- 0:03Speaker 1: Hike and everybody. I'm Dan Horde and thanks for downloading
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bengals Booth podcast. I have Questions for you edition
- 0:12Speaker 1: as my broadcast partner Dave Lapham joins me to answer
- 0:15Speaker 1: my questions and yours about the draft, about free Agency,
- 0:20Speaker 1: about Joe Burrow, about Carson Palmer, and about a whole
- 0:25Speaker 1: lot more. The bulk of the questions come from you
- 0:29Speaker 1: via Twitter with a new hashtag ask lap. We spent
- 0:33Speaker 1: about forty minutes together and as is always the case
- 0:36Speaker 1: with lap it's great stuff that's straight ahead. But first,
- 0:40Speaker 1: here's a quick reminder that you can have the latest
- 0:42Speaker 1: edition of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet,
- 0:46Speaker 1: or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify,
- 0:52Speaker 1: or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing since Wikipedia. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: know it can always be try did since anybody can
- 1:01Speaker 1: write and make changes to a Wikipedia entry, But overall,
- 1:06Speaker 1: the Internet encyclopedia is probably the first place that most
- 1:10Speaker 1: of us go to to find out basic information about
- 1:13Speaker 1: a subject, and the content is still free with no ads.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Plus sometimes those fake entries are really funny. So here's
- 1:24Speaker 1: to Wikipedia, a useful tool as long as it's not
- 1:28Speaker 1: your primary source. For a college paper. Now let's get
- 1:32Speaker 1: to football, where it's time to ask lap lap. At
- 1:36Speaker 1: this point, all of our podcasts are obligated to begin
- 1:39Speaker 1: with a discussion of Joe Burrow. So here's my first
- 1:42Speaker 1: question for you this week. Give me a percentage what
- 1:45Speaker 1: is the likelihood that the Bengals are going to wind
- 1:48Speaker 1: up selecting Joe Burrow number one overall? I think it's
- 1:51Speaker 1: going to be in the nineties. I really do. I
- 1:53Speaker 1: think that I don't see a box that he doesn't check.
- 1:57Speaker 1: You know, the fact that is his dad coach. I mean,
- 2:01Speaker 1: he's he's football. He's a football lifer already at such
- 2:04Speaker 1: a young age, he's been around the game so long. Um.
- 2:08Speaker 1: You know. The other thing is when all his relationship
- 2:13Speaker 1: with his offensive lineman, he talks about a pregame meal,
- 2:16Speaker 1: always eating with the offensive lineman. First thing he did
- 2:18Speaker 1: at the Heisman presentation was thank his offensive lineman. He
- 2:23Speaker 1: just he just gets it. I think. Uh. And it's
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know when the big difference with him and Herbert
- 2:30Speaker 1: that I've I've heard is, and I asked people about it,
- 2:33Speaker 1: is when you say, okay, who are Herbert's friends on
- 2:37Speaker 1: the team, they list two or three guys and they
- 2:39Speaker 1: struggle to come up with that list. When you ask
- 2:41Speaker 1: how about Joe, There isn't anybody that doesn't like Joe.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Joe's friend to everybody. He just seems to have that
- 2:48Speaker 1: and that boomer to him a little bit, you know.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I mean, he's got he's got the takes over the room.
- 2:54Speaker 1: He's the personality guy that everybody gravitates toward. And I
- 2:58Speaker 1: think that's a leadership quality. That is something that it's
- 3:02Speaker 1: a huge X factor for quarterback. And then you know
- 3:06Speaker 1: that that that huge and tangible I think is something
- 3:08Speaker 1: that separates him. Plus he's pretty damn good. I mean physically,
- 3:12Speaker 1: I mean, you know, when you're when you complete over
- 3:15Speaker 1: you know, over seventy five percent of your passes, including
- 3:18Speaker 1: the National Championship game that brought it down from like
- 3:21Speaker 1: seventy eight to about seventy. Um, you're you're you're getting
- 3:26Speaker 1: it down at a very high level. So and you know,
- 3:28Speaker 1: when I watch a little tape of him, the thing
- 3:30Speaker 1: that impresses me about him is his um feeling that pressure.
- 3:34Speaker 1: You know that some guys have that innate ability to
- 3:37Speaker 1: sense it and feel it almost without you know, eyes
- 3:39Speaker 1: in the back of the head, kind of thing, and
- 3:41Speaker 1: they'll slidestep or step up at just the right time.
- 3:44Speaker 1: And with him, you'll see guys sometimes start to look
- 3:48Speaker 1: and peripherby try to catch He never does. I'm watching
- 3:51Speaker 1: him and he's just it's almost like almost like he
- 3:55Speaker 1: has a sense of touch. That's when they're close to him,
- 3:58Speaker 1: he can almost sense him being you know, a foot
- 4:00Speaker 1: away from him or something, because all he has his
- 4:03Speaker 1: eyes down field all the time. I mean, they are
- 4:06Speaker 1: trained down the football field, and that that's a that's
- 4:09Speaker 1: a good quality because you know, if you can't take
- 4:14Speaker 1: your eyes off the off the target down the football field,
- 4:17Speaker 1: he never does, never does. I mean, that was another
- 4:20Speaker 1: trait that I'm like, wow, that's that's pretty impressive because
- 4:23Speaker 1: he was feeling a pretty extemif an eat a lot
- 4:25Speaker 1: of times and never diverted his eyes. And I'm like, man,
- 4:29Speaker 1: that's as a lineman, you gotta love that. And there's
- 4:32Speaker 1: no question, you know. And then he just he throws
- 4:34Speaker 1: the ball accurately to such tight spots. I mean he
- 4:37Speaker 1: throws he's straight a quarterback anticipation and accuracy. You know,
- 4:40Speaker 1: he throws it before they're you know, come out of
- 4:44Speaker 1: their break and puts it to a spot where that's
- 4:46Speaker 1: the best spot to throw it from them to catch it.
- 4:48Speaker 1: He has so many, so many boxes check like I said,
- 4:51Speaker 1: and you know you can. You can drive yourself nuts
- 4:54Speaker 1: trying to find the negative thing about him. Why do that?
