- 0:00What if saying no did not make you feel selfish and setting
- 0:05a boundary actually did not mean that you were letting anyone down.
- 0:10What if? I'm Kimberly Boyd.
- 0:12Welcome to Candid Coach Conversations.
- 0:14I am the founder of Live Life Fully, and today I have
- 0:19with me Savannah Burke, a certified Live Life Fully coach.
- 0:21Good morning! How are you this morning?
- 0:23Good morning, Savannah. I'm
- 0:24doing great.
- 0:26Me
- 0:27Beautiful day, the sun is out, it's not 115 degrees yet, so
- 0:27too. my gosh. Amen. Amen.
- 0:33Yes.
- 0:34it's wonderful.
- 0:36So good. I'm so glad you're here.
- 0:38And I love this topic, and I know you and I talk
- 0:42about boundaries and the importance.
- 0:44And so
- 0:45Yes, boundaries are important and what I love to think about is
- 0:49having boundaries without the guilt.
- 0:50And so as I ask, like what if saying no did not
- 0:55make a person feel guilty and
- 0:58Yeah, so that's the topic of today, boundaries without guilt.
- 1:01So I guess to kick us off, Savannah, I'd love to hear
- 1:05from you about like what do you think when you hear the
- 1:08word boundary, what do you think of?
- 1:11think of protection protection for me Boundaries is one of my absolute
- 1:16favorite things to talk about because for so long I allowed so
- 1:21many people to walk over my boundaries I myself would step over
- 1:26my own boundaries and Funny enough, that's what my newsletters are about
- 1:31this month our boundaries
- 1:33so
- 1:33I was watching something one morning, absolutely love Mel Robbins and I
- 1:37know you do too. And she put boundaries in a, the explanation
- 1:41of boundaries in a way that made it go.
- 1:44And I use this in therapy
- 1:47Yeah.
- 1:47sessions, I use this in coaching sessions when we talk about boundaries,
- 1:52because the way she put it was, boundaries are supposed to be
- 1:57to protect you and your space, not to make someone else stop
- 2:02or start anything.
- 2:02Sure.
- 2:03So many people look at boundaries as ultimatums, because nobody likes to
- 2:08be told, no, you're not gonna do this, no, I'm not gonna
- 2:13accept this.
- 2:13Nobody likes to be told no.
- 2:16And my gosh, so many times, like I said, people would just
- 2:20walk all over mine and I'd be like, okay, because I didn't
- 2:24want to make anybody mad.
- 2:26I didn't want to disappoint anybody.
- 2:28was afraid the way I stepped over my own boundaries was when
- 2:32I was still working in oil and gas, I didn't want to
- 2:36use PTO. didn't want to, I didn't want to use anything.
- 2:41I would work on my days off, I would work on vacations,
- 2:45I would do that because I was so afraid that if they
- 2:50saw that if I took off a week and didn't do anything
- 2:54that they wouldn't need me anymore.
- 2:55Wow.
- 2:57Yes.
- 2:57Wow. You were running yourself ragged, I imagine.
- 3:01my gosh, you have no idea.
- 3:03By the
- 3:04time I left Oil and Gas, or that particular company, I think
- 3:09it had like 150 hours of PTO that I had not taken.
- 3:12wow. Wow. Okay, so
- 3:14Yes. So.
- 3:16I love how you said this that a boundary is protection for
- 3:20you.
- 3:20Mm-mm.
- 3:21And I
- 3:21love that. And I also love that you really described what a
- 3:25boundary is not. And a boundary is not an ultimatum.
- 3:28I love that you said that.
- 3:30Okay, wait. But I also want to back up because you mentioned
- 3:34your newsletter. So if people want to start receiving your newsletter, they
- 3:38would go to, I just want to make this clear, they would
- 3:42go to the website and
- 3:43Yes.
- 3:44which is llfully.com, and then they could go up to the resource
- 3:48test.
- 3:48and you have a free
- 3:51Goody. I'm gonna call it a goodie.
- 3:52Yes, yes I do.
- 3:52You have a free goodie.
