- 0:12Speaker 1: This is the wheel of Time. Spoilers podcast.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Recording is on, and uh, we've got a pair of
- 0:28Speaker 2: chapters today to get through.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Boy do we?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Boy? Do we? Uh? This this is this is like
- 0:38Speaker 2: everyone hashes on the Malden plot with Paren. This is
- 0:42Speaker 2: so much worse. This is really the part of Parent.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Like the Malden plot was only six chapters altogether, spread
- 0:49Speaker 2: across like three books, four books. Like, it's just not
- 0:53Speaker 2: very much content. This going back and forth on Paren,
- 0:58Speaker 2: over and over and over again. It's too much. It's
- 1:02Speaker 2: too much. We moved beyond this. The wolf Head banner
- 1:06Speaker 2: doesn't need to be taken down again. We've moved beyond it.
- 1:09Speaker 2: But yet we're doing it. We're doing it in these chapters.
- 1:11Speaker 2: We're taking down the wolf Heed banner. A and again.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Ah, I don't even have words. I just have screaming.
- 1:20Speaker 2: This is going to be the tone of the podcast.
- 1:22Speaker 2: If you do not want to listen to the tone
- 1:24Speaker 2: of that podcast, please exit last Please. We will be
- 1:29Speaker 2: back the next chapter with a more positive tone. But
- 1:32Speaker 2: oh my god, except for the little Lamb segue, which
- 1:36Speaker 2: even that was like pretty pretty mid these are just
- 1:39Speaker 2: these are hard chapters to get through.
- 1:41Speaker 1: Next week We'll get to Matt and we'll have more fun,
- 1:43Speaker 1: I promise. But for now, buckle down, gird your loins,
- 1:48Speaker 1: get a stick to bite on.
- 1:50Speaker 2: We gotta do this, Queen more Case, would you care
- 1:52Speaker 2: to read us in to these chapters?
- 1:55Speaker 1: Oh god, I'm just so much focusing on pair and
- 1:57Speaker 1: being the problem. I'm waiting for you to do the honors, all.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Right, just because it's I mean, it might as well
- 2:03Speaker 2: be parents pov, but somehow it's Morgaze's POV.
- 2:07Speaker 1: It's different, novelty.
- 2:09Speaker 2: You get to think about Tea a little bit. Oh Honestly,
- 2:12Speaker 2: the most entertaining part of the chapter for me is
- 2:16Speaker 2: her serving tea and her little thoughts about how to
- 2:19Speaker 2: do it best and what people's preferences.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Are, which I just don't care for. Shall we say?
- 2:27Speaker 2: I bit do the reading and then okay, okay, we'll
- 2:31Speaker 2: talk about it when we get there.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Chapter six, Questioning Intentions and our symbol is the Blacksmith's puzzle,
- 2:39Speaker 1: Margaye's Treckand once Queen of and Or served Tea, she
- 2:43Speaker 1: moved from person to person in the large pavilion paren
- 2:46Speaker 1: had taken from Maldon. It had sides that could be
- 2:49Speaker 1: rolled up and no tent floor. Large though the tent was,
- 2:53Speaker 1: there was barely enough room for all who had wanted
- 2:56Speaker 1: to attend the meeting. Paren and Faya were there, of course.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Sitting the ground. Next to them sat golden eyed Elias
- 3:03Speaker 1: and tam Althor, the simple farmer with the broad shoulders
- 3:06Speaker 1: and the calm manners. Was this man really the father
- 3:10Speaker 1: of the dragon re born? Of course, Morgaze had seen
- 3:13Speaker 1: Randolphor once, and the boy hadn't looked much more than
- 3:16Speaker 1: a farmer himself. Beside Tam sat parent's dusty secretary, Seben Balwer.
- 3:21Speaker 1: How much should Paran know of his past jury? Grady
- 3:24Speaker 1: was there, also, wearing his black coat with a silver
- 3:27Speaker 1: sword pin on the collar. His leathery farmer's face was
- 3:30Speaker 1: hollow eyed and still pale from the sickness he'd suffered recently. Nil,
- 3:34Speaker 1: the other Aushamon, was not there. He hadn't yet recovered
- 3:37Speaker 1: from his snake bites. All three eyes to die were there,
- 3:41Speaker 1: said and Massuri sat with the wise Ones and Honors
- 3:44Speaker 1: opposide Beryline, occasionally shooting glances at the six wise Ones.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Gallienne sat on Beryline's other side. Across from them sat
- 3:52Speaker 1: Aleandra and Arganda, the officers made Morgaze think of Gareth Brynn.
- 3:58Speaker 1: She hadn't seen him in a long while, not since
- 4:00Speaker 1: she'd exceled him for a reason she still couldn't quite explain.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Very little about that time in her life made sense
- 4:06Speaker 1: to her.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Now.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Had she really been so infatuated with a man she'd
- 4:10Speaker 1: banished Amelin and the Laurian? Anyway, those days were gone now.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Margez picked her way carefully through the room and saw
- 4:18Speaker 1: that people's cups were kept full. It was a long reading,
- 4:21Speaker 1: but I just wanted to show off how many names
- 4:23Speaker 1: I could get, right, So Jesus I was.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Gonna say, is that just a list of that's a
- 4:29Speaker 2: name recap list right off the top? Just check check
- 4:32Speaker 2: check check, check, check check, Like I haven't forgotten about
- 4:34Speaker 2: these characters, these characters are these characters? Like and with
- 4:37Speaker 2: a little bit of a recap thrown in.
- 4:38Speaker 1: There, Yeah, it was just so many names. Because she's
- 4:42Speaker 1: a panning shot across the entire tent. It's a perfect
- 4:45Speaker 1: POV to get away with doing that sort of a listicle.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Who's who?
- 4:49Speaker 2: I guess I do like the I mean her POV.
- 4:53Speaker 2: She's not sure why she did what she did back
- 4:57Speaker 2: in and or they're making a point of that that
- 4:59Speaker 2: she's not aware of the compulsion. She's not aware that
- 5:02Speaker 2: she was under the control of Rovin the whole time.
- 5:06Speaker 1: It really reminded me of the line that Gowan was
- 5:09Speaker 1: saying in the last episode about not thinking about his
- 5:12Speaker 1: mother very much. It was kind of almost the same
- 5:16Speaker 1: kind of a sentiment of just like, huh, there's this weird,
- 5:18Speaker 1: fuzzy blank spot in my past that I don't really
- 5:20Speaker 1: think about much, Like she's thinking about it more than
- 5:23Speaker 1: Gowin is thinking about his equivalent hole. But it kind
- 5:25Speaker 1: of reminded me of that, like, huh, this is what
- 5:28Speaker 1: post compulsion looks like.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm just saying that.
- 5:34Speaker 1: The weakest theory I've heard worse from you.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Oh God, I'm so sorry. I know I've come up
- 5:47Speaker 2: with some stinkers in my day, but you tried talking
- 5:50Speaker 2: as many hours as we do and don't come up
- 5:51Speaker 2: with a few bad exactly exactly.
- 5:55Speaker 1: So, yeah, she's doing tea while we'd start out with
- 5:58Speaker 1: a very reasonable discuss about picking up on the blight
- 6:01Speaker 1: village and how did the burning of that go before
- 6:03Speaker 1: we get into ridiculous nonsense. But she's doing tea throughout
- 6:07Speaker 1: the whole thing, and in.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Skirts, dividing for writing yeap not pants not but they're
- 6:14Speaker 2: not not pants.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Marga thinks about how her life is basically the same
- 6:21Speaker 1: as being at the shadow camp, except not being beaten,
- 6:23Speaker 1: which I'm like, great, glad, we're not going to spend
- 6:26Speaker 1: huge amounts of pages on that, right.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, being an indentured servant just like being a
- 6:34Speaker 2: slave without the beatings. Woooo, let's talk about capitalism.
- 6:38Speaker 1: She feels really good about having value, you know, because
- 6:41Speaker 1: she's able to contribute and like bring value to the
- 6:44Speaker 1: society through selling of her labor. She feels like a person. Yeah,
- 6:50Speaker 1: I don't I don't love it. I don't love her
- 6:52Speaker 1: finding her life purpose through serving tea and being married,
- 6:58Speaker 1: but at the same time as a rebound for being queen.
- 7:00Speaker 1: I do kind of get it.
- 7:02Speaker 2: But she's also being like, the better I serve Tea,
- 7:04Speaker 2: the closer I get to power. The closer I get
- 7:06Speaker 2: to power, the more I know about what's going on.
- 7:07Speaker 2: The more I know about what's going on, the more
- 7:09Speaker 2: I can have an influence. This woman does not want
- 7:12Speaker 2: to step away from power.
- 7:14Speaker 1: No, but much like paren she's gonna spend a lot
- 7:16Speaker 1: of time telling us that she wants to step away
- 7:18Speaker 1: from power.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Yeah, oh totally.
- 7:21Speaker 1: She really is a great advisor to Parent. They're well matched.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Does she ever actually advise him? Doesn't she just like
- 7:28Speaker 2: go away once he learns that she's.
