Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Eating While Broke.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm your host, Coleen Witt, and today we have very
- 0:05Speaker 1: special guests, recording artists and writer, Bale in the building.
- 0:09Speaker 2: What's up? What's up? How you feeling?
- 0:11Speaker 1: Good. Good and hungry.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Okay. I'm going to whip it up for you. Good
- 0:15Speaker 2: little breakfast sandwich. You feel me?
- 0:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, I was about to say, what are you
- 0:18Speaker 1: going to have me eating today? What are the ingredients?
- 0:20Speaker 1: What goes in the breakfast sandwich for you?
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's real basic. I got you some good turkey bacon,
- 0:24Speaker 2: got you some good eggs, some cheese, and some bread.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And some butter. Is there a reason why you chose
- 0:30Speaker 1: turkey bacon? Being a judger, I was like, turkey bacon?
- 0:35Speaker 1: He care about health?
- 0:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't really eat pork like that.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Oh, okay.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like turkey bacon is good to me.
- 0:40Speaker 2: It's a little thin, but.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I like it. Do you cook it till it's crispy
- 0:45Speaker 1: or does it still have the bend in it when
- 0:46Speaker 1: you do it?
- 0:47Speaker 2: I cook it at a nice level. It's not too crispy.
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's not too thin. It's going to be just right.
- 0:52Speaker 2: It's going to be brown. It's going to be gold.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's going to be good. If you don't like it,
- 0:54Speaker 2: I think you're going to enjoy it for sure.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:56Speaker 2: You better enjoy it. Yeah. I'm just playing.
- 1:00Speaker 1: You'll know at the end if Bale can cook.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Nah, I'm just playing.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Well, get to cooking.
- 1:19Speaker 2: All right, for sure. Dang, golly, get to cooking, huh?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Get to cooking. Oh, I should have told you up front, which, oh,
- 1:24Speaker 1: you already, oh, he knows his way around the kitchen already.
- 1:27Speaker 2: A little bit, a little bit.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Usually I have to tell guests.
- 1:29Speaker 2: It's a little hot.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Usually I have to tell them up front which burgers
- 1:32Speaker 1: to operate. You already know which one is which.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Yeah. The key to cooking, though, is low. You just
- 1:38Speaker 2: got to keep the fire low. As long as you
- 1:40Speaker 2: keep the fire low, you're going to be always good.
- 1:42Speaker 2: That's a tip I learned. All right. Throw a little
- 1:47Speaker 2: butter in here. Yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So are we doing butter on the turkey bacon? Butter in,
- 1:52Speaker 1: frying the turkey bacon in butter? Look, now, are you
- 1:55Speaker 1: second guessing yourself?
- 1:56Speaker 2: I am, but yeah, I am. I'm just going to
- 1:57Speaker 2: do it. Because I feel like the bacon makers own
- 1:59Speaker 2: type of like thing, right? Yeah. But you know what?
- 2:01Speaker 1: That's mainly, I feel like with pork bacon.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Nah, the turkey going to do the same thing. Don't
- 2:05Speaker 2: worry about it. I got you. It's going to do
- 2:06Speaker 2: the same thing.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Don't second guess yourself. I shouldn't have never.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I'm not. You had me second guessing, but I vowed
- 2:11Speaker 2: to myself the other day that I'm never going to
- 2:12Speaker 2: second guess myself again.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Why'd you do that?
- 2:15Speaker 2: I don't know. I just feel like it's a thing
- 2:17Speaker 2: of having confidence. When you second guess yourself, that's where
- 2:19Speaker 2: all that anxiety shit. Can you cuss on here? Yeah.
- 2:22Speaker 2: That's when all that anxiety shit start kicking in. So
- 2:25Speaker 2: I don't want to have that. So I just stop
- 2:26Speaker 2: second guessing myself or feel like that.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Or was it, did it also be like maybe you
- 2:32Speaker 1: second guess yourself and then you were right the first time? Yeah,
- 2:35Speaker 1: that too. Is that what kind of triggered it?
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, all that too. But I feel like it's more
- 2:38Speaker 2: so shit. Why not? If I feel like I know
- 2:40Speaker 2: what I'm doing, then I know what I'm doing. So
- 2:42Speaker 2: that's how I just try to keep it from now on.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I like your confidence.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to have it. That's the only way
- 2:46Speaker 2: you're going to dribble.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So take me back to the breakfast sandwich. Why is
- 2:51Speaker 1: this a pivotal meal in your journey?
- 2:52Speaker 2: Because I'm the oldest of five, and my mom used
- 2:55Speaker 2: to work a lot. And I had to cook for
- 2:56Speaker 2: my brothers, my sisters, and stuff. Just watching. I wasn't
- 2:59Speaker 2: always the best babysitter, though. We got in so much
- 3:01Speaker 2: trouble doing stuff that we wasn't supposed to do. But
- 3:04Speaker 2: she taught me how to cook this. See, look, it's
- 3:05Speaker 2: getting too hot. So I turned it down now.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Oh, you wasn't playing.
- 3:09Speaker 2: You're right.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Plus, electric's hard to read anyways. It is.
- 3:13Speaker 2: So, but yeah, that's what, that's where I really got
- 3:15Speaker 2: it from.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What's the age gap on the siblings?
- 3:17Speaker 2: We are pretty close in age. We're not that far
- 3:19Speaker 2: in age. Me and my brothers, we probably all, my
- 3:23Speaker 2: youngest sister, she 18. So she the youngest, but for
- 3:25Speaker 2: the most part, we are all like, like two, three
- 3:27Speaker 2: years apart. Nobody too much older and not too much.
- 3:30Speaker 1: What's up with Papa Deuce?
- 3:32Speaker 2: What's that? What's Papa Deuce?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Dad.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Oh, my dad. Oh, my dad. He's an interesting fella.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He's been in jail all my life.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Okay.
- 3:41Speaker 2: For the most of my life. He tapping what he can.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I used to, it used to affect me a lot.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Like growing up, because I played sports too growing up.
- 3:48Speaker 2: So you see a lot of like kids, how their
- 3:50Speaker 2: fathers did and stuff. And your dad and I, he'd
- 3:52Speaker 2: be like, damn, where my home, where the boy at?
- 3:54Speaker 2: When you get older, your mom have certain conversations. When
- 3:57Speaker 2: you ready for him, I guess she did a good
- 3:58Speaker 2: job of kind of like keeping us away as long
- 4:00Speaker 2: as she could. And then start to find out. But
- 4:03Speaker 2: I just look at it like, man, he didn't really
- 4:05Speaker 2: have no guidance himself growing up. You feel me? Like
- 4:07Speaker 2: my grandma and stuff, his dad wasn't really there. So
- 4:11Speaker 2: it's like a cycle almost.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I hear a lot of good things about him. I
- 4:15Speaker 2: talk to him a lot. He called me often, check
- 4:17Speaker 2: up on me. For somebody to be in that situation,
- 4:19Speaker 2: he could have been like, man, fuck it. I don't care.
- 4:20Speaker 2: They got to figure it out on their own. But
- 4:22Speaker 2: he showed up in the ways he can. And I
- 4:24Speaker 2: respect that at least. Yeah. I don't hold against him.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I just charge it to the gang.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But he's not in jail anymore, right?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Yeah. He's going to be in there for the rest
- 4:30Speaker 2: of my life.
- 4:31Speaker 1: Oh, for real?
- 4:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 1: From when you was baby to now?
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Did he go in young?
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And your mom didn't tell you until... She.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Probably told me like when I started asking questions. Probably
- 4:40Speaker 2: found out I was probably eight years old.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Did you ask to go see him and stuff?
- 4:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but she said she'd never take us up there.
- 4:47Speaker 2: She took us up there one time. I remember it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And then she told him like, this is the last
- 4:50Speaker 2: time I'm ever going to bring my kids up here. So,
- 4:52Speaker 2: you know, whatever you got to get off, you should.
- 4:53Speaker 2: And I think that's what we've been like. That's why
- 4:56Speaker 2: he's been always call, write letters. Now the system has
- 4:58Speaker 2: changed so much. They got iPads in there. So you
- 5:00Speaker 2: can face record them and stuff.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You can face record or face.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Face time them, yeah. You can face time them and
- 5:05Speaker 2: stuff in there now, so.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Were you ever upset at your mom for not bringing
- 5:09Speaker 1: you more than once? Did you understand why she was
- 5:11Speaker 1: saying that?
