- 0:20Mercedes Benz Baton Rouge Studio. Here's Jacob Hester and Matt Flynn.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Yo, and to oh TV see they don't know anything
- 0:36about that party?
- 0:41Speaker 2: What hey? You know what?
- 0:42Speaker 3: Actually, we used to have to make everybody in the
- 0:45room do it.
- 0:46Speaker 2: We'll get there.
- 0:46Speaker 4: Don't want to do it.
- 0:47Speaker 5: So like we say it too time. Here goes okay, okay.
- 0:53Speaker 6: Yo.
- 0:56Speaker 3: He goes on for the first time, O T B one,
- 0:59O four five, ESPN Baton Rouge here on this Tuesday.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Morning, and my goodness, thank.
- 1:05Speaker 3: God they go a lot better to come in here today.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Flynn, Jake, we're all here.
- 1:15Speaker 4: How was dreadnet about half of two one?
- 1:21Speaker 7: I'm like, man, there's nothing worsewhere.
- 1:25Speaker 2: It looked bad.
- 1:26Speaker 3: We just saw Ole Miss lose to Murray State, and
- 1:30I'm like, oh, I want to make fun of them
- 1:32so bad, but I can't until we win, and then
- 1:35it's too late to make fun of them. But I'm
- 1:36glad that LSU was victorious, because it would have been
- 1:41a pretty tough show to come in here after losing
- 1:45to Little Rock, who fought like hell, credit to them,
- 1:48tip of the cap, respect. That was a team that
- 1:51did like everything they possibly could to get a victory
- 1:54and go to a super regional.
- 1:56Speaker 2: But LSU finds a way and wins ten to six.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:00Speaker 8: Look, I was watching this game and you know, admittedly,
- 2:05you guys know hadn't followed much of the baseball until
- 2:08this beautiful job. But I've been locked in and I
- 2:12was sitting there watching the game, you know, yelling at
- 2:16the kids to come watch it with me, all this stuff,
- 2:18and they're losing, and I'm like, oh my gosh, Day two,
- 2:21Like I've already I'm already talked out for the week.
- 2:23Speaker 4: I've done, I've done one three hour show.
- 2:27Speaker 8: We're going into Tuesday like, oh lordy, Like, I don't
- 2:30think I'm ready for like a depressed LSU just got
- 2:33eliminated by Little Rock show it would have been and look,
- 2:38that's that is one of the more difficult this job
- 2:41is when something like that happens and you're like, oh
- 2:44my god, that's.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Going to bring the vibe now, it's gonna be just.
- 2:46Speaker 5: A more season. Yeah, yeah, and then.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You're gone fishing.
- 2:51Speaker 8: And I know we'll get into like a lot of
- 2:53the details of the game and talk about it.
- 2:54Speaker 4: But man, what a what a turnaround?
- 2:57Speaker 8: And what did I told Taylor when I walked in
- 2:59this morning, What did difference just one dude can make
- 3:03on a team's morale energy levels?
- 3:06Speaker 4: Like bringing the Jews? The team looked dead, they looked asleep.
- 3:11Speaker 8: They were making some decent plays here and there, they
- 3:13had the home run.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Early, but like there was just no juice. I didn't
- 3:17see any Jews playing.
- 3:18Speaker 8: And then this little dude, this freshman, runs out on
- 3:22the mound and super hyperactive pitching motion, wind up and
- 3:30just talking and celebrating, and all of a sudden, you
- 3:34just like I could feel it in my house watching
- 3:36the game. I was like, oh my gosh, what a
- 3:38breath of fresh air this dude is. And then everyone
- 3:41just feeds off it. It happens all the time. You
- 3:42see it sometimes when like a backup QB comes in
- 3:48a little bit.
- 3:48Speaker 4: I guess, well, you just see it in sports all
- 3:51the time.
- 3:51Speaker 8: The difference one dude with a lot of energy, confidence
- 3:55talking that Ish can do to bring up. Everybody just
- 4:00looked like stale. Man, they looked stale. They looked dead,
- 4:02They looked tired of sleep, you know what I mean.
- 4:04And Little Rock didn't know. They didn't They looked like
- 4:07the scrappy little team that was there with nothing to lose,
- 4:10just looked like they were like holding on.
- 4:12Speaker 4: They wanted up. They wanted Little Rock to to lose
- 4:15the game.
- 4:15Speaker 2: Basically.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Yeah, and then once they figured out, oh, they're not
- 4:18going they're not going to do that, we gotta do something.
- 4:21Speaker 5: That's interfering to relax. He needed to like just take.
- 4:26Speaker 3: You were fast, you were athletic, you're getting to those balls,
- 4:29you're getting great jumps, and you didn't need to jump.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Yeah, but you're not getting on top ten.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Exactly what you told last night. I was like, man,
- 4:40he doesn't need to jump, Like that's are great players.
- 4:42I was like, yeah, they are, but he's trying to
- 4:43get on Sports Center time.
- 4:45Speaker 6: You can't get you can't get on it if you jump.
- 4:47Speaker 4: I get it.
- 4:47Speaker 8: I remember doing that as a kid, like you're playing
- 4:50catch or you're you're in practice or something, and like,
- 4:52you know, you can get to this pop up, but
- 4:54I'm gonna wait a couple of seconds before I start
- 4:56my run a little.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Bit because I wanted to.
- 4:57Speaker 8: I want to get a little dive, man, I want
- 4:59to get a little backhand side action.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Yeah, good for you.
- 5:02Speaker 7: It was I feel like you could kind of see
- 5:05it start to turn for the Tigers a little bit.
- 5:08And I kind of saw it too, where it was like, Okay,
- 5:11you're facing you know, a midweek team, you know what
- 5:14I mean, Like for sure, there's a point where he
- 5:17had like two straight walks. I think he walked Koreel
- 5:21with like four straight balls, and you're like, Okay, this
- 5:23is a picture that you've seen before. You know, like
- 5:26you've seen this guy in the midweek. You've seen this team,
- 5:30and they were literally the only team in the tournament
- 5:33that had a losing record. So I just feel like
- 5:36Sunday was just such that wasn't the team that LSU
- 5:40is and the beginning of the game yesterday wasn't either,
- 5:45and they just had they needed Case and Evans to
- 5:47come in, fire them up and get it together. It
- 5:49was Yeah, that game had me about to go into
- 5:52cardiac orus.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Yes it did. And let's go ahead and kind of
- 5:56get this thing started.