- 7:31Speaker 1: She provides some pretty cogent advice during the whole gallad thing,
- 7:35Speaker 1: like she's running interference into earth camps pretty solidly. And
- 7:39Speaker 1: I think she also gives him some advice before he
- 7:42Speaker 1: meets Elaine and then puts in a good word with
- 7:44Speaker 1: him for him with Elaine, like she she does advisory
- 7:48Speaker 1: stuff with him. I just can't. I almost wish, like
- 7:51Speaker 1: I almost think she should stay with him long term,
- 7:54Speaker 1: you know, in his Manetheerine Court, maybe that would be
- 7:57Speaker 1: a good thing.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I mean, I think in the last books that's technically
- 8:00Speaker 2: Elaine says, you are the Stewart. You're gonna be the
- 8:02Speaker 2: basically my diplomat to the Stewart of the two rivers
- 8:06Speaker 2: who is parent, right, So so yeah, she's basically gonna
- 8:09Speaker 2: be hanging out with Parent.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah, she is exactly. She is well on her way
- 8:13Speaker 1: to becoming a good advisor to paren.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that's what her journey is supposed
- 8:20Speaker 2: to be about, right, is this like person who was
- 8:22Speaker 2: a queen and in the similar that Suan who was
- 8:24Speaker 2: humbled and then came back up and became advisor to Aguayne. Right,
- 8:29Speaker 2: that sort of more Geyes's story. Sure, a different leader,
- 8:32Speaker 2: a different one of our two rivers.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Five right, like because it always has to be one
- 8:36Speaker 1: of the two rivers.
- 8:37Speaker 2: That's Teverian. Yeah, just little little things like Aleander expected
- 8:42Speaker 2: a cup to be full. I think those are a
- 8:44Speaker 2: little clever, like just sort of little character moments about
- 8:46Speaker 2: who they are, and like the way they like their teeth,
- 8:49Speaker 2: the way Parent like gestures around and can knock it
- 8:51Speaker 2: over and be careless, and the way the one likes
- 8:55Speaker 2: the Missouri likes the sip or tea when she's nervous
- 8:58Speaker 2: like this, there's a lot of good examples of these
- 9:01Speaker 2: little ticks about these people. I like that rounds up
- 9:03Speaker 2: those side characters. It gives them a little more personality
- 9:06Speaker 2: rather than five eyes at eye stood in the crowd
- 9:09Speaker 2: to open the gateway whenever Parent needed it, you know.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So yeah, I like that.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I like that. That's like that. That's why it's my
- 9:14Speaker 2: favorite part of this chapter, you know.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Sure, And there's also the whole weird thing with Oleandra,
- 9:19Speaker 1: where Like Oleandra was really hotty during Maldon, but now
- 9:22Speaker 1: she feels really uncertain about their relationship, where as fail
- 9:26Speaker 1: understood how leadership worked and came out of Malden understanding
- 9:29Speaker 1: how to go back into the hierarchy. And it's just
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, again, Margaze is a shrewd political operator, so
- 9:34Speaker 1: her thoughts on that are kind of clear and interesting
- 9:38Speaker 1: to be in the head of. But yeah, she's making
- 9:41Speaker 1: a bunch of observations and then telling herself to stop
- 9:43Speaker 1: cataloging all that information because it's.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Just it's as natural as breathing. That's politics to her, right,
- 9:48Speaker 2: is recognizing what everyone's motivations are, what they want to do,
- 9:52Speaker 2: you know, it's it's it's demonstrating that she's a good,
- 9:54Speaker 2: good politician. There's the plot line where paren keeps getting
- 9:57Speaker 2: more recruits and he keeps wanting to turn them away,
- 9:59Speaker 2: but they keep staying because Teverin needs troops, and I
- 10:04Speaker 2: wish he would just accept that instead of constantly trying
- 10:06Speaker 2: to send people away.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I mean, he even manages to insult Beryline in the
- 10:09Speaker 1: course of all this, like I need to get rid
- 10:11Speaker 1: of you, you and you and berylines, I didn't realize
- 10:13Speaker 1: you needed to get rid of me, given that I
- 10:16Speaker 1: just helped you retrieve your wife from a war camp.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Confusing turn of events and turn of feelings. Mister leader
- 10:24Speaker 1: not a leader, And I mean really that goes for
- 10:26Speaker 1: so many of them, right, And it turns out that
- 10:29Speaker 1: the math maths that he can't get rid of them
- 10:31Speaker 1: through gateways. But yeah, he keeps recruiting people and trying
- 10:35Speaker 1: to get rid of them. But it's like, why are
- 10:36Speaker 1: you getting rid of people? This is rude and ineffective.
- 10:40Speaker 1: It's stupid that.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Because he's got what like twenty thousand people I think
- 10:45Speaker 2: is the number.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Something like that, and he's trying to send them all
- 10:49Speaker 1: back and put it all back the way it was
- 10:51Speaker 1: so that with the last battle can just proceed without him.
- 10:53Speaker 1: And it's like, you have a giant army of people
- 10:56Speaker 1: who want to be here. This is a ridiculous thing
- 10:58Speaker 1: for us to spend so many pages on.
- 11:00Speaker 2: Right, No, go follow Rand. If you want to fight,
- 11:03Speaker 2: you you follow Rand. We are following Ran through you
- 11:07Speaker 2: Like that's still.
- 11:08Speaker 1: It's your job as one of the three. It's literally
- 11:11Speaker 1: your job. And you've known this since book one. Moraine
- 11:13Speaker 1: has been telling you that the three of you are important, like,
- 11:15Speaker 1: obviously this is your role.
- 11:17Speaker 2: And this is why I think this part of Parent
- 11:19Speaker 2: is really poorly written. Right. We forgive him for some
- 11:21Speaker 2: of the later like we like the teleporting teleroan Riad
- 11:24Speaker 2: magic stuff whatever, that's fun. This this is hard because
- 11:28Speaker 2: this feels like Parent again is reverting Matt had reverted.
- 11:32Speaker 2: I feel like all the characters reverted back to like
- 11:34Speaker 2: book five maybe characters.
- 11:37Speaker 1: He's still fighting the banner that he's been using from
- 11:40Speaker 1: multiple campaigns since book five ridiculous. Yeah, yeah, now he
- 11:44Speaker 1: insists I'm burning it, and of course, because plot it
- 11:47Speaker 1: doesn't actually get burned, he still keeps one and he's
- 11:49Speaker 1: happy that he has it later because yeah, this was
- 11:51Speaker 1: all just regression to let Sanderson feel comfortable writing the
- 11:55Speaker 1: actual progressed Parent.
- 11:57Speaker 2: You know, he ignores TAM's advice.
- 11:59Speaker 1: He does consult with fight You.
- 12:01Speaker 2: No, he tells them to go follow Rand and then yeah,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and so then finally they're like, okay, we can't send
- 12:08Speaker 2: everybody away. What can we do with gateways? And so
- 12:11Speaker 2: then he starts sort of going but it's like, Okay,
- 12:13Speaker 2: you just burned your banner and now you're commanding them
- 12:16Speaker 2: and telling them what to do with their gateways and
- 12:17Speaker 2: where to send people on how to basically deploy the forces.
- 12:21Speaker 2: What are you doing? Like, why are you if you're
- 12:24Speaker 2: not going to be the leader? Stopped acting like.
- 12:25Speaker 1: One right, He's like, well, my Ashaman can can't do this,
- 12:28Speaker 1: and my Ashamon can't do that, and I don't want
- 12:30Speaker 1: this happening to all these other people, and I can't
- 12:32Speaker 1: leave Gil and the others. Why are you taking so
- 12:35Speaker 1: much command while burning your banners? This was really cute
- 12:39Speaker 1: in book four when you had just started doing it,
- 12:41Speaker 1: but like it is old now.
- 12:43Speaker 2: So they send some messengers to Rand hopefully asking for
- 12:46Speaker 2: more Ashaman through the gateways.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Paulber really wants to get someone to Kyrie in and
- 12:50Speaker 1: angles for that, and it's.
- 12:52Speaker 2: A whole thing himself. Yea. Yeah.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And then we introduced the concept of circles because it's
- 12:58Speaker 1: really late in the series to Dopy talking about circles.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Right, right, it's just an assumption now that that information
- 13:04Speaker 2: is spread because all the eyes that I know about it, right,
- 13:07Speaker 2: So they've just not been talking about it at this point.
- 13:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a silly thing to not be talking about.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So we're talking about it. Yay, good, excellent. This is
- 13:15Speaker 1: the beginning of getting us to Alma alan Air. Right. Yes,
- 13:18Speaker 1: it gives us bigger gateways, but it also gives us
- 13:20Speaker 1: magic hammers totally.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And Bovara and Androl right, that whole relationship is very
- 13:25Speaker 2: much opens. They make form a circle and that's what
- 13:27Speaker 2: triggers there double bonding.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Mm hmm.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:30Speaker 1: And then Dara gives parents such a great line. You
- 13:33Speaker 1: hardly seem interested in your position as a chief. Most
- 13:36Speaker 1: of the time. Respect is the thing earned and not demanded.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Yeah, because love that bar.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Exactly what we've been saying, Like pared, you're both abdicating
- 13:44Speaker 1: responsibility and assuming it at the same time. This is ridiculous.
- 13:47Speaker 1: The AE agree with us. So again it's like Sanderson,
- 13:50Speaker 1: why are you doing this? You clearly know this is
- 13:52Speaker 1: annoying because you have the IEO pointing out that it's annoying,
- 13:56Speaker 1: So why are you subjecting us to this?
- 13:58Speaker 2: Do you think there's any reason for all were to
- 14:00Speaker 2: want to go to Kyrie in other than just he
- 14:02Speaker 2: has information and contacts there.