- 3:53And
- 3:53people can click that and receive that free goodie, and then they
- 3:58will start also receiving your newsletter.
- 4:00Yes.
- 4:01Okay.
- 4:01That's so exciting. Okay, back to boundaries.
- 4:04Yes.
- 4:05So a boundary is protection for you and it is not an
- 4:09Correct.
- 4:11ultimatum.
- 4:11When you were talking, I was like, Yes, protection for me.
- 4:15Like a boundary, I think of fences sometimes.
- 4:17I also think
- 4:18Mm-hmm.
- 4:18of rope lighting and hula hoops.
- 4:20I'll come back to that.
- 4:22but like a fence. People have fences around their yard.
- 4:25Maybe it's to keep their own animals in, but it's really that
- 4:28fence to say, Hey, don't come in my fence.
- 4:31This is my
- 4:32Right.
- 4:32space. So, yeah, that's what popped up for me.
- 4:37Yeah,
- 4:37and it works in so many different ways, whether it be someone
- 4:42that constantly is a taker and never gives back.
- 4:45So I also look at them as it also blocks energy suckers,
- 4:50time suckers that that set things away from you when you are
- 4:54trying to grow in your own piece, in your own business, in
- 4:59your own job and whatever it is that you're you're willing to
- 5:04grow in. Yeah, so protect yourself and protect your time is super
- 5:10important. So that way you have the energy to be able to
- 5:15give back to others in
- 5:17Yeah.
- 5:18whatever way that you want to give back and need to give
- 5:22back.
- 5:23So you mentioned that you were not, you wouldn't even take the
- 5:27PTO. That the company,
- 5:27Yes, sir.
- 5:28like they know people are gonna take time off and so therefore
- 5:32they have paid time off.
- 5:33Right.
- 5:33But you didn't take it.
- 5:35So
- 5:35like where do you think the guilt comes from?
- 5:38Like in terms of setting a boundary or taking time for yourself,
- 5:42where do you think that guilt comes from?
- 5:44That's a
- 5:45very good question.
- 5:47Or how it
- 5:47You know what?
- 5:47even happens.
- 5:49That's a very, I never stopped to think about where that guilt
- 5:53comes from because I've always thought of, ever since my mother said
- 5:57something to me, guilt is the emotion we allow ourselves to feel
- 6:02when we don't want to deal with the anger behind it.
- 6:05And I think the guilt came from, I didn't want to let
- 6:10anybody down. I did not want to have to get behind in
- 6:14any of my projects. And even now I still,
- 6:17have some when I choose to take time off for like Christmas.
- 6:21And I, cause I think to myself, my clients are going to
- 6:25need me as well. My, you know, whether it be coaching or
- 6:28therapy. And then I think to myself, no, I need this time
- 6:32too. I need this time to reconnect with my family, to spend
- 6:36time with my family. And I really think that the guilt came
- 6:40from letting others down and never
- 6:42Hmm.
- 6:42thinking.
- 6:43How am I letting myself down?
- 6:45Yeah. It's fascinating. So
- 6:47So.
- 6:48yeah, I think that I agree.
- 6:50Like it really does come from that concern about the effect on
- 6:52Mm-hmm.
- 6:54others.
- 6:54So when thinking about setting boundaries and that guilt piece that creeps
- 6:59in sometimes, in your
- 6:59Right.
- 7:00opinion, how can a person set a boundary, even if it's a
- 7:05boundary that they say to themselves?
- 7:08Mm-hmm.
- 7:08Or set a boundary with another person.
- 7:11Like how can I do it without the guilt?
- 7:14Are there specific thoughts they need that you think would be helpful
- 7:17to have? Are there specific words that you think would be helpful
- 7:21to have? How can a person set a boundary and let that
- 7:25guilt go?
- 7:26By remembering that they matter as much as the other person.
- 7:30matter. What they have going on matters and that they have goals
- 7:34that they've set for themselves, either for the week, for the month,
- 7:38or for the day. And that they matter too.
- 7:41Sure.
- 7:41Their time matters.