- 4:57Speaker 1: You know? Just accept it. I mean, he's he's frint,
- 5:01Speaker 1: he's a very rare had a very rare season. Accept it.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Make a decision that he's the guy. Don't worry, be happy,
- 5:09Speaker 1: make the pick, move on, move on. As I told
- 5:13Speaker 1: somebody the other day, I'm just happy that Andy Reid
- 5:16Speaker 1: got a Super Bowl ring before Burrow begins his run
- 5:19Speaker 1: of six in a row. It was nice that he
- 5:21Speaker 1: was able to get one before the Burrow era begins,
- 5:23Speaker 1: you know. And that's that's the interesting thing because as
- 5:26Speaker 1: soon as you know, Mahomes wins the Super Bowl with
- 5:28Speaker 1: Andy Reid, and now they're talking about the forty million
- 5:31Speaker 1: dollars contract and what's not going to do the roster
- 5:34Speaker 1: because they built a nice roster around him with that
- 5:36Speaker 1: rookie contract. And that's what you know, you can get
- 5:39Speaker 1: done potentially with Joe. You could have him a fixed
- 5:43Speaker 1: price of thirty five thirty six million dollars over a
- 5:46Speaker 1: five year time frame potentially, and Mahomes is going to
- 5:50Speaker 1: be making more than that on an annual basis, saying
- 5:53Speaker 1: forty forty four million dollars a year. It's crazy. So
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know, we've seen it with Flacco wins it and
- 6:01Speaker 1: they have to just sumble the team when he gets
- 6:03Speaker 1: his one hundred million dollars plus payday, And I wonder
- 6:06Speaker 1: what's going to happen with Mahomes. We've seen cases of it,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and we've seen cases of you know, get the young
- 6:11Speaker 1: quarterback that you can build around, put a good roster
- 6:14Speaker 1: around him, and make your run. Maybe the Bengals kipt
- 6:17Speaker 1: out done with Joe Burrow. So Joe Burrow got along
- 6:20Speaker 1: with everybody, as you mentioned at LSU and before that
- 6:23Speaker 1: at Ohio State, but one of his closest friends with
- 6:25Speaker 1: Sam Hubbard. They were hanging out together in Miami for
- 6:28Speaker 1: the Super Bowl and during the course of that, Joe
- 6:31Speaker 1: Burrow went on the Dan Patrick Show and was asked
- 6:34Speaker 1: about being potentially the number one pick in the draft,
- 6:36Speaker 1: and he said, yes, I'd like to be the number
- 6:37Speaker 1: one pick, and I want to go to a team
- 6:39Speaker 1: that is committed to winning the Super Bowl. And naturally
- 6:42Speaker 1: that set off the alarm bells because it sounds so
- 6:45Speaker 1: much like the criticism that Carson Palmer repeats to anybody
- 6:49Speaker 1: that will listen. Should we be concerned about those comments
- 6:52Speaker 1: by Joe Burrow? No, I don't think so. I mean,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I think I think those are those are comments that
- 6:58Speaker 1: a competitor makes. And Joe Borrow the one thing I
- 7:01Speaker 1: talked to a couple of his offensive lamar at the
- 7:03Speaker 1: Senior Bowl from lsu Castle Berry and Lewis, and you
- 7:07Speaker 1: know they both said, in his polite a way or
- 7:11Speaker 1: as nice away as you can be, he'll cut your throat. Man,
- 7:15Speaker 1: He's a cutthroat competitor. That's Joe Burrow. He'll do whatever
- 7:18Speaker 1: it takes. I'm like, man, I love that. I love
- 7:21Speaker 1: the sounds of that. So I think, you know, his
- 7:24Speaker 1: competitive spirit is I had this great year, won the Heisman,
- 7:28Speaker 1: we won the National Championship. I want to be the
- 7:30Speaker 1: first pick in the draft. I want to win a
- 7:32Speaker 1: super Bowl. So I mean those are just comments that
- 7:36Speaker 1: you know, I want to I want to go where
- 7:37Speaker 1: I have a chance to win a super Bowl. I
- 7:39Speaker 1: don't think I don't think he's necessarily taken a shot
- 7:42Speaker 1: at the Bengals He just wanted it to be known
- 7:45Speaker 1: that wherever I'm going, let's get ready because I want
- 7:48Speaker 1: to win the whole thing, and I hope you do
- 7:49Speaker 1: too as much as I do, because I do. I
- 7:51Speaker 1: want to win it. Man, I'm a winner and I
- 7:53Speaker 1: want to keep winning state the obvious. Really, can I
- 7:56Speaker 1: go off on a little bit of a Carson Palmer
- 7:58Speaker 1: rant here, because I know you like respect Carson Palmer.
- 8:01Speaker 1: But I'm disappointed, Dan, I'm disappointed. I am you know.
- 8:06Speaker 1: The thing, the thing that disappoints me is and this is,
- 8:09Speaker 1: this is the problem that Wit and some of the
- 8:10Speaker 1: guys had with Carson Palmer. Is you know, all right,
- 8:15Speaker 1: it didn't some things may have not gone perfectly the
- 8:18Speaker 1: way you wanted it when you were here. But Mike
- 8:21Speaker 1: Brown made you the highest paid quarterback in the National
- 8:23Speaker 1: Football League. Why was he doing that because he thought
- 8:26Speaker 1: you were the guy that we're going to win him
- 8:27Speaker 1: a Super Bowl and win you a Super Bowl? What? What?
- 8:30Speaker 1: What problem do you have with that? I just don't
- 8:33Speaker 1: get it. And I mean I just you know, I
- 8:35Speaker 1: wish it. I wish at this point he would back
- 8:37Speaker 1: off just uh, you know, keep showing with the with
- 8:41Speaker 1: the deep sea blows, you know, I mean, just just
- 8:44Speaker 1: he's let it go a little bit. So Carson Palmer
- 8:47Speaker 1: played for seven years after he left Cincinnati between Oakland
- 8:51Speaker 1: and Arizona. In those seven years, his team's won sixty
- 8:56Speaker 1: one games. I believe in those same seven years the
- 8:59Speaker 1: Bengals won sixty five. With Andy Dalton AJ Green, Carson
- 9:03Speaker 1: Palmer's teams went to two playoffs, the Bengals went to five.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Immediately after he left, they went to five straight playoffs. Furthermore,
- 9:11Speaker 1: the Arizona Cardinals, which apparently, according to Carson, are the
- 9:15Speaker 1: organization that is, you know, committed to doing whatever it
- 9:18Speaker 1: takes to win the Super Bowl. I mean, I guess
- 9:20Speaker 1: that's what he thinks. They had the number one pick
- 9:23Speaker 1: in the draft last year, just as the Bengals have
- 9:25Speaker 1: the number one pick in the draft this year. So
- 9:28Speaker 1: I get frustrated by any national media member or even
- 9:32Speaker 1: Bengals fans. I guess that take what he says as
- 9:36Speaker 1: gospel when there's really no reason too. Yeah, no, I agree.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I mean, the numbers are the numbers, and um, you know, unfortunately,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I do think the team that he led to a
- 9:51Speaker 1: great season and then he got his knee torn up
- 9:54Speaker 1: but in the Pittsburgh Steeler game in the pluff, I
- 9:56Speaker 1: do think that team could have made a run. Well, hell,
- 9:59Speaker 1: it wasn't Mike Brown had caused your problem? Was Chemo
- 10:02Speaker 1: von All often? You know it was Steinbach not blocking
- 10:06Speaker 1: Chemo von All often. Well enough, if you have to
- 10:08Speaker 1: pick a beef on somebody, But I mean, you know
- 10:11Speaker 1: that injury was tragic, There's no question. I mean, I
- 10:13Speaker 1: think that team was a hell of a football team.
