Latest / Birdland Territory / Orioles trending up after 7-3 homestand
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Pretty big homestand for the Baltimore Orioles as they go
- 0:09Speaker 1: seven and three against three teams and now hit the road.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome in latest edition of Birdland Territory with Steve, Brad
- 0:18Speaker 1: and Tim And. I think we all felt, guys, before
- 0:21Speaker 1: that long home stand began, they needed to roll off
- 0:24Speaker 1: some wins, pretty vital homestand, and they got it done right.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So I'm not ready to say that's the season turning
- 0:33Speaker 1: homestand because you need more evidence, I think, but you
- 0:37Speaker 1: can't have a thirty game run without starting it with
- 0:40Speaker 1: a ten game run, So that's the hope. I think
- 0:44Speaker 1: around Birdland today, what did you guys think about how
- 0:47Speaker 1: important that stand was and things you liked about it.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it was really important.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I think them just going out there and getting some
- 0:55Speaker 3: wins and just get getting headed in the right direction.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I think it was the most important thing, and they
- 0:59Speaker 3: did that. They hit well, but to me it was
- 1:02Speaker 3: the starting pitching. The starting pitching really had a great
- 1:05Speaker 3: homestand collectively as a group, I just think they set
- 1:09Speaker 3: the tone really well for all the games they had,
- 1:11Speaker 3: and they faced some good competition. So to go there
- 1:13Speaker 3: and have a seven to three home stand like they did.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I really liked what I saw, and I think this
- 1:18Speaker 3: is the kind of what we kind of expected to
- 1:21Speaker 3: see this team do throughout the entire year, and I
- 1:23Speaker 3: think it's a good start and hopefully things can keep
- 1:26Speaker 3: rolling from.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Here as they head on this next road trip.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one of those things, Steve, right, you can't say,
- 1:32Speaker 4: all right, print the playoff tickets right now, But if
- 1:35Speaker 4: the Orioles do end up making the playoffs, I think
- 1:38Speaker 4: we will look back to this home stand because Brad,
- 1:42Speaker 4: You're right, the pitching was the headliner, but to me,
- 1:46Speaker 4: it was sort of a carryover from what we've seen
- 1:49Speaker 4: a lot so far this year. This team fights, they
- 1:52Speaker 4: really do. Five of the seven wins were come from
- 1:55Speaker 4: behind wins this series, and of course the Memorial Day
- 2:00Speaker 4: comeback against the Rays and extra innings was fantastic. Saturday
- 2:04Speaker 4: was unbelievable where you're trailing four runs heading into the
- 2:08Speaker 4: ninth inning and then coming from behind to win that game.
- 2:11Speaker 4: I think it It really was the most complete home stand,
- 2:15Speaker 4: you know, in terms of pitching offense, and I know
- 2:19Speaker 4: there were some defensive blunders guys, but all in all,
- 2:22Speaker 4: the home stand as the as a whole. I felt
- 2:25Speaker 4: like the defense at least held its own and made
- 2:28Speaker 4: some standout plays. And even going back to that start
- 2:30Speaker 4: that Trey Gibson had, I thought the defense was spectacular
- 2:33Speaker 4: in that game.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I think they're trending up all three fascints. We could
- 2:38Speaker 1: add the offense seventy seven runs the last fourteen games.
- 2:42Speaker 1: That's five and a half the game. That's where we
- 2:44Speaker 1: thought was kind of a top bend for this offense.
- 2:47Speaker 1: They might average five or more games. Some teams are
- 2:49Speaker 1: averaging that this year, and they've been hitting more home runs.
- 2:52Speaker 1: That's impressive too. So a lot of things are coming
- 2:55Speaker 1: together and had to in a seven to three home stand.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It was in a emotional home stand. You had the
- 3:02Speaker 1: early walkoff wins by Cowser, you had incredible ninth inning
- 3:07Speaker 1: obviously Saturday night to final eight batters, go from five
- 3:10Speaker 1: to one down to a six to five walk off.
- 3:13Speaker 1: You blew a five nothing lead in there on Friday night.
- 3:17Speaker 1: I mean, if you don't want a motion in baseball,
- 3:20Speaker 1: don't follow the twenty twenty six Orioles.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Yeah, they had a little they had a little bit
- 3:25Speaker 3: of mix and everything there, and I think the toughest part,
- 3:28Speaker 3: like we've talked about all the year.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Is getting behind the eight ball with their record because they're.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Gonna have games where the bullpens are the bullpen's just
- 3:34Speaker 3: not going to perform. It's part of a baseball season,
- 3:36Speaker 3: and I think that's where we were just kind of
- 3:38Speaker 3: hoping they didn't get that eight to nine, ten games
- 3:41Speaker 3: below five hundred, because they could have won those two
- 3:43Speaker 3: games that they lost against.
- 3:45Speaker 2: The Blue Jays.
