- 0:03SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the Seeking Approval Podcast.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: I'm Dr.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: Chris Smelzer from Iliad Baptist Church.
- 0:08SPEAKER_01: You know, life moves fast, and faith is not meant to be rushed.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: I want to take some time and slow down with you and have some honest conversations from the Word of God about daily life.
- 0:20SPEAKER_01: So join me here today on Seeking Approval.
- 0:31SPEAKER_02: Welcome back to Seeking Approval in this series where we're looking at the clothing, the hair, the makeup, the jewelry of the video that we had presented to you.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: I want to share that video with you one more time, and I've got one more thing I'd like to discuss out of this section, and I think that will be it for uh this uh video.
- 0:49SPEAKER_02: We've got many more that we want to share with you and kind of work through together.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: But let me share this video with you one more time, and then we'll get into our discussion.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: And let me say too as well, they've got construction going on right outside of the building right now, so I hope that uh the beeping and different things isn't a distraction.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: But uh I want to discuss the the cosmetics of this.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Talking about and one point, let me get let me grab the quote real quick.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Uh the gentleman in video says you can uh look up their singers, you can look up uh their musicians, and you can see the makeup and the jewelry and the cut hair.
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: Uh talking about dealing with the makeup now.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Again, this is uh I know it seems very trivial, but there's a lot of people that struggle with this, and I want to make sure that we cover some of these things.
- 4:28SPEAKER_02: There's nothing wrong with preaching against vanity uh or or pride or sensuality or immodesty.
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: There's nothing wrong with trying to preach uh holiness and and separation from the world.
- 4:42SPEAKER_02: Uh there's nothing wrong with those things.
- 4:44SPEAKER_02: But we gotta make sure that it's biblical in the sense that we do it.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: We've got to make sure that we're right.
- 4:49SPEAKER_02: That's why I don't preach at the church that men have to wear a suit.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: That men have to wear certain things.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: I do believe that we need to direct dress and act different whenever we come to the Lord's house.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: You can go back to the Old Testament and see what the priests did whenever it was uh the day of sacrifice, whenever they would take the sacrifice out of the temple, they were told to put on their fine linens and all that.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: There's there's reasons uh for I think that we are to give our best unto God whenever we come to his house.
- 5:15SPEAKER_02: I I do believe that.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Uh but I also believe that whenever a lot of the uh the disciples and the early uh first century uh preachers and and evangelists and missionaries were out preaching, I mean, they they looked like every other man.
- 5:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, they had they had dirt under their fingernails, uh their their clothes maybe go days without being washed.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, so does the suit make us more saved?
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: No, it does not.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Does it uh is it a sign that we're trying to give our best to God?
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: So we should expect uh not only the men to give their best to God, but the women as well to give their best unto God.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: Uh now we've had women in situations where they've uh had certain surgeries and other things to where you know they you know wearing a dress was not uh something they could you know do uh other situations.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Uh does that make them less holy?
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: Well, again, we're back to the thing we talked about last time about making concessions, and if it's if it's a doctrine of God, it's there's no concessions that would be made with it.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Because the Bible, if we apply biblical principles to our life, it will make us better in every situation.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: So I you know in this in dealing with this the makeup thing, there's a few verses that we can pull out, and I've tried to grab a few of them for you uh to address this.
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: Well, first one that most people go to is Jezebel, uh one of the most notorious women that's ever lived.
- 6:33SPEAKER_02: Uh she's discussed many times from scripture from the Old Testament and in the in 2 Kings all the way to Revelation.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: She's discussed in the church of Thy Tyra.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: But in 2 Kings 9 30 it says, And when Jehu was to come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it and she painted her face and tried uh her head and looked out a window.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: So the they'll run to the part about painting her face.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: And it's if it's linked with Jezebel, it's gotta be bad.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: But we gotta we gotta stop for just a second to think.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Just because an evil person uses something or does something, does that automatically make that thing evil?
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: I don't think we can make that correlation.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: Uh there are there are plenty of people who are evil that will quote Bible scripture.
- 7:15SPEAKER_02: Does that make the Bible evil because an evil person is quoting scripture?
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: No.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: Uh whenever uh 9-11 happened many years ago.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: Back in 2001.