- 7:42And if this person is, if this person means enough to them,
- 7:50they will also understand. So it's also about knowing the people that
- 7:54you're setting boundaries with.
- 7:56Mm. Okay.
- 7:58So.
- 7:59Really, it's gonna be about getting to know yourself better, I think,
- 8:03and understanding that, okay, so if guilt is the emotion that we
- 8:06allow ourselves to feel when we don't wanna deal with the anger
- 8:10behind it, what is that anger and what's behind the anger?
- 8:14I'm angry that this
- 8:14Yes.
- 8:15person keeps trying to take over my time when they know I'm
- 8:21trying to reach a deadline or I'm upset or hurt.
- 8:25by this person who keeps thinking that I'm here to serve them,
- 8:31or I'm disappointed by the boss that has put this unrealistic deadline
- 8:36on me or unrealistic task on me, knowing that I have so
- 8:41many other things.
- 8:42Love it. Yes. So that is
- 8:44So.
- 8:44really thinking about the anger behind the guilt.
- 8:47Yes.
- 8:48Yeah, that's good. Way to go, mom.
- 8:49N. I know, right?
- 8:51For teaching me that,
- 8:52yes. Okay, so yes. so with that, I guess
- 8:56When I think about boundaries and if somebody that that unrealistic expectation
- 9:01or maybe it's not unreal realistic, maybe it's something
- 9:03Mm-hmm.
- 9:04else that is a usual question and I've stacked stuff in my
- 9:09day or whatever it is.
- 9:09Mm-hmm.
- 9:12I love approaching boundaries with the word yes more than the word
- 9:15no because no I do think creates some sort of a whatever
- 9:19inside of us as we're saying it and to the person receiving
- 9:23it. But I
- 9:23Mm-hmm.
- 9:24love using that word yes and
- 9:26Yes, and and then say whatever it is.
- 9:29So I'm acknowledging and here is the expectation.
- 9:32So something I was working with with a client.
- 9:36she we were working on, we were coaching, and she had some
- 9:40things that she wanted to do, like goals that she had set
- 9:44Mm-hmm.
- 9:44for herself and
- 9:45The time that she was that she had to work on it,
- 9:49let's say it was after she got home from work, and she
- 9:52wanted to spend 20 minutes unwinding and jotting ideas that had come
- 9:55to her. The whole per she was writing a book.
- 9:58She would get home, she would say hello to her family, all
- 10:02of that. She had already told them, like, here is something that
- 10:05I want to do. I want to take 20 minutes each evening
- 10:08Mm-hmm.
- 10:08and work on this.
- 10:09She made it clear, like that's her boundary.
- 10:12And what she was finding is that when she would go into
- 10:17her office and spend those 20 minutes that her husband would text
- 10:21or come to the door, or one of her kids would come
- 10:25in and say, Hey mom, how's it going?
- 10:28They were not asking her to do anything.
- 10:31Now sometimes they did. And so
- 10:33If they were asking her to do something, she really started changing
- 10:37her language to them like, Hey everyone, th I'm going for my
- 10:41twenty minutes and I don't want to be interrupted unless someone's dying
- 10:45or the house is on fire.
- 10:47Right.
- 10:47So setting that boundary, she had told him, but then when she
- 10:51would disappear, she didn't front load them, like, hey, I'm my time
- 10:55starts now, don't come in.
- 10:57So that, and then also she was finding herself, like after the
- 11:0120 minutes, her kids or family or whoever would ask her to
- 11:05do things, ask for something, help on something.
- 11:06Mm hmm.
- 11:07And she hated saying no to them.
- 11:09Hated it. So she would stop what she was doing for herself
- 11:13and go take care of whatever it is that they were.
- 11:16Asking her to do. So we worked on that through coaching, and
- 11:21so she came up with, yes, I will help you as soon
- 11:27as I finish typing this email.
- 11:29Yes, I will do XYZ once I finish this.
- 11:33So she put herself first.
- 11:35Y'all, setting boundaries is not selfish at all.
- 11:35No. It's necessary.