- 3:46Speaker 3: But then they came back in and scored five in
- 3:48Speaker 3: the nine. So it's baseball just has this top up
- 3:50Speaker 3: and down and you kind of kind of ride the
- 3:52Speaker 3: roller coaster type thing. But that was definitely a homestand
- 3:54Speaker 3: that if you're weak of the heart, you don't want
- 3:56Speaker 3: to follow this team and watch those games, because there
- 3:58Speaker 3: was there was some up and down during that homestand
- 4:00Speaker 3: but overall, like we said, it was a great homestand
- 4:04Speaker 3: I thought Pete.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Put it best when he was doing the walk off
- 4:07Speaker 4: interview with Massens Saturday, essentially saying like, yeah, we should
- 4:10Speaker 4: have won the game Friday. The Blue Jays probably should
- 4:13Speaker 4: have won the game Saturday, and baseball has its way
- 4:16Speaker 4: of evening things out. But it was great to see
- 4:19Speaker 4: Pete come through in that moment, because we know that
- 4:23Speaker 4: he's been a machine over the course of his career
- 4:25Speaker 4: in terms of runners and scoring position. But up until
- 4:28Speaker 4: that moment, he was zero for eight this season with
- 4:32Speaker 4: bases loaded. So for him to come through in that
- 4:34Speaker 4: spot I thought was really really big. And guys, you
- 4:38Speaker 4: can go back to April twenty eighth. Now for Pete Alonso,
- 4:42Speaker 4: he's fourth in the majors in RBIs, so he's starting
- 4:46Speaker 4: to be that force driving in runs.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Yeah, we see he'll go to write and write center
- 4:52Speaker 1: for homers and even the game winning single the other night.
- 4:55Speaker 1: And I think the emotion he shows out on the field, well,
- 5:00Speaker 1: it's clear by now we've seen enough it's genuine. This
- 5:03Speaker 1: guy isn't just this is what a leader should do.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I should raw Rod here. This is how he feels
- 5:08Speaker 1: when something good happens, especially for teammates. And I think, Brad,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you've been in clubhouses with guys who have genuine passion
- 5:16Speaker 1: for their team and that must be meaningful.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Yeah, it is, and especially when it's a guy like Pete,
- 5:23Speaker 3: you know, the big signing we've talked about this offseason,
- 5:25Speaker 3: and he comes over and he's just a genuine guy
- 5:27Speaker 3: when he's out in the field, everything you see is genuine.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I don't think I don't think there's anything that's kind of,
- 5:32Speaker 3: you know, manufactured. He just goes out there and he
- 5:36Speaker 3: is who he is, and he just enjoys the game.
- 5:38Speaker 3: He enjoys his teammates. And I think that's kind of
- 5:40Speaker 3: a theme with this team that a lot of the
- 5:41Speaker 3: guys I've talked about how this clubhouse is really close
- 5:44Speaker 3: and really cheer for each other, and I think they
- 5:46Speaker 3: really truly do. And I think that is a really
- 5:49Speaker 3: big X factor that could get this team over the
- 5:51Speaker 3: hump here moving forward and kind of keep this momentum,
- 5:54Speaker 3: hopefully for this road trip and further on.
- 5:57Speaker 4: And Steve again go back to the walk off interview
- 6:01Speaker 4: on mathon one of the first things he says, Hey,
- 6:04Speaker 4: I don't have that chance to have that moment if
- 6:07Speaker 4: the guys before me didn't do their job. And that
- 6:10Speaker 4: was so much of the talk about Pete Alonzo coming here,
- 6:14Speaker 4: where it wasn't just the on field production, it was
- 6:18Speaker 4: the off the field leadership. It was who this guy
- 6:22Speaker 4: is inside of the clubhouse. And you know, I go
- 6:25Speaker 4: back to Ben MacDonald, an interview that we had with
- 6:27Speaker 4: him on my show on one of five seven, the
- 6:30Speaker 4: fan just him bringing up to Craig Albernaz during spring training,
- 6:34Speaker 4: like you haven't had that type of guy, Like that
- 6:36Speaker 4: type of guy has not been here over the past
- 6:39Speaker 4: couple of years, and now he is. And I think
- 6:41Speaker 4: you see the impact.
- 6:44Speaker 1: The comebacks Saturday night. This is how rare that was
- 6:51Speaker 1: entering the ninth down by at least four runs and
- 6:53Speaker 1: winning in the ninth has now happened three times in
- 6:56Speaker 1: oral history, which dates to nineteen fifty four. It happened
- 7:00Speaker 1: in nineteen fifty eight, it happened in nineteen ninety five,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and it happened Saturday night, So that is pretty remarkable.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And the Blue Jays got the first out of the
- 7:11Speaker 1: inning guys no one was on base. They didn't get
- 7:13Speaker 1: another out eight Street Orioles reached. The game ended with
- 7:17Speaker 1: the Orioles having one out, which they got to start
- 7:20Speaker 1: the inning. They were two outs away with no one
- 7:22Speaker 1: on base, and the Orioles won sixty five. Let's get
- 7:26Speaker 1: back to the starting pitching. Here are the numbers. Kyle
- 7:29Speaker 1: Bradish last five starts one seventy two, Shane Boss three
- 7:34Speaker 1: straight quality starts two twenty five, Brandon Young four games
- 7:40Speaker 1: two forty two A no. By the way, for the
- 7:43Speaker 1: year three thirty five ra Chris Bassett two quality starts
- 7:46Speaker 1: in his last four games three point eighty. That's playoff
- 7:50Speaker 1: caliber pitching. The week link is Trevor Rodgers, who was
- 7:56Speaker 1: rolling Friday night and then suddenly he wasn't Saturday. I
- 8:01Speaker 1: was at the pregame and Albernas talked extensively about how
- 8:07Speaker 1: he felt he was gonna take the positive from that
- 8:10Speaker 1: even though it ended so badly. And I'm wondering, both
- 8:13Speaker 1: of you guys, what you think how hard that is
- 8:16Speaker 1: to do when you rolling for six innings and it
- 8:19Speaker 1: all fell apart in the span of ten pitches. Now
- 8:22Speaker 1: here's another thing Albernas said which I didn't know or
- 8:25Speaker 1: see from Saturday. After the game. Zach Eflyn, who's out
- 8:30Speaker 1: for the year, was leading the charge of the locker
- 8:34Speaker 1: room and saying, we're you were great tonight. We're rolling
- 8:38Speaker 1: with that, just building up Trevor Rodgers, who we know
- 8:41Speaker 1: can be an emotional guy, and he said, axt zach
- 8:45Speaker 1: Ethlyn has just been a great teammate since he's been
- 8:49Speaker 1: out and doing these types of things, And Brad, does
- 8:52Speaker 1: that have importance in the clubhouse.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's huge.