- 10:17Speaker 1: And what's your beef then? I mean, you know, if
- 10:20Speaker 1: you if if you get through that football game healthy
- 10:23Speaker 1: and beat the Pittsburgh Steelers, which I think what could
- 10:25Speaker 1: have should have happened? Who won the Super Bowl? That
- 10:27Speaker 1: you're Pittsburgh Steelers. Come on, man, one more thing. In
- 10:33Speaker 1: two thousand and nine, he leads the team to the
- 10:35Speaker 1: AFC North title and they sweep the division, beat Pittsburgh twice,
- 10:39Speaker 1: beat Baltimore twice, beat Cleveland twice. The next off season,
- 10:43Speaker 1: they signed Tarall Owens, largely because Carson wanted him. Sure,
- 10:47Speaker 1: and that creates the circus that leads to a four
- 10:50Speaker 1: and twelve season and then he quits. I'm telling you,
- 10:55Speaker 1: it's a it is a I'd say it's a very
- 10:59Speaker 1: one side did memory He's got Carson has selective amnesia
- 11:05Speaker 1: on all sides of it. There are there are multiple
- 11:08Speaker 1: sides to every story, no question about him. You can
- 11:12Speaker 1: you can pick and choose whichever one's fit your memory
- 11:15Speaker 1: the best, and he's picking and choosing whichever one's fit
- 11:17Speaker 1: his memory the best. He did throw a pretty ball, though,
- 11:20Speaker 1: best I've seen. I mean the ball came out of
- 11:22Speaker 1: his hand. I'm not kidding. When I saw him throw,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm like, oh my gosh. And Mike Brown, you know,
- 11:28Speaker 1: obviously was infatuated. He's always Mike Brown played quarterback at Dark.
- 11:32Speaker 1: He's always loved quarterbacks can throw it, and nobody could
- 11:36Speaker 1: spin the pig like Carson. Palmer was unbelievably beautiful. Let's
- 11:40Speaker 1: talk about this year's Super Bowl teams, Kansas City and
- 11:42Speaker 1: San Francisco. What can the Bengals learn from those two
- 11:46Speaker 1: rosters as they try to rebuild and reach that height. Well,
- 11:51Speaker 1: in Kansas City's case, they got the quarterback that can,
- 11:55Speaker 1: you know, make miraculous plays. Um, you know, could Joe
- 11:59Speaker 1: Burrow be Patrick Mahomes. Now, Joe Burrow doesn't have the
- 12:02Speaker 1: arm talent to Patrick Mahomes hasn't there's very few guys
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know that that do have that kind of arm
- 12:08Speaker 1: talent is Joe Burrow, Jimmy Garoppolo? Hell yeah, I think
- 12:13Speaker 1: he's cut above Jimmy Garoppolo. Well, what led to San
- 12:15Speaker 1: Francisco forty nine ers to the Super Bowl? Offensive and
- 12:18Speaker 1: defensive line, particularly defensive line five former number one draft picks,
- 12:23Speaker 1: and that group for three and a half quarters had
- 12:25Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes on the run and had him playing Mahomes
- 12:29Speaker 1: like but man for an eight minute period. How do
- 12:33Speaker 1: you score twenty one points in eight minutes? Here kidding me?
- 12:35Speaker 1: He scored twenty eight points in the second quarter against
- 12:38Speaker 1: the Titans, never been done in the Plazz before, and
- 12:41Speaker 1: followed up with twenty one points and a half a
- 12:43Speaker 1: quarter basically in the Super Bowls. He's really he's really
- 12:47Speaker 1: a remarkable talent. Mahomes is. But the San Francisco forty
- 12:52Speaker 1: nine is almost won the Super Bowl because of their defense,
- 12:56Speaker 1: their ability to run the football and you know, not
- 13:00Speaker 1: put too much on the quarterback. Kansas City won the
- 13:03Speaker 1: Super Bowl because they have a freakazoid at the quarterback position,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and you know they pick up honey Badger and free agency.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I mean they made some moves, they got some pieces.
- 13:15Speaker 1: You know, they improved their defense in free agency the
- 13:19Speaker 1: drafts as well. They signed Steve Spagnolo to coach it. Um.
- 13:23Speaker 1: You know, he did a great job. So it can
- 13:26Speaker 1: it can be done. If the forty nine ers went
- 13:30Speaker 1: from four and twelve to the Super Bowl, it's happened.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Coach the Senior Bowl then coached the Super Bowl same year. Absolutely,
- 13:37Speaker 1: And you know that's why this this Senior Bowl thing,
- 13:42Speaker 1: you know, Mike Mayock is when he got me all
- 13:45Speaker 1: juiced up down there because you know, he said, man,
- 13:48Speaker 1: the Senior Bowl. We just down here last year and
- 13:50Speaker 1: six players four week coached, two week coached. Hegens every
- 13:53Speaker 1: one of them. We had him called every one of them.
- 13:55Speaker 1: They all made our team. They all made contributions. That's
- 13:58Speaker 1: the motherload. You know. They hit the mother there's no
- 14:00Speaker 1: doubt about it. But we'll see if the Bengals experience
- 14:03Speaker 1: down there at the Senior Bowl can help them, you know,
- 14:05Speaker 1: put some pieces together. As great as Mahomes was in
- 14:09Speaker 1: the playoffs and in the final six and a half
- 14:11Speaker 1: minutes to the Super Bowl this year, to me, what's
- 14:13Speaker 1: even more impressive still is last year's AFC Championship game,
- 14:17Speaker 1: thirty one points in the second half against the Bill
- 14:20Speaker 1: Belichick defense. He just never got the ball in overtime. Unbelievable.
- 14:24Speaker 1: And I think everybody thinks that if they have won
- 14:27Speaker 1: the toss, he probably would have taken them for a
- 14:29Speaker 1: touchdown and have made the Super Bowl. And you know,
- 14:31Speaker 1: if d Ford lines up on side, they're in the
- 14:34Speaker 1: Super Bowl two years in a row. And ironically d
- 14:37Speaker 1: Ford playing against them with the San Francisco forty nine ers.
- 14:40Speaker 1: It was a little twist of twist of faith there.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, the Kansas City Chiefs have a
- 14:47Speaker 1: generational talent as the quarterback position. You're not a Twitter guy,
- 14:51Speaker 1: but I have started a new hashtag on Twitter, ask lap.
- 14:56Speaker 1: I have invited people to ask questions when we get
- 14:59Speaker 1: together there for podcasts. So I've got a bunch of
- 15:01Speaker 1: them today. Are you ready ready to roll? All right?
- 15:04Speaker 1: This comes from t Justin What Bengals free agent is
- 15:08Speaker 1: essential to resign? Boy? I mean, you know, I think
- 15:16Speaker 1: I think the whole thing hinges on AJ Green. I
- 15:20Speaker 1: think I think he is the king Domino. If they
- 15:23Speaker 1: can get something done with Aj Green, I think everything
- 15:25Speaker 1: else falls into place. If they can't Um, you know
- 15:30Speaker 1: then then then now you're talking about do we tag
- 15:33Speaker 1: them other we cause the ill will of their problems there.