- 5:57Speaker 3: And that is going to be brought to you by

- 6:35Speaker 2: Way, Well that's I mean, I know what I'm not.
- 6:38Speaker 8: You got to know when it comes to hydration, I'm
- 6:41not just some guy about to say you're expert and
- 6:45kind of like king of hydration.
- 6:48Speaker 2: You have put that on a business card before.
- 6:50Speaker 8: Well, no, it's on my It's on the signature of
- 6:52my email and you typed it out. Yeah, so just
- 6:54for like regular hydration. Yeah yeah, feel a little under
- 6:58the weather, had a couple too many pops that I
- 7:00before or anything like that.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Dude, Go flow check him out.
- 7:03Speaker 3: YEA very excited to have him on a team. OTB
- 7:05again goflowiv dot Com. I'll say this, like, as we
- 7:09get really diving into the game, the thing for me
- 7:13is what.
- 7:14Speaker 2: We talked about yesterday. And look, I.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Gave Scowe and his credit because he did nail that
- 7:18Zach Cowen was going to start that game.
- 7:22Speaker 2: That was not the decision that we thought in this room.
- 7:25Speaker 3: We thought it was going to be Caseon Evans and
- 7:27then Zach Cowen would come into the game because of
- 7:30all the reasons we talked about. I mean, Zach Cowen
- 7:33is somebody that has not started a baseball game this year.
- 7:37Speaker 2: He now last year, Yeah, he was great.
- 7:39Speaker 3: He had big moments and the stage being big is
- 7:42not new to him, like he's done that many times
- 7:45in his career. But we talked about it like when
- 7:47you haven't done something in a long time, a full
- 7:51year of baseball and you haven't gone out there and
- 7:53been the guy to throw the first pitch man. Baseball
- 7:56is so mental and there's so many little things that
- 7:59can go wrong, and you knew immediately that Zach Cowen
- 8:03didn't have his best stuff, and if we're being honest
- 8:05with ourselves, he hasn't had his best stuff in a
- 8:08long time, and so like that's why here in this
- 8:11room we're like, Okay, well it's gonna be Case and
- 8:13Evans and then you're going to try to get to
- 8:15Zach Cowen. And luckily for LSU, they didn't get too
- 8:19far behind before Evans could come in and do what
- 8:22he did.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Yeah, and.
- 8:26Speaker 8: I think about the decision again, I'm kind of, you know,
- 8:32a little bit late to the party on learning all
- 8:33these names and the pedigrees and their history and what
- 8:36they've done. But I kind of understand the decision from
- 8:41just a mental aspect. You're playing your fourth game, your
- 8:44fourth game of four days. You really this first time
- 8:48all season you've done that, so like you have to learn.
- 8:51You're you're learning about your bullpen. You're learning about your
- 8:53pitchers as you go in this game for elimination game
- 9:00against a team you're supposed to be all the pressure
- 9:03on the world's on you. There's no pressure on the
- 9:05guys in the other jersey. So I kind of understand,
- 9:09from like a middle standpoint, you going with the pitcher
- 9:12that has a little bit more experience, Like you would
- 9:15think that he could step on the mound and and
- 9:18have the better chance.
- 9:19Speaker 6: I guess.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I mean, I've been not being too bit. You could
- 9:21make that argument.
- 9:22Speaker 2: You could make that argument for sure.
- 9:24Speaker 3: It was just him not starting a game and over
- 9:27a year and your first start, and sometimes that happens
- 9:31in regionals and super regionals. It's like, man, this guy's
- 9:34pitch fifteen innings all year, had started a game. But
- 9:37this was somebody that's been in a lot of big moments.
- 9:40But they were all like in the seventh and eighth
- 9:43and ninth inning, and so it was a decision.
- 9:46Speaker 2: And again you could split hairs.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I would have, you know, you know, assumed Kayatean Evans
- 9:51would have gotten the start. Zach Cowan gets the ball,
- 9:54and again you blinked and it was five to one,
- 9:58and luckily you had.
- 10:01Speaker 8: Look he come Maybe Jays like playing chess and we're
- 10:05all playing checkers in our analysis of this. Maybe he
- 10:08knows that Cason was going to come off the bench
- 10:10and and be able to come off the bench better
- 10:14than anybody else.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Could I think this is quick.
- 10:17Speaker 5: Too, straight strikeouts? Why he should Maybe he's a.
- 10:22Speaker 4: Better reliever than he has a starter.
- 10:24Speaker 9: You know, Cowen got credit for like all five runs
- 10:27because they were on base when when Evans came in,
- 10:29But it was it was three nothing. I mean it
- 10:31was it was three to one at that point. He
- 10:33had given up three runs and he pulled him. But look,
- 10:36Jay knows more about baseball than all of us in
- 10:38this room combined.
- 10:39Speaker 6: There's no question about it.
- 10:41Speaker 9: He I think this was trying to be the smartest
- 10:44guy in the room, trying to change it up. Like
- 10:46I get that he was a starter at Wafford. He
- 10:49was a really good starter. I understand that.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I don't.
- 10:51Speaker 6: I don't care.
- 10:52Speaker 9: You started a guy in a must win game that
- 10:54hasn't started all year period.
- 10:56Speaker 4: That's it.
- 10:57Speaker 9: And I think if if Jay's honest about it, you
- 10:59went asked him, he would say, yep, don't it it
- 11:01move by me.
- 11:02Speaker 6: I screwed that up. I almost cost my team.
- 11:04Speaker 4: The game that far.
- 11:06Speaker 2: I don't know that he go that far.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I think he would just say, for the reasons that
- 11:10Matt just laid out, here's why I went with him
- 11:13instead of the true freshman. And I had two pitchers
- 11:17that I knew, these two guys are going to either
- 11:19get us to the Supers or we're gonna go home
- 11:21with these two guys, and he went with a guy
- 11:23with a more experience. I'm saying, like, for me, I
- 11:27would have started case In Evans just because he at
- 11:30least has started those games.
