- 0:00Hey you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:04on In the Stillness. Thanks for joining me on this
- 0:07Tuesday. I hope you all had a wonderful
- 0:09start to your week yesterday and I am just super excited for the
- 0:14content of today's episode. I think that there are so many
- 0:18great takeaways. The Lord was definitely teaching
- 0:22me things in this quiet time, so I'm very hopeful that y'all can
- 0:26learn some things as well. I believe that there are so many
- 0:30Christians walking around who know about God, but they don't
- 0:35actually live with confidence in Him.
- 0:39It is so easy to hear verses in the Bible, to know church
- 0:44language, what we're supposed to say, how we're supposed to act.
- 0:49But deep down, I think a lot of people still approach the Lord
- 0:55distant, hesitant, unsure, and wondering if he really does hear
- 1:02you, if he really does want us close, and if we're somehow
- 1:08still on the outside trying to earn access.
- 1:12But first, John 5, as we will read shortly, completely just
- 1:17breaks this mindset down. John says he wrote these things
- 1:22so that believers would know. So not a maybe not if I perform
- 1:28enough, but no. And so I just think a lot of
- 1:33Christians are living far below the access Jesus already paid
- 1:37for. And I want to debunk that.
- 1:40I want to go through it and address it.
- 1:42So let's go ahead and read first John chapter 5, verses 13 to 15.
- 1:50I've written this letter to you who believe in the name of the
- 1:54Son of God, so that you will be assured and know without a doubt
- 1:59that you have eternal life. Since we have this confidence,
- 2:04we can also have great boldness before Him, For if we ask
- 2:08anything agreeable to His will, He will hear us.
- 2:13And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we also know
- 2:19that we have obtained the requests we ask of Him.
- 2:25OK, so clearly John is writing to Christians.
- 2:29He is reminding them what they already have access to in Christ
- 2:33right now. And in yesterday's podcast, we
- 2:37talked a lot about this, that eternal life is not just someday
- 2:42or one day in heaven. It begins when you proclaim
- 2:46Christ as Lord of your life, when you profess your faith
- 2:50right now. And one thing that I kept
- 2:54thinking about during my quiet time today is how possible it is
- 2:59to be a Christian in name only, but to not fully take on that
- 3:04identity. To know things mentally but not
- 3:08truly grasp them in your heart. There is a difference between
- 3:14hearing the truth but then actually receiving revelation
- 3:19from God. For example, you can know that
- 3:23parenting is hard through the way that people talk about it.
- 3:27You can hear that childbirth is painful.
- 3:30But until you experience something personally, you're not
- 3:34going to fully understand the weight of it or appreciate what
- 3:38they are saying. And I think a lot of believers
- 3:41can do the same thing spiritually.
- 3:44We can say, yeah, God loves me, Jesus died for me, I'm saved by
- 3:51grace, but not understand the significance behind those words.
- 3:56And they can still live anxious, distant, spiritually unsure or
- 4:01wavering. In Ecclesiastes 8, I was
- 4:04actually going through this passage with a friend early this
- 4:08morning at a coffee shop, and it talks about applying our minds
- 4:13to wisdom. And we were just talking about
- 4:16how wisdom is something that we ask God for.
- 4:22It says in James to ask God for more wisdom because he will
- 4:26generously, freely give it to us.
- 4:29But we have to be intentional too.
- 4:31Wisdom is knowledge applied in the practical, and so we can't
- 4:37just passively receive it and then expect it to bear fruit in
- 4:42our lives. And what really stood out to me
- 4:45is our certainty is based on God's promise.
- 4:50It is not based on our feelings. Faith is not anchored in
- 4:55emotion. Faith is anchored in fact.
- 4:58Let me repeat that. Faith is anchored in fact.
- 5:04Hebrews 11 verse one says that faith is assurance about what we
- 5:09hope for and confidence about what we do not see.
- 5:14And the father of our faith, Abraham, way back in the
- 5:18beginning of the Bible, he believed God, therefore
- 5:22righteousness was entrusted to him.
- 5:26He received by belief, by faith, and so as his descendants, we do
- 5:33too. So many believers think that
- 5:36confidence with God comes from feeling close to him.
- 5:41But y'all, the blood of Jesus brought you close, whether you
- 5:45emotionally feel it today or not.
- 5:50Suddenly your relationship with God is no longer built on
- 5:54emotional instability. It's built on covenant.
- 5:59It's built on what Jesus already accomplished, and because of
- 6:05that, we've actually been given the ability to approach God with
- 6:10confidence. Guys, it is the same kind of
- 6:13confidence that Jesus modeled. I'm going to talk more about
- 6:18that confidence that Jesus modeled in the Garden of
- 6:21Gethsemane in a second. But I also just want to say I
- 6:24think a lot of people are constantly stressed trying to
- 6:27figure out what God's will is like.
- 6:30It is some impossible mystery, but Jesus says in John 10 verse
- 6:3527, my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.
- 6:42Sheep know the shepherd's voice and God never intended for His
- 6:48children to live disconnected from him in a guessing game of
- 6:53what He's thinking or what His will is.
