Latest / The Most Important Question / TMIQ Today: Meta's Settlement

- 0:00[upbeat music] If your kid's got a phone, you have at some point lost the fight about the phone at bedtime. Everybody has. Here's what nobody tells you as a parent.
- 0:17Bedtime is a figment of your parenting imagination, no matter what we're talking about. It is a tale as old as time. Here's what's new in the past few years, though. Instagram doesn't have a bedtime.
- 0:28That's not an accident either. Like Tristan Harris said, "Each time you open a social media app, there are a thousand people on the other side of the screen paid to keep you there."
- 0:38And we expect our kids' unfinished reptile brains to win that fight. Some good but complicated news this week.
- 0:46Attorneys general in fifty-one states and territories sued Meta, saying Facebook and Instagram were built so kids cannot put them down. Now, on Wednesday, Meta settled.
- 0:56Maybe you've seen the number, seventeen billion dollars. But Meta is not paying seventeen billion. It's paying twelve spread over ten years, which is about two days of revenue a year for that.
- 1:09The rest only shows up if TikTok, YouTube, and Snapchat sign the same deal. So look, the money isn't the story.
- 1:14And to be very clear, it's a complicated story with a ton of ethical and privacy implications I can't cover in sixty seconds, but they're real. But for bedtimes, understand this.
- 1:23Meta has at least now agreed to a two-hour daily cap, forced pauses, nothing at all between midnight and six in the morning, and no notifications during the school day, with an outside auditor checking.
- 1:35We'll see how it goes. But none of it's a new tech. They could have done this years ago. It is a choice they didn't have a choice over anymore. So look, tonight, don't wait for these idiots.
- 1:45We know sleep is the most, among the most important f- forces in your kid's development, right?
- 1:50Midnight to six is a decision you can make in your own house, and it doesn't require waiting for them or giving up any privacy. [upbeat music]