- 5:12Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I never was like... Upset is a word
- 5:16Speaker 2: that I wouldn't use because upset means I'm pissed off.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Maybe a little confused. Maybe like I'm not mature enough
- 5:21Speaker 2: to understand what's going on at eight, nine years old,
- 5:23Speaker 2: why she did the thing she did. But now I
- 5:25Speaker 2: understand she's just trying to protect me and keep my
- 5:27Speaker 2: mind away from any of that environment as much as
- 5:29Speaker 2: she could because it's like, what can you do though?
- 5:32Speaker 2: Only thing I can do is try to protect my baby.
- 5:35Speaker 2: So I respect it for her. I respect every decision
- 5:38Speaker 2: she made, honestly. She's a different type of woman.
- 5:41Speaker 1: What does she do to provide for you guys?
- 5:43Speaker 2: My mom was a school teacher.
- 5:45Speaker 1: She was a school teacher?
- 5:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And raised five kids? Yeah. They be playing school teachers.
- 5:51Speaker 2: No, for real, she's a different type of woman. She's
- 5:54Speaker 2: very strong, real smart. Real crafty. I call her crafty
- 6:00Speaker 2: because she just always figure out a way.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Okay.
- 6:02Speaker 2: So I just always respected that. And then my grandma,
- 6:04Speaker 2: so my mom, my family's really from Chicago. My mom,
- 6:07Speaker 2: her sister is my grandma. So my grandma, when she
- 6:10Speaker 2: moved out here, she probably moved out here when I
- 6:12Speaker 2: was like 10, 11. And then she kind of helped
- 6:13Speaker 2: a lot too. So they kind of like really raised
- 6:15Speaker 2: me besides like my uncles. Some of my uncles, some
- 6:18Speaker 2: of my dad's friends that I now call my uncles.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Oh, your dad's friends like kind of.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Yeah, they stepped in, helped my mom make sure that
- 6:24Speaker 2: we were straight. You get the type of family like that.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Like in the ghetto, I feel like When you're from
- 6:29Speaker 2: the ghetto, you just get a blend of people. Yeah.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Nobody's really like technically family, but the way y'all come together,
- 6:34Speaker 2: the way the community come together, it just gets shaped
- 6:36Speaker 2: like that. Yeah. So, yeah. That's why I be like, man,
- 6:38Speaker 2: you're my family ghetto. But it really is, though. Because
- 6:41Speaker 2: we all just found each other. Well, my mom found them,
- 6:45Speaker 2: and I've been rocking with them since my whole life.
- 6:47Speaker 2: As long as I can remember.
- 6:49Speaker 1: When did you start to get into music?
- 6:52Speaker 2: I don't know. I've been doing music for eight years,
- 6:54Speaker 2: but I feel like music has always been a part
- 6:55Speaker 2: of my life.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Do you remember like a pivotal moment where you were like,
- 6:57Speaker 1: I think I'm going to.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I don't know. One of my friends from Atlanta, he
- 7:01Speaker 2: had came out here to visit me. L'Oreal. He had
- 7:05Speaker 2: came out here and he was making beats and stuff.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And then one time he left the beat on the
- 7:10Speaker 2: computer and then I just rapped on it. And then
- 7:13Speaker 2: he was like, man, you really, you actually really good.
- 7:14Speaker 2: You should start to take this serious. Then I was like, man,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't really, I don't really know.
- 7:19Speaker 2: I was just like, man, rapper. I never really thought
- 7:21Speaker 2: about that. I feel like I always say like music
- 7:23Speaker 2: kind of chose me. I wasn't like, Seeking it out.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I know a lot of people that was like, man,
- 7:26Speaker 2: I wanted to be a rapper since I was 15,
- 7:27Speaker 2: 14 years old. I didn't really think that was my story.
- 7:30Speaker 1: What did you think your story was going to be?
- 7:32Speaker 2: I don't know. I really didn't know. Where I'm from
- 7:35Speaker 2: is not like a lot of, I don't got a
- 7:37Speaker 2: lot of choices. My story was just not trying to
- 7:39Speaker 2: die or go to jail, honestly. So I just felt
- 7:42Speaker 2: when I found music, it kind of kept me out
- 7:44Speaker 2: of a lot of things that I probably could have
- 7:46Speaker 2: been involved in. So I just felt like that shit,
- 7:48Speaker 2: it was just a blessing. And I'm not even trying
- 7:50Speaker 2: to sound dramatic. That's just always the way I thought.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Just trying to not be like my pops or some
- 7:56Speaker 2: of the people in my family.
- 7:58Speaker 1: Growing up in South Central, do you think it created
- 8:05Speaker 1: some of your views?
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Some negative, some positive. But I feel like traveling
- 8:10Speaker 2: has changed that too. So I feel like the more
- 8:13Speaker 2: I've been traveling, the more I've been able to see
- 8:16Speaker 2: things at a different type of lens. But yeah, it's definitely.
- 8:19Speaker 2: I feel like where I'm from is real tribal. So
- 8:21Speaker 2: it's real. You kind of stick to one side of
- 8:24Speaker 2: the city. Got that side of the city. And then
- 8:26Speaker 2: that people got their side of the city.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Are you talking about gangs and stuff like that?
- 8:29Speaker 2: It's real. It's real divided. Yeah. But the more you
- 8:32Speaker 2: start to do even music, you meet people that want
- 8:35Speaker 2: more from themselves. So you meet people that's trying to expand.
- 8:37Speaker 2: So now y'all got no choice but to either work
- 8:39Speaker 2: with each other. So with that being said, and then
- 8:42Speaker 2: I feel like that's helped me grow a lot. It's
- 8:44Speaker 2: helped me mature a lot. And I don't got to
- 8:46Speaker 2: always live like this because this is what I've been
- 8:49Speaker 2: taught or this is how This will go on. I
- 8:51Speaker 2: can do whatever I want to, honestly.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Growing up in South Central, did you travel a lot?
- 8:57Speaker 1: Go to the beaches and step outside of?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah. When I got older, though, but yeah.
- 9:03Speaker 1: But not when you were younger?
- 9:04Speaker 2: No, not when I was younger.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Looking back, do you wish you would have seen more?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Did more? Heck yeah. I wish I would have explored more.
- 9:11Speaker 2: I wish I would have explored. I got into stuff
- 9:14Speaker 2: as a kid around my area. I wish I would have.
- 9:16Speaker 2: Heck yeah, I wish I would have. Just left more.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And not just to do stupid stuff. I'm like left
- 9:21Speaker 2: to go discover and go explore and go expand my mind.
- 9:24Speaker 2: You feel me?
- 9:26Speaker 1: Some of that stuff is out of your control though too, right?
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 9:30Speaker 1: You hella stepping off camera. I just realized that.
- 9:32Speaker 2: I know, I know. I just wanted to get in there.
- 9:35Speaker 1: I should have brought it closer for you.
- 9:36Speaker 2: No, it's all good.
- 9:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it was like I was reading somewhere
- 9:39Speaker 1: Trevor Noah, his mom used to take him to different
- 9:42Speaker 1: neighborhoods with big houses and stuff and that kind of.
- 9:45Speaker 1: but I also heard that people in California, there's a
- 9:47Speaker 1: lot of people in California where there's young people that
- 9:49Speaker 1: have never been to the beach and you're like.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, so I got a friend, his family own a restaurant,
- 9:53Speaker 2: We jamming shout out to damo.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Oh i love we jamming wait that's your.
- 9:57Speaker 2: Friend oh his mom is super successful yeah so they
- 10:01Speaker 2: lived in a cool area so when i met him
- 10:03Speaker 2: that's when i really was like damn man there's a
- 10:04Speaker 2: lot a lot of shit out here he used to
- 10:06Speaker 2: always like you know you could get all this man
- 10:08Speaker 2: all you gotta do is put your mind to it
- 10:10Speaker 2: so that's the first friend i had that was like
- 10:12Speaker 2: Where I'm from, that was like, actually like family was
- 10:15Speaker 2: successful and doing stuff. And they used to take me places.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And he was from South Central?
