- 0:00Speaker 1: Wow, you're listening to the Mark Simone show on the
- 0:03Speaker 1: seven wo R. Well, let's third of the Dean himself,
- 0:08Speaker 1: the greatest political consultant the Hall, Ed Rollins. He's run
- 0:11Speaker 1: more campaigns successful campaigns than anybody. Ed Rollins, How you doing?
- 0:17Speaker 2: Good morning? Mark?
- 0:18Speaker 1: Are you I'm good?
- 0:19Speaker 2: Hey?
- 0:19Speaker 1: You probably get this all the time. People say what's
- 0:21Speaker 1: going to happen in the midterm? So who's going to
- 0:23Speaker 1: win the midterm? Predicting that is like predicting the twenty
- 0:26Speaker 1: twenty eighth Super Bowl. I mean, the landscape is going
- 0:29Speaker 1: to change between now and then, isn't it.
- 0:31Speaker 2: It's going to change dramatically. I mean, I think here's
- 0:34Speaker 2: what does happen though. I can sort of go to
- 0:36Speaker 2: a fifty years street members go home and holidays and
- 0:42Speaker 2: their family gets all together, and they basically they do
- 0:45Speaker 2: I really want to do this for another two years
- 0:47Speaker 2: or four years to any of them ambitious or either
- 0:51Speaker 2: senators do I want to do? You want to run
- 0:53Speaker 2: for another re election? So oftentimes in January there's a
- 0:57Speaker 2: number that's say, thank you very much, I've had enough
- 0:59Speaker 2: of this, so I'm going to run for something else.
- 1:01Speaker 2: As of right now, they're fifty three members who announced
- 1:04Speaker 2: that they're not going to run for re election, forty
- 1:07Speaker 2: three zeros or House members to the other tenor US senators.
- 1:12Speaker 2: And I think to a certain extent that the recruitment
- 1:15Speaker 2: is going to go on now is because Democrats do
- 1:17Speaker 2: think they're going to win this House so easily and
- 1:20Speaker 2: there's a possibility and they're going to win the Senate.
- 1:23Speaker 2: They're out there recruiting anxiously. What we're trying to do
- 1:26Speaker 2: is that the president's team has to do is to
- 1:27Speaker 2: sort of make sure that the vulnerable incomes are getting
- 1:30Speaker 2: ready to run for reelection. It's the year long process.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Seems like year is a long time, but it's not
- 1:37Speaker 2: in politics. So they leave Christmas, you'll probably see in
- 1:40Speaker 2: January and other ten or fifteen members thank you very much.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I've had a nice career, and they start looking our
- 1:46Speaker 2: retirement and then you fill on the blanks and begin
- 1:49Speaker 2: in February to start running and running hard. The president's
- 1:53Speaker 2: agenda ahead of him is an aggressive one and it's
- 1:55Speaker 2: a tough one getting the budgets through and what have you,
- 1:59Speaker 2: and are so small that he has both the House
- 2:01Speaker 2: and the Senate, but his task and stuff.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so when you say, some people may leave Congress.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I don't need this anymore. Let me leave. What did
- 2:09Speaker 1: they do that They can make a lot of money, right,
- 2:11Speaker 1: lobbying or something like that.
- 2:12Speaker 2: So some can some very very few members go back home.
- 2:16Speaker 2: They all promise they're going to go back home. Some
- 2:21Speaker 2: you know, people say, well, you know when they when
- 2:23Speaker 2: you decide to quit, come work for me. Uh, and
- 2:26Speaker 2: some just you know, decide this is not what it's
- 2:28Speaker 2: not what I want to spend my time. This sort
- 2:30Speaker 2: of been a very frustrating year. If you were bubbled
- 2:33Speaker 2: them to be in the Congress and you get the
- 2:35Speaker 2: big bill best which obviously normally you have lots of
- 2:39Speaker 2: builds that you passed, but they combined it all on
- 2:41Speaker 2: one thing, so there's not a lot of activity, and
- 2:44Speaker 2: and uh, you know, they want to They went home
- 2:46Speaker 2: for a period of time. They getting beat up for
- 2:48Speaker 2: that a certain extent. So so I would say when
- 2:51Speaker 2: I was the chairman of the Congression Committee co chairman,
- 2:54Speaker 2: people said say why don't you run for Congress? I say,
- 2:57Speaker 2: thank you very much. I might be behind the scenes.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I don't want I don't want to spend my day
- 3:01Speaker 2: arguing with four unor thirty five other people every day,
- 3:04Speaker 2: and I think to a certain extent, that's where a
- 3:06Speaker 2: lot of members may be. Once that numbers changed and
- 3:09Speaker 2: altered in the sense we know how many running, then
- 3:12Speaker 2: the race is going to begin.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Hey, ed Rellands, if the healthcare if they don't fix
- 3:17Speaker 1: this healthcare situation, put a patch on it or something,
- 3:20Speaker 1: healthcare costs are going to go nuts. It's the fault
- 3:24Speaker 1: of Obama and Obamacare. But isn't Aren't there Republicans going
- 3:27Speaker 1: to get blamed for it?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Oh? Yes, absolutely, there's no question Republicans is going to
- 3:32Speaker 2: We've not had a consistent healthcare plan in twenty years.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We used to have some real experts on it when
- 3:40Speaker 2: Bob Dole was the leader because of his only personal
- 3:43Speaker 2: healthcare problems over the years, he knew a lot about healthcare.
