cliffs and Strengths Finder coach
- 8:26Speaker 3: I talked to. It's called the the B do have,
- 8:29Speaker 3: you know, and we get it backwards. We act like
- 8:31Speaker 3: that we need to have something, and what we have
- 8:33Speaker 3: influences our you know, our actions, and then once we
- 8:36Speaker 3: act certainly, then we then we can, uh you know,
- 8:38Speaker 3: be that person you know, and and so I want
- 8:40Speaker 3: to be that the person you know. First you know,
- 8:43Speaker 3: for me, it starts with, you know, being a good husband, uh,
- 8:46Speaker 3: you know, being a good father. You know, when I
- 8:48Speaker 3: go home from the field, and you know, if I
- 8:49Speaker 3: can choose to be that guy, you know, be the
- 8:51Speaker 3: be a good teammate, work hard, all that stuff, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 3: then that influences, you know, what I do, and then
- 8:56Speaker 3: I think.
- 8:57Speaker 2: What I get from there is the byproduct of that.
- 9:00Speaker 6: How many times last year, just in the All Star
- 9:03Speaker 6: weekend did you think, man, I thought this was going
- 9:06Speaker 6: to happen in an Orange uniform. I thought this was
- 9:08Speaker 6: going to happen as an oriole Not saying you were
- 9:11Speaker 6: vindictive or hateful or anything like that, but how many
- 9:15Speaker 6: times during just that weekend, not during the season. What
- 9:18Speaker 6: did that thought come into your head?
- 9:22Speaker 2: You know, I think that's something the hindsight, I've thought
- 9:24Speaker 2: about a lot.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Actually, you know, I think what was super cool about
- 9:28Speaker 3: you know, I was when I got traded.
- 9:30Speaker 2: I wanted the trade to happen.
- 9:32Speaker 3: But at the same time, you know, it's very sad
- 9:34Speaker 3: to be leaving the group of guys that I was with.
- 9:36Speaker 3: And even now, I can, you know, still visualize what
- 9:39Speaker 3: that would have looked like. You know, you know, I
- 9:41Speaker 3: could visualize the world in which, you know, I was
- 9:43Speaker 3: an everyday player with the Orioles, with with those group
- 9:45Speaker 3: of guys, and I think, you know, with the chance
- 9:47Speaker 3: you know, stepping out into you know, outside of my
- 9:49Speaker 3: comfort zone into a new organization, you know, with a
- 9:52Speaker 3: with a new group of guys, I think that actually
- 9:54Speaker 3: allowed me to grow into you know, even more right.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And I think that was what was so cool about,
- 9:59Speaker 3: you know, everything that happened in Miami last year for
- 10:01Speaker 3: me was I think it actually you know, brought out
- 10:04Speaker 3: more of myself than maybe I might have had in Baltimore.
- 10:08Speaker 7: Hey, I have one more for you. I don't think
- 10:10Speaker 7: we had you after this happened.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So how did you reflect on the All Star Game
- 10:16Speaker 1: experience and the history that you made. We never saw
- 10:18Speaker 1: the swing off before it ended up being super fun.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So when you were able to kind of reflect, take
- 10:24Speaker 1: a second, can you take us through any of the
- 10:26Speaker 1: inner workings there of how that all went down and
- 10:28Speaker 1: how that, you know, just gives you even more of
- 10:30Speaker 1: a boost from the year that you had.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I was so terrified when they told me I
- 10:35Speaker 3: was going to be doing that. What I was you know,
- 10:38Speaker 3: I'm a guy, you know, fear of failure, performing anxiety
- 10:42Speaker 3: some I worked through a lot, but uh, you know
- 10:44Speaker 3: when they I you know, I like, I'm the guy,
- 10:47Speaker 3: you know, the day before I see our schedule, like
- 10:48Speaker 3: to visualize my day, plan it out, all that stuff.
- 10:50Speaker 2: And so when they told me that all of a sudden,
- 10:52Speaker 2: I was so nervous. And then but then the.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Coolest thing was, you know, was after it happened, I
- 10:57Speaker 3: was just so grateful that I got the chance to
- 10:59Speaker 3: be a part of that. And once, you know, once
- 11:01Speaker 3: I got in the box, you know, just as like
- 11:02Speaker 3: when we when we play, you know, you you turn
- 11:04Speaker 3: a snap into competitive mode and try to simplify things
- 11:07Speaker 3: and not get worried about, you know, any of the
- 11:10Speaker 3: you know what ifs and all that stuff. And it
- 11:12Speaker 3: was nice because I actually struck out twice in the game,
- 11:15Speaker 3: so the talkaway experience with my family was all about
- 11:18Speaker 3: to swing off.
