Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: On October 19th, 1958, CBS Radio's Gunsmoke reached episode 341,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kick Me. John Meston wrote this return to an earlier
- 0:11Speaker 1: Gunsmoke story with Norman MacDonald producing and directing and William
- 0:17Speaker 1: Conrad as Marshal Matt Dillon. In Dodge City and the
- 0:21Speaker 1: cattle trail country, an aging Native American scout named Tobiel
- 0:26Speaker 1: seeks work on a cattle drive after years with the Army.
- 0:31Speaker 1: A letter of introduction from two white men brings humiliation
- 0:35Speaker 1: and sets a dispute of betrayal, prejudice, and revenge before Dillon.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Parley Bear, Georgia Ellis, and Howard McNear are also heard
- 0:44Speaker 1: as Chester, Kitty, and Doc, respectively. We now take you
- 0:48Speaker 1: back to the original broadcast.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Around Dodge City and in the territory on west, there
- 1:04Speaker 2: is just one way to handle the killers and the spoilers,
- 1:07Speaker 2: and that's with a U.S. Marshal and the smell of
- 1:10Speaker 2: gun smoke.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Gun smoke.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Guns Smoke, starring William Conrad. The story of the violence
- 1:34Speaker 2: that moved west with young America. And the story of
- 1:38Speaker 2: a man who moved with it.
- 1:40Speaker 3: I'm that man. Matt Dillon, the United States Marshal. The
- 1:44Speaker 3: first man they look for and the last they want
- 1:46Speaker 3: to meet. It's a chancy job. And it makes a
- 1:51Speaker 3: man watchful.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And a little lonely. Coffee?
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 2: How long do you think it'll take.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Us to drive this herd into Dodge.
- 2:19Speaker 4: After we cross the simmer?
- 2:22Speaker 5: Depends on how hard you want to push them, Brent.
- 2:26Speaker 5: How far is it to dodge?
- 2:29Speaker 3: Oh, 50 miles, maybe. Five easy days, huh?
- 2:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:39Speaker 6: I don't want to bring them steers in too poor.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Well, it's the men that's got poor this trip.
- 2:48Speaker 4: It's not the steers.
- 2:49Speaker 5: There's a lot of juice left in the rent.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Too much, baby.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Look at them.
- 2:59Speaker 4: Oh, it's that old Indian that.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Rode in a while ago. They're just having a little
- 3:05Speaker 5: fun with him.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Well, they better take it easy.
- 3:09Speaker 6: I'll tell him how many warriors he's got waiting somewhere. Hey, Cotton.
- 3:16Speaker 6: Tell that Indian to come over here.
- 3:20Speaker 3: I want to talk to him.
- 3:22Speaker 6: He probably just wants to steer out of the herd.
- 3:24Speaker 4: Well, I'm tired of giving good beef away. That's the boss.
- 3:29Speaker 3: You, boss?
- 3:30Speaker 4: My name's Tobias.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Tobiel, huh?
- 3:40Speaker 4: What do you want, Tobiel?
- 3:42Speaker 5: I guide cattle on trail to Dodge.
- 3:45Speaker 3: We don't need any guide, Chief.
- 3:47Speaker 4: I know the trail.
- 3:49Speaker 5: I got letter from men in Dodge.
- 3:53Speaker 4: You read.
- 3:55Speaker 5: Letter tell you how good guide he.
- 3:57Speaker 4: Is, Tobiel.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Let's see the letter.
- 4:01Speaker 5: Old time guide.
- 4:03Speaker 4: Many years in army. Big scout.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Why, ain't you still with the army then? Yeah, too
- 4:10Speaker 3: old now.
- 4:11Speaker 5: I can guide cattle on trail to Dodge very cheap.
- 4:16Speaker 6: Why, you old liar.
- 4:17Speaker 5: Tobiel never lied. No?
- 4:20Speaker 3: Listen to this, Larson.
- 4:22Speaker 6: To whom it may concern, the name of this noble
- 4:26Speaker 6: red man is Tobiel. He's a liar, a beggar, and
- 4:31Speaker 6: a thief. What he wouldn't steal, a hound pup couldn't
- 4:38Speaker 6: pull out.
