- 0:01Why do we not immediately recognize the existence and
- 0:04centrality of the soul? We tend to set our standpoint in
- 0:08the external consciousness, which is directed outwards and
- 0:12which is constantly receiving sense impressions and pressures
- 0:16impinging on our body, life, mind, complex.
- 0:20The sense organs, nervous system, and brain are wired to
- 0:24respond to impressions from these external forces, and are
- 0:28not either directed toward nor tuned to perceive the subtle
- 0:33energetic action of the inner being and the soul, the inmost
- 0:38being. Similarly, the external senses
- 0:42do not directly perceive the superconscient spiritual
- 0:45energies that impinge upon us, and thus may try to deny that
- 0:50they exist. It is very simple, however, to
- 0:54recognize the error of this conclusion.
- 0:57Just because we cannot perceive something directly with our mind
- 1:01and senses, it does not mean that the those things do not
- 1:05exist. We do not perceive gravity,
- 1:09radiation, or electricity with our senses directly, but we are
- 1:14clearly able to recognize the effects of these forces.
- 1:19We also cannot perceive and measure directly the impulses
- 1:23that we call love, physical attraction, mutual chemistry, or
- 1:29the mechanisms that help create these things, such as the
- 1:33secretion of pheromones. When we turn our view inwards
- 1:38and quiet the promptings of the external senses and the physical
- 1:42mind, we can begin to experience and appreciate more directly and
- 1:47consistently the inner physical, the inner vital, the inner
- 1:52mental, and the inner soul aspects of our being.
- 1:57With Tapasya, we can understand the causative role that the ever
- 2:02more subtle aspects of our existence plays upon the more
- 2:05gross external aspects of the being.
- 2:09The soul or psychic being is the subtle and central causative
- 2:14link between the spiritual existence and our external
- 2:18being. We can certainly appreciate the
- 2:22effect of the soul, even if we cannot measure it with our
- 2:26external senses. Shriorobindo defines the forces
- 2:31that constitute the soul, forces that we can appreciate in their
- 2:35expression. Forces of truth, forces of
- 2:39beauty, forces of harmony, all stem from the action of the
- 2:43soul. The more influence it has on the
- 2:47external being, the more we tend to align our appreciation and
- 2:52action to resonate to these forces of coherence and
- 2:55harmonious development, and the more we tend to reject and
- 2:59eliminate those forces that bring forth disharmony, chaos,
- 3:04and falsehood. Sriorobindo writes, Quote At the
- 3:10beginning, the soul and Nature, the psychic entity whose
- 3:14unfolding is the first step towards a spiritual change, is
- 3:18an entirely veiled part of us, although it is that by which we
- 3:22exist and persist as individual beings in nature, the other
- 3:28parts of our natural composition are not only mutable but
- 3:32perishable. But the psychic entity in US
- 3:35persists and is fundamentally the same always.
- 3:40It contains all essential possibilities of our
- 3:43manifestation, but is not constituted by them.
- 3:48It is not limited by what it manifests, not contained by the
- 3:52incomplete forms of the manifestation, not tarnished by
- 3:57the imperfections and impurities, the defects and
- 4:00deprivations of the surface being.
- 4:03It is an ever pure flame of the divinity in things, and nothing
- 4:08that comes to it. Nothing that enters into our
- 4:11experience can pollute its purity or extinguish the flame.
- 4:18This spiritual stuff is Immaculate and luminous, and
- 4:22because it is perfectly luminous, it is immediately,
- 4:26intimately directly aware of truth of being and truth of
- 4:31nature. It is deeply conscious of truth
- 4:35and good and beauty, because truth and good and beauty are
- 4:40akin to its own native character forms of something that is
- 4:44inherent in its own substance. It is aware also of all that
- 4:50contradicts these things, of all that deviates from its own
- 4:53native character of falsehood and evil and the ugly and the
- 4:58unseemly. But it does not become these
- 5:01things, nor is it touched or changed by these opposites of
- 5:05itself, which so powerfully affect its outer instrumentation
- 5:10of mind, life and body. For the soul, the permanent
- 5:15being in US puts forth and uses mind, life and body as its
- 5:21instruments, undergoes the envelopment of their conditions.
- 5:25But it is other and greater than its members.