- 11:19Speaker 2: So that was that was nice.
- 11:21Speaker 4: If we're beating shoreb anyways, So.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, thankfully he was on my teams.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exactly, you got to walk away with the
- 11:29Speaker 4: w exactly. Yeah, that was really a common thread here
- 11:34Speaker 4: he went to Stanford. I mentioned it every Stanford guy
- 11:36Speaker 4: ever played with I don't know about your crash. Overthinks
- 11:39Speaker 4: over smart, tells me how smart they are. Oh, I
- 11:42Speaker 4: went to Stanford. It's like, I don't understand what's so Stanford.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Soone was turned down Stanford. We all don't have to
- 11:49Speaker 4: go to Stanford.
- 11:50Speaker 7: He did, he did.
- 11:52Speaker 1: Hinch tried to recruit him over at Stanford A J.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Hinch and presents.
- 11:56Speaker 5: He said, no, I'm going here.
- 11:58Speaker 4: Big leagues, No, they don't know what happened is Pinch
- 12:01Speaker 4: was there? Yeah, Niner Yep. Calls me like, hey, I
- 12:04Speaker 4: want you to come out for a visit. I'm like, well,
- 12:06Speaker 4: isn't Hinch like your freshman All American?
- 12:08Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 12:08Speaker 4: But you can date you Mike. I'm good. D thank
- 12:12Speaker 4: you though, I'm good. No, thank you, I'm good. Yeah.
- 12:15Speaker 1: It worked out for everyone. Same with you, Kyle. Awesome
- 12:18Speaker 1: to have you back on. Appreciate the time, have fun
- 12:21Speaker 1: the rest of spring. We'll catch you during the season.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you, guys, I appreciate it. Always a pleasure.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Comes Marlins reliever Tyler Phillips, joining us right now on FT. Tyler,
- 12:35Speaker 1: great to talk to you, and before we start talking
- 12:37Speaker 1: about the twenty twenty six season, we did have you
- 12:39Speaker 1: once last year. Wanted to say hello and also congrats
- 12:43Speaker 1: on a great twenty twenty five. You really grinded to
- 12:46Speaker 1: get yourself to this spot. So did you do some
- 12:49Speaker 1: reflecting this offseason? Have a lot of fun with what
- 12:52Speaker 1: you just accomplished.
- 12:54Speaker 8: Yeah, well I appreciate you guys and what's up again?
- 12:57Speaker 5: But yeah, I see, not much time to reflect. Gotta
- 13:01Speaker 5: got a.
- 13:01Speaker 8: Six month gold now, so kind of trying to support
- 13:05Speaker 8: mom however I can. But no, it was awesome, and uh,
- 13:07Speaker 8: it's definitely a grind of a season just learning how
- 13:10Speaker 8: to be a reliever. But uh, I mean I've been
- 13:14Speaker 8: big on just letting go of what I did and
- 13:17Speaker 8: just trying to look onto the next the next year.
- 13:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:20Speaker 4: By the way, I just wanted to say this. I
- 13:22Speaker 4: know he's I guess New Jersey, but he's kind of
- 13:25Speaker 4: you're close.
- 13:25Speaker 5: To Philly, right, Yeah, yeah, South Jersey.
- 13:27Speaker 4: He's got the definitely the Jersey look going dude like
- 13:30Speaker 4: cut off sleeves.
- 13:33Speaker 5: Look at that, stay relaxed that. I mean, look at that.
- 13:36Speaker 5: There we go, there we go.
- 13:37Speaker 4: I mean, in the wonder Craps and Scott love you.
- 13:39Speaker 4: They're like Philly's fan growing up. I mean total Jersey guy.
- 13:44Speaker 5: I mean, Cainelee's here.
- 13:45Speaker 4: Next thing, you know, we'll have Canelee over here talking
- 13:47Speaker 4: about you know, Jersey, Yo, Philly.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Yeah, I was too young to be on that scene.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Man.
- 13:53Speaker 5: I just stuck around baseball.