- 14:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he has. He knows that there's a
- 14:06Speaker 1: lot of male waiting for him that will catch him
- 14:08Speaker 1: up on world events. In Kyriene because of how his
- 14:10Speaker 1: agents are spread out. I don't think it's anything particularly
- 14:13Speaker 1: plot relevant, it's just how his network is set up.
- 14:16Speaker 1: And Sanid also really wants to go to Kyrie for
- 14:18Speaker 1: some reason, and Fayel sends a specific member of chofa Yelle.
- 14:22Speaker 1: It's like a whole D and D rating party is
- 14:24Speaker 1: going to do some reconnaissance in kyrian look.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Up Cianid and see if we can figure out what
- 14:32Speaker 2: is going on with her.
- 14:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, Barber says he wants to go to the
- 14:36Speaker 1: school that Rand established. I bet he has so many
- 14:39Speaker 1: eyes and ears at that school or at the baker's
- 14:42Speaker 1: shop right next door to the school. Obviously, because Subtlety.
- 14:45Speaker 2: Don't have a lot with Cianid's motivations. She just seems
- 14:49Speaker 2: to like doing adventury stuff. She's a green. She likes
- 14:52Speaker 2: to beyond adventures.
- 14:55Speaker 1: She's got two warders and the love of travel or whatever.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It's good to go.
- 15:00Speaker 2: She always just seems to be like one of those
- 15:02Speaker 2: I said. I was like, yeah, let's go, I'm fighting
- 15:04Speaker 2: the last Battle's sweet? All right? You know, Baron, you're
- 15:07Speaker 2: a leader, Okay, follow you right there.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I love to see it.
- 15:10Speaker 2: She's one of the good ones.
- 15:12Speaker 1: More gaze wonders about Ball were potentially betraying her to
- 15:15Speaker 1: paren and thinking about how she should have, you know,
- 15:17Speaker 1: asked the price of his silence, and like we know
- 15:19Speaker 1: that Ball were just very quietly and unobtrusively never mentioned
- 15:23Speaker 1: it once because he has a weird code of honor
- 15:27Speaker 1: as well as being fine putting all of his skills
- 15:29Speaker 1: to use for the White Cloaks for decades.
- 15:31Speaker 2: I think it's this idea of like, my network didn't
- 15:34Speaker 2: tell me that that's personal knowledge. I keep my secrets.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Hmm, Okay, that could be the line he's drawing. He's like,
- 15:40Speaker 1: if I got it through a spy, it's fair game.
- 15:42Speaker 1: But if I learned it in personal confidence, then there's
- 15:44Speaker 1: a different code, right, I could buy that. I could
- 15:47Speaker 1: see that being the weird brain pretzel he goes through.
- 15:50Speaker 2: That's how I've always split that in my head, that like,
- 15:52Speaker 2: why doesn't he say anything? And it's like, oh, because
- 15:54Speaker 2: like he was basically part of their group and part
- 15:57Speaker 2: of their you know, yeah, hates the Cloak. He hates
- 16:00Speaker 2: what the like Cloaks did to them. He's gonna, you know,
- 16:03Speaker 2: make sure their secrets are kept. Enemy of my enemy
- 16:05Speaker 2: type situation, right, and he.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Had their trust and confidence. Plus he knows that like
- 16:11Speaker 1: she abdicated like that became knowledge to the group eventually, right,
- 16:15Speaker 1: like the right, she's valueless and they he helped her escape,
- 16:19Speaker 1: so it would be like a serious breach of trust
- 16:22Speaker 1: to then betray her. So but it makes sense that
- 16:24Speaker 1: she suspects him because he's a white cloak secretary from
- 16:26Speaker 1: where she's sitting, right.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Who's wormed his way into Paren's thing and is somehow
- 16:32Speaker 2: not saying anything, right, like.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's sweet that Balwer never once mentions
- 16:37Speaker 1: it to her either or not sweet, but like it's
- 16:39Speaker 1: so interesting, an interesting insight into what his honor code is.
- 16:44Speaker 1: He won't put her worries at ease, that's not his job.
- 16:47Speaker 1: He'll just keep her secrets.
- 16:49Speaker 2: It is it also possible that Robert Jordan forgot they
- 16:51Speaker 2: knew each other and put them in the same room,
- 16:53Speaker 2: and then Sanderson had to come back and be like, so, yeah,
- 16:58Speaker 2: thanks for not mentioning.
- 16:58Speaker 1: That I can't have because no. The thing that's weird
- 17:02Speaker 1: that Sanderson dropped was that Baalwar should have known Galad's
- 17:05Speaker 1: personal sigil. That's the detail that Sanderson messed up.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Well, it's just the sigil of the Lord Captain commander though,
- 17:13Speaker 2: Like and that's just a generic like the presidential seal, right,
- 17:17Speaker 2: like it's the same for every president.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Yeah. But later they get a letter from Galad and
- 17:22Speaker 1: it's signed with his personal the impressed with the seal
- 17:26Speaker 1: on the wax whatever. It's just I remember there's a
- 17:29Speaker 1: scene later where Ball was like, well, I've never seen
- 17:31Speaker 1: this one, and I'm like, that bullshit. You've absolutely seen
- 17:34Speaker 1: Galad's personal sigil before, because he was He's a white clok.
- 17:39Speaker 1: He was a white cloak, he was on the rules,
- 17:41Speaker 1: he was on a hostage list. Niall was threatening more
- 17:43Speaker 1: Gaze with what could happen to Goalad, Like you absolutely
- 17:47Speaker 1: know his personal iconography, but Sanderson forgot about that. Anyway,
- 17:53Speaker 1: mar Gaze thinks about not going to Elaine and and
- 17:56Speaker 1: or that's risky, and then she looks at talent for
- 18:00Speaker 1: and thinks about how cute he is, and then paren
- 18:02Speaker 1: just completely poop storms all over that parade in the
- 18:07Speaker 1: most awkward and cringy way possible.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Oh that, like, it's about time you two should be married.
- 18:12Speaker 2: It's like only Lenny can do that.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like let's put this silliness behind us by
- 18:16Speaker 1: ordering you to get married. And it's like, again, how
- 18:18Speaker 1: are you not a leader, sir if you think you
- 18:20Speaker 1: have the right to tell two of your inferiors to
- 18:22Speaker 1: just get shocked already, come on, But yeah, only Lenny
- 18:26Speaker 1: can do that. Only Lenny's allowed to say that and
- 18:28Speaker 1: not be a complete putts. And honestly, I don't even
- 18:30Speaker 1: think she should say it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: I feel like that's a moment where Paren is trying
- 18:34Speaker 2: to ape his elders instead of just being me exactly,
- 18:37Speaker 2: He's trying to be and like he's trying to be
- 18:40Speaker 2: in command, and so he's like, well, I've seen my
- 18:41Speaker 2: elders make this say these two young people need to
- 18:44Speaker 2: get married, and I see these two people mooning. Maybe
- 18:46Speaker 2: I should be the one to say they should get married, which, again,
- 18:50Speaker 2: is so ridiculous because he just gave up all his power,
- 18:52Speaker 2: like the fact that he just gave up his power
- 18:53Speaker 2: and he's trying to literally marry people like.
- 18:57Speaker 1: What, which is just ah, yeah, it's so ridiculous, And
- 19:00Speaker 1: I don't.
- 19:01Speaker 2: It's just parents never quite this ubtuse. He's slow thinking,
- 19:05Speaker 2: but he rarely thinks and contradictions, Yeah.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Yeah, it's he's doing his best Lenny impression without understanding
- 19:14Speaker 1: what makes Lenny work.
- 19:16Speaker 2: It if some more Gates choose him out rightfully.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Yeah, which unfortunately means sort of stomping on Talon for
- 19:24Speaker 1: his hopes and dreams temporarily. And she regrets that, but
- 19:27Speaker 1: she does it anyway.
- 19:29Speaker 2: She's like, I will marry you when you ask nicely,
- 19:31Speaker 2: at the right time, not right now.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And she's going to tell him that just as soon
- 19:35Speaker 1: as she you know, eavesdrops a little bit. Yeah.
- 19:37Speaker 2: No, And as much as we do criticize Sanderson, he
- 19:40Speaker 2: did finish the books and in a satisfying way. Right.
- 19:43Speaker 2: There's weak points to point out, but like.
- 19:45Speaker 1: No, we will mercilessly point out the weak points because
- 19:48Speaker 1: we will also be unabashedly praising the high points loud.
- 19:52Speaker 1: We get equal amplitude of both directions.
- 19:56Speaker 2: A little bit about the guy shine and how they're
- 19:58Speaker 2: adapting to being free and like pretty normal stuff. I
- 20:02Speaker 2: don't know, we know how guys shine work.
- 20:04Speaker 1: It's just the whole looking through familiar things through unfamiliar eyes. Yeah,
- 20:10Speaker 1: it's just you know, Sanderson playing with I get to
- 20:12Speaker 1: write familiar stuff through eyes that we don't usually look
- 20:15Speaker 1: through and yeah, Morgaze is weirdly clueless about how I
- 20:21Speaker 1: el work, given she spent such an intense amount of
- 20:24Speaker 1: time with them. But whatever, these are not shidoh, which
- 20:26Speaker 1: is different.
- 20:29Speaker 2: There are eleven chapters with Morgez's POV, four of which
- 20:33Speaker 2: are in this book.
