Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Well, welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:17Today we finish first Timothy the entire letter and we're
- 0:22going to be in verses 17 through 21.
- 0:26Today, verses 17 through 21, and we're going to be looking at two
- 0:31final instructions that Paul gives to Timothy who is
- 0:35pastoring there in the church at Ephesus.
- 0:37I kind of writing some wrongs, both in false doctrine, false
- 0:41teachers, greed, people misusing church funds, needing to find
- 0:47good godly individuals that would lead their church.
- 0:50There were just 1000 different problems that were going on
- 0:53there in Ephesus. And so Timothy was instructed to
- 0:57take care of those things and if you will, to put the church back
- 1:01in order that people would know how they ought to behave in the
- 1:06family of God. And so we saw in chapter one
- 1:11that Paul encouraged Timothy to hold on to the gospel, that the
- 1:16gospel that changed and transformed Paul was the gospel
- 1:20that Timothy needed to be preaching.
- 1:22He didn't need to be going off into false teaching like many
- 1:25others had been and even focusing on men and misusing the
- 1:31Old Testament and instead of it pointing to Jesus and to the
- 1:35gospel work like Paul encouraged Timothy to do.
- 1:39Then in chapter 2, we saw instructions given for prayer
- 1:44and what we need to be praying for.
- 1:47We saw that for both men and women, there were things that
- 1:50they needed to be doing and not to be doing.
- 1:53They needed to be praying. They needed not to be arguing or
- 1:58being angry with one another. They needed to be listening and
- 2:03receiving instruction from the Word of God.
- 2:07They didn't need to be usurping authority or being like the
- 2:12false prophetesses or false priestesses that there were
- 2:17there in the temple of Diana there in Ephesus.
- 2:21Then we saw in chapter 3 that Paul gave Timothy the
- 2:25instructions. Here's what an elder, here's
- 2:28what an overseer, a pastor looks like in a church.
- 2:31Here's the characteristics that he should have, and here's the
- 2:34characteristics that a Deacon, one of the servants of the
- 2:37church, should have. Then we saw in chapter 4
- 2:41Timothy, don't go off into speculations and his
- 2:44genealogies, myths, and fables. Instead, focus on godliness, on
- 2:50our walk with the Lord. And as you take care of both
- 2:54like your your teaching and your life, you will find that it
- 2:58benefits everyone around you. Even though you're young, you
- 3:02can set an example for others. Then in chapter 5, we saw that
- 3:08there were widows and there were widows that were supposed to be
- 3:12financially supported by the church, and there were widows
- 3:14that were not supposed to be financially supported by the
- 3:16church. And so we saw the
- 3:19characteristics of both of those.
- 3:20And then we also saw the elders. And as Paul gives instructions
- 3:25to Timothy, here's what to do with elders that are doing a
- 3:28great job, that are leading and shepherding well.
- 3:32And here's what you do when elders go bad.
- 3:35Then in chapter 6, we saw here's the instructions that need to be
- 3:39given for those that right now are slaves and the way that they
- 3:44need to interact with their masters, the way that they need
- 3:48to interact with fellow Christians and how that impacts
- 3:51that. Then he said, here are those
- 3:54people that they're false teachers, they're trying to get
- 3:58get financial gain from God's people.
- 4:02He says, Timothy, don't be like those guys.
- 4:04Instead, pursue godliness, give a good confession of faith in
- 4:09Christ Jesus, even as Jesus gave a good confession in front of
- 4:13Pontius Pilot, that then we all have experienced salvation as a
- 4:17result of Jesus's testimony there.
- 4:20So then, that brings us now to the end of the book verse #17 He
- 4:25says, instruct those who are rich in the present age not to
- 4:29be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth,
- 4:33but on God who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
- 4:38Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works,
- 4:43to be generous and willing to share, storing up treasure for
- 4:47themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they
- 4:52may take hold of what is truly life.
- 4:56Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding
- 5:00irreverent and empty speech and contradictions from what is
- 5:04falsely called knowledge by professing it.
- 5:07Some people have departed from the faith.
- 5:11Grace be with you all. OK, so they're kind of two main
- 5:16aspects of what Paul ends here with.
