Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hello everybody, I'm Mike Michelson and if you were at
- 0:02Speaker 1: American Family Field on Saturday night or watching from your
- 0:06Speaker 1: couch with your heart in your throat, you know exactly
- 0:08Speaker 1: what I'm talking about when I say this. The Brewers
- 0:11Speaker 1: beat the Rays 5-4 after being down 4-0 with only
- 0:14Speaker 1: 5 batters into the game. 5 batters, that's not a typo.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Yandy Diaz reached on a throwing error by Cooper Pratt
- 0:21Speaker 1: and from that moment forward, the night looked like it
- 0:24Speaker 1: was heading toward disaster. Chandler Simpson singled him home, Junior
- 0:30Speaker 1: Caminero drove in another, and then Liam Hicks, a guy
- 0:33Speaker 1: nobody expected to be the star of a World Series game,
- 0:37Speaker 1: crushed a two-run homer off Logan Henderson to make it
- 0:39Speaker 1: 4-0 before the first inning was even done. I remember
- 0:43Speaker 1: looking at my phone and thinking, okay, this is it.
- 0:45Speaker 1: This is the game where the series slips away. But
- 0:48Speaker 1: that's not what happened. Not even close. Here's the thing
- 0:52Speaker 1: about this game that I want you to carry with you.
- 0:55Speaker 1: The Brewers didn't have one big inning. They didn't hit
- 0:58Speaker 1: three home runs in a row or do anything flashy.
- 1:01Speaker 1: They clawed back single by single, run by run. They
- 1:04Speaker 1: chipped away at that four-run lead until it was gone
- 1:06Speaker 1: and then put another one on top to take the
- 1:08Speaker 1: lead for good. Most teams fold in that spot. This
- 1:11Speaker 1: team did not fold. The bottom of the first gave
- 1:15Speaker 1: us a sign early. William Contreras singled, scoring Jackson Churrio
- 1:19Speaker 1: and then Garrett Mitchell line one to right field with
- 1:21Speaker 1: Jake Bowers coming around to make it 4-2. Two runs
- 1:25Speaker 1: in the first and you could feel the energy shift
- 1:27Speaker 1: inside that closed roof with 43,000 people packed in there.
- 1:32Speaker 1: But the real momentum swing came in the fourth. David
- 1:35Speaker 1: Hamilton hit a grounder that got through Jonathan Aranda's legs
- 1:39Speaker 1: and Cooper Pratt scored to make it 4-3. Now I
- 1:42Speaker 1: want to talk about Pratt for a second because his
- 1:44Speaker 1: night is the perfect microcosm of this entire game. He
- 1:48Speaker 1: made that throwing error in the first that started the
- 1:50Speaker 1: whole four-run avalanche. And that's not something you just shake
- 1:54Speaker 1: off easily in a World Series. But he kept playing.
- 1:57Speaker 1: He kept competing. And in the seventh, he delivered the
- 2:00Speaker 1: biggest hit of the night. Which brings us to the sixth.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Sal Frelick steps up against Ian Seymour, a lefty reliever.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Here's the thing about Sal this year. He hit four
- 2:10Speaker 1: home runs in the entire regular season. Four. In a
- 2:13Speaker 1: full year of baseball. And here he is in Game
- 2:16Speaker 1: 2 of the World Series. Fouling off pitch after pitch.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Working the count to nine pitches. and then absolutely obliterating
- 2:22Speaker 1: a 93-mile-per-hour fastball. 408 feet to dead center field, game
- 2:28Speaker 1: tied 4-4. He rounded the bases in 21.4 seconds and
- 2:32Speaker 1: barely looked up. This was the fifth Brewers home run
- 2:35Speaker 1: of this postseason, featuring a left-handed batter against a southpaw pitcher,
- 2:40Speaker 1: and Pat Murphy has clearly figured out how to exploit
- 2:42Speaker 1: those matchups. Then the seventh, Bryce Terang leads off against
- 2:46Speaker 1: Tyler Wells with a double, And here comes Cooper Pratt again,
- 2:50Speaker 1: the same guy who made that error in the first,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and he hits a soft single to right field. Terang scores.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Five to four Brewers. That is the go-ahead run, and
- 2:58Speaker 1: you cannot write a better redemption arc than that. And
- 3:01Speaker 1: then the bullpen took over and slammed the door shut.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Abner Uribe came in to start the eighth. Retired junior
- 3:08Speaker 1: Caminero to open the inning and cruise through four batters
- 3:11Speaker 1: total to earn the win. Then Aaron Ashby in the ninth,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and this is where it got tense. Johnny DeLuca hit
- 3:17Speaker 1: a leadoff double off Ashby tying run in scoring position,
- 3:20Speaker 1: but Victor Mesa Jr. struck out, and William Contreras did
- 3:23Speaker 1: some nifty work behind the plate blocking balls in the
- 3:26Speaker 1: dirt to keep DeLuca from advancing. Two outs, runner at third.