- 7:24SPEAKER_02: Uh all the people of you know, Congress and White House and everybody gathered on the uh the the steps there in in Washington DC, and they all sing Amazing Grace.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: You know, there's some evil people in that group that was singing.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, there was people that was, you know, voting to kill babies and for voting for same-sex marriages and everything else.
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, there's some evil things being done up there.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: I mean, one the one of the worst is the murdering of babies.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: And they're singing Amazing Grace.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: Does that mean that all of a sudden now we don't need to sing about Amazing Grace because now that has become evil because those evil people did that.
- 7:57SPEAKER_02: So we gotta make sure that we're careful about what the Bible says.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Was it was the painting of her face evil, or was it what she was trying to do with it?
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Or what they were trying to represent through it.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: I think that's where the the the situation comes in.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: Go back in uh first Kings chapter 21, verse 25.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: It says, But there was none like unto Ahab which did sell himself to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel his wife stirred.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: That's talking about whenever Ahab wanted the land and how wicked uh Jezebel was.
- 8:29SPEAKER_02: But we have a wicked person that arranged the death of a man so that her husband could get the his field wearing the paint on her face.
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: Well, go over to Jeremiah chapter 4 and verse 30.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: This is another verse that will be pulled out.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: It says, When thou when thou art spooled, what wilt thou do?
- 8:45SPEAKER_02: This is Jeremiah uh writing unto Judah.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Uh when thou art spooled, what will thou do?
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Uh though thou clotest thyself in crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with paint or painting, uh in vain shalt thou make thyself fair.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Thy lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: Listen to what Jeremiah saying to Judah.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: He didn't say there's anything wrong with wearing nice clothes and wearing jewelry and painting their face.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: He said, if you're doing it with the wrong intent and the wrong heart, he said, You're doing it in vain.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Because it doesn't mean anything.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Because at that time Judah was in a uh was in a uh a sinful place with God, but they're trying to prophetically, as he was writing to them, they're trying to spruce their sin up and and try to hide their sin through the painting of their face and the jewelry and all that.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: So he was likening it unto uh a woman who was dressed up but yet a sinful woman.
- 9:45SPEAKER_02: He doesn't say that a dressed-up woman is a sinful woman.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: He's talking about the sinful woman who is dressed up.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: He says the dressing up is in vain, it doesn't mean anything.
- 9:55SPEAKER_02: So we can take that verse in Jeremiah and separate them out right there.
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: It's not the dressing up that makes you sinful, it's the sinful woman trying to hide it through the dressing up.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: So we go back to the same question.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: It's the heart of the person, it's not the accoutrements, it's the heart of the person.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: So uh we can go on down to Ezekiel 23 and 40.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: This is another one.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: And furthermore, they have sent for men to come from afar into whom a messenger was sent, and lo, they come, for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintest thine eyes, and deckest thyself with ornaments.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: This is talking about the unfaithfulness of Samaria and Jerusalem through the imagery of these two sisters, uh Ahola and Aholobah, I think it was Aholoba.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Talking about the wickedness between this, and it talks about the painting of the eyes, as it says there, paintest uh the eyes.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Again, it's not uh the painting of the eyes that's wicked, it's the the unfaithfulness of Samaria and Jerusalem that's wicked, and they're trying to hide it.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: So does that mean that every woman that puts makeup on is trying to hide something?
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Well, I guess maybe in some form or fashion they're trying to hide something, but it's not necessarily sin.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: They may be trying to hide you know, pale skin, birthmarks, you know, wrinkles, or you know, whatever other issue they may be trying to cover up that way, but that has nothing to do with sin.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: They're just making their self presentable.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: And I would encourage you to go back over to um uh Psalm 45.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: Let me pull that one up real quick.
- 11:28SPEAKER_02: I wouldn't plan on going to Psalm 45, but let me go to Psalm 45 with you real quick, and uh we'll we'll look at what uh what this one says uh because uh this gives us a a great um example of the bride of Christ talking about and it's comparing her to uh to the woman uh talking about the bride of Christ.
