- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to A Peak Inside Gator Football. Allie Peek here.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm joined today by Landon Tegwell of Landon Tegwell's College
- 0:08Speaker 1: Football Show.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Did I say that correctly?
- 0:10Speaker 1: It's a big, long name. It is a fun, exciting show.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Landon is also a former Penn State offensive lineman under
- 0:19Speaker 1: coach Phil Troutwine, and I feel like that just makes
- 0:21Speaker 1: these reviews... so much cooler because you know exactly what
- 0:25Speaker 1: is going on in coach's head. Um, and that's just
- 0:28Speaker 1: such amazing insight to all of us over at Florida. Uh,
- 0:32Speaker 1: this is brought to you by prize picks.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Don't forget.
- 0:34Speaker 1: New users can download the app, play a $ 5 lineup
- 0:37Speaker 1: and use our code.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It's HMA.
- 0:38Speaker 1: If you win, you'll get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Okay,
- 0:42Speaker 1: so you watched Florida's game against Ole Miss. You called
- 0:46Speaker 1: it an outside zone clinic. When you watch Missouri, because
- 0:50Speaker 1: you told me you've watched Missouri as well, when you
- 0:52Speaker 1: watch them, what specifically do they do defensively that could
- 0:56Speaker 1: make outside zone more difficult for Florida this week?
- 1:00Speaker 3: You know, I think– I will say this. I think
- 1:03Speaker 3: Mississippi State actually got outside pretty well in the run
- 1:06Speaker 3: game against them, especially when they did bounce those outside runs. Look,
- 1:10Speaker 3: I'll say this too. Like, when I talk to other
- 1:12Speaker 3: people in the college football space and everybody's talking about
- 1:14Speaker 3: Buster Faulkner and what he does, like– It's, it's a nightmare.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Like in terms of like being a defensive coordinator, it's like,
- 1:21Speaker 3: what do I do? And it really is difficult because
- 1:25Speaker 3: there is so much, I mean, everybody's kind of talked
- 1:27Speaker 3: about the first play of the game against Ole Miss
- 1:29Speaker 3: where there was a million different things going on shifts
- 1:32Speaker 3: at a certain point, you could have five guys in
- 1:34Speaker 3: one line and then everybody was going different ways and
- 1:36Speaker 3: you got pullers and everything. Like it is so difficult.
- 1:40Speaker 3: And I think the other part of this that's hard, too,
- 1:42Speaker 3: for Mizzou and why Buster Faulkner is the best offensive
- 1:45Speaker 3: coordinator in college football. And he even kind of brought
- 1:48Speaker 3: this up in his presser, I believe, of saying like, hey,
- 1:50Speaker 3: we're going to we'll present it in different ways. We're
- 1:52Speaker 3: going to we'll come and they're going to run outside zone.
- 1:54Speaker 3: You best believe Florida is going to run outside zone.
- 1:56Speaker 3: But there is going to be multiple different instances and
- 1:59Speaker 3: it looks where it looks where they change the picture. Exactly.
- 2:02Speaker 3: So it's not going to be presented the same way,
- 2:04Speaker 3: but they're still going to run outside zone and they're
- 2:06Speaker 3: going to find different ways. And especially when you have
- 2:08Speaker 3: tight ends and wide receivers that are willing to block
- 2:10Speaker 3: the way that this group is. That makes it pretty difficult.
- 2:14Speaker 3: But I'll tell you, as I watch Mizzou, it is
- 2:15Speaker 3: kind of funny. I totally, I see certain things, like
- 2:18Speaker 3: they're going to be a heavy movement front. They love
- 2:21Speaker 3: twists with their tackle and end, where they go to T.E. twist,
- 2:24Speaker 3: where the tackle's the penetrator and the end will loop inside,
- 2:26Speaker 3: and they'll kind of switch that around. And I just know,
- 2:30Speaker 3: I watch it, I'm like, oh, Trout's going to be
- 2:31Speaker 3: on top of that. Like, he has been drilling that
- 2:33Speaker 3: probably all week long into their head, and I'm sure
- 2:36Speaker 3: they've done a million reps in practice. this dealing with
- 2:38Speaker 3: the T twist and talking it over and they're going
- 2:40Speaker 3: to continue to talk it over tonight and Friday night
- 2:42Speaker 3: at the hotel and all of it. So that is
- 2:45Speaker 3: the exciting part is like I watch stuff. I'm like, oh,
- 2:47Speaker 3: I know exactly what Trout is going to say to
- 2:49Speaker 3: them off of that right there.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think having that perspective while you
- 2:54Speaker 1: watch all of this has to be incredibly unique because
- 2:57Speaker 1: you you see what Missouri.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Is putting on film.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You see what Florida is putting on film, but you
- 3:01Speaker 1: also know the internal conversation that's going on inside the
- 3:05Speaker 1: locker room and how they're going to combat it.
- 3:08Speaker 2: I loved your Ole Miss breakdown, and.
- 3:10Speaker 1: One of the things you highlighted was how well Florida's
- 3:13Speaker 1: O-line handled Ole Miss's slanting and moving the defensive front.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So against Missouri, how important is the ability to adjust
- 3:22Speaker 1: on the fly rather than just simply winning your one-on-one blocks?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's really important. They're going to be
- 3:30Speaker 3: very movement heavy. And like I said, that's kind of
- 3:32Speaker 3: where you see a lot of these defenses starting to
- 3:35Speaker 3: move towards is they're all just going to be moving, slanting, stunting.
- 3:39Speaker 3: But Mizzou does it at a high level in terms
- 3:42Speaker 3: of how often they do it, not necessarily like a
- 3:43Speaker 3: very high level. But, you know, the biggest thing within
- 3:46Speaker 3: that is like, yes, it can mess with you. And
- 3:49Speaker 3: there's times with any offensive line, with the floor offensive
- 3:51Speaker 3: line where it's gotten them, but they have been so good.
