- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:13Speaker 2: My name is Beaumont E.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Jones.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Thanks for listening wherever you get your podcasts. Thanks for
- 0:16Speaker 2: watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 0:20Speaker 2: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 0:23Speaker 2: I'm inclined to.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Believe you are a hater.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It is Time Machine Tuesday coming to us live from Oakland,
- 0:30Speaker 2: California in the Wrangler. Well, Oakland enough. He from Oakland.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Oakland come with him everywhere he go. Check out the
- 0:36Speaker 2: real ones. Logan Murdoch, what's going on?
- 0:38Speaker 1: Man, I'm just slow motion with the potion trying to
- 0:40Speaker 1: get to the ocean, Bo. You know how it go.
- 0:42Speaker 1: You know the vibes. We miss you out here, man.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You need to come through. We need to take you
- 0:47Speaker 1: a flight out to the bay, man.
- 0:49Speaker 3: Dude, I need to.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I haven't been to the bay since 2009. It's been
- 0:54Speaker 2: that long.
- 0:55Speaker 1: That is a damn shame. When you come to the bay,
- 0:58Speaker 1: I'm picking you up from the airport, and we are
- 1:00Speaker 1: going to drive around Lake Merritt for about 15 minutes.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yo, Lake Mary changed my whole idea of the Bay.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Like when I got there and the first thing little
- 1:08Speaker 2: mama did, we went ahead, uh, we had lunch in
- 1:10Speaker 2: San Francisco. Cause I flew in the SFO. We had
- 1:12Speaker 2: lunch in San Francisco and she pulled up, she lived over.
- 1:15Speaker 3: By the lake. And I was like, Oh, I ain't
- 1:16Speaker 3: even know y'all had one of these. You know what
- 1:18Speaker 3: I'm saying? And the weather was right.
- 1:19Speaker 1: And I was like, I'll get my haircut on a,
- 1:22Speaker 1: on a, I'll just say it. I get my haircut
- 1:24Speaker 1: on 14th and, um, and Oak. And every time I
- 1:29Speaker 1: drive back home, I make sure I get a little
- 1:30Speaker 1: bit of the lake on the way there, man. I
- 1:32Speaker 1: play picture me rolling. I play checkout time. I just
- 1:34Speaker 1: get in the zone. I probably called you a couple
- 1:37Speaker 1: of times during that drive.
- 1:39Speaker 3: You know, just it's appreciated, man.
- 1:42Speaker 2: We got you here talking about some from the base
- 1:44Speaker 2: time machine Tuesday and.
- 1:47Speaker 3: We're talking about the 2016 Golden State Warriors, 10 years ago.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Now, I need to let people know, we're basically doing
- 1:52Speaker 2: like a series over the next few weeks on the Warriors,
- 1:55Speaker 2: because we got like three different things to talk about
- 1:58Speaker 2: involving this run of the Warriors. Logan was around that team,
- 2:03Speaker 2: working for the Mercury News.
- 2:05Speaker 1: I was working at Canby already. I had a little
- 2:07Speaker 1: bit of internships around there. I was around college around
- 2:10Speaker 1: that time, and then I got to the Mercury News.
- 2:13Speaker 3: You were around this team. And look, man, just growing
- 2:15Speaker 3: up in Oakland, like the Warriors... Even when the Warriors
- 2:18Speaker 3: were sorry, the Warriors were a thing, right? Oh, my God.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Absolutely, man. That's the most.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Amazing thing is how much Warriors fans cared about the
- 2:26Speaker 2: Warriors in spite of the Warriors.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, they were just kind of omnipresence, and
- 2:30Speaker 1: they were just rich dudes in downtown. Like, you would
- 2:32Speaker 1: hear about, you know, Steven Jackson being at the Louisiana
- 2:36Speaker 1: Fish Market, you know, down the street from my house.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Or you hear about a such-and-such player that's seven feet
- 2:41Speaker 1: tall getting robbed, you know? Or you would hear, or
- 2:45Speaker 1: you would see, like, the We Believe Warriors always talk
- 2:47Speaker 1: about or the last Oakland Warriors team, right, where their
- 2:52Speaker 1: community events were going to Eastmont Mall and going to
- 2:57Speaker 1: the McDonald's there and passing out Big Macs to fans, right?
- 3:01Speaker 1: And that will never happen now. That's not going to happen.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It was just a different time.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Also, it was a very particular collection of dudes that
- 3:09Speaker 2: fit the idea of playing in Oakland. So that's Baron Davis,
- 3:13Speaker 2: that's Steven Jackson, that's Matt Barnes.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Al Harrington.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Monte Ellis.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Oh, Monte was on that team. Jason Richardson.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Jason Richardson. Then you have Don Nelson, who loved to
- 3:26Speaker 1: play shuffleboard over there by the Grand Lake Theater, and
- 3:28Speaker 1: that would be his initiation for the team, which is like,
- 3:30Speaker 1: let's get drunk and let's go play shuffleboard.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But that squad, I feel like for somebody my age,
- 3:38Speaker 2: there's three distinct periods of Warriors basketball.
- 3:41Speaker 3: It's really kind of four, right?
- 3:43Speaker 2: It is the run TMC era, like the first Don
- 3:45Speaker 2: Nelson era, where they just, hey, man, just kind of
- 3:47Speaker 2: having a good time.
- 3:48Speaker 3: Looking back on it.
- 3:49Speaker 2: A little bit ahead of where the game was going.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Had that one year, I think they beat the Spurs
- 3:55Speaker 2: in the first round, where they were the seventh seed,
- 3:57Speaker 2: and the Spurs were the two seeds. You got Chris Mullen,
- 4:00Speaker 2: Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway. It was a fun squad. Honorable mention...
- 4:09Speaker 2: Only because of that one thing that happened when, you know,
- 4:12Speaker 2: Sprewell choked out PJ Carlissimo. Like, that whole team wasn't
- 4:15Speaker 2: really an era. It was the end of Run TMC and,
- 4:19Speaker 2: you know.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Hey, don't forget the team before me and you both
- 4:22Speaker 1: were born or in the 70s where they did win
- 4:24Speaker 1: some championships.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Yeah, where you had a coach that was ready to
- 4:27Speaker 3: fight everybody.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Yes, exactly.
- 4:29Speaker 2: Your coach's nickname is The Destroyer. That's the greatest nickname.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Al Adels, The Destroyer. Rest in peace, Al Adels, Bay
- 4:37Speaker 2: Area legend. Y'all love that man.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Love him. Every time in my first couple of years
- 4:41Speaker 1: covering a team on full-time, Al Adels would actually sit
- 4:44Speaker 1: next to the press area. So you would see him
- 4:46Speaker 1: every time. He had his own seat above one of
- 4:48Speaker 1: the tunnels. And everybody would kind of get some wisdom
- 4:51Speaker 1: from him. The security people knew who he was. He
- 4:54Speaker 1: was always a G with it. Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 3: But then you had the We Believe Warriors.
- 4:59Speaker 2: And then the Mark Jackson Warriors, I think, are important
- 5:03Speaker 2: to talk about in this.
- 5:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 3: The Warriors have been so bad for so long.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Missed the playoffs, I forget how many straight years, you know,
- 5:12Speaker 2: how many years out of how many, because they made
- 5:14Speaker 2: the playoffs that year in 07, obviously. But wrapping around that,
- 5:17Speaker 2: it wasn't no playoffs, man. Christmas missed us over and
- 5:20Speaker 2: over again for what was going on there. Mark Jackson
- 5:23Speaker 2: got there, and that team got better than, honestly, most
- 5:26Speaker 2: people expected it to get at any point. Like, the
- 5:30Speaker 2: early Mark Jackson days, I think it's easy to forget now.
- 5:32Speaker 3: This was like, hey, get a load of the Warriors.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Look at them being good.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, well... So Mark Jackson, if I believe,
- 5:39Speaker 1: if I'm correct, he got hired in 2011 because he
- 5:42Speaker 1: replaced Keith Smart, who replaced Don Nelson. And as this
- 5:46Speaker 1: is going on, you have Steph, who gets drafted in 2009.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And then you have the, then you get Klay Thompson,
- 5:52Speaker 1: who is drafted a couple of years later. And then
- 5:54Speaker 1: you have the defining draft of the Golden State Warriors
- 5:58Speaker 1: in 2012, where you get Harrison Barnes, you get Festus Azili,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and you get Draymond Green, right? So all of this
- 6:03Speaker 1: is happening under the eyes of Mark Jackson, who kind
- 6:06Speaker 1: of just like, sees the talent on this and says, okay,
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm going to make them believe that they can be,
- 6:12Speaker 1: you know, better than they think they can be right now.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Steph's coming off the ankle injuries and they're kind of
- 6:17Speaker 1: trying to find themselves. And early on, you know, Mark
- 6:21Speaker 1: Jackson would just say these things where it's like, are
- 6:23Speaker 1: you sure? Like he would say like Steph and Claire,
- 6:25Speaker 1: the best backcourt of all time, right. Before that, they've
- 6:28Speaker 1: actually have done real damage in the playoffs.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And, but you're starting to see little itty bitty things, right.
- 6:34Speaker 1: You're starting to see. And as that's happening, The team
- 6:37Speaker 1: is starting to get built. Andrew Bogut gets traded for.
- 6:40Speaker 1: They trade Monte for Monte Ellis, who was a real
- 6:44Speaker 1: pillar in the community. And I've gotten into some trouble
- 6:48Speaker 1: that you guys can go Google, but he gets traded
- 6:52Speaker 1: for Andrew Bogut. And then, you know, Andre Guadalla and
- 6:58Speaker 1: after 2013 signs with the team. And you're starting to
- 7:02Speaker 1: see this championship roster kind of come into fold. And
- 7:05Speaker 1: in a lot of ways, Mark Jackson was the coach
- 7:08Speaker 1: that helped not only galvanize his team, but show them
- 7:11Speaker 1: they can get to the postseason. And what you see
- 7:13Speaker 1: from a lot of coaches are teams go in steps, right?