- 13:54Speaker 8: But now in Miami, man, I gotta show some gotta
- 13:57Speaker 8: show some personality. You know, it's cool you have a kid,
- 14:00Speaker 8: Now stay away from I know, I know, I uh,
- 14:02Speaker 8: my wife would be upset if.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I was anywhere near there. This clinch, let's clench a
- 14:07Speaker 5: spot and then then we can convince her.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely, absolutely. So what are you looking forward to
- 14:12Speaker 4: this year with.
- 14:13Speaker 8: The Carleans dude? I mean, just being around those guys
- 14:16Speaker 8: was such a blast. Like you guys said, it was
- 14:19Speaker 8: kind of a grind throughout my career.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Uh.
- 14:21Speaker 8: You know, I was like nine years in the minor
- 14:23Speaker 8: leagues and then you know, I went to Philly. God,
- 14:26Speaker 8: I love those guys like, I had so much respect
- 14:28Speaker 8: for them, but it was hard for me to fit in.
- 14:31Speaker 8: Just as a rookie. I was being timid and I
- 14:34Speaker 8: was trying to take it all in like everyone said.
- 14:36Speaker 8: But I was letting that leak into my performance. And
- 14:39Speaker 8: once I got over here, I thought it was just
- 14:41Speaker 8: gonna be the weird new guy. Everybody there was a
- 14:43Speaker 8: weird new guy. You know, everyone was a rookie. All
- 14:46Speaker 8: the coaching staff was like their first year. Uh So
- 14:48Speaker 8: I'm just I'm just excited to go into battle with
- 14:50Speaker 8: these guys again. Like I think we do a good
- 14:52Speaker 8: job of of playing for each other, not making it
- 14:55Speaker 8: very selfish bullpen.
- 14:58Speaker 5: I'm super excited for that. You know.
- 14:59Speaker 8: Obviously the addition of Pete we got, John King, we
- 15:01Speaker 8: got they were both in Texas with me, so we
- 15:04Speaker 8: got the Texas Marlins coming around, Brandon Mann also Texas,
- 15:07Speaker 8: Ryan Riquez Texas. So now I'm just excited to just
- 15:11Speaker 8: get into compete moe with these guys again and uh
- 15:14Speaker 8: just get after it, try to make a name for ourselves.
- 15:17Speaker 6: Do you regret not being you when you first got
- 15:19Speaker 6: called up? Because I know what it's like to wait
- 15:22Speaker 6: a long time in the minor leagues and then you
- 15:24Speaker 6: get to the big leagues and you're like, I'm older
- 15:26Speaker 6: than a lot of these guys, but I need to
- 15:28Speaker 6: be a rookie. Like everybody says you're a rookie. Do
- 15:31Speaker 6: you regret that?
- 15:33Speaker 5: Yeah? Man, that's the thing, Like I just I didn't
- 15:35Speaker 5: know what to expect.
- 15:36Speaker 8: Like I think from so many years in the minor leagues,
- 15:41Speaker 8: I just like like I knew that I saw myself
- 15:43Speaker 8: as a big leaguer. I knew that I belonged there,
- 15:45Speaker 8: but once I got there, I wanted to be that
- 15:47Speaker 8: good rookie. So I was just creating extra jobs for myself.
- 15:53Speaker 8: We're at the end of the day, like, you know,
- 15:55Speaker 8: like these guys aren't going to be upset with me
- 15:57Speaker 8: if I'm showing my colors as long as I'm performing,
- 16:00Speaker 8: as long as I'm doing the right thing, like obviously
- 16:02Speaker 8: don't be like out of like just completely obnoxious, like
- 16:06Speaker 8: guys are still trying to do their jobs. But yeah, man,
- 16:09Speaker 8: I wish I wish I kept that fire, Like I
- 16:12Speaker 8: was scared to show it on the field. I was
- 16:14Speaker 8: scared to show guys up, you know, Like I remember
- 16:17Speaker 8: specifically facing like Freddie Freeman, like probably the hardest at
- 16:21Speaker 8: out that I'll have, but uh, I didn't want to
- 16:24Speaker 8: like stare him down or I didn't want to be
- 16:27Speaker 8: the bulldog mentality I had on the mound because I
- 16:29Speaker 8: was like, oh what if I what if I upset
- 16:30Speaker 8: this guy?