- 11:31Speaker 7: He started against Tennessee, like he's yeah, he started against
- 11:35Tennessee like that was the biggest regular season series that
- 11:39we had in the box. And to me, it's like
- 11:45he's been getting touched up and we all knew this.
- 11:48I Cason Evans went out there and threw eight straight strikeouts.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I mean what they should.
- 11:54Speaker 6: It was the graphic last weight.
- 11:55Speaker 4: It was like.
- 11:57Speaker 9: First like seven appearances he gave up reruns. His last
- 12:01six appearances, he had given up eight runs, so like
- 12:03you you could kind of see it. And that was
- 12:05before the game even started. It was like, here's your
- 12:07starting pitcher, here's the e r A, here's what he's
- 12:09done recently.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Did anybody get PTSD when Anthony Iroston's going in there
- 12:13and he's warming up and gates.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Jump, Yeah I did.
- 12:17Speaker 5: Yeah, he was giving me like war flash.
- 12:19Speaker 6: But actually I didn't hate that.
- 12:21Speaker 4: No, I didn't hear.
- 12:24Speaker 3: As soon as soon as Cason Evans was doing what
- 12:26he was doing, I said, oh, Anthony Irosen's closing this game.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, because there's nobody else that.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I'm trusting, right, now and Kate can't come in because
- 12:34he pitched on Saturday. Anthony Ironson, Now, he went seven innings,
- 12:38but it was with ease right and on Friday, so
- 12:41he's gonna be available to come back in then as
- 12:43soon as like two minutes later the TV cuts, he's
- 12:45going to the bullpen.
- 12:48Speaker 2: That was the only guy that could close that game.
- 12:49Speaker 3: But it's just because Gates Jump and who didn't pitch
- 12:52bad when he came in against North Carolina, but he
- 12:54did get the loss last year.
- 12:57Speaker 6: It's like, oh boy, was it you about one when
- 13:00Jump came in last year?
- 13:00Speaker 9: I think it was the exact same. I think it
- 13:02was the exact same You had a one run lead.
- 13:05Oh yeah, so I was actually about to stop y'all
- 13:09throw some stats out from last year. But you know what,
- 13:14it was amazing about sports. It's like, you're you could
- 13:19be a great coach. He can be a great player.
- 13:22But at the end of the day, it comes down
- 13:23to good fortune, good preparation, things going your way a
- 13:30little bit, and then just for a good coach preparing them.
- 13:34Speaker 8: But then the players got to do that, got to
- 13:36do what they do. So Jay makes this decision, and
- 13:39you know, we all all agree that. You know, we
- 13:41wouldn't have made the same decision. Okay, but guess what
- 13:45he only asked to answer like one question at the
- 13:47press conference and then never think about that decision again.
- 13:50We talk about this for one segment and then we
- 13:52move on because they won the game, instead of us
- 13:56talking about it until next January.
- 14:00Speaker 4: Right, that would have been brutal.
- 14:02Speaker 5: This is gonna hurt for like a while.
- 14:04Speaker 3: If we would have lost, we would have opened the
- 14:06show playing Simon and Garfunkel.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah, hello darkness, smile.
- 14:10Speaker 7: Right, it would have been like, not just for us,
- 14:14but like in the country, a really like huge upset.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Would have been one of the biggest in the last
- 14:20fifteen year.
- 14:21Speaker 9: Yeah, to her point, like last year you lost to
- 14:23North Carolina like rock, Yeah, this is little Rock. And
- 14:27then me and you and Matt were talking about it
- 14:28before the show, like two things are wild this weekend.
- 14:32First nine SEC teams got eliminated in regionals.
- 14:35Speaker 4: That is wild.
- 14:36Speaker 9: Also, the teams that won Murray State won Wright State one.
- 14:39I mean this was kind of the year, like if
- 14:41this was when that happened to you at the box,
- 14:43this was the year you kind of felt that the
- 14:44second ending that's I.
- 14:46Speaker 3: Was telling me the next over and off campus, we
- 14:48had some people like that were chiming in, like you
- 14:51know that maybe aren't the biggest college baseball fans are like, hey,
- 14:54is this like a sixteen beating a one in basketball?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Was like, no, it's not that.
- 14:58Speaker 3: It's not that you had four do it on Friday.
- 15:01How many sixteens have beaten ones one? Like when Virginia
- 15:04went down, So that's happened once. Ever, this happened four
- 15:07times on Friday, so it's not that's not the same.
- 15:09And you had some baseball teams I mean, utsa, it's
- 15:12being Texas now three times and knocked him out.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yeah, Like that's just what baseball.
- 15:17Speaker 4: Is, crazy kryptonite.
- 15:21Speaker 10: Yep.
- 15:21Speaker 8: Well, if if it had gone different, what would just
- 15:24move on to football?
- 15:25Speaker 4: Seven too?
- 15:26Speaker 3: We just like like two months, no, man, I mean
- 15:30today would been like just.
- 15:33Speaker 2: Post mortem, just letter rip letter.
- 15:36Speaker 6: I mean we went out there believing who's coming back.
- 15:41Speaker 8: That's here's my question. Let's start thinking about the head
- 15:45coach for Little Rock. Where's he coaching next year?
- 15:47Speaker 2: Oh he'll get a job. Oh yeah, there's no doubt
- 15:50he'll get He'll get it.
- 15:51Speaker 8: I mean he I mean his his interviews were great. Yeah,
- 15:53he he came off really good.
- 15:55Speaker 5: On Virginia on the coverage. Or did they get somebody after.
- 15:59Speaker 2: No, No, don't.
- 15:59Speaker 3: I think O'Connor obviously left and went to Mississippi State.
- 16:03Speaker 2: I don't that's that's gonna be one of those jobs.
- 16:05Speaker 5: It's like, I don't love a coaching case.
