Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Two strong earthquakes have hit near Venezuela's capital, Kadrakas. Let's
- 0:04Speaker 1: show you these live images now from the ground in Caracas.
- 0:08Speaker 1: As you can see there we look at what is
- 0:10Speaker 1: looking to be appearing to be a collapsed building. The
- 0:13Speaker 1: first quake had a magnitude of seven point one. That
- 0:17Speaker 1: was followed by a seven point five magnitude quake soon after.
- 0:20Speaker 1: That's according to the US Geological Survey and earlier tsunami
- 0:25Speaker 1: warning has now been canceled for Puerto Rico, the US
- 0:28Speaker 1: Virgin Islands, and the British Virgin Islands. Now, the Geological
- 0:32Speaker 1: Survey says high casualties and extensive damage are probable in
- 0:36Speaker 1: Venezuela after the quake. Residents in neighboring Columbia also reported
- 0:40Speaker 1: filling tremors. Of many Venezuelans were at home celebrating a
- 0:43Speaker 1: public holiday. We understand when the quake hit. Let's bring
- 0:47Speaker 1: in our correspondent Will Grant, who is monitoring the situation
- 0:50Speaker 1: for us from Mexico City. Will, good to see you.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Just bring us up to date on what you've been hearing.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it sounds like they were quinn and both very
- 1:01Speaker 2: hard earthquakes, very strong earthquakes truly rattled the capital, Kadakas,
- 1:06Speaker 2: as you said, felt as far afield as Bogota. Tsunami
- 1:10Speaker 2: warnings initially for parts of the Caribbean, including Boneide and
- 1:13Speaker 2: ad Ubert now thankfully been lifted for residents in those
- 1:17Speaker 2: parts of the world, but of course in Kadakas, people
- 1:20Speaker 2: still unsure if all of their family members are safe
- 1:24Speaker 2: and well. There are people who have cracked and damaged
- 1:26Speaker 2: buildings and therefore are still in the streets and very
- 1:29Speaker 2: fearful of the potential after shocks, too scared essentially to
- 1:33Speaker 2: go back into their apartment buildings. And of course people
- 1:36Speaker 2: also of course trying to get in touch with family
- 1:38Speaker 2: members in the affected state of Kadaboble and trying to
- 1:42Speaker 2: establish just how bad matters are there. The Interior Minister,
- 1:46Speaker 2: they of dal Cave, has been on state television and
- 1:49Speaker 2: said that there are downed buildings, that some buildings have collapsed,
- 1:53Speaker 2: but we don't know if there are people inside them
- 1:55Speaker 2: at the time, or just how bad things are. We're
- 1:58Speaker 2: still trying to establish just how bleak the picture is.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Indeed, well that's it looks like what we're looking at
- 2:04Speaker 1: right now. From these images we were getting at the
- 2:05Speaker 1: moment from Karakas emergency services. On hand, I just want
- 2:10Speaker 1: to ask you before we let you go, what do
- 2:12Speaker 1: we know about this region where these quakes have struck.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Well at Karaboro is an important state, it's upon economic
- 2:23Speaker 2: motor for the country. It includes the city of Valencia.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Now I've been to that part of Venezuela a number
- 2:31Speaker 2: of times. Buildings are reasonably robust, but of course across Venezuela,
- 2:36Speaker 2: particularly the rural parts where there are a lot of shacks,
- 2:39Speaker 2: and of course sor the thronging the capital Karrakas, there
- 2:43Speaker 2: are these shanty towns, the barrios, the famous barrios of Caracas,
- 2:47Speaker 2: where the homes are very poorly constructed, very flimsy, often
- 2:52Speaker 2: just brick shacks. So there's plenty of potential for widespread damage. Again,
- 2:57Speaker 2: I think we will start getting updates reasonably soon from
- 3:01Speaker 2: the authorities, such as sort of the KLAMA for information
- 3:04Speaker 2: and the potential for disinformation on social media at a
- 3:07Speaker 2: time like.
- 3:07Speaker 1: This, Yeah, of course, Okay, well, thank you very much.
- 3:10Speaker 1: From Mexico City, they're monitoring the situation for us there
- 3:14Speaker 1: and we'll just continue to look at some of those
- 3:16Speaker 1: live pictures from Caracas if we can. That is the
- 3:19Speaker 1: image that we have at this hour. Of course it
- 3:21Speaker 1: is dark. You see emergency services on hand and just
- 3:24Speaker 1: the rubble there of what appears to be a building
- 3:27Speaker 1: in the capitol. We don't have any information, as Will
- 3:31Speaker 1: said there yet about injuries, about possible casualties if anyone
- 3:35Speaker 1: was in these buildings that have been downed, as confirmed
- 3:38Speaker 1: by the Interior Ministry. As we said, the first quake
- 3:41Speaker 1: a magnitude of seven point one, followed by a seven
- 3:44Speaker 1: point five magnitude quakes soon after. Certainly good news that
- 3:48Speaker 1: that initial tsunami warning that had been issued for Puerto
- 3:52Speaker 1: Rico and Bonaire that has now been recalled as we understand,
- 3:58Speaker 1: But at this moment we're waiting to hear some more
- 4:00Speaker 1: information about what indeed has happened. The BBC's Vanessa Silva
- 4:05Speaker 1: was able to sent us this report from Karakas itself.
- 4:10Speaker 3: I'm in the center of the city of Karakas, where
- 4:12Speaker 3: a lot of buildings are without power electricity after the
- 4:16Speaker 3: airthquake got hit the north of the Venezuela around six
- 4:21Speaker 3: in the afternoon today. A lot of people are trying
- 4:23Speaker 3: to look how to go back to their homes. The
- 4:27Speaker 3: metro system is completely closed all these stations, so it
- 4:31Speaker 3: was just at the time that people were getting all
- 4:34Speaker 3: the words before even that today is a holiday lay
- 4:37Speaker 3: in Kalaka, Venezuela. All the scripture jakes very strong in
- 4:42Speaker 3: the capital. In my home, I can see how many
- 4:45Speaker 3: things fell down. I'm broken in my building, I neighborhood,
- 4:50Speaker 3: one of my neighborhoods. She fell down and break her arms.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I don't know at this moment how many victims, but
- 5:01Speaker 3: we can see videos coming from social media from infrastructure
- 5:05Speaker 3: collapses in the city and the news will be coming
- 5:09Speaker 3: on in the next hours.
