- 0:00Speaker 1: Renting.
- 0:00Speaker 2: I was in Shelan, drove up and back from Shelana
- 0:05Speaker 2: to day.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Did you know you could surf in Shelan? Well, listening
- 0:10Speaker 1: to your show, I learned so much, Greg.
- 0:12Speaker 3: I was able to tap into the fact that got
- 0:15Speaker 3: something new going on where you can serve. And your
- 0:17Speaker 3: daughter was going to Hawaii. She's ahead of the game.
- 0:19Speaker 3: She knows how to do it. But I understand you
- 0:22Speaker 3: guys shocked a lot of them because you did a
- 0:24Speaker 3: lot better than the average American trying to surf.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We stood up and went across the wave.
- 0:29Speaker 2: So they have a wave in this pool. It overlooks
- 0:33Speaker 2: Lake Shelan. It's right above Slidewaters. Anybody who's been to
- 0:37Speaker 2: Shelan's probably been the or knows of slidewater's been there
- 0:40Speaker 2: for half a century, I think, But just in the
- 0:42Speaker 2: last five years, right above slidewaters, they've opened this thing
- 0:45Speaker 2: called Lakeview Wave and it's a city wave facility where
- 0:50Speaker 2: there's a generated wave with all this twelve thousand gallons
- 0:53Speaker 2: of water get pumped into this wave and you drop
- 0:57Speaker 2: in and it takes a benut. But it took me
- 1:01Speaker 2: a few minutes. And they have softboards and if you land.
- 1:04Speaker 2: You kind of bounce around in the wake of the
- 1:06Speaker 2: wave and get spit out the other side. But a
- 1:10Speaker 2: bunch of twenty somethings college post college people that are
- 1:14Speaker 2: the students there, they are the teachers of the students there,
- 1:17Speaker 2: are very patient with it.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Say it was fun.
- 1:18Speaker 2: It was good to get out of the rain that
- 1:20Speaker 2: was here for most of yesterday in the Seattle area.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But if every Cholanne you can surf in Cholande not
- 1:25Speaker 2: on the lake, but it's surf wavepool right above the lake.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And it was a really cool experience. But yeah, twenty
- 1:32Speaker 2: third birthday for the spins Christ. We don't know if
- 1:33Speaker 2: we're going to happen together too much more. Lifetime separates
- 1:36Speaker 2: them and put them wherever.
- 1:37Speaker 3: So yeah, to take advantage when you can, I could. Yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 3: I understand you. I'm sure you've noticed that with friends
- 1:43Speaker 3: from way back. You know, you might see them every day,
- 1:47Speaker 3: and then you only see them once every two weeks,
- 1:51Speaker 3: and now it's once a month. Now it's every three
- 1:54Speaker 3: or four months. Next you know, I only see you
- 1:55Speaker 3: once a year, man, Because life happens. People get busy,
- 1:58Speaker 3: they get jobs, they move, you name it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: It's just a thing called life.
- 2:03Speaker 2: You're right about. Life happens, and that's what's going on.
- 2:05Speaker 2: So it's now I've covered twenty five years of OTA practice.
- 2:10Speaker 2: I'm gonna miss Mike McDonald putting him out in the rain.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Saw the videos of that. I say, of course they
- 2:15Speaker 1: were out in the rain yesterday. We'll talk about that.
- 2:18Speaker 2: We'll talk about who was on the field for the
- 2:20Speaker 2: Seahawks voluntary still and the first of two groups of
- 2:24Speaker 2: three OTA practices this week and next week, and then
- 2:27Speaker 2: a mini camp June eight, nine and ten, that's the
- 2:29Speaker 2: only mandatory event for the Super Bowl champions before training
- 2:32Speaker 2: camp starts the end of July. We'll talk about who
- 2:34Speaker 2: was on the field who wasn't. Coach Mike McDonald gave
- 2:37Speaker 2: updates on those who were not and why, including a
- 2:42Speaker 2: veteran edge rusher key to their success last season on defense,
- 2:46Speaker 2: not on the field, not in the facility.
- 2:48Speaker 1: McDonald explained that as.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Well, we're gonna talk about what Jerry Depoto did yesterday
- 2:53Speaker 2: to try to smooth out this piggybacking between Luis Castillo
- 2:56Speaker 2: and Bryce Miller that pretty much on press it. I
- 2:58Speaker 2: don't know anyone in baseball has seen them a team
- 3:01Speaker 2: that is coming off of an America League Championship Series
- 3:04Speaker 2: appearance with two proven veteran starters trying to do what
- 3:07Speaker 2: the Miners are trying to do. We're gonna ask Bob Nightingale,
- 3:10Speaker 2: long time baseball reporter for USA to Die. Covered baseball
- 3:14Speaker 2: with him in the early two thousands when he was
- 3:17Speaker 2: with the USA. Today has been the president of the
- 3:18Speaker 2: Baseball Writers Association. Bob night Andingale is going to join
- 3:21Speaker 2: us at eleven o'clock. I'm gonna ask him if he's
- 3:23Speaker 2: ever even heard of a team trying to do this
- 3:26Speaker 2: what the Mariners have been trying to do. And it's
- 3:27Speaker 2: been sloppy, it's been messy, it's been ugly, and both players,
- 3:31Speaker 2: both pitchers, cas Dio and Miller don't like it.
- 3:35Speaker 1: And so Jerry de Potti yesterday tried to smooth that out.
- 3:37Speaker 2: We'll talk about that after we talked to Bob Gale
- 3:40Speaker 2: at eleven o'clock. On the text line eleven thirty. Eleven
- 3:44Speaker 2: thirty is every day on the text line we go
- 3:46Speaker 2: to the Coma Dodge text line and you guys and
- 3:48Speaker 2: gals are part of the show where you're back your
- 3:50Speaker 2: text What should day? I'll just ask it off top
- 3:52Speaker 2: of the show, what should the Mariners do with this
- 3:55Speaker 2: piggyback and keep it going? Because the results say sub
- 3:58Speaker 2: two three era couple wins, it's working.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But then you see Louis Castillo.
- 4:04Speaker 2: One of the clubhouse stalwarts and rocks, it's in fact
- 4:09Speaker 2: nicknamed the Rock, throwing his helm, throwing his glove and
- 4:13Speaker 2: equipment at the bench when he was told the other
- 4:15Speaker 2: night in Sacramento that he was out of the game
- 4:16Speaker 2: after four scoreless innings. Dan Wilson trying to talk to him,
- 4:20Speaker 2: the manager on the bench about that, and he was
- 4:22Speaker 2: a TV camera's cotton, not happy at all. By the way,
- 4:26Speaker 2: it was enough of a story that even the a's
- 4:28Speaker 2: feed picked up on it and they were talking about it.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Both sides were, and it was noticeable. So Jerry Depoto,
- 4:34Speaker 2: the team president, yesterday before the game in Sacramento, first
- 4:38Speaker 2: Dan Wilson and then pitching coach Pete Woodworth met with
- 4:41Speaker 2: Luis Caste and Bryce Miller, and then Jerry Depoto did
- 4:44Speaker 2: the same. So on fournite four to five one, what
- 4:46Speaker 2: do you think they should.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Do about this?
