- 4:11Speaker 1: and near the continental. Slope seeing one move within a
- 4:15Speaker 1: few miles of shore is certainly less common and highlights
- 4:20Speaker 1: our needs to better understand the drivers of this apex
- 4:24Speaker 1: predator's movements in The. Gulf in case you're, Wondering ernst
- 4:31Speaker 1: was named in honor Of william G, ernst a ferry
- 4:35Speaker 1: between The Nova Scotian. Islands classified as a, subadult meaning
- 4:43Speaker 1: somewhere between ten and thirty years, old so she's not
- 4:48Speaker 1: quite fully. Grown female great whites reach sexual maturity at
- 4:54Speaker 1: around fifteen. Feet my, gosh the diet shift from fish
- 5:02Speaker 1: to larger marine. Animals so, look we know they're out.
- 5:12Speaker 1: There let's let's be very careful out. There there's a
- 5:20Speaker 1: lot of ernst swimming. Around Toyota Sheri lunker program. Underway last,
- 5:35Speaker 1: year four hundred and sixty nine anglers entered a record
- 5:41Speaker 1: one thousand and seventy one large mouth. Bass the total
- 5:48Speaker 1: included seven hundred and fourteen between eight and ten, pounds
- 5:57Speaker 1: three hundred and thirty five between ten and thirteen, pounds
- 6:01Speaker 1: fourteen legacy fish over thirteen, pounds and eight that were
- 6:09Speaker 1: thirteen or. More first one fourteen point seven to eight
- 6:21Speaker 1: caught By Ross gomez At Allan Henry, lake so it's the.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Same first time in program. History the same angler caught
- 6:35Speaker 1: the same fish. Twice that's pretty. AMAZING i mean when
- 6:43Speaker 1: you look at. It gomez had worked till three o'clock that,
- 6:47Speaker 1: afternoon wanted to get some fishing in after. Work got
- 6:52Speaker 1: to the. Dock there was a friend of mine on
- 6:53Speaker 1: fish with. BEFORE i was trying out a new LURE
- 6:57Speaker 1: i had. Bought we were just talking about. Fishing threw
- 7:00Speaker 1: the lure out there is bringing it in and, stopped
- 7:02Speaker 1: looked at. It out of, NOWHERE i saw her come
- 7:05Speaker 1: up from the bottom and smash. It i'm screaming to my,
- 7:08Speaker 1: friend get the. Net it's a huge fish it. WAS i, mean,
- 7:18Speaker 1: yeah almost fifteen. POUNDS ohiv racked up Twelve legacy class.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Luckers that's over thirteen in twenty, one twenty, two twenty,
- 7:28Speaker 1: four fifteen in twenty twenty. Three so off to a
- 7:38Speaker 1: start already this. Year and if you want to catch
- 7:47Speaker 1: a big bass in public, Waters Alan henry probably is
- 7:55Speaker 1: the place that gives you the best chance to do
- 7:59Speaker 1: that at This this has been going on a long
- 8:05Speaker 1: time and it. Is it's an amazing program and what
- 8:09Speaker 1: they've done through parks and wildlife and learning how to
- 8:20Speaker 1: grow big, bass which we've talked about you know quite
- 8:25Speaker 1: a bit. Before by the, Way parks And wildlife has
- 8:33Speaker 1: Closed Matagorda bay to commercial and recreational oyster fishing because
- 8:42Speaker 1: recent samples collected showing a low abundance of legal sized.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Oysters this, happens they will continue to monitor. It they'll
- 8:53Speaker 1: reopen if the thresholds are, met so we will keep
- 9:00Speaker 1: an eye on. That thousands of. IGUANAS i know you've
- 9:07Speaker 1: seen this. Story you know it's been cold In florida
- 9:10Speaker 1: last couple of. Weeks crazy. Cold i'm talking about below freezing,
- 9:17Speaker 1: cold the lowest Recorded february temperature since nineteen twenty three
- 9:24Speaker 1: In orlando and everything south of, there Especially. Miami according
- 9:30Speaker 1: TO Wplg, television it's raining. Iguanas the latest bout of extreme.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Cold we're well aware. Of Florida Fisher wildlife issued an
- 9:48Speaker 1: executive order allowing people to transport iguanas Cal Roger, young
- 10:01Speaker 1: the executive, director, says the first time we've ever done.
