Transcript
- This is the New Realm Compliance Brief, Volume One, Edition Forty-Three, for Friday, September Twenty-Fifth. Our top story: the United States import ban on most Canadian alcoholic beverages takes effect Monday, September Twenty-Ninth, at one minute past midnight Eastern. The prohibition, issued September Ninth under Section Three Thirty-Eight of the Tariff Act in response to Canadian provincial restrictions on American alcohol, covers beer produced in Canada and shipped in bottles, cans, kegs, and other finished packages, regardless of who owns the brand. Bulk beer shipped for packaging in the United States is exempt from the ban but still carries a fifty percent tariff, and non-alcoholic beer is excluded. The Brewers Association said importers should confirm production location, packaging format, and entry timing with customs brokers, because shipments sent before the deadline can still be barred if they enter afterward. In Washington, Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina filed an amendment to a college sports bill that would prohibit name, image, and likeness deals with student athletes that promote alcohol, marijuana, gambling, or tobacco. Around the states: Nebraska's attorney general said he will not keep challenging the state's voter-approved medical cannabis law after losing at the state supreme court, clearing the way for licensing to proceed. Separately, his office subpoenaed a Colorado dispensary near the Nebraska border over its marketing and operations, and the company is resisting in court. Florida regulators proposed new background screening rules for cannabis business owners and employees. On the radar: the federal hemp redefinition takes effect December Eleventh, with Missouri's own restrictions starting November Twelfth, and Virginia is expected to open feedback on its draft adult-use retail rules in late October.