- 8:56Speaker 3: And I think the fact that zach Ethlyn's Athlyn is
- 8:59Speaker 3: even around tells you what kind of guy and what
- 9:01Speaker 3: kind of teammate he is, because a lot of times
- 9:04Speaker 3: when guys have season any injuries, they go to the
- 9:06Speaker 3: spring training home or they're kind of in and out
- 9:09Speaker 3: throughout the year. But the fact that he's there in
- 9:11Speaker 3: the locker room and it's still a presence tells you
- 9:13Speaker 3: everything you need to know about him and the starting
- 9:16Speaker 3: group you can tell as a whole really.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Has each other's back.
- 9:19Speaker 3: They are going to each other after their outings, they're
- 9:22Speaker 3: sitting near each other in the dugouts, and a lot
- 9:24Speaker 3: of times that doesn't seem to happen. I think on
- 9:25Speaker 3: a lot of teams I've been on, you have a
- 9:27Speaker 3: couple guys who will kind of gravitate towards each other.
- 9:29Speaker 3: But you can tell this is a really close knit group.
- 9:32Speaker 3: And I hope Trevor Rodgers is able to take that
- 9:34Speaker 3: six strong innings. I mean that was six really strong innings.
- 9:37Speaker 3: It wasn't like he was kind of dodging, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 3: big innings or stuff like. I mean, he was really
- 9:42Speaker 3: really good for those six innings and Unfortunately it kind
- 9:45Speaker 3: of just unraveled there in the seventh. But I hope
- 9:48Speaker 3: he really can take this depositives from that outing and
- 9:51Speaker 3: carry forward, because that's the kind of picture this team's
- 9:53Speaker 3: expects to have, and they know that he can go
- 9:56Speaker 3: out there and give.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Those kind of outings. Outing after outing.
- 10:00Speaker 4: We're starting to see him trend upwards. And remember when
- 10:05Speaker 4: we did the episode of his prior start where we're
- 10:07Speaker 4: saying that Steve, you used the line, like you know,
- 10:10Speaker 4: some pitchers just two pitches. But it kind of was
- 10:13Speaker 4: with the Homers in that prior start, and then this
- 10:17Speaker 4: one he was so pitch effishent guys like I know
- 10:21Speaker 4: Albertas and he fell on the sword postgame saying I
- 10:24Speaker 4: probably should have pulled him, but fine with him sending
- 10:28Speaker 4: him back out for the seventh. Guys, he was.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Seventy pitches through six innings. I think you let him
- 10:35Speaker 5: keep rolling. He retired twelve straight batters at one point
- 10:38Speaker 5: in that start. It's really unfortunate how it ended, you know,
- 10:44Speaker 5: but I think that there's something that Trevor Rodgers can
- 10:47Speaker 5: really build off of where you're starting to see him
- 10:50Speaker 5: trend upwards.
- 10:53Speaker 1: We are, and he was getting in the kitchen to
- 10:55Speaker 1: the right handed hitters. That was so big. Pitching in
- 10:58Speaker 1: to right opens everything else up for Trevor Rodgers. That
- 11:02Speaker 1: is what he did so well last year. And Albert
- 11:05Speaker 1: has noted that, and he also noted that Ethlyn is
- 11:08Speaker 1: the ultimate hype man in there, which I always a
- 11:10Speaker 1: great line. And I mean, zach Eflyn is an elite teammate.
- 11:15Speaker 1: That's what he's been described as. And so it's nice
- 11:18Speaker 1: to know if he can't do things on the field
- 11:20Speaker 1: for the Orioles, he might be doing wonders off the
- 11:22Speaker 1: field behind the scenes in the clubhouse. Right now, let's
- 11:27Speaker 1: talk about some other topics here. Coming up on Birdland
- 11:31Speaker 1: territory there is presented by a fan dol and we're
- 11:39Speaker 1: going to nominate a familiar name here, Samuel Bissio, to
- 11:42Speaker 1: maybe pop one in Fenway Park. And right now, you
- 11:45Speaker 1: could pick a lot of Orioles for the daily Dingers.
- 11:47Speaker 1: By the way, they're hitting more homers. They've hit like
- 11:50Speaker 1: one in thirteen in the last fourteen games, something like that.
- 11:54Speaker 1: But Samuel Bisaio, guys, is a great choice. Right now.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Here are some of the numbers from May that the
- 12:02Speaker 1: month that just ended his ops in May was nine.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Hang on here, guy, I got it somewhere. Three yeah,
- 12:13Speaker 1: three or four ten. Let's flip a coin. But three
- 12:16Speaker 1: point thirty eight was his average, five to ninety seven
- 12:19Speaker 1: was his slug eight sixty one is his ops on
- 12:23Speaker 1: the year, and among oriel regulars, he's first in batting average,
- 12:27Speaker 1: slugging ops, third in Homer's fifth, and RBIs pretty special.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Young Geitner right now, who, by the way, in mid
- 12:35Speaker 1: April's ops are like five hundred. I don't think anybody remembers.