- 16:31Speaker 5: You know, like at the end of the day, if
- 16:33Speaker 5: I do what I'm gonna do.
- 16:34Speaker 8: I think I'll get more respect out of him than
- 16:36Speaker 8: if I was to go in there being timid and
- 16:37Speaker 8: have a four pitch walk, you know. Uh so, yeah,
- 16:41Speaker 8: I do regret it. I wish, I wish that I
- 16:42Speaker 8: kept that bulldog mentality. But you know, everything happens for
- 16:45Speaker 8: a reason, and and here we are now, and I
- 16:49Speaker 8: learned a lot from that, from that year of being
- 16:52Speaker 8: that little kid. So now now we're here.
- 16:54Speaker 4: Is that why you didn't slap yourself when you're in Philly?
- 16:56Speaker 4: I mean you could have got Price or Schwobur or
- 16:58Speaker 4: somebody to smack.
- 16:59Speaker 8: Tim I did some other stuff in Philly that you know,
- 17:02Speaker 8: those guys know about it. I can't share that on
- 17:05Speaker 8: the air, but dude, honestly, I just slapped myself as
- 17:07Speaker 8: I got mad warming up one day, like if my
- 17:10Speaker 8: stuff felt like it's my thing, now like it, but
- 17:13Speaker 8: like there's science behind while I do it. Like I said,
- 17:17Speaker 8: I give up like four runs the two outages prior
- 17:20Speaker 8: they throw it right back in the fire.
- 17:21Speaker 5: That's how it is.
- 17:21Speaker 8: And dude, it was like eighty It felt like I
- 17:25Speaker 8: wasn't spending the ball. I just stepped off the Mountain,
- 17:28Speaker 8: grinding my teeth. It was like nobody at this game.
- 17:31Speaker 8: I just said, I'm just gonna punish myself, and I
- 17:33Speaker 8: hit myself and I went out there. Velocity jumped, the
- 17:36Speaker 8: spin was spinning. So like we're doing this from now on. Uh,
- 17:40Speaker 8: this time training game, I'm doing it in spring games,
- 17:43Speaker 8: so before you take them mount and.
- 17:46Speaker 5: Yeah, I've been doing it.
- 17:47Speaker 4: It's like fight Club. We don't talk about Fight Club.
- 17:50Speaker 5: A little bit. I think I love that movie. But no, man'.
- 17:55Speaker 4: You're Edward Norton.
- 17:57Speaker 5: I gotta I gotta get sorry. If you haven't seen
- 17:59Speaker 5: Fight Club for you know, you have to see that movie.
- 18:02Speaker 5: He's it's it's good.
- 18:04Speaker 8: Tyler Durden, Yeah, Tyler Diurton, Dude, what an unbelievable alter
- 18:08Speaker 8: ego that would be you. You got to get some
- 18:12Speaker 8: like mesh shirts, right, just like this one cut off
- 18:15Speaker 8: mesh shirt to gum have the shape makes I don't
- 18:17Speaker 8: have the hair for it. Make soap, but uh make
- 18:20Speaker 8: soap for sure. No, But honestly, like my the reason
- 18:24Speaker 8: that I do do it is, yes, I was upset,
- 18:28Speaker 8: but I I started understanding why it was working for me.
- 18:32Speaker 5: There was nerves going in the games. You got a
- 18:34Speaker 5: lot of it.
- 18:34Speaker 8: There's an adrenaline spike when your name is called. You
- 18:36Speaker 8: don't always know like you're prepared, but you know the starter.
- 18:40Speaker 8: Let's say Sandy set the tone. He just went seven innings, right.
- 18:43Speaker 8: I don't want to be the guy to like ruin
- 18:45Speaker 8: that outing for him. So as your first year out
- 18:47Speaker 8: of the bullpen, especially you're sitting there, there's thoughts that
- 18:49Speaker 8: creep in. There's demons, you know, like you're really good guys.
- 18:53Speaker 8: They're really good because they don't have those thoughts.
- 18:55Speaker 5: What do they do? And they know how to get
- 18:56Speaker 5: rid of them. That's my way of doing it.
- 18:59Speaker 8: Like I I cross that line, Well, the second they
- 19:01Speaker 8: call my name, I'm grinding my teeth.
- 19:03Speaker 5: I'm making up lives. What the hitter say about my family,
- 19:05Speaker 5: about my wife, and.