- 10:04Speaker 1: This we figured we'd take advantage of the cold weather
- 10:07Speaker 1: to try to help out the. Landscape the bottom line
- 10:12Speaker 1: is you can turn iguanas. In there have been over
- 10:16Speaker 1: two thousand iguanas collected because when their body temperature gets
- 10:22Speaker 1: a certain, range they basically they don't freeze to. DEATH
- 10:29Speaker 1: i mean a few of them, do but they go
- 10:32Speaker 1: dormant and they start falling out of trees and landing on.
- 10:36Speaker 1: PEOPLE i, mean it's funny to me because it didn't
- 10:42Speaker 1: happen to. Me But i'm just saying they're using this
- 10:50Speaker 1: to try because they've done everything they can to try
- 10:53Speaker 1: to regulate the iguana population and it has it. Worked
- 11:04Speaker 1: they're everywhere In South. Florida they're a, menace they are a.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Threat AND i tell you this is going to put
- 11:16Speaker 1: a little bit of, dent which is a good, thing
- 11:22Speaker 1: in the iguana population In South. Florida and we've talked
- 11:26Speaker 1: about that before. Too you, know they have. Hunts there's
- 11:31Speaker 1: commercial people that, say, hey come kill some iguanas down.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Here we need your. Help Now i've talked about. BEFORE
- 11:41Speaker 1: a friend of mine had been down there a few
- 11:42Speaker 1: years ago fishing on one of the inland you, know,
- 11:48Speaker 1: canals waterways and in the parking. LOT i don't, know
- 11:52Speaker 1: there must have been. Thirty it was a little bit of.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Intimidating it was like the, birds only with iguanas kind
- 11:59Speaker 1: of staring at you and slowly coming toward. You, YEAH
- 12:03Speaker 1: i didn't like.
- 12:03Speaker 6: That so.
- 12:07Speaker 1: The cold, weather while difficult for specially agriculture in that
- 12:14Speaker 1: state and fishing to a lesser, extent did have all,
- 12:24Speaker 1: right did have a positive effect in terms of kind
- 12:28Speaker 1: of thinning out that that. Population so In, florida we're talking.
- 12:37Speaker 1: Iguanas In North, Texas, frisco to be, exact north Of,
- 12:41Speaker 1: dallas we're talking about bobcats and. Coyotes Frisco police said
- 12:48Speaker 1: in a statement last week Its Animal services division has
- 12:52Speaker 1: been investigating several bobcat attacks on house. Pets police say
- 12:58Speaker 1: there's no indication to public is at. RISK Dj, schubert
- 13:05Speaker 1: Senior wildlatte, biologists that we are occupying their. SPACE i
- 13:10Speaker 1: think what that comes a level of responsibility to do
- 13:12Speaker 1: our best to, coexist not so. Much you, know they
- 13:24Speaker 1: talk about how important the animals are to the, environment
- 13:28Speaker 1: which they. Are i'm not saying they're. Not but if
- 13:35Speaker 1: you know, me you know this idea of we're occupying
- 13:39Speaker 1: occupying their, space that doesn't fly with. Me they're in our.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Space North texans may worry about animals, attacks but the
- 13:51Speaker 1: good news is there was not one reported fatality from
- 13:56Speaker 1: a bobcat attack last. Year In North. Texas Good. Gosh Karen,
- 14:04Speaker 1: sosato Coordinator Project, coyote a group that advocates for the
- 14:09Speaker 1: preservation of wild, carnivores said one thing people don't realize
- 14:13Speaker 1: is behaviors that might feel threatening to them or the
- 14:15Speaker 1: animal's natural. Behavior, coexistence she, says is not about doing.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Nothing it's about understanding wildlife behavior and taking, simple proactive
- 14:26Speaker 1: steps that keep, people companion, animals and walld neighbors. Safe
- 14:31Speaker 1: my proactive staff would probably involve a. Firearm cooties and
- 14:39Speaker 1: bobcats are not inherently dangerous to. Humans we've heard this before,
- 14:44Speaker 1: Though like all, animals they deserve and respect. Space schubert
- 14:53Speaker 1: says it's important to understand bobcats and cayotos are wild.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Animals humans should not attempt to treat them as. Domesticated
- 15:00Speaker 1: now that's good. Advice in other, words don't be feeding
- 15:04Speaker 1: a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and trying to take your.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Picture AND i always love these tips on, wildlife especially
- 15:16Speaker 1: to city. Folk pause and let animals move out of your.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Path if the animal lingers make, noise, clapping, yelling restrain
- 15:30Speaker 1: your pets since wildlife could potentially transmit. Diseases make sure
- 15:35Speaker 1: vaccinations are. Updated in other, words, hey you got to get.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Bit make sure you've had your. Shots secure pet food
- 15:45Speaker 1: and trash in close. Containers never run from. Wildlife this
- 15:50Speaker 1: can discourage. Chasing never corner. Them how do you corner a?