- 7:18Speaker 1: Different coaches are needed for different types of teams. And
- 7:22Speaker 1: Mark Jackson was needed for the type of team that
- 7:24Speaker 1: needed to figure themselves out, but also know that they
- 7:27Speaker 1: can go into the big stage. Now, was he the
- 7:29Speaker 1: coach necessarily to Um, once they get to the big stage,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you know, get them to winning and being contender status.
- 7:37Speaker 1: One will never know, but the jury is probably not.
- 7:40Speaker 1: And that's how you get to Steve Kerr. But Mark
- 7:44Speaker 1: Jackson was a pivotal point. And if you ask anybody
- 7:47Speaker 1: within the Warriors organization, at least the players, the organization
- 7:50Speaker 1: on the front office didn't like him. But talk to Draymond,
- 7:53Speaker 1: talk to Clay, you talk to anybody that's with that
- 7:56Speaker 1: or as a foundational player, they will go back and say,
- 7:59Speaker 1: we're not here without Mark Jackson.
- 8:01Speaker 2: So I think the part that Mark doesn't get enough
- 8:04Speaker 2: credit for, because the primary criticism of him when he
- 8:08Speaker 2: coached the Warriors, aside from, you know, some of the
- 8:12Speaker 2: way that he brought his Jesus with him to work,
- 8:15Speaker 2: was that his offense was a bit antiquated, right? Like
- 8:19Speaker 2: a lot of mid post work for Harrison Barnes and
- 8:21Speaker 2: all that. But I think this is where Mark, where
- 8:23Speaker 2: he deserves some credit. Number one, He called it as
- 8:25Speaker 2: soon as he got that job. He said he had
- 8:27Speaker 2: the best shooting backcourt in the history of the NBA,
- 8:29Speaker 2: and we thought that that was hyperbole, and none of
- 8:31Speaker 2: us can come up with the number two answer at
- 8:33Speaker 2: this point. We would all agree that the Splash Brothers
- 8:36Speaker 2: didn't have a name yet before Mark Jackson got there.
- 8:40Speaker 3: I think he gets credit there.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Number two, and I think it's important, his first year
- 8:44Speaker 2: coaching them, Steph– that was the year Steph was hurt.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Steph only played 28 minutes a game, but he shot
- 8:50Speaker 2: 4.73s per game. That second year with Mark Jackson– He
- 8:54Speaker 2: shot 7.7 threes per game the next year, 7.9. Those
- 8:59Speaker 2: numbers are dwarfed a bit by where they ultimately became,
- 9:02Speaker 2: but that was the beginning of expanding the paradigm of
- 9:06Speaker 2: how much people shot threes.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Courage just took it crazy, right?
- 9:09Speaker 2: Like, When we get to 2016, now he's taking 11
- 9:11Speaker 2: threes a game, right? Like now we're at something else,
- 9:14Speaker 2: but it's easy to forget that Steph Curry was leading
- 9:16Speaker 2: the league in three-pointers attempted before that, right?
- 9:19Speaker 3: Mark Jackson made.
- 9:20Speaker 2: The decision that, hey, we got a guy that is
- 9:22Speaker 2: a superstar caliber player, makes second team all NBA in
- 9:26Speaker 2: Mark's last year there, right? The thing that happened that
- 9:28Speaker 2: last year, though, I don't know exactly what happened. Joe
- 9:31Speaker 2: Lacob hated his guts. And I didn't have to be
- 9:34Speaker 2: around the team to see that. I just had to
- 9:36Speaker 2: watch games and see Joe Lacob sitting courtside. And he
- 9:41Speaker 2: hated Mark Jackson so much that he would just shake
- 9:43Speaker 2: his head at him.
- 9:44Speaker 3: What is he doing? Yeah. But Mark Jackson also had
- 9:48Speaker 3: that wild shit where.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Darren Ehrman was working as a spy and recording stuff
- 9:53Speaker 2: and taking it back to other people. that Mark Jackson
- 9:56Speaker 2: had to fire. I mean, it was it was chaos
- 9:59Speaker 2: around him. Like the reason why Jackson does not have
- 10:00Speaker 2: another job is that stuff. Right. Like he was a
- 10:03Speaker 2: pretty good basketball coach who existed in a world of
- 10:07Speaker 2: paranoid chaos, but also made that basketball team better.
- 10:11Speaker 1: Yeah, there was that. There was like an extortion, too. Yes,
- 10:13Speaker 1: there was. There's a funny story.
- 10:15Speaker 3: A fake-ass man of God.
- 10:16Speaker 1: Yeah, there was a funny story, speaking of being a
- 10:19Speaker 1: man of God, of like where they, I think it
- 10:23Speaker 1: was one of the Clippers series. I think it was
- 10:25Speaker 1: the Clippers series, but they were in L.A. Let's just
- 10:27Speaker 1: say they were in L.A. And Mark Jackson brought the
- 10:29Speaker 1: whole team to his church. And there's a famous story
- 10:33Speaker 1: where Hilton Armstrong gets saved. And he is, I don't
- 10:38Speaker 1: want to say necessarily like hallucinating, but like, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: everybody who's been to a black church know what we're
- 10:42Speaker 1: talking about. But he was in the parking lot just
- 10:44Speaker 1: basically with Jesus in his soul and basically like sprouting
- 10:49Speaker 1: out hymns. And that was one of the, that's the
- 10:52Speaker 1: famous story that gets told about a lot in the
- 10:57Speaker 1: bowels of both Oracle and Chase Center to this day. So,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I mean, there was a lot of... He got them,
- 11:03Speaker 1: let's say, Mark Jackson got them to a point, but
- 11:05Speaker 1: at a certain point it would be like, at what cost?
- 11:08Speaker 1: And they had to get somebody in there, the Warriors did,
- 11:12Speaker 1: who can kind of like professionalize a little bit, and
- 11:14Speaker 1: that's where we get to Steve Kerr. Yeah, let us.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Not forget, in the season of chaos for the Los
- 11:23Speaker 2: Angeles Clippers in 2014, when they won that first round
- 11:28Speaker 2: series in a game seven, That was the last game
- 11:32Speaker 2: that Mark Jackson coached.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Where the Clippers are.
- 11:34Speaker 2: Going out, where inside out, inside out warmups and everything
- 11:40Speaker 2: else and all that went down.
- 11:41Speaker 1: And the leg of the Donald Sterling tapes, the TMZ,
- 11:43Speaker 1: Donald Sterling tapes. Yeah.
- 11:44Speaker 5: Yes.
- 11:45Speaker 3: All of that stuff.
- 11:46Speaker 2: That was the last game Mark Jackson coach. And when
- 11:49Speaker 2: they hired Steve Kerr, I think it's easy to forget
- 11:52Speaker 2: that it did not look good.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Steve Kerr had been doing TV at the time. And
- 11:59Speaker 2: my humble opinion, wasn't very good at all right joe
- 12:03Speaker 2: lakob was asked why he hired steve kerr or how
- 12:07Speaker 2: he got to know steve kerr and he said he
- 12:09Speaker 2: got to know him while playing golf so this black
- 12:14Speaker 2: man who had just got your team up to 50
- 12:17Speaker 2: wins a team whose best player at the time was
- 12:21Speaker 2: stephen curry in the way that we viewed stephen curry
- 12:24Speaker 2: at the time right you're telling us that these warriors
- 12:27Speaker 2: who have been terrible For the better part of two decades,
- 12:32Speaker 2: you are saying the coach that got them to 50
- 12:34Speaker 2: wins and after three years consistently won more games, you're
- 12:38Speaker 2: telling us that this team isn't good enough? And you
- 12:41Speaker 2: not only need a new coach, you need a new
- 12:43Speaker 2: coach that's never coached before.
- 12:45Speaker 3: And by the way, that you're.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Paying $ 5 million a year to take the job. And
- 12:50Speaker 2: that was so controversial that the Knicks hired Derek Fisher.
- 12:55Speaker 3: To coach them.
- 12:57Speaker 2: And they had to give him $ 5 million a year.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Yep. I would like to add to that too, right?
- 13:03Speaker 1: Because there, there are a few things also Steve Kerr
- 13:06Speaker 1: failed general manager at the time of the, of the
- 13:08Speaker 1: Phoenix suns, his, his crowning achievement. I wouldn't even call
- 13:11Speaker 1: it achievement, his crowning moment as the Phoenix suns GM
- 13:15Speaker 1: was trading for Shaq when the game was going completely
- 13:18Speaker 1: the other way, um, a deal he regrets. And then
- 13:22Speaker 1: also this is, This team, the Golden State Warriors, were
- 13:26Speaker 1: about a month removed from considering to strike because of
- 13:31Speaker 1: the Donald Sterling racism. Right. And you you see that.
- 13:35Speaker 1: And also, by the way, this is the locker room.
- 13:38Speaker 1: Forget what the front office thinks. The locker room loved
- 13:40Speaker 1: Mark Jackson. Like they loved who he was and they
- 13:43Speaker 1: loved what he had done for them. And kind of
- 13:46Speaker 1: have thorough brows after he got he got let go,
- 13:48Speaker 1: even though the writing was kind of on the wall
- 13:49Speaker 1: that he was going to be let go just like
- 13:52Speaker 1: weeks before. And then you put in Steve Kerr, who
- 13:55Speaker 1: is not proven as a coach whatsoever and then has
- 13:59Speaker 1: everything that you have that you have just described. And
- 14:01Speaker 1: he's already been a failed general manager. Right. And so
- 14:03Speaker 1: it was it was a lot of things that were
- 14:05Speaker 1: going against Steve at the time. We did not see
- 14:08Speaker 1: what we're about to talk about on the horizon at all.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah, there was it was it was I was. I
- 14:16Speaker 4: was one of the many people that was like, come on.