- 10:19Speaker 2: Really? He's from Los Angeles. Yeah. So, you know, that
- 10:22Speaker 2: was like, I owe a lot to him too, just
- 10:24Speaker 2: for even just opening my mind up to things. A
- 10:26Speaker 2: lot of stuff. I was just, this is tight. And
- 10:28Speaker 2: I guess that kind of sparked me because he was
- 10:31Speaker 2: also anchored for me to do music too. He's like, bro, no,
- 10:33Speaker 2: you can rap. You can really do this, man. You
- 10:34Speaker 2: should just try it and buckle down. So I was
- 10:37Speaker 2: just like, man, F it. I'm going to just try it.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And then, like I said, I second-guessed myself for a
- 10:42Speaker 2: long time. And when I stopped second-guessing myself and I
- 10:45Speaker 2: really started taking it serious, things started happening for the good.
- 10:49Speaker 2: And it's a journey. You're doing stuff. You're an entrepreneur.
- 10:51Speaker 2: You understand the peaks and the valleys. But I never
- 10:54Speaker 2: let the valleys discourage me. I just kept climbing.
- 10:57Speaker 1: What was your first indicator that you were on the
- 10:59Speaker 1: right path?
- 11:00Speaker 2: When I did my first show and everybody was like, man,
- 11:03Speaker 2: this is tight. And the crowd came up after me
- 11:06Speaker 2: and was like, man, you're incredible. And I was like,
- 11:09Speaker 2: all right, fuck it. I'm in the game now. I'm
- 11:10Speaker 2: going to keep dribbling. So, I don't know. It's just,
- 11:13Speaker 2: I feel like we all, as much as people be like,
- 11:15Speaker 2: we don't want no validation. You kind of need some
- 11:17Speaker 2: type of validation to make sure you're doing something right.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I think that's a lot. My bad. I got, I'm
- 11:21Speaker 2: just going to wipe that up for you later on.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I'm not tripping. It look like you're doing a good
- 11:25Speaker 1: job in the kitchen.
- 11:27Speaker 2: I feel like once I got a certain type of
- 11:28Speaker 2: validation that was necessary for me to continue on, not
- 11:32Speaker 2: the type of validation that feeds my ego, but something
- 11:34Speaker 2: that gives me certainty.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Yeah, something's brewing here. It's like more than one person,
- 11:39Speaker 1: more than just the home.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Like, oh man, you can do it. But like once
- 11:42Speaker 2: outside people start giving me like, oh no, you know
- 11:44Speaker 2: what you're doing. Then I started getting support from people
- 11:46Speaker 2: that I don't even know. And that's why I was like,
- 11:48Speaker 2: oh yeah, I'm on to something now.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Do you remember the first time that you second guessed
- 11:51Speaker 1: yourself after? Or like one of the first notable times
- 11:55Speaker 1: where you started, you kind of second guessed, where you
- 11:59Speaker 1: were on the right path and you were like, I
- 12:00Speaker 1: don't know.
- 12:01Speaker 2: I think that's like a continuing thing. I can't really
- 12:04Speaker 2: pinpoint the first time it happened, but I feel like,
- 12:06Speaker 2: of course, when you don't get the results that you
- 12:08Speaker 2: feel like you should, that's something that's always going to
- 12:10Speaker 2: discourage you when you're trying to build something. You feel me?
- 12:13Speaker 2: I could just imagine the Wright brothers when I was
- 12:15Speaker 2: building an airplane when that shit crashed the first time.
- 12:17Speaker 2: I was like, man, hell no. But if they didn't
- 12:18Speaker 2: keep on going, we wouldn't be flying in buses. So
- 12:21Speaker 2: it's just, I don't know. I feel like I can't
- 12:23Speaker 2: remember the first time. I couldn't be able to tell
- 12:25Speaker 2: you that. If I tried to tell you that, I'd
- 12:26Speaker 2: actually be lying to you. But I just know that
- 12:29Speaker 2: I never really paid attention to that. I just kept
- 12:31Speaker 2: on going because if I did, I wouldn't be here
- 12:33Speaker 2: right now cooking in this kitchen with you.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You're really good with your words. I feel like you're
- 12:37Speaker 1: very intentional about your words. Did you grow up reading
- 12:41Speaker 1: a lot?
- 12:42Speaker 2: My grandma, yeah, she used to She was crazy. Not
- 12:46Speaker 2: crazy in a bad way, but in a way. She
- 12:47Speaker 2: used to be on me, on us, because when you
- 12:50Speaker 2: got a single mother And I got four brothers. So
- 12:52Speaker 2: it's like when it's a lady.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Damn, it's all five boys? That's crazy.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I got three brothers and one sister. I always say
- 12:58Speaker 2: four because she like a little dude too. She not,
- 13:00Speaker 2: but like she grew around all boys. So it was like.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Oh wait, you have four boys and one sister. And
- 13:04Speaker 1: she's the baby?
- 13:04Speaker 2: She's the baby, yeah. Aw.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Damn, I feel bad for her.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Don't hurt her.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know.
- 13:09Speaker 2: Yeah, she's tough.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Oh, I was going to say, I feel bad for
- 13:11Speaker 1: anybody that has to date her. Could you imagine going
- 13:13Speaker 1: through that lineup?
- 13:15Speaker 2: We ain't going to be the problem. She is. You know,
- 13:17Speaker 2: it's her. She the one that's going, my mom say
- 13:19Speaker 2: that all the time. Like, you ain't going to get
- 13:20Speaker 2: no man. Because the way you talk to people is
- 13:22Speaker 2: out of pocket.
- 13:23Speaker 1: That's hilarious.
- 13:24Speaker 2: She like 19, 18.
- 13:26Speaker 1: But she's also the baby, so she's probably a little spoiled.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Yeah, she is. But that's my daughter, KB. Shout out
- 13:30Speaker 2: to Kendall. So my grandma, back to the readings. My grandma,
- 13:33Speaker 2: she used to, yeah, like on the weekends, my mom
- 13:35Speaker 2: used to go to work and stuff. Or my mom
- 13:36Speaker 2: would just leave to go, whatever she was doing. Just go,
- 13:39Speaker 2: even to go get some time to herself. Grandma, you
- 13:41Speaker 2: can't go outside, nothing until you do. reading and then
- 13:44Speaker 2: summer school, she used to really take that serious. I
- 13:48Speaker 2: can attribute that to her. Just me not like being
- 13:51Speaker 2: a complete idiot. I am an idiot though sometimes, but
- 13:55Speaker 2: I can attribute to mine the way I think and
- 13:57Speaker 2: the way I process stuff and the way I present myself.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Ruth Riley got a lot to do with that. I'm
- 14:02Speaker 2: patting the bacon so it won't be soggy.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Guys, it looks really nice. It looks like a very
- 14:07Speaker 1: good crispy, but not too crispy, not burnt. Very impressive bacon. Okay.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Now let's get to the rest of this egg sandwich
- 14:15Speaker 1: that takes 35 minutes. You was a single mom.
- 14:19Speaker 2: I don't know, bro. Yeah. Damn. I'm trying to see
- 14:22Speaker 2: what I'm going to do next. I'm kind of confused
- 14:24Speaker 2: now because usually I could rinse out a pot or
- 14:26Speaker 2: something like that and throw it back in.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Why don't you just toast the bread in the.
- 14:32Speaker 2: In the oil?
- 14:32Speaker 1: Hell yeah.
- 14:33Speaker 2: Okay, I didn't know if you was down like that.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I get down. Kelly, don't judge. I see her over there.
- 14:39Speaker 1: She sat up when we was about to mess up.
- 14:41Speaker 1: He'll be fine.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 14:43Speaker 1: He'll be fine.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I'm good. I'm good. All right. Thank you so much.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Yeah, this is eating while broke. I try to remind
- 14:50Speaker 1: you guys. We are set cooking. So no, the sink
- 14:53Speaker 1: is behind the cameras.
- 14:54Speaker 2: I don't mind. I don't mind at all.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Why was it important for you to name, is that
- 14:59Speaker 1: blocking any cameras, by the way? Why was it so
- 15:02Speaker 1: important for you to name this album Stay Faithful?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Because it's everything I've been through. The ups, like I said,
- 15:09Speaker 2: the ups and downs, the flows, all the no's I got.