- 15:55Speaker 1: Bobcat that sounds like a children's book to. Me just
- 16:01Speaker 1: send an. Idea people leave that. Alone that's my, idea
- 16:10Speaker 1: how to corner a? Bobcat all, right we got Some
- 16:17Speaker 1: let me do this first and then we'll get to
- 16:21Speaker 1: some more. Attacks this is Local New Year's day tattoo
- 16:33Speaker 1: shop owner. SAID i thought we'd been broken into, stuff
- 16:38Speaker 1: knocked over, glass, broken chaos, everywhere but nothing was, stolen
- 16:44Speaker 1: AND i noticed some bloody pawprints on the floor and
- 16:47Speaker 1: on the. Walls turns out a raccoon had fallen through the,
- 16:51Speaker 1: roof knocked over, bookcases cut its, foot climb back into the.

- 17:10Speaker 1: Rehabit Relocation center helped humanely trap and relocate the. Raccoons,
- 17:18Speaker 1: AGAIN i would have done it for much. LESS i
- 17:20Speaker 1: could have relocated them and without telling you how or
- 17:25Speaker 1: where they were. RELOCATED i love. This if anyone finds
- 17:30Speaker 1: themselves in a similar, situation supporting organizations Like paws And
- 17:35Speaker 1: claws makes a. Difference i'll tell you what those trash

- 34:57Speaker 1: thursday The Biggest i'm gonna let you in on a
- 35:05Speaker 1: podcast that the folks At parks And wildlife have started
- 35:08Speaker 1: Called Better. Outside Morgan O handlin is a senior staff
- 35:14Speaker 1: writer for The parks And wildlife, magazine and we're going
- 35:21Speaker 1: to talk about a trip and it's a couple of,
- 35:26Speaker 1: parts so we may do the the back half a
- 35:30Speaker 1: little bit later at another. Time but they tackle all
- 35:36Speaker 1: kinds of great subjects in the state Of, texas whether
- 35:42Speaker 1: in all parts of the. State and one of the
- 35:47Speaker 1: things they've done is talk about The Devil's. River and
- 35:50Speaker 1: if you know anything about The Devil's, river it's probably
- 35:54Speaker 1: the wildest part that with access in the end entire
- 36:00Speaker 1: state Of, texas the access is. Limited it has been
- 36:04Speaker 1: expanded over the last few. Years it is the most
- 36:09Speaker 1: pristine river and probably wildlife area in the entire. State
- 36:14Speaker 1: AND i know that's saying something not a lot of
- 36:19Speaker 1: people do. It it takes some. Effort obviously you can
- 36:26Speaker 1: go for a, day but if you go that far
- 36:28Speaker 1: and go that, long you want to do a little
- 36:30Speaker 1: bit more than. That and AS i, Mentioned morgan set
- 36:38Speaker 1: out to get some information because she wanted to take
- 36:42Speaker 1: her mom and we want to hear part of that
- 36:47Speaker 1: and give you some information on access to The Devil's.
- 36:54Speaker 12: River And i'm about to put my mom through a similar.
- 36:57Speaker 12: Experience so SINCE i took a great friends out to
- 37:00Speaker 12: The Devil's river back in twenty twenty, one she's been
- 37:03Speaker 12: asking me to take her there. Too she saw the
- 37:05Speaker 12: pictures of that really pretty water and was, LIKE i
- 37:08Speaker 12: need to go.
- 37:09Speaker 13: There you, Know, Morgan we just opened up another unit
- 37:12Speaker 13: of The Devil's River State Natural. Area it's called The DAN.
- 37:15Speaker 13: A Hughes, unit and it's about fourteen miles downriver from
- 37:19Speaker 13: The Del norte.
- 37:20Speaker 12: Unit that's, right and in, fact that's the other reason
- 37:23Speaker 12: why we're going on this. Trip me and a couple
- 37:25Speaker 12: of women from the magazine wanted to test out the
- 37:28Speaker 12: new self shuttling option between these two.
- 37:30Speaker 14: Units that's.