- 14:18Speaker 4: And one other thing, it looked like the team had
- 14:19Speaker 4: hit a ceiling with Mark Jackson. And not necessarily we
- 14:23Speaker 4: didn't think it was Mark Jackson's fault, but it seemed like, OK,
- 14:25Speaker 4: this is a fun team.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Right. They got to the second round in 2013 and
- 14:29Speaker 1: then they kind of then they they lost in the
- 14:32Speaker 1: first round. in 2014, we're like, is this just what
- 14:34Speaker 1: the team is? Like, is this going to be a fun,
- 14:37Speaker 1: exciting team that just loses in the first round? That
- 14:39Speaker 1: was kind of what we thought this was going to be.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Like Don Nelson, basically, right?
- 14:44Speaker 2: But there was nothing in NBA history to indicate a
- 14:47Speaker 2: team that was constructed as that team was constructed was anything.
- 14:52Speaker 3: More than a fun team that was going to lose early.
- 14:55Speaker 2: And they bring Kerr in and Kerr's there. And I
- 14:59Speaker 2: think the most interesting thing that happens with this team
- 15:03Speaker 2: David Lee gets hurt. And look, David Lee had been
- 15:07Speaker 2: an NBA all-star. It's kind of interesting to think about
- 15:10Speaker 2: what they would have been with David Lee because of
- 15:12Speaker 2: his skills, right? His ability to shoot and everything else.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But they put Draymond Green in as a starter, something
- 15:17Speaker 2: that nobody, an idea that no one had entertained up
- 15:20Speaker 2: until that point, right? Like he was a, hey, well,
- 15:22Speaker 2: he was an excellent college player and an excellent college
- 15:25Speaker 2: player in the mold of guys that you call excellent
- 15:27Speaker 2: college players, right?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Right.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Maybe let's see, maybe this will be something.
- 15:33Speaker 2: And they jumped out in 2015 or 2014, 2015 on fire,
- 15:39Speaker 2: on fire.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Like just, I just want to take a moment to
- 15:41Speaker 1: just talk about Draymond green for, for a second. Right?
- 15:44Speaker 1: Like he has the career at Michigan state. He under
- 15:48Speaker 1: Mark Jackson, he's kind of him pecked because of the
- 15:51Speaker 1: David Lee stuff. He's kind of just basically like, we're
- 15:54Speaker 1: just going to be, you're a great defender. We're going
- 15:56Speaker 1: to put you on Kobe. We're going to put you
- 15:57Speaker 1: on LeBron. And that's kind of just what you are. Right.
- 15:59Speaker 1: And then, something happens. He has a couple big games
- 16:02Speaker 1: in the 13 playoffs, but in the 14 playoffs, he
- 16:05Speaker 1: really kind of builds confidence in himself. Not to say
- 16:08Speaker 1: he lacked confidence because Bo, this is a guy that
- 16:10Speaker 1: told his veteran, Jeremy Tyler, that you are, I am
- 16:14Speaker 1: no longer your rook. You are not worthy enough to
- 16:17Speaker 1: beat my veteran. That's what he says when he gets drafted.
- 16:19Speaker 1: So he's a different kind of dude, but he, during
- 16:22Speaker 1: that Clippers series, he kind of finds himself and he tells,
- 16:26Speaker 1: he tells this famous story about how he told his,
- 16:28Speaker 1: his shoe rep, Adrian Staley, like, They don't know what
- 16:31Speaker 1: they got. They don't know what they got. And there's
- 16:34Speaker 1: all of this pent up anger because, you know, he
- 16:37Speaker 1: from a child in Michigan when, you know, he's at
- 16:39Speaker 1: the rec center and he's telling people are telling him
- 16:41Speaker 1: he can't be on the floor. He has to earn
- 16:43Speaker 1: his way on the floor at the rec center in Saginaw. Then,
- 16:46Speaker 1: you know, he has the Michigan State career. But then,
- 16:50Speaker 1: you know, even Steph like had some like, who is
- 16:52Speaker 1: this dude? Energy towards Draymond when he gets into the
- 16:56Speaker 1: locker room and then he has to prove himself all
- 16:58Speaker 1: over again. And then when he's about to get his
- 17:01Speaker 1: new deal or try to fight for a new deal,
- 17:03Speaker 1: he has a new coach. So he has a huge
- 17:05Speaker 1: monumental chip on his shoulder going into this 14-15 season
- 17:08Speaker 1: that kind of manifests as David Lee is hurt, and
- 17:12Speaker 1: he kind of goes into the fold.
- 17:13Speaker 2: They started the season 21-2. 21-2, and I'm looking at
- 17:20Speaker 2: it right now. These games weren't really that close. No.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Like they, everything is like, what is going on? And
- 17:28Speaker 3: do not.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Forget what the big story was going into that season.
- 17:33Speaker 2: LeBron went back to Cleveland and then they went and
- 17:35Speaker 2: got Kevin Love. Like, the story was supposed to be
- 17:39Speaker 2: Miami took... LeBron took the show from Miami, got to Cleveland.
- 17:43Speaker 2: They immediately got their own big three situation. Everything that
- 17:47Speaker 2: was supposed to matter was supposed to matter with that team.
- 17:49Speaker 2: And suddenly it was all.
- 17:50Speaker 3: About the Warriors.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Like, what we thought LeBron and Cleveland was going to
- 17:54Speaker 2: be never really happened.
- 17:56Speaker 3: And it was.
- 17:56Speaker 2: And look, those teams went to the finals four times.
- 17:58Speaker 2: They won a championship. We'll talk about, you know, at
- 18:00Speaker 2: another point.
- 18:01Speaker 1: But.
- 18:02Speaker 3: This was not supposed to be about the Warriors like this.
- 18:04Speaker 2: It very rarely in the NBA does a dynasty emerge
- 18:07Speaker 2: from nowhere.
- 18:09Speaker 3: This one felt like it was from nowhere.
- 18:11Speaker 2: And it was because there was an entire shifting paradigm
- 18:14Speaker 2: of how to play basketball. Like Steve Kerr, Mike D'Antoni
- 18:18Speaker 2: got in the Hall of Fame for the influence of
- 18:20Speaker 2: the seven seconds or less era. Steve Kerr took that
- 18:23Speaker 2: and went to a whole nother place. And I think
- 18:26Speaker 2: changed basketball even more.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think. It's funny. I'm going to make a
- 18:32Speaker 1: Bo Manny type of comparison where I go all the
- 18:34Speaker 1: way this way and then come back to the point.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But I think one of the people that I'm listening
- 18:38Speaker 1: to right now and somebody I've been trying to get
- 18:40Speaker 1: you to listen to for a long time is Larry June.
- 18:42Speaker 1: And the reason why I like Larry June is because
- 18:44Speaker 1: he's an amalgamation of a whole bunch of different types
- 18:46Speaker 1: of rappers that we love. Like he sounds like Mac
- 18:49Speaker 1: Dre one day. He sounds like Warren G one day.
- 18:51Speaker 1: He has a little short in him, has a little
- 18:53Speaker 1: jacka in him, has a little 40 in him, has
- 18:54Speaker 1: a little short in him, right? And I think about
- 18:57Speaker 1: that with Steve Kerr, right, where he has– a little
- 18:59Speaker 1: bit of Greg Popovich in him, has a little bit
- 19:01Speaker 1: of Phil Jackson in him, has D'Antoni in him, has
- 19:04Speaker 1: all of these little bits of influences in him. One
- 19:07Speaker 1: of the things that he says that he did going
- 19:10Speaker 1: into this 14-15 season was he just studied every type
- 19:13Speaker 1: of coach in all of their sets. He studied Brad Stevens'
- 19:17Speaker 1: after-timeout sets. He studied the philosophy of Phil Jackson and
- 19:21Speaker 1: how he can update some of the intricacies of the
- 19:23Speaker 1: triangle offense. He learned a lot from Pop. And he
- 19:26Speaker 1: kind of brought that into this type of free-flowing team.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And also, if you go look back, it's so funny
- 19:32Speaker 1: to look back at the commentary of that 14-15 team
- 19:36Speaker 1: because nobody really knew how to talk about them because
- 19:38Speaker 1: we had never seen it before, right? It's a team
- 19:41Speaker 1: centered around a small guard who doesn't really have a
- 19:44Speaker 1: traditional big. They did in Bogut, but like he wasn't
- 19:48Speaker 1: the guy, the actual guy. Right. This is a time
- 19:50Speaker 1: when Dwight Howard is coming into the fold. And that's
- 19:52Speaker 1: like a pendulum swing when he goes from the Lakers
- 19:55Speaker 1: to the Rockets. Right. And so we don't really know
- 19:57Speaker 1: how to talk about this team. Yeah, they're winning. But yeah,
- 20:00Speaker 1: Chuck is saying they can't win because they're a jump
- 20:02Speaker 1: shooting team was completely misses the point of what this
- 20:05Speaker 1: team was. They get a lot of shit for just
- 20:08Speaker 1: being a shooting team. But the real thing that they
- 20:10Speaker 1: were great at was just being a versatile team. You know,
- 20:14Speaker 1: they had the death lineup, which I'm sure we're going
- 20:16Speaker 1: to talk about, but they could play Draymond Green at
- 20:19Speaker 1: the five. Or if you have a big team, they
- 20:21Speaker 1: could play Bogut at the five. Or they were just
- 20:25Speaker 1: so interchangeable defensively. And, you know, that really came into play.