- 11:39Because the selfish, I think what happens when we don't, when we
- 11:43start saying, yes, let me stop what I'm doing, go take care
- 11:46of, let me do this, resentment starts building.
- 11:49absolutely.
- 11:51And when my resentment's there, then you're doing things huffing and puffing
- 11:55around and that's not good.
- 11:55Run!
- 11:57That's
- 11:57the selfish piece.
- 11:59Absolutely. And your family starts to react to it and then they
- 12:04get all upset and then everybody spends the rest of the evening
- 12:10instead of enjoying each other's company, being angry with each other or
- 12:15hurt or disappointed or whatever.
- 12:15Yeah.
- 12:17Act feeling weird here.
- 12:19And nobody wants to spend family time like that because it's hard
- 12:22enough as it is to get everybody together in the evenings.
- 12:25Sure.
- 12:26Yes.
- 12:26and
- 12:27reconnect. And I think that is that I know this maybe doesn't
- 12:32have anything to do with boundaries, but I think reconnecting with your
- 12:37family every day is one of the most important things that everybody
- 12:42needs. Connecting with with those that you love.
- 12:45Yes.
- 12:45So important. Because
- 12:46you blink and it's gone.
- 12:49And so
- 12:49Right.
- 12:50by I yeah. I love how you.
- 12:53put that yes and because expect unvoiced expectations are preconceived fights or
- 13:02hurts.
- 13:02Yes.
- 13:03And you can't expect someone to know what you're thinking unless you
- 13:09say it.
- 13:11Dang it, we don't have mind readers.
- 13:14No, your crystal balls
- 13:16in the shop with mine.
- 13:21Yeah.
- 13:21My crystal balls were on the fritz for, you years.
- 13:24Yeah.
- 13:25So
- 13:25it's sitting right next to the how to how to raise a
- 13:30Yes. Exactly.
- 13:30child book. Yeah.
- 13:32So Savannah, what if thinking about your life and I'm putting you
- 13:35on the spot here? Thinking
- 13:36Thank
- 13:36about your life. And whatever comes to mind for now, maybe it's
- 13:40not the thing. But like what boundary on the spur of the
- 13:43moment on the spot, what boundary do you think has made the
- 13:47biggest impact in your life?
- 13:49That's a very good question.
- 13:51I'm not really sure.
- 13:53I see.
- 13:55No I do, I do.
- 13:57It was when I decided to stop doing therapy on Fridays and
- 14:03do nothing but coaching. And I've only crossed it.
- 14:08And it was for good reasons.
- 14:10And I did not feel bad about doing it because I was
- 14:15doing it for a good reason, for a good cause.
- 14:18my... Yeah. My fate... I'm home on Fridays by myself anyway, so
- 14:23the only person that I have to take care of is not
- 14:27even a person. It's a four-legged furry thing.
- 14:31So... Yeah,
- 14:31she has a mind of her own.
- 14:33But I was so scared that what if I told my client
- 14:38I'm no longer doing Fridays, you're going to have another day.
- 14:42I was so scared that I would lose everybody.
- 14:45I didn't lose a single person.
- 14:47I was able to do that and I got the feedback of,
- 14:51was positive feedback that no, I'm not going to lose everybody or
- 14:56everything. It was a lot easier to go, hmm.
- 14:59Okay. Yeah, this feels good.
- 15:01I no longer was scared.
- 15:03I no longer felt that I was taking things away from people
- 15:07instead of giving back to myself.
- 15:09And it really did. was a game changer.
- 15:12It was a total game changer.
- 15:14My week's still going like this now and I can't wait to
- 15:18get to Fridays to do this right here.
- 15:21Right.
- 15:21I
- 15:22cannot wait to get to Fridays because I love coaching.
- 15:26So very much and I am so thankful that you brought this
- 15:33into my life because it is one of the best things I
- 15:39Does feel good. I love it.
- 15:39think I've ever done It feels good It does and Yes
- 15:41I love being coached and I love coaching others.
- 15:45It's it's fun.
- 15:46Yeah. Okay, so the boundary that has made the biggest difference is
- 15:51your schedule. Really
- 15:53Yeah, evaluating how you wanted your life to look in terms of
- 15:57Yes. Yes.