- 5:18The first are some instructions to the rich.
- 5:21Now, just because you might not have 3 million in the bank or
- 5:25you might not have $100,000 in the bank, does not mean that we
- 5:31cannot learn something here from these instructions to those that
- 5:35are rich. If you do have some financial
- 5:39means in this world, maybe you do have $100,000 in the bank.
- 5:44These would be good instructions for you and for me to know.
- 5:50Very unfortunately, there was in the early church a deep
- 5:57revulsion for greed. I believe in America today we
- 6:04have lost that revulsion. We tend to think of money as
- 6:10being something that we need to hoard.
- 6:13Money is something that will protect us and save us.
- 6:18We resent anyone talking about our money.
- 6:23We resent perhaps anyone insinuating that we ought to be
- 6:30generous with our money, but that is the only way that the
- 6:35Bible talks about it. Like we ought to make wise
- 6:39choices with our money. But then Scripture tells us
- 6:42like, give, be generous, give to the Lord's work.
- 6:46In the Old Testament you have the the tithes that would come
- 6:50in at various points throughout the different, you know,
- 6:55festivals and offerings. You would give about 25 to 30%
- 7:00there in Israel, 20 to 30, sorry, 25 to 30% of your
- 7:07proceeds of your crops, of your harvest to the Lord.
- 7:12Now, as I've mentioned before, that also overlapped with when
- 7:16the nation of Israel was a theocracy.
- 7:20So that also included things that today we have taxes.
- 7:24Back then when God instituted the Old Testament law, they did
- 7:28not have taxes, or if you will, the tithe was the tax.
- 7:31And so there's some overlap there.
- 7:33I'm not saying, all right, you, you guys need to give 30% of all
- 7:37your money to the Tabernacle Talk fund.
- 7:40There is no Tabernacle Talk Fund, by the way.
- 7:43All of this is a free service given to you from the Lord.
- 7:49But so that all happened in the Old Testament.
- 7:53In the New Testament, God insists on us giving our entire
- 7:59lives like our hearts to the Lord and whatever he impresses
- 8:03on us to give out of like his working in our heart.
- 8:08Let's do that. If that's 10%, if that's 30%, if
- 8:12that's, I've met some people that have given 90% of their
- 8:16money to the Lord. They were fantastically well
- 8:20paid. And so they were able to live
- 8:23and exist on that small portion. But whatever God does place on
- 8:28your heart to give, give that to Him and give to others.
- 8:33So sorry, that's a general generic statement on giving.
- 8:37Let's look specifically at what these verses have to say from
- 8:41the Lord to those that are rich. He says instruct those who are
- 8:44rich in the present age not to be arrogant.
- 8:49Some people can say, well, I'm rich and so I'm going to show
- 8:54off all of my extravagant riches.
- 8:56Here's my amazing car, here's my mansion.
- 9:01Here's, you know, this extravagant trip after this
- 9:04extravagant trip. And here's this, you know, super
- 9:08fancy clothing item that I got. And here's this, you know,
- 9:13ridiculous thing that I bought for a loved one.
- 9:17It is not a sin to have nice things or to buy nice things.
- 9:22But if it comes from a place of pride.
- 9:25And frankly, that is something that while it can only be truly
- 9:30known within the heart of the individual of whether or not
- 9:34they're being proud and that they need to be reliant on the
- 9:38Holy Spirit for him to warn them about when they are finding
- 9:43their identity or worth or purpose in their finances.
- 9:48Arrogance can be seen by other people.
- 9:52And if you're constantly boasting about the things that
- 9:55you are doing that are expensive and extravagant, lavish, that I
- 10:02want to encourage you, maybe it might be that you are placing
- 10:06your identity more in your money instead of in God, or more in
- 10:11your possessions and not in your Lord.
- 10:14So he says, instruct those who are rich in the present age not
- 10:17to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of
- 10:22wealth. I'm very thankful that in this
- 10:27country we are able to have a different safety Nets for those
- 10:32that are getting older. And so things like Social
- 10:35Security or a pension or 4-O1K. But all of us know, as we've
- 10:41seen the world, especially over the last six years, and I really
- 10:45think since even 2008 showed us some different things as well,
- 10:49we cannot, if you will, bank on our future always being certain
- 10:57as a result of monetary wealth. We don't know what a stock
- 11:01market will do even on any given weekend.