- 4:47Speaker 2: I'll tell you what the Poto said, but what do
- 4:48Speaker 2: you think? On the text line four nine four to
- 4:50Speaker 2: five one, Keep it going, switch it up, keep alternating
- 4:54Speaker 2: like they've been doing so far with Castillo one day
- 4:57Speaker 2: and starting and Miller relieving, and Miller are starting and
- 4:59Speaker 2: Stee are we leaving?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Scrap it all together?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Put Castelle in the bullpen. Is twenty four million dollars salary,
- 5:04Speaker 2: thirty four years old.
- 5:06Speaker 1: That's gonna work. What do you think, kriz? I would say, despite.
- 5:10Speaker 3: The awkward optics of this whole entire situation, it's been outstanding.
- 5:17Speaker 3: All right, you got results? Yeah, the results are what
- 5:19Speaker 3: we're looking for now. Offensively is where the issues have
- 5:24Speaker 3: been throughout the season. But Miller and Castillo, they have
- 5:26Speaker 3: combined for a two point one two era in those
- 5:29Speaker 3: tandem games with twenty one trackouts and only five walks,
- 5:33Speaker 3: and opponents aren't doing much against them. So while I
- 5:36Speaker 3: think the communication aspect of this thing has been a mess,
- 5:40Speaker 3: and either pitcher is really like, oh yeah, this is great,
- 5:44Speaker 3: I think that's what they have to do. They have
- 5:45Speaker 3: to find a resolution between the two parties to communicate
- 5:48Speaker 3: this is the plan going forward. This is going to
- 5:50Speaker 3: be successful. But I think they've already gotten past that point.
- 5:56Speaker 3: So maybe it's too late now, But obviously that's something
- 5:58Speaker 3: you got to go out and try. As you mentioned,
- 6:00Speaker 3: still visibly showing frustration on Monday's game after being pulled
- 6:04Speaker 3: in those four innings. I mean, he's out there doing
- 6:06Speaker 3: his thing, and now you're just you know, we're just
- 6:08Speaker 3: trying to I don't know the reason behind that. I
- 6:11Speaker 3: guess saving him. But at the same time, he's playing well,
- 6:14Speaker 3: so just keep him out there. So Bryce Miller continues
- 6:18Speaker 3: to look dominant. I like that aspect, and I guess
- 6:22Speaker 3: they're just trying to maybe perhaps they don't want to
- 6:26Speaker 3: fully convert a Steel into a believer.
- 6:29Speaker 1: We'll talk about that, so they might be trying to
- 6:31Speaker 1: save him for that. There's a reason for that. I'll
- 6:33Speaker 1: bring that up in a minute.
- 6:37Speaker 3: Yes, So right now, the Mariners, I think they believe
- 6:40Speaker 3: this is a dare I say, good problem to have, Well,
- 6:45Speaker 3: it is everything else going on.
- 6:47Speaker 2: You're right, Chris, because it they have six healthy starters,
- 6:49Speaker 2: six proven starters.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well, a lot of teams don't have four. That
- 6:52Speaker 1: is very true.
- 6:54Speaker 2: So that is to Chris's point, A really good part
- 6:57Speaker 2: of this is this is a surplus of riches. If
- 7:00Speaker 2: the only reason it's happening, of course, is Emerson Hancock
- 7:03Speaker 2: has just shoved and he did it again last night,
- 7:06Speaker 2: one hit aloud over six innings. And if he isn't
- 7:09Speaker 2: pitching the way he is, he would be back down
- 7:11Speaker 2: in Tacoma and there would be no story because Bryce
- 7:13Speaker 2: Miller will be back Lease Castill would be in his
- 7:16Speaker 2: normal slot.
- 7:17Speaker 1: And here we go.
- 7:21Speaker 2: That's exactly opposite of what, of course happened. Is Emerson
- 7:23Speaker 2: Hancock has pitched like an All star. Another one hit outing,
- 7:26Speaker 2: scoreless outing last night, and.
- 7:29Speaker 1: So here go.
- 7:30Speaker 2: You can't keep him in the rotation. Now you mentioned
- 7:33Speaker 2: the T word DENNDZ and E. I think that's the
- 7:36Speaker 2: nexus of all this. But let's first talk about what
- 7:39Speaker 2: the POTO did yesterday. He said yesterday he met with
- 7:43Speaker 2: individually Castillo and Miller separately before the game in Sacramento,
- 7:49Speaker 2: and per Adam Jude of the Seattle Times, who's down
- 7:52Speaker 2: there covering the beat for the Mariners that series at
- 7:55Speaker 2: the a's Depoto said, quote, while still not an ideal situation,
- 7:59Speaker 2: to Chris's point, I am confident that we were able
- 8:02Speaker 2: to move to more clearly communicate the current situation and
- 8:05Speaker 2: plan moving forward. The plan moving forward is the piggybacking
- 8:09Speaker 2: will continue for at least one more time through the rotation.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Miller's going to start and Castilla will come in for
- 8:15Speaker 2: him in relief on Sunday at the Yard and Soda
- 8:17Speaker 2: when the Mariners finished a three game series against Arizona.
- 8:20Speaker 2: So the alternating is going to continue. It's been Miller,
- 8:23Speaker 2: of course starting, then Castilla relieve against the White Sox.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Last time out Monday against the Ace.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Castillo started how to shout out through four innings best
- 8:30Speaker 2: started the season, and Miller pitched the final five and
- 8:34Speaker 2: Castillo was pretty upset, slamming his glove and as I said,
- 8:37Speaker 2: throwing stuff around the dugout. It was Miller's first relief
- 8:41Speaker 2: appearance on Monday in his career, a week after Castillo,
- 8:45Speaker 2: at thirty three.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Years old, had his first career relief appearance.
- 8:48Speaker 3: So these guys aren't used to this at all, of
- 8:50Speaker 3: course not these are guys. This is almost too an
- 8:54Speaker 3: NFL player getting on a team after winning a championship
- 8:57Speaker 3: and they don't win at all. You're going, oh, last
- 9:01Speaker 3: year you were on Ohio State and you won the champions.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Right, and you're on the bench Ato intent coming off
- 9:06Speaker 1: the bench.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Yeah, this is new territory. So when you look at
- 9:08Speaker 3: these pictures, they're like, what are we doing here? Yeah,
- 9:12Speaker 3: And I think the biggest thing is communication. You gotta
- 9:15Speaker 3: get ahead of it. You don't want to surprise guys. Hey,
- 9:17Speaker 3: by the way, we're trying this thing out. We're gonna
- 9:19Speaker 3: see how it works, and then you're getting pulled four
- 9:22Speaker 3: innings in because you're gonna try this new system to
- 9:24Speaker 3: try to help you long term, as opposed to getting
- 9:29Speaker 3: ahead of it.
- 9:29Speaker 1: So I think that's where they made.
- 9:30Speaker 3: The biggest mistake is not making a clear, communicated effort.
- 9:34Speaker 3: This is the plan, as opposed to, yeah, we're gonna
- 9:37Speaker 3: try this wrinkle and well, we'll see how it works
- 9:41Speaker 3: throughout the season. Yeah, they're not here for that.