- 16:07Speaker 3: It's not certainly like even though oh it's perfect, even
- 16:11though UVA has won national championship, Like that's a place that,
- 16:15over the last five years is not able to keep
- 16:19up with the ones that want to keep up the
- 16:21SEC schools, the other ACC schools that care more about
- 16:25college baseball. Uh, your Oregon State, your Oregons. But it's
- 16:29still a really good job. And so yeah, UVA is
- 16:31going to get a good coach. I just don't know
- 16:33if it's going to be like, You're not going to
- 16:34steal somebody from the SEC. It's going to be somebody
- 16:39that's either young and has earned the right to see
- 16:41if he can step up to that or maybe a
- 16:43lateral move.
- 16:44Speaker 4: So little Rock coach.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Good.
- 16:48Speaker 8: I'm a big fan of the guy. Take a little
- 16:53scrappy bunch, look the tiger in the eye, m punch
- 17:00the face few dumbs.
- 17:02Speaker 3: That that happened as well, So look a ton to
- 17:05get to obviously, like we've mentioned it already, like Ole
- 17:08Miss lost to Murray State, we got we gotta make
- 17:11sure that we highlight that for sure, Ben Mince, I
- 17:13hope you're listening, you bum you.
- 17:15Speaker 4: Love them the trash?
- 17:18Speaker 3: Well, yeah, T Bob probably letting him know just what
- 17:21he thinks in Chicago, So don't worry, Ben Mins is
- 17:24getting his. When we come back, though, let's break it
- 17:26all down. What happened across the country. Ethan Fry somebody
- 17:30we got to talk about, like he might deserve his
- 17:32own segment today. We've got all that coming back your
- 17:35way when we jump back here on OTB off.
- 17:38Speaker 2: The bench, I go to trash rangers dot com.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Trash rangers dot com is the website to sign up
- 17:44for residential trash pickup commercial trash service.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Right there on the bottom of the website.
- 17:50Speaker 3: You can get that done if you are one of

- 19:00Speaker 1: From players to legends, Hester and Flynn breakdown l s
- 19:04U Football like only champions can I.
- 19:07Speaker 4: Just can what.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I don't know if this is a legend, players just slappies,
- 19:15I don't know.
- 19:15Speaker 4: I wouldn't listen.
- 19:16Speaker 8: I was listening to a Fergie voice of an angel unless.
- 19:20Speaker 2: She's singing the national anthem at an NBA All Star game.
- 19:23Speaker 6: Yeah, that was bad, memorable, memorable.
- 19:27Speaker 2: It's a great song though, absolutely.
- 19:29Speaker 7: I just love when they were panning out all the
- 19:31players and they were trying so hard not to laugh
- 19:33while she was doing that.
- 19:35Speaker 9: Actually has the funniest reaction to that. It's I think
- 19:38he's the first one to crack.
- 19:39Speaker 3: There's just some songs that you can't do too much.
- 19:43She did right, far too much. She went seven miles
- 19:47past two.
- 19:48Speaker 9: They were like, hey, can you do this? Like four
- 19:49out of ten? She's like twelve, got it?
- 19:51Speaker 8: And if you're gonna do it different, you got to
- 19:53be known for being like a different type.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Of artist already, Like I've seen you know James Taylor,
- 19:57Yeah has done the national anthe.
- 20:00Speaker 8: There you're known of like having great pipes, Yeah, just
- 20:04like have great pipe.
- 20:05Speaker 2: Great.
- 20:06Speaker 4: There's some moments in that song where you can show
- 20:08it off.
- 20:08Speaker 9: It's right, Yeah, try to do it like sultry, like
- 20:15the names Relum is just not the song for that.
- 20:17Speaker 4: What is Dale?
- 20:18Speaker 8: Tell Brennan like, I can't even look at you right now.
- 20:20You sound like a combination of Fergie and Jesus.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that was a compliment.
- 20:25Speaker 4: It was a huge compliment.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Compliment, but not when you're doing.
- 20:29Speaker 8: Extra sing it Francis Scott Key, Yeah right, roade a
- 20:33bangor sing it.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:36Speaker 3: But coming back to it, that that song, that's a
- 20:40good one.
- 20:41Speaker 2: That was a good one.
- 20:42Speaker 4: All right.
- 20:43Speaker 3: We got to talk about kind of the offense for
- 20:46LSU Baseball, what it was looking like it was going
- 20:49to be and what it ended up being. We can't
- 20:53say enough about Ethan Fry in what he did four
- 20:56for four, four RBIs two walks, was all over the
- 21:01base path yesterday last night. He has now become the guy.
- 21:06And if y'all have somebody different, please tell me. I
- 21:10don't trust any other player more than I trust him
- 21:13when he's in the batter's box right now. And for
- 21:16as much as we want to like wonder and speculate
- 21:19maybe why Zach Cowan started the game on the mound
- 21:23that decision, which again you can certainly find a case
- 21:26and make a case for it, I get it. How
- 21:30about the lineup changes, Jay needs a big outa boy
- 21:34on that. Because he moves Ethan Fry to the two hole,
- 21:38Stephn milem to the three hole, you move Bear Jones
- 21:41back to the sixth hole and all of that worked.
- 21:46If Ethan Fry is not in the two hole last night,
- 21:49you do not win that baseball game.
- 21:52Speaker 2: You don't win.
- 21:53Speaker 3: You can't come in here, you can't call the show,
- 21:56you can't hit me up on social media and give
- 21:59me a path for LSU to win that game. Ethan
- 22:02Fry is not hitting two behind Kurio.
- 22:06Speaker 4: Yeah, that dude.
- 22:07Speaker 8: I mean, he just stepped up to the plate and
- 22:10it just looked and felt different when he was in the.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Bat at a large game.
- 22:13Speaker 8: He's a large person. He just hits the hell out
- 22:17of the ball. Y'all can speak more on the lineup
- 22:22changes and the ins and outs and the details about it,
- 22:25but what I noticed watching the game yesterday is from
- 22:30one through nine, Lis shoes lineup to me in the
- 22:34second half of the game made the biggest adjustment and
- 22:38one thing that made the difference in the game, which
- 22:40was adjusting to a tight, tight strike zone. They made
- 22:45him throw it right over the middle.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Because that.