- 37:32Speaker 12: Great, Yeah i'm very excited to try it out and
- 37:35Speaker 12: see what. Happens But i'll tell You i'm a little
- 37:38Speaker 12: nervous about bringing my mom for two. Reasons so the
- 37:41Speaker 12: first being she's not particularly. OUTDOORSY i think she's maybe
- 37:45Speaker 12: camped three or four times in her. Life and the
- 37:48Speaker 12: other reason The Devil's river is known for being one
- 37:51Speaker 12: of the most unforgiving waterways in the state Of. Texas
- 37:55Speaker 12: it's extremely, remote practically in the, desert and prone to
- 37:58Speaker 12: flash bloods and heavy DOWN i think she'll do totally,
- 38:02Speaker 12: fine BUT i really want her to enjoy, yourself AND
- 38:05Speaker 12: i don't want to scare her away from future camping.
- 38:07Speaker 13: Experiences, WELL i think you're doing all the prep work
- 38:10Speaker 13: that you need, to and you know she's going to
- 38:13Speaker 13: be fine coming out of.
- 38:14Speaker 14: It, well see how it.
- 38:16Speaker 12: GOES i, mean she's really an optimistic, person SO i
- 38:19Speaker 12: think she'll make it.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Okay, WELL i can't wait to hear how it goes me.
- 38:22Speaker 12: Too, David AND i Think i'm ready to find out
- 38:24Speaker 12: what happens when we go.
- 38:26Speaker 14: Outside SO i called up one of the superintendents of
- 38:29Speaker 14: the park to give me the inside.
- 38:30Speaker 15: SCOOP i Am Kevin. Stafford i'm the site superintendent of
- 38:35Speaker 15: The Dan Allen Hughes unit of The Devil River State Natural.
- 38:39Speaker 15: Area we are located about twenty miles north Of Del,
- 38:44Speaker 15: rio so we're down on the Southern texas. Border, now
- 38:47Speaker 15: let's take a little over an hour to get out.
- 38:48Speaker 15: Here it's not a straight shot From Del, rio but
- 38:51Speaker 15: we are just up The Devil's river From Lake amistad
- 38:54Speaker 15: and we actually share our southern border with that.
- 38:56Speaker 12: Lake and what's special about The Devil's River State Natural, Area,
- 39:02Speaker 12: like what is there to do out?
- 39:04Speaker 14: There what's the main?
- 39:04Speaker 15: Attraction, well the name of the State naturalia is really
- 39:09Speaker 15: the main. Attraction The Devil's river is a springfread. River
- 39:13Speaker 15: it is the most pristine riverway In texas and it's
- 39:16Speaker 15: a deep canyon that The Springfread river flows. Through we
- 39:20Speaker 15: have low traffic through, it so it's not the bumper
- 39:23Speaker 15: to bumper inner tubes like The Guadalupe river and stuff
- 39:27Speaker 15: In Central. Texas we have several endangered species in the
- 39:30Speaker 15: river that we are trying to preserve and, protect and
- 39:33Speaker 15: it gives you that field of Wild texas What texas
- 39:36Speaker 15: used to be like pre.
- 39:37Speaker 14: Development when you say it's pristine what do you, mean,
- 39:42Speaker 14: like is it just really clear? Water is it really clean?
- 39:45Speaker 15: Water WHEN i say, Pristine i'm talking about water quality
- 39:49Speaker 15: and kind of human impact onto. It we don't have
- 39:53Speaker 15: a lot of development out. Here there are the old
- 39:55Speaker 15: traditional ranches surrounding, it but these are big. Ranches they've
- 39:58Speaker 15: been families for a long. Time there are some river
- 40:01Speaker 15: cabins and, stuff but there's very minimal human. Impact the
- 40:05Speaker 15: water that is feeding The Devil rivers is coming out of.
- 40:08Speaker 15: Springs that's all spring. Spread if you think about the
- 40:11Speaker 15: big springs like In New Bronze fells are In austin
- 40:15Speaker 15: that come out of The edwards Oct we're similar, here
- 40:18Speaker 15: but we are in a low human population, area so
- 40:22Speaker 15: the water is extremely. Clean we don't recommend people drinking
- 40:26Speaker 15: it and stuff like that because it hasn't been, chlorinated
- 40:29Speaker 15: but to be, honest it is probably one of the
- 40:31Speaker 15: cleanest waters we have In.
- 40:32Speaker 12: Texas what's the difference between a state natural area and
- 40:36Speaker 12: a state?
- 40:36Speaker 14: Park is that? Important it is.