- 15:58your work days. I love that.
- 16:00Yeah.
- 16:01good so good i think one of the bit the boundaries there's
- 16:05been several but one of the boundaries that really has made the
- 16:09biggest difference is again it goes i think it does go back
- 16:13to scheduling it was it was creating that boundary of my morning
- 16:17Mm-hmm.
- 16:17routine
- 16:17and i know listeners are probably like this woman talks about her
- 16:22morning routine y'all i'm talking
- 16:23Yeah.
- 16:24you it is
- 16:26The best.
- 16:26Yes, it's a game changer.
- 16:28It is it's a game change, it's a life changer, it's a
- 16:32Yes, it sets the tone.
- 16:34It sets the tone for the rest of the day.
- 16:34minute change, it's a everything change.
- 16:36It does.
- 16:37Yes. And then really deciding and I day I make this decision
- 16:41first thing in the morning, like when I'm doing my morning routine,
- 16:45what my day
- 16:45Mm-hmm.
- 16:46it's gonna look like. And so when I have that idea up
- 16:50front, yes I can pivot when necessary.
- 16:52Period. And when anything does come in, a request, an email, a
- 16:57whatever you name it, I can evaluate, okay, let me think about
- 17:02that.
- 17:02You've made a request. Okay, let me think for a minute.
- 17:05I don't answer right away.
- 17:07Like, okay, I need a minute.
- 17:08Let me think. Let me take a pause, take a breath.
- 17:11And then I think about does that align with what I set
- 17:14up for myself for the day?
- 17:16And if
- 17:16Mm-hmm.
- 17:17not, then my answer is when can I?
- 17:19Okay, that would be on Sunday.
- 17:21Okay, yes. I heard you, this is what you want.
- 17:24Yes, I can do it, and it's gonna have to wait until
- 17:28Sunday at three o'clock.
- 17:29Right.
- 17:30Best boundary. So it does go back to time.
- 17:32I think that's so interesting.
- 17:33Both of us are like
- 17:33Mm-mm.
- 17:34it was a time thing.
- 17:36Time you dedicated
- 17:36Yes!
- 17:37on Friday. Time I dedicate on the mornings and in the evenings.
- 17:43And I
- 17:43Mm-hmm.
- 17:44don't think like years ago, I don't think
- 17:47Like if somebody said, Kiberly, would you consider your morning routine boundaries?
- 17:53And I'd I'd be like, no.
- 17:54No!
- 17:55I didn't even
- 17:56know. But it was through coaching that I realized, like, that is
- 18:00boundary. I mean, would you have thought
- 18:01Mm-hmm.
- 18:02rearranging your work schedule would be classified as a boundary?
- 18:06No,
- 18:06I would not have I thought that was just a career choice,
- 18:10Right.
- 18:11you know, but no
- 18:13Yeah, that is,
- 18:13Yes.
- 18:14that's the reason setting up your, your month, your week, your day.
- 18:21That's the reason it's so important is to set those boundaries.
- 18:23Yes. Yes. So good. my god.
- 18:26Because nobody,
- 18:28nobody likes to go, you know, yeah, I can do that.
- 18:31And then you get down to it you're like, Ooh, I've already
- 18:35got something at that time.
- 18:37And I've already said that nobody likes that feeling.
- 18:39No.
- 18:39So.
- 18:41Yes. So setting down that boundary of this is yes and I
- 18:46can do it then.
- 18:47So as you were just saying that what popped up I'm guessing
- 18:51like, okay, so if I want to if I want everybody to
- 18:55leave with something, then my I want you to leave with is
- 18:58pause. Pause, think, what do I have before you say yes or
- 19:02no? And then see if you can turn it in a yes
- 19:06and
- 19:06Mine would be you matter and your time matters and saying no
- 19:12is not rejection. It is honoring yourself.
- 19:17Good stuff. I love it.
- 19:18Yeah!
- 19:19my gosh. Awesome. Thank
- 19:21you, Savannah. I'm so glad you were here today with us on