- 19:07Speaker 8: I'm just pissed off, just pacing back and forth on
- 19:10Speaker 8: the mound out there, just trying to look tougher than
- 19:12Speaker 8: I actually am.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I mean, look at me, but uh, once I.
- 19:16Speaker 8: Crossed that that gate and I hit myself, I just
- 19:19Speaker 8: got punched in the mouth by whoever. And there's fight
- 19:23Speaker 8: or flight there. I wasn't raised to run away from stuff.
- 19:27Speaker 8: There's no retreating back to that bullpen. So I hit myself.
- 19:30Speaker 8: It's time to go, It's time to fight. That's my
- 19:32Speaker 8: my alter eg you know, like like a Jesus is
- 19:35Speaker 8: Ardo's he's got his song glasses. That's his alter ego.
- 19:38Speaker 8: That's my way of flipping the switch. And uh, you
- 19:40Speaker 8: know we talked about burning the boat. It's like, I
- 19:42Speaker 8: hit myself. I'm burning my boats back there. I can't
- 19:44Speaker 8: run back. It's time to go into battle. So it
- 19:46Speaker 8: works for me, and I love it. I'm not going
- 19:48Speaker 8: to stop.
- 19:49Speaker 6: Everybody sees you do that, it becomes viral. Everybody sees
- 19:53Speaker 6: you out in the mound. Postgame interviews are like Jonathan
- 19:57Speaker 6: Papelbon esque where you're saying like words and we just
- 19:59Speaker 6: don't even like nothing's really coherent because you're in a
- 20:03Speaker 6: different zone. You've explained that, well, how long does that
- 20:06Speaker 6: take for you to come down from? This is something
- 20:08Speaker 6: that play People that never played don't understand. It just
- 20:12Speaker 6: doesn't turn off. So how long does that take you?
- 20:16Speaker 5: Yeah? Man, I mean I think it depends on the outing.
- 20:19Speaker 8: Like the one interview, I was, I was mad man,
- 20:22Speaker 8: like I do like thirty five pitches a day before,
- 20:26Speaker 8: you know, I was groomed as a starter, I want
- 20:28Speaker 8: to go nine innings every time, even like as a reliever.
- 20:31Speaker 8: My mentality is like you are prying this ball out
- 20:33Speaker 8: of my hand, like I'm gonna go nine if you
- 20:35Speaker 8: asked me to go nine.
- 20:36Speaker 5: If it goes into extras. To be honest, it takes
- 20:40Speaker 5: a while.
- 20:40Speaker 8: We're going through our post game like talks that we
- 20:43Speaker 8: have and I'm still in there fuming. Man and guys
- 20:47Speaker 8: just kind of leave it alone. And then usually when
- 20:49Speaker 8: I'm done lifting, if I had a lift that day,
- 20:52Speaker 8: it's gone. Or you know, I got my good friend
- 20:55Speaker 8: Lake Baker, he shows up, he's he's got a good
- 20:58Speaker 8: way of calming me down. So but now I think
- 21:02Speaker 8: once we get inside, we go through the team meeting,
- 21:04Speaker 8: whatever it is, the post game.
- 21:08Speaker 5: Kind of kind of cool down. I like the game too.
- 21:11Speaker 8: I stay up late and I go back into compete mode.
- 21:15Speaker 8: I'd say after the lift though, maybe two hours.
- 21:19Speaker 6: Do you ever watch do you ever watch other dudes
- 21:21Speaker 6: throw and get just as amped. What made me think
- 21:24Speaker 6: of the question was, you know, I talked to some
- 21:26Speaker 6: relievers during the postseason that weren't that weren't pitching in
- 21:30Speaker 6: the postseason. They were already at home and they were
- 21:33Speaker 6: watching dudes come in and do what those guys did
- 21:36Speaker 6: for their team, going four or five. Do you ever
- 21:38Speaker 6: get pumped or do you ever get like, like almost
- 21:41Speaker 6: jealous that you're like, I'm not. I would love to
- 21:44Speaker 6: be in that situation when you watch those guys.
- 21:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 21:47Speaker 8: No, I mean I went to this. I was still
- 21:50Speaker 8: a minor league at the time. I went to a
- 21:51Speaker 8: Phillies playoff game. I showed them on like the sixth inning,
- 21:55Speaker 8: and my blood was was going, man like I was.
