- 0:29that the first human recipient of the Neuro Link brain implant
- 0:34has successfully managed to control a computer cursor
- 0:37through his thoughts alone. However, the lack of shared
- 0:40evidence and details from Neuro Link has led to skepticism and
- 0:44concerns about medical researchers regarding the
- 0:46veracity of these claims and the safety of the technology.
- 0:50Our report, published in Nature, highlights that the concept of
- 0:54controlling devices through brain implants is not novel in
- 0:56the absence of detailed information from Neuralink
- 0:59prevents the scientific community from verifying the
- 1:02company's assertions and evaluating the risks involved.
- 1:05I was neurosurgeon Samir Chef, with a focus on implanted
- 1:08neurotechnology at the Bayer College of Medicine, expressed
- 1:12concerns about Neuralink's selective disclosure of
- 1:14information indicating A broader apprehension within the medical
- 1:17community about the company's transparency and also their
- 1:20safety protocols. Elon Musk's previous statements
- 1:23on social media platforms claiming the well-being of the
- 1:26human recipient of Neural Link's implant contrast sharply with
- 1:29the company's history of animal testing, which has been marred
- 1:32by ethical and welfare issues raising further alarms about
- 1:36patient safety. Now, disturbing incidents from
- 1:39Neural Link's past animal experiments, such as severe
- 1:42injuries and death in monkeys, have surfaced, highlighting
- 1:46potential risks and ethical dilemmas associated with the
- 1:49company's research practices. Now, doubts also linger about
- 1:52the effectiveness and safety of Neurolink's robotic surgeon used
- 1:56for implanted devices, as its capabilities have not been
- 1:59demonstrated on actual patients but only on a dummy in past
- 2:03footage. A particular case involving a
- 2:05monkey with a malfunctioning implant necessitating euthanasia
- 2:09raises additional concerns about the reliability and the safety
- 2:13of Neurolink's surgical procedures and their equipment.
- 2:16Now, despite these issues, Neuralink's claims of
- 2:19breakthroughs in human brain computer interfaces have not
- 2:22been substantiated, with concrete evidence casting doubt
- 2:25on the company's scientific contributions to the field.
- 2:28Now, experts in BCI research, such as Balu Ajiboy from Case
- 2:35Western Reserve University, point out that the ability for
- 2:38humans to control curses via brain implants has been achieved
- 2:42in the past, and that questions the novelty of Neuralink's
- 2:45achievements. Now, the BCI field has seen
- 2:47significant advancements outside of Neuralink's work, including
- 2:50enabling paralyzed individuals to communicate through digital
- 2:54avatars or control robotic limbs, showcasing the potential
- 2:58of brain implants in transforming those people's
- 3:00lives. Despite criticisms, some
- 3:03researchers acknowledge the value of increased competition
- 3:07and innovation in the BCI space with Neuralink contributes to
- 3:11even if its current achievements may not be so groundbreaking.
- 3:15And Musk's recent statements during a public discussion
- 3:18revealed that Neuralink's first human volunteer has reportedly
- 3:21recovered fully from the implant procedure and can interact with
- 3:24computers through thought, although these claims lack
- 3:28independent verification. Now.
- 3:30Neuralink's N1 device, which is said to facilitate this
- 3:33interaction, incorporates over 1000 electrodes to monitor and
- 3:36influence brain activity. This is a complex and delicate
- 3:40technological endeavor, and Musk's broader ambitions for
- 3:43Neuralink include developing cybernetic limbs and restoring
- 3:46sensory functions. But these goals are currently
- 3:49very far from being realized, partly due to the absence of
- 3:52tangible evidence supporting the company's claimed successes.
- 3:56Now, Musk's history of overstating the capabilities of
- 3:59his company's technologies has seen a various instances with
- 4:02Tesla and SpaceX raises questions about the credibility
- 4:06of his announcements regarding Neuralink's progress.
- 4:09Neuralink's endeavors along with Musk's promotional strategies
- 4:12contribute to his public image as an innovative leader despite
- 4:15the controversies and legal challenges that have accompanied
- 4:18some of his claims with Neuralink, SpaceX and also
- 4:21Tesla. The development of BC is,
- 4:24including those by Neuralink, offer invaluable insights into
- 4:27brain functionality and neuroplasticity, expanding our
- 4:30understanding of how the brain interacts with external devices
- 4:34and adapts to new forms of communication and control.