- 11:05And so don't believe that your money or your investments or
- 11:10your riches will keep you safe, He says instead, set your hope
- 11:15on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
- 11:21Now notice there he says that God richly provides for us,
- 11:27richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
- 11:31If you have something that has come into your life, enjoy it.
- 11:36Something that I, even as I talk through money, so much of it is
- 11:41a heart issue that we have to wrestle through.
- 11:44Like, OK, is this a gift from God to me so that I can enjoy
- 11:50it? Wonderful.
- 11:52Is this something that I can become arrogant about?
- 11:55That this thing that was given as a good gift from God to me
- 12:00that now I've kind of twisted and I've, I've put my hope in
- 12:03it, like, oh man, God made it so that I can be secure in my final
- 12:08days as a result of this money. Praise the Lord, but I can turn
- 12:13arrogant with it. And I can be like, man, this
- 12:15other person, they just didn't plan for the future like I did.
- 12:20And we can begin to think we are the reason that our financial
- 12:25footing is secure instead of God has given me everything that I
- 12:30have. If God has given it to me, I
- 12:33need to enjoy it and I need to not be arrogant about it.
- 12:37I don't need to set my hope in it to believe that it will keep
- 12:40me safe or give me a good life. Instead, I need to believe that
- 12:44God is the one that is sustaining me each and every
- 12:48day. That is something you have to
- 12:50rely on The Voice of the Holy Spirit to be able to know and to
- 12:54understand. He will tell you, He will
- 12:56convict you if you're being arrogant or if you are being
- 12:59stingy or miserly or Scrooge, Scroogely being a Scrooge, He
- 13:06will let you know that, but you have to be willing to hear His
- 13:09voice if you're like, no, I would never be greedy.
- 13:13I would never trust in riches. I would never be arrogant about
- 13:16my possessions, and you refuse to at least ask the Holy Spirit.
- 13:22Is there an area of my life in which I am being greedy right
- 13:25now or I am being proud right now?
- 13:29If you're unwilling to ask that of the Holy Spirit, ask that
- 13:33question of the Holy Spirit. I want to encourage you to do
- 13:35so. Have an openness with God to say
- 13:37God. I don't think I'm in the wrong
- 13:39right now, but I'm willing to listen to you.
- 13:43We're summer 18. Instruct them to do what is
- 13:45good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to
- 13:51share. And then he says doing that
- 13:53stores up treasure for themselves as a good foundation
- 13:57for the coming age, so that they may take hold on what is truly
- 14:01life. When we are generous to others,
- 14:04if you will, we are investing in the coming Kingdom of God.
- 14:10So give your money away now and you will reap eternal dividends
- 14:15in the coming Kingdom. So he says instruct them to do
- 14:19what is good. Just because you're rich doesn't
- 14:21mean that you do not have to do good.
- 14:24Like you actually perform good works for others.
- 14:29He says be rich in good works. There are many people in our
- 14:32world today that are deeply ungodly and they think that if
- 14:37they just throw some money into charities or they throw money
- 14:41into a church that it will excuse their bad behavior.
- 14:45I've even seen people, thankfully I don't believe here
- 14:50at at Tabernacle, but heard of countless people through the
- 14:53years that because they give money to a church, they think
- 14:57that that makes them an elder of the church, that they get to
- 15:02determine what happens within the local church as a result of
- 15:07the money that they put in. But God's church is not for
- 15:12sale. And So what people need to be
- 15:16doing, if you are rich, if you have a lot of financial means,
- 15:19be rich in good works too. That you would be known as the
- 15:24kindness, the kindest, the goodliest person that you are
- 15:29joy filled, that you are a peaceful person, that you aren't
- 15:33argumentative. You're not constantly trying to
- 15:37scare people into submission through the use of funds.
- 15:42Like don't do that. Instead, be rich in good works.
- 15:45And he says to be generous and willing to share.
- 15:49Are you willing to give your money away to someone?