- 21:58Speaker 8: I felt like the hairs on my next and up
- 22:00Speaker 8: I was. I want those big situations.
- 22:04Speaker 5: I get. I get excited watching guys throw.
- 22:06Speaker 8: I've been watching Paddock throw and work on some pitches
- 22:08Speaker 8: and I'm just again, hairs are standing up. I'm like, God,
- 22:11Speaker 8: I want to I want to start throwing right now,
- 22:12Speaker 8: like I want to get out there.
- 22:14Speaker 7: Uh.
- 22:14Speaker 8: But yeah, watching those those huge innings, it was, Yeah,
- 22:17Speaker 8: I'm jealous. Like I it was hard for me to
- 22:20Speaker 8: watch some playoff games. My wife wanted to watch them, uh,
- 22:24Speaker 8: and I just couldn't do it because I'm just I'm
- 22:26Speaker 8: sitting there like just itching to get out there.
- 22:27Speaker 4: You know, you have a skit like Paddock. You know,
- 22:31Speaker 4: he has a skit where he comes in like a cowboy,
- 22:33Speaker 4: pitches the day he comes.
- 22:34Speaker 5: To I love it.
- 22:36Speaker 8: He does it right now, he says, he's keeping it
- 22:38Speaker 8: low key. If I was a starter, I would think
- 22:42Speaker 8: about it. But I mean, you have your thing. I
- 22:44Speaker 8: have my thing, believer, But you can't do that when
- 22:46Speaker 8: you're a starter coming in because you have to last
- 22:48Speaker 8: for a long time, right, did it? Every inning the
- 22:51Speaker 8: game get sore? The game I started against the Philly
- 22:53Speaker 8: is like when I started getting tired in the second
- 22:56Speaker 8: in the second, in second after the in between the
- 23:00Speaker 8: second inning, in the third inning, I hit myself again,
- 23:02Speaker 8: like pitching moscows. He's talking to me about like, hey,
- 23:06Speaker 8: you got these guys coming up, and I'm just not listening.
- 23:08Speaker 8: I'm just staring at the ground. Legs bounce and I'm
- 23:10Speaker 8: just hitting myself. Yeah, I got some issues, but yeah, no,
- 23:15Speaker 8: I love Paddocks thing. Man. Yeah I get But to
- 23:18Speaker 8: answer that question, I do get jealous, like I want
- 23:21Speaker 8: that big stuff, like I want those big outings. It's
- 23:24Speaker 8: the adrenaline. It's it's such a drug, man, And there's
- 23:28Speaker 8: no better feeling.
- 23:29Speaker 6: That, right, Relievers or starters going to the bullpen is
- 23:34Speaker 6: maybe one of my most fond memories of being a
- 23:37Speaker 6: backup catcher that didn't play, just sitting in the bullpen
- 23:39Speaker 6: and watching starters go down to the bullpen and like
- 23:43Speaker 6: fidget and then all of a sudden you hear.
- 23:46Speaker 5: Lu lu lulu lu lulu, and they're like, it's probably me.
- 23:50Speaker 5: I'm probably the one going into the get like relax.
- 23:53Speaker 6: How much of a transition or how much did you
- 23:56Speaker 6: get made fun of or were you like you have
- 23:58Speaker 6: any moments where you were like in the bullpen going
- 24:01Speaker 6: like starting pitchers even start yelling at like the fans
- 24:04Speaker 6: because they've never been down in the bullpen.
- 24:06Speaker 2: It's like, oh, relax, relax.
- 24:09Speaker 6: And sixty two days.
- 24:12Speaker 8: I think it took me two weeks to transition from
- 24:14Speaker 8: that from that role. You know, I had the iPad,
- 24:18Speaker 8: I was, I had the notes, the iPad, I was
- 24:20Speaker 8: reading everything. You can't do that for one sixty two Man,
- 24:24Speaker 8: you're gonna you're gonna fry yourself. You're gonna burn yourself out.
- 24:28Speaker 8: So once I got tired after that two week mark,
- 24:31Speaker 8: I just put the iPad down. I said, dude, whatever
- 24:33Speaker 8: if I get hit, I get hit. Uh, now you
- 24:36Speaker 8: throw your best stuff. But dude, I'm yelling at fans
- 24:39Speaker 8: all the time. So again, stuff I can't say on air.