- 3:55Speaker 3: at picking up those stunts. And the biggest thing is
- 3:57Speaker 3: like understanding your rules when you're dealing with that. And
- 4:00Speaker 3: what I mean by that is, and I watched like
- 4:03Speaker 3: Florida last year and I just didn't see anything close
- 4:05Speaker 3: to this. It triggers in their mind right away when
- 4:08Speaker 3: I have a three technique and he slants away that
- 4:11Speaker 3: I know that I need to brace back into whatever's
- 4:14Speaker 3: coming this way. Like it's clear to me that Trout
- 4:16Speaker 3: has drilled that into their head. It's clear to me
- 4:18Speaker 3: that those five page papers that Trout gives them that
- 4:22Speaker 3: I know he gives them ever since probably probably multiple
- 4:25Speaker 3: different tests. And they have to write it out five
- 4:28Speaker 3: different times and they have to write everybody's responsibility. And they,
- 4:31Speaker 3: and they have to know that if I'm the right guard,
- 4:33Speaker 3: I also know what the left tackle is doing. That's
- 4:35Speaker 3: when we're dealing with this specific stunt. And the best
- 4:37Speaker 3: thing that trap will do is he'll go through and
- 4:40Speaker 3: he'll give you, he'll build out the sheet for you
- 4:42Speaker 3: that week of, Hey, here's this guy's top moves. Here's
- 4:45Speaker 3: each guy on the defensive line. You're going against, here's
- 4:47Speaker 3: his top moves. Here's what he likes to do on
- 4:48Speaker 3: third and three. When we're, you know, when it's third
- 4:51Speaker 3: and one, he, this guy's a big swimmer in the,
- 4:54Speaker 3: you know, in the run game, like little things like that.
- 4:56Speaker 3: He'll give you that, but it'll also give you all
- 4:58Speaker 3: their top blitzes, all their top pressures, all their top
- 5:01Speaker 3: stunt moves and kind of when they do them. And
- 5:04Speaker 3: then he makes you obviously get a million reps in
- 5:06Speaker 3: practice against it. You write it out in the answers
- 5:09Speaker 3: to what to do against it. So it's not a
- 5:11Speaker 3: coincidence that this offensive line is, It's playing the way
- 5:14Speaker 3: it's playing. It's because of this attention to detail. Even
- 5:18Speaker 3: I said coming into the season, people were asking me, like, oh,
- 5:20Speaker 3: this is all great, but, like, it's still going to
- 5:22Speaker 3: take time, right? And I'm like, yeah, absolutely. It hasn't
- 5:25Speaker 3: really taken much time. It's been, like, instant. And now–
- 5:28Speaker 3: and you see these guys taking these huge strides. Like,
- 5:31Speaker 3: watching Bryce Lovett just continue to get so much better
- 5:34Speaker 3: is exciting. And when you run the ball at will–
- 5:38Speaker 3: you start to get this confidence that just creeps into
- 5:40Speaker 3: your offense of like, hey, we can go in there
- 5:42Speaker 3: and dominate anybody. If we're going to run the ball
- 5:44Speaker 3: 50 times and we're going to just continue to move
- 5:48Speaker 3: a man from point A to point B against his will,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and that's kind of the mindset that this offense has.
- 5:51Speaker 3: So it's not only... The technical aspect of understanding, hey,
- 5:55Speaker 3: when guys are moving, what do we do? And having
- 5:57Speaker 3: the answers right away because of all the preparation that
- 5:59Speaker 3: they're doing. But it's also the nastiness and the physicality.
- 6:03Speaker 3: So that's the part that's even more impressive to me.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And is all of that preparation why they're able to
- 6:09Speaker 1: communicate and change assignments after the snap so effectively? Yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Yeah, I think so, because you can't you can't really
- 6:15Speaker 3: talk like there's a little bit. You have a mouthpiece
- 6:17Speaker 3: and you kind of hear like over, over. You hear
- 6:18Speaker 3: like a muffled, like if you hear a scream from
- 6:20Speaker 3: the guy next to you, kind of think like, oh,
- 6:22Speaker 3: something's going on. But you do just kind of have
- 6:24Speaker 3: to know. And that's Trout's big thing. And that's really
- 6:27Speaker 3: why offensive line play is becoming harder and harder, because
- 6:31Speaker 3: it's not only physicality, but now you're dealing with all
- 6:33Speaker 3: these moving variables where 10, even just 10 years ago.
- 6:36Speaker 3: It was like, hey, you're going to you're going to
- 6:37Speaker 3: go from across to the guy across from you. That's
- 6:39Speaker 3: who you're going to go against. And he's going to
- 6:41Speaker 3: play right into you. And let's see if you're stronger.
- 6:43Speaker 3: That is not the game anymore. There's there is some
- 6:45Speaker 3: of that. Don't get me wrong, but it is so
- 6:47Speaker 3: much more complex for offensive line. And especially when you
- 6:50Speaker 3: have an offensive line that, you know, for the most part,
- 6:53Speaker 3: you know, you got some new faces, you got a
- 6:55Speaker 3: new coach. And so that would you would expect that.
- 6:57Speaker 3: They're kind of a little bit difficult and not be
- 6:59Speaker 3: on the same page, but yeah, it's, it's clear. I'm
- 7:02Speaker 3: every single week in the summer before they got to
- 7:04Speaker 3: go home on a Friday, they had to turn in
- 7:05Speaker 3: their test on what to do on outside zone when the,
- 7:09Speaker 3: when the three techniques spikes inside and they have to
- 7:11Speaker 3: know everything like that type of stuff pays off and
- 7:14Speaker 3: he just continues to do it. And he's going to
- 7:16Speaker 3: harp on it all week long. And like I said,
- 7:19Speaker 3: you're going to get the test. You're going to do
- 7:20Speaker 3: a million different walkthroughs. I think part of it too.
- 7:24Speaker 3: And I can't speak to what they were doing in
- 7:25Speaker 3: the past, but. inferring from what I've heard, my guess
- 7:29Speaker 3: is the walkthroughs were very true walkthroughs. The Phil Troutwine walkthroughs,
- 7:32Speaker 3: and I'm sure Buster Faulkner's walkthroughs as a whole, are
- 7:35Speaker 3: not walkthroughs. It is perfect technique. It is perfect footwork.
