- 0:01Hello and happy Thursday.
- 0:02Okay, hold on.
- 0:03I can't hear my own self.
- 0:04Let's do something about this.
- 0:07Okay.
- 0:08Is this on?
- 0:09It's on.
- 0:17All right, we're gonna start again.
- 0:20Hello, happy Thursday.
- 0:22She considers a field family.
- 0:23Okay, so I'm coming in a little hot today.
- 0:26Like I have, like we've just been through it with the Lord and I am very clear.
- 0:33Here's the deal.
- 0:34Here's the deal.
- 0:37When we choose to step into a space in a more public way, in a bigger way, saying,
- 0:47you know what, I have a thing that I feel like you called me to say, and I'm willing
- 0:50to step out and say it, he will not leave us there.
- 0:53He will train us and shepherd us so that we can be well seasoned.
- 1:01Okay?
- 1:02It is a beautiful walk.
- 1:05It is a very humbling walk.
- 1:07So I just got all kinds of humbled up one way and down the other over the weekend
- 1:11this past weekend.
- 1:12I'm recording this on a Monday.
- 1:14And so I just am like, Lord, help me to, I'm just going to pray.
- 1:17We're going to do that first.
- 1:18Lord, help me to communicate the gifts that you've given me over the past
- 1:22weekend, the things that you have shown me so clearly, reminded me of so deeply.
- 1:27And I pray that it would minister to all of these folks, all these men and women,
- 1:32probably mostly women who are listening here, that they would feel.
- 1:37just fortified for the journey, Lord.
- 1:39Fortified for this work to which you have called us.
- 1:42In your holy name, amen.
- 1:44Okay.
- 1:45So.
- 1:47Sorry, Leslie.
- 1:50Like there is an audio book that is very loud in the background.
- 1:53I don't know if it's coming through on this.
- 1:56They have to turn off the audio.
- 2:01Move it, please.
- 2:03It's super loud.
- 2:05So obviously we're cutting all of this stuff.
- 2:11Like, can you hear this?
- 2:12I can hear it through my headphones.
- 2:15Okay, sounds like they moved it.
- 2:19No, maybe not.
- 2:34Alright, hopefully we're good.
- 2:38Okay, so y 'all listen, when we step out, we will be stretched.
- 2:44Okay, so here is what I want to tell you.
- 2:48The very worst thing that you can do when endeavoring to be faithful in the work to
- 2:56which the Lord has called you is start to look at the results.
- 3:00Okay, it's the worst thing you can do.
- 3:02And I started doing it this past weekend and it took me down hard.
- 3:07By the end of the weekend, I was like, can I curl up in a ball and just hide under a
- 3:12blanket until like maybe until I have grandchildren?
- 3:15Like maybe I'll come out then, that sounds fun.
- 3:17You know, just a decade or two, that's all I need, just a decade or two.
- 3:20No one will miss me, no one needs me.
- 3:22I made it all up, my kids don't even care.
- 3:25Like it was bad, we were in some bad spaces.
- 3:28I was like, I was ready to call the whole thing off.
- 3:31And of course I knew at the time it was.
- 3:34It was a head game, right?
- 3:36I was in my head.
- 3:38But I looked back when the dust kind of settled today and I was like, it doesn't
- 3:42matter.
- 3:43Like I don't, I just need to do the work the Lord has called me to do.
- 3:47I was like, what made this weekend so hard?
- 3:50And I realized I was looking at the results and I'd actually just had a
- 3:54coaching call along these lines on a totally different subject matter.
- 3:59But good night.
- 4:00If you're a homeschool mom, if you're an entrepreneur,
- 4:03The worst thing we can do is look at the results because we are doing work that
- 4:08requires decades, not days and weeks and months.
- 4:12Especially, it is especially, well, it's really dangerous to look at results in
- 4:16both directions.
- 4:17But if we start looking at results, here's what happens.
- 4:19If we start looking at results as far as our children are concerned, we tend to
- 4:24look at the moment.
- 4:26They won't sit still for school.
- 4:28They fight me on everything.
- 4:30The house is a mess.
- 4:31I'm so worn down.
- 4:33They're still not learning this.
- 4:34We still need therapy for that.
- 4:36And we start to feel this anxiety of it's never, we're never going to get there.
- 4:42And instead of seeing all the victories that have already come to pass, like they
- 4:47wipe their own bottoms now.
- 4:48Hello.
- 4:49Can I get an amen?
- 4:50Is that not a huge win as a parent?
- 4:53Right?
- 4:54We're past the stage where I have to buckle everybody's seatbelt.
- 4:58we're past the stage where I'm getting woken up in the middle of the night.
- 5:00They've actually learned how to tidy up after themselves.
- 5:04It's not perfect, but they do it.
- 5:06Instead of celebrating those things, we look at the things that aren't finished
- 5:09yet.
- 5:10And we tend to weaponize those against ourselves.
