Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Reconciling Difficulty of the Change of Human Nature With the Time and Patience Needed for the Change
Transcript
- 0:00The objective is almost unimaginably complex and
- 0:05difficult. Changing human nature, including
- 0:09the inheritance humanity brings from the animal evolutionary
- 0:13process, is not something that is quickly or easily
- 0:17accomplished. It cannot also be done entirely
- 0:21by the action of human mind and willpower.
- 0:25If we waited on nature to accomplish the change, it could
- 0:29take many thousands of years. As we have seen with the
- 0:33development of life and its increasingly complex
- 0:37formulations out of matter and the development of mind and its
- 0:42impact on life and matter, the next stage of evolutionary
- 0:47development which will have far reaching impacts on mind, life
- 0:51and matter, even if nature acts swiftly upon it, could take
- 0:56thousands of years without the active intervention of the next
- 1:00principle of the evolution and the conscious and willing
- 1:05receptivity and implementation of its action by those who take
- 1:10up the conscious yoga of spiritual evolution that can
- 1:14transform earthly life into a divine life.
- 1:20The spiritual seeker can get so immersed in the close scrutiny
- 1:24and effort needed to address the limitations and weaknesses of
- 1:29mind, life and body that he can easily lose sight of the big
- 1:33picture and thus may get distressed, even depressed, when
- 1:39he sees something that has not changed or possibly has relapsed
- 1:45after he thought the change was accomplished.
- 1:48It is useful for him to remind himself or be reminded that this
- 1:54is not an overnight process and there is thus no need for any
- 1:58feelings of failure in the sadhna just because things do
- 2:03not change according to the limited human mind and will.
- 2:08For example, due to the embedded difficulty of changing the
- 2:12action of the sex centre, the seeker may be frequently
- 2:15confronted with what appear to be failures along the way.
- 2:19Given his own close scrutiny as the witness of the external
- 2:24nature, he may tend to become overly concerned, overly
- 2:28critical or overly distressed when sex impulses arise, even if
- 2:34they only appear in the dream state, which itself is evidence
- 2:39of substantial progress, by it being rejected by the act of
- 2:44waking nature rather than a sign of failure, Sri Aurobindo notes
- 2:50quote. There is no reason to be
- 2:53depressed to this extent or to have these imaginations about
- 2:57failure in the yoga. It is not at all a sign that you
- 3:01are unfit for the yoga. It simply means that the sexual
- 3:06impulse rejected by the conscious parts has taken refuge
- 3:09in the subconscious somewhere, probably in the lower vital
- 3:13physical and the most physical consciousness, where there are
- 3:18some regions not yet open to the aspiration and the light.
- 3:23The persistence in sleep of things rejected in the waking
- 3:26consciousness is a quite common occurrence in the course of the
- 3:30sadhna. The remedy is 1.
- 3:34To get the higher consciousness, its light, and the workings of
- 3:38its power down into the obscure parts of the nature. 2.
- 3:43To become progressively more conscious in sleep, with an
- 3:47inner consciousness which is aware of the working of the
- 3:50sadhna in sleep as in waking, and three, to bring to bear the
- 3:55waking will and aspiration on the body in sleep.
- 4:01One way to do the last is to make a strong and conscious
- 4:04suggestion to the body before sleeping that the thing should
- 4:08not happen. The more concrete and physical
- 4:11the suggestion can be made, and the more directly on the sexual
- 4:15centre, the better. The effect may not be quite
- 4:19immediate at first or invariable, but usually this
- 4:24kind of suggestion, if you know how to make it, prevails in the
- 4:29end. Even when it does not prevent
- 4:32the dream, it very often awakes the consciousness within in time
- 4:38to prevent untoward consequences.
- 4:41It is a mistake to allow yourself to be depressed in the
- 4:45sadhna even by repeated failures.
- 4:49One must be calm, persistent and more obstinate than the
- 4:54resistance. End Quote.