- 20:34Speaker 1: Yeah, we don't get to see out of her eyes
- 20:36Speaker 1: much but sometimes and yeah, she's sort of thinking about
- 20:40Speaker 1: stuff and how she should apologize to talin' wore when
- 20:43Speaker 1: her attention gets caught by maidens racing into the camp
- 20:48Speaker 1: to tell Paren not about a blight village this time.
- 20:51Speaker 1: This time it is about the White Cloaks.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Yes, it was like a fake out in the last chapter.
- 20:57Speaker 2: It was like, is the white looks no, basically light,
- 21:00Speaker 2: We're going to burn that. Now it's the white cloaks.
- 21:02Speaker 2: But yeah, so that's the what. And the white Cloaks
- 21:04Speaker 2: have been seeking them out right because they found their
- 21:06Speaker 2: scouts and heard where they'd be coming from. And so
- 21:09Speaker 2: the white Cloaks have been marching backwards to encounter Paren
- 21:14Speaker 2: and so surprise, surprise, and here we are.
- 21:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and I believe you mentioned a long time ago
- 21:19Speaker 1: that this is one of the last things that Sulan
- 21:21Speaker 1: does on the page is bring news of the White
- 21:24Speaker 1: Cloaks to Paren. Like, she basically drops off the face
- 21:26Speaker 1: of the earth. And I believe you said this is
- 21:28Speaker 1: her last really notable instance. I'm hoping I'm wrong about that.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Let me see, she's in a few she's in a
- 21:39Speaker 2: few more chapters here at the end. Okay, cool, but
- 21:42Speaker 2: she's not done yet, And it's possible I don't see her.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I don't see her in Memory of Light. But it's
- 21:47Speaker 2: possible that Encyclopedia Watt hasn't necessarily cataloged all of the
- 21:52Speaker 2: final book.
- 21:52Speaker 1: So never mind.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I think she's in the last battle. I think she's
- 21:56Speaker 2: she I couldn't.
- 21:58Speaker 1: I remember there being just a discussion of like, she
- 22:00Speaker 1: kind of falls off the face of the earth and
- 22:02Speaker 1: it's a bummer. But apparently I'm over exaggerating how complete
- 22:06Speaker 1: that was.
- 22:07Speaker 2: She arrives back to observe Paren create Hollinar. She's part
- 22:11Speaker 2: of the parent's procession when they meet with Elaine in Camelin,
- 22:15Speaker 2: and then that's really the last we see of her.
- 22:16Speaker 1: So this is one of the last things that she
- 22:18Speaker 1: does that's actually interesting whatsoever. And it's not really that interesting.
- 22:22Speaker 2: She's just a messenger yeah, she confirms that Ran vowed
- 22:25Speaker 2: Raven and and Or, causing more geyst or Can to
- 22:27Speaker 2: drop her tray and shock. Right, so oh that's important.
- 22:30Speaker 2: That's actually helpful. And she's like there when the bubble
- 22:33Speaker 2: of evil where the weapons come to life.
- 22:35Speaker 1: Right, yeah, I remember her in that fight.
- 22:38Speaker 2: So she's okay, cool.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Never I'm panicky prematurely still got more soone.
- 22:42Speaker 2: To get through. We got more Solon, but yeah, she's
- 22:45Speaker 2: not really a force. She doesn't really say a lot
- 22:48Speaker 2: in any of those things. She's just sort of there.
- 22:51Speaker 1: I think I really wanted to see more Sulan, Like
- 22:54Speaker 1: for some reason, she's one of those really small characters
- 22:56Speaker 1: that I'm particularly hurt by not getting more of. Like
- 22:59Speaker 1: there's lots that I'm like, yeah, we should have had
- 23:00Speaker 1: more of them, but Sulea, and she was so intensely
- 23:03Speaker 1: present during the Fires of Heaven and then she just
- 23:06Speaker 1: drops off the face of the earth.
- 23:08Speaker 2: You wanted her to get the Talon bar treatment exactly.
- 23:11Speaker 1: She's just of all the ieal baddies, she's one of
- 23:14Speaker 1: the baddest I mean baddies in the good way, not
- 23:16Speaker 1: in the evil way. Yeah, face of the Maidens, and
- 23:19Speaker 1: it's just Oh well anyway, Yeah, it.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Seems weird that she wasn't more of a force leading
- 23:25Speaker 2: the Maidens in the last battle, right exactly. Yeah, because
- 23:28Speaker 2: you had the wise Ones fighting with the one power.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I don't feel like we saw a lot of the Maidens.
- 23:33Speaker 1: I think they went on or guarding a lot of
- 23:35Speaker 1: different people, like wise Ones, yes, sister wives of Wise Ones.
- 23:40Speaker 2: When weren't they like what were they guarding Rand at
- 23:43Speaker 2: the shale goal? Because they carry his.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Honor, right exactly. I think they were really just doing
- 23:47Speaker 1: honor guard stuff. I don't think they were out on
- 23:49Speaker 1: the front lines because you know, they're the Maidens, they're
- 23:53Speaker 1: the elitist of the elite. So yeah, that's the end
- 23:56Speaker 1: of what I have for the chapter.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yep, same nice chapter. Hey, we get a little bit
- 24:13Speaker 2: of a land break in between the parent stuff. So
- 24:17Speaker 2: just a slight you know, a brush of breeze of
- 24:20Speaker 2: fresh air coming in as you are saturated in the light,
- 24:23Speaker 2: just that hint of before you go back to smelling.
- 24:27Speaker 2: You know, the blight lighter than a feather. And we
- 24:31Speaker 2: have the hair and marked sword. Because it's land, the
- 24:34Speaker 2: air felt calmer at night, though the thunder still worn land.
- 24:37Speaker 2: That not all was well in his weeks traveling with
- 24:40Speaker 2: buelin that storm above seemed to have grown darker. After
- 24:44Speaker 2: riding southward, they continued on to the east. They were
- 24:48Speaker 2: somewhere near the border between Candor and Saldaea, on the
- 24:52Speaker 2: plain of Lances, towering weathered hills, steep sided like fortresses
- 24:58Speaker 2: rows around them. Perhaps they'd missed the border. There often
- 25:03Speaker 2: was no marker on these back roads, and the mountains
- 25:06Speaker 2: cared not which nation tried to claim them. Master andre
- 25:11Speaker 2: Bulen said from behind, Land had purchased a horse for
- 25:14Speaker 2: him to ride, a dusty white mare. He still let
- 25:17Speaker 2: his pack horse Scouter Bulun caught up to him. Land
- 25:20Speaker 2: insisted on being called andre One follower was bad enough.
- 25:25Speaker 2: If nobody knew who he was, they couldn't ask to
- 25:28Speaker 2: come with him. He had Buln to thank, inadvertently for
- 25:31Speaker 2: the warning of what Ninive had done. For that, he
- 25:34Speaker 2: owed a man of debt. Bulun did like to talk, though,
- 25:38Speaker 2: Master andre Bulen continued, If I may suggest we could
- 25:42Speaker 2: turn south at the burnt cross roads. Yes, I know
- 25:45Speaker 2: away point in in that direction that serves the very
- 25:48Speaker 2: best quail. We could turn eastward again on the road
- 25:51Speaker 2: to south Mettler a much easier path. My cousin has
- 25:55Speaker 2: a farm along that road, cousin on my mother's side,
- 25:58Speaker 2: Master Andre, and we could we continue this way, but
- 26:02Speaker 2: south met there's a much better roadway and therefore much
- 26:07Speaker 2: better traveled too. Bulin Bulin's side, but fell silent. Hadori
- 26:12Speaker 2: looked good around his head, and he had proven surprisingly
- 26:15Speaker 2: capable with the sword, as talented a student as Land
- 26:18Speaker 2: had seen in a while.
- 26:20Speaker 1: So he's almost as good as Rand with the sword.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Right, is that what I'm here?
- 26:27Speaker 1: I'm going to contender.
- 26:29Speaker 2: There's a certain amount I think someone said, like, isn't
- 26:33Speaker 2: it odd that all of these butchers and bakers suddenly
- 26:36Speaker 2: find themselves with the talent for swords and all these
- 26:38Speaker 2: old soldiers, Like yeah, I feel like there was a
- 26:42Speaker 2: certain amount of like the pattern is pulling on people
- 26:45Speaker 2: and making them ready in this moment to fight the
- 26:49Speaker 2: last battle.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I'd agree with that. I mean, really, in many ways,
- 26:52Speaker 1: Bulin was kind of tapped by the pattern early on
- 26:54Speaker 1: because he did interact with Land briefly in New Spring, Right,
- 26:57Speaker 1: he was always destined to be with Land's final charge
- 27:01Speaker 1: until last, until near the very end of the battle.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Like that was kind of always his destiny ever since
- 27:06Speaker 1: that first faithful moment twenty years ago.
- 27:08Speaker 2: Mm hmm. And of course this is Land's ridiculous desire
- 27:12Speaker 2: to hide from his destiny, which is leading a bunch
- 27:15Speaker 2: of troops in the last battle who are going to
- 27:18Speaker 2: sport the king, right.
- 27:19Speaker 1: I mean, it's slightly cuter than when Paren does it,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but it's still annoying.
- 27:25Speaker 2: It's a little annoying. It's a little cuter because he
- 27:28Speaker 2: gives in. Yeah, and he doesn't like bitch about.
- 27:31Speaker 1: It forever and ever and ever, and he's not regressing.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Yeah, he's not regressing.
