- 0:05Driverless London Welcome to Mark and Pete.
- 0:08You know London traffic is already an exercise in patience
- 0:14and humility. What's going to come now The
- 0:18cars are driverless. Welcome to Mark and Pete. 2
- 0:22blokes with half an opinion. Now here's our first thought.
- 0:27Nervous Nomad robotaxis are simply driverless cars, but
- 0:34where they're going is anyone's guess, so they may be just
- 0:38passengerless cars if travellers suffer from nervous stress.
- 0:43Now I wonder when you are out and about in London, in a town,
- 0:47yes, you want to get somewhere? Well, maybe flagging down a taxi
- 0:51is a good thing. The problem is that the world is
- 0:54changing. Technology is taking over.
- 0:57Yes. the US driverless firm called Waymo said it hopes to be
- 1:02operating a robo taxi service in London by the end of 2026.
- 1:07Now the UK Government said it's plans to change regulations in
- 1:11the second-half of this year is to enable driverless taxis to
- 1:15operate in the city, but it is not given a specific date.
- 1:19I wonder whether there is something more specific about
- 1:22this. Do you feel, Mr. Pete, that this
- 1:25is a good thing for London travellers?
- 1:28Or are you slightly nervous that you will not have that old
- 1:33cheeky, cheery London cabbie to take you where you need to go?
- 1:38Yes, well, I'm as soon as I heard that this was in the
- 1:42offing, of course I bought a a new crash helmet and a complete
- 1:48protective armour to make my way through London.
- 1:51No, I, I think that driverless cars are my thinking is they're
- 1:57almost universally a bad thing. In this one case.
- 2:00I'm a real Luddite. I love taking on new technology,
- 2:04but I it's, it's, it's about responsibility.
- 2:07You see humans, of course, responsible for developing this
- 2:12technology, but to what extent are they then responsible if
- 2:16they run someone over, you know, it's a, it's if, if there's a
- 2:20driverless car, they don't have the same sort of same sort of
- 2:24moral compunction. They can, they can make
- 2:27mistakes. And people who claim otherwise,
- 2:30well, I don't think that that's, that's, that can be right.
- 2:34I mean, because everything is errors into it.
- 2:37It's made by humans, even though it they're not being driven by
- 2:41humans. So my feeling is that it's a
- 2:44recipe for disaster as if if they get, you know, not just a
- 2:51few around, but if there's a large number of them, I think
- 2:55it's going to be bad. And what, what would happen, you
- 2:57know, if a driverless taxi is flipping off another driverless
- 3:03taxi, what's going to happen there?
- 3:04No, no, but that's just a, a flippant remark.
- 3:06But I, I, I do think it's a bad thing because there are some,
- 3:10there will be some errors then if there are many, many of them,
- 3:14even if it's a small proportion, that's going to be disastrous
- 3:19because, and it's going to be very difficult to know who to
- 3:23blame. Well, it is, but now
- 3:25interestingly, there have been pilot projects in other parts of
- 3:30the world. So if you take San Francisco,
- 3:32for example, you would have seen that there are driverless
- 3:35vehicles actively operating in a consistent way there.
- 3:40Now they have a slightly different infrastructure to
- 3:44London. And of course, you know, that's
- 3:46not to say that it's easy, but it's slightly easier.
- 3:49You're right. There have been examples where
- 3:52taxis have gone to the wrong venue, they've either not let
- 3:55the passenger out or that they found their way into some very
- 3:59peculiar and dangerous places. But I think that what the UK
- 4:03government is thinking is a slightly different picture and
- 4:06that is that autonomous vehicles is an industry that potentially
- 4:10is the worth of around 40 odd billion pounds to the UK economy
- 4:15by 2035. Now what they're also saying is
- 4:19from a commercial perspective, this could generate up to 40,000
- 4:22new jobs. Now that's a good thing.
- 4:25But here you go. It's about and we've already
- 4:27highlighted somebody, Mr. Pete, typical passenger, a sort of a
- 4:32person maybe who might be a bit of a technophobe who might be
- 4:35sort of thinking I'm not going to get in one of those vehicles.