- 12:38Speaker 2: That now, No, definitely not.
- 12:41Speaker 3: And I just I can't get over the fact that
- 12:44Speaker 3: he's stole only twenty one years old. Like it's I
- 12:46Speaker 3: think that that that fact cannot be lost on Orioles fans,
- 12:50Speaker 3: that this guy is such a talented bat and talented
- 12:54Speaker 3: player overall, and he's still so young. It's just been
- 12:57Speaker 3: so impressive to get off to the start that he
- 12:59Speaker 3: had to be where he is right now starting June.
- 13:02Speaker 2: It's just it's it's unbelievable. It's for a young.
- 13:05Speaker 3: Guy to be able to manage the struggles he had
- 13:08Speaker 3: early and turn the season around the way he has
- 13:11Speaker 3: and just be a formidable middle of the line of
- 13:13Speaker 3: bat has been extremely impressive. And to me, it's just
- 13:16Speaker 3: the power to all fields. The home run the other night,
- 13:18Speaker 3: to the backside, to left center field, and then he
- 13:20Speaker 3: has a pull power like everybody knows, but to just
- 13:23Speaker 3: use all fields and he's just he's got He's just
- 13:26Speaker 3: been really impressive. I've been super impressed on both sides
- 13:28Speaker 3: of the ball. But obviously is bad here as shining
- 13:31Speaker 3: this last month.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I know the stats a little dated, but Sam has
- 13:37Speaker 4: only gotten better since this stretch. But Basil at the
- 13:41Speaker 4: forty four game mark, so this was about a week ago,
- 13:45Speaker 4: he became just one of four catchers in MLB history
- 13:50Speaker 4: to post an OPS of over eight ten through their
- 13:54Speaker 4: first forty four games in age twenty one season. Pud
- 13:58Speaker 4: Rodriguez in ninety three, Darrel Porter in seventy three, Johnny
- 14:01Speaker 4: Bench in nineteen sixty nine, and Joe Tory in nineteen
- 14:06Speaker 4: sixty one. So that's pretty good, pretty good company for
- 14:11Speaker 4: Sam Pelosio to be in. Guys, I just I continue
- 14:15Speaker 4: to point back to that Kansas City game because heading
- 14:19Speaker 4: into that first one, you're right, Steve, he had a
- 14:21Speaker 4: five thirty three OPS and that was through what the
- 14:24Speaker 4: first sixteen games at that point, and since then he
- 14:28Speaker 4: has just really taken off guys. And what's crazy is
- 14:32Speaker 4: we're not even in the true summer yet, when when
- 14:35Speaker 4: it's getting really hot and that ball's really gonna be flying.
- 14:39Speaker 4: But Sam's at the point now where I know there
- 14:42Speaker 4: was an instance last week I think was the first
- 14:45Speaker 4: two games of the Blue Jays series where he wasn't
- 14:48Speaker 4: in the starting lineup back to back days because the
- 14:50Speaker 4: Blue Jays were tossing lefties. And I'm at the point
- 14:53Speaker 4: where man just let him face a left handed pitching.
- 14:57Speaker 4: I know Craig alvert As has talked in the past
- 14:59Speaker 4: about him that confidence in Sam facing left handed pitching,
- 15:03Speaker 4: But I think we're beyond the portion of his early
- 15:06Speaker 4: part of his career where you're sitting him back to
- 15:09Speaker 4: back days as long as he's healthy, of course, because
- 15:12Speaker 4: you want that bad in the lineup as much as possible.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Yep. And they signed him through twenty thirty three. By
- 15:19Speaker 1: the way, that deal with a team option for twenty
- 15:22Speaker 1: thirty four potentially bought out three free agent years. And
- 15:26Speaker 1: when he has his grandkids on his knee, many many
- 15:28Speaker 1: years from now, I'm going to tell him about August
- 15:30Speaker 1: of twenty twenty five. Well, when they to span about
- 15:33Speaker 1: ten days, he got called up, turned twenty one and
- 15:37Speaker 1: got a new contract. Pretty remarkable for the kid from
- 15:41Speaker 1: the Dominican Republic. Samuel Bissio is our pick for Daily Dingers.

- 16:14Speaker 1: So, guys coming up for the Oriols a pretty important
- 16:16Speaker 1: road trip as they head to Boston for three in
- 16:19Speaker 1: Toronto for three now twenty eight and thirty two and
- 16:22Speaker 1: so there's only one hundred and two games to play
- 16:25Speaker 1: a lot of baseball to goal here for the Orioles
- 16:27Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six, but Tim, the human road numbers
- 16:32Speaker 1: have been pretty drastic, so the Oils are doing fine
- 16:34Speaker 1: at home. They need to get a gallon on the road.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I just thought it was important to visit this
- 16:41Speaker 4: considering the AL East opponents. Guys, the Orioles have played
- 16:45Speaker 4: on the road against AL East opponents twice, and you
- 16:49Speaker 4: can certainly make the argument maybe there isn't even an
- 16:51Speaker 4: argument that those were the two worst series of the
- 16:54Speaker 4: year in the Bronx, that four game series where they
- 16:57Speaker 4: got swept and then at the trot in that three
- 17:00Speaker 4: game series in which they got swept. You're heading to
- 17:03Speaker 4: Boston for three and then Toronto for three. But I
- 17:06Speaker 4: was looking at the splits and just the numbers and
- 17:08Speaker 4: things that really stood out to me. The offense is
- 17:13Speaker 4: top ten and pretty much every metric at home and
- 17:17Speaker 4: bottom ten in pretty much every metric on the road,
- 17:20Speaker 4: and they're averaging one fewer run per game. They're striking
- 17:24Speaker 4: out one and a half times more on the road
- 17:27Speaker 4: compared to at home. But the biggest disparity is with
- 17:32Speaker 4: the pitching staff, starters and relievers starting er or excuse me,
- 17:37Speaker 4: the team era at home seventeenth twenty first in team
- 17:41Speaker 4: whip at home thirtieth and team whip or team whip
- 17:45Speaker 4: on the road thirtieth and team era on the road
- 17:48Speaker 4: five eight six on the road compared to a three
- 17:51Speaker 4: seven six in at home, so you're talking two runs.