- 15:12Speaker 2: I got more no's than I got yes's, I'll tell
- 15:14Speaker 2: you that much. And I just feel like, I just
- 15:17Speaker 2: feel like I never let that, I never let that
- 15:19Speaker 2: bother me. And I want to let everybody know, especially
- 15:22Speaker 2: where I come from, it's easy to get to know
- 15:24Speaker 2: where I'm from. Because niggas ain't I ain't going to
- 15:27Speaker 2: say niggas. I'm sorry. We're not really afforded a lot
- 15:29Speaker 2: of opportunity where I'm from. So it's like when you
- 15:32Speaker 2: hear no and you care about so much, if you
- 15:33Speaker 2: care about something so much and then you hear, oh, no,
- 15:36Speaker 2: you can't do this right now, it's easy for somebody
- 15:37Speaker 2: to get turned off or walk away. So my whole
- 15:40Speaker 2: thing is just I want everybody to know I've been
- 15:42Speaker 2: said no to plenty of times, but I'm still here
- 15:43Speaker 2: and I stay faithful and I'm getting to where I'm going.
- 15:46Speaker 2: And if you've got that attitude, I think you're going
- 15:48Speaker 2: to be straight for real.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Who are you getting no's from?
- 15:50Speaker 2: Anybody. It could be record labels. It could be if
- 15:53Speaker 2: I ask somebody for favors. Whatever, just like I didn't
- 15:56Speaker 2: got no's. Can I do a show here? Can I
- 15:58Speaker 2: perform here? I didn't got no's. There's plenty of no's
- 16:01Speaker 2: I got, but I thugged it out.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Even in this age, you would still do a label deal?
- 16:09Speaker 2: Yeah, if it makes sense. If it makes sense for
- 16:10Speaker 2: me and what I'm doing in my career, why not?
- 16:12Speaker 2: I'll do anything that makes sense now. Come on. You
- 16:14Speaker 2: from New York. You got to know that.
- 16:16Speaker 1: Yeah, but I feel like now we're in an age
- 16:18Speaker 1: where almost being independent is better, no?
- 16:20Speaker 2: That's just up to your perspective. If you value your independency,
- 16:23Speaker 2: if you feel like the situation that you want to
- 16:26Speaker 2: be in is not going to be conducive to what
- 16:27Speaker 2: you want to do in your career, then maybe, yeah.
- 16:29Speaker 2: But if you want somebody to kind of help you
- 16:32Speaker 2: and give you better direction and give you more opportunities,
- 16:35Speaker 2: then I feel like you said it on set. My bad.
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'm looking at this egg. I'm looking at this egg.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Did you put butter in that?
- 16:48Speaker 2: No, I didn't.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Let me just tell you something. I've done
- 16:52Speaker 1: that before. Look, why y'all? Don't even look up, okay?
- 16:56Speaker 1: It'll hurt your spirit to see them just laughing at you.
- 16:59Speaker 2: They ladies. They should laugh.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Your boy is laughing, too. He was laughing so hard,
- 17:04Speaker 1: he went like this.
- 17:05Speaker 2: I ain't never seen him cook a day in his life, so...
- 17:08Speaker 2: Until I see him do this, I'm up one. I'm
- 17:11Speaker 2: up one.
- 17:12Speaker 1: That's how you do a hard egg?
- 17:13Speaker 2: Yeah. What's wrong with that? As long as it's good, right?
- 17:16Speaker 1: It's good.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Look. As long as it's good.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Look, don't second guess yourself. You got this.
- 17:21Speaker 2: No, I'm burning the bread.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Damn. It's okay.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:24Speaker 1: It's okay. You got more bread over there. You know
- 17:26Speaker 1: we got... You're going to burn your little fingers.
- 17:28Speaker 2: No, I'm good. I'm a man.
- 17:30Speaker 1: He said I'm good, but it got hot.
- 17:36Speaker 2: All right, now what you were saying again, my bad.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah, you want more bread? You got to toast all
- 17:39Speaker 1: of it.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I am, I am, I am, I am. Okay. There. Okay.
- 17:42Speaker 2: I'm going to toast the bread last.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Let me stop disrupting your cooking.
- 17:46Speaker 2: All right, go ahead. What was the question?
- 17:47Speaker 1: Where did we leave off? What was we talking about?
- 17:52Speaker 1: Stay faithful.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Okay.
- 17:53Speaker 1: No, yes. The pros and.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Cons.
- 17:57Speaker 1: The pros and cons of independence.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Okay. That sound like a class. A school. A course.
- 18:04Speaker 2: A course. Yeah, college scores. The pros and cons of independence. Okay. Oh,
- 18:10Speaker 2: I'm messing it up.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that egg is a goner.
- 18:13Speaker 2: All right, this is going to be mine. All right, yeah.
- 18:19Speaker 2: I feel like I said independence.
- 18:20Speaker 1: I wish we had an overhead camera for this egg,
- 18:22Speaker 1: this poor egg.
- 18:24Speaker 2: No, this egg is going to be mine. Okay, okay.
- 18:26Speaker 2: I'm going to make you a good one because I
- 18:28Speaker 2: don't want you to talk about.
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think you got to turn it the other way, no?
- 18:30Speaker 2: Okay. Yeah.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Look, guys, you know what? You guys are going to
- 18:35Speaker 1: get talked to in the car. You going to talk
- 18:36Speaker 1: to them? You going to give them a good talking
- 18:37Speaker 1: when they get in the car?
- 18:38Speaker 2: Nah, this is what we do all the time. Okay.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Okay, so let's talk about the pros and cons of
- 18:45Speaker 1: just you pursuing your craft in general.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Okay, what's the pros? The pros are I get to
- 18:52Speaker 2: do what I love and I get to make something
- 18:55Speaker 2: out of myself of doing what I love. The cons
- 18:59Speaker 2: are sometimes the things that I want are always not
- 19:01Speaker 2: going to come when I want them. So I got
- 19:02Speaker 2: to learn how to stay patient and remain and understand
- 19:06Speaker 2: that I'm valued. I understand. Don't forget that I have
- 19:10Speaker 2: value regardless of what's going on. So that's the pros
- 19:13Speaker 2: and the cons.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Do you measure your success by how many downloads, how
- 19:18Speaker 1: many likes, how much money? Or is there another way
- 19:21Speaker 1: you measure your success?
- 19:22Speaker 2: Of course, we all want those type of things. I'm successful.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I feel like I'm successful. I feel like I get
- 19:27Speaker 2: to do what I want to do, wake up and
- 19:28Speaker 2: do what I love to do every single day. And
- 19:30Speaker 2: nobody's like, oh, you got to do X, Y, and Z.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I feel like I got a great team, whether they
- 19:35Speaker 2: do that.
- 19:36Speaker 1: That giggling and stuff.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Whether they laugh or not about my cooking, but that's success.
- 19:40Speaker 2: A lot of people don't have that.
- 19:42Speaker 1: How hard was it to find your team?
- 19:44Speaker 2: It took a little time. Let this cool down because
- 19:46Speaker 2: it's hot as hell in here now. Okay, I got
- 19:49Speaker 2: one down.
- 19:50Speaker 1: They ain't laughing. I feel for you, man. You cooking.
- 19:52Speaker 1: You forgot the turkey bacon in yours.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Oh, I did. My bad.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Look, I don't know. I'm going to beat them up
- 19:58Speaker 1: for you, okay?
- 19:58Speaker 2: Please do. I got one down. That look good, though.
- 20:02Speaker 1: They look good.
- 20:02Speaker 2: I ain't going to lie.
- 20:03Speaker 1: It look good because the cheese is all melty and squishy.
- 20:07Speaker 2: It look good. I ain't going to lie.
- 20:08Speaker 1: I hope mine looks better.
- 20:09Speaker 2: It did.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I love you, man. I do.
- 20:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:16Speaker 1: You got this.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Butter.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Butter.
- 20:18Speaker 2: Okay, I got you. I got you. Butter. Okay, I
- 20:20Speaker 2: got you. All right.
- 20:22Speaker 1: Listen, let me tell you guys something. I know it's
- 20:24Speaker 1: funny over there, but it is really hard to interview
- 20:27Speaker 1: and cook at the same time. People will come up
- 20:30Speaker 1: in here and they'll try to do a whole meal
- 20:32Speaker 1: because they want to be chef. And I'm like, yeah,
- 20:34Speaker 1: try cooking and talking. Oh, we got this. And they leave.
- 20:37Speaker 1: They be like, that's so hard to do. And I'm
- 20:40Speaker 1: trying to pull out all his OG throwback stories.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I think we're doing a great job.