- 9:43Speaker 2: The fact that the Poto met with them and separately
- 9:45Speaker 2: afterday speaks exactly to what you just said, Chris, is
- 9:47Speaker 2: that the communication was lacking and they didn't really know.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Now they know, Okay, through at least Sunday, we're gonna
- 9:52Speaker 2: do this again. But now Miller's gonna start because it's
- 9:55Speaker 2: just Brice Miller's comments. Yeah, yeah, I like it, but
- 9:59Speaker 2: I'll do it. But you know, it's what they're doing,
- 10:01Speaker 2: But I don't like it. And that was after he
- 10:03Speaker 2: threw five shot out of ednings to clips out of win.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Crazy. Yeah. Now let's also say this, this has worked.
- 10:09Speaker 2: So far to the tune of a two point two
- 10:12Speaker 2: era the numbers that ChRI cited because they played the
- 10:14Speaker 2: White Sox in the A's or I should say, wow,
- 10:17Speaker 2: they've played the White Sox in the A's maybe because
- 10:19Speaker 2: of let's try this against the Rays and the Yankees
- 10:22Speaker 2: and see how that goes.
- 10:25Speaker 1: But it may not get that far.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I think what's going on here, being around baseball since
- 10:31Speaker 2: for twenty five years be a beat writer, I think
- 10:34Speaker 2: they're showcasing Castillo in the prime between the end of
- 10:37Speaker 2: May and the beginning of July.
- 10:38Speaker 1: When it's an end of July, I should say before.
- 10:41Speaker 2: The trade deadline, you cannot trade a thirty three year old,
- 10:44Speaker 2: three time All Star with a twenty four million dollar
- 10:46Speaker 2: contract and two years left on it plus a vesting
- 10:49Speaker 2: option for twenty twenty eight. Can't trade that out of
- 10:51Speaker 2: the bullpen. So you're gonna start him and kind of
- 10:55Speaker 2: start him, and start him and kind of start him
- 10:57Speaker 2: while you have these six healthy starters waiting for either
- 11:00Speaker 2: one Castillo to just break out and just throw up
- 11:04Speaker 2: zeros no matter what role he's in, but preferably starting,
- 11:06Speaker 2: so he's being showcased as such, or if there's another
- 11:09Speaker 2: injury to the rotation, because let's face it, then the
- 11:13Speaker 2: chance of them staying with six healthy starting pitchers throughout
- 11:16Speaker 2: the rest of the season is low. That's just the
- 11:18Speaker 2: nature of the sport. And in fact, Bryce Miller of
- 11:21Speaker 2: course didn't play for the first six weeks of the
- 11:23Speaker 2: season because of his oblique injury, so the Mariners are
- 11:27Speaker 2: hedging in the meantime. But it's really hard to try
- 11:30Speaker 2: to dangle a guy with a twenty four million dollar
- 11:32Speaker 2: contract to possibly trade if he's.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Out of the bullpen, especially in long relief.
- 11:38Speaker 2: So what the photo is explaining is that he's going
- 11:41Speaker 2: to want to keep these guys all stretched out, meaning
- 11:43Speaker 2: throwing multiple four or five innings so that they can
- 11:46Speaker 2: stay on starters type workload and starters type turns every
- 11:50Speaker 2: five days, rather than send one to the bullpen. Should
- 11:54Speaker 2: be would be probably Castillo based on previous performances until lately,
- 11:59Speaker 2: and if you send him and the bullpen, then you're
- 12:00Speaker 2: shortening him and all of a sudden, his whole routine
- 12:03Speaker 2: is switched. You can't throw him out there for five
- 12:05Speaker 2: innings and alternating piggyback starts anymore, if he's been coming
- 12:08Speaker 2: out of a bullfen for one inning or ning in.
- 12:10Speaker 1: A third or whatever it is.
- 12:12Speaker 2: So that's what the POTO has been selling to Castillo
- 12:15Speaker 2: and Miller. Now, if he's really upfront with him, and
- 12:18Speaker 2: that isn't If that is in fact what the Poto's
- 12:20Speaker 2: thinking of doing, it's potentially showcasing him to trade him.
- 12:23Speaker 2: He would tell Castillo that, and that part would have
- 12:26Speaker 2: been part of yesterday's conversation. Of course, these are all
- 12:29Speaker 2: suppositions on my part, and if they're not showcasing him
- 12:32Speaker 2: to trade him, then that point is moot. But Chris,
- 12:35Speaker 2: to Chris's point, let's communicate this and lay it out
- 12:38Speaker 2: on the table what we're doing, and if they are
- 12:40Speaker 2: in fact trying to trade him and trying.
- 12:41Speaker 1: To do it out of a starter role, tell Castillo that.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Of course, Castillo's thinking, Okay, there's a possibility that a
- 12:50Speaker 2: contending team gets an injury between now and July thirty
- 12:54Speaker 2: first to trade deadline and needs a starting frontline capable third,
- 12:57Speaker 2: three time all start starting pitcher would be willing to
- 13:00Speaker 2: pick up the pro ration of my salary, roughly half
- 13:03Speaker 2: a year of twenty four million, another twenty four million
- 13:05Speaker 2: next year, a vesting option for twenty twenty eight. If
- 13:09Speaker 2: all that happens, what would the Mariners get in return
- 13:11Speaker 2: of that'd be pretty low. Right, you're not talking top
- 13:14Speaker 2: prospects or guys that could help you right now. If
- 13:17Speaker 2: you're trying to unload that much money, you're not going
- 13:19Speaker 2: to get much in return.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Of course, the Mariners could say, we'll keep some of
- 13:24Speaker 2: his contract, we know this is a weird situation, and
- 13:28Speaker 2: we'll pay two thirds or three fourths, and that happens
- 13:30Speaker 2: a lot. But at its surface, without the Mariners absorbing money,
- 13:34Speaker 2: which they are in the real business is doing. They
- 13:36Speaker 2: make money, but they don't exactly spend it, and spend
- 13:39Speaker 2: it on players.
- 13:39Speaker 1: They don't have. So short of that, they I.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Think need to showcase him as a starter as much
- 13:46Speaker 2: as they possibly can, while at the same time, Bryce
- 13:48Speaker 2: Miller's done nothing to say he shouldn't be starting.
- 13:51Speaker 1: And here you are.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Anyway, That's where the Mariners stand at least one more
- 13:56Speaker 2: time through for doing this through Sunday, then what probably
- 14:00Speaker 2: the same, I would think if the results stay the
- 14:02Speaker 2: same and they do it again, and they do it again,
- 14:04Speaker 2: and they keep doing it inter mintally until it doesn't work.
- 14:08Speaker 2: I'm not sure that's a remedy for success throughout the
- 14:11Speaker 2: entire season. And now you're toying with what has been
- 14:13Speaker 2: a rock in your clubhouse, a status guy in your
- 14:16Speaker 2: clubhouse for the last several years, and Luis Castillo. That's
- 14:20Speaker 2: where the mess comes in. It's not just hey, pitch,
- 14:23Speaker 2: when we tell you to do your job and we'll
- 14:25Speaker 2: figure it out. Major League Baseball players, that's not how
- 14:28Speaker 2: it works. Four Nite, four five one and the Tacoma
- 14:31Speaker 2: Dodge Tech Line. What would you do if you were
- 14:35Speaker 2: in charge of the Mariners beside fire the front office
- 14:37Speaker 2: and get rid of analytics and iPads and bring in
- 14:39Speaker 2: a bunch of new hitters and new hitting coach and
- 14:41Speaker 2: new manager.