- 40:39Speaker 15: Important the main goal Of Texas park And wilocke is
- 40:42Speaker 15: to conserve the natural and cultural resources of the state
- 40:46Speaker 15: while also providing, opportunities the ability for people to get
- 40:50Speaker 15: out and, recreate whether that's, fishing, hiking, hunting, whatever but
- 40:54Speaker 15: to get out and do the recreational. Activities when we
- 40:56Speaker 15: think of a park and we think of a state natural,
- 40:59Speaker 15: area the emphasis shifts a little more towards the conservation.
- 41:03Speaker 15: Side for a state natural, area most parks are open
- 41:07Speaker 15: seven days a. Week we're open four days a. Week
- 41:10Speaker 15: and that is because we're playing this balancing game of
- 41:13Speaker 15: letting the natural, resource the, wildlife the, plants the, animals
- 41:17Speaker 15: and even the whole a quality ecosystem have time to
- 41:21Speaker 15: recover and go back to that natural state away from
- 41:25Speaker 15: the human influence and. Impact we also have low visitation.
- 41:29Speaker 15: Numbers we don't have a thousand people coming in a
- 41:31Speaker 15: day because that would put a heavy impact on the,
- 41:33Speaker 15: resource so we keep our visitation down. Load The Devil's
- 41:37Speaker 15: river is subdivided into two. Units we have a northern
- 41:40Speaker 15: unit called The Deal North Day, unit And i'm at
- 41:43Speaker 15: the southern unit called The Dan Allen Hughes. Unit on
- 41:47Speaker 15: those The Del North day, unit we allow it to
- 41:50Speaker 15: seventy five people a day in and that it's capped
- 41:53Speaker 15: to help preserve that natural. Resource here at the southern
- 41:56Speaker 15: unit go up to probably a similar number of, this
- 42:00Speaker 15: but right now we are still kind of in the development.
- 42:03Speaker 15: Stays we're building campgrounds and we're kept at twenty five
- 42:06Speaker 15: people a day right, now which is why we are
- 42:09Speaker 15: kind of a reservation only visitation.
- 42:11Speaker 12: Spot and what's the difference between these two units at
- 42:17Speaker 12: The Devil's Riversity Natural? Area is there like a visible?
- 42:21Speaker 12: Difference tell me about the distinguishing factors between.
- 42:25Speaker 15: Them each unit has a very distinct fide. Book they
- 42:29Speaker 15: feel completely. Different, yes to. Both on The Devils river
- 42:33Speaker 15: straight line distance twenty miles to get from the headquarters
- 42:37Speaker 15: at the Doll And hughes unit to the headquarters of
- 42:40Speaker 15: The dalmorte. Unit you're looking at for most people an
- 42:44Speaker 15: hour and fifteen to an hour and a half drive
- 42:47Speaker 15: to get back to the main highway that connects. Them
- 42:50Speaker 15: when you drive into the Del norte, unit you're primarily
- 42:55Speaker 15: down in the canyons and, valleys down into kind of
- 42:59Speaker 15: the heart of the park that then connects to the.
- 43:02Speaker 15: River when you come into The Dan Allen hughes, unit
- 43:05Speaker 15: you're up on the top kind of the, plateau the
- 43:07Speaker 15: wind swept, area and then you drop down into those
- 43:11Speaker 15: valleys to gain river. Access but much of the time
- 43:14Speaker 15: you're spending up on the, plateau so you get different.
- 43:17Speaker 15: Fills Del norte you're kind of down in the denser,
- 43:20Speaker 15: vegetation the trees down in the canyons at The Dan Allen.
- 43:24Speaker 15: Hughes you're up on the plateau with the, yuccas the
- 43:27Speaker 15: cactie things like, That so they have distinct.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Trels and you.
- 43:32Speaker 12: Mentioned that the main attraction out there is the river
- 43:35Speaker 12: and people like to go see. That OBVIOUSLY i have
- 43:38Speaker 12: been out. There it's really really. Pretty it's like the most,
- 43:41Speaker 12: gorgeous LIKE i don't know you could tan ish Water
- 43:46Speaker 12: i've ever seen In. Texas but what do people actually
- 43:50Speaker 12: do in the, River like do people paddle between?
- 43:53Speaker 14: Them do people? Swim how do they utilize that?
- 43:56Speaker 15: Resource we see various youths on the. River we do
- 44:00Speaker 15: have lots of anglers that come out to go. Fishing
- 44:02Speaker 15: there's lots of people like to do fly fishing out.
