- 0:00Speaker 1: Back with Jim Morrow. The Yukon Football Coaches Show continues
- 0:03Speaker 1: here on lear Field Coach. We have Chris Freeman a
- 0:06Speaker 1: little bit later on on the show. I want to
- 0:08Speaker 1: talk about him for a moment eight of nine on
- 0:10Speaker 1: the season. You know, I was looking back at his
- 0:14Speaker 1: career here his first year. Yet last year he missed
- 0:17Speaker 1: the field goal on each of his first three games,
- 0:19Speaker 1: and since then he's twenty eight to thirty two. So
- 0:23Speaker 1: I mean it's safe to say he's improving at his craft.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and even when he missed a couple early last year,
- 0:30Speaker 2: I never had any doubt about who he was and
- 0:33Speaker 2: what he would what he would end up doing here.
- 0:35Speaker 2: He's just a very mature, thoughtful, conscientious, serious person. You know,
- 0:43Speaker 2: he really works hard at his craft. I've been fortunate
- 0:46Speaker 2: to be around, you know, some pretty good kickers. I
- 0:49Speaker 2: was able to twice coach a guy named Morton Anderson,
- 0:52Speaker 2: you know, had him in New Orleans, had him in Atlanta.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Who's the leading scorer in NFL history, is in the
- 0:57Speaker 2: Pro Football Hall of Fame. And I'm not saying that,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you know, Chris is headed to the Hall of Fame.
- 1:02Speaker 2: But their approach to their craft is very very similar.
- 1:06Speaker 2: You know, the intention that they had and what they
- 1:09Speaker 2: did on a daily basis to make sure that they
- 1:11Speaker 2: are mentally and physically prepared to go out there on
- 1:13Speaker 2: a Saturday is very, very similar. So he's impressed me
- 1:18Speaker 2: since day one. He impressed me on his visit, just
- 1:20Speaker 2: his approach to not only football but his personal life.
- 1:25Speaker 2: He's just a hell of a good kid.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Yeah, right now, you mentioned Morten Andersen. I just think
- 1:33Speaker 1: of him and every time I'd see him trot on
- 1:35Speaker 1: the field, I'd say, well, there's three points, didn't matter
- 1:37Speaker 1: where they were. That guy was amazing. He was Let's
- 1:42Speaker 1: talk about Joe Ferinnano for a moment here. Now. He's
- 1:44Speaker 1: had a good season obviously, but the last game he
- 1:48Speaker 1: ran six times for sixty four yards, coach a thirty
- 1:51Speaker 1: eight yarder, which was fabulous, and he's been doing that
- 1:55Speaker 1: a little bit more of these last two games. Has
- 1:57Speaker 1: that been a designed thing? Are you trying to get
- 2:00Speaker 1: more involved in that level or is it the way
- 2:03Speaker 1: people are playing against you.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's a combination, Mike. I mean there's some plays that
- 2:08Speaker 2: he you know, there's kind of a handoff run pass option,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and then there's a couple of plays where things weren't
- 2:15Speaker 2: there and he scrambled. And then I think the most
- 2:17Speaker 2: important thing is that Joe has a really great understanding
- 2:20Speaker 2: in space of when to get down, how to absorb
- 2:24Speaker 2: a hit, you know where the opening is going to be.
- 2:29Speaker 2: You know, he doesn't run reckless, and I'm not gonna
- 2:31Speaker 2: say he runs carefully, but he runs very smart and
- 2:35Speaker 2: he does a good job of protecting the ball. If
- 2:37Speaker 2: you watch him, anytime someone comes near, he's getting to
- 2:39Speaker 2: five points of pressure and he's protecting the football. So
- 2:42Speaker 2: those are very important things. But anytime your quarterback can
- 2:45Speaker 2: be a threat as a runner, it makes your offense
- 2:48Speaker 2: harder to defend. And that doesn't mean he has to
- 2:51Speaker 2: run every down. But if it presents itself and he
- 2:53Speaker 2: can go get us five or six yards or seven
- 2:55Speaker 2: yards and break a big one like he did, then
- 3:00Speaker 2: then we'll take it. We'll take it.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just another thing for defenses to have to
- 3:05Speaker 1: be concerned with. I want to mention Oliver Lundberg Coleman.