- 20:29Speaker 1: And to your point, though, before we get to your
- 20:31Speaker 1: next question, It wasn't just the Cavs that we thought
- 20:35Speaker 1: were going to be something. The Spurs were really good
- 20:37Speaker 1: that season.
- 20:38Speaker 2: Well, the 2014 Spurs are one of the greatest teams
- 20:40Speaker 2: of all time.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Of all time. And they're going into the next season.
- 20:44Speaker 1: So you're thinking about the Spurs are trying to win
- 20:45Speaker 1: a championship this year. If you look at even the predictions,
- 20:49Speaker 1: I think Ethan Strauss was the only person that said
- 20:51Speaker 1: the Warriors had a chance to win the title. And
- 20:53Speaker 1: even then, we were like, what the hell are you
- 20:54Speaker 1: talking about? But it was the Spurs. It was the Cavs.
- 20:58Speaker 1: the Thunder were in that mix. That's right.
- 21:01Speaker 2: They had gone to the West Finals, and this is
- 21:03Speaker 2: before Durant broke his foot.
- 21:05Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 21:05Speaker 3: He wound up breaking his foot that year.
- 21:07Speaker 1: It's the combination of we've never seen this before, and
- 21:10Speaker 1: also we're upending a lot of people's plans who have
- 21:13Speaker 1: plans to win a championship for these next few years,
- 21:15Speaker 1: and also individual legacies because you talk about LeBron, but
- 21:18Speaker 1: we're also talking about Russell Westbrook, who's like, who's this dude?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, James Harden. A whole generation of
- 21:25Speaker 1: players who have plans to be in the finals year in,
- 21:28Speaker 1: year out. All their plans is all fucked up.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, look, they ran through the league. They
- 21:32Speaker 3: won that championship.
- 21:34Speaker 2: But the championship, they kept running up against teams whose
- 21:37Speaker 2: point guards were hurt, right? There was a couple down
- 21:40Speaker 2: 2-1 situations. They were down 2-1 to Memphis in the
- 21:42Speaker 2: Western Conference Finals. They were down 2-1 to the Cavs
- 21:44Speaker 2: in the NBA Finals. They won it, but they won
- 21:47Speaker 2: it in a way where Andre Iguodala wound up being
- 21:49Speaker 2: finals MVP because we saw Dele win. getting Steph shit
- 21:53Speaker 2: for a little while. We were like, yo, we can't
- 21:55Speaker 2: reward that sort of behavior.
- 21:56Speaker 1: By the way, missed the Cavs, missed the Clippers and
- 21:59Speaker 1: the Spurs on that bracket too.
- 22:01Speaker 3: They did. They did. Like it was.
- 22:05Speaker 2: The issue was confirmation bias, right? Like it was a
- 22:07Speaker 2: team that we had all kinds of reasons to be
- 22:09Speaker 2: skeptical of because jump shooting teams don't win championships. The
- 22:12Speaker 2: part that we ignored about the Warriors was we think
- 22:15Speaker 2: of them as being a team that played small, but
- 22:17Speaker 2: they're not small. Draymond Green was the only guy that
- 22:19Speaker 2: was undersized for his position. But Steph Curry, this is
- 22:22Speaker 2: not the Steph Curry of 2008. Steph Curry had legitimate
- 22:25Speaker 2: size as a point guard. Clay Thompson is a big
- 22:27Speaker 2: two guard. Harrison Barnes, a big three. Andre Iguodala, a
- 22:31Speaker 2: big three. Andrew Bogut, a legitimate size center. Festus Azili
- 22:36Speaker 2: coming off the bench. Like, they had big guys. David Lee,
- 22:39Speaker 2: you know, when he does come back and gets a run.
- 22:41Speaker 2: They had big players for their positions. They just played
- 22:45Speaker 2: what we viewed as being small ball, but it became
- 22:48Speaker 2: important because they could play defensive because Draymond Green had
- 22:50Speaker 2: the long enough arms and could guard all the players
- 22:53Speaker 2: like Sean Marion, for example, with those sons. That's what
- 22:56Speaker 2: allows you to play that sort of game. So they
- 22:58Speaker 2: win a championship. We come back in 2016. Steve Kerr
- 23:01Speaker 2: has got a fucked up back, right?
- 23:04Speaker 3: He cannot.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I had forgotten that until right now. Steve Kerr does
- 23:07Speaker 2: not coach the start of the year because his back
- 23:09Speaker 2: is hurt. And so they make Luke Walton the coach.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Except they didn't really make Luke Walton the coach. Luke
- 23:13Speaker 2: Walton wore the suit. Draymond Green assigned himself to be
- 23:17Speaker 2: the coach. One thing Draymond Green said that would happen
- 23:19Speaker 2: when he was the coach was he was going to
- 23:21Speaker 2: shoot a lot more threes.
- 23:22Speaker 3: And he did. And by the way, he made a
- 23:24Speaker 3: lot of them.
- 23:25Speaker 2: And they took off on the entire league.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Like, this was.
- 23:30Speaker 2: If you were skeptical before, they were going to shoot
- 23:33Speaker 2: you completely out of it. And Steph Curry was as
- 23:37Speaker 2: dominant a scorer, it felt like, as we had seen,
- 23:41Speaker 2: especially for somebody his size with his style of game.
- 23:45Speaker 2: He's the greatest player ever who didn't live at the line.
- 23:47Speaker 2: He was just making shots, just precise.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Very rarely do you see a team who won a
- 23:54Speaker 1: championship have the chip on their shoulder the way that
- 23:58Speaker 1: Golden State Warriors team did, right? Because one thing you
- 24:00Speaker 1: were talking about, we were just talking about the playoffs
- 24:02Speaker 1: in the 14-15 season where they missed the one side
- 24:06Speaker 1: of the bracket that everybody deemed was tough. But also,
- 24:09Speaker 1: the Cavs were playing without Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving
- 24:13Speaker 1: in that finals for most of that final series in 15, right?
- 24:16Speaker 1: So everybody just said, oh, you guys beat LeBron? Then
- 24:19Speaker 1: that's cool, but you guys didn't. You know, you beat
- 24:22Speaker 1: a very hobbled Cavs team and you still could have
- 24:24Speaker 1: lost that series because you guys were down 2-1. And
- 24:27Speaker 1: so they're bringing all of that slights and energy and
- 24:31Speaker 1: all those things into that following season. And also, they're
- 24:34Speaker 1: just so fucking good, right? Like, they're just really good.
- 24:36Speaker 5: And every.
- 24:37Speaker 1: There were so many signature games that I'm sure we're
- 24:40Speaker 1: going to get to within that regular season, but I
- 24:42Speaker 1: just remember one of the games that really sticks out
- 24:45Speaker 1: to me is the game against Boston. It was an
- 24:48Speaker 1: early season game. It was right... was when they got
- 24:50Speaker 1: their 23rd win in a row to start the season and.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Say say that again hold on say that again because
- 24:56Speaker 2: i feel like we're moving past it.
- 24:59Speaker 1: Was it was it was it was their 23rd uh
- 25:02Speaker 1: they started the season 23 excuse me 24 you know
- 25:09Speaker 1: they were going into boston excuse me uh winning uh
- 25:12Speaker 1: going 23 winning 23 straight games to start the season
- 25:15Speaker 1: and they go into overtime And that was one of
- 25:18Speaker 1: Draymond's early signature games. And it was every bit of
- 25:20Speaker 1: Draymond because people forget. And I know Draymond gets a
- 25:22Speaker 1: lot of shit for his offensive or lack of offensive
- 25:25Speaker 1: prowess over the last few years. But like he was
- 25:27Speaker 1: genuinely a pretty good offensive player.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Right. Oh, that guy that could get that year. That
- 25:33Speaker 2: was not a complaint. Draymond Green is the coach. The
- 25:36Speaker 2: offense came around.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And like we'll get to it. I mean, you'll get
- 25:40Speaker 1: to it in the finals when we talk about his
- 25:41Speaker 1: performance then. But like. he gave you every single thing
- 25:45Speaker 1: that you could want, right? Like he basically took over
- 25:48Speaker 1: the game and they had dudes, he took over that game.
- 25:50Speaker 1: They went into double overtime. He helps win the game
- 25:52Speaker 1: for them. And you could see his force of will
- 25:53Speaker 1: kind of come into focus. And what happens is as Draymond,
- 26:00Speaker 1: as the game starts to happen, Draymond is pushing them.
- 26:02Speaker 1: We got to go for this record. We got to
- 26:04Speaker 1: go for this record. We got to go for this record.
- 26:06Speaker 1: And because Lou Walton is a substitute teacher in throughout
- 26:10Speaker 1: the first part of that season, they're able to do
- 26:14Speaker 1: whatever they want. And fortunately, they have guys that can
- 26:17Speaker 1: kind of regulate to a certain extent. They have Andre Iguodala,
- 26:20Speaker 1: they have Sean Livingston, they have a very veteran core.
- 26:23Speaker 1: But it comes to a head when Steve comes back.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And Steve's like, no, actually, I don't want you to
- 26:28Speaker 1: shoot that many threes, Draymond. And Draymond's like, yo, what
- 26:30Speaker 1: are you talking about? And it kind of comes to
- 26:32Speaker 1: a head in that February matchup against OKC, which was
- 26:35Speaker 1: a wild game.
- 26:37Speaker 3: Yo, so that was the one I was going to
- 26:38Speaker 3: talk about. And for people who don't remember this.