- 27:35Speaker 1: This is how he has been for twenty years. He
- 27:37Speaker 1: has been pulling this line. This is exactly who he's
- 27:40Speaker 1: been the whole books.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And by the time he gets twenty thousand troops, he's like, yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 2: I got an army, right, Like, deal with it where
- 27:46Speaker 2: we're attacking, right, Like that's the parent. On the other hand,
- 27:50Speaker 2: is trying to send his troops away.
- 27:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Land gives in and admits what's happening at like hundreds,
- 27:55Speaker 1: He does not need to get to twenty thousand and
- 27:57Speaker 1: still be like who No, But for now he's still
- 28:03Speaker 1: in denial, and it is very much an echo of
- 28:05Speaker 1: parents issues. You're like, wow, sometimes I guess this is
- 28:09Speaker 1: just how people are. This is just a thing people do.
- 28:12Speaker 2: And if that twenty thousand number is off, forgive me.
- 28:15Speaker 2: I don't think I confirm that. We keep quoting it.
- 28:17Speaker 2: It's close enough.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It's an army whatever, right.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Whatever number they decided to make up exactly.
- 28:24Speaker 1: So, Yeah, they go along the road and they see
- 28:28Speaker 1: a little in a little tiny town, and then there's
- 28:31Speaker 1: some men and they start stalking them, and then it
- 28:33Speaker 1: turns into a really funny repartee.
- 28:36Speaker 2: Right, we're not following you, you're following us.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I command you not to follow me. Well, we're technically
- 28:42Speaker 1: in front of you. So also, you're not a king.
- 28:44Speaker 1: I would obey a king, but I don't see any
- 28:46Speaker 1: kings here. Like, it's really funny. They're all very much Yeah, yeah,
- 28:51Speaker 1: these are clever men playing with land, being like no,
- 28:54Speaker 1: silly boy, you don't get to do this on your own.
- 28:56Speaker 1: The Land's like, but we're riding to death and they're like, bro,
- 29:00Speaker 1: death is lighter than a feather, don't you know that
- 29:02Speaker 1: that makes the trip easier? Like, what are you talking about?
- 29:05Speaker 1: Why are you trying to save us from death? That
- 29:07Speaker 1: is cool.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Come on, man, it's your catchphrase. Bro. The best way
- 29:13Speaker 2: I love it it is it's a well done troll
- 29:16Speaker 2: because it's like you, you either take authority, in which
- 29:19Speaker 2: case we're following our king, or you don't take authority,
- 29:21Speaker 2: in which case you can't tell us what to do.
- 29:23Speaker 1: You don't own the roads, dude, And unless you were
- 29:26Speaker 1: the king, I mean obviously then you would own the roads.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Unless you're the king. Any for the king, sure, yeah,
- 29:30Speaker 2: I mean obviously, but then then we're riding with our
- 29:32Speaker 2: king to battle, so you can't stop us either way.
- 29:35Speaker 2: So I mean, it's just it's a really it's a clever,
- 29:38Speaker 2: fun romp. It's a fun moment with Land where the
- 29:44Speaker 2: people around him frustrate his self destructive desires, which is
- 29:48Speaker 2: something that, like for me, is really important in fantasy books.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Yes that like, oh what was the series I used
- 29:57Speaker 2: to love? The Last Harold Mage was a trilogy by
- 30:03Speaker 2: Mercedes Lackey and both some of my first LGBT media, right,
- 30:10Speaker 2: because the main character is gay and then just this
- 30:14Speaker 2: self this being very self destructive, right, and being saved
- 30:19Speaker 2: and then like nurse back to health and care for
- 30:21Speaker 2: by the people around them, like I think there's just
- 30:23Speaker 2: really important themes in that book that I also see
- 30:26Speaker 2: a little bit here.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Yeah, and you like to see it. You like to
- 30:30Speaker 1: see a flawed hero actually be meaningfully helped by the
- 30:33Speaker 1: people around them. That is a thing that you want
- 30:36Speaker 1: to see positively modeled in your fantasy media. It is
- 30:39Speaker 1: good for your brain to see that as an option,
- 30:42Speaker 1: like a.
- 30:42Speaker 2: People a sacrifice of being appreciated.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Yeah, and like, yeah, Landa is still being annoying at
- 30:48Speaker 1: this point, but we know what it's building to, So
- 30:50Speaker 1: it's fun to see how his followers also know what
- 30:52Speaker 1: it's building to and are just going to indulge his
- 30:55Speaker 1: little fantasy until he gets over himself.
- 30:58Speaker 2: The two had become so he gets these two Malciary
- 31:02Speaker 2: and one of the guys I don't even think is Malciarry.
- 31:05Speaker 1: He's just on Redd and with because the Malcyri are
- 31:08Speaker 1: all over the Borderlanders, right, so any given Borderlander might
- 31:10Speaker 1: know a Malchyry and be like, yeah, I'll sign on.
- 31:13Speaker 1: That's a good gofund me, that's a good kickstarter.
- 31:15Speaker 2: I want to fight in the last battle, right, Like,
- 31:17Speaker 2: and because what's interesting, right, all the armies have traveled
- 31:20Speaker 2: south to meet with Rand, so who are all these
- 31:23Speaker 2: warriors who are left behind joining up with him? Right,
- 31:26Speaker 2: These are the people who are put down their sword
- 31:29Speaker 2: and became farmers, who were merchants, who are picking the
- 31:32Speaker 2: sword back up again. You know this, This one guy
- 31:35Speaker 2: is over seventy, right, he's retired like this. It's a
- 31:38Speaker 2: very like, not normal group of warriors he's picking up
- 31:43Speaker 2: just sort of the edges of the fact that, you know,
- 31:46Speaker 2: everyone in the Borderlanders knows how to fight, very ideal
- 31:50Speaker 2: in that way.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and they all want to spit inside Blander's eye
- 31:54Speaker 1: very ieal right, they all want to do that, And
- 31:55Speaker 1: so of course they all want to join up with
- 31:58Speaker 1: the mythic king who's willing to take the crusty old
- 32:02Speaker 1: hard core of the Borderlands and lead them in a singular,
- 32:08Speaker 1: impressive strike. Like of course, men of all nations want
- 32:11Speaker 1: to get on board with following literal king Arthur in
- 32:14Speaker 1: the flesh, like who wouldn't, And yeah, Land is just like,
- 32:18Speaker 1: but I don't want to come on, everyone else wants
- 32:21Speaker 1: you to.
- 32:21Speaker 2: And let's be honest, it's a good bet because Rand
- 32:24Speaker 2: fucking saves the day, right, like it's Land is saved
- 32:28Speaker 2: by Rand in that moment, and so those people do
- 32:32Speaker 2: ride one of the most successful raids to lead off
- 32:35Speaker 2: the Lost Battle, right, They they fight and they I mean,
- 32:38Speaker 2: they end up fighting for a very very long time
- 32:41Speaker 2: and a lot of them do die, but it's just
- 32:43Speaker 2: incredibly successful as one of the first battles of the
- 32:47Speaker 2: Lost Battle.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and I ne you've played a really large role
- 32:51Speaker 1: in making that happen. Because Land finally allowed himself to
- 32:54Speaker 1: get married and fall in love and all that stuff.
- 32:57Speaker 1: He ends up with the dragon reborn and pulling on
- 32:59Speaker 1: your left at the last possible minute.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Nice. Yeah, yeah, Sanderson did it before ah endgame for sure,
- 33:10Speaker 2: for sure.
- 33:10Speaker 1: And I only know about the endgame thing because so
- 33:12Speaker 1: many people have referenced that I have not actually watched endgame.
- 33:15Speaker 1: This is entirely cultural osmosis I have.
- 33:18Speaker 2: I enjoyed the moment. I thought it was very well done.
- 33:21Speaker 1: You are part of the osmosis that has gotten it
- 33:23Speaker 1: into my brain. So POV switch over to a leader
- 33:29Speaker 1: who actually admits he is a leader.
- 33:31Speaker 2: To Galad, it feels like there's just this like slot machine,
- 33:36Speaker 2: a leader, Leader, Leader. Here's how to be a leader,
- 33:38Speaker 2: Here's how not to be a leader. Here's how to
- 33:40Speaker 2: be a leader. You know.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and this Galad pov sort of flickers in and
- 33:45Speaker 1: out of Parents POV for the rest of the chapter.
- 33:48Speaker 1: It's like, really liked this so hard. We could just
- 33:52Speaker 1: talk about the one and then talk about the other,
- 33:54Speaker 1: because flipping back and forth is it's silly, it's too short.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like he's trying to build tension by
- 34:00Speaker 2: flipping back and forth, like showing these things going on
- 34:03Speaker 2: at the same time, but there's just too many cuts
- 34:05Speaker 2: and too little going on for that to really be significant.
- 34:08Speaker 2: It feels like they're cutting them off like midway through
- 34:10Speaker 2: each sentence to flip back basically.
- 34:13Speaker 1: So I say, we just talk about the Galad scene
- 34:15Speaker 1: and then go back and talk about the paths. Okay,
- 34:17Speaker 1: So yeah, Goalada is having breakfast. They're both having breakfast again.
- 34:20Speaker 1: We're very time sinked here, and by our comes in
- 34:25Speaker 1: and says, I have even more information. I have even
- 34:27Speaker 1: more to unveil this Pandora's Box goes farther and then
- 34:30Speaker 1: we get all the way back to Parents' original sin,
- 34:34Speaker 1: which is not the two rivers, it's not the golden eyes.