- 24:42Speaker 8: But you know, like if you're an enemy territory, people
- 24:45Speaker 8: people want to get give you their give you a
- 24:47Speaker 8: piece of their mind.
- 24:48Speaker 5: I give it right back.
- 24:49Speaker 8: I don't think they probably should say that, but I
- 24:52Speaker 8: don't think they expect you to say anything back. So
- 24:54Speaker 8: I just I just let it rip and they just
- 24:56Speaker 8: usually they usually just stop, you know, like it catches
- 24:59Speaker 8: them so off hard. But yeah, like I think, uh,
- 25:03Speaker 8: let's say, like Jansen Junk and like Bozo, their routines, man,
- 25:07Speaker 8: they were doing everything.
- 25:09Speaker 5: I didn't do a thing.
- 25:10Speaker 8: I just stopped doing everything like I would do my
- 25:12Speaker 8: basic little couple of eye wash, hip flexor stretches, do
- 25:16Speaker 8: a couple of bands. I realized that once that phone rings,
- 25:20Speaker 8: Like I said that adrenaline, it's a powerful drug, man,
- 25:22Speaker 8: Like it hits and you don't need a warm up.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Like obviously you're you're doing your stuff throughout the day,
- 25:28Speaker 8: like you take care of your body the right way.
- 25:29Speaker 8: We're professionals. But once you're out there, you're out there, like.
- 25:33Speaker 4: You when you sit in the bullpen, you seem like
- 25:35Speaker 4: someone that might get a little bored at times sitting
- 25:37Speaker 4: in the bullpen. Are you a seed flicker?
- 25:40Speaker 5: Are you a Yeah?
- 25:42Speaker 4: I was the ILF occupied for the first five let's
- 25:45Speaker 4: say five.
- 25:46Speaker 5: Innings, well, the first three innings, I was the would
- 25:48Speaker 5: you rather guy?
- 25:49Speaker 4: Uh? And are you are you picking like the wood?
- 25:51Speaker 4: You rathers?
- 25:52Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 25:52Speaker 4: Yeah, you're the dirty mine in the bull coming up there.
- 25:55Speaker 4: The most disgusting things you can think.
- 25:56Speaker 8: Of, pretty dirty yeah, against stuff. I can't share some
- 25:59Speaker 8: some pretty like stuff. It's just like, what are you
- 26:01Speaker 8: thinking about?
- 26:01Speaker 7: Matt.
- 26:02Speaker 8: There's somewhere guys just had to walk away, and I'm
- 26:04Speaker 8: just up there thinking of an answer for myself. We've
- 26:07Speaker 8: had the Mountain Valley bottles where where we've tried to
- 26:10Speaker 8: like shoot a seet into it. You know, it was
- 26:13Speaker 8: pretty fun that last ye about an ending before you
- 26:16Speaker 8: get tired of it. And then we usually just go
- 26:18Speaker 8: down and start making fun of of Beman, our bullpen coach,
- 26:21Speaker 8: you know, like we got this this joke in Arizona.
- 26:25Speaker 5: There's a water slide. It's the builtmore. Yeah. We just
- 26:28Speaker 5: always just we give him a bunch of crailid.
- 26:31Speaker 8: I didn't think I don't think he did it, but
- 26:34Speaker 8: I just he always felt he kept talking about it,
- 26:36Speaker 8: so I just I keep that joke going to this
- 26:38Speaker 8: day and we just try to get under his skin.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Uh.
- 26:41Speaker 8: And then at the end of the day, like I said,
- 26:42Speaker 8: I just I just go with the fans. You know, Miami,
- 26:47Speaker 8: we got that glass there too behind our bullpen, and
- 26:49Speaker 8: they got.
- 26:50Speaker 5: Like a bar.
- 26:50Speaker 4: So sometimes I think at the end of you then
- 26:53Speaker 4: they switched the bullpens at one time, because I probably
- 26:55Speaker 4: do know that they put the visitors over there. I
- 26:57Speaker 4: heard it was the home was on the other side.
- 26:59Speaker 4: I heard it was crazy like borderline, no clothes back there.
- 27:02Speaker 4: You know it's Miami.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Yeah, it used to be.
- 27:05Speaker 4: I remember warming up the pitcher and there would be
- 27:07Speaker 4: people back there, and you are like, yeah, well give
- 27:13Speaker 4: them for me, brown and give the old rubbing up
- 27:17Speaker 4: the ball look.