- 7:39Speaker 3: It is they're going to move. The guys that they're
- 7:42Speaker 3: walking through on, the bodies that are standing there, they're
- 7:44Speaker 3: not just going to stand there like this. They're going
- 7:46Speaker 3: to be like, hey, run this twist that they're running,
- 7:48Speaker 3: and I want to see you react to it in
- 7:50Speaker 3: real time. So it's not only getting that in practice.
- 7:51Speaker 3: Of course, you're going to get those reps in practice. Sure.
- 7:54Speaker 3: You're going to continue to get those reps through Friday
- 7:56Speaker 3: night walkthrough at the hotel. So I, I can tell
- 7:58Speaker 3: the preparation is there. And anytime you have that preparation
- 8:01Speaker 3: and trust of, I know all the answers to the test,
- 8:04Speaker 3: if you will. Yeah. I'm going to play a hundred
- 8:07Speaker 3: percent speed. And that gives me the confidence that I
- 8:09Speaker 3: would go out there and mall you.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I need to know how many times you in your
- 8:14Speaker 1: life being coached by Phil Troutwine heard the term, um,
- 8:17Speaker 1: Don't practice until you get it right.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Practice until you can't get it wrong.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Because my husband was also coached by the same people
- 8:23Speaker 1: that Phil Troutwine was. And our six-year-old soccer team hears
- 8:26Speaker 1: that on a very regular basis.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Yes, literally all the time. I mean, Trout. And, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 3: you hear that phrase you hear. I'm sure a lot
- 8:35Speaker 3: of people have seen him put hashtag NTT.
- 8:37Speaker 2: No talent.
- 8:38Speaker 3: No talent. Thanks. He is. And he'll write it out.
- 8:41Speaker 3: So every week, I mean, every single night. So, I mean,
- 8:43Speaker 3: this morning, the guys woke up from practice and they
- 8:45Speaker 3: probably got it last night, but they woke up from practice.
- 8:47Speaker 3: And they have their whole sheet of every single play,
- 8:50Speaker 3: the walkthrough plays to Phil Troutwine, giving them everything, a critique,
- 8:54Speaker 3: anything they need to know from that. So you also
- 8:57Speaker 3: get this instant feedback from Trout. And on that, like
- 9:00Speaker 3: right before you turn the page into all the notes,
- 9:02Speaker 3: he'll write out like a bunch of no talent things. Like, hey,
- 9:05Speaker 3: it doesn't take any talent to make sure that you're
- 9:07Speaker 3: getting in the cold tub, to make sure that you're stretching,
- 9:09Speaker 3: to make sure that I know what I need to
- 9:10Speaker 3: do when a three tech slants. Like all those little things.
- 9:14Speaker 3: It doesn't take talent. That is just, are you going
- 9:16Speaker 3: to put in the work? And that's kind of– people
- 9:18Speaker 3: are always wondering, like, what does it look like to
- 9:21Speaker 3: raise the bar in the room in terms of the
- 9:23Speaker 3: expectation for the offensive line? Like, that's an example. Like,
- 9:26Speaker 3: he is going to push you to do all those
- 9:28Speaker 3: little things. It's like, hey, if you can't physically bench,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you know, 450, you know, work there. Work to get there. But, like,
- 9:35Speaker 3: that's okay. That's fine. But anything that you can control, like,
- 9:40Speaker 3: you better be doing. And that's the expectation that's set,
- 9:43Speaker 3: and that's what's so exciting about And I think kind
- 9:46Speaker 3: of almost a question for me, knowing who he is
- 9:48Speaker 3: and being a part of watching him kind of rebuild
- 9:50Speaker 3: the offensive line room at Penn State was like, OK,
- 9:52Speaker 3: how quickly are these guys going to buy in to
- 9:55Speaker 3: that down in Florida? And the answer was right away.
- 9:59Speaker 3: And it's easy to. because of the standard that he sets,
- 10:01Speaker 3: but sometimes guys don't want to like fully buy get
- 10:05Speaker 3: after it. Like when he first got here, offensive line,
- 10:07Speaker 3: like it was not a good group and they kind of,
- 10:09Speaker 3: they weren't all the way in and it was difficult.
- 10:10Speaker 3: And so I was kind of like waiting to see,
- 10:12Speaker 3: and I'm like, wow, these guys have taken to that
- 10:13Speaker 3: right away. And it's not even just the starters, like
- 10:16Speaker 3: big Rod, Rod Kearney's getting in and he's demolishing folks.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Like you got, you got, you got backups that are
- 10:23Speaker 3: wanting to get in and take guys heads off as well. So,
- 10:25Speaker 3: I mean, you're, you're in a really good place with
- 10:27Speaker 3: where this offensive line is. Yeah. Yeah.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Let's talk a little bit more about Missouri's defense. They've
- 10:33Speaker 1: been pretty stringy against the run, only about 2.8 yards
- 10:37Speaker 1: per carry allowed, and obviously Florida's going.
- 10:39Speaker 2: To want to run the ball. When you watch them,
- 10:42Speaker 2: are they stingy.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Because their defensive line is physically winning up front, or
- 10:46Speaker 1: is it scheme, or because their linebackers are fitting the
- 10:50Speaker 1: run particularly well?
- 10:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I do think they fit the run pretty well.
- 10:54Speaker 3: Their defensive line, they do a good job of playing
- 10:57Speaker 3: as much as they move. They're pretty gap sound, and
- 11:00Speaker 3: there's not a ton of times you will see them
- 11:03Speaker 3: out of place. The times that I did see Mississippi
- 11:05Speaker 3: State be able to break off some long runs. it
- 11:08Speaker 3: was an instance of like, hey, they ran a twist,
- 11:10Speaker 3: they picked it up, and they hit it for a
- 11:12Speaker 3: big run. Whether that be like an interior twist, whether
- 11:15Speaker 3: that be like, hey, the tackle went and the end
- 11:18Speaker 3: looped inside and they completely picked it up and they
- 11:20Speaker 3: were able to just– there was nothing on the right
- 11:22Speaker 3: side of the line of scrimmage and they could just run.