- 14:41Speaker 3: You're gonna have these guys thinking deep, guys and girls,
- 14:44Speaker 3: I mean about this when all that what Cam Mariners do.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I mean about this issue? I yeah, I think.
- 14:53Speaker 3: Now that it's been for the YouTube folks, air quoted, communicated,
- 14:58Speaker 3: keep it going.
- 15:00Speaker 1: As as well as the results stay the same. Huh
- 15:02Speaker 1: why not? Yeah? They're just have to be said for that.
- 15:05Speaker 1: No socks I'm like, no, do what we tell you.
- 15:08Speaker 1: We're paying you twenty four million. Do what we say. Gosh,
- 15:11Speaker 1: that sounds so mean. Well that's cold, but can you
- 15:13Speaker 1: say it in a nicer way.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, I'm sure Depoto would have said, we
- 15:17Speaker 2: really love what you're doing for us.
- 15:19Speaker 1: Thank you. The PC answer behind the scenes.
- 15:22Speaker 2: You're doing what we expect you to do. Yes, we
- 15:25Speaker 2: need to develop Bryce Miller in his career as well.
- 15:28Speaker 3: The Mariners are hiring Greg What says you, I'd say,
- 15:32Speaker 3: start Castillo, okay, And.
- 15:38Speaker 1: Having said that, then what brace Miller? No, because you're
- 15:40Speaker 1: gonna have Brace Miller longer. You're gonna have police Castillo.
- 15:43Speaker 2: So right, and it then what And Miller's like, what
- 15:47Speaker 2: else you want me to do?
- 15:48Speaker 1: All right? I got her many years left. Thises Castillo have.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Two plus investing option twenty twenty eight, so he's got
- 15:55Speaker 2: the rest of this season at twenty four point one
- 15:56Speaker 2: five million, Next season twenty four point one five million.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Eat it.
- 16:01Speaker 3: You're gonna have to that's forty eight million better the boys.
- 16:06Speaker 3: You better pray they won the World Series half their payroll. Man,
- 16:10Speaker 3: It's crazy how that all works out. You're like three
- 16:12Speaker 3: years ago it's a great deal. Now you're like, damn
- 16:15Speaker 3: or two years into it, right, and we still owe
- 16:17Speaker 3: him forty eight million?
- 16:19Speaker 1: Right? Yeah? And then he comes fast, isn't it? It do?
- 16:22Speaker 2: And in Major League Baseball it ain't like the NFL
- 16:24Speaker 2: where you can massage it and it's not guarantee it out.
- 16:28Speaker 1: And we'll stretch it out and we'll give him signing bones,
- 16:30Speaker 1: we'll renegotiate.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Nah, this is guaranteed cash forty eight million, whether he
- 16:33Speaker 2: pitches another inning for you or not. So until you
- 16:36Speaker 2: can unload that with somebody else, good luck.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:40Speaker 2: I talked to Chuck briefly about it this morning. He said, no,
- 16:42Speaker 2: there's no way they can get rid of the salary.
- 16:43Speaker 2: They can possibly get rid of some of it and
- 16:45Speaker 2: have to absorb some of it to your.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Point, Chrissy, he did, Yeah, you're gonna have to if
- 16:49Speaker 1: you want to trade him. I think so.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But otherwise, keep pitching him like this and then Yin
- 16:55Speaker 2: and Yang and these dudes. If the results stay the same,
- 17:00Speaker 2: We're gonna talk to Bob Night and Gel eleven o'clock.
- 17:01Speaker 2: He's been covering baseball for forty plus years.
- 17:05Speaker 1: I want to know.
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, does he think this is sustainable. He knows
- 17:08Speaker 2: Luis Castill, he's been covering the National League for a
- 17:11Speaker 2: long time. Is this sustainable?
- 17:14Speaker 1: Hm?
- 17:17Speaker 3: I would say yeah, sustainable based on how it's going.
- 17:22Speaker 3: But I know it takes a toll mentally because your
- 17:26Speaker 3: your mindset is, oh, I'm pitching at least seven eight innings,
- 17:30Speaker 3: and now they're like, oh, no, you're a fourth inning.
- 17:32Speaker 1: But you're great.
- 17:33Speaker 3: But we have this situation, we have this thing that
- 17:36Speaker 3: we're doing to increase your workload for the further the
- 17:41Speaker 3: betterman of the season, per se.
- 17:43Speaker 1: So we're gonna stop you now.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And the Mariner's mistake obviously in the communication piece you
- 17:46Speaker 2: talked about Chris Castile would not have gone off in
- 17:49Speaker 2: the dugout had he known the deal, right, of course.
- 17:52Speaker 4: Not.
- 17:52Speaker 2: No, he's throwing four shutout innings the first time in
- 17:55Speaker 2: two months he's done that, and then you tell him
- 17:57Speaker 2: that you're out of it. No, No, if he would
- 17:59Speaker 2: if he had known at the start of the game,
- 18:02Speaker 2: he probably would not be happens that he'd probably still
- 18:04Speaker 2: be upset about being taken out of it. But yeah,
- 18:07Speaker 2: not making it a whole scene, and that's what he
- 18:10Speaker 2: did because they managed.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Daari Wilson comes up to him, say, okay, now you're out.
- 18:14Speaker 1: Excuse me here, what are you watching the game?
- 18:17Speaker 2: You left me in for months when I was getting
- 18:19Speaker 2: wrecked for seven runs in four innings. Now you're gonna
- 18:22Speaker 2: take me out when I gave up no runs in
- 18:24Speaker 2: fourty What? And that was the reaction? You saw the dugout.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So the communication piece that's on the MS and when
- 18:30Speaker 2: they did this, I can bet your bottom dollar this
- 18:34Speaker 2: was not Dan Wilson's idea. No way, Dan Wilson has
- 18:38Speaker 2: to carry out jar Dpota's wish on this. Dapota said,
- 18:41Speaker 2: I got six healthy starters. I want to keep them
- 18:43Speaker 2: all starters, potentially trade one. See what the results are.
- 18:47Speaker 2: But Dan Wilson, you figured out you manage the inside
- 18:51Speaker 2: dynamics of the clubhouse and the dugout. But here's what
- 18:53Speaker 2: we're doing. And Dan Wilson has zero experienced No man
- 18:58Speaker 2: manager in major league history has experienced this. But Dan
- 19:00Speaker 2: Wilson has zero experience managing a major league team before
- 19:03Speaker 2: last year, and you're asking him to do this. That's
- 19:07Speaker 2: on de Poto and Hollander for putting us upon the manage.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Everyone says, oh, this is Dan Wilson. This dame was Dan.
- 19:12Speaker 2: This was not Dan Wilson. Dan Wilson did not go
- 19:14Speaker 2: into Jerry to Pote's office and say we're doing this.
- 19:17Speaker 2: We're gonna piggyback no one's ever done in Major league history,
- 19:19Speaker 2: but we're gonna do it with my pitching step. No, no, no, no,
- 19:23Speaker 2: that's not how this worked. And then you saw the
- 19:26Speaker 2: result of it and manager Dan Wilson had to deal
- 19:29Speaker 2: with Castillo and his outburst. I'm not sure what the
- 19:33Speaker 2: answer is, to be honest with you, but four nine,
- 19:35Speaker 2: four or five one. We'll talk about it at eleven.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Thirty year feedback of the text line, the Takoma Dodge
- 19:39Speaker 2: text line on what you would do with this piggyback situation,
- 19:41Speaker 2: we'll talk to Bob night Andingale eleven to talk about it.