- 3:30Speaker 1: Yandy Diaz steps in, swings, and the umpire calls him
- 3:33Speaker 1: out on a check swing. Game over. Ashby extended his
- 3:37Speaker 1: scoreless postseason inning streak to 15 and two-thirds. 15 and two-thirds.
- 3:41Speaker 1: That's absurd, and he is a brewer. Let me put
- 3:44Speaker 1: this in perspective for you. The bullpen threw six scoreless
- 3:47Speaker 1: innings after Henderson's short start. Henderson gave up four runs
- 3:51Speaker 1: in the first, then retired eight of the last nine
- 3:53Speaker 1: batters he faced before Pat Murphy pulled him. Manager got
- 3:57Speaker 1: some flack for that, but honestly, with a bullpen this
- 4:00Speaker 1: good entering the series at a 1.24 ERA in October,
- 4:04Speaker 1: why would you push your starter into the fourth inning
- 4:06Speaker 1: of a World Series game? You don't. You go to
- 4:09Speaker 1: the guys who have been lights out all month. And
- 4:11Speaker 1: the offense? The nine hardest hit balls in the entire
- 4:14Speaker 1: game belonged to the Brewers. Nine. That tells you everything
- 4:17Speaker 1: about how they were swinging. They weren't lucky. They were
- 4:20Speaker 1: hitting it hard. Jackson Shurio stole two bases, threw Liam
- 4:24Speaker 1: Hicks out at the plate in the sixth, and the
- 4:26Speaker 1: Rays lost both challenges on it. He was everywhere. Contreras
- 4:29Speaker 1: had two hits, a stolen base, and those crucial blocks
- 4:32Speaker 1: in the ninth. Turang doubled. Freelick homered. Pratt singled. This
- 4:37Speaker 1: was a team effort in the truest sense. So here
- 4:40Speaker 1: we are, two games into the World Series and Milwaukee
- 4:43Speaker 1: leads two games to none. Only 11 of 57 teams
- 4:46Speaker 1: that have fallen behind 2-0 in the World Series have
- 4:48Speaker 1: ever come back to win it. Nobody has done it
- 4:51Speaker 1: since the 1996 Yankees. The Brewers finished the regular season 103-59,
- 4:56Speaker 1: won the NL Central, had the best record in baseball,
- 5:00Speaker 1: and they're now 9-1 in the postseason. Two wins, two
- 5:04Speaker 1: wins away from the first championship in franchise history. I
- 5:08Speaker 1: need you to sit with that sentence for a second.
- 5:10Speaker 1: The series heads to Tampa now, and the Rays have
- 5:13Speaker 1: every right to feel like they had this game. They
- 5:16Speaker 1: scored four in the first inning. They had the tying
- 5:18Speaker 1: run at third base with two outs in the ninth,
- 5:21Speaker 1: but they didn't close it out, and now they're staring
- 5:23Speaker 1: down a mountain. Game three is in St. Petersburg. The
- 5:27Speaker 1: Brewers have shown us they can win ugly. They can
- 5:29Speaker 1: win from behind. They can win when the bullpen has
- 5:32Speaker 1: to carry six innings. What more do you need? I'm
- 5:35Speaker 1: Mike Michelson. Go Brewers. We'll see you after game three.