- 22:49Speaker 8: I couldn't believe how tight the strike zone was. I
- 22:51was like, looked like a strike to me. Both teams
- 22:53it was. It was both and I feel like I
- 22:56saw that most of the games and sing, and I
- 22:59was like, that's strike right, absolutely, I would say the
- 23:04same thing. Even one of the pictures for Little Rock
- 23:07told that as well, when he was getting pulled. Yeah,
- 23:10he did a couple of a couple other words, he
- 23:12said a couple of Little Rock didn't make as discipline
- 23:16of an adjustment. To me, they were swinging at more
- 23:19outside of the strikes, and there was only a couple
- 23:21of the bats where for L.
- 23:23Speaker 2: S U that I saw, Yeah, that I was like,
- 23:25I don't swing at it, don't swing at it.
- 23:26Speaker 3: But Little Rock was doing it more. Bear had some
- 23:29of those before he did. But like I mean, I
- 23:33loved it. Like the pictureld be up out how many.
- 23:38Speaker 6: Like how many did.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Like how many did did they the Little Rock throw?
- 23:44How many times.
- 23:45Speaker 5: We had or six?
- 23:50Speaker 2: Eight? They had eight? L s U had five?
- 23:54Speaker 8: Yeah, to me, that was just the difference in the game,
- 23:56And I felt like most of those walks were coming
- 23:58in the back half of the game.
- 23:59Speaker 3: To your point, it's actually it's a good take that
- 24:02LSU did have the better takes. They figured out the
- 24:05zone quicker than Little Rock did. And once you figure
- 24:08it out as a hitter, like some of these pitches,
- 24:11you might if you know that the umpire is, you know,
- 24:15expanded his zone, you're gonna say, well, I gotta protect. Yeah,
- 24:18I mean that's that's at every level of baseball for sure,
- 24:21every level. I mean eight U kid pitch baseball, right,
- 24:25we tell the kids, like, as soon as he calls
- 24:27that one that's in the other batter's box, Hey, he's
- 24:30calling that, you gotta protect.
- 24:32Speaker 4: It looked like to me that there was.
- 24:35Speaker 8: There was a couple of times, many times probably that
- 24:38batters for LSU were one hundred percent taking on two
- 24:41and zho and sometimes yeah sometimes ono, right, they were
- 24:45just one hundred percent taken make him throw it.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Definitely three to one. There was a ton a lot,
- 24:50so you can tell, okay, this was straight take.
- 24:52Speaker 5: It was take and do not because there was who
- 24:56was it?
- 24:56Speaker 2: I think it was Braswell had one.
- 24:58Speaker 5: That right down.
- 25:01Speaker 2: The middle, I mean eighty five miles or three to one. Yeah,
- 25:05he took it.
- 25:05Speaker 7: I'm like, yeah, I think it was Braswell that I
- 25:08was thinking over.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Oh I knew, I know how you watch baseball. It
- 25:11was Braswell, Yes, without question it was. But what about
- 25:18Hernandez too?
- 25:19Speaker 11: Bro?
- 25:19Speaker 3: Two homers, I mean and the first one how quickly
- 25:24he pulled.
- 25:24Speaker 2: His hands inside of that baseball.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Yeah, man, And that was just like that was the
- 25:30moment more than any you had in the game, like
- 25:33you had like it you and you had to have
- 25:35it in that moment because you're wondering, is LSU going
- 25:39to tie this thing up?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Because if they tie it up, they'll win it.
- 25:42Speaker 3: But they got to tie it up right now, And
- 25:46I thought there was no chance that baseball was staying
- 25:49fair just because of how far inside he had to
- 25:52bring his hands.
- 25:53Speaker 2: I'm like, man, there's just no chance. But he knew it.
- 25:56Speaker 3: See, we didn't get that angle on the first TV
- 25:58on the broadcast of him looking at the dugout and celebrating.
- 26:01You know, it's trying to track the ball, so we
- 26:04didn't know it. I thought for sure it was going foul.
- 26:06But that was the moment like once you tied it up,
- 26:09you were going to win it. And it sounds weird,
- 26:11but it's like, are you going to be able to
- 26:13tie it up at any point?
- 26:14Speaker 4: No?
- 26:14Speaker 9: And then you know they jump at seven five because
- 26:17he had another home run and then bottom of the eight, dude,
- 26:21like they they cut it seven six, and like l
- 26:23you might be out of gas, like what happened to
- 26:25Byans and doesn't have it? Then they get three more
- 26:27in the ninth, you get a home run by Bear,
- 26:29you get a home run by Fry. It's like, like
- 26:31to your point, that one home run by by Louis
- 26:34Hernandez like changed everything.
- 26:37Speaker 7: I yes, because it's like, are you going to tie
- 26:39it up? Because in the third we left the bases
- 26:42loaded again, and.
- 26:43Speaker 5: That was about to like that was right? Was it?
- 26:48Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 26:49Speaker 7: I like, oh my gosh, I about threw my remote
- 26:53out the TV whenever I saw them leave the bases loat.
- 26:55Speaker 2: I said some sweet nothings to my TV.
- 26:57Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm like again.
- 27:00Speaker 7: And then Ethan Fry hits that double I think in
- 27:03the fourth the next the next inning, and.
- 27:05Speaker 5: I was like, okay, we got something. We're working with something.
- 27:08Speaker 11: And then I'm like, just you know what I was
- 27:10thinking about when Ethan walks up with the basis loaded
- 27:13of the fourth was the show yesterday where you said
- 27:17if the bases are loaded, I don't even need you
- 27:18to hit a home run.
- 27:19Speaker 4: In the fourth inning with the basis he walked up
- 27:22the bat. I was like, boll it hits you a
- 27:24ding wrong.
- 27:28Speaker 6: He's gonna love this right.
- 27:31Speaker 3: It's perfect right in the gap. You knew it as
- 27:35soon as it left the bat, and you knew who
- 27:37was on the basis for you, it's like, yeah, curious.
- 27:43Speaker 2: With that question.