- 4:39Speaker 4: Of a tannier.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Give him some cold grub or a three-cent drink if
- 4:44Speaker 5: you have any about you, and then run him out
- 4:47Speaker 5: of camp.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Signed, R. Durbin, J.C.
- 4:50Speaker 5: White. They sure wrote him a good letter.
- 4:55Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 4:56Speaker 5: Letter can't say that. They'd be my friends. They write
- 5:00Speaker 5: letter having me get jobs.
- 5:02Speaker 3: What'd you try to steal off him?
- 5:04Speaker 4: For he'll never steal.
- 5:05Speaker 6: Oh, well, I'll take the word of a white man
- 5:08Speaker 6: any day. Larson, have the boys run him off.
- 5:11Speaker 4: No, hey, let her lie.
- 5:13Speaker 5: They fooled me. So be a man with much honor
- 5:16Speaker 5: among white men in army.
- 5:17Speaker 4: This ain't the army.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Run him off, I said.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Come on, Chief.
- 5:21Speaker 5: No, no, I.
- 5:23Speaker 4: I leave alone. You leave, all right.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Get going. Yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 5: But those men die for this.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Anybody dies, it'll be you. All right, here he is, boys.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Let's send him down the trail.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Well, it's.
- 6:10Speaker 5: Going to be a nice evening, ain't it?
- 6:13Speaker 1: For you, maybe.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Anything wrong, Kitty? Just that trail herd across the river. God,
- 6:20Speaker 3: you'll soon be full of.
- 6:21Speaker 7: Drunken cowboys all looking for trouble.
- 6:24Speaker 4: Oh, you'll handle it, Miss Kitty.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Don't you worry.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Or at least Mr. Dillon will.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Well, shooting him's easy. I gotta talk to him.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Yeah, you can always quit, Kitty.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Sure. And do what?
- 6:37Speaker 1: Keep Sunday school?
- 6:40Speaker 3: You might. You talk like a Texan yourself, Matt. You
- 6:44Speaker 3: know what one of them told me once?
- 6:46Speaker 4: What?
- 6:47Speaker 1: He said I reminded him of his mother.
- 6:50Speaker 2: He did.
- 6:50Speaker 5: He really said it.
- 6:51Speaker 4: Well, that sounds nice, Miss Kitty. Thank you.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I thought so, too, Chester. They got real drunk and
- 6:57Speaker 1: told me his mother was the first woman to be
- 6:59Speaker 1: hung south of San Antonio.
- 7:02Speaker 5: She was?
- 7:03Speaker 3: Who hung her?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Probably he did.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Oh, now, Miss Kitty, no man wouldn't hang his own
- 7:09Speaker 4: mama like that.
- 7:10Speaker 3: Hey, Marshal!
- 7:12Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 7:17Speaker 3: We've come to warn you.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Oh, warn me about what, mister?
- 7:22Speaker 7: My name ain't Mr., it's Weiser. My partner's name here is.
- 7:26Speaker 4: I'll tell him my own name. It's Durbin. Oh, shut up.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Marshal, that Indian's gonna get himself hurt.
- 7:34Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
- 7:36Speaker 4: That Indian.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Across the street there. Oh? Now, that's Stabile.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Keeps following us around.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Says he's gonna kill us. Stabile? That doesn't sound like him.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Well, it's true. You just ask him.
- 7:50Speaker 7: He's been haunting us for four days. Just stands around
- 7:54Speaker 7: staring at us and.
- 7:55Speaker 4: Saying we're going to die.
- 7:56Speaker 7: I had a shot him long ago, but I hear
- 8:00Speaker 7: that's against the.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Law around here.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Where you been from?
- 8:03Speaker 3: Wyoming territory. Where did you know it to be?
- 8:05Speaker 7: We only been in Dodge a couple of weeks. We
- 8:08Speaker 7: seen him around here. What's the trouble between you?
- 8:12Speaker 4: Oh, we played a little joke on him.
- 8:14Speaker 3: That's all.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Made him mad, I guess.
- 8:16Speaker 3: We told him he.