- 20:46Speaker 1: Oh, thank you.
- 20:47Speaker 2: We're doing a great job. We here. You helping me.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You guiding me through the process.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Yes. See, if you, I would love to, you know what?
- 20:54Speaker 1: One day I want to cook for someone on the show.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Cause I cook so different. I lather up butter. I
- 21:00Speaker 1: don't even do it with a knife. I just.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Oh, you do it like that.
- 21:03Speaker 1: Yeah. Hell yeah. That's why I have the, what do
- 21:06Speaker 1: they call it? Little tiny fat on the stomach. Is
- 21:09Speaker 1: that visceral fat or something? I have that. It's just
- 21:12Speaker 1: very little though. I'm lucky. I don't have a lot
- 21:14Speaker 1: of it, but that's all from the butter I consume.
- 21:16Speaker 1: I go to Costco and I buy the bulk butter.
- 21:20Speaker 1: like six cases of butter.
- 21:22Speaker 2: Yeah, you going crazy with six cases of butter.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I go through butter. I could see you saying
- 21:28Speaker 1: that because you put so little butter on the pot.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I know. I should put more?
- 21:34Speaker 1: No, leave it. You doing fine. I don't want you
- 21:37Speaker 1: to mess up this egg that's going to take forever
- 21:39Speaker 1: to get to my plate. Alright, so let's talk about
- 21:43Speaker 1: Stay Faithful. What's some of your favorite tracks on the album?
- 21:46Speaker 1: What would you say was a track that was very
- 21:49Speaker 1: meaningful or you wrote in under a minute?
- 21:52Speaker 2: The last one I wrote, the title track of the
- 21:54Speaker 2: song Stay Faithful, that was like, to me it's the
- 21:56Speaker 2: most important one because I didn't really want to do it,
- 21:59Speaker 2: but DL made me do it and I was ready
- 22:03Speaker 2: to walk out the studio. Man, I ain't doing this.
- 22:04Speaker 2: It was taking forever, but I felt like when it
- 22:06Speaker 2: came out, it sounded really good and then when I
- 22:09Speaker 2: played it for everybody at the listening party. It was
- 22:11Speaker 2: all like, man, that's the best song on the album.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Wait, why didn't you want to do it though?
- 22:15Speaker 2: Because I felt like it was already done. I didn't
- 22:17Speaker 2: need nothing. I kept on avoiding them too. I used
- 22:19Speaker 2: to walk in the studio like, we need to do
- 22:20Speaker 2: another song. It's like, all right, for sure. I'll walk out.
- 22:23Speaker 2: If we need to do another record, oh yeah, for
- 22:25Speaker 2: sure I'll walk out. And then one day it was like,
- 22:27Speaker 2: we would have to turn it in. He was like,
- 22:28Speaker 2: come on, man. You're going to get the song done.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And then he didn't let me leave. He locked me
- 22:32Speaker 2: in there.
- 22:34Speaker 1: How did you find your team?
- 22:35Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like it just, we've been...
- 22:39Speaker 2: I've been knowing D.L. for a long time. I met D.L.
- 22:41Speaker 2: when I met my friend, Delmo, that I was telling
- 22:43Speaker 2: you about that helped me.
- 22:43Speaker 1: The We Jammin' kid?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah. So I met him through there and he always
- 22:46Speaker 2: been like supporting me through my journey. And then Ella,
- 22:50Speaker 2: I met her through just being around LA doing certain
- 22:52Speaker 2: different type of podcasts. I didn't even know she was
- 22:55Speaker 2: with D.L. So that was just, that just felt right
- 22:57Speaker 2: at home. And then we still got the fellas that's
- 22:59Speaker 2: not here. We got Marcel, AWACS, and Beans. That's my,
- 23:03Speaker 2: it's like my crew right there. And we just all
- 23:05Speaker 2: believed in this. So we all was like, man, let's
- 23:06Speaker 2: just stay down and let's get this committed. And I
- 23:09Speaker 2: just felt like, you know, that's how it happened.
- 23:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I was curious for other people out there, what
- 23:14Speaker 1: were some of the indicators? I feel like sometimes finding
- 23:16Speaker 1: people that really believe in you is key. It's hard.
- 23:19Speaker 2: It's a hard thing. But isn't that a sign of success, though?
- 23:22Speaker 2: I have to say that's probably like one of the
- 23:24Speaker 2: biggest signs of success. Are you going to be successful?
- 23:26Speaker 2: Because you got people that's going to show up for you.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Sometimes when you don't feel like showing up for yourself,
- 23:30Speaker 2: that's like, you know, that's crazy. That's a thing. Because
- 23:34Speaker 2: nobody has to give a care.
- 23:36Speaker 1: That's true.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Nobody got to care. Why should I care about what you...
- 23:39Speaker 2: Why is your life and your career more important than
- 23:41Speaker 2: me and what I got going on in my life?
- 23:44Speaker 2: It's hard to find people like that, that care that much.
- 23:47Speaker 1: How does your family respond to you pursuing music as
- 23:50Speaker 1: long as you have been doing it?
- 23:51Speaker 2: Oh, they love it. They just want me to make
- 23:53Speaker 2: sure that... Like I said, my mom's whole thing was
- 23:55Speaker 2: to make sure that I wasn't dead or in jail.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I feel like as long as I'm doing this and
- 24:00Speaker 2: it's keeping me out the way and it's positive and
- 24:03Speaker 2: I get to travel and I get to meet new
- 24:05Speaker 2: people and I get to stay creative. And I feel
- 24:08Speaker 2: like they don't mind. My brothers and us, they always
- 24:10Speaker 2: supported me. They never told me what I was doing
- 24:13Speaker 2: was weak or like stop. Sometimes they get up on
- 24:15Speaker 2: me if they feel like I'm getting lazy because that
- 24:18Speaker 2: can't happen too. Other than that, everybody's like, as long
- 24:21Speaker 2: as I keep on showing up for myself, they support it.
- 24:24Speaker 2: So that's a blessing too. Even that's a blessing.
- 24:27Speaker 1: How does this play out with you being a new dad?
- 24:30Speaker 1: I guess five years in the game. We are the
- 24:32Speaker 1: same age, by the way. I got a five year old.
- 24:34Speaker 2: At first I was scared. At first it was like
- 24:36Speaker 2: something I didn't, I don't know. I wasn't, that was
- 24:38Speaker 2: the only thing that kind of was probably going to
- 24:40Speaker 2: stop me.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Stop you?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah. I was going to be like, man, it's the baby.
- 24:44Speaker 2: I got to look out for little Onyx. That's her name.
- 24:46Speaker 1: What's her name?
- 24:47Speaker 2: Onyx.
- 24:48Speaker 1: That's a nice name.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Yeah. It means black.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Wait, he's a boy?
- 24:52Speaker 2: Nah, she's a girl.
- 24:53Speaker 1: He's a girl?
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay. When I have a son, I'm going to
- 24:56Speaker 2: name him Jet. So it's going to be honest as jet.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Two black kids. That's funny, huh? Nah, I just, I
- 25:05Speaker 2: don't know. I ain't going to lie. Her mom is,
- 25:08Speaker 2: she was supportive about it. I'm doing so well at it.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It was just like, if you're going to keep on
- 25:13Speaker 2: doing it, like I said, as long as I keep
- 25:15Speaker 2: on showing up, I'm going to give you three pieces
- 25:17Speaker 2: of bacon.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I don't need three. I don't really eat that much meat.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Okay. Then look.
- 25:20Speaker 1: But thank you.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Let me do it this way.
- 25:25Speaker 1: Don't burn yourself. Damn. It's okay, you got this.
- 25:31Speaker 2: I got this.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I got faith in you.
- 25:33Speaker 2: I got this. I got this. I turned it off though,
- 25:36Speaker 2: so I don't even know why it's still so hot. Boom.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Oh, I see what you're trying to do.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm trying to scoop it up for you. Ah, man.
- 25:49Speaker 1: There you go.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Damn.
- 25:51Speaker 1: There you go. I wish we had a zoom in.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I wish you had a zoom in guys. There you go.
- 26:00Speaker 1: All right. You got this here. Use this plate.
- 26:04Speaker 2: All right. Thank you so much.
- 26:06Speaker 1: They're so well mannered.
- 26:09Speaker 2: You don't.