- 27:44Speaker 9: Stanfield's curios area got that like fry for how big
- 27:50he is.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Whe he was.
- 27:54Speaker 5: Like that inside the park home run had like his.
- 27:57Speaker 3: Like when you look at his perfect game profile, his
- 28:00position is like catch your third left field right deep
- 28:06on built different, I mean actually.
- 28:07Speaker 9: Like literally build mostly like a player. I mean, you know,
- 28:13pretty good duel threat QB A rose Pine.
- 28:15Speaker 3: There was no doubt that you know somebody that looks
- 28:18like that that lives in rose Pine, small town.
- 28:20Speaker 2: He probably played whatever he.
- 28:22Speaker 9: Wanted, but he was probably really good at basketball. I
- 28:24bet he was like what I bet he was like
- 28:26the three on the basketball.
- 28:27Speaker 6: He's probably really good.
- 28:28Speaker 7: There's can you imagine having to tackle or like try
- 28:31to sack and fry?
- 28:34Speaker 3: Probably, yeah, I've seen some large tumbans out there, but no,
- 28:39not in uh probably like what's rose Pine?
- 28:41Speaker 9: One A, one A two two At most, I don't
- 28:44even know where rose Pine is?
- 28:46Speaker 2: Did you just get country when you said that?
- 28:48Speaker 3: I don't know, I never heard you speak with a
- 28:50country accident.
- 28:51Speaker 2: I don't even know.
- 28:54Speaker 5: I had roast pine. I don't know where, that's no doubt.
- 28:57Speaker 2: All right, all right, we are long for a break.
- 29:00Speaker 3: We'll go ahead and take that, wouldn't we come back
- 29:03Chris Phillips, Let's see if our guys awake, sec unfiltered
- 29:07joins us to break it all down, and we'll do
- 29:09it right here on OTV, off the bench, all.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Right, go to Boudroxelectrical dot com.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Budroxelectrical dot Com is the website, and we've been telling
- 29:19you over the last couple of months as we've been
- 29:21partners with Boudros. There's never a good time for your
- 29:25power to go out and you not to have a plan.
- 29:27But certainly right now, I would say it's the worst
- 29:30time if your power goes out and you don't have
- 29:33a whole home generator to kick right on. When it happens,
- 29:36you're going to be in the hot box. It is
- 29:39going to be hotter than hot, and it is not
- 29:41going to be something that you can stand. It's not
- 29:43going to be fun. You're probably gonna have to go
- 29:45find a hotel to check into because you can't sit
- 29:49there with no ac in South Louisiana. But if you've
- 29:52got a whole home generator from Boudros, you have the
- 29:56ultimate peace of mind.
- 29:57Speaker 8: Yeah, and you can go on our website at Boudros
- 29:59Electric dot Com a request a free dinner. Right quote
- 30:02I got I got a generator two years ago and
- 30:05it was about two years too late. So that's all
- 30:07we're talking about right now is stay cool in this Louisiana, Hea,
- 30:10Boudros Electrical dot Com nine seven fifteen sixty two.
- 30:22Speaker 5: The crowds sash see, don't be hearing me in because
- 30:30you know that.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Ship tigers turn talkers. This is off the bench.
- 30:39Speaker 3: All right, welcome back again, O TV one, O four five, ESPN,
- 30:42Beton Rouge and now are gonna go to the phone lines.
- 30:45Chris Phillips se c unfiltered joins us now to break
- 30:48it all down. What happened on the Diamond over the weekend, Chris,
- 30:52always a pleasure, sir.
- 30:54Speaker 2: Hope you're doing.
- 30:54Speaker 10: Well, Jacob going home, man, I'm doing well. Appreciate you
- 30:58have me on. I'm looking at this as kind of
- 30:59like my redemption visit with you on the show. So
- 31:02after after last week I can confirm in case you
- 31:06were wondering it is a lot easier to wake up
- 31:09and show and go for a radio appearance after you're
- 31:12not out in the town until about three thirty or
- 31:15four in the morning. So we got listen. We're learning
- 31:18as we go, making a dustments, kind of like the
- 31:20LSU baseball team. So yeah, really good to be here, man,
- 31:23appreciate it.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Look, as I told you that day, that is not
- 31:28a big deal at all. As long as I've been
- 31:31doing a morning show, I know that happens. And the
- 31:33fact that I know you were out on Broadway having
- 31:36a good time, and that's the reason that makes it
- 31:39all worth this, bet right.
- 31:40Speaker 2: I mean if it had just been like a normal like.
- 31:42Speaker 3: Yeah, man, I went to bed at ten and I
- 31:44thought I set my alarm, like okay, But at least
- 31:47you got it in like that's all that matters. Like
- 31:49you had a night one day probably are going to
- 31:52remember for a little bit, and it makes it.
- 31:53Speaker 10: All worth it, exactly. If anybody can understand, man, it's
- 31:58it's you. So I really a brother. But yeah, last night,
- 32:02I would say this, the only thing maybe more dramatic
- 32:05than a night out on Broadway is this LSU team
- 32:08at times. But glad to be talking about him going
- 32:11to the Supers and what a weekend. Man, it was
- 32:13a crazy, crazy weekend on the diamond across the league.
- 32:16Speaker 3: I mean it certainly was. And we'll start with LSU
- 32:19and you and I were talking. I'm like, man, and
- 32:21you were gonna come on regardless, which we appreciate.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I was like, man, it's gonna be a whole lot cooler.
- 32:25Speaker 3: If Lshue pulls this off, if the ViBe's gonna be
- 32:28completely different.
- 32:29Speaker 2: And they do.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And look, Chris, there was some coaching decisions and you
- 32:32know this LSU roster that Jay had to make, and
- 32:35he rolls Zach Cowen out there and not Case and
- 32:37Evans to start the game. And Zach Cowen goes out
- 32:41there and kind of what it's been as of late,
- 32:43doesn't have his best stuff, gets touched up a little bit,
- 32:47can't find the strike zone, and Jay Johnson quickly goes
- 32:50to Cason Evans, who was as dominant as you'll see.
- 32:54Speaker 10: Yeah, listen, I would have started Case and Evans. And
- 32:56I'm not Jay Johnson. I'm not smarter than Jay Johnson.