- 34:37Speaker 1: It's those two random white cloaks that he wolf raged
- 34:40Speaker 1: on back in book one, and that is going to
- 34:43Speaker 1: be the core of white Gallad thinks that he has
- 34:46Speaker 1: a right to prosecute pair and for murder and is
- 34:49Speaker 1: going to take all that time for a trial. It's
- 34:51Speaker 1: all about these two random white cloak dudes that died
- 34:53Speaker 1: before we ever knew their names. In Book freaking one,
- 34:57Speaker 1: it's parents original trauma after leaving the two rivers as
- 35:01Speaker 1: I from all the other traumas he suffered literally that
- 35:03Speaker 1: same day. It's all looping back around. Goalt is finally
- 35:07Speaker 1: getting looped into that over breakfast.
- 35:10Speaker 2: No mention of the what was it tends of white cloaks,
- 35:15Speaker 2: Him and gall chopped to pieces in the because there's
- 35:18Speaker 2: no witnesses.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I saw them, but she's not going to volunteer the information.
- 35:24Speaker 1: And Land and Moraine, but neither of them are likely
- 35:26Speaker 1: to come to bear on the situation.
- 35:28Speaker 2: That was the thing that made in the first place.
- 35:32Speaker 2: She's like, oh this is this man can stand up.
- 35:40Speaker 2: Oh those were the good days.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah. Gold keeps pushing back with you sound
- 35:46Speaker 1: like a questioner, and then Buyer keeps being like, but
- 35:48Speaker 1: this is different. I have real receipts, and Galt is
- 35:52Speaker 1: unfortunately willing to listen. I guess it's good to listen
- 35:57Speaker 1: to all the facts, but he is easily swayed by
- 35:59Speaker 1: buy ours and reportation.
- 36:00Speaker 2: And let's not forget that buyer has you know, I
- 36:04Speaker 2: believe this is totally canon Byar has been compelled by
- 36:06Speaker 2: Grendall to hate paren and try to assassinate him.
- 36:10Speaker 1: And when did that happen? Did weh cannon? That was
- 36:14Speaker 1: like back in book two or so?
- 36:15Speaker 2: Or is yeah, it's super early on. I might be
- 36:18Speaker 2: book four, but it's at some point I think after
- 36:21Speaker 2: the White Cloaks, or like, I think it's book four
- 36:23Speaker 2: because after they're busted up in the Two Rivers they
- 36:25Speaker 2: have to travel cross country. Or maybe it's no, maybe
- 36:28Speaker 2: you're right book two, it's after the sean Chan battle.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Yeah. I thought that the high canon was that it
- 36:34Speaker 1: happened in the aftermath of Falm.
- 36:37Speaker 2: That's true. Yes, in the aftermath of Palm. He has
- 36:40Speaker 2: to travel back to Lamadicia to meet with White Cloaks,
- 36:44Speaker 2: and that path takes them right through where Grendal is.
- 36:47Speaker 2: And so the assumption is he stumbled onto her fortress
- 36:51Speaker 2: or was close enough that he was brought within her influence,
- 36:55Speaker 2: and at that point was compelled to be her little
- 36:57Speaker 2: and then at some point we also see her mention
- 37:00Speaker 2: her little final like hidden dagger. I can't remember the
- 37:02Speaker 2: phrasing right now, because at some point she talks about
- 37:04Speaker 2: a trap that's hidden in plain sight.
- 37:07Speaker 1: Yeah, her last secret weapon or.
- 37:09Speaker 2: Something like that, her last secret weapon. And then that's
- 37:12Speaker 2: you know, that's why Bier tries just to basically assassinate
- 37:14Speaker 2: parn Is that he's been compelled.
- 37:16Speaker 1: Right, and that's why Bornhold has to kill him, is
- 37:18Speaker 1: because buy Our is doing any legal extra judicial you know, murder,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and that's not cool. Yeah, so yeah, but also you know,
- 37:26Speaker 1: Gold is listening to facts and Buyer does have quite
- 37:30Speaker 1: the compelling tale that he relates here. Well, Gollod's breakfast
- 37:34Speaker 1: Porridge goes cold about how the Two Rivers went down,
- 37:37Speaker 1: which again I feel like Gold could be applying a
- 37:39Speaker 1: lot more critical thinking to this story, because buy Ours
- 37:42Speaker 1: take on what happened at the Two Rivers. It makes
- 37:44Speaker 1: no sense paren brought dark friends and shadows Baond to
- 37:48Speaker 1: the Two Rivers, which is full of dark friends, in
- 37:50Speaker 1: order to terrorize the two Rivers into following him as
- 37:54Speaker 1: dark friends. And that's how you know that he's a
- 37:56Speaker 1: dark friend. It's just very circular logic, and I'm in
- 38:00Speaker 1: that Galad has no follow up questions.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Especially after his big speech about how like sometimes you
- 38:08Speaker 2: mistake people who disagree with us for dark friends, and
- 38:11Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, like parent, right, like why are you
- 38:14Speaker 2: taking Like this guy just called everybody in the circle
- 38:17Speaker 2: of everything that happened dark friends, and maybe some of
- 38:20Speaker 2: them were maybe some of them were just disagreeing with him. Yeah,
- 38:24Speaker 2: maybe some of them were just influenced by Oh, I
- 38:26Speaker 2: don't know, Vane, like the White Cloaks, Yeah exactly, or
- 38:32Speaker 2: yeah it's okay, No, it's frustrating that god, it's you
- 38:38Speaker 2: never like it. One. Stupidity is what pushes the plot forward,
- 38:41Speaker 2: and it's like, just why are you buying this story? Yeah,
- 38:44Speaker 2: be critical, be just a little critical.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I want follow up questions rather than remembering that one
- 38:49Speaker 1: time that a boy from the Two Rivers kicked your
- 38:51Speaker 1: ass with a stick, right, Like, it's cute that there's
- 38:54Speaker 1: a little callback to Matt and the staff fight, but
- 38:57Speaker 1: a follow up question on any of Bayer's claims would
- 39:00Speaker 1: have been more useful for plot. So, yeah, he's just
- 39:03Speaker 1: making his accusations, Oh he killed these two white cloaks,
- 39:06Speaker 1: he was at Falma, he killed Bornhald's father, just you know,
- 39:09Speaker 1: charge after charge after charge, all.
- 39:11Speaker 2: The encounters that we've seen, right, like over and over
- 39:14Speaker 2: and over again, and we're going to go over these
- 39:16Speaker 2: so many times during the trial, and like, I feel
- 39:18Speaker 2: like we go over these events tons in this book.
- 39:21Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and then galad says, oh okay, cool, So
- 39:26Speaker 1: what are we going to do about that? And Bayer
- 39:29Speaker 1: essentially says, we're gonna we're gonna buy our way into Gualadon.
- 39:32Speaker 1: We're going to free the Guila don and Queen from
- 39:34Speaker 1: her field, hes at this horrible shadow spawn, and then
- 39:37Speaker 1: it'll be a new a Medicia and we'll be able
- 39:39Speaker 1: to make Galadon great again and it's gonna be awesome.
- 39:44Speaker 1: And God is again very uncritically intrigued by this prospect.
- 39:50Speaker 2: And just like that's not how the politics are actually working.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Like she's not enslaved him at all, she's supporting him allheartedly.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Like there's all these these issues with his point, right.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Because like and then he does the back and forth
- 40:02Speaker 1: of like, well, they're just farmers, we can get rid
- 40:04Speaker 1: of them so easily. Also, farmers are super dangerous and
- 40:07Speaker 1: Golad for once does have a critical thought and says,
- 40:10Speaker 1: you can't have it both ways. Dude, are they are
- 40:11Speaker 1: they dangerous or are they not dangerous? Like pick one?
- 40:15Speaker 1: But again this is not enough follow up a lot.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and the reality is that, like, yeah, they're dangerous
- 40:20Speaker 2: to the White Cloaks. The White Cloaks are a terrible
- 40:23Speaker 2: fighting force, absolutely atrocious. Yeah.
- 40:27Speaker 1: And then Galad says, well, if everything you told me
- 40:29Speaker 1: is true, I need to offer formal battle with Paranambaro, Like, dude,
- 40:34Speaker 1: please say that if again, slower to yourself, Like it's
- 40:38Speaker 1: ridiculous that you just take what you know is a biased,
- 40:42Speaker 1: bigoted zealot and you're just taking his word on it
- 40:45Speaker 1: and saying, well, I guess I'm gonna have to commit
- 40:47Speaker 1: our inferior fighting force to a suicide admission in order
- 40:51Speaker 1: to enact justice on your word alone. It's ridiculous. Bad leadership.
- 40:56Speaker 1: He embraces being a leader, but he's doing bad things
- 40:58Speaker 1: with that leadering annoying the correction.
- 41:02Speaker 2: The twenty thousand soldiers is a number of White Cloaks.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Parents' army is bigger, so more than.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Twenty thousand, Yeah, twenty thousand and growing rapidly meat. Oh yeah,
- 41:12Speaker 1: So back to Paren, I think, so is that it for? Yeah,
- 41:16Speaker 1: that's it for the gallad By. Our conversation got.
- 41:20Speaker 2: That there's one more paragraph right there at the end,
- 41:22Speaker 2: and it's just like, why is that paragraph even there?
- 41:24Speaker 2: It says nothing, It means nothing.