- 19:44Speaker 1: Forty year baseball writer is he if he's ever seen it?
- 19:47Speaker 2: Up? Next, you're here from coach Mike McDonald how he's
- 19:49Speaker 2: messaging the defense of the Seahawks Super Bowl championship to
- 19:53Speaker 2: his players. It's a new twist on Mike McDonald's coaching approach.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's next on ninety three point three KJRFM.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Greg Belt Show with Christopher Kidd.
- 20:11Speaker 2: Hopefully it's this beautiful, sunny, bright, cheery of a morning
- 20:14Speaker 2: as it is here in the Pacific Northwest for wherever
- 20:16Speaker 2: you might be listening in the iHeartRadio app or on
- 20:20Speaker 2: our website nine through three KJR dot com, or just
- 20:22Speaker 2: a good old fashion FM radio beautiful spring day here
- 20:25Speaker 2: in the Pacific Northwest. Why Christopher Kidd is born and
- 20:29Speaker 2: raised and loves it here and we'll never leave. These
- 20:31Speaker 2: are perfect days.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Actually, it's crazy to grow up here in travel places
- 20:36Speaker 3: but still be here and an opportunity like this on
- 20:39Speaker 3: sports Breid Let's that's pretty cool.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I don't take it for granted, so I'm lucky. That's
- 20:45Speaker 1: great way to look at it. Thank you. Yesterday it
- 20:48Speaker 1: was not sunny and beautiful and bright. It was raining.
- 20:51Speaker 2: And Mike McDonald has a beautiful, glittering indoor practice facility
- 20:54Speaker 2: where the Seahawks just hung their second Super Bowl championship
- 20:57Speaker 2: banner with all the names of the players on the roster.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Forty nine of the fifty three of whom, by the way,
- 21:02Speaker 2: are back on the roster for this year, which is
- 21:04Speaker 2: unbelievable in modern NFL. That's just we could do a
- 21:07Speaker 2: whole show just on that and how they pulled that off,
- 21:11Speaker 2: including almost the entire starting defense, pretty much the entire
- 21:14Speaker 2: starting defense back from leading the league last year and
- 21:17Speaker 2: points allowed. So yeah, they were out in the rain,
- 21:19Speaker 2: because that's how Mike McDonald rolls. They might as well
- 21:22Speaker 2: just close up that into practice facility. They'll use it
- 21:25Speaker 2: goot for interviews and the coach, since they won the
- 21:30Speaker 2: Super Bowl in February, has spent a lot of time
- 21:33Speaker 2: on planting, planning, how he's going to message to his
- 21:36Speaker 2: players this coming season, keeping it fresh, keeping it new
- 21:41Speaker 2: in this year of defending the title, and let's see
- 21:43Speaker 2: where complacency is all around the facility. How are they
- 21:46Speaker 2: going to battle complacency? How are they going to keep
- 21:49Speaker 2: this young, hungry team from just getting fat and happy
- 21:51Speaker 2: on winning the Super Bowl. Well, they aren't talking about
- 21:54Speaker 2: running it back. Here's what Mike McDonald had to say
- 21:57Speaker 2: about that, in particular, a bunch of other things.
- 22:00Speaker 1: They've been great.
- 22:01Speaker 4: We're using the term we want to run it forward,
- 22:03Speaker 4: it meaning our process and who we are. I think
- 22:05Speaker 4: this is going to be a conversation that, you know,
- 22:07Speaker 4: something that we're going to talk about consistently. I don't
- 22:09Speaker 4: think it's a one and done type of conversation. Really,
- 22:12Speaker 4: it's just how we talk about how we operate all
- 22:14Speaker 4: the time. We're having conversations with our team and our
- 22:16Speaker 4: units every day about who we want to be and
- 22:18Speaker 4: how we want to do things, and this situation is
- 22:20Speaker 4: no different. So it's really nothing more than or less
- 22:23Speaker 4: than that.
- 22:25Speaker 2: He had a lot more to say about his messaging,
- 22:28Speaker 2: in particular of why he chose the phrase run it forward.
- 22:33Speaker 1: This is what he said.
- 22:34Speaker 4: If you like it, I'll take credit for it.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It's not somebody else.
- 22:37Speaker 4: I think the common thread that you find is a
- 22:41Speaker 4: standard that you feel responsible to uphold on a daily basis.
- 22:45Speaker 4: And part of that standard here is, you know, is
- 22:47Speaker 4: chasing edges. Is a spirit of evolution and a spirit
- 22:50Speaker 4: of moving forward all the time. So that's where our
- 22:53Speaker 4: minds are, you know, but giving us the freedom to
- 22:56Speaker 4: move forward and have the space to kind of make
- 23:00Speaker 4: each each kind of new phase of the year our
- 23:02Speaker 4: own and unique to us. So there's a balance there.
- 23:05Speaker 4: But again, I've just been really pleased with every day's
- 23:08Speaker 4: work and having sensed an ounce of complacency and that's
- 23:11Speaker 4: been really positive. We don't avoid it. It's not really
- 23:14Speaker 4: the top of mind. There's necessary times to talk about it,
- 23:17Speaker 4: like the ring ceremony. We know we'll party in that
- 23:19Speaker 4: night and having a great time and celebrating that team
- 23:22Speaker 4: and those people, but it's not really on our focus
- 23:25Speaker 4: right now.
- 23:25Speaker 1: You know.
- 23:26Speaker 4: The way I phrase it the team is, you know,
- 23:27Speaker 4: it's something that like could be a once in a
- 23:29Speaker 4: lifetime opportunity. Hopefully it's more than a once in a lifetime.
- 23:32Speaker 1: For our team.
- 23:32Speaker 4: But that's like a thing that happened that we can
- 23:35Speaker 4: cherish and we should be proud of because the amount
- 23:37Speaker 4: of work that it took and all the things that
- 23:39Speaker 4: go into winning a Super Bowl, we should we should
- 23:41Speaker 4: be really proud of that, you know. But I think
- 23:43Speaker 4: the thing that we find the joy in is what
- 23:47Speaker 4: we've created in like the way of life about what
- 23:49Speaker 4: we're trying to do here on a daily basis. And
- 23:51Speaker 4: if you think about last year's chain, I think you
- 23:52Speaker 4: guys would agree, like the cool part about last year's
- 23:55Speaker 4: team was the team and the process and the shadow
- 23:58Speaker 4: boxing and the you know, all the stuff that goes
- 24:00Speaker 4: with trying to become a great team every day and
- 24:02Speaker 4: so kind of put in two different boxes where they
- 24:05Speaker 4: don't have to be like enemies of one another.
- 24:07Speaker 2: You know, the Super Bowl gave you a lot of
- 24:10Speaker 2: different opportunities this off season.
- 24:11Speaker 1: They interact a lot of different people. Was there any.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Conversation or interaction that was either memorable for you or
- 24:17Speaker 3: just impactful.
- 24:17Speaker 1: That you had this off season?
- 24:19Speaker 4: Well, more people want to talk to me, which is unexpected.
- 24:22Speaker 4: I've been blessed to meet some really cool people, and
- 24:25Speaker 4: I'll leave those conversations in private. But again, I feel
- 24:28Speaker 4: like I'm telling everything I told the team. But there's
- 24:30Speaker 4: things that doors are open because of what we did
- 24:32Speaker 4: and like that, and again that's really cool. But when
- 24:35Speaker 4: you're doing those things, you're like, Okay, this is great.