- 15:52Are you willing to give even though you might not ever that
- 15:57money back? Are you willing to just give
- 15:59money to people because God has richly blessed you and so you
- 16:02can bless others? I'm thankful for the times that
- 16:05God has used me to be able to do that in the lives of others.
- 16:10And my prayer is God, would you allow me to continue doing that?
- 16:14That I always want to be faithful even with the money
- 16:17that God has given me. I want to be generous, and I
- 16:20don't necessarily think I'm fabulously rich, but I know
- 16:23people who are in tougher situations than I am.
- 16:26And so I would want someone who has more money than me if I was
- 16:30in a bind, to be generous with me.
- 16:32And so I will be generous towards others.
- 16:36Then as we close today, he says, Timothy, guard what has been
- 16:40entrusted to you. The gospel has been given to you
- 16:44just as much as it was to Timothy.
- 16:45And so guard that, protect it. Follow through on what God has
- 16:49said. Don't allow anyone to contradict
- 16:53the word of God that you and I have received.
- 16:57If the Bible says it's sin, it's sin.
- 16:59If the Bible says it's good, it's good regardless of what the
- 17:03world says. So he says, guard what has been
- 17:05entrusted to you, avoiding irreverent and empty speech.
- 17:10So some people just talk to talk.
- 17:13Don't be one of those people, he says, and avoid contradictions
- 17:17from what is falsely called knowledge.
- 17:20There are people that will pretend that they have a super
- 17:25insider look or insider knowledge of real truth or what
- 17:31the Bible really says and they come up with some outlandish
- 17:35thing that no one in the past 2000 years of Christianity has
- 17:40ever believed or ever professed. And you can know these kinds of
- 17:44people are not people that I should be listening to.
- 17:47The faith that we have is an ancient faith.
- 17:49It is a historic faith. It is a faith that we are not
- 17:52inventing new doctrines or sins or beliefs that you have to hold
- 17:58and said. We believe what we have always
- 18:00professed as the people of God. Verse #21 Paul said, says these
- 18:05people irreverent, empty, those that contradict, He says from
- 18:10what is falsely called knowledge.
- 18:12By professing these things, some people have departed from the
- 18:18faith. So we want to be faithful to the
- 18:21Lord. We have been given something by
- 18:24God and by 2000 years of believers.
- 18:27We've been entrusted with the gospel and with the word of God,
- 18:30and we need to hold on to it, guard it because it is a
- 18:34precious treasure that we have been given.
- 18:37It's, if you will, it's an even better treasure than what has
- 18:40been given to the rich. For the rich people, they are
- 18:43called to be generous and to share of their wealth.
- 18:47You might say, oh, well, that sounds kind of communist.
- 18:49Well, the Bible was around a long, long, long time before
- 18:52communism. And this is for you as a
- 18:55believer in Jesus. If God has richly blessed you
- 19:00financially, you have been called to richly bless others
- 19:03financially. Be generous, share, Be rich, not
- 19:06just in your bank account. Be rich in good works.
- 19:10Because all of that is an investment in your ultimate
- 19:15future. What is truly life?
- 19:17Everlasting life. You will reap eternal dividends
- 19:20for the ways that you refuse greed and embrace generosity
- 19:25now. So be generous, love the gospel,
- 19:29guard it, protect the word of God.
- 19:32And as we do that God will be glorified.
- 19:35The next couple episodes of Tabernacle Talk are ask anything
- 19:39episodes and I've had several questions that have come in.
- 19:41If you have any questions, I would encourage you send those
- 19:45in and then the next time that I hit and ask Anything episode, I
- 19:50will address those. But we're going to be talking
- 19:53about some apocryphal books, specifically the book of First
- 19:58Enoch. Looking forward to that
- 20:00discussion. Also talking a little bit about
- 20:02the Trinity and the incarnation of Jesus Christ entering into
- 20:07human history and what some of that looks like.
- 20:11And I believe I had one or two other questions as well that
- 20:14came in. So we'll see what I have time
- 20:15for as we address those. But really looking forward to
- 20:18it. Thankful to be able to spend
- 20:20time in God's Word with you. May God bless you today.