- 41:26Speaker 1: So now to recap Paren's breakfast conversation, he has his
- 41:30Speaker 1: whole running dialogue about the eating meat for breakfast thing,
- 41:33Speaker 1: which I think is hilarious because I'm a big fan
- 41:36Speaker 1: of eat breakfast for dinner and dinner for breakfast.
- 41:39Speaker 2: And protein's good for breakfast.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Lots of people eat meat for breakfast. The Fayel saying
- 41:45Speaker 1: it's strange to eat meat for breakfast. It's just a
- 41:48Speaker 1: weird classism thing. Don't do that. Don't judge people's breakfast choices.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Well, how many people eat bacon and eggs for breakfast?
- 41:54Speaker 2: That's basically what he's having is ham, which is basically
- 41:57Speaker 2: bacon and eggs.
- 41:58Speaker 1: I mean, in America, far too many people have bacon
- 42:00Speaker 1: an extra breakfast every day.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I think there's a little bit of a like a
- 42:04Speaker 2: meta commentary about like Fiel being I can't believe you
- 42:07Speaker 2: eat that, and it's like the most common American breakfast
- 42:09Speaker 2: that people eat all the time.
- 42:10Speaker 1: I think it's supposed to communicate something about how he
- 42:12Speaker 1: is embracing his wolfy nature and it's coming out more
- 42:16Speaker 1: as he does the wolf thing, he gets more wolf.
- 42:18Speaker 1: I think that's what it's supposed to be a commentary on.
- 42:20Speaker 1: But it also does feel like a weird sideways jab
- 42:23Speaker 1: at American breakfast culture.
- 42:27Speaker 2: But yeah, him just being like oh yeah, And again
- 42:30Speaker 2: this is sort of the reversion, Like I feel like
- 42:31Speaker 2: he accepted the fact that he ate meat and like
- 42:35Speaker 2: tonks of meat a long time ago. Like again, back
- 42:37Speaker 2: in book four, that was a thing where he was like,
- 42:39Speaker 2: oh yeah, I eat meat, and I'm like kind of
- 42:42Speaker 2: liking that more than eating porridge for breakfast.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yeah, but we got to reiterate it because Sanderson needs
- 42:47Speaker 1: to write that. And Gall comes in and him and
- 42:51Speaker 1: parents sit on the floor and talk about scouty stuff
- 42:55Speaker 1: to do with the white cloaks, because again, we're bringing
- 42:57Speaker 1: these two forces together, so we have to see the
- 43:00Speaker 1: docking procedure from both sides, and Gall is the messenger in.
- 43:03Speaker 2: This case, and he said he basically was scouting with Elias.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Elias used his wolf eyes to see the faces of
- 43:10Speaker 2: the captives, which included Basil Gill. So yes, they have
- 43:13Speaker 2: our people, and.
- 43:14Speaker 1: Also we recognized the carts and the equipment, like there's
- 43:17Speaker 1: no reason to think that this isn't what's happening. And
- 43:20Speaker 1: then we get a little bit of insight into how
- 43:22Speaker 1: Gall is still having issues with pain and Chiad. In
- 43:25Speaker 1: that really adorable funny taming of the Shrew antagonism sort
- 43:28Speaker 1: of thing, he says something about how it would be
- 43:31Speaker 1: better to have the dark One himself as Guy Shine
- 43:33Speaker 1: than those two. It's like, ah, they like you. They
- 43:37Speaker 1: mean to you because they like you. This is adorable,
- 43:39Speaker 1: nothing problematic, So I.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Unpack here, but a lot of telling, a lot of
- 43:43Speaker 2: telling in this chapter. He's talking about how they're mean
- 43:46Speaker 2: to him. We're not seeing them be mean to him,
- 43:48Speaker 2: you know. Yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 1: So then Gall brings in news that Balwer says that
- 43:51Speaker 1: it is the Lord Captain Commander who is in camp.
- 43:54Speaker 1: We don't have a personal Sigel yet, we just have
- 43:56Speaker 1: an official signal. And Paren gets all flashed by about
- 44:01Speaker 1: White Cloak higher ups because of that night two years ago,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and again telling us this is gonna keep looping back
- 44:08Speaker 1: into my path over and over again until I resolve it, like, Okay,
- 44:12Speaker 1: you just went to therapy for the first time and
- 44:13Speaker 1: you've learned that cycles repeat until you learn your lesson good.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Is there any difference between the Lord Captain Commander's banner
- 44:20Speaker 2: when it changes hands from person to person or is
- 44:23Speaker 2: it just the same Lord Captain's.
- 44:24Speaker 1: I think it's the same. I think it doesn't change.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Okay, this has no way to know, like this is
- 44:30Speaker 2: glawd from the fact that Lord got Commander's banner.
- 44:33Speaker 1: I believe that Gallad signs a letter later with his
- 44:36Speaker 1: personal sigil, but that is not incorporated into the sigil
- 44:40Speaker 1: of the office. I could be wrong about what he
- 44:43Speaker 1: signs with later, but I know that the sigil doesn't
- 44:45Speaker 1: change when the leadership changes. Like you said before, It's
- 44:48Speaker 1: like the seal for the President of the United States.
- 44:51Speaker 1: It doesn't get updates.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Got it.
- 44:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Gall says we can totally kick their asses. That
- 44:56Speaker 1: would be easy, and parents says, I'd rather not because
- 44:59Speaker 1: that's how he feels about conflict. And then he ends
- 45:04Speaker 1: the chapter with saying, well, I guess we'll try to
- 45:06Speaker 1: talk first, and then I'll punch them in the face
- 45:08Speaker 1: if I have to.
- 45:08Speaker 2: And he's like, ah, the pattern's just going to keep
- 45:12Speaker 2: looping them back around in front of me until I
- 45:13Speaker 2: deal with it. Right, It's like my problems are going
- 45:15Speaker 2: to keep popping back up until I deal with them.
- 45:17Speaker 1: Therapy one oh one, Congratulations, we're glad you've started the past.
- 45:23Speaker 2: So there's that little bit of like bit about the
- 45:24Speaker 2: pattern and like how he's sort of realizing that this
- 45:27Speaker 2: is the severeness and the pattern that's like forcing him
- 45:29Speaker 2: to deal with these things before he can go back
- 45:33Speaker 2: to Rand. And he's got this tugging in him and
- 45:36Speaker 2: makes him want to go back. So he's like, Okay,
- 45:38Speaker 2: I can't delay anymore. I've got fai yel. I have
- 45:40Speaker 2: to deal with these things so that I can get
- 45:42Speaker 2: me and all of my armies back to Rand and
- 45:46Speaker 2: the last battle.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yep, there it is.
- 45:49Speaker 2: We'll give the children a chance to return our people,
- 45:51Speaker 2: and if they don't, well then we'll see. We will
- 45:55Speaker 2: see in.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Exhaustive, excruciating, painstaking, granular detail, we'll see. And with that
- 46:02Speaker 1: in under an hour, we got through.
- 46:05Speaker 2: Two chapters in the under an hour. Ooh boy, there
- 46:09Speaker 2: was a lot of filler in those chapters, that's for sure.
- 46:11Speaker 1: If it's a show rather than tell chapter we have
- 46:14Speaker 1: a lot less to say. The spoilers thing is to
- 46:17Speaker 1: figure out what's happening. If we're just being told, there's
- 46:20Speaker 1: a lot less material.
- 46:22Speaker 2: For us to work with. Yeah, we need to see
- 46:24Speaker 2: things going on and like make connections on our own.
- 46:27Speaker 2: But when we're just told what's going on, it's like, yeah,
- 46:30Speaker 2: we can read it. You can read it. How's your
- 46:31Speaker 2: reading comprehension? Pretty good? Cool? And it's one of the reasons,
- 46:37Speaker 2: you know, I just I think that that Sanderson is
- 46:39Speaker 2: a nod as a grown up or well written author,
- 46:42Speaker 2: as someone like Robert Jordan, because there is that like
- 46:45Speaker 2: level of always kind of telling you what's happening and
- 46:49Speaker 2: not letting you figure it out for yourself. So there's
- 46:52Speaker 2: just that slightly less level of engagement that you need
- 46:55Speaker 2: to and journey that you need to go on. And
- 47:36Speaker 2: it's why I've been enjoying reading Dungeon Crawler Carl so much.
- 47:40Speaker 2: I was.
- 47:42Speaker 1: Like, tell us something positive about a thing you've been enjoying.