- 15:35Speaker 1: I think I think a J. Green is the is
- 15:39Speaker 1: the centerpiece, and um, if that could happen. I mean,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I think Joe Mixon is an astanding player. You got
- 15:45Speaker 1: to sign Joe, but he's not a free agent, but
- 15:49Speaker 1: extend him. I wouldn't let him get to that last
- 15:51Speaker 1: year of his contract. But I think the uh, the
- 15:54Speaker 1: biggest component right now is the AJ Green factor. If
- 15:59Speaker 1: you have to tag him, tag him and trade him,
- 16:02Speaker 1: or play it out and hope that you can get
- 16:04Speaker 1: a good deal done down the road. Yeah, I think
- 16:06Speaker 1: I think that. I'm not sure I tag him and
- 16:09Speaker 1: trade him. I tag him and see what I I
- 16:13Speaker 1: think that he is gonna come back and play like
- 16:16Speaker 1: AJ Green can play. And I mean, if you've if
- 16:21Speaker 1: you've got a guy that and I know he's starting
- 16:25Speaker 1: to get a little bit long on the tooth, but
- 16:26Speaker 1: he's a freak athlete. Now honestly, I mean you look
- 16:29Speaker 1: at his body other than okay, he's had some injuries
- 16:33Speaker 1: down the stretch here in this this ankle injury, it
- 16:35Speaker 1: is a joint, you know, but he has not had
- 16:39Speaker 1: any knee reconstructions or anything like that, so he's still
- 16:43Speaker 1: pretty intact, and he's an elite athlete. He's a world
- 16:45Speaker 1: class athlete. When you have a guy like that, there's
- 16:48Speaker 1: a proven commodity and you trade him for a fifty
- 16:53Speaker 1: fifty proposition as a draft pick, um not every wide
- 16:56Speaker 1: receiver there was drafted in the first round was panned
- 16:58Speaker 1: out seem more bu than guys that can play. This
- 17:02Speaker 1: guy not only has proven he can play, he's proven
- 17:04Speaker 1: he can play at the highest level in the National
- 17:06Speaker 1: Football League. I mean, he's one of your greatest players
- 17:09Speaker 1: of all time. Until I know that he's not that
- 17:12Speaker 1: guy anymore, I don't throw him away. I just don't
- 17:16Speaker 1: do it. I don't know. I'd make sure that I
- 17:20Speaker 1: would have exhausted every potential because man, I just know
- 17:25Speaker 1: every player you talked to in that locker room, even
- 17:27Speaker 1: the last year's you know, catastrophe and debacle, they all
- 17:31Speaker 1: still love what he does. The leader is in a
- 17:35Speaker 1: quiet way, you know, just by his actions. His actions
- 17:37Speaker 1: speak so much louder than his words. And every teammate,
- 17:41Speaker 1: every coach, everybody in the organization doesn't just like aj Green.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They loved aj Green, So, I mean it could it
- 17:48Speaker 1: could have gotten ugly and nasty, didn't even come close.
- 17:52Speaker 1: That tells me something about him too. I don't give
- 17:56Speaker 1: up by the aj Green that fast. Next question comes
- 17:59Speaker 1: from John. I like this one. If Miami offered all
- 18:02Speaker 1: three of its first round picks this year, plus a
- 18:05Speaker 1: third rounder this year and a number one next year,
- 18:10Speaker 1: would you trade the number one overall pick? Well, I would.
- 18:13Speaker 1: I would think that Miami is targeting Joe Burrow, and
- 18:17Speaker 1: at that point, I would say, what am I missing?
- 18:19Speaker 1: If they want to give me all of that for
- 18:21Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, that should solidify my feelings about Joe Burrow.
- 18:27Speaker 1: So I'd be careful, you know, I'd certainly be tempted,
- 18:30Speaker 1: but I'd be careful. And Okay, So that fifth pick
- 18:34Speaker 1: who's there, Well, Herbert who I saw in like, but
- 18:38Speaker 1: I think, you know, some of the mock drafts that
- 18:40Speaker 1: are coming out now that I'm seeing have him as
- 18:41Speaker 1: a mid first round pick. And that's what I heard
- 18:43Speaker 1: a lot of people talking about down there. And you know,
- 18:48Speaker 1: Todd McShay is down there all week getting information, and
- 18:50Speaker 1: so he's probably hearing talking to a lot of the
- 18:52Speaker 1: same people I was talking to and a lot of
- 18:54Speaker 1: people had Herbert as a as a mid first rounder,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and it looks like at me Indianapolis is the latest
- 19:01Speaker 1: destination for him, which makes a lot of sense. So, okay,
- 19:06Speaker 1: do you take Herbert at five? If you take two,
- 19:08Speaker 1: you get crucified if you take another injured guy with
- 19:11Speaker 1: your first round pick. After the run you'd been on
- 19:14Speaker 1: with guys selecting guys and you know, hurt before they
- 19:18Speaker 1: were drafted, but not hurt that badly with the pack
- 19:21Speaker 1: with Billy Price and then Jonah and not you know,
- 19:25Speaker 1: you picked Jonah. He's played billion Jonah. Both have this
- 19:28Speaker 1: remarkable stretch of availability, accountability, durability, every ability and man,
- 19:34Speaker 1: they can't get through their rookie years, you know. And
- 19:37Speaker 1: John Ross and I mean the list of the Littney
- 19:39Speaker 1: goes on and on. And if you draft twa and
- 19:41Speaker 1: it's like you may have to red shirt him for
- 19:43Speaker 1: a year, I guess at that point you're made a decision.
- 19:45Speaker 1: You're keeping Andy Dalton for the last year of his contract.
- 19:48Speaker 1: If you make that trade and you're gonna take two
- 19:50Speaker 1: at number five, you've made a decision there, and you
- 19:55Speaker 1: cross your fingers the two is going to be and
- 19:57Speaker 1: Let's face it, when he was healthy was a star,
- 19:59Speaker 1: There's no question about it. And the guy, the guy
- 20:02Speaker 1: is accurate. I mean, he's the left handed Drew Brees
- 20:05Speaker 1: in my opinion, with his accuracy pinpoint accuracy. So you
- 20:10Speaker 1: know that's it might be tempting, but oh my gosh,
- 20:14Speaker 1: if if Miami's willing to give to all that up
- 20:16Speaker 1: to get Joe Burrow, you may have to say to yourself,
- 20:19Speaker 1: why are you letting this dude go? If they think
- 20:21Speaker 1: that highly of them, throwing another first round of the
- 20:23Speaker 1: next year, and maybe we'll all right. Next question comes
- 20:27Speaker 1: from Tyler, what player or players will be cut or
- 20:31Speaker 1: traded before free agency? Well, you got to think that.
- 20:34Speaker 1: You know, they're gonna try to move Andy Dalton, and
- 20:38Speaker 1: if they if they move Andy Dalton, if they're making
- 20:40Speaker 1: a concerted effort to move Andy Dalton, they're drafting Joe
- 20:43Speaker 1: Burrow because I think that they expect Joe Burrow to
- 20:48Speaker 1: be able to play right away. And I can understand why. Um,
- 20:53Speaker 1: in this era of young quarterbacks. Look at the young
- 20:57Speaker 1: quarters quarterbacks that were drafted last year, they play I
- 21:00Speaker 1: mean they draft him when they play him. You know,
- 21:03Speaker 1: here in the recent past, obviously. Now you'll have cases
- 21:06Speaker 1: of Mahmes. For example, you know Smith played for a
- 21:10Speaker 1: year for the Homes, Carson Palmer, you know, sad for
- 21:14Speaker 1: John Kittner. I mean, we do have some history of
- 21:16Speaker 1: those kind of things taken place. But I think I
- 21:19Speaker 1: think if they make the determination to take Joe Burrow,
- 21:21Speaker 1: who had the best year of any college quarterback in
- 21:23Speaker 1: the history or college football, they're anticipating he is going
- 21:27Speaker 1: to play. He's the guy. And I think out of
- 21:29Speaker 1: respect to Andy Dalton, who they value as a person
- 21:32Speaker 1: and what he's done for the organization, they don't want
- 21:34Speaker 1: him to have to sit the pine, you know, ride it,
- 21:38Speaker 1: ride it out. I think they Andy wants to start.