- 26:10Speaker 1: You guys didn't see this, but a lady on your team,
- 26:14Speaker 1: she said sorry for something so small. He was like,
- 26:16Speaker 1: don't say sorry. Hey.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Don't say sorry.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Don't say sorry.
- 26:20Speaker 2: Is this going to be in the way?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Here, don't give it to me.
- 26:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I'll just move it over here. All right, let's see
- 26:26Speaker 1: your cooking. Let's see.
- 26:29Speaker 2: Just have a bite of it.
- 26:31Speaker 1: I'm going to cut mine. Here, you want to cut yours? Oh,
- 26:36Speaker 1: look how.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Clean that looks. Looks good, right?
- 26:39Speaker 1: Look, I hear them snickering, but I'll tell you, this
- 26:41Speaker 1: sandwich is going to be good, okay?
- 26:43Speaker 2: It's going to be good. I hope it's going to
- 26:45Speaker 2: be good. Matter of fact, I ain't going to cut mine.
- 26:47Speaker 1: We're not second guessing ourselves. It's great. It's amazing.
- 26:50Speaker 2: It's amazing. You ready? On three.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Wait, mine is going to be hot. Yours is going
- 26:53Speaker 1: to be cool. You take a bite. I'll take a...
- 26:56Speaker 1: Look at that cheese gooey. Here we go.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Not bad. Not bad. Could have used a little bit
- 27:04Speaker 2: more flavor. I could have seasoned it a little bit better, but...
- 27:09Speaker 2: A little hickory.
- 27:15Speaker 1: Look, this ain't that bad. I'm just making fun, but
- 27:19Speaker 1: I just had to do it this way, so... Y'all
- 27:22Speaker 1: know he has to stick to the music. Just playing
- 27:24Speaker 1: with you.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It wasn't that bad.
- 27:26Speaker 1: It's good.
- 27:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 27:30Speaker 1: There's a nice charcoal to it.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That was a great egg sandwich, guys. You really can't
- 27:35Speaker 1: mess up an egg sandwich.
- 27:36Speaker 2: You can't. You can't.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Is this your go-to today for breakfast?
- 27:42Speaker 2: No. Why?
- 27:43Speaker 1: Because you're sick of it? Because you ate it so much? Yeah,
- 27:45Speaker 1: I can see that.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:46Speaker 1: What do you eat now for breakfast?
- 27:48Speaker 2: It depends. I ain't gonna lie. I really like avocado toast. Really? Yeah.
- 27:53Speaker 2: A little fruit, a little avocado toast.
- 27:54Speaker 1: Do you make it yourself?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Nah. I pay $ 12 for it every morning. Maybe $ 15,
- 27:59Speaker 2: depending on where you go.
- 28:00Speaker 1: What do they put on it? Do they do that
- 28:02Speaker 1: little everything seasoning on it or something?
- 28:04Speaker 2: Yeah, a little everything seasoning, and then some little type
- 28:05Speaker 2: of hot egg.
- 28:07Speaker 1: Hot honey on it?
- 28:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know what it's called, but it's chili.
- 28:09Speaker 2: It's hot chili. Yeah, it's good.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Do they pop an egg on it?
- 28:12Speaker 2: No, they don't put no egg on it.
- 28:14Speaker 1: And you pay $ 12 for that?
- 28:15Speaker 2: And it gives a little fruit on the side, too. Okay.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It comes all together.
- 28:19Speaker 1: He like every morning, that's what I eat.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Not every morning, but I like that though. They get
- 28:22Speaker 2: me going and keep you straight.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I've been doing a sweet potato waffle.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 28:27Speaker 1: See, look, I'm trying to get your eyes, Kelly. Sweet
- 28:29Speaker 1: potato waffle mini. I do avocado on top.
- 28:32Speaker 2: You make that by yourself?
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, I do it.
- 28:33Speaker 2: You make a sweet potato waffle by yourself?
- 28:36Speaker 1: Let me just tell you guys the hack, okay? Let
- 28:38Speaker 1: me tell you how you do it. You go to Target, Target.
- 28:40Speaker 1: You get the little $ 10 waffle mini press, the little
- 28:43Speaker 1: tiny ones. You get the sweet potato, stab it with
- 28:46Speaker 1: a fork. Pop in the microwave for five minutes, take
- 28:50Speaker 1: it out, pull out the insides, put some butter, salt, pepper,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and I mash it up. I try not to mash
- 28:55Speaker 1: it up too soft, okay? Because if you mash it
- 28:57Speaker 1: up too soft, you're going to mess it up. And
- 28:59Speaker 1: then I'll get pepper jack cheese, the real, not that,
- 29:02Speaker 1: that's not real cheese. And I'll take that same square,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I'll cut it in half.
- 29:06Speaker 2: What's real cheese?
- 29:07Speaker 1: Real cheese, it's a block or it's... I only know
- 29:10Speaker 1: that because when I was pregnant, they said something about
- 29:13Speaker 1: you can or can't eat cheese and they said, don't
- 29:14Speaker 1: eat that. And I was like, why? Yeah. They said,
- 29:16Speaker 1: that's not real cheese. And I said, and that's when
- 29:19Speaker 1: I learned. So that's why. But anyways, I put the
- 29:23Speaker 1: real cheese on the bottom of the waffle so it
- 29:25Speaker 1: creates a crust. And then I put a little sweet
- 29:27Speaker 1: potato on it. And then I put a little cheese
- 29:29Speaker 1: on top, put it in a waffle maker for a
- 29:32Speaker 1: couple minutes. And while that's cooking, I'll fry an egg.
- 29:35Speaker 1: And then I'll do avocado and I'll do pickled onions
- 29:38Speaker 1: on it.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, you going crazy.
- 29:40Speaker 1: That shit good, okay? And then sometimes I'll switch it
- 29:43Speaker 1: up and I'll do egg tacos in the morning and
- 29:45Speaker 1: I'll put goat cheese up in that motherfucker. With some guac.
- 29:49Speaker 2: You know how to cook.
- 29:50Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? I know how to throw that.
- 29:53Speaker 2: You know how to cook.
- 29:57Speaker 1: But no, those are like very easy hacks. But I
- 30:00Speaker 1: like to go into Trader Joe's and sometimes they'll have
- 30:02Speaker 1: jars of random stuff. I like to buy it and
- 30:06Speaker 1: stock up and then I'll play around with the flavors
- 30:09Speaker 1: or whatever. Just anything random.
- 30:11Speaker 2: So that's your background? Before you was doing this, were
- 30:14Speaker 2: you like- I.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Loved cooking shows. I always did. I wanted to do
- 30:18Speaker 1: a teen cooking show when I was, I used to
- 30:20Speaker 1: work with Nick Cannon for a long time. And right
- 30:23Speaker 1: when he ended up in the hospital, we were in
- 30:25Speaker 1: the middle of working on a show. But they didn't like,
- 30:27Speaker 1: some of the people higher up, they changed the direction
- 30:29Speaker 1: of your vision. You'd be like, that's not what I
- 30:31Speaker 1: wanted to do. I'm not doing that. But then I
- 30:34Speaker 1: ended up wanting to do Eating While Broke, which is
- 30:37Speaker 1: where I interview self-made people to inspire other people. And
- 30:41Speaker 1: then that's kind of how it.
- 30:42Speaker 2: No, this is a good show. But it is, I
- 30:44Speaker 2: ain't gonna lie, it is hard to cook.
- 30:45Speaker 1: It's hard as heck, yeah.
- 30:46Speaker 2: And talk, but it was fun. I had a good time.
- 30:48Speaker 2: You did. I'm having a good time.
- 30:49Speaker 1: Oh, I'm glad. And you cook good. Are you going
- 30:51Speaker 1: to eat your whole sandwich?
- 30:52Speaker 2: Probably not. I'm going to eat the bacon, though. I
- 30:58Speaker 2: love turkey bacon.
- 30:59Speaker 1: Yeah, and you didn't cook it as... I don't eat
- 31:02Speaker 1: turkey bacon as much because I feel like I can
- 31:04Speaker 1: never cook it fully to the point where I love it.
- 31:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I just prefer it over the regular bacon. I
- 31:10Speaker 2: do like it, though, a lot.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I like the regular bacon. I just don't eat it.
- 31:12Speaker 2: Yeah. I can't eat it.