- 17:55Speaker 4: But you can break it down for starters and relievers.
- 17:58Speaker 4: The starters they're dead last in era and WHIP, the
- 18:01Speaker 4: relievers dead last and whip where they're more middle of
- 18:05Speaker 4: the pack at home. Starters twelfth in Home ERA, relievers
- 18:10Speaker 4: seventeenth and Home ERA. So the pitching is the biggest disparity,
- 18:16Speaker 4: but offensively, it's not the same offense away from Camden Yards.
- 18:21Speaker 2: To me, the weirdest part about all that is you
- 18:23Speaker 2: would think that.
- 18:24Speaker 3: It would be flopped with the pitching because we all
- 18:27Speaker 3: know Kami the Yards has definitely hit her friendly, so
- 18:30Speaker 3: it's just kind of crazy to hear those numbers and
- 18:32Speaker 3: see them on the screen.
- 18:34Speaker 2: It doesn't make any sense.
- 18:36Speaker 3: The hitters, I understand the run coming down a little
- 18:39Speaker 3: bit on the road because it's just cam Yards is
- 18:41Speaker 3: just so hitter friendly.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Guys get used to it. They love hitting there. When
- 18:44Speaker 2: you go on the road, it's just different.
- 18:45Speaker 3: But the pitching side, to me is just kind of
- 18:47Speaker 3: the weird thing that they're doing better at home.
- 18:49Speaker 2: Than on the road.
- 18:50Speaker 3: And I don't know what it is, but hopefully they
- 18:52Speaker 3: can get it going here. I always enjoyed pitching at
- 18:54Speaker 3: Fenway Park. To me, it was just I like to
- 18:57Speaker 3: pitch away to guys, so the righty's hit as far
- 18:59Speaker 3: as you want to right center field, lefties as long
- 19:01Speaker 3: as you don't hit it right down the line off
- 19:03Speaker 3: the Monster. I always felt pretty good against them, So
- 19:06Speaker 3: hopefull they can get to go with Boston. To me,
- 19:07Speaker 3: I always felt a little bit more picture friendly there.
- 19:10Speaker 3: So it's just about being aggressive in the zone and
- 19:13Speaker 3: not hurting themselves with the walks. Really when you go
- 19:15Speaker 3: to face these teams on the road, and hopefully they
- 19:17Speaker 3: can kind of get it going here in these next
- 19:20Speaker 3: two series on the road and start having success against
- 19:23Speaker 3: teams in the division on the road. I think there's
- 19:26Speaker 3: gonna be more coming up later in the season, and
- 19:27Speaker 3: just kind of get started in the right direction against
- 19:30Speaker 3: these teams.
- 19:32Speaker 1: Well, their next Al East Road wind will be there
- 19:35Speaker 1: first because they've only played two series and they got
- 19:37Speaker 1: swept in both by the Yankees and Raves. Oh and
- 19:40Speaker 1: seven Al East Road and it's the Al East. The
- 19:44Speaker 1: Orioles are eight and twelve overall, and there have been
- 19:47Speaker 1: three sweeps. That's been really strange. You don't see a
- 19:49Speaker 1: lot of al sweeps, but we have seen that, and
- 19:53Speaker 1: we just showed you the Oils are in a ninety
- 19:54Speaker 1: win pace in their home play and much less on
- 19:58Speaker 1: the road, so they got to clean that up. I
- 20:00Speaker 1: give them a great chance to do that because not
- 20:02Speaker 1: only are they playing better, but they're in two familiar ballparks.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Many of these players are very used to Fenway and
- 20:08Speaker 1: Rogers Center, two familiar opponents that they've seen already this year.
- 20:13Speaker 1: I think that helps. So the pitching is on such
- 20:15Speaker 1: a role here. I just see the Orioles having a
- 20:19Speaker 1: good road trip and keeping the momentum going.
- 20:22Speaker 3: What say you, guys, Yeah, I think I'm just saying before.
- 20:26Speaker 3: I think where the starting rotation is right now always
- 20:28Speaker 3: gives you a chance to play better and get more wins.
- 20:31Speaker 3: And I think they're just kind of in a role
- 20:33Speaker 3: right now. And I think for this team to turn
- 20:35Speaker 3: the season around, it's going to start and end with
- 20:37Speaker 3: the starting pitching. It always usually is with teams, but
- 20:40Speaker 3: I mean we really have seen it with this twenty
- 20:42Speaker 3: twenty six Orioles team. When the starting pitching is doing well,
- 20:45Speaker 3: the offense is engaged, the defense is better, and you
- 20:48Speaker 3: just see it overall better quality of baseball when the
- 20:51Speaker 3: starting pitching is doing better and they've really done a
- 20:54Speaker 3: great job the last ten to twelve games, and it
- 20:56Speaker 3: proves it because of the record, but it just seems
- 20:59Speaker 3: like a better over a quality of baseball. The defense
- 21:02Speaker 3: is more engaged, they're making better plays. We haven't seen
- 21:04Speaker 3: the misques when the starting pitching is kind of rolling.