- 8:17Speaker 7: Could get a job guiding trail herds into.
- 8:20Speaker 4: Dodge and give him a letter.
- 8:22Speaker 3: He thought the letter said how good he was, but
- 8:25Speaker 3: it really said he was a thief and run him.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Out of camp.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Oh, I see. And he tried to use your letter,
- 8:32Speaker 3: is that it? I guess so. He went away a.
- 8:36Speaker 7: Couple of days, and since he got back, he keeps
- 8:38Speaker 7: saying he's going to kill us.
- 8:41Speaker 4: It's getting on my nerves, Marshal. I'll shoot him, sir.
- 8:44Speaker 3: You shoot anybody and you'll hang for it, Weiser.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Now, you wait here.
- 8:48Speaker 3: I'll go talk to him. Hello, Tabeel.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Marshal.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Tabeel, those two men over there say that you threatened
- 9:07Speaker 3: to kill them.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Is that true?
- 9:09Speaker 6: They died.
- 9:11Speaker 3: They told me the story, Tobiel. I'm sorry it happened,
- 9:14Speaker 3: but you can't kill men for that.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Tobiel old, but still proud.
- 9:20Speaker 3: You know what'll happen to you if you do kill him,
- 9:22Speaker 3: don't you? You'll go to jail and probably hang for it. No.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Tobiel never in jail.
- 9:28Speaker 5: Man with much honor.
- 9:30Speaker 3: Look, Tobiel, I got no use for Weiser and Durbin myself.
- 9:33Speaker 3: Neither one of them's much good, but the law's the law.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Tobiel no kill. Tobiel's medicine kill. Make very strong medicine
- 9:41Speaker 5: against them.
- 9:42Speaker 3: You work all the medicine you want, but don't you
- 9:45Speaker 3: do any killing yourself. Now, you stay away from them, Tabeel.
- 9:50Speaker 3: You're making them jumpy. It might be trouble if you don't.
- 9:52Speaker 4: Stabile is not afraid.
- 9:55Speaker 3: They carry guns, Stabile, and all you've.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Got's a knife.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Do you remember that?
- 10:00Speaker 4: I remember.
- 10:01Speaker 3: All right.
- 10:03Speaker 2: You tell him, Marshal.
- 10:15Speaker 4: You men don't understand him.
- 10:16Speaker 3: He's not threatening to kill you himself. He's making Indian
- 10:19Speaker 3: medicine against you, that's all.
- 10:21Speaker 7: Well, then why does he keep saying we're going to die?
- 10:23Speaker 3: Why is he always following us around?
- 10:25Speaker 4: Well, he thinks his medicine.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Will kill you, and I guess he wants to be
- 10:27Speaker 3: there when it does. There's no harm in it. And
- 10:31Speaker 3: I'm warning you again, both of you, you leave him alone.
- 10:35Speaker 3: You do anything at all to that old man, and
- 10:36Speaker 3: I'll throw you in jail. Look, Marshal, that letter started
- 10:40Speaker 3: all this.
- 10:40Speaker 4: That was Weiser's idea, not mine.
- 10:42Speaker 3: It sure was. Any idea we've ever had's been mine.
- 10:47Speaker 3: I never did need you, Durbin. Is that so?
- 10:49Speaker 4: Well, who did your dirty work up in Cheyenne?
- 10:51Speaker 3: You did, you fool. I sure did, and you still
- 10:54Speaker 3: owe me. Oh, shut up.
- 10:58Speaker 5: Marshal, you ain't gonna do nothing about that Indian?
- 11:03Speaker 3: I know Tabeo pretty well, and I'll personally guarantee his word.
- 11:08Speaker 3: And nobody's gonna do anything about him, including you.
- 11:26Speaker 4: Mr. Dillon?
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah, Chester. Oh, uh, Mr.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Dillon, they just carried that fellow Weiser up the dock.
- 11:33Speaker 3: What? Oh, what happened to him, Chester?
- 11:35Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Well, let's go see.
- 11:38Speaker 4: Did you see Weiser, Chester? No, sir, I never.
