- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Sarah Strickland.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Premier Tony Wacom will be sitting down with stakeholders affected
- 0:10Speaker 1: by the trade war with the United States once he
- 0:13Speaker 1: returns from Norway. Richard Duggan reports.
- 0:16Speaker 2: The Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labor, the official opposition,
- 0:20Speaker 2: and NDP have all called on the Premier to reconvene
- 0:22Speaker 2: the tariff roundtable. That had been established under former Premier
- 0:26Speaker 2: Andrew Fury. In a statement to VOCM News, Wakeham says
- 0:29Speaker 2: he wrote to partners who helped drive the province's economy
- 0:32Speaker 2: to tell them that he was monitoring developments and inviting
- 0:35Speaker 2: them to share actual or anticipated fallout of the trade war.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Wakeham will sit down with all the players to discuss
- 0:41Speaker 2: individual concerns and Canada's response to the trade war when
- 0:44Speaker 2: he returns from the offshore Northern Seas Conference. The province
- 0:47Speaker 2: says the meeting will be scheduled to give people time
- 0:50Speaker 2: to assess the federal government's response and will focus on
- 0:52Speaker 2: identifying challenges, mitigating impacts, and ensure people's interests are protected.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Ontario Premier Doug Ford says he's bringing the heat down
- 1:01Speaker 1: a bit after a name-calling dispute with U.S. President Donald Trump.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Trump and Ford have been trading barbs in recent days
- 1:09Speaker 1: given the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Earlier this week, Trump called Ford a flunky to Governor Kearney.
- 1:18Speaker 1: The Ontario premier didn't hold back in his response, calling
- 1:21Speaker 1: him a loser and saying he could kiss his you-know-what.
- 1:25Speaker 3: And you think an insult from him hurts me?
- 1:28Speaker 4: Well, bring it on, buddy. I'm ready.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Bring it on. You know something? I've dealt with guys
- 1:32Speaker 3: like you my whole life. And guess what? Y'all become
- 1:35Speaker 3: losers because you're a loser. I have a lot of
- 1:38Speaker 3: real estate on my ass, so he has a lot
- 1:40Speaker 3: of room to kiss my ass. I have more courage,
- 1:42Speaker 3: more brains in my baby toe than he has in
- 1:45Speaker 3: his whole body.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Ford has since stated that he plans to draw back
- 1:48Speaker 1: on the name-calling and stay focused on fighting for Canada.
- 1:52Speaker 1: A political science professor at Memorial University, Dr. Amanda Bittner says...
- 1:57Speaker 1: We've been seeing a bit of bad behavior from both sides.
- 2:01Speaker 4: This makes people laugh, but also he's making himself look tough,
- 2:05Speaker 4: and he's making himself look like he doesn't care about
- 2:08Speaker 4: what Trump thinks about this. He wants him to know
- 2:11Speaker 4: that he won't stand up against bullies. And we all
- 2:14Speaker 4: know that Trump is a bully, so this part is
- 2:16Speaker 4: maybe not problematic in and of itself. How we talk
- 2:19Speaker 4: about this, different story, right? So name-calling, never okay. And unfortunately,
- 2:25Speaker 4: this can escalate.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Stars continue to pay tribute to Dolly Parton, who died
- 2:31Speaker 1: yesterday in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 80. In
- 2:34Speaker 1: a social media post, singer-songwriter and Beatles legend Paul McCartney
- 2:38Speaker 1: acknowledged her singing and philanthropy, which he called, quote, unrivaled
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the world of country music. Actress and activist Jane
- 2:46Speaker 1: Fonda said her 9 to 5 co-star could be naughty
- 2:49Speaker 1: and playful, but also a deep, soulful thinker who could
- 2:53Speaker 1: see through people. Meanwhile, singer Kelly Clarkson acknowledged in her
- 2:57Speaker 1: own social media post Parton's ability to make everyone feel special, seen,
- 3:02Speaker 1: and welcomed. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