- 31:14Speaker 1: I give it to my daughter all the time. She
- 31:16Speaker 1: be like, Mom, make me some bacon.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I miss it, though, but I just can't eat it.
- 31:22Speaker 1: What do you want people to walk away from after
- 31:25Speaker 1: hearing your music? Like knowing about you.
- 31:29Speaker 2: About me or what feeling I want to give? Both.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I just want to, of course, inspire people. I think
- 31:34Speaker 2: that's the goal for all artists is to inspire people.
- 31:38Speaker 2: I think that's like the mark of a great artist
- 31:40Speaker 2: to me. If you watch something you're inspired by, no
- 31:42Speaker 2: matter if it's movies, film, art, I just feel like
- 31:46Speaker 2: that's the goal for me. And what I want them
- 31:48Speaker 2: to know about me is just like I said earlier,
- 31:50Speaker 2: where I come from, where I come from, you're not
- 31:52Speaker 2: afforded a lot of opportunities. Like I said, if you
- 31:55Speaker 2: just stay committed and keep on doing what you got
- 31:57Speaker 2: to do and don't worry about the obstacles and don't
- 32:00Speaker 2: let the flows of life beat you up, then you'll
- 32:02Speaker 2: be straight. Yeah. I think that's my overall message, I think.
- 32:05Speaker 2: At least when I, if you ask me.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I feel like hearing you, that's what I get from you.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Even listening to your music and then also the importance
- 32:15Speaker 1: of stepping outside of your comfort zone as far as
- 32:17Speaker 1: traveling and stuff. How much that builds your confidence too, right?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. And it builds your confidence and then
- 32:22Speaker 2: you walk into these different rooms and you Get to
- 32:25Speaker 2: know yourself more because when you're traveling, you've got to
- 32:26Speaker 2: spend a lot of time with yourself. Even on the airplane,
- 32:29Speaker 2: you're just thinking about so much stuff. Once you get
- 32:30Speaker 2: past the fact that you're next to people that you
- 32:32Speaker 2: probably don't know or whatever, but you get to do
- 32:33Speaker 2: a lot of thinking. You've got to be with yourself
- 32:36Speaker 2: a lot. I hope that helps you get to know
- 32:38Speaker 2: yourself more. I feel like the more you know yourself,
- 32:39Speaker 2: you know this too. The more you know yourself, the
- 32:42Speaker 2: better you'll be.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Now, after experiencing the great New York.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Were you like better New York or low key?
- 32:47Speaker 1: Of course I'm going to say New York.
- 32:48Speaker 2: For real?
- 32:49Speaker 1: Always. Always. If my brother didn't live there, I would try.
- 32:53Speaker 1: I still low key want to buy something over there
- 32:55Speaker 1: property wise. But I'm one of those people with my
- 32:57Speaker 1: little brothers over there.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Like, wow, I got to buy. Yeah.
- 33:00Speaker 1: I'll buy somewhere else. I got LA. I own something here.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I would like to own something in the middle. I
- 33:05Speaker 1: low key been thinking about buying a houseboat out there
- 33:09Speaker 1: in New York. Yeah. Because they got like. Where you
- 33:12Speaker 1: can go 20 minutes in the city. But not about that.
- 33:15Speaker 1: I want to know East versus West. East versus West.
- 33:21Speaker 2: What? I'm going to say West, of course. I know.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I just wanted to see. Even after all our good
- 33:25Speaker 1: pizza and Chinese food.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I've never had no Chinese food out there. That's, oh.
- 33:31Speaker 2: My friend told me, he was like, bro, we got
- 33:32Speaker 2: the best Chinese food out here. I'm like, bro.
- 33:33Speaker 1: We do.
- 33:34Speaker 2: We do.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Even though they have been guests that said we don't. Haters.
- 33:39Speaker 2: I never had no Chinese food out there. I've always had,
- 33:42Speaker 2: I always eat Caribbean food out there, though.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Okay.
- 33:44Speaker 2: There's a spot out there that I like called Miss
- 33:46Speaker 2: Lily's in East Village. I think it's fine.
- 33:47Speaker 1: You like your Caribbean food. You're not Caribbean, though? Nah.
- 33:50Speaker 2: I do love Jamaican food. It's the best. Belgian food.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Listen, and you ended up with the homie of homies.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I did.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Did you get to eat oxtail for free? You know
- 33:57Speaker 1: they always sell out of that stuff?
- 33:59Speaker 2: Yeah. I got to eat. I'm still free. I got
- 34:01Speaker 2: to eat. I got to... I had some pretty good meals.
- 34:03Speaker 1: Listen. Did you ever get the French toast, the cereal
- 34:08Speaker 1: crunch toast?
- 34:08Speaker 2: Look, I was there when it got invented. See?
- 34:12Speaker 1: Let me just tell you something. We have a rule,
- 34:14Speaker 1: I think. It's a silent rule. People know this, that
- 34:17Speaker 1: if you go into a Caribbean restaurant, the ruder they are.
- 34:19Speaker 2: The better.
- 34:20Speaker 1: The better. And when you go to We Jammin', it
- 34:22Speaker 1: be like, what you want?
- 34:25Speaker 2: They're good people, though. They're just back to work.
- 34:27Speaker 1: But yeah, you already know food's great. You can't take
- 34:29Speaker 1: it personal. I've never actually been to a Caribbean place
- 34:31Speaker 1: where they were really nice.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Nah, you can't. If you do, you should leave.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Yeah, you should definitely leave. They like... We know.
- 34:37Speaker 2: What you want?
- 34:38Speaker 1: What you want?
- 34:38Speaker 2: I'm not here to talk to you. What you want?
- 34:39Speaker 1: Yeah, what you want? Large, small? Okay.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Medium, large, small. Bees and rice?
- 34:44Speaker 1: Okay. So you're still going west. Do you think you're
- 34:46Speaker 1: going west because you have to go west?
- 34:49Speaker 2: No, I just feel like the weather is definitely better.
- 34:51Speaker 1: The weather is better. But we get four seasons.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Yeah. And one day, though. Y'all get four seasons in
- 34:57Speaker 2: one day.
- 34:58Speaker 1: No.
- 34:59Speaker 2: Yes. I was out there. It looked like that outside.
- 35:03Speaker 2: The next 30 minutes, it was a thunderstorm. You caught
- 35:07Speaker 2: inside the rain.
- 35:08Speaker 1: I think when you're from there, you go pick up
- 35:10Speaker 1: those days. Those are random days, like during the summer, yes.
- 35:12Speaker 1: But if you live there, certain temperatures when the storm
- 35:15Speaker 1: is coming.
- 35:15Speaker 2: Man, but I don't live there, so I don't know.
- 35:17Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. If it just start raining out
- 35:18Speaker 2: of nowhere and everybody is... I'm talking about it's thundering.
- 35:21Speaker 2: It's actually thundering. It's floods now. Now it's flooded.
- 35:25Speaker 1: If you had to go, okay... East, West, which one's better? People.
- 35:31Speaker 2: West. Okay, food. East. I'll give you that.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Music.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Music?
- 35:41Speaker 1: You can count yourself.
- 35:43Speaker 2: No, I'm just talking about music? Music. Okay, that's tough. Okay,
- 35:47Speaker 2: besides the fact that that kind of invented rap.
- 35:51Speaker 1: Just say it.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Okay, West. West?
- 35:55Speaker 1: You was going to say West? That's what you was
- 35:57Speaker 1: going to say?
- 35:57Speaker 2: You thought I was going to say East? Yeah. We
- 36:00Speaker 2: got Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Tupac, all the legends.
- 36:05Speaker 1: Tupac was originally from New York, though.
- 36:07Speaker 2: He died saying West Side.
- 36:08Speaker 1: Okay. Look, I can't expect a West.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Coast rapper to ever- I'm saying, but that's very close, though.
- 36:14Speaker 1: It's very, very close.
- 36:15Speaker 2: By hair, literally. It's very close.
- 36:16Speaker 1: I don't know about by hair. As long as you
- 36:19Speaker 1: have Jade.
- 36:20Speaker 2: All right. I'll give you that. All right. Cool. I'll
- 36:22Speaker 2: give you that.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Where do you see yourself five years from now?
- 36:25Speaker 2: Hopefully I'm making my first feature film. That's what I
- 36:27Speaker 2: want to really do. So in five years, hopefully. Five
- 36:29Speaker 2: years from now, I at least wrote it. At least
- 36:33Speaker 2: I wrote my major feature film.