- 6:57And something that I was thinking about was intimacy
- 7:01influences. Think about the closer that you
- 7:06get to know someone, the closer that you grow, the more that you
- 7:11begin reflecting them or you're influenced by their behavior.
- 7:15You start caring about what they care about.
- 7:18You start understanding their heart.
- 7:20You begin recognizing what matters to them without needing
- 7:24every single explanation spelled out.
- 7:28And that's exactly what can happen with God.
- 7:32The more time that you spend with Him, whether that be
- 7:35through prayer, through reading scripture, learning and
- 7:39practicing obedience and communing with the Father, the
- 7:44more that your desires align with His desires.
- 7:49And eventually you realize that God does not withhold good from
- 7:53you. Psalm 8411 says no good thing
- 7:57does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.
- 8:02He is protecting you from settling for less than His best.
- 8:07God sees the full picture. He sees what we cannot see.
- 8:13He understands perfect timing. He knows the people that you
- 8:17need in your life. He is looking to the eternal
- 8:21impact. He is far more focused on your
- 8:25internal heart then the physical and the immediate relief that
- 8:31you want right now. I think one of the clearest
- 8:35pictures of this tension between human desire and trust in God's
- 8:40will is seen through Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
- 8:44As I was touching on earlier, Matthew 26 verse 39 says My
- 8:49Father, this is Jesus praying. If it be possible, let this cup
- 8:54pass for me yet. Not as I will, but as you will.
- 9:01Jesus was not pretending that the cross would be easy.
- 9:04He brought his anguish, his emotions, very honestly before
- 9:09the Father. But here's the thing, His
- 9:13honesty did not overrule his trust.
- 9:17So I think that is an invitation of prayer for us too.
- 9:22Faith is not pretending that we don't have desires.
- 9:26It's not diminishing fear or pain.
- 9:29It's bringing them transparently before God and still trusting
- 9:34His wisdom above our own, trusting the Lord with all of
- 9:39our heart and not leaning on our own understanding, but
- 9:43submitting to His understanding. Jesus did not hide his desire
- 9:48for another way. He surrendered it.
- 9:51And I think what changes everything is realizing that the
- 9:56no that Jesus received in the moment in Gethsemane, it became
- 10:01humanity's eternal yes to salvation.
- 10:06It became the way that we can be reconciled with God.
- 10:10And I believe that's why John says we pray according to God's
- 10:15will and he hears us. Do we realize how powerful that
- 10:21is truly, that the Creator of heaven and the creator of earth
- 10:27hears you, not just barely listens to you, but hears you.
- 10:33And if he hears us, John says we can have confidence.
- 10:38So I just want this to be our challenge to not just pray
- 10:43small, to stop praying tiny prayers out of fear, but to pray
- 10:51big, pray specifically, pray boldly.
- 10:56God invites His children to ask. This is not because we are
- 11:03entitled, but this is because you are His child.
- 11:07He cares. Ephesians 3 verse 12 says in him
- 11:12and through faith in him that is Jesus, we may approach God with
- 11:17freedom and confidence. That confidence was purchased by
- 11:23Jesus. We were bought with a price.
- 11:28Jesus did not endure the cross rejection, separation from his
- 11:34Father at the time for sin so that his children would spend
- 11:38their lives just approaching God timidly and afraid.
- 11:43Jesus made a way for you to come boldly, rooted in humility.
- 11:48Yes, we are not to be prideful or arrogant, but to come before
- 11:53Him with a deep confidence as a fully loved child of God.
- 11:59So I just want to ask you all these three questions before I
- 12:02close out. Am I building my faith more on
- 12:06feelings or on God's promises? What areas of my life am I still
- 12:12trying to control instead of trusting God's will?
- 12:18And if I truly believed that God hears me every request I bring
- 12:23before him, how would it change the way that I pray?
- 12:28So let's go ahead and pray and come before the Lord with
- 12:32freedom, boldness, and confidence.
- 12:35Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for access to you.
- 12:41Thank you Jesus, for making a way and giving us this access to
- 12:47the Father. I pray that our confidence would
- 12:52not be based on a striving for perfection, that we would know
- 12:58that it is not our emotions or our feelings that bring us close
- 13:03to you, God. It is on your finished work.
- 13:07Jesus, would you teach us to know You deeply, not just
- 13:13intellectually but intimately in relationship?
- 13:19I pray that we would recognize your voice.
- 13:22I pray that we would trust your timing.
- 13:25May we surrender to your will above our own.
- 13:29And would you align our hearts with Your will?
- 13:34I pray that we would have an increased boldness and prayer
- 13:38knowing that you hear us, that you care and you delight to give
- 13:43us your best Father. I pray this in Jesus name, Amen.
- 13:49OK guys, that's today's podcast. That was a lot, and I feel like
- 13:54I could talk about this for a lot longer than I did, but I am
- 13:59praying that the Lord will just continue revealing things to
- 14:03you, encouraging you, uplifting your spirit, and that you would
- 14:08learn to approach the Lord with humility, yes, but with such
- 14:14confidence that He does truly, truly care and know exactly what
- 14:20you need. I will see y'all on the next
- 14:22podcast episode.