- 44:04Speaker 15: Here now we are a protected, water so north Of Lake,
- 44:09Speaker 15: amistad which pretty much is both of our, units is
- 44:13Speaker 15: a spawning habitat if you want to think of that
- 44:15Speaker 15: way for our large and smallmouth. Bass so if they catch,
- 44:18Speaker 15: them release only area for those fishes a lot of,
- 44:21Speaker 15: people you, know they bring their family, out let kids
- 44:24Speaker 15: go swim around in the, river just once you expect
- 44:26Speaker 15: with your normal river. Activity at the north Unit Del,
- 44:30Speaker 15: norte there are a lot of big Springs finnegan springs
- 44:34Speaker 15: that discharge out of the, rocks and the kids love
- 44:37Speaker 15: playing in the springs where cascades over the. Rocks most
- 44:41Speaker 15: people that come, out when they think of the, dovers
- 44:43Speaker 15: they're thinking of a canoe or a kayak trip down the.
- 44:46Speaker 15: River when we're looking at the two, parks The Del northey,
- 44:50Speaker 15: unit we only have about a mile of river access
- 44:53Speaker 15: that the park directly butts up against the. River when
- 44:56Speaker 15: we go to the southern, unit we're looking at closer
- 44:59Speaker 15: to six miles of riverfront that The State Natural area
- 45:03Speaker 15: is adjacent. To, now the distance between the two parks
- 45:07Speaker 15: where the public usually is kayaking in your canoe is
- 45:10Speaker 15: about sixteen. Miles most of, that of, course is through private.
- 45:14Speaker 15: Land so one of the things that we do strongly
- 45:18Speaker 15: encourage is please respect the private. Land these are ranchers
- 45:22Speaker 15: and families that are adjacent to the. River this is
- 45:25Speaker 15: a natural. Waterway people are allowed to go down, it
- 45:29Speaker 15: but we've got to remember that the natural waterway in
- 45:31Speaker 15: the state Of texas is within the boundaries of that
- 45:33Speaker 15: stream or that. River most people won't enjoy the river
- 45:37Speaker 15: and they don't want to just rush through as quick
- 45:39Speaker 15: as they can and get from one edit to the,
- 45:41Speaker 15: other so they will spend two or three days on the.
- 45:44Speaker 15: River that, way they can go, swimming they can go,
- 45:46Speaker 15: fishing they can just kind of leisurely go down the
- 45:48Speaker 15: river and fully enjoy. It while doing, that to make
- 45:52Speaker 15: sure we protect the private land owner, rights most people
- 45:56Speaker 15: will choose to camp on islands within the river so
- 45:59Speaker 15: they're not accidentally trespassing on anybuy's, land or they can
- 46:02Speaker 15: stay at one of our paddlers camp that we've. Established
- 46:05Speaker 15: we've actually made an agreement with a private landowner to
- 46:08Speaker 15: lease some property so that campers can stay there and
- 46:13Speaker 15: be in a place there allowed to be without fear of.
- 46:16Speaker 15: Trespassing you, know if you lock the, outdoors you like
- 46:18Speaker 15: true isolation and you love being on the, water it's
- 46:22Speaker 15: hard to pass. Up we're losing spaces like this around the,
- 46:26Speaker 15: world and of course here In.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Texas SO i.
- 46:30Speaker 12: Have had the experience of going out and paddling on
- 46:33Speaker 12: The Devil's. River i've taken a big group of my
- 46:36Speaker 12: friends out there in the, past and it was not
- 46:41Speaker 12: as scary as some people have chalked it up to,
- 46:44Speaker 12: be but it was logistically, challenging like just to get out.
- 46:50Speaker 12: There how would you characterize the, Trip, like do you
- 46:53Speaker 12: think that people should fear it as much as it's?
- 46:56Speaker 12: Described what would you advise visitors who are one to
- 47:00Speaker 12: do something like.
- 47:01Speaker 15: THAT i don't think this is something to. Fear but
- 47:05Speaker 15: you need to be comfortable in the. Outdoors you will
- 47:08Speaker 15: be on the, river you will be in remote. Areas
- 47:11Speaker 15: if you use basic, safety then it is perfectly sound
- 47:16Speaker 15: and a great recreational. Opportunity you know where your life.