- 36:35Speaker 1: And what category would it be in?
- 36:36Speaker 2: I don't know. Probably comedy or horror or drama. Or
- 36:40Speaker 2: maybe a blend of all three. I got an idea
- 36:44Speaker 2: for sure.
- 36:44Speaker 1: Like a scary movie type?
- 36:45Speaker 2: Nah, but like it's serious, but it's just funny. Okay.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I like that.
- 36:49Speaker 2: It's like a little thriller, but it's funny.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I like thrillers.
- 36:52Speaker 2: It's like serious too. Yeah, thrillers. Yeah.
- 36:54Speaker 1: But not horrors.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Yeah, not a horror.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Because when I think horror and comedy, I just think
- 36:58Speaker 1: of the Wayans Brothers.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Nah, but it's like, what about Atlanta or something?
- 37:02Speaker 1: Atlanta, yeah.
- 37:02Speaker 2: I got some horror in it a little bit. Some
- 37:04Speaker 2: little comedy. Do they have horror in it? Yeah, they
- 37:07Speaker 2: just like adventures. They do a little adventures. Like what?
- 37:10Speaker 2: Have you seen that Michael Jackson episode?
- 37:12Speaker 1: No.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I'm just trying.
- 37:13Speaker 1: To tell you.
- 37:14Speaker 2: It's terrifying.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Look it up.
- 37:18Speaker 2: All right.
- 37:18Speaker 1: Tell everybody where they can keep up with everything, bail,
- 37:21Speaker 1: and stay faithful.
- 37:23Speaker 2: And Stay Faithful is out right now on all platforms.
- 37:27Speaker 2: You can find me on Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, Bill, UTL.
- 37:31Speaker 2: And I have a movie premiere coming out August 15th.
- 37:34Speaker 2: You should pull up.
- 37:35Speaker 1: I'll definitely pull up August 15th.
- 37:37Speaker 2: August 15th, right? Oh, sorry. August 14th. August 14th. And
- 37:40Speaker 2: then I have a show on the 15th.
- 37:42Speaker 1: You have a movie coming out?
- 37:43Speaker 2: Yeah, I shot a short film tomorrow.
- 37:45Speaker 1: Oh, you did?
- 37:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Are you in it? Yes. I wrote it and
- 37:50Speaker 2: I directed it.
- 37:51Speaker 1: What's the name of it?
- 37:51Speaker 2: Stay Faithful, the short film. Oh, wow. I want to
- 37:54Speaker 2: pull up August 14th. Okay. Yeah, pull up. All right.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I think you'll enjoy it.
- 37:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I would like that. So this is your first
- 38:02Speaker 1: project in film?
- 38:03Speaker 2: Yeah, it's my first one. Okay.
- 38:05Speaker 1: We look forward to seeing it. Can other people attend.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Or is it closed? You go to. com, purchase you
- 38:09Speaker 2: a ticket, pull up. Yeah.
- 38:11Speaker 1: I love how you're motivating people to stay the course
- 38:14Speaker 1: and pursue their dreams.
- 38:15Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's not a lot. I seen an
- 38:19Speaker 2: interview with A $ AP Rocky one time. Shout out to
- 38:21Speaker 2: East Coast. He was like, when did trying become corny? Like,
- 38:23Speaker 2: why is trying so corny right now? Why are you
- 38:26Speaker 2: mad at somebody for trying? Like, how does that become?
- 38:28Speaker 2: When does giving a fuck become a corny thing to do?
- 38:31Speaker 2: And I feel like if you care too much, people
- 38:34Speaker 2: always perceive it as, you're trying to, are you corny?
- 38:36Speaker 2: But I feel like everybody that try the hardest, they
- 38:38Speaker 2: always get to where they want to go. Are they
- 38:40Speaker 2: not afraid to be like, this is what I want
- 38:42Speaker 2: and be vocal about it? They always get the things
- 38:44Speaker 2: that they want. And I feel like it's easy to
- 38:46Speaker 2: put somebody down because most people are afraid to go
- 38:48Speaker 2: do what they want to do. So I'm like, I'm
- 38:50Speaker 2: here to be like, nah, if you want to go
- 38:51Speaker 2: do some shit, go do it.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I feel like sometimes having ambition is a blessing and
- 38:55Speaker 1: a curse.
- 38:55Speaker 2: It is.
- 38:56Speaker 1: I think when I was little, this is really crazy,
- 38:59Speaker 1: but I used to always say since I was like five,
- 39:01Speaker 1: I'd be like, if I don't make it in life,
- 39:03Speaker 1: I just want to be like a heroin addict so
- 39:05Speaker 1: I don't have to know anything. That I can't. No,
- 39:07Speaker 1: because I grew up in Brooklyn and you grow up
- 39:09Speaker 1: in the street. That's all you get. My parents would
- 39:12Speaker 1: point out, oh, that person over there, they're on crack,
- 39:14Speaker 1: but they were a doctor and they had a family
- 39:16Speaker 1: and they lost it all. Oh, because they tried a cigarette.
- 39:18Speaker 1: I always knew. I always wanted to do stuff. And
- 39:20Speaker 1: I'd be like, man, I don't think that part of
- 39:23Speaker 1: me will ever die. Just the thought of me ever,
- 39:26Speaker 1: when I was younger, the thought of me failing or quitting.
- 39:30Speaker 1: or something was just please let me just end up
- 39:32Speaker 1: on crack where i just don't know i'm so.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Addicted to that chase yeah i can't even like only
- 39:37Speaker 2: way i could quit if i was on crack yeah
- 39:40Speaker 2: if i was just totally effed up.
- 39:42Speaker 1: But that's how painful sometimes pursuing your dreams is and then.
- 39:44Speaker 2: But then you wouldn't be even quitting because now it
- 39:46Speaker 2: wouldn't it's not a dream you'd be pursuing it'd be
- 39:49Speaker 2: the rock Exactly. So you always be chasing something.
- 39:52Speaker 1: Hey, this is what I say when I was like
- 39:54Speaker 1: young though. But I do think that people look at
- 39:57Speaker 1: people once they hit their dreams, they'd be like, oh,
- 39:59Speaker 1: that was luck or there was something else.
- 40:01Speaker 2: Nah, hell nah.
- 40:01Speaker 1: There's not enough talk about that. Nah.
- 40:04Speaker 2: Luck is obviously involved in it. It plays a role, yeah.
- 40:07Speaker 1: But I think luck usually comes in when you're prepared.
- 40:09Speaker 1: When you're just doing it then.
- 40:10Speaker 2: When it's the momentum you have. 100%. It's the momentum.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I tell people that all the time. People, I'll say, hey,
- 40:14Speaker 1: I want to do this project. They'll be like, did
- 40:16Speaker 1: you lock in distribution? Did you lock in this?
- 40:18Speaker 2: I'm like, I don't know.
- 40:18Speaker 1: God just blesses me if I just keep working at it.
- 40:21Speaker 1: A fairy comes along and somehow the shit works out
- 40:24Speaker 1: every time.
- 40:25Speaker 2: That's his favorite saying. Yeah, it's going to work out.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Don't worry about it. It's all going to work out.
- 40:29Speaker 1: I like that attitude.
- 40:30Speaker 2: That's his favorite. Don't worry about nothing. It's all going
- 40:33Speaker 2: to work out. He say that all the time.
- 40:34Speaker 1: I like that.
- 40:35Speaker 2: Sometimes I'd be like, man, shut up. Right.
- 40:41Speaker 1: It does. And I think that brings that energy more
- 40:44Speaker 1: when you just know what's going to work itself out.
- 40:46Speaker 1: It kind of like eliminates your second guessing. But I
- 40:48Speaker 1: also think that comes with age.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Yeah. So he's just wise. That's what it is. He's
- 40:52Speaker 2: just numb. He probably older too.
- 40:54Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 40:55Speaker 2: Is he older?
- 40:56Speaker 1: He not older than you?
- 40:56Speaker 2: No.
- 40:57Speaker 1: He's younger?
- 40:57Speaker 2: I don't know. You got to ask him. What?
- 41:00Speaker 1: Okay. But I think, I sometimes think it comes with
- 41:03Speaker 1: being older. You just kind of get used to the
- 41:05Speaker 1: ups and the downs or whatever. But maybe not. Maybe not. Okay.