- 21:07Speaker 3: That's kind of to me the biggest thing. The offense
- 21:09Speaker 3: is going to do their thing. We know they're going
- 21:10Speaker 3: to score runs. The power is a great sign seeing
- 21:14Speaker 3: that we're starting to see more home runs, don't have
- 21:15Speaker 3: to stream together as many hits. So for me, it's
- 21:18Speaker 3: just I just feel like with the starting pitching the
- 21:21Speaker 3: way it's going right now, they have a really good
- 21:23Speaker 3: chance here to kind of roll off some wins and
- 21:25Speaker 3: get themselves closer to five hundred and hopefully over five
- 21:28Speaker 3: hundred here in the next couple weeks.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Yeah, this is really going to be the big test
- 21:32Speaker 4: for these splits, right guys, Because you look at the
- 21:34Speaker 4: Red Stocks, and obviously you just play the Blue Jays.
- 21:37Speaker 4: These aren't exactly offenses firing on all cylinders. So this
- 21:41Speaker 4: starting rotation is in a great groove right now, two
- 21:45Speaker 4: three eight era over the last twelve games for the
- 21:48Speaker 4: starting staff, so you expect them to continue it. But
- 21:51Speaker 4: also it's the offense that has me excited as well,
- 21:55Speaker 4: where sixty runs in that ten game homestand they're just
- 21:59Speaker 4: really rolling, and you're starting to see the emergence of
- 22:02Speaker 4: Colden Cowser, which is just so huge for this offense,
- 22:05Speaker 4: and you're hoping for at least to split. I feel
- 22:09Speaker 4: like if you go three and three, you feel pretty
- 22:12Speaker 4: fine with that. On this road trip.
- 22:15Speaker 1: The run of pitching by the rotation has now left
- 22:18Speaker 1: the rotation with a better ERA than the bullpen. I
- 22:22Speaker 1: think this might be the first time this year we've
- 22:24Speaker 1: seen this out of the ools. But for a rare
- 22:26Speaker 1: game or two, the starters a rotation era is for sixty.
- 22:30Speaker 1: The penn era right now is for seventy one. The
- 22:33Speaker 1: starters had moved up to twenty third in baseball, which
- 22:36Speaker 1: doesn't sound impressive until you remember they were like twenty
- 22:39Speaker 1: ninth a week or two ago. So they are trending
- 22:42Speaker 1: up and that is good to see. Let's check in
- 22:45Speaker 1: on some runners in scoring position numbers and some other
- 22:48Speaker 1: stats coming up here on Birdland Territory.
- 22:52Speaker 7: Big Bed Morning Show, Finnie and Haney, Inside Access Live
- 22:57Speaker 7: on YouTube weekdays six till six, search Baltimore one O

- 23:04Speaker 7: your phone and never missed, Which you missed? One five
- 23:07Speaker 7: seven the Fan.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You know, I've watched baseball a lot of times years.
- 23:14Speaker 1: You guys have two I don't know why one team
- 23:18Speaker 1: or one guy hits well with runners in scoring position
- 23:21Speaker 1: and another doesn't. The best they can come up with,
- 23:24Speaker 1: it's it's it's like a truck going downhill. It's momentum.
- 23:27Speaker 1: One or two guys get that big hit, and all
- 23:29Speaker 1: of a sudden it's easier for the next guy. One
- 23:31Speaker 1: or two guys don't get that big hit, and all
- 23:34Speaker 1: of a sudden it's harder for the next guy. What
- 23:38Speaker 1: an example of it in the Toronto series? Over ten
- 23:41Speaker 1: first two games, they scored six runs seven for sixteen.
- 23:46Speaker 1: The last two games they scored fifteen runs. Is it
- 23:50Speaker 1: just that simple? I guess in this series it was.
- 23:55Speaker 3: Yeah, It's just I mean, that's kind of wins and losses.
- 23:58Speaker 3: In my opinion, it's straining runners when you're pitching and
- 24:01Speaker 3: kind of getting hits when guys are running score position.
- 24:03Speaker 2: It makes no sense.
- 24:04Speaker 3: There's no rhyme of reason why it happens the way
- 24:07Speaker 3: it does. Like you said, look at those last four
- 24:09Speaker 3: games is a perfect example. It's just it doesn't make
- 24:11Speaker 3: any sense. But I agree se If. I think when
- 24:13Speaker 3: you start getting guys in front of you doing it,
- 24:16Speaker 3: it makes it a lot easier for the guys behind you.
- 24:18Speaker 3: And I know it playing at home a lot of
- 24:20Speaker 3: times too. It's when you're struggling in a certain area.
- 24:22Speaker 3: I feel like the fans kind of know the errors
- 24:24Speaker 3: you're struggling in. So when they go oh for ten
- 24:27Speaker 3: the first two games, it's kind of like the fans
- 24:29Speaker 3: are like, you can feel the tension in the stands,
- 24:32Speaker 3: but when they get the hits, the fans are really excited.
- 24:36Speaker 3: So it's kind of playing at home can kind of
- 24:38Speaker 3: be Catch twenty two at times. I feel like when
- 24:40Speaker 3: certain things because the fans are well aware of what
- 24:42Speaker 3: the team is good at and they know what they're
- 24:44Speaker 3: kind of struggling with, so you kind of roll with
- 24:47Speaker 3: the momentum and the excitement in the stands while that's
- 24:50Speaker 3: going on.