- 11:24Speaker 3: So I think that's the biggest thing. Like when I
- 11:27Speaker 3: see them play straight up, they're fairly stout. But what's
- 11:30Speaker 3: so different about the scheme they're going to see– and
- 11:33Speaker 3: it was kind of like almost difficult for me to watch.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Even like– because the Mississippi State offensive scheme could not
- 11:39Speaker 3: be further and just different from the Florida scheme. Like
- 11:42Speaker 3: it's just a world– so they're going from one world
- 11:45Speaker 3: against this like ultra-spread RPO offense where it's like Mississippi
- 11:49Speaker 3: State wants to spread you out as far as possible
- 11:51Speaker 3: to now like a lot of– there's a lot of
- 11:53Speaker 3: different condensed looks and a lot of motion and all
- 11:56Speaker 3: these little things that Buster Faulkner throws at you. And
- 11:59Speaker 3: he's going to try. to stretch you, stretch you outside zone.
- 12:02Speaker 3: They're obviously going to hit you with the counter run
- 12:04Speaker 3: scheme and pull guys. But I think the hardest thing
- 12:08Speaker 3: for this Mizzou defense is going to be trusting your keys. Like,
- 12:13Speaker 3: you know, every single time you have to read your keys.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Like when this guy comes in motion, I have rules
- 12:17Speaker 3: as a defender that I have to go through. And
- 12:20Speaker 3: Buster Faulkner knows those rules, and he's going to try
- 12:21Speaker 3: to expose those rules. But overall, I've seen a fairly
- 12:26Speaker 3: sound defense. But, you know, everybody looks sound until you
- 12:30Speaker 3: go against Buster Faulkner. So that's what I'm most excited
- 12:32Speaker 3: to see because it really is difficult. When I watch it,
- 12:35Speaker 3: I'm like, are you kidding me? Like that looked like
- 12:37Speaker 3: outside zone for two seconds until it wasn't. That looked
- 12:40Speaker 3: like counter for two seconds until it wasn't. And that's
- 12:43Speaker 3: what's hard. Like I have to– When I see an
- 12:46Speaker 3: offensive lineman pull and I'm a linebacker, like I got
- 12:48Speaker 3: to respect that, especially it's not only like the fact
- 12:51Speaker 3: that you're just running it when you run it at
- 12:53Speaker 3: the highest level like this offense is running it. Then
- 12:56Speaker 3: I really have to respect when you're pulling two guys
- 12:58Speaker 3: on counter and be like, hey, we got to haul
- 13:00Speaker 3: our butts because they've been running counter down our throat. Oh, wait,
- 13:03Speaker 3: here we come back the other way with a little
- 13:05Speaker 3: arrow route into the flat and they're out of there.
- 13:08Speaker 3: So I think that's what's difficult. But, I mean, overall,
- 13:10Speaker 3: you know, I have been, you know, I thought it was,
- 13:12Speaker 3: I wouldn't say overly impressed with their front seven. I
- 13:16Speaker 3: think it's decent. I do think Dayton Hopkins, number 10. Yeah.
- 13:19Speaker 3: You do face a real dude off of the edge.
- 13:22Speaker 3: I think he's sitting at like six sacks. Very bendy,
- 13:25Speaker 3: very active with his hands. So Bryce Leffert, Bryce Lovett,
- 13:29Speaker 3: Ameke Gorgi, we've been talking about. Seeing them, you know,
- 13:32Speaker 3: against some high tier pass rushers here is an opportunity
- 13:35Speaker 3: to face one of those. I will say for the
- 13:38Speaker 3: most part, you don't see a ton of like true
- 13:42Speaker 3: drop back. It's not like Aaron Files getting back there
- 13:44Speaker 3: and dropping back 20, you know, 25 times in a game.
- 13:47Speaker 3: That's not the buster fuck their offense. So I think
- 13:49Speaker 3: that's part of it, too. That helps an offensive line.
- 13:51Speaker 3: where if you feel like, hey, we're going to have
- 13:54Speaker 3: to drop back 25, 30 times, there's a little bit
- 13:56Speaker 3: more stress on me. And I'll tell you what, as
- 13:59Speaker 3: an offensive lineman, if you tell me I get to
- 14:01Speaker 3: run in this offense where I get to be physical,
- 14:03Speaker 3: I get to move, and you're putting me in situations
- 14:05Speaker 3: where I don't have to be in a full-on pass
- 14:08Speaker 3: pro set and do 30 reps against this guy where
- 14:10Speaker 3: he can start to time me up and set me
- 14:12Speaker 3: up for moves, I'm going to be really happy and
- 14:15Speaker 3: be in a good place. So I say that, but
- 14:17Speaker 3: I have a feeling they're going to try to scheme it. So, hey,
- 14:19Speaker 3: Hopkins doesn't even get too many opportunities to really get
- 14:22Speaker 3: those type of rushes, you know, against our offensive tackles.
- 14:25Speaker 3: But no, I'm excited to see how this Mizzou defense responds.
- 14:29Speaker 3: And I think everybody in college football is kind of
- 14:31Speaker 3: just excited to see, hey, it's kind of like, hey,
- 14:33Speaker 3: can Buster Faulkner do this again for another week straight
- 14:36Speaker 3: and just just punish you with the run game?
- 14:39Speaker 1: We're going to take a quick break from this interview
- 14:42Speaker 1: with Landon to talk to you about something really exciting.
- 14:45Speaker 1: We are now available on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. For
- 14:51Speaker 1: more than a year, you guys have sent me messages
- 14:52Speaker 1: asking if there was an audio option for listening to
- 14:55Speaker 1: the show, and now there is. So if you want
- 14:57Speaker 1: to listen back to back to back to back as
- 14:59Speaker 1: you drive into Gainesville on game day, you can do that.
- 15:02Speaker 2: It makes it a little bit easier to listen to
- 15:03Speaker 2: at work.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Um, so if there's a platform that we're not on though,
- 15:07Speaker 1: that we should be, let us know, let me down,
- 15:10Speaker 1: know down in the comments or reach out to me
- 15:12Speaker 1: on X or somewhere else. And we can try and
- 15:14Speaker 1: make that happen for you, but make sure you are
- 15:16Speaker 1: subscribed Apple podcast, Spotify, wherever you get your audio listens.