- 26:41Speaker 2: They're losing at halftime. I forget what the score was
- 26:44Speaker 2: at halftime, but the Warriors were losing at halftime. And
- 26:47Speaker 2: Steve Kerr is back now. He has come back from
- 26:49Speaker 2: the back injury. And by the way, it is kind
- 26:51Speaker 2: of crazy that 10 years later, he's still coaching because
- 26:53Speaker 2: he was in that kind of pain from back surgery
- 26:55Speaker 2: that makes guy like, I had a.
- 26:58Speaker 3: Buddy of mine who was talking to me about this.
- 27:00Speaker 2: I forget who we were talking about recently that had
- 27:02Speaker 2: something come up and it's just like, no matter what
- 27:05Speaker 2: somebody says they did to avoid back pain, after they've
- 27:08Speaker 2: had it, I will understand it.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Right?
- 27:10Speaker 2: And that's where Kerr was. He was physically decimated. But
- 27:13Speaker 2: once Kerr was the coach, Draymond wasn't the coach anymore.
- 27:16Speaker 2: And halftime of that Warriors game, I mean, of that
- 27:19Speaker 2: Warriors-Thunder game in Oklahoma City, Lisa Salters comes on TV
- 27:22Speaker 2: to report that they could hear Draymond screaming in the.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Hallway, I am not a robot.
- 27:29Speaker 2: That was the part that I will always remember, was
- 27:31Speaker 2: the I am not a robot line, which is basically,
- 27:34Speaker 2: Steve Curry told.
- 27:35Speaker 3: Him that he shouldn't be shooting that much.
- 27:36Speaker 2: And he didn't see why he shouldn't be shooting that much,
- 27:39Speaker 2: but it seemed like they were collapsing, right? Just under
- 27:42Speaker 2: the weight of the withering personality of Draymond green. And
- 27:45Speaker 2: then they came back with big shot. Steph hit at
- 27:47Speaker 2: the end of regulation before they wanted it over time.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, there was a lot of things that happened.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I want to go back to the, I want to
- 27:53Speaker 1: go back to the halftime part because I remember watching this.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I remember being in Emeryville, watching this on television. And
- 28:00Speaker 1: I remember being scared because I, And Draymond Green being
- 28:04Speaker 1: a black man and the police in Oklahoma City talking
- 28:08Speaker 1: about how they might have to go up in that
- 28:09Speaker 1: locker room and break up that fight. I remember thinking
- 28:12Speaker 1: about that. Right. And then they're down 11 and then
- 28:14Speaker 1: they just start going on a run.
- 28:16Speaker 2: Right.
- 28:17Speaker 1: And there's like there was a play where, by the way,
- 28:22Speaker 1: I want to go back again because we have to
- 28:24Speaker 1: contextualize this Oklahoma City Warriors rivalry going into it because
- 28:28Speaker 1: there's so many things that are kind of convoluting going
- 28:30Speaker 1: into this game. The Warriors were so good that year,
- 28:34Speaker 1: but it was one of those things whenever they played OKC,
- 28:36Speaker 1: it was like, oh, shit, OKC might be a problem
- 28:38Speaker 1: for us going into the postseason if we ever play
- 28:41Speaker 1: them again because they play us so well and they
- 28:43Speaker 1: match up so well with us because they have the
- 28:45Speaker 1: same length as us, because they have Kevin Durant and
- 28:48Speaker 1: they have Russell Westbrook. They have all of this athleticism
- 28:51Speaker 1: and defensive prowess. But what you started to see, the
- 28:54Speaker 1: Warriors make a run and you just see just grave
- 28:58Speaker 1: mistakes by Oklahoma City down the stretch of that game
- 29:01Speaker 1: because No matter what was going on behind the scenes,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Oklahoma City had very much control of it. And there's
- 29:07Speaker 1: a couple of plays where Kevin Durant throws some just
- 29:10Speaker 1: wild passes, and then you see the worst of Russell Westbrook.
- 29:14Speaker 1: That kind of previews what we see in the Western
- 29:15Speaker 1: Conference Finals. But then... There's this weird thing where Draymond
- 29:20Speaker 1: plays fucking awesome in that second half, even after he
- 29:23Speaker 1: yells at his coach. And then and then there's the
- 29:27Speaker 1: three pointer that happens by Steph and the Mike Breen moment.
- 29:32Speaker 1: And then there's some sort of vindication. But we still
- 29:34Speaker 1: got to figure this out. But this argument that happened
- 29:38Speaker 1: beforehand and it starts, there's a complaint that happens after,
- 29:45Speaker 1: it's like when Kevin leaves, Kevin Durant comes to the
- 29:48Speaker 1: Warriors and he leaves. But the complaint when he leaves
- 29:51Speaker 1: is the Warriors sweep too many things under the rug.
- 29:54Speaker 1: And that is a problem. And you start to see
- 29:56Speaker 1: that with Draymond, like the antics that happened The Warriors
- 30:00Speaker 1: continue to sweep that under the rug because they're starting
- 30:03Speaker 1: to win more and more. And when you're winning, the
- 30:06Speaker 1: Draymond antics don't really matter. But when you start losing,
- 30:08Speaker 1: that's when you have the biggest spotlight on you. And
- 30:12Speaker 1: all of that kind of came together was the first thing.
- 30:14Speaker 1: It was the first time it really came together on
- 30:16Speaker 1: a big monumental type of television game. And that's another
- 30:21Speaker 1: thing that's so fascinating about this team is, yeah, they won.
- 30:25Speaker 1: But we really just don't have soap operas like that
- 30:27Speaker 1: on NBA teams right now. And that was like the
- 30:29Speaker 1: beginning of the soap opera. And it was like wall
- 30:32Speaker 1: to wall. This is when they become the I think 14,
- 30:34Speaker 1: 15 is when they like when they be like open
- 30:37Speaker 1: the door of the zeitgeist. But then I think this
- 30:40Speaker 1: team is when they kind of just like just take
- 30:42Speaker 1: full step into every. They were the top story in sports,
- 30:47Speaker 1: which is hard for a basketball team to be in
- 30:49Speaker 1: an NBA team to be. especially when they're competing against
- 30:53Speaker 1: the NFL and other things like that. But this was
- 30:55Speaker 1: when the Warriors became the it team and what we

- 31:00Speaker 2: All right, now coming up next, we're going to stick

- 32:25Speaker 3: Hey, let's be honest.
- 32:27Speaker 2: At a certain age, our bodies don't feel like they
- 32:30Speaker 2: used to. Now here's what I learned. Your body makes testosterone,
- 32:34Speaker 2: but a lot of it gets locked up and can't
- 32:35Speaker 2: be used. There's this protein called SHBG that basically handcuffs
- 32:40Speaker 2: your testosterone. Even if your body's making testosterone, SHBG locks
- 32:45Speaker 2: it up so you can't access it. It's like having
- 32:48Speaker 2: money in the bank, but your debit card doesn't work.

- 33:49Speaker 1: All right.
- 33:49Speaker 3: We are back with Logan Murdoch.
- 33:50Speaker 2: And that is a very good point that you just
- 33:52Speaker 2: made right on the front side of the break. I
- 33:54Speaker 2: think it's important is that at that point, they were
- 33:56Speaker 2: the number one story in sports. Now, I would disagree
- 33:59Speaker 2: that that didn't happen because the previous four years. um
- 34:02Speaker 2: lebron james and he had been that right like it
- 34:05Speaker 2: was it led to a natural transition because we were
- 34:08Speaker 2: preparing to do it again for lebron but then we
- 34:10Speaker 2: wound up with this bigger story that became the warriors
- 34:13Speaker 2: and then they won the championship and then steph was
- 34:15Speaker 2: unlike anything that we had ever seen right like i
- 34:17Speaker 2: think we have talked about a lot of things but
- 34:19Speaker 2: i want to make sure to stop in this moment
- 34:21Speaker 2: and just appreciate one thing that's important to note and
- 34:24Speaker 2: i talked about this earlier started shooting a lot more
- 34:28Speaker 2: threes like at this point he's shooting 11 three-pointers a
- 34:31Speaker 2: game Nobody's done that in the NBA at that point.
- 34:34Speaker 2: 11 three-pointers, and he's making, hold on, let me make sure, 45%
- 34:41Speaker 2: of them while making 56% of his twos and making 90%.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Of his free throws.
- 34:48Speaker 2: And for the first time in about a decade, we
- 34:52Speaker 2: are legitimately considering the possibility that somebody's a better basketball
- 34:56Speaker 2: player than LeBron Jackson.
- 34:57Speaker 1: I'm looking at his stats with you right now on
- 34:59Speaker 1: Basketball Reference, and I'm continuing to be floored on this.
- 35:02Speaker 1: He's an unanimous MVP for a reason. He's averaging 30
- 35:06Speaker 1: a game, 50% from field goal range. This is just
- 35:12Speaker 1: raw numbers. 45% from three-point range. That's insane. Whilst taking
- 35:18Speaker 1: 11 threes a game. That's crazy work.
- 35:21Speaker 2: And leading the league in steals.
- 35:23Speaker 1: And leading the league in steals. I mean, yeah, say
- 35:25Speaker 1: that to people who say Steph can't play defense, which
- 35:27Speaker 1: I mean, he's a below average defender, but that's good
- 35:30Speaker 1: for him. But anyways, him coming into the fold. And again,
- 35:35Speaker 1: it goes back to, we didn't know how to talk
- 35:37Speaker 1: about Steph in that way. And when you look, I
- 35:39Speaker 1: was looking at highlights trying to prepare for this. And
- 35:42Speaker 1: when you look at the teams that they're playing, I
- 35:45Speaker 1: just put on like a mixtape from a highlight mixtape
- 35:48Speaker 1: from that year. It's weird to see the Warriors play
- 35:54Speaker 1: the style they're playing because it's literally the norm now.
- 35:57Speaker 1: But the other rosters that they're playing against have nothing
- 36:00Speaker 1: for this team because they just simply don't have the personnel, right?