- 3:46Speaker 2: He had a chief of staff, Sheila Burke, who was
- 3:48Speaker 2: a nurse, to do a lot about healthcare. We don't
- 3:51Speaker 2: have a lot of experts now. And you know our
- 3:53Speaker 2: premise of you know, let's have savings accounts and what
- 3:56Speaker 2: have you. If I gave you a two thousand dollars
- 3:58Speaker 2: savings account, which is with a new Ginger plan, is uh,
- 4:02Speaker 2: you'll go from that real quick. First time you get
- 4:04Speaker 2: to a doctor, h and if there's anything that happens
- 4:07Speaker 2: to you, you know, the cost or astronomical. So not
- 4:13Speaker 2: only will twenty two million people be affected by this,
- 4:16Speaker 2: the reality is their costs will go up dramatically. Those
- 4:20Speaker 2: who can afford a lot of America's going to say
- 4:22Speaker 2: I can't afford it. I'm just not gonna and that
- 4:24Speaker 2: creates a real chaos. The best cursed Republicans can do
- 4:28Speaker 2: is stand this thing for year, Uh, subsidies. Democrats aren't
- 4:33Speaker 2: going to do that because obviously they want they want
- 4:36Speaker 2: to get to the next election with the rise and
- 4:38Speaker 2: prices and what have you. So I think, to a
- 4:40Speaker 2: certain extent, we've got we've got a couple of months
- 4:42Speaker 2: here real chaos with those those here solutions, I would
- 4:46Speaker 2: say this point in time, we're not We're not gonna
- 4:48Speaker 2: the healthcare is not gonna get fisted a short period
- 4:50Speaker 2: of time.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Well I'm not an expert, but uh, just common sense,
- 4:54Speaker 1: I would think if you let the government take over healthcare,
- 4:57Speaker 1: the cost is going to go way up. It wouldn't
- 4:59Speaker 1: that be true?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Absolutely well, to a certain extent, the government does pay
- 5:03Speaker 2: them the past. If you are to health care today,
- 5:06Speaker 2: and it's you know, I don't think that Kennedy is
- 5:11Speaker 2: ready to do that. Start care of pills to the
- 5:13Speaker 2: unis versus President. I don't think it's hider to do that.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I think the President's got a lot of misplay, I
- 5:19Speaker 2: think to a certain extent. But most Americans are going
- 5:21Speaker 2: to suffer measurably about this because even if you have
- 5:25Speaker 2: health insurance today been a private company, because of the
- 5:28Speaker 2: burden of im twenty two million people from the Obamacare program,
- 5:33Speaker 2: he's going to find their or creature going to walk.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Healthcare rates are not going down. They haven't gone down
- 5:39Speaker 2: a long long time. And it's an expensive entity and
- 5:41Speaker 2: there's a a lot of people that are experts on
- 5:44Speaker 2: it who are not very happy with what we have.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Yeah, Ed Robins, if you want to run in twenty
- 5:49Speaker 1: twenty eight, Gavin Newsom or whoever, if you want to
- 5:52Speaker 1: run in twenty twenty eight, what should you be doing now?
- 5:54Speaker 1: Is there anything you can really do now for that?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Sure, you can raise money, the line up your support
- 6:00Speaker 2: reason lane of your team. I mean there's four or
- 6:03Speaker 2: five of them that are running right now. And what
- 6:05Speaker 2: you try and do is you tap into easy advantage
- 6:08Speaker 2: of the interm elections to go out and made friends
- 6:11Speaker 2: around the country in key states. Uh. You know, I
- 6:14Speaker 2: think Cavenuwson is going to do is just continue to
- 6:16Speaker 2: beat up on Trump and fight with Trump, and that
- 6:18Speaker 2: seems to be working for him. He is a mess
- 6:21Speaker 2: of the state in California. No one's talking about the
- 6:23Speaker 2: mess in California. Nobody's talking about what a great job
- 6:26Speaker 2: he's doing. Beat that by the President. They say the
- 6:28Speaker 2: same thing in Illinois. So my sense is those who
- 6:31Speaker 2: are gonna run, it's gonna be four or five at
- 6:33Speaker 2: least some new governors that may will have some political
- 6:37Speaker 2: ambition beyond where they are. It's gonna be a full field.
- 6:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. In the old days that Reagan came from
- 6:43Speaker 1: California and one but nowadays it's been a one party
- 6:46Speaker 1: state for so long. Guys like Gavin Newsom, Kamala Harris,
- 6:50Speaker 1: they've never been tested in two party states. So aren't
- 6:53Speaker 1: isn't anybody from California gonna have a problem trying to
- 6:55Speaker 1: run nationally?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Well, you move out, you move out of like California.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Why you haven't had any competitions in California is they
- 7:03Speaker 2: basically created a system instead of a Republican or a
- 7:06Speaker 2: Democrat winning the nominations and running against each other, the
- 7:08Speaker 2: top two get nominated, so it could be two Democrats
- 7:12Speaker 2: running against each other and two Republicans. It's ever happened
- 7:18Speaker 2: that way. But the reality is as kinds the one
- 7:21Speaker 2: party system. So the reality is, I mean, he doesn't
- 7:25Speaker 2: want to talk about California. He wants to talk about
- 7:27Speaker 2: nationally what what Trump has not done as opposed to
- 7:29Speaker 2: what he has done. And he's you know, he's I
- 7:33Speaker 2: don't get it, but he's a charismatic figure. He's got
- 7:35Speaker 2: a fifty four to fifty five percent approwal rating in California,
- 7:38Speaker 2: which is pretty mess and which California has not been
- 7:41Speaker 2: in play since, you know, since Bush and the eighty eight.
- 7:44Speaker 2: You know, it's a it's a hard state for us
- 7:46Speaker 2: to win, and I think to a herd extent, it
- 7:48Speaker 2: needs to be an easy state.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Force well, and Rollin's brilliant as always, Keep up the
- 7:53Speaker 1: great work and we'll talk again soon.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Had a wonderful holiday and a happy honka to all yours.