- 15:21Speaker 1: We appreciate you guys telling us that's something you wanted
- 15:23Speaker 1: and we're trying to make it happen for you. You know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: I've been kind of referring to this like I think
- 15:29Speaker 1: each game, each SEC game Florida's played so far presents
- 15:32Speaker 1: kind of a different type of litmus test. Like the
- 15:34Speaker 1: Auburn litmus test is like, how do we do against
- 15:37Speaker 1: the other first year coaches in the league? Did we
- 15:39Speaker 1: make the best hire of those available? And I think
- 15:42Speaker 1: the answer was yes. Like we're further along than Auburn was.
- 15:45Speaker 1: And that's why we won that game. And then the
- 15:47Speaker 1: Ole Miss game is kind of like, how far are
- 15:49Speaker 1: we from where we want to be on the national stage?
- 15:51Speaker 1: Like how far are we from some of these top
- 15:53Speaker 1: tiered SEC programs? And you know, we got our answer
- 15:56Speaker 1: on that not far on Saturday, but this to me
- 16:00Speaker 1: is almost more of a maturity litmus test. Like you
- 16:04Speaker 1: have had, you are no longer hunting people. You are
- 16:07Speaker 1: the hunted. You are no longer flying under the radar.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Everybody has you, you know, front and center. You're getting
- 16:13Speaker 1: all the press clippings. Can you be mature enough to
- 16:16Speaker 1: ignore all of it, figure out where your deficiencies are
- 16:18Speaker 1: and continue to grow? And I think maybe even though
- 16:21Speaker 1: I don't know that Missouri is the best opponent Florida's
- 16:23Speaker 1: faced so far, I think that that maybe is the
- 16:25Speaker 1: toughest test so far.
- 16:28Speaker 2: But let's talk a little bit.
- 16:30Speaker 1: Ole Miss, or excuse me, Mizzou has a decent run D,
- 16:33Speaker 1: better than Ole Miss did, better than Auburn. If you're
- 16:36Speaker 1: their defensive coordinator, What poison are you choosing? Are you
- 16:41Speaker 1: committing extra bodies to stop Jaden Baugh and Duke Clark
- 16:45Speaker 1: and live with Aaron Filo throwing behind you? Or can
- 16:49Speaker 1: you realistically defend Florida with normal numbers in the box?
- 16:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I think you have to. You have to commit
- 16:56Speaker 3: an extra defender and say, hey, we have to slow
- 16:58Speaker 3: down this rushing attack. I don't think there's any question
- 17:01Speaker 3: about that because you come to this and that's what
- 17:04Speaker 3: Florida has eaten on. And that's why everything off of
- 17:06Speaker 3: it works so well. Again, like all of this play action, boot,
- 17:10Speaker 3: all that type of stuff off of the outside zone game.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Wouldn't work as well if you weren't, you know, running
- 17:15Speaker 3: outside zone so well and so significantly. So, yeah, I
- 17:19Speaker 3: definitely think you have to. And if I'm a defensive coordinator,
- 17:21Speaker 3: I'm saying, hey, I do want to try to get
- 17:23Speaker 3: into a situation where Aaron Philo has to drop back
- 17:26Speaker 3: and beat us with his arm. And I think it
- 17:29Speaker 3: generally always like sounds good. Like, hey, yeah, we'll just
- 17:31Speaker 3: commit another guy and we're going to stop the run.
- 17:33Speaker 3: But there's a reason no one has been able to
- 17:35Speaker 3: do that. And you also, you got to think about
- 17:37Speaker 3: the fact that you do have some playmakers. Like you've
- 17:39Speaker 3: got some playmakers out at wide receiver. It's not just
- 17:42Speaker 3: Clark and ball. It's the fact that like, Hey, we've
- 17:45Speaker 3: started to leave guys one-on-one and Aaron Filo's not inept
- 17:49Speaker 3: in any shape or form. Like he could still sling it.
- 17:51Speaker 3: He's got some really good passes. Yes. He's been at
- 17:54Speaker 3: times inconsistent, but that, that would be what I would
- 17:57Speaker 3: say though. You do need to try your best and say, Hey,
- 18:00Speaker 3: we will put an extra hat in there. But it's difficult.
- 18:03Speaker 3: These running backs are really good at hitting cutback lanes,
- 18:06Speaker 3: because I think part of this, too, is like when
- 18:07Speaker 3: you see outside zone, when you see counter, you want
- 18:09Speaker 3: to almost over pursue as a defender. And it's like, hey,
- 18:13Speaker 3: it's not only do we we might have a pass
- 18:15Speaker 3: scheme off of that, but it's also like, hey, these
- 18:17Speaker 3: running backs are great at setting things up in terms
- 18:20Speaker 3: of like pressing their angles. And if they see something
- 18:22Speaker 3: open backside, they are not afraid to cut it. Like
- 18:24Speaker 3: there's some running backs that are just like, Hey, I'm
- 18:26Speaker 3: going to hit the hole. That's neither of these two
- 18:28Speaker 3: running backs. Like they're very good at hitting the hole
- 18:30Speaker 3: when it's there, but they'll also find a hole elsewhere
- 18:32Speaker 3: if it opens up. So I think that's, what's going
- 18:35Speaker 3: to be difficult, difficult for this Mizzou defense. And, you know, look,
- 18:38Speaker 3: I obviously Mississippi state, has run the ball fairly well.
- 18:42Speaker 3: And I think the Mizzou defense definitely did a good
- 18:44Speaker 3: job against them. And the difficult part about that aspect is,
- 18:48Speaker 3: like I said, they spread you out and they want
- 18:49Speaker 3: to give light boxes and, you know, kind of make
- 18:52Speaker 3: you run against that. And, you know, there were times
- 18:54Speaker 3: where Mizzou missed a couple tackles and there was times
- 18:55Speaker 3: where they made some great plays up front where their
- 18:57Speaker 3: defensive line was really, really stout. But I look across,
- 19:01Speaker 3: you know, the board and I say, hey, I don't
- 19:02Speaker 3: think you've played a rushing attack even close to this.