- 5:12Well, other kids are doing this by now, or so -and -so doesn't have this problem, or
- 5:18it's been eight years and it hasn't happened yet.
- 5:21You know what?
- 5:22For some developmental things, that's incredibly normal.
- 5:26Incredibly normal.
- 5:27that they're eight years old and they still haven't done X, Y, or Z, right?
- 5:31So that's the danger with homeschooling is it's a long slog.
- 5:36And really what we're trying to instill in them is the work of a lifetime in some
- 5:41ways.
- 5:42How to walk in your fullness before the Lord, how to be all that he has called you
- 5:46to be and do all that he's called you to do, how to be faithful, how to work well,
- 5:52how to have a good work ethic, how to love learning.
- 5:55These are lifetime skills.
- 5:57and then in our work.
- 5:59Well, this we can almost weaponize against ourselves more easily because when we look
- 6:04in the homeschool arena, we're all doing the same thing.
- 6:06We're all trying to raise these people up, right?
- 6:09But in the business world, sometimes we're running alongside of people who actually
- 6:14have kids in school all day.
- 6:16Our results are going to look very different during the season of our lives,
- 6:21which is part of why I created this podcast because every training I went to,
- 6:26Every guru I listened to, they were talking about discipline and encouraging
- 6:31people to really be faithful and be intentional about their work time.
- 6:36When they were talking to people who had a good six hours a day on their own, if not
- 6:39really, empty nesters didn't have people necessarily relying on them unless they
- 6:45were caring for an aging parent or something like that.
- 6:48So it was a very different dynamic.
- 6:52And even those who work outside the home and then do a business,
- 6:56They go home and the evenings can look fairly predictable, but this homeschool
- 7:00life, it's like a brave new world.
- 7:02When you try to sit down an entrepreneur and you've got kiddos coming in with
- 7:06different questions and different needs, and then there's a therapy, and then
- 7:09there's a sporting event, and we're trying to put that as priority, we're working a
- 7:15business in maybe a couple of hours a day, maybe even not that.
- 7:18And so how do we do that well?
- 7:21and how do we not get stuck in the trap of comparing ourselves with other people?
- 7:24And I'm just going to be really real, you guys.
- 7:26I often make notes and get really intentional about here's what I want to
- 7:29say.
- 7:30Today, I'm just landing in your ear, and I'm saying, don't do what I did,
- 7:37basically.
- 7:40So here was the conversation that I'd had last week in a coaching call with a
- 7:46client.
- 7:47We were talking about...
- 7:48this parable and we were taught or not this parable this moment in Christ's life
- 7:53with Peter and we were talking about how challenging it can be to be called out on
- 8:00the water and not look at the waves.
- 8:02So here's the moment.
- 8:03The disciples have gone on ahead of Christ.
- 8:06They're on the boat.
- 8:08The wind and the waves are crazy.
- 8:10Okay.
- 8:10So after he had dismissed the crowds and this is in Matthew, I'm pretty sure.
- 8:15Let me make sure.
- 8:16Matthew 14.
- 8:17Okay.
- 8:18So,
- 8:19After he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.
- 8:23When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was a long way from
- 8:28the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them.
- 8:31And in the fourth watch of the night, he came to them, walking on the sea.
- 8:35But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and said,
- 8:38it's a ghost.
- 8:39And they cried out in fear.
- 8:41But immediately, and I just love that, immediately, Jesus spoke to them, saying,
- 8:45take heart, it is I.
- 8:47Do not be afraid.
- 8:49And Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the
- 8:53water.
- 8:54He said, come.
- 8:55So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.
- 8:59But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord,
- 9:04save me.
- 9:05Jesus immediately, there it is again, immediately reached out his hand and took
- 9:09hold of him, saying to him, Oh, you of little faith, why did you doubt?
- 9:13And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.
- 9:16and those in the boat worshiped him saying, truly you are the son of God.
- 9:20Okay, here's the deal.
- 9:24We historically, at least when I was growing up in the church, we kind of liked
- 9:29to give Peter a hard time.
- 9:31And I always heard Jesus's voice as being like, oh, you have little faith, why did
- 9:36you doubt?
- 9:37But someone who literally is love embodied and who knew from the beginning of time,
- 9:44that he was going to have to come and live a sinless life and die because we were so
- 9:50broken.
- 9:50That was the only way we were going to get to him.
- 9:53He's not surprised by this moment, right?
- 9:55He is not like, what?
- 9:57You lost faith when things got hard?
- 9:59That's so weird.
- 10:00No one's ever done that before, right?
- 10:02He knows.
- 10:03He knows us.
- 10:04He knows us.
- 10:05And so I've heard it described more almost like an endearment, like how in...
- 10:13Hind's Feet on High Places, which is a beautiful parable story, if you haven't
- 10:16found your way to it, by Hannah Hernard.
- 10:20So the main character in that book is called Much Afraid.
- 10:24So it's almost like he's saying, oh, Much Afraid, why do you doubt?
- 10:27Why'd you doubt?
- 10:29Why did he doubt?