- 24:40Speaker 4: But what I really love doing is coming to work
- 24:41Speaker 4: every day and doing football with our team. You know,
- 24:44Speaker 4: That's that's what I really cherish. And so that's been
- 24:47Speaker 4: a main message of like what we're actually you know,
- 24:49Speaker 4: chasing and we're not looking for.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Like bells and whistles.
- 24:51Speaker 4: We're looking to be a great football team.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Well that sounds like marked to a tea and we're
- 24:57Speaker 2: not looking for bells and whistles. Question he was asked
- 25:00Speaker 2: that had him saying we don't avoid it is do
- 25:03Speaker 2: you mention, do you bring up the fact we're Super
- 25:05Speaker 2: Bowl champions or do you like is that taboo? You
- 25:08Speaker 2: just don't say it, And that's when he said, well,
- 25:10Speaker 2: we're gonna have a ring ceremony. But this is the
- 25:14Speaker 2: challenge for a young coach and his third season ever
- 25:17Speaker 2: in the job at any level. They're still thirty eight
- 25:20Speaker 2: years just thirty eight years old. He's never been in
- 25:22Speaker 2: this experience before, a Super Bowl champion in charge of
- 25:26Speaker 2: the ship for the following season in how to set
- 25:29Speaker 2: that course. And he's got veteran players who, as I mentioned,
- 25:34Speaker 2: ten of the eleven starters on defense are coming back.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Really ten of the eleven starters on offense if you
- 25:40Speaker 2: counted really the only front line starter not returning was
- 25:44Speaker 2: Kenneth Walker signing with the Chiefs. So that's twenty of
- 25:47Speaker 2: twenty two starters on offense and defense that just won
- 25:50Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. So you don't have to really talk
- 25:52Speaker 2: too much about that, hey we won the Super Bowl
- 25:55Speaker 2: or this taboo or not. They're still I mean, they
- 25:57Speaker 2: haven't gotten their rings yet. So yeah, it's but the
- 26:02Speaker 2: run it forward is about process and Mike McDonald's nothing
- 26:05Speaker 2: if he's not about process, and he talks about it,
- 26:08Speaker 2: he lives it, he breathes it, and he thinks it,
- 26:10Speaker 2: and he drills it into his players. When the process,
- 26:14Speaker 2: the games will take care of itself. That is, basically,
- 26:17Speaker 2: in a nutshell, Mike McDonald's leadership philosophy, and in fact,
- 26:21Speaker 2: that's straight out of the Army training manual. I mean
- 26:23Speaker 2: I've learned that second day after he got my head
- 26:26Speaker 2: shaved at West Point basic training. The process beats the
- 26:30Speaker 2: process makes the results, and if you're focused intently on
- 26:35Speaker 2: perfecting the process, the results will take care of themselves.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And that basically is what McDonald has tried to do
- 26:40Speaker 2: here his first two years as the Seahawks head coach,
- 26:44Speaker 2: to change the process to fit exactly what he wants
- 26:46Speaker 2: to do, and it worked, worked better than anyone could
- 26:50Speaker 2: have imagined them winning a Super Bowl in just two
- 26:52Speaker 2: seasons after uprooting the entire culture, and he did it
- 26:56Speaker 2: because of the brotherhood and the kid togetherness. So now,
- 26:59Speaker 2: what is helping Chris in this whole process of not
- 27:02Speaker 2: of getting rid of the complacency I think.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Is you still have what is basically a young corps.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, you got DeMarcus Lawrence at thirty four
- 27:10Speaker 2: and Leonard Williams is going on to thirty three and
- 27:12Speaker 2: Jared Reid at thirty three. But those are the anomalies
- 27:16Speaker 2: of this team. The basic bedrock stars are Jackson Smith
- 27:20Speaker 2: and Jigman his early twenties, Devin Witherspoon in his early twenties,
- 27:23Speaker 2: also about to get resigned. Sam Darnold's not even out
- 27:27Speaker 2: of twenty eight yet, as your starting quarterback just won
- 27:30Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. Your starting offensive line is returning intact,
- 27:33Speaker 2: all under thirty in fact, all under twenty eight years old.
- 27:36Speaker 2: You're starting offensive line. We haven't even talked about the
- 27:39Speaker 2: fact that all five starters are coming back on the
- 27:41Speaker 2: team that won the Super Bowl and a unit that
- 27:43Speaker 2: was an absolute mess for a decade in here. That
- 27:47Speaker 2: alone gives them ahead. Charles Cross talked about that yesterday,
- 27:50Speaker 2: how we are so far ahead on the offensive line
- 27:54Speaker 2: of just being together and on the same page because
- 27:56Speaker 2: we all played together last year and we're coming back
- 27:58Speaker 2: in tact.
- 27:59Speaker 1: But Chris, they are Ernest Jones.
- 28:02Speaker 2: Is twenty six, twenty seven, they are not even Their
- 28:06Speaker 2: main stars are so young that I'm not sure the complacency. Yeah,
- 28:09Speaker 2: went in the Super Bowl, fat and happy and all that,
- 28:13Speaker 2: but This is different than the Seahawks of twenty of
- 28:16Speaker 2: twenty fourteen coming off the Super Bowl, when you had
- 28:18Speaker 2: Sherman and Chancellor and all those guys starting to head
- 28:21Speaker 2: into their second contracts and near in their thirties and
- 28:24Speaker 2: getting paid giant contracts like Earl Thomas, And this is
- 28:28Speaker 2: a different situation than that. I think the age is
- 28:31Speaker 2: really in their favor here, Chris, Oh.
- 28:33Speaker 1: Yeah, they're young.
- 28:35Speaker 3: They are so open to Mike McDonald's messaging and how
- 28:39Speaker 3: he's delivered it because there's proof, right, you've seen it.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Best defense in the league. They all believe in one another.
- 28:47Speaker 3: And I think when you look at the overall messaging
- 28:50Speaker 3: from the question about the Super Bowl and Mike n
- 28:53Speaker 3: Dallas dating, yeah, we don't avoid it, but it's not.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Really at the top of their mind.
- 28:58Speaker 3: And I think when you combine that overall message, it's simple,
- 29:02Speaker 3: be happy, be proud of the championship, but do not
- 29:06Speaker 3: let the trophy become the new Seahawks identity. The identity
- 29:12Speaker 3: is in fact the standard that they do daily, whether
- 29:15Speaker 3: it's the worth ethic that produced that suer they won
- 29:18Speaker 3: last year. So when they all had that mindset, the
- 29:21Speaker 3: goal is obvious. Get back to the NFC Championship. Handle business,
- 29:28Speaker 3: and we have a chance to win another super Bowl
- 29:30Speaker 3: in another NFC West rival rivalry's home, which would be
- 29:33Speaker 3: the Rams. So that is their mindset, stacking wins again
- 29:38Speaker 3: this season, building that helmet.
- 29:42Speaker 1: What was it a pitch? What was it called? Thank you?
- 29:45Speaker 3: The total poll of helmets? Redoing that they're not looking
- 29:48Speaker 3: at last year like, oh this will be did last year?
- 29:50Speaker 2: No?