- 21:41Speaker 1: He's verbalized that they understand that, and I think they
- 21:45Speaker 1: will try to make a deal, you know, and trade
- 21:47Speaker 1: Andy Dalton. Now the question is what will the market bear.
- 21:52Speaker 1: They may want whatever they would want for Andy Dalton,
- 21:55Speaker 1: but if nobody's going to offer to him, will they
- 21:57Speaker 1: pull the trader and make the trade. That's going to
- 22:00Speaker 1: the interesting point. Sometimes the Bengals value on a player
- 22:03Speaker 1: in the league's value in a player don't coincide. I've
- 22:06Speaker 1: been thinking fourth round pick, fifth round pick, based on
- 22:09Speaker 1: the Joe Flacco and Ryan Tannehill deals the last year
- 22:13Speaker 1: or two. But Mike Lombardi, the former NFL GM brought
- 22:17Speaker 1: up the Alex Smith trade and said he thinks that
- 22:20Speaker 1: Andy Dalton could get the same thing that the Chiefs
- 22:23Speaker 1: got are close to it from the Redskins when they
- 22:26Speaker 1: traded Alex Smith, and that was a good player, Kendall
- 22:28Speaker 1: Fuller and a third round draft pick. I mean, if
- 22:31Speaker 1: the Bengals could get that an established player and a
- 22:34Speaker 1: third rounder, probably even just the third rounder alone, they
- 22:38Speaker 1: would be thrilled. I would think, oh, hell yeah, I'd
- 22:40Speaker 1: do that deal in a heartbeat, you know, starting caliber
- 22:44Speaker 1: corner in a third round pick, definitely, you know. I
- 22:48Speaker 1: mean Andy came in the league as a as a
- 22:51Speaker 1: second rounder. Alex Smith came in the league as the
- 22:53Speaker 1: first pick in the draft. So you know where they
- 22:56Speaker 1: came into the league is a little bit, you know,
- 22:58Speaker 1: different from the store point on what perceived value might
- 23:02Speaker 1: be because Alex Smith has had success. Andy Daltons had success,
- 23:06Speaker 1: But you know where they came into the league is
- 23:09Speaker 1: a little different. Starting point. Man, if they could get
- 23:12Speaker 1: if you'd give a third round pick for Andy Dalton,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I'd take that deal before the ink dride. I mean
- 23:18Speaker 1: I would I'd signed it in any kind of ink
- 23:21Speaker 1: I could sign it and maybe blood. The next question
- 23:26Speaker 1: comes from Christian Well, well, we kind of covered this,
- 23:30Speaker 1: but the question slightly different. Will the Bengals keep Dalton
- 23:33Speaker 1: as a bridge quarterback? Given the chief success with Alex
- 23:37Speaker 1: Smith mentoring Patrick Mahomes for one year before that trade
- 23:41Speaker 1: of the Redskins and the Bengals history with John Kenton
- 23:44Speaker 1: and Carson Palmer. You know, I think one of the
- 23:46Speaker 1: big differences with Patrick mcgahomes and and Joe Burrow. Mahomes
- 23:51Speaker 1: ran a quote gimmick offense at Texas Tech. You know,
- 23:56Speaker 1: the spread stuff, Mike Leach's stuff. You know, the Cliff
- 23:59Speaker 1: Kings played quarterback from Mike Leach and that that whole
- 24:03Speaker 1: evolution at Texas Tech. Everybody after Mike Leads still you know,
- 24:07Speaker 1: went with that almost you know, the running shoot spread type. Look,
- 24:15Speaker 1: Joe Burrow, courtesy of Joe Brady, who they got from
- 24:19Speaker 1: the New Orleans Saints, ran the Saints offense. So I
- 24:22Speaker 1: think Joe Burrow has shown that he can run a
- 24:26Speaker 1: very successful style of offense in the passing attack, in
- 24:29Speaker 1: particular that the New Orleans Saints have employed with Drew Brees.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Drew Brees very quick study, Joe Burrow very quick study.
- 24:37Speaker 1: I mean, I think that that's another thing that when
- 24:41Speaker 1: the Bengals look at Joe Burrow man he processes so quickly,
- 24:44Speaker 1: and Andy's been great with that. That's Andy's I think
- 24:46Speaker 1: it's that's Andy's biggest attribute. Might be Joe Burrow's biggest attribute.
- 24:51Speaker 1: The way they can process information. And the fact that
- 24:53Speaker 1: he was able to digest the New Orleans Saints passing
- 24:57Speaker 1: attack and implement it as well as he did, I
- 25:00Speaker 1: think bodes well for his transition to be a little
- 25:02Speaker 1: bit faster, you know than Patrick Mahomess might have been
- 25:05Speaker 1: other key thing to remember too. When the Chiefs drafted
- 25:08Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes, they were a playoff team already. Alex Smith
- 25:12Speaker 1: was doing an excellent job. He led them to the
- 25:14Speaker 1: playoffs in Patrick mahomes rookie year. So unlike the situation
- 25:19Speaker 1: that Joe Burrow or somebody else would be entering, they
- 25:23Speaker 1: were not ready to turn things over right away because
- 25:27Speaker 1: they had a good team and a quarterback that was
- 25:28Speaker 1: playing well well. I can remember, you know, um, I
- 25:32Speaker 1: can remember when the Chiefs did draft Patrick Mahomes. A
- 25:35Speaker 1: lot of people's initial reaction was what why you got
- 25:38Speaker 1: your guy? What are you doing? And a lot of
- 25:41Speaker 1: people were like, you know, and when they traded Alex Smith,
- 25:44Speaker 1: why are you doing that? Wow? I mean, is this
- 25:47Speaker 1: guy really that good? I will say, you know, some
- 25:52Speaker 1: people had had a pretty good handle on what I
- 25:56Speaker 1: think it was. Leech is the guy's name with Kansa
- 25:59Speaker 1: City Chiefs that saw every snap Patrick Mahomes had beach
- 26:03Speaker 1: with the GM down there taking a look at every
- 26:08Speaker 1: snap he had at Texas attack, you know, and said,
- 26:10Speaker 1: this guy's the greatest thing since sliced bread. And Andy
- 26:13Speaker 1: Reid looked at him and when he saw him in
- 26:16Speaker 1: first and he sees like second coming of Bread far
- 26:19Speaker 1: with the arm talent and the same type of gunsling,
- 26:22Speaker 1: of mentality and everything. So they were sold. But a
- 26:25Speaker 1: lot of people were like, what are you doing? But
- 26:27Speaker 1: they certainly knew what they were doing, no doubt about it.
- 26:30Speaker 1: And like you said, how they manipulated that whole thing
- 26:34Speaker 1: about as well as they could have. I mean, they
- 26:36Speaker 1: get Alex Smith in free agency, he leads them to playoffs,
- 26:40Speaker 1: They get their young guy that's going to take his place.