- 24:50Speaker 2: But I wish there was a rhyme.
- 24:51Speaker 3: Of reason because it really determines seasons when you look
- 24:56Speaker 3: at it is how you do with runners.
- 24:57Speaker 2: In scoring position on the pitching and hitting. It's a weird,
- 25:01Speaker 2: weird thing.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Two of the most crucial stats in baseball without questions,
- 25:06Speaker 4: Scoring runs and preventing runs. That's the name of the game.
- 25:09Speaker 4: But it is amazing though, right, Steve, Like it's still
- 25:15Speaker 4: the same game, but there's guys on base. That's the
- 25:18Speaker 4: only difference. You're still throwing, you know, sixty feet six
- 25:21Speaker 4: inches guys in the back batter's box. But you're right,
- 25:25Speaker 4: some of these guys both sides. You know, some guys
- 25:28Speaker 4: really excel in the fact of stranding runners, you know,
- 25:31Speaker 4: Bullpeng guys, or some guys just had the clutch gene.
- 25:35Speaker 4: Like I always view Jordan Westburg as the perfect example.
- 25:39Speaker 4: He was just such a great run scorer, and you
- 25:42Speaker 4: always felt good about him coming up with the runners
- 25:44Speaker 4: in scoring position number.
- 25:46Speaker 2: But it was.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Amazing because you can even put that stat out even further, Steve,
- 25:51Speaker 4: I think they only had one hit with a runner
- 25:53Speaker 4: and scoring position heading into the ninth inning of Saturday's game,
- 25:57Speaker 4: and then it was just a barrage at that point,
- 26:00Speaker 4: which it's crazy. I don't know the rhyme or reason
- 26:04Speaker 4: for it, but I guess you could say the momentum,
- 26:06Speaker 4: the positive momentum.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I've had hitters say when the bases
- 26:11Speaker 1: are loaded, I try to remember the pitcher's the guy
- 26:13Speaker 1: in trouble, not me, the guy who loaded the bases,
- 26:17Speaker 1: and so I'm just gonna go do my thing. But
- 26:19Speaker 1: that sounds good, except when the bases were loaded and
- 26:22Speaker 1: two guys in front of you made outs and didn't
- 26:24Speaker 1: score a run, and now it's like, oh, we're gonna
- 26:26Speaker 1: blow this thing. And now you're up, and you chase
- 26:29Speaker 1: that pitch three inches outside. The anxiety and the mental
- 26:32Speaker 1: game of baseball has got to be pretty crazy there.
- 26:36Speaker 1: And so the Oil guys had a thirteen and sixteen
- 26:40Speaker 1: may I wonder what you make of that. It doesn't
- 26:43Speaker 1: sound great until you remember last year was like nine
- 26:46Speaker 1: and eighteen, Brandon Hoyt got fired, the whole season fell apart. Here,
- 26:50Speaker 1: it feels like they held onto the season, if that's
- 26:53Speaker 1: the phrase. For now we know they're only like a
- 26:55Speaker 1: game out in this ridiculous AL wild card race. And
- 26:58Speaker 1: so first the two different Mays, was it first a
- 27:03Speaker 1: second half?
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yeah, big time.
- 27:05Speaker 3: I think it's crazy when you look at it after
- 27:08Speaker 3: it's all said and done, it's all played, you look
- 27:10Speaker 3: back at the record, thirteen and sixteen is like I
- 27:13Speaker 3: would have taken that.
- 27:14Speaker 2: Or the first or second week of May.
- 27:16Speaker 3: It's like, it's just a weird Baseball is just such
- 27:19Speaker 3: a weird long run stretch of games that it's it's
- 27:22Speaker 3: hard to get too high and too low. And when
- 27:24Speaker 3: you look back and you look at your records, eats
- 27:26Speaker 3: a month. To me, it's their trending up. But if
- 27:29Speaker 3: you would have, you know, looked at thirteen and sixteen
- 27:31Speaker 3: at the beginning of the month, you would have been like,
- 27:33Speaker 3: I take that all day. It's just a it's a
- 27:35Speaker 3: weird numbers thing and it makes no sense half the time.
- 27:38Speaker 3: But to me, I just think that that's a great
- 27:41Speaker 3: record considering how the month started. They're playing way better baseball.
- 27:44Speaker 3: The offense looks better, starting, pitching looks great, the bullpen
- 27:47Speaker 3: will come back around. I think that's an EBB and
- 27:49Speaker 3: flow game with the guys they have there right now.
- 27:52Speaker 3: But I think this team's turning up, and I think
- 27:55Speaker 3: fans should be excited heading into the summer months.
- 27:57Speaker 2: And that's that's really all you can ask for.
- 27:59Speaker 3: At this point, still in it their game out of
- 28:01Speaker 3: the wild card regardless of records.
- 28:03Speaker 2: Throw that out of the way.
- 28:04Speaker 3: They have a chance to make the playoffs and they
- 28:05Speaker 3: just have to play better baseball from here on out.