- 19:05Speaker 3: So now here's the challenge of that. And then within that, too, again,
- 19:10Speaker 3: like you start to really commit to the run and
- 19:13Speaker 3: that's when Buster Faulkner hits you with, yeah, I'm going
- 19:15Speaker 3: to make it look that way for a second and
- 19:16Speaker 3: a half. And then here we go. We're off the
- 19:18Speaker 3: gate with a play action boot back the other way, or,
- 19:20Speaker 3: you know, a million different things, something that we probably
- 19:22Speaker 3: haven't even seen yet. It's going to be showcased on Saturday.
- 19:25Speaker 3: So that's, that's the most difficult part.
- 19:28Speaker 1: They threw the ball to Jaden Baugh so much this
- 19:30Speaker 1: summer that I'm so interested to see when that pops.
- 19:33Speaker 1: And Eric Singleton is off the injured list for the
- 19:36Speaker 1: first time since week one, so I'm kind of excited
- 19:39Speaker 1: to see how he does as well. But I thought
- 19:41Speaker 1: one of the most interesting things you talked about, that
- 19:43Speaker 1: it is both backs. You know, bog gets so much
- 19:46Speaker 1: attention and rightfully so, but you've been extremely complimentary of
- 19:50Speaker 1: Duke Clark as well from an offensive line perspective. How
- 19:54Speaker 1: much harder is it on a defense when the second
- 19:57Speaker 1: back coming into the game doesn't give.
- 20:00Speaker 2: You a break at all?
- 20:02Speaker 3: Oh, I mean, it gets it gets really difficult. And look,
- 20:04Speaker 3: Duke Clark, he'll he'll put his shoulder through your chest, too.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Like he gets vertical. And I love that about he'll
- 20:10Speaker 3: run through your face. But obviously he could take off
- 20:13Speaker 3: for 60 plus yards. It's when you got a one
- 20:15Speaker 3: to punch like that, when you have the best running
- 20:17Speaker 3: back in college football and then Duke Clark right behind
- 20:19Speaker 3: him that I think people are going to be really
- 20:21Speaker 3: excited about. Once Bob, you're already really excited about it.
- 20:23Speaker 3: But once ball leaves, it's like, hey, we we got
- 20:25Speaker 3: we got another one. We're going to go ahead and reload.
- 20:27Speaker 3: It's like, ah, this, it just makes it a nightmare
- 20:30Speaker 3: for a defense. Cause a lot of times when that
- 20:31Speaker 3: top guy goes out, it's like, all right, we get
- 20:33Speaker 3: a breather. When this guy gets eight carries a game,
- 20:37Speaker 3: it's like, all right, those six day cares, we get
- 20:38Speaker 3: a blow and it's going to be a little bit simpler.
- 20:40Speaker 3: It doesn't get that much easier when Duke Clark's in
- 20:42Speaker 3: the game. And it just provides another variable that you
- 20:46Speaker 3: have to prepare for. So that's another reason why, you know,
- 20:49Speaker 3: I think the biggest thing, everybody's going to talk about
- 20:51Speaker 3: ball and the run scheme and the offensive line and
- 20:53Speaker 3: their mulling guys. I think the two biggest X factors
- 20:57Speaker 3: besides the obvious things is. duke clark and just how
- 21:00Speaker 3: fantastic his vision is how physical of a runner is
- 21:03Speaker 3: and how he can pop some big runs and then
- 21:05Speaker 3: the the blocking from your tight ends i think those
- 21:07Speaker 3: two things of duke clark and the blocking from the
- 21:09Speaker 3: tight ends are two things that should be talked about
- 21:12Speaker 3: a lot more nationally when florida is brought up because
- 21:14Speaker 3: that's another reason why it's working so well like if
- 21:16Speaker 3: you don't good good blocking from your tight ends good
- 21:19Speaker 3: luck having a successful run scheme especially counter or outside zone,
- 21:23Speaker 3: like two things where you're going to either have your
- 21:25Speaker 3: tight ends getting out blocking in space. You're going to
- 21:27Speaker 3: have to have them seal guys in, or you're going
- 21:28Speaker 3: to have to have them pull as well. Like they
- 21:31Speaker 3: better be good. And they have been very, very good.
- 21:33Speaker 3: So they deserve a lot of credit within that as well.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Well, and you know, I, I agree with you.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I don't think the blocking is getting nearly the attention
- 21:40Speaker 1: outside of, you know, those that are really watching Florida
- 21:43Speaker 1: on a very regular basis. Talk about the mentality of
- 21:47Speaker 1: an offense that that blocks like this, like outside the scheme,
- 21:51Speaker 1: when you have got tight ends willing to, and wide
- 21:55Speaker 1: receivers too, willing to block in the way that they
- 21:57Speaker 1: are for Florida, what does that tell you about the
- 21:59Speaker 1: mental makeup of this team?
- 22:01Speaker 3: Yeah, it tells me John Summerall came in and he
- 22:04Speaker 3: challenged this program to be completely different. And we heard
- 22:08Speaker 3: about it from the weight room and all those things.
- 22:10Speaker 3: But he's a psychopath in the best way possible. And
- 22:13Speaker 3: I think they've responded incredibly well. Because it's clear to me,
- 22:17Speaker 3: he challenged it. Like, he wants to be a punch
- 22:19Speaker 3: you in your mouth. Once again, you know, work the cut.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Work the cut. I love that. That mentality, I know.
- 22:25Speaker 3: It gave me chills. Whenever I see, like, a really good, like,
- 22:28Speaker 3: speech from a coach. I get chills every single time.
- 22:31Speaker 3: John Summerall gives me chills. Like it's just a different mentality.
- 22:35Speaker 3: And when, and the biggest thing is like, you can
- 22:37Speaker 3: talk about it all off season. You can do it
- 22:38Speaker 3: in fall camp and talk about it. But once you
- 22:41Speaker 3: actually go out there and do it and you do
- 22:43Speaker 3: work the cut and you beat the crap out of someone.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Like the confidence that then like the belief John Summer
- 22:48Speaker 3: was like, see, I told you, you can wear these
- 22:50Speaker 3: dudes down. You can out physical them, make them quit.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Like when you start to feel that, like I made it,
- 22:56Speaker 3: I made a team quit. Like Ole Miss didn't want
- 22:58Speaker 3: no more. They did not want any more. You know,
- 23:01Speaker 3: the euphoric feeling that comes over an offensive lineman, a
- 23:04Speaker 3: tight end group, even wide receivers. Like, that's why it's contagious.