- 47:19Speaker 15: Best you don't know when your kayak might tumble, over
- 47:22Speaker 15: so where your life and enjoy the. Experience you're on
- 47:26Speaker 15: the water the whole, time so you're kind of down
- 47:29Speaker 15: in the, canyon kind of protecting from the. Sun a
- 47:31Speaker 15: lot of the. TIME i will say that sometimes the
- 47:33Speaker 15: wind gets a little strong coming up that, canyon so
- 47:35Speaker 15: you met that paddle a little harder than you want
- 47:37Speaker 15: to some. Days but if you're, lucky the next, day
- 47:40Speaker 15: the one's coming from your, backside you have to paddle
- 47:41Speaker 15: less that. Day but really there's not much to. Fear
- 47:45Speaker 15: many sections you can easily walk. Through the water is
- 47:49Speaker 15: not that. Deep there are going to be those deeper
- 47:51Speaker 15: pools where you can really enjoy kind of jumping in
- 47:53Speaker 15: and splashing and swimming. Around but then you also got
- 47:56Speaker 15: long stretches that are just, beautiful crystal, clear shallow water
- 48:00Speaker 15: that you can just leisurely paddle.
- 48:01Speaker 12: Through we have not had The Dana hughes unit in
- 48:05Speaker 12: our possession for very, long have.
- 48:06Speaker 15: We we have not headed in our possession for a
- 48:09Speaker 15: very long. Time, yes and it hasn't been open to
- 48:11Speaker 15: the public for but a few.
- 48:13Speaker 12: Months and what's the significance of having more public land
- 48:18Speaker 12: in this area and on this.
- 48:20Speaker 15: Waterway there as various perspectives on. That, obviously one of
- 48:24Speaker 15: the biggest significance is we are taking another large tract
- 48:29Speaker 15: to land and we're. Conserving we're making sure this resource
- 48:33Speaker 15: is not accessible for people, today but it will remain
- 48:37Speaker 15: accessible for future. Generations as part of, that the conservation
- 48:41Speaker 15: plan is going to be there for the next generation
- 48:45Speaker 15: so that it doesn't become contaminated or degraded over. Time
- 48:49Speaker 15: we're trying to preserve that. Resource. Now the other thing
- 48:53Speaker 15: from a more accessibility standpoint is by having the two
- 48:57Speaker 15: units with a significant river in between, them it now
- 49:02Speaker 15: enables people to what we call self. Shuttling people can
- 49:07Speaker 15: actually stage a vehicle at the Dan Allen hughes. Unit
- 49:11Speaker 15: they can then drive up to the north, unit put
- 49:14Speaker 15: their kayaks into the, river and then float down to
- 49:17Speaker 15: the other, unit so they can kind of see the
- 49:19Speaker 15: river on their own. Timescale they can have a little
- 49:23Speaker 15: more flexibility in their planning by being able to stage
- 49:26Speaker 15: vehicles at both ends if you've got a group. Coming
- 49:28Speaker 15: in the, past because the southern, unit The Danland Hughes,
- 49:32Speaker 15: unit was closed to the, public the only way that
- 49:36Speaker 15: it could be accessed was through private concessionaires and things
- 49:40Speaker 15: like that that could get into the. Property so this
- 49:42Speaker 15: really it opens up the accessibility to a much wider.
- 49:46Speaker 14: Audience that's self shuttling. Ability is that something we can
- 49:51Speaker 14: go out and do.
- 49:51Speaker 15: Now we can do it now it is. Available we
- 49:55Speaker 15: are still working out some of the minor details AS i,
- 49:58Speaker 15: say with. It LIKE i, said The daniel And hughes
- 50:01Speaker 15: unit has only been open Since january of this, year
- 50:05Speaker 15: so we're still working on. It we're still building campground
- 50:07Speaker 15: here at The State Natural area That i'm part. Of
- 50:10Speaker 15: but you have the ability to do, that and we've
- 50:12Speaker 15: already seen several people over the past couple of months
- 50:16Speaker 15: take advantage of. That it takes a little more planning
- 50:19Speaker 15: on the part of the individuals because you've got to
- 50:21Speaker 15: be able to stage a vehicle at both. Units but,
- 50:25Speaker 15: realistically it's always going to be a little bit of
- 50:28Speaker 15: logistic that goes into visiting The Devil's, river whether you
- 50:31Speaker 15: go through a concessionaire or you arrange for self.
- 50:33Speaker 12: Shuttling and prior to becoming a park, superintendent you had
- 50:39Speaker 12: a different career.
- 50:40Speaker 14: Path is that?
- 50:40Speaker 15: RIGHT i had a very different career. Path, yes that is.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Correct what were you?