- 28:08Speaker 4: It's sort of been the story of the season, right,
- 28:12Speaker 4: Like they've had such high highs this month and low
- 28:15Speaker 4: lows where I believe the month of May started with
- 28:18Speaker 4: that series in the Bronx, if I'm not mistaken, and
- 28:21Speaker 4: that was really low, and then you just look heading
- 28:24Speaker 4: into this homestand that lost that they had on Wednesday
- 28:28Speaker 4: where they had the two run league going into the
- 28:30Speaker 4: eighth against the Raids. You get swept there and that
- 28:33Speaker 4: felt like rock bottom of the season. I think there
- 28:35Speaker 4: were eight games below five hundred at that point, and
- 28:38Speaker 4: it was funny. I remember Pete during his pregame scrum
- 28:44Speaker 4: prior to the home stand starting, he was like, look,
- 28:46Speaker 4: this is a great opportunity for us. And I know
- 28:48Speaker 4: some fans probably rolled their eyes at that, but what
- 28:50Speaker 4: did they take advantage of that great opportunity? Like if
- 28:54Speaker 4: you would have told any of us, hey, they're going
- 28:56Speaker 4: to go seven to three in this homestand everyone would
- 28:59Speaker 4: have signed up for that, so they're certainly playing their
- 29:03Speaker 4: best ball as they enter the month of June.
- 29:08Speaker 1: I just can't get over how remarkable a ten games
- 29:10Speaker 1: it was. You can go through a ten game stretch
- 29:13Speaker 1: and not see three walk offs on one homestand and
- 29:16Speaker 1: a blown five nothing lead and a sweep of Tampa
- 29:21Speaker 1: Bay which they had been swept the week earlier. I mean,
- 29:25Speaker 1: that's just remarkable, all the crazy things that happened on
- 29:29Speaker 1: this homestand, and it's just it's been something.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's old.
- 29:34Speaker 3: I almost forgot that they played the Tigers on this
- 29:36Speaker 3: home standing walk off. Like it's amazing how long ten
- 29:41Speaker 3: games can feel when they're the games are that exciting,
- 29:44Speaker 3: and it's ten games is like a blip on the
- 29:47Speaker 3: season radar, But it's it's just.
- 29:48Speaker 2: Funny how certain certain ten games.
- 29:51Speaker 3: Can look so much different and feel so much different
- 29:53Speaker 3: than You're just not gonna get many more exciting games
- 29:56Speaker 3: than a ten game stretch than they had in that Homestand.
- 29:59Speaker 4: I would put that Memorial Day game against the Rays
- 30:03Speaker 4: for game of the year across the league like that,
- 30:06Speaker 4: that's gotta be in consideration where thirteen innings and the
- 30:10Speaker 4: O's were trailing in the eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and came
- 30:13Speaker 4: back every single time and ended up walking it off
- 30:16Speaker 4: with Colton Cowser for a second straight day. Like that
- 30:19Speaker 4: game in particular, that's a Game of the Year candidate
- 30:22Speaker 4: for me.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Be trazy roster stuff, guys, because you had ends and
- 30:28Speaker 1: asked Albert Suarez designated for assignment, and the fans were
- 30:32Speaker 1: shared up that they're going to lose those guys. Albert's
- 30:35Speaker 1: already back in his pitch for the team and just
- 30:37Speaker 1: back at TRIPLEA. We know he'll be back in Baltimore.
- 30:40Speaker 1: I mean, I know that's ten days that you had
- 30:43Speaker 1: to pay attention because it is crazy.
- 30:45Speaker 2: It was a season long journey in ten games. Really
- 30:50Speaker 2: it was.
- 30:50Speaker 3: It was ups and downs, it was. And it's funny
- 30:52Speaker 3: too when you talk about the memorial game. To me,
- 30:54Speaker 3: that was one of those those games I loved playing
- 30:57Speaker 3: as a player, A long one battle back and forth.
- 31:00Speaker 3: When you come out of those games, so much momentum
- 31:03Speaker 3: comes out of wins like that. It's such a team building,
- 31:06Speaker 3: team bonding type of experience. It's hard to explain unless
- 31:09Speaker 3: you're in the clubhouse. Those long ones that go like
- 31:12Speaker 3: that and you're able to come back and win and
- 31:14Speaker 3: vice versa. On the other side, Tampa, when you lose
- 31:17Speaker 3: that one, it's a gut wrenching loss. So I think
- 31:20Speaker 3: that really kind of springboarded them there the last seven
- 31:23Speaker 3: games of the homestand it just kind of it's just
- 31:25Speaker 3: one of those things that it's a weird thing to
- 31:27Speaker 3: be a part of, and it's an awesome experience in
- 31:29Speaker 3: the clubhouse and being part of wins like that.
- 31:33Speaker 1: And if they lost those first two games to Toronto,
- 31:35Speaker 1: what did all Birdland feel? All the blue Jay's got
- 31:38Speaker 1: to go And now they're going to roll right through
- 31:40Speaker 1: the Orioles. This home stand, which looks so good it's
- 31:43Speaker 1: going to end as a dot until it didn't, and
- 31:46Speaker 1: the Orioles turned it and made it much better for themselves. So, man,
- 31:52Speaker 1: this is a wild edition of Birdland Territory, a roller
- 31:54Speaker 1: coaster for us with all those ups and downs too.
- 31:57Speaker 1: But we'll be here to keep talking about and let everybody.
- 32:00Speaker 1: I know that pretty soon Zach Britton will appear on
- 32:03Speaker 1: this show. I think Brad knows him pretty well, and
- 32:06Speaker 1: those fans remember Zach Britton. Finally that incredible year he
- 32:10Speaker 1: had at Great Oriel. He was He's got some new
- 32:13Speaker 1: ventures and he's got a lot to say, so we'll
- 32:15Speaker 1: check in with him very soon on this show, so
- 32:18Speaker 1: keep watching Birdland Territory. Thanks for checking in today, and
- 32:21Speaker 1: we'll see you next time.