- 47:45Speaker 1: For the after show. The people deserve more content.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Okay, all right, since we're going for more content. And
- 47:51Speaker 2: I know I've been talking about this, but I feel
- 47:52Speaker 2: like I've been damning it with faint praise, because like,
- 47:54Speaker 2: I really don't think I gave it a chance when
- 47:57Speaker 2: I first dug into it, because I was like, oh no,
- 47:59Speaker 2: a video game leveling book is just not going to
- 48:03Speaker 2: be that good. And the first book, certainly, like is
- 48:07Speaker 2: kind of what I was expecting, with a lot of
- 48:09Speaker 2: you know, sort of funny dark humor built in, but
- 48:13Speaker 2: a lot of game mechanics and stuff like that, and
- 48:15Speaker 2: I was like, Okay, I'm enjoying this. But then as
- 48:18Speaker 2: it grew, I gotta say, the background characters and the
- 48:24Speaker 2: number of things that are happening between the characters, both
- 48:28Speaker 2: in the Dungeon and with the you know, not wanna
- 48:30Speaker 2: spoil it too much, but with the the group that
- 48:33Speaker 2: created the Dungeon and the politics between those, and the
- 48:37Speaker 2: way that a lot of other characters have their own
- 48:39Speaker 2: plot lines that are very much going on in the
- 48:41Speaker 2: background do remind me a lot of the way that
- 48:44Speaker 2: The Wheel of Time feels like a very rich real
- 48:47Speaker 2: world because you have all these plot lines going on,
- 48:49Speaker 2: and sometimes they don't tell you what the connections are,
- 48:52Speaker 2: but when you figure one of those out, it's a
- 48:54Speaker 2: very rewarding like, oh, that character's name is in their
- 48:59Speaker 2: Maria to a different this character with a different name,
- 49:03Speaker 2: and that's why there's this you know chain of hate
- 49:06Speaker 2: or you know, reason to dislike somebody, And yeah, I
- 49:09Speaker 2: just I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I think the
- 49:12Speaker 2: characters are really well written. I think the the twists
- 49:16Speaker 2: are pretty good. The battles are very bloody, and there's
- 49:19Speaker 2: some real you know, body horror, right Like this is
- 49:24Speaker 2: these are real people in video game situations, So there's
- 49:26Speaker 2: some real like people getting squished. But then like that's
- 49:30Speaker 2: you know, that's not just like a little mushroom that
- 49:32Speaker 2: get squished and goes away. That's that's a body. So
- 49:35Speaker 2: you have to be, you know, careful if you're a
- 49:37Speaker 2: little squeamish. I think about some of the the scenes
- 49:41Speaker 2: for sure. But he's sort of hit what I would
- 49:45Speaker 2: call a halfway point in the series. It might not
- 49:48Speaker 2: be the halfway point in the books, right, I think
- 49:49Speaker 2: he's only I don't know if this is true or not,
- 49:51Speaker 2: but he may. If it's a ten book series. He's
- 49:53Speaker 2: written seven, right, so he's got sort of three books
- 49:56Speaker 2: to finish it off. But at least in terms of
- 49:57Speaker 2: the number of floors in the dungeon, he's hit a
- 49:59Speaker 2: halfway point, and so there was a lot of sort
- 50:02Speaker 2: of in the early books, he was writing a lot
- 50:04Speaker 2: about what's going to happen on these first nine levels
- 50:07Speaker 2: out of the eighteen, and I think there's sort of
- 50:11Speaker 2: a fulfillment of a lot of promise. Right we've gotten
- 50:14Speaker 2: to level nine, which in a lot of ways, whether
- 50:17Speaker 2: you want to call it the halfway point or sort
- 50:18Speaker 2: of a significant stopping off point before whatever is going
- 50:23Speaker 2: to however he's going to finish it up, which you know,
- 50:25Speaker 2: at this point, could be he's he could go any
- 50:28Speaker 2: a lot of different ways. I don't know how he's
- 50:29Speaker 2: going to go, but at least at this point, I
- 50:31Speaker 2: feel like he's given us a lot of resolution on
- 50:35Speaker 2: a lot of the things that he you know, there's
- 50:37Speaker 2: still plenty of plot lines going forward, but like I
- 50:40Speaker 2: trust him to write a good conclusion to the whole
- 50:43Speaker 2: series based on what he's given us so far and
- 50:46Speaker 2: the fan base. The fandom looks fun, that looks positive.
- 50:50Speaker 2: People are still really sort of enjoying the silliness of it.
- 50:53Speaker 2: And there's something that's like there's a lot of very
- 50:57Speaker 2: cost playable characters, right, some very and so when you
- 51:00Speaker 2: have a lot of recognizable characters. It's very easy to
- 51:03Speaker 2: create these groups of people who look very similar and
- 51:05Speaker 2: obviously are like wearing a uniform. There's lovable characters and
- 51:10Speaker 2: stuff like that. You know, it's just it's wacky fun.
- 51:12Speaker 2: It's like it's obviously not taking itself too seriously, but
- 51:16Speaker 2: as it evolves and gets more complicated, it brushes on
- 51:20Speaker 2: more serious and more serious topics, and you're like, oh,
- 51:24Speaker 2: I was reading this for fun, and now I'm thinking
- 51:25Speaker 2: about like social political, you know, structures of various countries
- 51:32Speaker 2: and our world, and that's that's weird and I didn't
- 51:36Speaker 2: expect to be doing that based on this series at all.
- 51:39Speaker 1: Sneaky, sneaky, Yeah, it's it's.
- 51:41Speaker 2: It's well done.
- 51:43Speaker 1: Cool.
- 51:43Speaker 2: And then just like you know, some of the characters
- 51:45Speaker 2: like start off as what you think of my big
- 51:48Speaker 2: two dimensional characters, but you get to some of their
- 51:50Speaker 2: personal trauma, both going back before the end of the
- 51:52Speaker 2: world and after, and with the added benefit of like
- 51:55Speaker 2: anybody could die at any time, these are very real stakes.
- 51:58Speaker 2: And he kills off some you know, lovable characters pretty quickly.
- 52:04Speaker 2: There's some characters you think are going to be part
- 52:05Speaker 2: of it to the end, and you're like, oh no,
- 52:07Speaker 2: they're dead. Oh oh oh shit, that's the end of
- 52:11Speaker 2: that one.
- 52:11Speaker 1: Getting all Melanie rawn on our asset.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Wow.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad that's been enjoyable. That sounds really cool
- 52:21Speaker 1: and fun.
- 52:21Speaker 2: It's just yeah, I highly recommend it to anybody who's
- 52:25Speaker 2: looking for a fun book. I think if you liked
- 52:29Speaker 2: The Bob of Verse, I think, if you like any
- 52:31Speaker 2: Andy Weir stuff, I think that like, and if you're
- 52:35Speaker 2: okay with stuff being just a little more bloody. This
- 52:37Speaker 2: is sort of that same male first person perspective telling
- 52:42Speaker 2: a fun, not quite serious story about aliens and how
- 52:47Speaker 2: you deal with them.
- 52:48Speaker 1: I mean this is an evergreen genre.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, for sure, for sure, very cool.
- 52:56Speaker 1: I'm not reading anything of equal interest. I mean, I
- 52:59Speaker 1: just started a new book, so I'm not really like
- 53:01Speaker 1: invested in it yet. But it's called The Other Americans,
- 53:04Speaker 1: and the audiobook actually has six narrators for the six
- 53:08Speaker 1: different povs. I've only heard three of them so far
- 53:12Speaker 1: because I'm reading it like with my grandma. But yeah,
- 53:14Speaker 1: it's not an audio drama with sound effects and music.
- 53:17Speaker 1: It's more like Michael and Kate just switching back and forth,
- 53:20Speaker 1: except that there's a full cast of six people doing that,
- 53:25Speaker 1: so that's slightly different. But it's a fiction book about
- 53:30Speaker 1: people being immigrants in the United States and being othered
- 53:33Speaker 1: and stuff, so we'll see how that goes. It's you know,
- 53:37Speaker 1: I mean, I like it so far, but I'm two
- 53:39Speaker 1: chapters in so it's hard to say, you know, or
- 53:41Speaker 1: three chapters.
- 53:42Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 53:44Speaker 1: Yeah, currently re listening to An Immense World, which is
- 53:48Speaker 1: about animal senses, and I'm about to I think, restart
- 53:51Speaker 1: listening to How the South Won the Civil War, which
- 53:54Speaker 1: actually I think I read that, I didn't listen to it,
- 53:58Speaker 1: and my mom says that the book is really good.
- 54:01Speaker 1: It's actually the author narrating her own book and she's
- 54:04Speaker 1: good at it, So I think I might re listen
- 54:07Speaker 1: to that. But that's not fun that that's a book
- 54:10Speaker 1: that will make you very depressed and understand what the
- 54:13Speaker 1: future holds because past rhymes with the future.
- 54:17Speaker 2: No thanks, I'm going for sticking my head deep deep
- 54:21Speaker 2: into the sand for the times when I'm reading.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Yeah, let's see, I don't. I don't have much in
- 54:25Speaker 1: the escape. An Immense World is really good for escapism.
- 54:28Speaker 1: It's it's real, it's it's nonfiction. But it has nothing
- 54:33Speaker 1: to do with things that will make you depressed, except
- 54:35Speaker 1: for like I guess Wales having noise pollution of the
- 54:38Speaker 1: ocean is kind of bad.
- 54:41Speaker 2: Oh, And if you have any suggestions for dealing with
- 54:45Speaker 2: planter fasci itis, please send me suggestions. My left foot's
- 54:51Speaker 2: been hurting, but anything that particularly that worked. If you've
- 54:54Speaker 2: had that, I don't know you'll have to include this,
- 54:56Speaker 2: but yeah, anything that helps with it. It's it's not fun,
- 55:01Speaker 2: not fun. So I'm working on just icing and stretching,
- 55:04Speaker 2: and i'd be profen for swallow for inflammation.
- 55:08Speaker 1: But you have not yet quit your job, which we
- 55:10Speaker 1: all know is the real solution.
- 55:12Speaker 2: Yes, obviously right, No, that's unfortunately I'm not allowed to
- 55:17Speaker 2: do that.
- 55:17Speaker 1: That's a bummer. That really sucks, all right, So send
- 55:21Speaker 1: us your escapist book recommendations, and Planto faciet is dealing
- 55:26Speaker 1: with suggestions. If you're still listening to the podcast at