- 32:59I don't know this ball club better than he does,
- 33:01but I'd have to thank moving forward, going into a
- 33:05super regional weekend if they do get to a game three,
- 33:08and certainly going into Omaha. I mean, I feel like
- 33:11Cason's your third best arm. I don't think it's really
- 33:14that much of a debate anymore. I mean, you know,
- 33:17he has the length of a starter. You saw him
- 33:19go one hundred pitches last night. So again, tin Tight's
- 33:23twenty twenty and Cowen's also really really good, and you know,
- 33:26I think he's obviously going to be a huge piece
- 33:28from the other stretch. But yeah, the bottom line is this,
- 33:31I mean, Cason Evans up with stuff a legend, you know,
- 33:33in a moment like that and a situation like that
- 33:36where you needed a guy to come in and hold
- 33:39the line and give the offense in time to you know,
- 33:42to get get it together and put something together. And
- 33:45you know, you got to start with Ethan Frye offensively,
- 33:47and he's just he's seeing a beach ball right now.
- 33:50Really carried the offense to the first felt like what
- 33:53six or seven innings, and then Luisa Nandez has the
- 33:56two home runs and then Bear Jones, you know, Bear
- 33:58finally wakes up from iber and that was his first
- 34:01what extra base hits since May seventeenth to get to
- 34:04South Carolina in the last regular season series. So I mean,
- 34:08we all know they're gonna need him to get going.
- 34:10But you know, I thought it was smart by Jay
- 34:12to move him down in the lineup, I believe, the
- 34:14sixth hole and you know, put him in a different
- 34:16position and just kind of change some things up. But yeah,
- 34:19all in on. I mean, listen, I felt good about
- 34:20LSU going into last night. I mean, I never thought
- 34:23they were gonna lose, but you know, I thought Old
- 34:25Miss was gonna win too. And then you look across
- 34:27what happened over the weekend and you see him down
- 34:30five to one, and I was, I was a little nervous,
- 34:33but really just a gritty, gussy performance by that team.
- 34:37And yeah, listen, Jay Johnson knows what he's doing. But yeah,
- 34:40I would imagine the next time they're in that situation,
- 34:44With all due respect to the other guys and that
- 34:46rotation and that bullpen, I gotta think case and Evans
- 34:49is going to be your Game three guy. You just
- 34:51you have to think so yeah, yeah, you gotta.
- 34:53Speaker 8: Think so yeah, yeah, Chris, what's up? Man's Matt Flann here?
- 34:57Uh second on the job. So it's great to get
- 34:59connected with you man. So you're you're all things SEC man,
- 35:02and so like that's what I really want to hit on.
- 35:04So I've kind of been watching here in all year
- 35:08how dominant SEC baseball is from from top to bottom. Really,
- 35:12so how do you kind of how do you break
- 35:15down how do you talk about you know, all week
- 35:18really only four set SEC teams making it past regionals
- 35:22to super Regionals, and not only not only only four
- 35:25teams making it, but a lot of teams losing to
- 35:27some teams, small.
- 35:28Speaker 2: Teams Murray, Murray State utsa.
- 35:32Speaker 8: Almost lsu with I mean, the the the emergence of
- 35:35these little teams beating these big boy SEC teams that.
- 35:39Speaker 4: Everybody was just that had came in with all the accolades.
- 35:44Speaker 10: Well, yeah, Matt, first thing I'll say you is it's
- 35:46the pleasure chat with you. I remember you one of
- 35:47the first quarterbacks I remember watching as a young SEC fan,
- 35:51So really, uh really good at talk with you and
- 35:53hear from you. But no, I mean listen yet, it
- 35:55was it was a rough weekend for the league. I
- 35:58don't think there's really any other way to put it.
- 36:00And I want to keep that in perspective when I
- 36:02say it, because I don't think it's as bad as
- 36:05we may feel like it is. I was looking back
- 36:07at last year, guys, when the SEC got four teams
- 36:11in Omaha. You know, only five made the Super Regional Round.
- 36:14I mean, this year is four, so like, we're not
- 36:16that far off. Unfortunately, we're only guaranteed a max or
- 36:20I say guarantee, we're only possible a maximum of three
- 36:24SEC teams in Omaha because obviously Arkansas and Tennessee play
- 36:28each other. So but I think when you look at
- 36:30the way that it happened, the number one overall national
- 36:33seed loses, They've become the first ever not even to
- 36:36make it to their regional final. That being in Vandy.
- 36:39You know Texas who won the league. Obviously they lose
- 36:42the UTSA. You know Old Miss gets outed by four
- 36:46seed Maurice State. You know you got Florida in Alabama
- 36:50that both traveled to mid majors. Granted again they had
- 36:54to go on the road, but you felt pretty good
- 36:56about them. They both get outed as well, So you know,
- 37:00I don't want to overreact, but I don't think it's
- 37:03an overreaction to say that it was a bad weekend
- 37:05for the conference, I think, really truly. I mean, you
- 37:07get thirteen teams in the field, only four of those
- 37:11teams advanced guys. You have eight hosts, Yeah, and only
- 37:14only four hosts make it out alive. It's just there's
- 37:18a lot of parody in the game of baseball. But
- 37:20no doubt it was a it was a little bit
- 37:23of a tough look this weekend for the SEC. And
- 37:25I mean, listen, the four that made it, I think
- 37:27are four of the best teams, and they were four
- 37:29of the best teams in the conference all year. But
- 37:32you know, certainly some of those top dogs that you expected.
- 37:35And I didn't even mention Georgia who got walked off
- 37:37Oklaoma State and lost in their home field too. So yeah,
- 37:40it was a tough weekend across the board. But that's
- 37:43one of the reasons we love baseball. It's just truly unpredictable.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Chris, you had like the thing that always happens to
- 37:49me anytime, like I'll have a take, I'll have this.
- 37:51I'm like, they're not they're yet, they're not ready. They're
- 37:54you know, not fraudulent, but close to fraudulent. And you
- 37:57had that kind of with Vandy Baseball and then they
- 37:59go and then win the SEC tournament.