- 26:43Speaker 1: They get good value in the trade for Alex Smith
- 26:45Speaker 1: and then he has the tragic injury after he leaves.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But you know, the Kansas City Chiefs, the way they
- 26:51Speaker 1: manipulated that whole dynamic man at the most important position
- 26:55Speaker 1: in all of professional sports. That's why they won the
- 26:58Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Question from Greg if you had to compare
- 27:02Speaker 1: Joe Burrow to a current or former NFL quarterback, who
- 27:05Speaker 1: would it be? Boy? You know, I bet, I bet
- 27:09Speaker 1: Joe Brady would say that he sees a lot of
- 27:12Speaker 1: Drew Brees and Joe Burrow. Um, and not necessarily. I
- 27:15Speaker 1: mean they're much different. Joe Burrow sixthree Drew Brees is
- 27:18Speaker 1: six feet you know, if if six feet or whatever
- 27:20Speaker 1: he is, But you look at Joe Burrow has kind
- 27:27Speaker 1: of underrated quick twitch. So does Drew Brees with with
- 27:31Speaker 1: respect to throwing the football and doing some things. Now
- 27:33Speaker 1: he's a lot older now Drew Brees is. But um,
- 27:37Speaker 1: I think processing information, you know, being able to spit
- 27:41Speaker 1: it back out, all the all the things, the mental
- 27:43Speaker 1: capacity for the game, um is. I think there's a
- 27:47Speaker 1: lot of similarities there. So I would take a six
- 27:50Speaker 1: foot three inch Drew Brees. They both throw with I
- 27:53Speaker 1: mean Breeze has got a good arm, but it's not
- 27:55Speaker 1: like Oh Howitzer, but boy does he throw with anticipation
- 27:59Speaker 1: and accuracy. That's what Joe Burrow does. And uh, I
- 28:02Speaker 1: would take that. I would take that kind of career
- 28:05Speaker 1: that Drew Brees said, there's no doubt from Bengals. Nut.
- 28:10Speaker 1: What realistic free agent do you see the Bengals pursuing.
- 28:15Speaker 1: That's a that's a great question. I know who I'd
- 28:17Speaker 1: like to see him pursue. Joe Schobert Wisconsin. Lean Brown's
- 28:25Speaker 1: linebacker and we've seen him um and he's he's He's
- 28:29Speaker 1: a tremendous football player. I'd like to see. I'd like
- 28:32Speaker 1: to see two Wisconsin Badgers. Dan at least like to
- 28:36Speaker 1: see Joe Scholbert in free agency. And I'd like to
- 28:39Speaker 1: see Zach Bond, a linebacker otto Wisconsin, sixty three tourn
- 28:44Speaker 1: and thirty five pounder who was a high school quarterback
- 28:46Speaker 1: who understands, you know, every nuance of the game. Obviously
- 28:49Speaker 1: reminds me of a guy named Ed O'Neill when I
- 28:52Speaker 1: played at Syracuse. This guy O'Neill played at Penn State
- 28:55Speaker 1: high school quarterback. You know, big six foot four, in
- 28:58Speaker 1: strapping lad Well Paternal says, we're you know, we've got quarterbacks.
- 29:04Speaker 1: You're a great athlete. We want to play at linebacker.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Ed O'Neil's like linebacker. They played him an inside linebacker
- 29:11Speaker 1: in their four or four defense. And I'll tell you
- 29:12Speaker 1: what now he was. He was something else. He was
- 29:15Speaker 1: a good first round draft pick the Detroit Lions. So
- 29:19Speaker 1: when I saw that this Zach Baum had played, uh,
- 29:24Speaker 1: Bond had played a high school quarterback, I'm thinking, man,
- 29:27Speaker 1: is this another Ed O'Neill And it's he's he's he's
- 29:30Speaker 1: similar dimensionally sixty three, two thirty five. It will get bigger.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Ed O'Neill was, you know, in that range two thirty
- 29:37Speaker 1: five to forty ish, but then he came into league
- 29:40Speaker 1: and he got as big as two forty five to
- 29:42Speaker 1: two fifty. I mean, I could I could see, I
- 29:44Speaker 1: could see some comparison there. But UH drafted Wisconsin Badger,
- 29:49Speaker 1: sign a Wisconsin Badger and free agency and Uh, and
- 29:52Speaker 1: I think, I think you know, you've got positioned versatility
- 29:57Speaker 1: in both cases. I think they're both good enough athletes. Bond,
- 30:00Speaker 1: I think you know, I would play him an inside backer,
- 30:03Speaker 1: but I think you could play outside as well, he
- 30:04Speaker 1: could certainly play in your sub packages. Schobert does that
- 30:07Speaker 1: for the Cleveland Browns on Wisconsin Win. By the way,
- 30:15Speaker 1: the top two free agent linebackers last year c J.
- 30:19Speaker 1: Mosley and Kwan Alexander. Mosley played in two games for
- 30:22Speaker 1: the Jets. Kwon Alexander was part of a Super Bowl
- 30:26Speaker 1: team in San Francisco, but he played in eight games
- 30:29Speaker 1: after only playing six the year before. So I know,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I mean, I'm like everybody else. I would love to
- 30:34Speaker 1: see the Bengals sign an impact linebacker if they can.
- 30:38Speaker 1: But it's always buy or beware. It is, there's no
- 30:40Speaker 1: doubt about it. Scholbert has got a good experience level,
- 30:45Speaker 1: but it's not like he's still got rubber on the tire.
- 30:48Speaker 1: There's no doubt about that. I think he's into his prime,
- 30:51Speaker 1: but he's not past his prime, which I think is
- 30:54Speaker 1: to be a but he's going to command some bucks.
- 30:57Speaker 1: He's a hell of a player, all right. Let's get
- 30:59Speaker 1: back to ask lap questions via Twitter from James. How
- 31:04Speaker 1: does Jonah Williams compare to this year's offensive tackle class
- 31:09Speaker 1: in the draft. I think very favorably. You know, down
- 31:12Speaker 1: at the Senior Bowl, Um, they were all over this
- 31:17Speaker 1: Josh Jones out of Houston. You've seen him dan six
- 31:19Speaker 1: foot seven three and ten pounder, very athletic guy. He's
- 31:24Speaker 1: he's um, but he's only got thirty two eighth inch arms.
- 31:27Speaker 1: I couldn't believe it. And I you know, I looked
- 31:29Speaker 1: at his arms, look a little short, but they were
- 31:31Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not saying t Rex, but but the
- 31:35Speaker 1: thing I want watching him play, he had um, quiet,
- 31:39Speaker 1: patient feet. They were really good and very active hands. Boy.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Now he made up for his lack of length of
- 31:46Speaker 1: his arms by how quick he was with his hands.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And I think I think he was probably the one
- 31:52Speaker 1: that most people were drooling over down at the Senior Bowl.