- 23:07Speaker 3: And you see everybody out there blocking their butts off
- 23:10Speaker 3: because it's like, hey, I want to get put up
- 23:13Speaker 3: in the team room on the big screen. And I
- 23:15Speaker 3: guarantee you these blocks are getting shown like they're everybody's
- 23:18Speaker 3: celebrating what this what this squad is doing in the
- 23:21Speaker 3: run game. And that becomes contagious. And that says, hey,
- 23:24Speaker 3: I want to get on it, too. I want to
- 23:26Speaker 3: be involved in this as well. And it just it
- 23:28Speaker 3: makes it it makes it so easy for that to
- 23:31Speaker 3: kind of leak over into every single guy. I'll tell
- 23:34Speaker 3: you what, Harris hasn't gotten enough love either for what
- 23:36Speaker 3: he's got. I, you know, cause everybody's really excited about
- 23:40Speaker 3: Bryce Lovett and a Mecca was kind of a question.
- 23:41Speaker 3: It's been, Oh, he's been awesome. And you know, everybody,
- 23:44Speaker 3: she just Shanahan has been balling, but I feel like
- 23:45Speaker 3: he's the one that's obviously been here for a while.
- 23:47Speaker 3: And it's like, Hey, he's, he's been doing his thing.
- 23:50Speaker 3: So it's, it's very exciting. Everybody I talked to that
- 23:53Speaker 3: watches film, we've like all agreed, like it's not even close.
- 23:56Speaker 3: The most fun film to watch every single week. Everybody's like,
- 23:59Speaker 3: I want to cut on the Florida offense. It's, it's
- 24:01Speaker 3: not even, it's really not even close because of just
- 24:03Speaker 3: everything that they do, not only schematics wise, but also
- 24:06Speaker 3: just the mentality of, that the squad has, it jumps
- 24:09Speaker 3: off of the film.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Well, I'll tell you what, Florida fans deserve this after
- 24:12Speaker 1: the last four years of purgatory that we have all
- 24:15Speaker 1: been in. We talked a little bit about the no
- 24:18Speaker 1: talent things. And, you know, I love the way that
- 24:21Speaker 1: Phil presented that. And he honestly, he used it on
- 24:23Speaker 1: our fan base last week. He was telling everybody like
- 24:25Speaker 1: no talent things, get in the stands early, be loud,
- 24:28Speaker 1: you know, disrupt the third downs.
- 24:30Speaker 2: Like he was schooling all of us on that as well.
- 24:32Speaker 1: But when you watch on Saturday, What's going to tell
- 24:37Speaker 1: you early whether Florida's offensive line is winning that chess
- 24:41Speaker 1: match against Missouri?
- 24:45Speaker 3: I would say a lack of negative plays, which we
- 24:48Speaker 3: really haven't seen many of. Like you look and there's
- 24:50Speaker 3: not many TFLs to speak of. Sure. With how often
- 24:54Speaker 3: this front moves and the combination of like what Mizzou
- 24:57Speaker 3: presents as a defense and also the little bit of
- 25:00Speaker 3: we talking about like reading your own newspaper clippings. Do
- 25:04Speaker 3: you rest on your laurels a little bit, and do
- 25:06Speaker 3: you get punched in the mouth? That's what I'd be
- 25:07Speaker 3: looking for. If this Florida team comes out and just
- 25:10Speaker 3: straight up, I see them look exactly how they looked
- 25:13Speaker 3: against Ole Miss, and I see the little details where
- 25:15Speaker 3: they move, and the guys are doing exactly what they
- 25:17Speaker 3: need to do when the problem is presented. Oh, there
- 25:20Speaker 3: we go. I saw that a million times on the test.
- 25:22Speaker 3: I saw that a million times in practice. Trout repped
- 25:24Speaker 3: it over and over. Here we go. That's what will
- 25:27Speaker 3: tell me. But I think the biggest overall indicator would
- 25:30Speaker 3: be lack of negative plays, which you really have not
- 25:32Speaker 3: had much of. But as long as I don't see that,
- 25:35Speaker 3: that would lead me to believe that this is going
- 25:37Speaker 3: to be the same group that you have seen in
- 25:39Speaker 3: weeks past.
- 25:40Speaker 2: All right. Four games into the season, Florida's 4-0.
- 25:43Speaker 1: They opened in July as like the over-under on win
- 25:47Speaker 1: total was six and a half. It got moved at
- 25:49Speaker 1: seven and a half. And then before the season started,
- 25:52Speaker 1: after Auburn, it got moved to.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Eight and a half.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Yesterday, it got moved to nine and a half. What's
- 25:57Speaker 1: the ceiling on this team? And what do you think
- 25:59Speaker 1: is the outcome on Saturday?
- 26:02Speaker 3: Well, first off, I think they are going to go in.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I think they're going to punish Mizzou. I think it's
- 26:06Speaker 3: a Mizzou team that some people say, I don't know
- 26:08Speaker 3: exactly why they're ranked at this moment. But I think
- 26:12Speaker 3: they're going to get full on punishment from Buster Faulkner,
- 26:16Speaker 3: John Summerall, the entire crew. you look at this, you
- 26:19Speaker 3: obviously get the South Carolina and then you go into
- 26:23Speaker 3: what is the gauntlet. Now you get a, you get
- 26:24Speaker 3: the bi-week before, before that Georgia game, but Texas, Georgia
- 26:27Speaker 3: back to back with the bi-week in between. That's, that's
- 26:31Speaker 3: where it's going to be like, like, you know, you
- 26:33Speaker 3: steal one of those, you go one in one in that.
- 26:36Speaker 3: And by God, it's going to get crazy down in Gainesville. Like,
- 26:39Speaker 3: you know, I don't think anybody's– I would not expect
- 26:41Speaker 3: Florida coming away. I'm not saying, you know, maybe some
- 26:43Speaker 3: people are undefeated.
- 26:45Speaker 1: But, I mean, you just– Which has never happened in
- 26:48Speaker 1: Florida's like 125 years of playing college football, by the way.