- 11:41Speaker 2: I just seen a couple men coming downstairs, and they
- 11:44Speaker 2: said I better get you. That's all they said.
- 11:47Speaker 4: Yeah. Hello, Matt.
- 12:00Speaker 3: What happened to Weiser, Doc?
- 12:03Speaker 5: Well, for one thing, he's been stabbed, Matt.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Bad?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Bad enough to kill him.
- 12:10Speaker 7: The men that carried him up here said they found
- 12:11Speaker 7: him lying in an.
- 12:12Speaker 4: Alley this morning. He's been dead three or four hours,
- 12:15Speaker 4: I'd say. And there's something else, Matt.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Take a look here.
- 12:27Speaker 5: Somebody hit him on top of the head.
- 12:29Speaker 3: No.
- 12:31Speaker 4: They didn't hit him.
- 12:35Speaker 3: He's been scalped, Chester. Indian style.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Oh, my goodness.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Chester, go find Durbin. I want him with us when
- 12:45Speaker 3: we ride out to arrest the deal.
- 13:01Speaker 4: I told you, Marshal.
- 13:02Speaker 5: I told you that engine was going to kill somebody.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Did you see it happen, Durbin?
- 13:06Speaker 1: No.
- 13:07Speaker 3: No, I'd gone to bed.
- 13:08Speaker 7: That dirty redskin probably got him on his way home.
- 13:11Speaker 4: It hasn't been proved that he did it.
- 13:13Speaker 5: Well, of course he did it.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Who else would scalp a man? I don't know. Look
- 13:19Speaker 4: at that, Marshal. Just look right there.
- 13:23Speaker 7: Hanging right on that check of his like he was
- 13:25Speaker 7: bragging about it.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Oh, Mr.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Dillon.
- 13:28Speaker 3: That's a scalp.
- 13:30Speaker 4: Yeah. Drying it in the sun. That's what he's doing.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That murdering devil.
- 13:34Speaker 3: You two stay here. Go see if he's inside.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yes, sir.
- 13:39Speaker 3: D'Aville. D'Aville. Come on outside.
- 13:59Speaker 4: We got you now, Tabeel. Let's bring him up, Marshal,
- 14:01Speaker 4: right here.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Shut up, Durbin. Tabeel, did you kill Weiser last night? Weiser?
- 14:10Speaker 4: Kim? Stabbed with a knife and scalped.
- 14:14Speaker 5: He died.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Durbin, he died, too. You see, Marshal, he... I told
- 14:19Speaker 4: you to stay out of.
- 14:20Speaker 3: This, Durbin. Now, you tell me straight, Tobiel. Did you
- 14:25Speaker 3: kill him?
- 14:26Speaker 4: Tobiel no kill.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Tobiel's medicine kill.
- 14:31Speaker 3: Then what's Weiser's scalp doing here?
- 14:34Speaker 4: Scalp?
- 14:35Speaker 3: Right there.
- 14:39Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 14:41Speaker 5: Weiser's scalp all right.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Where's your knife, Tobiel? Here, my knife.
- 14:50Speaker 4: Look out, Marshal. He'll try to use it.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Give it to me, Tobiel. You think I kill Weiser
- 14:57Speaker 3: with knife? Did you?
- 15:00Speaker 5: Medicine kill Weiser.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Tobiel no kill. Tobiel, I'm going to have to arrest you.
- 15:07Speaker 3: You're going to have to go to jail.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Jail?
- 15:09Speaker 5: No. Tobiel man with too much honor for jail.
- 15:13Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Tobiel. But you will get a trial.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Let's hang him now, Marshal. He don't need no trial.
- 15:19Speaker 3: I'm the law here, Durbin, and don't you start anything
- 15:21Speaker 3: like that.
- 15:23Speaker 5: Big disgrace to be in jail.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I know, but it can't be helped.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Yes, sir.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Get that scalp. We're going to need it for evidence.
- 15:57Speaker 4: Ready to go to supper, Matt?
- 15:59Speaker 6: I'll be right with you, Doc.
- 16:01Speaker 3: Chester, you better stay here and watch the bill, huh?