- 27:18Speaker 5: For me, don't worry, Uh.
- 27:19Speaker 8: To my wife, I was watching the baseball games on
- 27:22Speaker 8: the TVs and the baw all right, and towards the
- 27:26Speaker 8: end of the season, I'm an Eagles fan, you know,
- 27:27Speaker 8: some of the Birds games were on, so I was
- 27:29Speaker 8: keeping track of that. Yeah, I mean, I just it does.
- 27:33Speaker 8: It does get a little boring. That's why you just
- 27:34Speaker 8: got to be really close with your guys, and you know,
- 27:37Speaker 8: sometimes we talk ball. Sometimes we just just make up
- 27:39Speaker 8: ridiculous scenarios and just try to have fun.
- 27:44Speaker 6: It was, wait, do they not do the I think
- 27:46Speaker 6: it was Thursdays where they would have the body paint dancing.
- 27:50Speaker 6: Do they not do that anymore? Because you guys are
- 27:54Speaker 6: now because that was the visiting bullpen because the home
- 27:57Speaker 6: team was too distracted, So they don't do that anymore
- 28:00Speaker 6: there in Miami.
- 28:01Speaker 8: Yeah, I you know, it's it's a good thing that
- 28:04Speaker 8: I got there when I did, because they were not
- 28:06Speaker 8: doing any of that. If they were doing that, I
- 28:09Speaker 8: I like, it would have been so hard to like
- 28:11Speaker 8: lock in. There's there's already so much going on, and
- 28:13Speaker 8: people just knock them the glass. You literally feel like
- 28:15Speaker 8: a zoo animal.
- 28:16Speaker 5: Uh. At that point, I would have like, what are
- 28:18Speaker 5: we doing?
- 28:21Speaker 4: It used to be when they when they switched the visitors.
- 28:23Speaker 5: I heard it. I heard you couldn't even hear the
- 28:25Speaker 5: phone ringing half the time. So you know, I think
- 28:28Speaker 5: they're they're making some some adjustments.
- 28:31Speaker 7: Someone sat there before it and said, what if we
- 28:34Speaker 7: build a night club?
- 28:35Speaker 4: Like I know, I know the people swimming in the
- 28:41Speaker 4: pool that should not be have no shirt on to
- 28:44Speaker 4: my plan that I've talked to.
- 28:46Speaker 8: I've talked to some higher up, some front like not
- 28:49Speaker 8: like baseball ops, but like stadium ops. Why what if
- 28:53Speaker 8: we named that club eleven like out there, but I
- 28:57Speaker 8: spelt it different than the Miami Club eleven, so when
- 29:00Speaker 8: people put the uber in, it actually brings them there
- 29:03Speaker 8: and we get more fans.
- 29:05Speaker 5: It's a club I haven't been to.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Oh good answer, not been there.
- 29:10Speaker 5: You've heard about heart. But what if we named it eleven?
- 29:14Speaker 5: Out there? So the uber brings them to the wrong place,
- 29:16Speaker 5: and now we have more fans. They're not who's gonna want.
- 29:18Speaker 4: To go back, you know, espectually to sell where eleven
- 29:22Speaker 4: is and we're the new eleven.
- 29:23Speaker 5: That's a long ways. They're gonna shay, you know what,
- 29:25Speaker 5: there's drinks here, we'll stay here, we'll watch a baseball game.
- 29:27Speaker 7: True, that is a brilliant, brilliant marketing idea.
- 29:33Speaker 1: The owners at eleven might be a little pissed, but
- 29:35Speaker 1: I feel like they're doing well enough that they can
- 29:37Speaker 1: handle a few people messing up their ubers and lifts
- 29:40Speaker 1: and going to the ballpark.
- 29:41Speaker 5: So I like it.
- 29:42Speaker 7: I'm all for it. We'll make sure the word gets
- 29:44Speaker 7: spread around to try and make that happen.
- 29:45Speaker 8: Right, I got, I got a lot of ridiculous takes, honestly,
- 29:49Speaker 8: twenty four to seven, So people don't really listen to
- 29:52Speaker 8: what I say.
- 29:52Speaker 5: It's hard to take me serious.
- 29:55Speaker 1: All right, Well, next time we have you on, we'll
- 29:56Speaker 1: just quiz you on like your top ten ideas, and
- 29:59Speaker 1: that'll be the conversation.