- 4:37There is something, in my opinion that somebody's probably
- 4:41overlooked and that is potholes. Now, I don't know whether you're
- 4:46aware of this, is that in London the infrastructure is crumbling,
- 4:50in fact. It's, well, I'm aware of it,
- 4:52very much so. Well, the fact of the matter is,
- 4:53is that if the government's going to invest in this or even
- 4:57Waymo, when they actually start putting their vehicles around,
- 5:00how is the vehicle going to cope with the devious nature of our
- 5:05rather crumbling infrastructure? And I think that that's
- 5:08something that has to be addressed, which is going to go
- 5:10way beyond 42 billion. Oh yes.
- 5:14Mr. Pete, let me ask you this is that it might seem like a
- 5:18theoretical a good idea, even if the the actual robotaxis can
- 5:23actually, you know, do what they say.
- 5:25But how? How are they going to navigate
- 5:27some rather rather crumbling Rd. systems?
- 5:31Yes, crumbling Rd. systems and things that you can't predict.
- 5:36So many things have happened. Trees falling, people running
- 5:41out into the road from 2 directions, Protests happens in
- 5:45many London streets. You know what?
- 5:46I, I just don't, I, I think that it's, it's difficult, although
- 5:51impressive technology, it's difficult to, to be implemented
- 5:56in this way. Yes, I think that we can go back
- 6:00and look at, this isn't, in some ways isn't similar at all, but
- 6:04it has aspects that for which we can learn from.
- 6:07And that's it. That was the introduction of
- 6:09trams into cities across Britain, certainly across the
- 6:13world. And they seem such a good idea
- 6:15because they can, they run along preset lines and just perfect.
- 6:22And, and what a brilliant idea because it's not going to cause
- 6:24any trouble. You can see where they are.
- 6:26And then you found that bikes got stuck in the, in the tracks
- 6:30and people got run over. And there are various other
- 6:33problems to do with people, the fact that you can't steer the
- 6:38tram as the person wasn't in control, the track was.
- 6:42And you see how that is there's a similar nature in the the
- 6:48consequences were not predicted before were being used across
- 6:53the world really there were trams in my local city of
- 6:57Birmingham still there were still there when I was young.
- 7:01They're not there anymore. And that the trams were removed
- 7:04and replaced with buses with a driver.
- 7:08And it may well be that that's what happens to this new
- 7:11technology. But I have to say that my
- 7:14experience, Mark is maybe the same view of driving around this
- 7:18lovely country of England is that other drivers are really be
- 7:22stupid. I mean, obviously not me, but
- 7:23the other drivers are all stupid and make stupid mistakes.
- 7:26So in a way, I'm I'm the ideal person to support this.
- 7:31I just see the the the issues of introducing this technology on a
- 7:38large scale thought with problems.
- 7:42It's it's there's a Bible verse is interesting.
- 7:44This is Proverbs 19, verse 2. It is not good to have zeal
- 7:49without knowledge, nor to be hasty and miss the way the way
- 7:54here, I mean the way forwards. I think there's too much
- 7:56enthusiasm for this new technology and it may well come
- 8:00back to bite us. Well according to Waymo
- 8:04themselves it uses just to give you a little bit of reassurance,
- 8:07it uses 4 sensor system to gather data from the world
- 8:10around it, Lidar, vision, radar and microphone.
- 8:13Now according to the capability it can for every vehicle look
- 8:18around 363 hundred 360° as far as 3 football fields ahead and
- 8:24indeed during bad weather. But to your point, I was
- 8:28wondering really culturally though you are missing out
- 8:31because normally you know, a taxi driver would be saying,
- 8:34hey, guess what, who he used to have the celebrity in the back
- 8:36of my vehicle. Well now if you're the passenger
- 8:39is guess who I didn't have in the driving seat?
- 8:43I mean, you know, and the other one is what happens if it runs
- 8:46off with your drives off with your baggage.
- 8:49I mean. So your baggage goes on a
- 8:52different journey. I think really I, I'm all for
- 8:55this. I'm very much for the, for sort
- 8:57of seeing how the pilot works. But you know, whilst I do agree
- 9:01with you that there may be some concerns, it's quite possible
- 9:06that Waymo this could all end up being driven down a dead end.