- 36:03Speaker 1: I saw the, if you look at the home opener
- 36:07Speaker 1: of that season, when they're getting their rings, they're playing
- 36:09Speaker 1: against the New Orleans Pelicans. And the Pelicans are trotting
- 36:12Speaker 1: out Kendrick Perkins for picking roles against Steph. And it's
- 36:15Speaker 1: just very disrespectful. And I love Kendrick Perkins. But they
- 36:18Speaker 1: just simply don't have the personnel to fuck with Steph
- 36:20Speaker 1: and by extension, the rest of this team. Because there's
- 36:22Speaker 1: so many people that can get their own shot. We
- 36:24Speaker 1: didn't even talk about Harrison Barnes who can get his
- 36:26Speaker 1: own shot. Andre Godala who can get his own shot.
- 36:28Speaker 1: And then you put the greatest shooter of all time
- 36:32Speaker 1: to close the game out. It's really crazy. And then also,
- 36:36Speaker 1: I want to get on Steph and LeBron for this thing.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Because what we fail to realize is LeBron was like
- 36:43Speaker 1: Steph's big homie for a while, right? And then I
- 36:46Speaker 1: don't know if you've experienced this, but I've definitely experienced this.
- 36:50Speaker 1: where the big homie is no longer the big homie anymore,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and I'm on the same playing field as the big homie,
- 36:56Speaker 1: and the adjustment that goes with that. They're buddy-buddy now,
- 36:59Speaker 1: LeBron and Steph, but there was a real angst and
- 37:02Speaker 1: animus to them. I don't care what they say. There
- 37:05Speaker 1: was a bit of like, nah, bro, this is my show.
- 37:07Speaker 1: And then LeBron, what we talked about earlier, is like, no, wait,
- 37:09Speaker 1: this was supposed to be for me. You're fucking up
- 37:13Speaker 1: my Disney moment right now. What are we doing? What's
- 37:15Speaker 1: going on? And you could kind of see that tension there.
- 37:18Speaker 1: In 14-15, but it really– because we haven't talked about
- 37:22Speaker 1: the Cavs, but the Cavs were really good that season.
- 37:25Speaker 2: It was a weird season in 14-15 because that was
- 37:28Speaker 2: the David Blatt season.
- 37:29Speaker 1: That was the David Blatt season, but they got their
- 37:31Speaker 1: shit together. They did. And they were really good, and
- 37:34Speaker 1: the Spurs were really good, but the Warriors, 73-9, kind
- 37:37Speaker 1: of erases all of that. But you kind of see
- 37:40Speaker 1: that tension throughout the entire season between both of those guys.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:45Speaker 3: No, man, you're right. It, it really came to pass.
- 37:48Speaker 2: We'll talk more in the finals is when you really
- 37:50Speaker 2: got to see it in the 2016 finals that it
- 37:52Speaker 2: was like, Oh, Oh, I thought it was different. Right?
- 37:55Speaker 2: Like Steph is very interesting because we think of Steph
- 37:57Speaker 2: is like, you know, like that baby face assassin thing,
- 37:59Speaker 2: the assassin thing matters, right?
- 38:01Speaker 3: Steph, Steph, a killer. And we treat him like he,
- 38:04Speaker 3: a child. Very often.
- 38:05Speaker 1: It's funny. There's a, there's a, there's a thing that, um,
- 38:07Speaker 1: 50 cent always talks about when he talks about Kendrick Lamar.
- 38:11Speaker 1: And when he talks about Kendrick, uh, Kendrick tries to
- 38:14Speaker 1: he tells a story about how Kendrick just like likes
- 38:16Speaker 1: to act like, oh, like, yeah, man, I'm just so humble.
- 38:19Speaker 1: This is so cool that I'm here and stuff. And
- 38:22Speaker 1: 50 talking about this time where he says like he
- 38:24Speaker 1: looks at him and he's like, you know what you're doing.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Right.
- 38:26Speaker 1: And it's like the sly smile from Kendrick of like,
- 38:29Speaker 1: what do you mean? Steph is a bit the same way. Right.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Where he kind of puts a projects this like, yeah,
- 38:35Speaker 1: like I'm. I'm happy to be here. You know, he
- 38:37Speaker 1: says all the right things. But then when you get
- 38:39Speaker 1: him in some private moments, right, like there's a whisper.
- 38:42Speaker 1: There's the whisper of like, yeah, I know what's going
- 38:45Speaker 1: on and I want to kill everybody.
- 38:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:47Speaker 1: And you kind of see that when you're around him
- 38:49Speaker 1: more so. More so now he's kind of brought it
- 38:51Speaker 1: out of him. But in 15, 16, you didn't really
- 38:54Speaker 1: see it. You didn't see like the sly. It was
- 38:57Speaker 1: more smiling and dancing. But yeah, it was in him.
- 39:00Speaker 2: No, the big thing is basically the big homie looked
- 39:04Speaker 2: up and it's not even simply that he realized the
- 39:06Speaker 2: little homie wasn't the little homie no more. It's that
- 39:09Speaker 2: he looked up and he realized that the little homie
- 39:11Speaker 2: thought he was the big homie now.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Right?
- 39:13Speaker 2: Like I think that people, what people misunderstand about Steph
- 39:16Speaker 2: is regardless of how good you think Steph is, I
- 39:19Speaker 2: assure you, Steph Curry.
- 39:20Speaker 3: Thinks he's better.
- 39:22Speaker 2: And I believe this because at every turn of his
- 39:24Speaker 2: basketball playing career, we've all been like, wow, he's really good. Yeah,
- 39:28Speaker 2: but right.
- 39:29Speaker 3: And he's been, like no.
- 39:30Speaker 2: Like we're like wow steph curry became maybe the best
- 39:33Speaker 2: player in the nba didn't see that coming i guess
- 39:36Speaker 2: guess who did right like guess guess well look.
- 39:38Speaker 1: At look at who he's playing against right look even
- 39:39Speaker 1: the western conference and people that we was talking about
- 39:41Speaker 1: right even all the players that are compared to him
- 39:43Speaker 1: who he's beaten kevin durant russell westbrook James Harden, Anthony Davis,
- 39:49Speaker 1: LeBron James, all of his peers, he is beaten.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Like Anthony Edwards is on a very similar trajectory, but
- 39:57Speaker 2: doesn't have the pelts on it yet. But like I'm
- 39:59Speaker 2: saying with Steph, before he even had done that, I
- 40:02Speaker 2: assure you, he is not surprised at where any of
- 40:06Speaker 2: this has gone. But as that year goes on, I mean, look, man,
- 40:10Speaker 2: they run through the rest of the league. Never forget
- 40:11Speaker 2: that they were a big enough deal that when it
- 40:13Speaker 2: was time for them to go for their 73rd win
- 40:15Speaker 2: to set the record for regular season wins, Kobe's playing
- 40:20Speaker 2: his last game was relegated to ESPN2. He scored those
- 40:24Speaker 2: 60 points on ESPN2. Because the Warriors getting 73 was
- 40:30Speaker 2: on ESPN because that was what level of phenomenon this
- 40:34Speaker 2: team was. And so something I talked about with Kaitlyn
- 40:37Speaker 2: Clark that I think was interesting in terms of like
- 40:39Speaker 2: evaluating how she got to be as big as she
- 40:41Speaker 2: had at the time was that finally women's basketball, what
- 40:44Speaker 2: women's basketball didn't have or never has had is like
- 40:47Speaker 2: a high flyer, right? It's not that type of game,
- 40:49Speaker 2: but the high flyers back in the day were the
- 40:51Speaker 2: ones that got all the attention and got the people
- 40:53Speaker 2: out of their seats. And this day and age, it's
- 40:55Speaker 2: not the high flyers, it's the three-point shooters. And Steph
- 40:58Speaker 2: Curry is the one who changed the paradigm about what
- 41:01Speaker 2: became must-see entertainment in basketball. These warriors changed that paradigm
- 41:06Speaker 2: of what became must-see entertainment in basketball. It was watching
- 41:09Speaker 2: them shoot threes, which again ran counter to everything we
- 41:13Speaker 2: believe was necessary for you to be able to do
- 41:15Speaker 2: in order to win in the NBA. But it wasn't
- 41:17Speaker 2: just that it was Steph. It's Steph with Klay Thompson.
- 41:20Speaker 2: So you got these.
- 41:21Speaker 3: Two dudes who are shooting over 40% from three.
- 41:25Speaker 2: And a paradigm shift created by Kerr in understanding that
- 41:29Speaker 2: it's okay to shoot more of these threes, right? Like
- 41:32Speaker 2: we're now so far removed from Larry Bird thinking that
- 41:34Speaker 2: three-point shots were beneath him, right? Which is crazy. These
- 41:38Speaker 2: guys are trying to put up as many, right? These
- 41:39Speaker 2: are just like, I don't even need that, right? Like
- 41:41Speaker 2: think about what Larry Bird would have been in the
- 41:43Speaker 2: way we talked about him if the paradigm had adjusted
- 41:46Speaker 2: in that time, right? Yeah. Kerr took it there. Curry
- 41:50Speaker 2: and Thompson took it there. So now they're shooting a
- 41:52Speaker 2: zillion threes, and you have games where they're down by
- 41:54Speaker 2: 15 at the half, and what they became is the
- 41:57Speaker 2: best third-quarter team I feel like I had ever seen,
- 42:00Speaker 2: in part because they could roll out what our man
- 42:02Speaker 2: Vinny Goodwill named, and I wish he could.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Have trademarked it, the death lineup.