- 26:52Speaker 3: Wow. I didn't know that. Neither of the Natty teams
- 26:55Speaker 3: were undefeated?
- 26:55Speaker 2: Neither of the Natty teams were undefeated.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Wow. Okay.
- 26:59Speaker 1: All right. 06 lost to Auburn. 08 is Ole Miss.
- 27:03Speaker 1: That's where the, like, promise speech comes from. And 96,
- 27:08Speaker 1: they lost to Florida State at the end of the
- 27:10Speaker 1: year and then avenged it in the national title game,
- 27:13Speaker 1: beat them 52-20. And the 0-9 team went undefeated in
- 27:18Speaker 1: the regular season and lost in the SEC championship game,
- 27:23Speaker 1: so then never made it to the natty that year.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Holy cow. Wow. But wait, it's at Texas and at Georgia.
- 27:31Speaker 2: It's well, it's at Texas and it's in Atlanta.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Cause that game is generally always played in Jacksonville, but
- 27:36Speaker 1: the stadium's under renovation. So I don't know why they
- 27:39Speaker 1: didn't choose to do Athens and Gainesville. They absolutely should
- 27:42Speaker 1: have in the nineties when the stadium got renovated, they
- 27:44Speaker 1: did it that way. I think every generation should get
- 27:46Speaker 1: to experience between the hedges and in the swamp once,
- 27:49Speaker 1: but They didn't pull me.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And so, you know, it's in Atlanta.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I hate, by the way, a game like that where
- 27:56Speaker 3: it's Florida and Georgia. I hate the fact that it's
- 27:58Speaker 3: not going to be on a college campus. That makes
- 28:00Speaker 3: me angry.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Well, I'll tell you what.
- 28:01Speaker 1: You need to make it down to Jacksonville one time
- 28:04Speaker 1: when it is there because it is.
- 28:06Speaker 2: One of the coolest things ever.
- 28:07Speaker 1: The entire stadium, the way they do the tickets, is
- 28:09Speaker 1: split exactly 50-50. So each end zone is half red
- 28:13Speaker 1: and black, half orange and blue, all the way around.
- 28:15Speaker 1: It starts out really hot. It's a 3.30 kick always.
- 28:18Speaker 1: By the time the game is over, though, it's freezing
- 28:21Speaker 1: and windy off the river. People show up on Wednesday
- 28:24Speaker 1: to start their tailgating. There's an RV city that gets
- 28:27Speaker 1: set up. I am a fan of it always, staying
- 28:30Speaker 1: in Jacksonville. Now this Atlanta stuff, not a fan of that.
- 28:35Speaker 3: I feel, all right, I'm going to have to make
- 28:36Speaker 3: it down for one of those once we get back
- 28:38Speaker 3: to Jacksonville. That sounds like a plan. But look, yeah,
- 28:40Speaker 3: I think Penn and two is very much obviously in
- 28:43Speaker 3: the grasp when you look at this, but you go
- 28:45Speaker 3: 11 and one, you split one of those. Like I said,
- 28:47Speaker 3: I think people are going to start to really, really
- 28:50Speaker 3: talk here. And I mean, Texas has been tested. I've
- 28:53Speaker 3: seen Georgia up to this point, you know, with what
- 28:55Speaker 3: happened to Oklahoma, it kind of fell off the rails there. So,
- 28:59Speaker 3: you know, you haven't truly had a test if you're Georgia,
- 29:01Speaker 3: but I do look at them as one of these juggernauts,
- 29:03Speaker 3: but look, Florida, proven team in college football. I know
- 29:08Speaker 3: you can say Texas because they had the Ohio State battle.
- 29:09Speaker 3: Ohio State looks like a good squad and went to
- 29:12Speaker 3: Tennessee and battled. That's going to be a gritty win.
- 29:15Speaker 3: Texas deserves that. But just what Florida has done up
- 29:19Speaker 3: to this point, I don't know. The door closed shut.
- 29:23Speaker 3: They leave no room for question. I think this Mizzou
- 29:26Speaker 3: game is so big for the reason of like, People
- 29:29Speaker 3: after Ole Miss like, OK, we believe it was like, OK,
- 29:32Speaker 3: you beat Auburn. Auburn kind of sucks. Let's see. It
- 29:34Speaker 3: was like, oh, we believe this is the real deal.
- 29:36Speaker 3: But now, as you said earlier, how do you do
- 29:39Speaker 3: when you are now? the hunted how do you do
- 29:41Speaker 3: how do you do when you're the top dog now
- 29:43Speaker 3: the good news is that you get to go in
- 29:44Speaker 3: those two games and you're probably going to be the
- 29:45Speaker 3: underdog in both of them so you still get to
- 29:47Speaker 3: have that yeah which is awesome that's definitely going to
- 29:49Speaker 3: help you out but uh But, yeah, listen, I'm excited
- 29:53Speaker 3: to follow. You know me. I'm going to do a
- 29:55Speaker 3: film breakdown every week. It's probably going to keep me
- 29:56Speaker 3: in the run game, and I'm going to enjoy watching
- 29:59Speaker 3: what is the most exciting offense in college football. All right.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Well, I love it.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Tell everybody where they can check out your work, find
- 30:04Speaker 1: you on social media, all the things.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Yeah, you can find me, Landon Tangwall. It's T-E-N-G-W-A-L-L on Twitter.

- 30:18Speaker 3: We'll cover the heck out of it, and we'll be
- 30:20Speaker 3: going deep into the playoffs too, which I don't know.
- 30:23Speaker 3: There might be a game in Gainesville. Hopefully not, actually.
- 30:26Speaker 3: Hopefully not. Hopefully you got a bye week or something
- 30:29Speaker 3: like that. I don't know.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I might be okay with not having a bye week
- 30:32Speaker 1: to get to host a playoff game in Gainesville.
- 30:34Speaker 3: It'd be worth it.
- 30:36Speaker 2: It would be worth it. You would have to come
- 30:37Speaker 2: down for that one for sure. But all right. Well,
- 30:40Speaker 2: we appreciate you. I'm sure we will be talking to
- 30:41Speaker 2: you soon.