- 31:56Speaker 1: I like our guy. I think he compared. Now, he's
- 32:00Speaker 1: not six seven and he's not you know he Jonah
- 32:04Speaker 1: will struggle to be three hundred pounds. He's not over
- 32:08Speaker 1: three hundred pounds every day of the year. But he's
- 32:12Speaker 1: Is he big enough? I think he is. He has
- 32:16Speaker 1: really good feet. He has big feet, size seventeen. He
- 32:18Speaker 1: has he has a good foundation, a good base. But
- 32:20Speaker 1: he can move those puppies. You know, he's not He's
- 32:22Speaker 1: not a platting, dead footed guy. He's got good feet
- 32:26Speaker 1: and he's a great technician. And uh, I'll tell you, Dan,
- 32:29Speaker 1: I'm sold on. You know, he had his spreadsheets that
- 32:32Speaker 1: he came up with to, you know, to scout opponents
- 32:35Speaker 1: while in college and watching him off the field everything
- 32:39Speaker 1: he did preparing like he was going to play in
- 32:42Speaker 1: the game, um, all of his I mean the Bengals
- 32:46Speaker 1: offensive line coaches were saying, give us that information, give
- 32:49Speaker 1: us your spreadsheet, what are you doing. I've never seen this,
- 32:52Speaker 1: how are you doing that? And then during the game
- 32:54Speaker 1: he would position himself where he could look right through
- 32:56Speaker 1: the formation and see the left tackle whoever was playing
- 32:59Speaker 1: left on the defensive end, and then in his mind
- 33:02Speaker 1: he would, you know, say this is how I'm going
- 33:04Speaker 1: to set in a technique I'm going to use and
- 33:06Speaker 1: then see how it all unfolded. This kid's the real deal.
- 33:08Speaker 1: This kid is all football haul the time. And I
- 33:13Speaker 1: was impressed with the impact he made. Instead of, you know,
- 33:17Speaker 1: kind of feeling sorry for himself and moping around him pouting,
- 33:21Speaker 1: he gave a lot. I mean, he was he was
- 33:23Speaker 1: making the tackles that were playing in the football game
- 33:27Speaker 1: were listening to Jonah Williams what he had to say
- 33:29Speaker 1: during the week and implementing a lot of it. I mean,
- 33:31Speaker 1: the kid, the kid's a sharp cat. There's no question
- 33:34Speaker 1: about it. If college students had laptops in nineteen seventy four,
- 33:37Speaker 1: you would have done that. I'm serious. You would have
- 33:39Speaker 1: had a spreadsheet and evaluated that the people that you
- 33:43Speaker 1: were trying to block. I would have tried to come
- 33:45Speaker 1: up with some way to umut put it all together
- 33:48Speaker 1: in a in an easy form. Maybe So I did.
- 33:51Speaker 1: I did enjoy you know, tracking and charting, you know,
- 33:54Speaker 1: percentage of times and he's going to swim if he
- 33:57Speaker 1: you know, if he if his feet were parallel and
- 33:59Speaker 1: he's going to go inside more than outside of the
- 34:01Speaker 1: feet of staggered or all that sort of. I would
- 34:03Speaker 1: have started tracking some of that stime, right, I knew
- 34:05Speaker 1: it all right. Question from Brian. We keep hearing about
- 34:08Speaker 1: the new culture that Zach Taylor is trying to create.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Was the culture bad under Marvin Lewis and didn't have
- 34:15Speaker 1: to change? I don't think it was bad. I think
- 34:18Speaker 1: I think Marvin changed the culture to the good way
- 34:24Speaker 1: to the good. You know, he came here at two
- 34:26Speaker 1: and fourteen mess and right away there eight and eight
- 34:28Speaker 1: in the playoff contender, and he changed the culture overnight
- 34:32Speaker 1: and he and he kept working on keeping that culture
- 34:36Speaker 1: was always a big thing, big thing to him. But
- 34:40Speaker 1: just like anything, sixteen years of it, I think it
- 34:42Speaker 1: started to get stale with some guys. So I think
- 34:45Speaker 1: even though he was trying to reinvent it, some there
- 34:49Speaker 1: got to be a little bit of a stale dimension
- 34:53Speaker 1: to it. And I think this culture, um, the one
- 34:57Speaker 1: thing that they stayed was in gage, you know, even
- 35:01Speaker 1: without success. They the two things that you heard were
- 35:06Speaker 1: the team was connected, you know, and that that was
- 35:09Speaker 1: a that was a big word. And try to be
- 35:12Speaker 1: complimentary in their play and sometimes they were and sometimes
- 35:15Speaker 1: that was their biggest problem, playing non complimentary football instead
- 35:18Speaker 1: of complimentary football. But if you can get the two c's,
- 35:21Speaker 1: you know, be connected and play you know, complimentary style
- 35:25Speaker 1: of ball, you can win some football games. And I
- 35:28Speaker 1: think they're striving towards that. Two ask lap questions left
- 35:33Speaker 1: from Brett. Who are some of the top targets the
- 35:36Speaker 1: Bengal should be considering with a thirty third pick in
- 35:39Speaker 1: the draft, in other words, the first pick of the
- 35:41Speaker 1: second round. Yeah, I mean going with the quarterback that
- 35:45Speaker 1: everybody thinks to'll go with obviously, and I do too
- 35:48Speaker 1: at this point in time. Um, you know, I think,
- 35:52Speaker 1: all right, what are what are the two areas that
- 35:55Speaker 1: come to mind from an improvement standpoint? Offensive line, linebacker,
- 36:00Speaker 1: you know, on either side of the football, although you
- 36:03Speaker 1: know defensively they could take they could take a shot
- 36:05Speaker 1: in the arm at any position level. Duke Tobin pretty
- 36:08Speaker 1: much confirmed that down at the Senior Bowl that I mean,
- 36:11Speaker 1: we could take a influx the talent at any level
- 36:14Speaker 1: of the defense and be satisfied with it. So I
- 36:17Speaker 1: think with that thirty third pick, the best defensive player
- 36:20Speaker 1: that's on the board, unless again, it's such a deep
- 36:24Speaker 1: wide receiver group. If you've got six wide receivers that
- 36:28Speaker 1: you say are first rounders and only five of them
- 36:31Speaker 1: go and there's the sixth one still there at number
- 36:35Speaker 1: thirty three, man, you got to think about it. And
- 36:37Speaker 1: then this is where it gets interesting too, Dan, is
- 36:40Speaker 1: that you know, okay, well, how many teams are gonna
- 36:42Speaker 1: call the Bengals with a trade for Joe Barrow? Maybe
- 36:45Speaker 1: not any how many are gonna call the Bengals in
- 36:48Speaker 1: Day two with the thirty third pick a lot because
- 36:51Speaker 1: when they when the first round's done, and everybody shifts.
- 36:54Speaker 1: It sets their board. Well, maybe the best receiver and
- 36:58Speaker 1: that somebody desperately needs wide receiver. I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 37:02Speaker 1: make a trade. I'm gonna call the Bengals. I'm gonna
- 37:04Speaker 1: give you this, this, and this to get to that
- 37:05Speaker 1: thirty third pick. And you have to say, Okay, here
- 37:09Speaker 1: are some of the best defensive players on the board.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Will they be there? How far? I can't move further
- 37:13Speaker 1: back than this, this or this, but I'm going to
- 37:14Speaker 1: pick up these additional picks. I think it's going to
- 37:17Speaker 1: happen at thirty three. I think it's gonna happen at
- 37:20Speaker 1: sixty five because you know this second and third round.
- 37:25Speaker 1: So to start the fourth round, the ninety fifth pick
- 37:28Speaker 1: in the draft, the Bengals have made trades in the
- 37:31Speaker 1: fourth round trying to get up to the top of
- 37:33Speaker 1: the board to start the day. Every new day of
- 37:36Speaker 1: the draft, the Bengals are going to have people calling
- 37:39Speaker 1: because they have the first pick in that new day
- 37:41Speaker 1: of the draft, first round, then the second and third
- 37:44Speaker 1: the next day, who starts their second round Bengals, Who
- 37:47Speaker 1: starts the fourth round? And Day three Bengals. So I
- 37:50Speaker 1: mean I think I think they've got some draft capital
- 37:53Speaker 1: that people are gonna have some interest in. And I
- 37:55Speaker 1: don't think they're gonna just have seven draft picks when
- 37:57Speaker 1: this draft is over with. That's my can extra on it.