- 42:07Speaker 2: And the death lineup is when they put Draymond at center, Iguodala,
- 42:12Speaker 2: Harrison Barnes, Clay Thompson and Steph Curry, and they could
- 42:15Speaker 2: only run it for about 10 minutes a game because
- 42:17Speaker 2: it was too small, right? Yeah. But I would find
- 42:22Speaker 2: that that would be the winning margin in a lot
- 42:24Speaker 2: of games, especially when they got to the playoffs, is
- 42:26Speaker 2: that you could think that you could hold even or
- 42:28Speaker 2: even take a 10-point lead on them in those other minutes,
- 42:32Speaker 2: and then it's all going to fall apart when they
- 42:33Speaker 2: put in this lineup.
- 42:35Speaker 1: It would be, especially in the playoffs, right? Like, you
- 42:37Speaker 1: would go get media meals. You know, you get media meals,
- 42:40Speaker 1: you probably come out like... you know, maybe two minutes
- 42:44Speaker 1: into the third quarter, right? And I think when that
- 42:46Speaker 1: death lineup came out, we would make sure that we
- 42:48Speaker 1: were all out by that 12-minute mark so we could
- 42:52Speaker 1: see what was going on. And especially at Oracle in
- 42:54Speaker 1: a building like that where there would be, we would
- 42:57Speaker 1: always call it, there would be the Steph roar, there
- 42:59Speaker 1: would be the Clay roar, and there would just be
- 43:01Speaker 1: the Warriors roar. But like you would, what it would
- 43:04Speaker 1: do to that building was just, you would feel like
- 43:07Speaker 1: it would, because it was an old building. It was,
- 43:09Speaker 1: I think it was made in 1968. And you thought
- 43:13Speaker 1: that the walls were going to come in.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Right.
- 43:16Speaker 1: And it was just it was that was one element
- 43:19Speaker 1: of it. The other element of it was, again, to
- 43:22Speaker 1: the commentary, we didn't know how to talk about it.
- 43:25Speaker 1: We didn't know what we were seeing in real time.
- 43:27Speaker 1: And that led to the excitement even more. And I
- 43:29Speaker 1: think this was the first Twitter team where you were like, OK,
- 43:32Speaker 1: I'm on Twitter. Wait, I got to watch this team.
- 43:34Speaker 1: Twitter is telling you that you need to get in
- 43:36Speaker 1: front of. I think Wimby has a similar phenomenon when
- 43:39Speaker 1: Wimby is cooking now, but it's not like that. Where
- 43:42Speaker 1: you had to be in front of a television to
- 43:45Speaker 1: see what was going on because there was a game.
- 43:48Speaker 1: There was and there's so many moments where this happened. Right.
- 43:50Speaker 1: I think about game I think was game three or
- 43:52Speaker 1: four of the 15 first round where they're down in
- 43:57Speaker 1: New Orleans and out of nowhere, they just go on
- 43:59Speaker 1: a run and they go. They tied a game up
- 44:01Speaker 1: and it was a crazy three from Steph. And you
- 44:04Speaker 1: would just continually see these types of games and no
- 44:07Speaker 1: lead was safe. And I think the third quarter will
- 44:09Speaker 1: put the fear of God and other teams because you
- 44:11Speaker 1: didn't know who was going to go off. You didn't
- 44:13Speaker 1: know if Clay was just going to go on a
- 44:14Speaker 1: crazy rampage. You didn't know if it was going to
- 44:17Speaker 1: be Steph. You didn't know if it was just going
- 44:18Speaker 1: to be the defense that was just going to parlay
- 44:20Speaker 1: into a run. It was it was a fun thing
- 44:22Speaker 1: to watch. And I don't think we're going to see
- 44:24Speaker 1: that anytime soon.
- 44:26Speaker 3: And look, they get to the playoffs and.
- 44:28Speaker 2: They beat Houston 4-1 in the first round, but the
- 44:31Speaker 2: issue in the first round is that Steph Hurst, it was.
- 44:33Speaker 3: The MCL was the injury.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Yeah, he slipped. And we see.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Him hurt to close out that series.
- 44:38Speaker 3: He is hurt.
- 44:41Speaker 2: Yeah, and he was hurt to begin the series against Portland.
- 44:45Speaker 2: But I think the thing that gets forgotten about this squad,
- 44:48Speaker 2: they was rolling without him. Like, I don't think they
- 44:49Speaker 2: would have been able to win a championship without him,
- 44:51Speaker 2: but they were still rolling without him.
- 44:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the biggest thing, if you look back,
- 44:56Speaker 1: Sean Livingston was really good in stabilizing that team when
- 44:59Speaker 1: Steph was out, right? And he really was able to
- 45:03Speaker 1: galvanize that team around them. It was just a different
- 45:06Speaker 1: style of play that they had to play. They had
- 45:08Speaker 1: to play more methodical play, less chaotic. Draymond had to
- 45:11Speaker 1: have a little bit more responsibility. But Sean Livingston was
- 45:13Speaker 1: like the unsung hero of that playoff series. And once
- 45:17Speaker 1: he got back, they were back up and rolling against Portland.
- 45:21Speaker 1: And again, that kind of also goes to The teams
- 45:24Speaker 1: that they were playing, Houston, I believe, was an eight
- 45:26Speaker 1: seed that year. And Portland was a terrible matchup. The
- 45:29Speaker 1: Warriors were a terrible matchup for Portland. And so they
- 45:32Speaker 1: could kind of, you know, win. This was a crash
- 45:36Speaker 1: course to Oklahoma City. And the Warriors were so head
- 45:40Speaker 1: and shoulders above the rest of the league that they
- 45:42Speaker 1: could kind of carry themselves without Steph for a couple
- 45:45Speaker 1: of rounds. But they they had to get him right
- 45:47Speaker 1: for Oklahoma City.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Well, I want to make this point about Sean Livingston also,
- 45:50Speaker 2: because it speaks to like the larger composition of this team,
- 45:53Speaker 2: which is Sean Livingston was the dude that never shot threes.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Like Sean Livingston's game was to kill you at the elbow, right?
- 45:59Speaker 2: Being a 6'7, backup point guard. Right, right.
- 46:03Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Right.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Because by now we've.
- 46:04Speaker 2: Seen his knee fold over in front of the world.
- 46:06Speaker 3: Like, you know, like we.
- 46:08Speaker 2: He was a feel good element of his team that
- 46:11Speaker 2: this guy who came out of high school and we
- 46:12Speaker 2: never got to see what it could have been. but
- 46:14Speaker 2: he had such an important role on that squad. But
- 46:17Speaker 2: the Steph injury becomes important. Look, they get to the
- 46:19Speaker 2: Oklahoma City series, and what Oklahoma City did that I
- 46:23Speaker 2: feel like a lot of teams were kind.
- 46:25Speaker 3: Of afraid to do because the Warriors made them reactive,
- 46:28Speaker 3: was just go really big, right?
- 46:29Speaker 2: Have Steven Adams and Ennis Cantor out there at the
- 46:31Speaker 2: same time. Ennis Cantor can't guard anybody. That's the issue,
- 46:34Speaker 2: but they don't have anybody that can guard him. And
- 46:38Speaker 2: when they went up 3-1 in that series, the Warriors
- 46:41Speaker 2: had home court advantage, but It wasn't a quirky 3-1, right? Like,
- 46:46Speaker 2: they were winning that series against the Warriors. Steph did
- 46:50Speaker 2: not look like he did in the regular season. Of course,
- 46:52Speaker 2: that was a part of it. But, look, the Thunder
- 46:56Speaker 2: were doing it in that series. And they had that chance.
- 46:59Speaker 2: They had a chance.
- 47:00Speaker 3: To win it.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Yeah, like I said before, throughout the season, the Warriors
- 47:05Speaker 1: swept the Thunder in that season series, but it wasn't
- 47:09Speaker 1: an easy sweep by any means. You always knew that
- 47:12Speaker 1: it was going to be Oklahoma City that they were
- 47:14Speaker 1: going to play because, just like I said, the matchups.
- 47:16Speaker 1: They had everything that the Warriors did, but they were
- 47:18Speaker 1: just bigger. If you look at those first few games,
- 47:26Speaker 1: when there was a switch of Steph Curry, if he
- 47:28Speaker 1: switched from Steven Adams, he was going to get switched
- 47:30Speaker 1: on to Kevin Durant. And Kevin Durant, people look at
- 47:33Speaker 1: him as one of the greatest offensive players, but when
- 47:36Speaker 1: he wanted to, he was an elite defender. Right. Because
- 47:40Speaker 1: he can guard multiple positions and he could be a
- 47:42Speaker 1: rim protector. And you saw every bit of that with
- 47:44Speaker 1: Kevin Durant. And you could I went to a few
- 47:47Speaker 1: games in that series and you could just see just
- 47:50Speaker 1: them stifling. Basically hobbled Steph and Steph had to get
- 47:56Speaker 1: his knee right, even when we're talking. We didn't talk
- 47:58Speaker 1: about the Portland series, the I'm back game, but he
- 47:59Speaker 1: was pretty bad in that. He kind of had to
- 48:01Speaker 1: get his feet back up under him. And he probably
- 48:03Speaker 1: rushed back from that knee injury, because if you remember it,
- 48:07Speaker 1: that knocked him out of the Olympics, that injury. He
- 48:11Speaker 1: had to rehabilitate for the next season. And you could
- 48:15Speaker 1: kind of see just the weight of the season and
- 48:19Speaker 1: everything going against them throughout that season, going for the championship,
- 48:24Speaker 1: going for the record, all the hubris and the exhaustion
- 48:27Speaker 1: that comes with just managing a team like this kind
- 48:31Speaker 1: of fold onto them into that 3-1 situation. And they
- 48:34Speaker 1: had they had a real big hole to get out of.