- 16:03Speaker 4: Aye, Mr. Jones.
- 16:04Speaker 3: You can go eat when I get back. I'll see
- 16:06Speaker 3: you later. Yes, sir.
- 16:12Speaker 5: I hear Tobiel's pretty unhappy about being locked up now.
- 16:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I had a long talk with him, Doc. I'm
- 16:18Speaker 3: afraid he's going to be locked up for a long time.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Why's that? Well, no judge will hang him on circumstantial evidence,
- 16:27Speaker 3: but he'll probably go to prison. He hasn't any kind
- 16:31Speaker 3: of an alibi, Doc.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Not at all.
- 16:33Speaker 7: Well, if I know Tobiel, he'd rather hang than be
- 16:36Speaker 7: in prison.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm afraid you're right.
- 16:43Speaker 4: What's that?
- 16:45Speaker 3: Came from the jail.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Mr. Dillon?
- 16:53Speaker 3: What happened, Chester? Somebody shot the bill from outside in
- 16:58Speaker 3: the alley.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Is he dead?
- 16:59Speaker 3: Oh, he sure looks dead. Let me take a look
- 17:01Speaker 3: at it. Chester, go out the front and come up
- 17:04Speaker 3: the alley. Yell if you see anybody. I'll cover the back.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Go on. Yeah, I'm coming, Chester. Yeah, what is it?
- 17:32Speaker 4: I seen Durbin.
- 17:33Speaker 3: He ran out of the next alley and went into.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Long Branch there. Durbin.
- 17:36Speaker 3: All right, let's go get him.
- 17:39Speaker 4: Must have been him that done it.
- 17:41Speaker 3: Yeah, it sure looks like it.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Here he is.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Get out of the way, Chester.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Yes, sir. Durbin!
- 18:09Speaker 3: You're under arrest, Durbin. Unbuckle your gun belt and drop
- 18:12Speaker 3: it on the floor. What for, Marshal? For shooting to Beagle. Yeah.
- 18:20Speaker 7: I seen Chester standing there when I come out of
- 18:22Speaker 7: the alley.
- 18:23Speaker 4: Should have shot him.
- 18:24Speaker 3: Never mind the talk. Just drop your gun.
- 18:26Speaker 4: No.
- 18:28Speaker 3: You know, shooting Tabeo was a bad enough.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Mistake, Durbin.
- 18:31Speaker 3: You're finding out I did it was.
- 18:35Speaker 7: I figured Tabeo must have seen me kill Weiser.
- 18:39Speaker 3: At the trial, he'd have started talking. No, he was
- 18:42Speaker 3: home alone making medicine against you. He had no alibi
- 18:46Speaker 3: at all, Durbin. And I killed him for nothing. If
- 18:52Speaker 3: you hadn't killed him, you'd have probably been convicted. And
- 18:56Speaker 3: you'd have gone free.
- 18:57Speaker 7: You can't prove I killed Weiser.
- 18:59Speaker 3: No? Well, I ain't gonna hang for shooting no engine,
- 19:02Speaker 3: not me. Don't try it, Durbin.
- 19:04Speaker 4: Why not? You hit him both times, Mr. Dawkins. Yeah.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Want me to take care of him?
- 19:26Speaker 3: No, somebody else can do it. But you and me
- 19:30Speaker 3: go get to Beagle the real fine Barry and Chester.
- 19:35Speaker 3: I figure we kind of owe it to him.
- 19:53Speaker 4: Gunsmoke.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Produced and directed by Norman McDonald, stars William Conrad.
- 19:59Speaker 6: As Matt Dillon, U.S.
- 20:00Speaker 4: Marshal.
- 20:00Speaker 2: The story was specially written for Gunsmoke by John Meston.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Featured in the cast were Vic Perrin, Ralph Moody, Barney.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Phillips, and Harry Bartell.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Harley Bear as Chester, Howard McNair as Doc, and Georgia
- 20:10Speaker 2: Ellis as Kitty.
- 20:11Speaker 4: That was Gunsmoke, episode 341, Kick Me. Thank you for
- 20:13Speaker 4: joining us at the radio dial.