- 50:45Speaker 15: DOING i was a hydro geology professor At STEVEN. F
- 50:51Speaker 15: Austin State, university so that's in Far East, texas almost
- 50:54Speaker 15: In louisiana's And. Macdesia's SO i taught, hydrology hydro, geology,
- 51:00Speaker 15: groundwater pretty much everything On sourciut with, water AND i
- 51:04Speaker 15: focus heavily on WHAT i call karst. Research and karst
- 51:09Speaker 15: is just a gentle term that describes land that's filled
- 51:13Speaker 15: with caves and springs and the whole connecting of. Water so,
- 51:18Speaker 15: actually by coming To Devils. RIVER i now get to
- 51:22Speaker 15: live in the exact environment THAT i was teaching.
- 51:25Speaker 14: About how.
- 51:27Speaker 12: Cool and is there anything about The Devil's river and
- 51:30Speaker 12: The Dana Hues unit in particular that's particularly interesting from
- 51:34Speaker 12: a hydro geological, Standpoint.
- 51:37Speaker 15: Well, definitely we are still at the infancy of understanding
- 51:41Speaker 15: how that all the groundwater is circulating through. Here it
- 51:43Speaker 15: is extremely. Complex but just the numerous springs that are
- 51:48Speaker 15: coming out of the ground, everywhere that's all this deep
- 51:51Speaker 15: deep water circulation flow. Pass we also have the surface
- 51:55Speaker 15: where there's evidence that there's probably some caves out. Here
- 51:59Speaker 15: we haven't found a, lot but it's a, complex interconnected.
- 52:02Speaker 15: System this is not a river that has dried up
- 52:07Speaker 15: in the past and has then kind of. Rejuvenated it's
- 52:10Speaker 15: a long running river with sustained water to develop fish
- 52:15Speaker 15: species and muscle species that are unique to this. Area
- 52:19Speaker 15: so it's a beautifully complex area that we can only
- 52:22Speaker 15: learn more.
- 52:22Speaker 14: About can you give me a few examples of those unique.
- 52:25Speaker 15: Species, well there's The Devil's river pup fish that kind
- 52:29Speaker 15: of lives in the splash areas around the. Springs there
- 52:33Speaker 15: is a freshwater, mussel And i'm not a muscle, expert
- 52:36Speaker 15: SO i cannot remember the name of. It and, then
- 52:38Speaker 15: of course the river is unique in that it provides
- 52:41Speaker 15: this large scale spawning ground for lots of smaller fishs
- 52:44Speaker 15: and bass species and. Stuff it's a stable habitat that
- 52:48Speaker 15: the local fauna has learned over millennia to utilize as
- 52:52Speaker 15: a breeding.
- 52:52Speaker 14: Ground The Dana huesiena is pretty.
- 52:55Speaker 12: Large is there anything else to do out there besides
- 52:58Speaker 12: seeing the river and doing things inside the.
- 53:00Speaker 15: Water, HONESTLY i hope that people will learn to appreciate
- 53:04Speaker 15: the parks the WAY i. Do out here at The
- 53:06Speaker 15: State Natural, areas we do have lots of. Trails we
- 53:09Speaker 15: have biking, Trails we have piking trails between The North
- 53:13Speaker 15: unit and The South. Unit we have well over ten
- 53:15Speaker 15: miles of trails already and we're working towards adding some additional.
- 53:19Speaker 15: Ones we have rock. Arts we are in the kind
- 53:24Speaker 15: of The Pecos valley area as it's, referred that has
- 53:28Speaker 15: rock art that's six to eight thousand years. Old many
- 53:30Speaker 15: people have heard Of Seminal, canyon which is another state
- 53:34Speaker 15: park in the area that's well known for its shelters
- 53:37Speaker 15: with prehistoric rock art in. It and we have several
- 53:40Speaker 15: sites out, here but we do guided tours.
- 53:42Speaker 4: Too it was after a hailstorm a few years. BACK
- 53:45Speaker 4: i needed a new. Roof, YEAH i shopped around and
- 53:48Speaker 4: THEN i Found Shorlty roofing In. Point i'm GLAD i.
- 53:50Speaker 4: Did the folks At shulty guided me every step of the.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Way they showed me my. Options they told me what
- 53:55Speaker 4: my out of pocket cost would be after. Insurance they
- 53:58Speaker 4: took the complication out of an otherwise very stressful. Situation
- 54:02Speaker 4: they took off the damaged, roof put on the new,
- 54:04Speaker 4: roof did all to clean, up AND i had my
- 54:05Speaker 4: new roof in one.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Day the whole bollyroof room.