- 48:36Speaker 1: It was very assumed that we were going to see
- 48:39Speaker 1: LeBron versus KD in the finals, which we were all
- 48:42Speaker 1: great at as a basketball community. We were fine with that.
- 48:44Speaker 1: But it was we were basically just assuming that it
- 48:47Speaker 1: was going to be a five game series. And damn,
- 48:49Speaker 1: we're going to get these jokes off.
- 48:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say this is my thing about that
- 48:54Speaker 2: series that I think is important in talking about this team.
- 48:56Speaker 2: So I've always said that this world has two kinds
- 48:59Speaker 2: of people, people who think Scottie Pippen is overrated and
- 49:01Speaker 2: people who think Scottie Pippen is underrated. I believe that
- 49:04Speaker 2: the strongest Scottie Pippen criticism is there is no true
- 49:08Speaker 2: Scottie Pippen game. You can maybe talk about game five
- 49:10Speaker 2: in the 91 finals, but the truth is Michael Jordan's
- 49:14Speaker 2: flu game should have been the Scottie Pippen game, but
- 49:16Speaker 2: it wasn't because Mike had Mike got the guy. Ebola
- 49:20Speaker 2: and he still got to come out here and do
- 49:22Speaker 2: this because that's just not something you can ask Scottie
- 49:24Speaker 2: Pippen to do right.
- 49:26Speaker 3: Klay Thompson has game six against Oklahoma City, right?
- 49:29Speaker 2: Like that's where the legend of game six Klay comes there.
- 49:33Speaker 2: And look, it's crucial because they were losing that. Like
- 49:35Speaker 2: this season was about to be over. It was all
- 49:38Speaker 2: going to be for not. And look, they got a
- 49:40Speaker 2: helping hand for Russell Westbrook kind of shooting himself out
- 49:43Speaker 2: of things. Like the Thunder did not hold their water
- 49:45Speaker 2: in the opportunity to win that.
- 49:47Speaker 3: But Klay Thompson did. Was it 37 in that game?
- 49:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Let me check real quick. Ryan, do your production magic
- 49:55Speaker 1: on this, my guy. Let me just make sure I
- 49:56Speaker 1: got this right. I got you. I got you.
- 50:00Speaker 2: 41.
- 50:00Speaker 3: My fault. 41, Klay Thompson.
- 50:04Speaker 1: 41. 41 in that game. But I think the thing was,
- 50:08Speaker 1: if you look back at that game, and I remember
- 50:09Speaker 1: watching it, and he was just keeping them afloat, right?
- 50:15Speaker 1: Because they were down double digits in that game. I
- 50:18Speaker 1: think that game was just a perfect amalgamation of the series.
- 50:21Speaker 1: And you kind of see that in– when you see
- 50:24Speaker 1: playoff series, they typically go down to one game or
- 50:26Speaker 1: one play. And that was the, that, that tells you
- 50:29Speaker 1: everything about the series. And when that three, one, when
- 50:33Speaker 1: the Warriors went down three, one, this is something that
- 50:35Speaker 1: they typically do.
- 50:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 50:36Speaker 1: I think that, you know, a more recent example of
- 50:40Speaker 1: what I'm about to describe is the 2022 finals where
- 50:43Speaker 1: Boston is pretty dominant against the Warriors for the first
- 50:47Speaker 1: few games. And the Warriors, I think they go down
- 50:50Speaker 1: to one, And that's before Steph goes on his crazy
- 50:53Speaker 1: run and wins the series. But they kind of use
- 50:56Speaker 1: those games as a just like kind of a steady
- 51:00Speaker 1: period where they're like, OK, we're studying the team. And
- 51:02Speaker 1: then once we figure it out, we're going to completely
- 51:03Speaker 1: exploit it. You saw that against Memphis when they put
- 51:06Speaker 1: Andrew Bogut against Tony Allen and it completely changes the series.
- 51:09Speaker 1: This one where what they saw in there and at
- 51:11Speaker 1: three once when they were down three one is Russell
- 51:14Speaker 1: Westbrook can be a really erratic, especially when when games
- 51:18Speaker 1: are on the line. And they were like, okay, we
- 51:20Speaker 1: can exploit that. As long as we stay close, we
- 51:23Speaker 1: can beat these guys. And not only was Russ bad
- 51:26Speaker 1: down the stretch, Katie was bad as well. Like there
- 51:28Speaker 1: was just a lot of, he did not look in control.
- 51:31Speaker 1: And I do want to probably get back to Clay
- 51:33Speaker 1: and how great he was during that. I want to,
- 51:36Speaker 1: we haven't talked about this throughout this season. One of
- 51:39Speaker 1: the other wrinkles of this was the ghost of Kevin
- 51:42Speaker 1: Durant upon this season where there is a assumption that
- 51:47Speaker 1: there's a Adrian Wojnarowski story, I believe that comes out
- 51:50Speaker 1: in February or January, where it's basically right around the
- 51:53Speaker 1: all-star break, right around the all-star break, where they're talking
- 51:55Speaker 1: about how Katie is just enamored with the Warriors and
- 51:58Speaker 1: there's going to be a pitch for him. And that's
- 52:02Speaker 1: something to look out in the off season. And you
- 52:04Speaker 1: see all of that, that, and that also plays a
- 52:06Speaker 1: part into this series. Cause it's like, what is Katie
- 52:09Speaker 1: going to do after this? No way. Cause we didn't
- 52:11Speaker 1: have a president for somebody getting beat. and then going
- 52:14Speaker 1: to the team he got beaten by. But then that's also,
- 52:17Speaker 1: you can see the weight on him during the backstretch
- 52:20Speaker 1: of that, of that game six, where he's not, he
- 52:23Speaker 1: doesn't feel like he's in control necessarily of the game.
- 52:26Speaker 1: And it's crazy because he's Kevin fucking Durant. He's one
- 52:28Speaker 1: of the clutch players of all time, but you see
- 52:31Speaker 1: just the moment getting too big for Oklahoma city. And
- 52:35Speaker 1: then you see the warriors kind of just pulling one
- 52:37Speaker 1: out of their ass. And, It was Klay Thompson who
- 52:39Speaker 1: balled out particularly and made the biggest shots, but it
- 52:41Speaker 1: was Steph who played, I believe, if I remember correctly,
- 52:44Speaker 1: did not play well in that first half and make
- 52:46Speaker 1: timely shots down the stretch. And you've seen the poise
- 52:48Speaker 1: that was coming out of them that wasn't there for
- 52:50Speaker 1: Oklahoma City from their stars. Because, I mean, there's plays
- 52:53Speaker 1: where early in the shot clock, down, then they're up,
- 52:58Speaker 1: the Thunder are, and Russ is just going full court.
- 53:01Speaker 1: He's just throwing the ball out of bounds, right? And
- 53:03Speaker 1: then KD is getting double teamed, and he's just throwing
- 53:06Speaker 1: the ball out of bounds or dicking it. Shots that
- 53:08Speaker 1: he wouldn't necessarily, you know, take. It's a lot like honestly,
- 53:12Speaker 1: it's a lot like what we're seeing right now with
- 53:14Speaker 1: the Lakers Rocket Series, where they're just doubling him and
- 53:16Speaker 1: there's no recourse for it. But it was it was
- 53:19Speaker 1: one of the defining games of of Klay Thompson's career
- 53:23Speaker 1: and one of the defining games of that run thus far.
- 53:26Speaker 1: And if they would have won that that year, it
- 53:29Speaker 1: would have probably been defining games of that NBA season.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Yeah, but look, the Warriors wound up winning that in
- 53:35Speaker 2: Game 7, bringing it back to the house.
- 53:37Speaker 3: Another bad Russell Westbrook game to close out that series.
- 53:40Speaker 1: Oh, by the way, KD was pretty bad in that series, too.
- 53:43Speaker 1: KD and Russ, if you look at their shooting numbers,
- 53:45Speaker 1: were terrible during the back half of that series. Their
- 53:49Speaker 1: shooting numbers were good, but their shooting attempts were pretty bad.
- 53:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so, like, Game 7, Durant was 10 for 19
- 53:58Speaker 2: from the floor.
- 53:59Speaker 5: Like, he.
- 54:00Speaker 3: He wasn't there. Russ, seven for 21, right?
- 54:03Speaker 1: Seven for 21.
- 54:04Speaker 2: And this was on a team, you got to remember,
- 54:05Speaker 2: that was starting self-check himself, Andre Robertson, who they were
- 54:10Speaker 2: playing four on five on offense.
- 54:11Speaker 3: The thing was, he was a monster, monster defender.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Maybe the greatest defender of all time to even justify
- 54:18Speaker 2: the fact that he could get on.
- 54:19Speaker 3: The floor if he's going to keep the puck.
- 54:22Speaker 1: I feel bad for how his career ended, man. He
- 54:23Speaker 1: had like a nasty knee injury. His career was never
- 54:26Speaker 1: the same, but he was really good.
- 54:28Speaker 2: Yeah, because he couldn't shoot. All he could do was
- 54:31Speaker 2: stuff that really required knees.
- 54:33Speaker 1: You know what I mean? As somebody that has his
- 54:37Speaker 1: own self-check on the basketball floor, I empathize. Hey, look, man.
- 54:42Speaker 3: I mean, I'm doing this show. I ain't playing in
- 54:43Speaker 3: the league. You know what I'm saying?
- 54:44Speaker 1: We got to be professionals at something, right?
- 54:47Speaker 3: We do.
- 54:48Speaker 1: We do.
- 54:48Speaker 3: But no, this will set us up, man.
- 54:50Speaker 2: We're going to talk later about these finals, and then
- 54:52Speaker 2: we'll talk later in the summer about everything that came
- 54:55Speaker 2: along with Kevin Durant coming to the Warriors. But Logan Murdoch,