- 29:50Speaker 1: No, no, this season?
- 29:51Speaker 3: What will be going to do from week one until
- 29:53Speaker 3: the season ends, going to the postseason. So the messaging
- 29:57Speaker 3: has stayed the same, but he doesn't want the identity
- 29:59Speaker 3: to change. Doesn't want guys to get caught up in
- 30:02Speaker 3: the the words solid of repeat champions because yeah, obviously
- 30:07Speaker 3: the word is to repeat. But for them, it's that
- 30:10Speaker 3: worth work ethic that produced them to win that first
- 30:13Speaker 3: Super Bowl? Can they do it again? And it's going
- 30:15Speaker 3: to be met with more challenges. So I'm excited to
- 30:18Speaker 3: see what this team can do.
- 30:19Speaker 2: The process and the togetherness is what he's trying to
- 30:22Speaker 2: replicate from last season. Up next, who's on the field
- 30:25Speaker 2: for the Seahawks during these voluntary OTAs? Two more of
- 30:27Speaker 2: them this week we'll talk about who's practicing, Who's not
- 30:30Speaker 2: and why that's next?
- 30:31Speaker 1: On ninety three point three kJ RFM.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Three point three kJ RFM from Elliott Bay in Seattle,
- 30:38Speaker 2: Happy Wednesday, May twenty seventh, to you Curly Memorial earlier
- 30:43Speaker 2: Memorial Day then sometimes so it's not quite the end
- 30:46Speaker 2: of May yet another week or so, Christ before I
- 30:49Speaker 2: give back to the Seahawks. And who was on the
- 30:51Speaker 2: field yesterday for the starter OTAs? I wanted to ask
- 30:53Speaker 2: you real quick about the NBA and the Western Conference
- 30:56Speaker 2: Finals Thunder Game five, and I am sure you watched it.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Was it more flopping or was it? I mean, I
- 31:02Speaker 2: hear and read and see. I don't know if social
- 31:04Speaker 2: media is a good indicator, but a lot of people
- 31:07Speaker 2: are ticked off with the Thunder.
- 31:08Speaker 3: Of course, eighty percent of the Marsnic fans. How could
- 31:12Speaker 3: you be met?
- 31:14Speaker 1: Beat them? You don't like them?
- 31:15Speaker 3: Beat them. It's kind of like the Lakers. Anybody hated
- 31:18Speaker 3: the Lakers when it was shocking. Kobe, you hate them?
- 31:20Speaker 1: What do you gotta do? You gotta beat them? So
- 31:22Speaker 1: beat them? Do you think they play?
- 31:27Speaker 3: I think SGA is the person that's able to create
- 31:32Speaker 3: contact and deceive officials. But that's just one player, There's
- 31:37Speaker 3: still there's four other guys on the court. If you
- 31:40Speaker 3: want to stop them, beat them. I know that's very
- 31:41Speaker 3: cliche and obvious, but you can beat this team. The
- 31:46Speaker 3: Spurs have shown it. Victor Wimbyama was not aggressive that
- 31:49Speaker 3: he's aggressive as he should have been. You've seen what
- 31:53Speaker 3: an aggressive women Yama can do. It creates nightmares. Now
- 31:56Speaker 3: they missed some open shots, they'll be in front of
- 31:59Speaker 3: their home crowd. They probably won't miss hiss me.
- 32:02Speaker 1: We're talking about it.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Yes, so they have the formula to do it. Can
- 32:06Speaker 3: you do it consistently? SG has been very consistent. He
- 32:09Speaker 3: hasn't waivered from his ability to draw fouls. So why
- 32:13Speaker 3: is this now a talking point? I don't know. They
- 32:16Speaker 3: don't like him, and I get it. He's really good
- 32:18Speaker 3: at getting to the foul line. I think he had
- 32:20Speaker 3: thirteen free throw attempts and he he went twelve to
- 32:22Speaker 3: thirteen last night. So he's effective. So you follow him.
- 32:25Speaker 3: He's going to make his file shots. Victor is also
- 32:29Speaker 3: able to get to the rim and get create fouls himself.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Now does he flop?
- 32:33Speaker 3: I'm sure you can find some replays of him snapping
- 32:36Speaker 3: his head back. Because all players do it. SGA just
- 32:38Speaker 3: benefits the most from it. He's really really good at it.
- 32:41Speaker 3: Remember when James Harden had his reign of just good god,
- 32:45Speaker 3: this guy's just flopping all the SGA has taken that
- 32:47Speaker 3: to another level because he can also hit a jump shot,
- 32:50Speaker 3: he gets the basket. He's doing it at all three levels.
- 32:53Speaker 3: James Harden was just a three point specialist, and now
- 32:56Speaker 3: he's finally finding that mid rage game. SGA has all
- 32:59Speaker 3: of it, and that's just a nightmare. And he's able
- 33:02Speaker 3: to create contact. Guys are bumping into him on an
- 33:05Speaker 3: out of bounds play, Like, as a defender, you can't
- 33:09Speaker 3: be found to dude forty feet away from the basket.
- 33:11Speaker 3: I know you want to put pressure on him, but
- 33:13Speaker 3: you gotta know who you're going up against. A guy
- 33:15Speaker 3: that's mastered the ability to get bumped and fall. What
- 33:19Speaker 3: do you thing's gonna happen. They're just gonna not blow
- 33:21Speaker 3: their whistle. When there's contact, there's gonna usually be a foul. Contact,
- 33:26Speaker 3: though there was a couple of plays in the Eastern
- 33:29Speaker 3: Conference where I'm like, so, how was that not a foul?
- 33:33Speaker 3: Oji and an Obi got destroyed on a dunk and
- 33:37Speaker 3: there was no foul, Like, I was shocked that they
- 33:39Speaker 3: didn't blow the whistle. So the consistency of the whistle, sure,
- 33:43Speaker 3: that can be a discussion, But we're talking about one
- 33:46Speaker 3: player here that is basically just dominated that aspect of
- 33:50Speaker 3: the game. You cannot foul him forty feet away from
- 33:52Speaker 3: the basket, like that has to be your key point.
- 33:54Speaker 2: Tomorrow, we're gonna talk to Keith McPherson. He's a former
- 33:57Speaker 2: wfan host in New York City is now hosts of
- 34:00Speaker 2: Mike Jacks Sports Talk on streaming online. He's gonna have
- 34:04Speaker 2: an opinion whether the Knicks can beat whoever, probably the
- 34:07Speaker 2: thunder come out of the West. We'll talk to him
- 34:09Speaker 2: tomorrow at eleven eleven o'clock. Today, Bob Nightingale, longtime senior
- 34:14Speaker 2: columnist from Major League Baseball at USA Today, will join
- 34:16Speaker 2: us at eleven. The Seahawks yesterday their first OTA practice
- 34:21Speaker 2: of three this week, three next week, then the only
- 34:24Speaker 2: mandatory event of the entire offseason, the Mini camp Mandatory
- 34:28Speaker 2: Mini Camp June eight, nine, and ten, and that's it.
- 34:30Speaker 1: They're off till the end of July.