- 38:01Speaker 2: You had to do like the hall. Okay I was wrong.
- 38:03Speaker 3: They actually you were right. You had it right the
- 38:06whole time. They just kind of got hot in Hoover.
- 38:09And I'll be honest with you, Chris, like we can't
- 38:12look at Hoover as anything that we can use I
- 38:16think as like this major like talking point, because like
- 38:20I had so many old miss fans like in my dms,
- 38:23like when they beat LSU and I'm just like, guys,
- 38:25like you realize how LSU played that compared to how
- 38:27you played it, But hey, I got to give you credit,
- 38:30like you actually had Van d penned. It's just everybody
- 38:32wanted to throw hate at you because they won the
- 38:34SEC title in Hoover.
- 38:37Speaker 10: Yeah, I mean, I just felt like Jacobaca, they won
- 38:39that SEC tournament title and they were the number one
- 38:41overall national seed, and you know, I I was pretty
- 38:44pretty vocal about it earlier in the season. I didn't
- 38:47say obviously fired Tim Korban, but I just kind of
- 38:49felt like, hey, there's a certain style they want to play,
- 38:52and it's an old school mentality, and it's just you know,
- 38:55in today's game, it's just hard to win at an
- 38:59elite level that way. And you know, kudos to them,
- 39:02I mean the way they finished up and you know,
- 39:04again to be the number one overall national seed, I
- 39:06wanted to make sure. I mean, I'm a big believer. Listen,
- 39:09you we all and I know you guys are too.
- 39:11You listen, you make your predictions and you give your takes,
- 39:13but more than happy to tip the cap when it's deserving.
- 39:16And I mean they deserved it. But yeah, unfortunately, and
- 39:19I was told by some bandy folks that hey, you know,
- 39:23kudos to you for doing that, but let's wait and
- 39:25make sure that that wasn't premature. And unfortunately, their their
- 39:30work to night here for realizing it was premature. So
- 39:34you know, it's yeah, there's some really there's some really
- 39:38sour feelings today on the West end in Nashville as
- 39:41a whole, because this is a Vanderbilt program that you know,
- 39:44they they're kind of like an LSU. From the standpoint,
- 39:47success is in judge off being a number one overall
- 39:49national seed or winning the SEC tournament. It's about at
- 39:52minimum making supers, going to Omaha's and competing for national
- 39:56championships and that's the game of baseball. It's just like,
- 39:58that's these top tier programs. That's what you judge your
- 40:00season off of. So yeah, then you mentioned I mean
- 40:03Jacob Igreuey Hoover is just its own thing. It's the
- 40:05totally separate you know, there is no I don't know
- 40:09that you can really like include it in the equation
- 40:12of what you're gonna do or not doing the postseas
- 40:14I mean, think about it. The two teams that were
- 40:16in the championship in the SEC tournament, they both got
- 40:19knocked out in their own reasional So what good did
- 40:21it really do to play that deep into the tournament anyways,
- 40:24So you know, there's just no perfect rhyme or reason
- 40:27with it. And you know, again, I think when you
- 40:29look at the teams that advance the supers like LSU,
- 40:32Arkansas and Auburn, those were you could argue those were
- 40:35the top three teams in the league. And then Tennessee,
- 40:38you know, they were very inconsistent up and now, but
- 40:40we know that they're capable of being one of those
- 40:43top three or four teams in the league. From a
- 40:45talent perspective, from a pedigree perspective head coach Tony Vytello. So,
- 40:49you know, the teams that made it very well. I
- 40:52think all four could win a national championship, but I
- 40:55think it's like, is it the bigger storyline the teams
- 40:58that didn't make it. That's what we're allalking about today.
- 41:02Speaker 8: Chris, I'm gonna ask a question, and this I'm not
- 41:05like I hadn't been the biggest baseball guy. Our listeners
- 41:08know that. I'm letting you know that before I asked
- 41:11this question because I don't know kind of the landscape
- 41:14of the SEC coaching from top to bottom right now.
- 41:18But in most sports, if you've got a lot of expectations,
- 41:23you have a difficult and disappointed ending. There's some coach
- 41:28of seats that start to get pretty hot. Do you
- 41:30see any anything like that happening based on weekend results?
- 41:36Speaker 10: No, you know, I'm trying to think across the landscape.
- 41:40Speaker 4: You know.
- 41:40Speaker 10: I think the one that was going to happen already
- 41:42did with Chris Lomonez. And I think they've made a
- 41:45great hire over at Mississippi State with with Brian O'Connor.
- 41:49Just from a pedigree perspective, a guy that's wont a
- 41:51national championship, a guy that understand what it takes to
- 41:54win the current landscape, and he's going to get all
- 41:56the backing the needs. I think State's going to be
- 41:58back up sooner rather than later. But no, outside of that,
- 42:02I mean there's pressure on Mike Bianco, no doubt at
- 42:06Old Miss, but I mean he's he's a legend. I
- 42:09just I don't think you fire that guy after this
- 42:11kind of season. I mean, it's it's so tough, right
- 42:14because there are expectations and you hold your program to
- 42:16a standard, but it's also baseball, and I just I
- 42:20don't know that you can really fire a guy because
- 42:22you got upset in a regional you know, I don't
- 42:27think so, to be honest with you, I'm trying to
- 42:28think the Lamis was the very obvious one going into
- 42:32this season that you knew he was. He was on
- 42:34the hot seat. I think everybody else, even with the losses,
- 42:38like Bandy's not firing Corbyn, Jim Schlosnageles in his first
- 42:41year at Texas, Wes Johnson just got an extension at Georgia.
- 42:46He's not going anywhere now. I think, for the most part,
- 42:49everybody else should be safe.
- 42:52Speaker 4: All right.
- 42:52Speaker 2: There he is Chris Phillips SEC on the Filter Man.
- 42:56Speaker 3: They do a great job covering not only SEC baseball,
- 43:00but everything in the SEC. Look forward to having some
- 43:02football conversations coming up very soon with Chris hey Man.
- 43:06Speaker 2: We appreciate time. Look forward to our next one.