- 10:31Because he looked at the wind.
- 10:33It was a crazy night.
- 10:35It was really wavy.
- 10:36It was really windy.
- 10:38And so I don't know, wavy's not really a word.
- 10:39But anyway, it was bad out there.
- 10:41And...
- 10:42Yet, Peter chose to come.
- 10:45And while he was looking at Christ, he was able to come to Jesus.
- 10:52It was when he looked at the waves that he started to sink, because he saw his
- 10:57circumstances and he's like, this does not look good.
- 11:00I am not okay right now.
- 11:02And friends, that's where I was this past weekend.
- 11:05When we look at the results, it can get really bad.
- 11:11It can get really bleak sometimes.
- 11:13Things can feel hard.
- 11:15Things can feel lonely.
- 11:17Things can feel disappointing.
- 11:20And in the natural, we start to see those things and the more we look at them, the
- 11:24larger they loom.
- 11:27Where we can reach a point where it's all we see.
- 11:30And this is why again and again in scripture, we're called to seek first the
- 11:35kingdom of God and his righteousness.
- 11:38And then what does it say?
- 11:39All these things.
- 11:40will be added to you.
- 11:42He is source.
- 11:44He is the one who gets to decide what it's going to look like.
- 11:49We all want some evidence, right?
- 11:51Just prove to me that I'm on the right track.
- 11:53Prove to me that I didn't make it all up.
- 11:56But if we're really going to grow something that lasts, it's going to be a
- 12:00kingdom thing.
- 12:01Think about Christ in his ministry, you guys.
- 12:04He came and literally, what did he say after performing a miracle?
- 12:09don't tell anybody, because he knew he wouldn't be able to even hardly go
- 12:13anywhere.
- 12:14And he knew too that most of the people that were coming to him during that time
- 12:21while he was on Earth were almost kind of looking for, they were looking for the
- 12:26miracle.
- 12:26They were not looking for the miracle maker.
- 12:29They were looking for the healing, the deliverance, the food, right?
- 12:34What is that line?
- 12:36Oh, the woman at the well.
- 12:39If you knew who you were speaking to, then you would ask and you would receive living
- 12:45water and the well would basically never run dry.
- 12:49And she's thinking that's pretty good because when did she have to come to draw
- 12:51water?
- 12:52She came in the heat of the day.
- 12:54Usually, drawing water for the household was a, it was a social time for the women,
- 12:59but she was an outcast with her five husbands and the sixth man that she was
- 13:03living with wasn't her husband.
- 13:04So she came in the heat of the day, which is why she encountered Christ, first of
- 13:09all.
- 13:09But she's like, yeah, give me the water.
- 13:11Give me the water.
- 13:12I want the water.
- 13:13Give me the solution to my problem.
- 13:15And so he said, don't tell anybody who I am.
- 13:19And at the end of his ministry, he had lived in one small area of the world.
- 13:24And he had impacted certainly hundreds, probably thousands of people.
- 13:30But there was such an uprising against him.
- 13:34that the religious leaders were able to crucify him without the crowd completely
- 13:38taking them out.
- 13:38Why?
- 13:39Because they got their party trick, right?
- 13:41The list of people who truly loved him, who truly knew him as Lord was very short.
- 13:48And yet, as the centuries and generations have progressed, look at the impact he has
- 13:56made.
- 13:57Now he's God, but we have God in us.
- 14:01And we are called to do likewise with him, which means that the things that we are
- 14:05called to do may look really small sometimes.
- 14:08It may be like, are we going anywhere?
- 14:11Like, what are we doing trying to pay down debt, trying to grow a business, trying to
- 14:17educate our children?
- 14:19When we look at our results, when we look at the waves, we can feel deep
- 14:23discouragement.
- 14:24And I think it's important, friends, for us to just remind each other of that.
- 14:28The waves are the wrong place to look.
- 14:32again and again and again, let us remind ourselves and let us remind one another.
- 14:38Our call is to look full on his wonderful face.
- 14:42Okay, it's a beautiful, that's a beautiful hymn that I went to a church for a season
- 14:48where we sang it at the end of every church service.
- 14:51Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full on his wonderful face and the things of earth
- 14:56will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory
- 15:01and grace.
- 15:02It is when we look to him that we are satisfied.
- 15:06It is when we look to him that we are at peace and at rest.
- 15:10And it is when we look to him that we can shoulder our burden once again and
- 15:15continue to walk forward to do the holy sanctifying work to which he has called
- 15:20us.
- 15:21Not perfectly, but well.
- 15:25I know I could say a lot more about this, but I'm going to leave it there.
- 15:28Just a really
- 15:29quick sound bite to encourage you today.
- 15:31I know the shorter it is, the more likely it is you're going to listen to this.
- 15:34So be of good cheer, friend.
- 15:36Rest easy.
- 15:38He has got you.
- 15:40Okay?
- 15:42And that is why I can say that you have got this.
- 15:46Until next time, take care.