- 34:33Speaker 2: On the field yesterday at Seahawks voluntary OTAs and rents
- 34:36Speaker 2: and Sam, Darnold Jackson, Spith the Jigma newly Vnted Smith,
- 34:39Speaker 2: the wide receiver and offensive player that year in the
- 34:41Speaker 2: NFL Cooper Cup. The entire starting offensive line returning intact,
- 34:46Speaker 2: which I mentioned last segment. Rookie first round picked Jadarian
- 34:48Speaker 2: Price was there. Leonard Williams, new Dad was there. Jonas
- 34:53Speaker 2: Jones was there. So was Julian Love. So was Byron Murphy.
- 34:56Speaker 2: Speaking of new Dad, he said his daughter is growing
- 34:59Speaker 2: by leaps and b We talked about that story, and
- 35:03Speaker 2: I wrote about the News Tribune about the premature daughter
- 35:06Speaker 2: that he and his now wife had. They got married
- 35:08Speaker 2: this offseason. Born at two pounds during the season last year.
- 35:12Speaker 2: I mean, just blew my mind. I talked to him
- 35:14Speaker 2: throughout the season and he was a nervous wreck. He
- 35:17Speaker 2: was spending every moment Byron Murphy was away from when
- 35:19Speaker 2: he wasn't practicing her in film, he was at the
- 35:22Speaker 2: hospital in the nick you for his little girl.
- 35:24Speaker 1: Well now she's thriving.
- 35:25Speaker 2: He says, she's fat and happy and great and healthy.
- 35:29Speaker 2: And that's great news from Byron Murphy.
- 35:31Speaker 1: Yesterday. A. J.
- 35:33Speaker 2: Barner was there yesterday. The tight end did not practice.
- 35:35Speaker 2: He had surgeries on his shoulder and ankled this off season.
- 35:38Speaker 2: McDonald said, quote, he's itching to get out there, but
- 35:41Speaker 2: we'll probably see him come training camp time.
- 35:43Speaker 1: That's the end of July.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Zach Sharbonay on his recovery from his torn ACL in January.
- 35:49Speaker 2: Kenny McIntosh on his return from season ending knee injury
- 35:52Speaker 2: last July.
- 35:52Speaker 1: McDonald said, quote, we'll probably have a better idea as
- 35:55Speaker 1: we circled back in July.
- 35:57Speaker 2: There's a likelihood, I think likelihood that mcmcintosh will beget
- 36:02Speaker 2: on the physically enable to perform list, and at least
- 36:06Speaker 2: that for Charbonegy because he didn't have the injury an
- 36:09Speaker 2: ACL tear until January, he may not come back until September.
- 36:12Speaker 1: October.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Tory Horton, new running back of Manuel Wilson, signed this
- 36:16Speaker 2: offseason from Green Bay not practicing.
- 36:18Speaker 1: This was what McDonald said about.
- 36:19Speaker 4: That Manuel's got a personal thing going on right now,
- 36:22Speaker 4: and Tory's made a lot of great strides. He's gonna
- 36:25Speaker 4: seems like we've got some feedback that can really accelerate
- 36:27Speaker 4: his recovery, which is great, and so he deserves some
- 36:30Speaker 4: good news. He's been working really, really hard, and you
- 36:32Speaker 4: know it's one of those things like you don't have
- 36:34Speaker 4: a timetable until you do, and that just shows you
- 36:36Speaker 4: got to just keep, you know, grinding away at it.
- 36:38Speaker 4: And so good news back on Tory's front, which is
- 36:40Speaker 4: really exciting.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And again we'll have.
- 36:42Speaker 4: A better feel for Tory as we enter training camp.
- 36:46Speaker 2: He is McDonald's circumspect about injuries, but man, is he
- 36:49Speaker 2: circumspected about Horton. We have good news, but we're not
- 36:51Speaker 2: going to tell you what it is. He should be
- 36:54Speaker 2: back by maybe training camp now. He did say at
- 36:57Speaker 2: the beginning McDonald did the beginning of off season that
- 37:00Speaker 2: and would be unlikely to be on the field during
- 37:01Speaker 2: any of these spring practice And let's face it, you
- 37:04Speaker 2: don't need a player on the field who's coming off
- 37:06Speaker 2: of a surgery and injury to be on the field
- 37:09Speaker 2: in May and June. That's not gonna determine anything toward
- 37:12Speaker 2: his season. But the coach is indicating there that he
- 37:15Speaker 2: got good news and it is due for Horton is
- 37:17Speaker 2: due for good news. He has the most mysterious serious
- 37:21Speaker 2: shin injury in the history of shins.
- 37:23Speaker 1: They still haven't specified what it is.
- 37:25Speaker 2: It's likely it had required surgery, he would not have
- 37:28Speaker 2: been out from the first days of November until now
- 37:30Speaker 2: through now. But it sounds like trending toward good for
- 37:37Speaker 2: Tory Horton to be at least during summer training camp.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I think he's a candidate for the pup list physically
- 37:42Speaker 2: able to perform list. If you start on it to
- 37:44Speaker 2: begin training camp, you can then start the regular season
- 37:48Speaker 2: on it, and that gives your roster flexibility for guys
- 37:50Speaker 2: you'm not sure we'll be ready for the start of
- 37:52Speaker 2: the season if you start on. If you don't start
- 37:55Speaker 2: on the pup list, you can come off at any time.
- 37:57Speaker 2: I should say, let me let me rephrase that. If
- 38:00Speaker 2: you start on the puplist training camp, you can't come
- 38:01Speaker 2: off at any time. So it's not a sentence that
- 38:04Speaker 2: you can't get on the field anytime in August, which
- 38:07Speaker 2: is why teams like to do it for players who
- 38:09Speaker 2: are on the CUSP, and oftentimes players are on the
- 38:11Speaker 2: pup list to begin training camp and then within days
- 38:13Speaker 2: of training camp beginning or on the field ready to go.
- 38:16Speaker 2: While you're on the pup list, you cannot be on
- 38:18Speaker 2: the field and participating in any way in any practices
- 38:21Speaker 2: during training camp. It would not surprise me if that's
- 38:24Speaker 2: where Horton starts. Perhaps Kenny McIntosh, who had his season
- 38:28Speaker 2: enning knee injury last July, it would be at the
- 38:30Speaker 2: twelve month mark at the start of training camp. The
- 38:33Speaker 2: Marcus Lawrence we mentioned away from the team. McDonald said,
- 38:36Speaker 2: he's doing his own thing and on track, and we're
- 38:39Speaker 2: likely to see him here at some point soon. So
- 38:44Speaker 2: the veteran thirty four years old is on his own
- 38:46Speaker 2: plan and McDonald's okay with that, he has said. McDonald
- 38:48Speaker 2: said McLawrence has told him he's coming back and coming
- 38:53Speaker 2: off of a Pro Bowl season, winning his first Super
- 38:55Speaker 2: Bowl at age thirty four. That the coach said, Lawrence
- 38:57Speaker 2: has told him he's coming back, So, according to McDonald,
- 39:00Speaker 2: no change there.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Up next, back to baseball, Back to the Mariners.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Bob Nightingale, senior columnist from Major League Baseball writing for
- 39:08Speaker 2: USA Today, has seen a lot of baseball games in
- 39:11Speaker 2: his forty plus years of cover and ball.
- 39:13Speaker 1: I'm going to ask you he's ever seen.
- 39:14Speaker 2: What the Mariners are trying to do with this piggybacking
- 39:16Speaker 2: Luis Castillo and Brycemeller. Up next on ninety three point
- 39:19Speaker 2: three KJRFM