- 38:00Speaker 1: But maybe the is the best linebacker available at thirty three,
- 38:06Speaker 1: better than the best rush guy on the board, or
- 38:09Speaker 1: the best you know, wide receiver, or the best interior
- 38:12Speaker 1: offensive lineman. I mean, I'm thinking the thirty third pick.
- 38:16Speaker 1: If I can get the best defensive player as opposed
- 38:19Speaker 1: to the best interior offensive lineman, I'm going best defensive
- 38:22Speaker 1: football player. I mean, there has to be a big
- 38:24Speaker 1: disparity there for it to be otherwise to me. So
- 38:29Speaker 1: I think they're going to be obviously in good positions
- 38:31Speaker 1: to you know, in coaching in the Senior Bowl, they
- 38:34Speaker 1: may have been coaching their thirty third pick, their sixty
- 38:37Speaker 1: fifth pick, they're ninety fifth pick. Whatever they may have
- 38:40Speaker 1: been coaching those guys they may have. They may take
- 38:45Speaker 1: a couple of those guys in those four picks that
- 38:48Speaker 1: they played in the Senior Bowl, and Joe Burrow they
- 38:50Speaker 1: tried to get to play in the Senior Bowl. If
- 38:52Speaker 1: they take Joe at number one and U and two
- 38:55Speaker 1: other guys they played with or coached against in the
- 38:57Speaker 1: Senior Bowl in the first four rounds. It'd be worthwhile
- 39:01Speaker 1: to have been down there at that Senior Bowl. Final
- 39:04Speaker 1: question from a Twitter follower, This is from James. Where
- 39:09Speaker 1: are you becoming an offensive line coach? Man? You know
- 39:15Speaker 1: it's funny when when down there at the at the
- 39:17Speaker 1: Senior Bowl. It does when you see guys that that
- 39:21Speaker 1: caliber going after each other, it's it kind of gets
- 39:24Speaker 1: the juices flowing it, does you know? Um? You know
- 39:27Speaker 1: it's I James as who thats just James? You've hit
- 39:32Speaker 1: on Probably my maybe my biggest regret is that I
- 39:37Speaker 1: did not try the coaching side of it. And it
- 39:39Speaker 1: would have been the best time to do. It would
- 39:42Speaker 1: have been after I was done playing and could have
- 39:45Speaker 1: forced Greg. It could have been an opportunity. There are opportunities. Uh,
- 39:50Speaker 1: you know, I cropped up at the college level when
- 39:53Speaker 1: I was doing some college football for Fox. Just had
- 39:56Speaker 1: a recent opportunity, um that you know that decided not
- 40:00Speaker 1: to do. But I think going from it's it used
- 40:05Speaker 1: to be you never went from player to broadcast to coach.
- 40:09Speaker 1: Once you went to the broadcast, you went to the
- 40:11Speaker 1: devil man. You know, it's like you decided that's it.
- 40:15Speaker 1: There's no there's no return. You can't buy get out
- 40:17Speaker 1: of a jail card. Now it's it happens. I mean
- 40:21Speaker 1: not only because head coach is GMS everybody, it's it's
- 40:25Speaker 1: it's wide open the talent pool. It's not segregated anymore.
- 40:28Speaker 1: It's wide open talent pool. So yeah, I wish I
- 40:32Speaker 1: had done it at a younger age because that's the
- 40:34Speaker 1: one thing that is always going to haunt me. Could
- 40:37Speaker 1: I have done it? I know I would have liked it.
- 40:40Speaker 1: Could I have done it successfully? I feel like I
- 40:42Speaker 1: could have How far could you have gone with it?
- 40:45Speaker 1: You know? Questions that will never be answered. So James,
- 40:48Speaker 1: you hit the nerve. Man, you hit the nerve. You
- 40:51Speaker 1: would have been great at that. But we all know
- 40:53Speaker 1: you're awesome at broadcasting, and I, for one, am grateful
- 40:56Speaker 1: you made the choice you made. Well, I'll tell you what.
- 40:59Speaker 1: It's it's a play. As you're working with a Hall
- 41:01Speaker 1: of famer, you know, on on a weekly basis. I
- 41:03Speaker 1: can tell you that. And I don't even look at
- 41:05Speaker 1: it as work. Damn. I mean to me, it's like, man,
- 41:07Speaker 1: we're just we're just we're having fun. You know, I mean,
- 41:10Speaker 1: I wish everybody's job lent them as much uh you know,
- 41:14Speaker 1: joy and fun and everything else as we have with ours.
- 41:18Speaker 1: It's like I got I've told my kids that, you know,
- 41:21Speaker 1: I my one wish would be that that your quote job,
- 41:26Speaker 1: your vocation, your advocation and vocation would be the same
- 41:31Speaker 1: thing like mine has been for most of my life.
- 41:34Speaker 1: And if, as we anticipate, the Bengals select Joe Burrow
- 41:37Speaker 1: on April the twenty third, think how much fun training
- 41:40Speaker 1: camp is going to be? Oh man, it's going to be.
- 41:42Speaker 1: It will be. It'll be a lot of fun. They
- 41:44Speaker 1: say that this guy is he's the real deal. His
- 41:48Speaker 1: girlfriend lives right up here in Mason. You know that
- 41:51Speaker 1: that was that was interesting. You see, came so close,
- 41:55Speaker 1: so close, and your boy was fruiting the girlfriend. I
- 42:01Speaker 1: talked to him down to the senior moll Yeah, Luke
- 42:04Speaker 1: and and I you know, I said, boy, it was
- 42:07Speaker 1: that close. I mean Dan told me that, you know Burrow, Oh,
- 42:10Speaker 1: he said, dude, it was it was us an Lsu
- 42:13Speaker 1: it was us and and he said I was recruiting.
- 42:16Speaker 1: I said, the girlfriend living right in Mason. He goes, oh, man,
- 42:18Speaker 1: you don't think that was part of my strategy. I'm like,
- 42:21Speaker 1: come on, now, you let him go to Louisiana. These
- 42:22Speaker 1: long distance relationships sometimes don't work out. But what a
- 42:26Speaker 1: great guy Luca is, by the way, and what a
- 42:27Speaker 1: great job he's done. But um yeah, that's it makes
- 42:31Speaker 1: so many so much sense on so many levels. I mean,
- 42:33Speaker 1: his girlfriend lives right here in Mason. Get drafted by
- 42:37Speaker 1: the Bengals the wedding in Mason, Sam Hubbard best man,
- 42:42Speaker 1: Sam Harbard best man. But they are they are good
- 42:45Speaker 1: guy be in the wedding party maybe so uh you know,
- 42:49Speaker 1: that would be that would be uh, that would be nice.
- 42:52Speaker 1: I really would would be a would be a heck
- 42:54Speaker 1: of a heck of a draft to get to get
- 42:56Speaker 1: Joe Burrow in the fold. And that's going to do
- 42:59Speaker 1: it for this episode of the podcast. If you haven't