- 11:47SPEAKER_02: Let me get uh to it real quick.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: And I'll go down uh uh let's go down to verse number nine.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: Uh no, let's go up to verse number eight.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: Uh no, let's go to verse number seven.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: Because uh I mean if you go over to the book of Ruth, you could look see in the book of Ruth where uh you know she was you know washed herself and made herself presentable and all those things.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: Let's go back up to verse number seven.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: It says, Thou love lovest righteousness and hatest wickedness.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: Therefore thy God had anointed thee with oil of gladness above thy fellows.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: Again, this is prophetic, but it's talking about anointing with oil.
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, the the oil uh there was so many things that oil did, not from just from treatment or uh from the smell, the odor.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's there's so many that oil did, but it's saying that God would anoint them with oil.
- 12:34SPEAKER_02: Uh but then it goes down to verse number.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: It says, All thy garments smell of myrrh and of aloes and of cassia out of the ivory places, uh, whereby they have made thee glad.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: So we have these women who now are not only smelling good, but they're they're taking care of their skin.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: They're doing things that that take care of their skin, all that.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: And I know that that this man wasn't preaching against, you know, caring for your skin and washing and all that kind of stuff, but this is going a step further when they're talking about the the aloees and the cassia and all those things.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: That's a step further than just taking care of your skin.
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Now let's go on down to uh verse number nine.
- 13:08SPEAKER_02: King's daughters were among the honorable women.
- 13:10SPEAKER_02: Upon thy right hand did stand the queen.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Now, prophetically we believe this to be the bride.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: That's the church.
- 13:17SPEAKER_02: In gold of Ophir.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Well, now we got a problem.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Because the prophetic writing of the bride of Christ now is standing in the gold of Ophir.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: She is decked out to the hilt.
- 13:33SPEAKER_02: Uh verse 10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider and climb thine ear, forget also thy people and thy father's house, so uh the king shall greatly desire thy beauty, for he is the Lord.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: Worship thou him, a daughter of Tyree uh uh shall uh be there with a gift, even among the rich, uh even the rich among the people shall uh uh treat thy favor.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: The king's daughter is all glorious within her.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Her clothing is wrought of gold.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: She shall be brought into the king in raiment of needlework.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: The virgins of her companions that follow her shall be brought into thee with gladness rejoicing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_02: They come and enter the king's palace.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: We can go on down, and we could uh read the last couple of verses, but we're talking about the bride of Christ who is decked out.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Again, this is prophetic writing.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: Wearing the gold is not bad.
- 14:17SPEAKER_02: Taking care of the skin and putting on the aloes and the and and and those things that you know make your skin shine.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: The Bible talks about making your skin shine, makes your face shine.
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: The Bible talks about those things.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: So, where do we get now to wear that all of a sudden if you're wearing makeup, you're sinful?
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: You see, because that's you really now that's an attack upon my wife.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Because my wife hairs right here.
- 14:44SPEAKER_02: So now, according to this man's preaching, my wife is now ungodly.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: My wife wears makeup.
- 14:49SPEAKER_02: According to him, my wife is ungodly.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: My wife wears jewelry.
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: She's got a necklace from her granny, she's got a necklace that my mom both passed passed away that she wears.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: She's got earrings that uh uh that you know have some very sentimental meanings to demeanure that she wears.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: She's got her wedding rings that uh very sentimental meanings that uh she wears.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: But according to this man, she's ungodly for doing that.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: So by trying to um uh preach the man-made doctrine, yes, you have taken a small group of people and encouraged them, but you've just taken a lot of people who know Jesus Christ as their Savior, and you have alienated them.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: And that's that that's an that's an issue.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: Because yes, the Bible does separate.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: The Bible does draw a line, it comes with a two-edged sword.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: Christ said, I didn't come to bring together, I come to separate, I come to divide houses, but not in anger, not in finger pointing.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: It's the saved and the lost, not who has the long hair and the short hair, who has the makeup and the no-makeup, who's wearing the gold, who's not.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Should we try, should we strive to live a holy and separated life?
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: But we've got to have guardrails on this.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: We've got to have guardrails.
- 16:04SPEAKER_02: Because if not, we'll get right back into the phariseeical preaching.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: There's some things that we ought not to do.
- 16:10SPEAKER_02: We ought not to dabble in alcohol.