- 3:08Speaker 1: He's been getting a few reps lately. The running back
- 3:12Speaker 1: from from Europe five carries thirty one yards, he had
- 3:16Speaker 1: an eleven yarder. He runs hard. This guy, I mean
- 3:20Speaker 1: I was, you know, he seems like the kind of
- 3:22Speaker 1: guy that is a real football player, and obviously you
- 3:25Speaker 1: want as many of those as you can find.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like a he's a battering ram, he's a
- 3:29Speaker 2: bowling ball. He's a great kid. He loves football. He's sweetish.
- 3:33Speaker 2: You know, you just don't, you know, you know, stereotypically
- 3:37Speaker 2: you think, you know, sweetish, really really nice, and he
- 3:40Speaker 2: is really really nice when he gets the ball in
- 3:42Speaker 2: his hands. He runs violent and he he tries to
- 3:44Speaker 2: run through people. And you know when you have backs
- 3:47Speaker 2: like that, which we have a bunch of them, it
- 3:49Speaker 2: energizes your team, you know, I mean it really does.
- 3:52Speaker 2: It's just you know, you see him run over a safety,
- 3:56Speaker 2: run over a corner man. The next rep that corner
- 3:59Speaker 2: doesn't want to hit him again. So you know, having
- 4:02Speaker 2: Cam having victor having MJ having having Alie. I mean,
- 4:07Speaker 2: those are you know guys that they're not easy to tackle.
- 4:10Speaker 2: They're big, physical guys.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah, and you're not going to get you know, one
- 4:14Speaker 1: hundred and twenty yards every game from Cam Edwards. So
- 4:17Speaker 1: you'd like to get that, but sometimes you don't. And
- 4:20Speaker 1: then I mean when you throw a kind of a
- 4:22Speaker 1: curveball at the other team, and that's kind of a positive.
- 4:26Speaker 1: I would think you got a few options that the
- 4:28Speaker 1: defense has to be concerned with.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, in the old days, you know, you could play
- 4:32Speaker 2: with one really good running back, but with the tempo
- 4:35Speaker 2: football and the number of plays that you're running now
- 4:38Speaker 2: in modern football, you've got to have you know, you've
- 4:41Speaker 2: got to have a pretty good stable of running backs,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and we're fortunate to have that. You know, we lost
- 4:46Speaker 2: mel who obviously has you know, been a damn good
- 4:49Speaker 2: player around here, so, you know, feeling comfortable with the
- 4:54Speaker 2: four I mentioned, and then also being able to put
- 4:57Speaker 2: Terrence back in there, you know, and let him to
- 5:00Speaker 2: carry the ball once in a while as a speed
- 5:02Speaker 2: change up has been a good thing for us.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah. On the wide out scene, Skyler Bell continues to
- 5:08Speaker 1: do great things. Six catches in that game, thirty yards
- 5:11Speaker 1: after catch, that's the part I like. And that touchdown
- 5:13Speaker 1: he scored. When you when you made the completion, Joe
- 5:17Speaker 1: Finano made the throw, you figured it, okay, that's a slant. Well,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you know, we'll move it down the field a little bit.
- 5:22Speaker 1: But he turned that into six and with a burst,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and that was impressive.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you know the way he caught it, and the
- 5:29Speaker 2: way he caught it, you thought, hey, he's gonna he's
- 5:31Speaker 2: gonna get tackled. But you know, besides him being a
- 5:34Speaker 2: really elusive oatenfield runner, Juice got down and made a
- 5:37Speaker 2: really nice black block. Schamar got down and made a
- 5:41Speaker 2: really nice block. Cam got down and made a really
- 5:43Speaker 2: nice block. So that, to me is just an indication
- 5:45Speaker 2: of unselfish players. You know, guys that are saying, hey,
- 5:48Speaker 2: I didn't get the ball, but let me go get
- 5:49Speaker 2: my friend into the end zone. And to me, that's
- 5:52Speaker 2: really good team football. You love him when the ball's
- 5:55Speaker 2: in Skyler's hands, and you love it even more when
- 5:58Speaker 2: guys like Cam and Juice are down there and making
- 6:01Speaker 2: sure he gets into the end zone unhit.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and Jamar porter at three catches in the game too,
- 6:06Speaker 1: a thirteen yard are included. All right, we'll be back
- 6:08Speaker 1: quick time out. Jim Morrow with Us is the Yukon
- 6:11Speaker 1: Football Coaches show on Learfield.