- 16:12SPEAKER_02: That's that's one step closer.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: We ought not to be dabbling in drugs, that's one step closer.
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: We ought not to be dabbling in some of these things.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: The the pornography and those things.
- 16:23SPEAKER_02: I absolutely, those things I absolutely agree with.
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: But where where the guardrils have got to come is is talking about a woman that wears gold earrings or a necklace is a sinful, uh, adulterous woman.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: That's not holy, and you ain't my brother, you ain't my sister no more.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: So now you're saying that equates salvation.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: And that's the real problem.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: And all of these uh these these three videos have kind of been, you know, a little maybe a little cheeky, you know, you know, trying to not be overly uh funny, but I mean some of this stuff is just it's just ridiculous to deal with, and I almost feel kind of silly dealing with it, but it's a real thing that I have to deal with because I mean it's this is out there.
- 17:06SPEAKER_02: But the real problem is that now you're judging the salvation of a person according to something as as much as the length of hair, the type of clothing, and jewelry and makeup.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: That's not a per that's not that person's problem, that's a you problem.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: If you if you judge the heart of a man by the outward appearance, you go right back over to what God told Samuel.
- 17:31SPEAKER_02: I don't judge by the outward appearance.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And I would say that these these phariseal type preachers like this gentleman who was on this uh stage and all those that were around him that were cheering him on whenever he was degrading the women of the congregation.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: I would say a lot of those men were probably uh which they never would step foot in my church because I ain't good enough for them, and that's perfectly fine.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: Perfectly fine with me.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: But I would I would show the thing that if if if uh some of the men from my church showed up at one of their conferences like this, they'd probably be ushered out because some of them had a rough uh life before they knew Jesus Christ.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: They've got tattoos, we've got some men who were uh and some ladies who were out in drugs and alcohol and carousing around and all those things.
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: I guess they'll never be good enough.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: Especially if they've got the tattoo on them now.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: From a life of of a misspent youth.
- 18:30SPEAKER_02: Got a couple military men that uh went down a really dark road while they were in in service for our country.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: Came out, a lot of tattoos, a lot of bad memories, a lot of things to keep them up at night, but they've given her heart and life to Christ.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: So I shudder to think what what this gentleman would say to some of those men.
- 18:51SPEAKER_02: And that's why what I'll say is that God loves that person too.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: Just like he loved the adulterous woman that he stooped down and wrote in the sand, conveyed forgiveness in the sand of that adulterous woman.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: Just like he loved Nicodemus.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Just like he loves you, just like he loves me.
- 19:09SPEAKER_02: Does he love the sin?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: Does he does he love the one that uh that claims to be uh uh saved, claims to know Jesus Christ, but continues to live in sin?
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: There's plenty of preaching against that.
- 19:23SPEAKER_02: There's plenty of preaching against the lustubiousness of a man's heart.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: But I don't think makeup, gold, and a dress falls into lustubiousness.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think that falls into showing that you have a a heart that is blackened by sin and death and hell.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: So forgive me that if I don't shout along with you whenever you're degrading the women.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Forgive me if I don't uh shout along with you when you're degrading the people who come from a very dark past and have given themselves to Christ.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: Forgive me if I don't follow along with you and you condemn the maniac of Gidadera, who no doubt still left the scars of the sin that he he once lived in, but Christ clothed him and put a new cloth upon him and sent him out to teach.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Forgive me if I don't get on board with you whenever you say that that man, because he carried those uh scars or tattoos or markings of a sinful past that he can't be a Christian now today.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: Forgive me if I don't get on board with you on that and shout alongside of you.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: But I'll try to protect those that I can and protect their heart and protect their coming and their going from people like you.
- 20:41SPEAKER_02: Grace and peace to you from Gilead Baptist Church.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: Thank you for joining us today on Seeking Approval.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: You know, our faith oftentimes grows in quiet places.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: I hope today's conversation gave you something worth carrying throughout the rest of this day.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: And join me, Dr.
- 20:57SPEAKER_01: Chris Spelser, again next time as we continue thinking, learning, and walking together.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: Until then, grace and peace to you for seeking approval at Gilligan Baptist Church.
